Big names are out, but even bigger ones are coming in.
New Hawkeye targets are heating up in the transfer portal for both football and basketball.
Who's the next Hawkeye?
You are Locked On Hawkeyes, your daily podcast on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day.
Hey, welcome in.
I'm Trent Condon and this is the Locked On Hawkeyes Podcast.
I've been covering the Hawkeyes for over 20 years on the radio in the state of Iowa, including
currently on the Iowa Sports Radio Network with stations in Iowa City, Cedar Rapids,
the Quad City, Sioux City, and our flagship 106.3 KXNO in Des Moines from noon to
2 to 2 with Ken Miller. Today's episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Right now new customers can get
$200, $250 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. Today the Iowa baseball team had a big
comeback win in their midweek matchup with Bradley
and set their sights on a big showdown this weekend as they traveled to Michigan.
Plus, John Bowencamp, the Hawkeye beat writer for the Associated Press stops in with his
latest thoughts on the Hawkeyes.
But we begin today with a look at the transfer portal for both football and basketball and
some new names that could decide the fate for this year's Hawkeyes team.
It is that time of year as we saw yesterday the portal opened up for spring football period and it is going to be hot and heavy.
We have a lot of names that are in there. I think we're getting a better sense also on the basketball side of things.
Ben McCollum, some of those targets that he continues to look at, potentially getting very close to a couple of commitments
and deciding what this roster is going to look like.
But let's start today with the football side of things.
And as we've talked about throughout the course
of this week, it's an incredibly important time for Iowa
to be able to go out there, find help at both potentially
offensive line and also taking a look at what they're
going to be doing at the defensive back position look at what they're going to be doing at the defensive back position specifically what they're going to be doing.
As it pertains to the spot at left tackle you have a couple of young guys that just don't have a whole lot of experience and because of that I know there's plenty of concerns out there about what this is going to be what it's going to look like and potentially how I was going to shape up. So we talked a little bit about yesterday, the portal candidate, the
Ferris State transfer. And when we were talking about him, you know, one thing I think Bryce George, I maybe jumped to a conclusion that he was
automatically a left tackle just because that was the biggest need. Now, a couple of the services have him listed as a tackle.
There are other people believe though,
that he is more destined to be an inside player,
to be a right guard.
And though they have some experience at the interior spots,
maybe this leads to some shuffling around.
Or if it's not a left tackle,
if Bryce George they find out is not gonna be able to do
of that, then they go the other way
and he becomes a right tackle.
Can Jennings Dunker, does he have the foot speed to be a left tackle? A lot of things to do. And what we also don't
know is just admittedly what's happening with those young guys, you know, what they're looking
at. Like Trevor Lauk is the guy that continues, I think, to get the most buzz, right? When
you look at him and you look at what we've seen in terms of conversations. You know, when
you hear from the offensive coaches, when they talk about the offensive line, he's been
a name that has come up a couple of different times. Jack Dotsler has also been out there
a plenty and he's got another year of experience in front of him. Maybe that's the deciding
factor. And if both these guys have been practicing well, then that changes the equation of what
they're looking for. The other part is just knowing that offensive line, it's difficult. That transition is going
to be difficult for whoever it is. But let's get into some new names that have emerged.
We talked a lot yesterday, every day as you know that. And if you're an everyday listener,
a big thank you to you. You can always go back though and take a listen. Yesterday's
podcast, we talked a whole lot more about Bryce George. Let's talk about the hero now and some new names to
keep an eye on. First, a guy out, Khalil Tate. So, Khalil
Tate, you look at his offer list. One of the better recruits
that I had in terms of an offer list here recently. He had some
big time offers, Penn State, Tennessee, a couple other ones
in there, ultimately chose to be a Hawkeye and he's gotten passed
up a couple of different times. We've seen two different
waves now of guys both in his class and some younger classes
now that have passed him over. Reason? Who knows? He was a
special teamer and this is also the time. You're redshirt
sophomore, you know that eligibility is starting to
dwindle probably more quickly than you want and you're
starting to look around and find a place that you're gonna
be able to play and that looked to be the case for Khalil Tate
is Rashard Godfrey.
I'd passed him up.
What we saw a season ago with another true freshman that was passed him.
So that's where we have Khalil Tate.
Yeah.
Offer list kind of stinks to lose a guy like that, but now you're looking to build
that depth back up at the defensive back position.
So got three names for you.
And that's surprising.
All three of these names all come from the Missouri Valley Football Conference as college football and college sports in general
continue to evolve and more and more at the FCS level in football it just turned
it into a feeder program. We mentioned Bryce George yesterday from Ferris State
they win a national championship a year ago seven guys yesterday entered the
portal from that national championship team.
There were a number of guys from the FCS level,
specifically the Missouri Valley guys that were
anticipated to be back. They're not gonna be back.
They are in the portal and they're looking really for that
payday. We know the gap between what can happen in the
Big Ten and a power conference structure and what's
happening at the Missouri Valley Football Conference is
night and day.
What's going to be offered just at a baseline even without any extras just the baseline money that's going to be able to pay for these football players.
So here's the three names for you. Two come from Illinois State. In fact both these guys played a year ago against the Hawkeyes as Iowa opened up the season with a big win against Illinois State.
Both starting cornerbacks from a year ago. Both these guys also with a
couple of years of eligibility. First one, Teon Parks. Had a
good grade last year from Pro Football Focus and 80.1 grade
from him. Six foot one defensive back. Teon Parks is one of
those names. The other is Mark Cannon Jr. He had a 69.6 grade
from Pro Football Focus last year. He's a bigger
quarterback. Six foot three and we'll kind of see on that front both these guys,
what Phil Parker thinks about them.
You have to be able to play a specific way.
And I think at this point in time, after what they've gone through the last couple of years
and just some of the struggles that they've had at the cornerback spot that is so unlike Iowa football, just
what Phil Parker is looking for, he's not looking for another developmental piece, right?
He's looking for a guy that's going to be able to come in, be able to compete right
away from day one. What other name to keep an eye on from out at South Dakota is Shahid
Barros. So Barros is a guy that played for South Dakota, put up some good numbers himself
a year ago. That's another one that more and more people I saw Tom Cakert over at on three
Hawkeye report. He mentioned to keep an eye on this one. So Shaheed Barrows out of South
Dakota. Those are three names for you at cornerback. That's where they're going to be shopping.
That's what they're going to be looking for. And an opportunity to bolster that depth there.
I would need to help because we saw it a season ago,
that defensive back position, the quarterback spot.
TJ Hall, it's just been inconsistent.
There's been some really good plays out of TJ Hall,
but hasn't been able to put it all together
seemingly play in and play out.
Same thing for Deshaun Lee.
One thing I will remind people though,
is there has been a long line of guys that have struggled
and maybe struggled mightily
early in their careers and turned themselves into really good players by the time they became
upperclassmen. I think one of the examples that always pops to my head is Bradley Fletcher.
Bradley Fletcher was about as bad of a cornerback as I can remember seeing
under Phil Parker in these 26 years. He didn't have fluidity in the hips, looked like he was
completely lost, just looked overwhelmed so many times early
in his career. Not only did he turn himself into an all big 10
defender late in his career, and I believe a first teamer his
final season, he played in the lead seven, eight years. He
played the NFL for seven, eight years, Bradley Fletcher. So it
can happen. Go back and talk about a myriad of different
guys. And Riley Moss is another one, struggled mightily early in his career. On and on and
on. It's not easy. Cornerback is not an easy spot. You're out there. Everybody can see
you. Everybody knows exactly what is happening. And Phil Parker, he knows how to teach it
well. We'll see that bounce back this year. And if they can add a little bit of depth,
certainly something that they're looking for. Remember last season, last summer in the spring portal, it's something that they were
searching for and they weren't able to find it. It's going to cost money. Where's Iowa financially?
Again, it's the great unknown that we just always are guessing about. So we got the football side
covered. Now let's go to the basketball side. Iowa down to the final two as they are in for a six foot five guard from
Utah Valley Tanner Toulson. Toulson, 23 years old, average
over 13 points per game. He is in there a couple other guards
but still searching for that big man. We'll talk about that as
we continue and take a look a little bit deeper at the
basketball front. Plus we'll be joined by John Bowencamp all as
we continue this is Locked On Hawkeyes.

Every day as you know we've been talking a lot of basketball as Ben McCollum looks to build out
this basketball roster. A couple of things we met your Tanner Toulson, a 23
year old prospect from Utah Valley. So began his career at
BYU before he even played though, he took a two year
Mormon mission. This is a guy with two years of eligibility,
23 years old. And as we've learned, really these last two
years in the NCAA tournament. Yes, you need talent. There's no doubt, but age
goes a long way. Veteran presence goes a long way. And you can think of a myriad of examples,
guys that just look so different as we were talking about defensive backs earlier on the
football side of things. Same thing happening on the basketball front. 23 years old, two years of
eligibility. Tulsa played really well in the conference championship. 23 years old, two years of eligibility. Tulsen played really
well in the conference championship game against Green Canyon, averaged 13 and a half points
per game, four rebounds per contest, one and a half assists, guys get to play off the ball.
Shooting percentages aren't elite, but he's down to two. It's Iowa and it's TCU for his
services and how he could fit in. Another guard that they continue to look at and potentially are down to the final couple
of teams is Wes Ennis. He is the D2 player from Lincoln from Jamie Shaw of On3 Media.
He does believe that South Florida leads for his services right now. I do wonder if this
kind of goes hand in hand with Toulson though, if they're going to be willing to take one
of the two. Toulson, guy that plays off the ball more. Enos, a guy that plays with the ball in his hands more. And he also wonder for him.
Now he's got two years of eligibility, Enos does, but if he's a guy that looks at it, knows obviously what's going to be happening this year with Sturtz.
And if Sturtz has handled the ball that much, how much ball handling is going to be happening, I want to keep an eye on. They had the visit last weekend from four star freshman incoming
freshman Nick Lewis. Sounds like that one is down to Vayner
built against Iowa for his services. Maybe a little bit
more money to spend but the way the Ben McCullum in the past
has been able to build a point guards. We'll see if that's a
selling point in that one. One final note on the basketball
front. I do want to mention and sometimes we we fall victim of
forgetting about things right happens to me all the time a lot but Cooper catch so earlier this
week I'm sure many of you saw the story that he has been granted his waiver and he will get a
medical red shirt from what happened a season ago and because because of that, okay, no big deal, right?
In the grand scheme of things.
All right, gets another year.
I think we anticipated that was gonna happen.
Good to just have it on the books.
But the part that I think that people maybe forget about
is who Iowa beat for Cooper Cotch.
This was one of the rare instances
where Iowa beat some pretty powerful programs
that didn't happen in basketball a whole lot.
Wisconsin, Wake Forest, Purdue, Illinois.
These are the teams that were after him. He had Michigan State interests.
He had offers from all those other programs.
Cooper Koch was a big-time prospect, and probably because of the bloodlines,
because a lot of people just anticipated he was going to be an Iowa Hawkeye because of his dad JR and his playing
time back under Dr. Tom. I think a lot of people just thought it was a foregone conclusion
and missed. What a good prospect that Cooper Koch was. He saw flashes last year hidden
in his limited playing time. Beautiful looking shot. And now with this new system with Ben
McCollum, I'm excited to see how he's going to blossom. Still need a big shot. And now with this new system with Ben McCollum I'm excited to see how he's gonna blossom. Still
need a big guy and that remains kind of the biggest part that
they need. We continue on the Lockdown Hawkeyes podcast and
we talk with John Bowencamp. John is the Associated Press
writer on the Hawkeye beat, Hawkeye basketball. We're gonna
talk some women's basketball as well. What's going on is the
women's basketball team they're going to talk some women's basketball as well. What's going on as the women's basketball team? They're struggling a little bit trying to find their next point guard. We'll do that. John
Bowencamp with the Associated Press.
And I guess the Brendan Sullivan news, no shock. You're right, John. This didn't floor you saw the writing on the wall opportunity to you know to maybe go someplace and
and see the field and what will be his final year of eligibility so I think
it's the right move on his part.
Yeah, I mean because let's be honest he was not going to be number one and he
probably wasn't going to be number 2 and when you're in that situation in the
near last year you want to go to more play.
Because you have you know you that's the only way if you want to get to the next level, that's
the only way you're going to, you're not going to do that sit in, you know, an Iowa city
is a third straight.
So, so no, it didn't surprise me.
I mean, it's the way the portal timing is now did, I mean, it did kind of catch everybody
by surprise because I mean, clearly they're still in spring practice, but he knew what his role was going to be with his team.
And then he was going to go look somewhere else.
So like I said, it didn't surprise me.
It's just the time of when it happened, I think kind of caught everybody.
Well, and with a quarterback like Mark Gronowski, one of his strengths is his physicality, the
ability to pick up that first down to lower his head. It takes away with Brendan Sullivan, what
his strength is. Brendan Sullivan, it's not a great reader of the defense. That's not
something that you're going to look at. It is his athleticism, his ability to run the
football. And he don't need that with Grunowski anymore. I guess it was surprising to me hearing
kind of the outcry, but Brendan Sullivan also, I think will be fondly remembered because of just how decrepit the last half decade he's been at the quarterback spot.
It was something different. It was something that was at least entertaining. He wasn't
a great quarterback, but he was kind of the change that they needed maybe to jumpstart
things here now in the Tim Lester era.
Right. And he did that at times last year. And again, it was the consistency that I think ended up costing him.
And I mean, clearly, he had his injury issues too.
But again, he did provide something that they hadn't had in a while.
And when they had such inability to score in the red zone,
now all of a sudden you brought him in,
that gave you an opportunity to do some different things. And so yeah, I do think that's where he'll kind of be remembered, you know,
within. But again, like you said, that's Mark Granowski right there. That's why you got him.
That's why he won national championships in South Dakota State. That's why you brought him in. So,
you know, when you see all of that, you know, that you're not going to get on the
field unless something cataclysmic happens in front of you.
Yeah. And it makes sense for that to happen without a doubt. What's the ceiling of this team, John,
I guess, or what the hell? I'll ask it this way. We'll save the ceiling for another day. What's
keeping Ference up at night? You know, before he, before he, uh, the, the eyes get heavy and he
nods off.
What, what do you think worries him about this team?
Oh, well, I was for starters, making sure Mark Grunowski healthy because you're going
to want 12 games out of him.
I mean, you are not, you know, I mean, clearly you wanted, I mean, I would really, honestly,
I would really hope that the 20, 26 quarterback is on this roster.
I think he is, don't you, don't you don't you think Hank could be the guy
to
know? Yeah, absolutely. But I do think but I do worry because I
you just can't keep going to that well right every year
financially, especially. So that's that's the biggest thing
special. But I do think one keep Mark Grunowski healthy. You want
to keep your key all of your key players
healthy because I don't know how much depth they have right now. And I mean, we'll know
more about them, you know, when we see them here in a couple of weeks in spring game,
we'll know kind of where all the pieces fit in and we'll then we'll get a better idea
of August. Because I mean, I do think there's still going to be some portal movement here
and there. You know, it's just a matter of making sure that you don't go into August with a lot of
questions.
And I think that may be the biggest thing is, do you have everything kind of set up to
where you go into August without a lot of questions?
Speaking of questions, every spring there's been questions for the last, what, seven,
eight years at the wide receiver position.
Fair to say, at least this is the deepest that they've been at this spot in a really long time.
Jacob Gill once again proved he's dependable.
He is solid.
Jarrett Bowie looks the part.
Dayton Howard made a play a year ago.
Reese Vanderzee before his injury,
he looked like he was on his way to stardom.
You're bringing Sam Phillips to add some speed
from the outside from Chattanooga.
I don't remember ever seeing at least this much depth
for a long time at wide receiver.
Yeah. And so that's going to be kind of the, again, things you want to see from the spring
game, who's where and how they all kind of fit in. Cause I do think this is a really
good group and this is probably one of the better groups in the long run. And again,
goes back to the staying healthy thing. Um, you know, you can withstand an injury or two,
but you still kind of want to see where that
group all comes together.
And again, you're right.
I mean, we won't know what that passing game really looks like until next fall, you know,
until we get that kids day thing, you know, in August, because then Mark Grunowski will
be full speed, etc, etc.
But I do think that this is a really good group.
And I think that it's probably a place that in the last couple of years,
that was one of your biggest worries.
Now it's probably farther down the list, I would think.
John Bowencamp joining us.
John, you done with football TC?
Let's move to basketball.
Let's start with the women, John, because you were there,
I don't know if you missed, in the last,
you've covered a lot of women's basketball and there were a lot of, um, you know, empty seats, uh, at, uh, in
your career.
So, but Raina Harmon is where I want to go.
And I guess, um, her loss, how big is it?
Or maybe we kind of overlooking this a little bit because, you know, for some of
the media myself had my hands way up there, um, not, not exactly, you know, for some of the media, myself, my hand's way up there. Not exactly, you know, up to speed on Lisa's staffs that have been there in the past, or Jan Jensen.
She played a huge role on this team, and she's very popular, outgoing.
How big of a loss is she going to be as she moves on and finally gets her opportunity?
That may be something we find out. mean I because I do think you know I
clearly she was ready for this opportunity and and it didn't surprise me that it came
up and it's a it's a good program to be at for her and I and I think it's a good starting
place for her as a head coach. But we're going to we may find out I mean I again she'll you
know start fill that role you still got to see what you're bringing. But she was a big part in recruiting. She was a big part
in the chemistry of this team. I mean, just the way she was. And I think she's going to
be a big miss. I think it's, you know, we're going to see that, I think, maybe in the next
year. Because, you know, again, she was such an influential part of this staff under Lisa was an influential part last year a
really good voice within that locker room and so I do think that her departure
is going to be a miss I think. And a miss in the transfer portal the UCLA
Guard missed on that one of course Aleah Guyton has committed to Illinois she's
gonna be in a line I'm the left-of to face her now over the next couple of seasons.
What what about that guard position?
Because I don't know how much of that ideal you've seen or people that you've talked to.
I the people I talk to see her more of a combo guard.
Yeah, she can handle the ball, but she's not a full time point guard.
They need a point guard transfer portal.
They need to hit one here and our options starting to dry up.
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely.
Because part of that is as you talked about the uncertainty,
kids that are looking at the portal are looking for minutes.
And at that position, somebody is looking at and say, you know,
am I going to get a lot of minutes there or are they set?
Are you know, is this, you know, what is my role going to be?
And when you don't have that defined role, a lot of kids then start looking
elsewhere. And I think that's kind of what's happened here. And, you know, again,
there's players out there that got you look through that portal and ending
portal. Same thing. So many players out there. You're going to be,
you probably should be able to find somebody, but at the same time,
if they don't, you're still set up, I think, to where you can do
a lot of things, but you would like to get a little bit of experience help. But you know,
these misses, it didn't really surprise me because again, kids are looking for a lot
of different things. And right now, I don't know what they have. And again, money, we
talk about money. What kind of money do they have?
What, what are, how many minutes? So they could get a lot of those factors.
I think maybe you're playing into some of these.
Yeah. I go back to the Hank Brown thing. We both,
both believe they've got their quarterback in the future, but it's a taste,
day and age. Can you be certain? Right?
You know, I, you know,
I was looking today with the football portal open now,
and you're starting to see a lot of really big names, FCS guys,
that kid from North Dakota state, the freshmen running back that just entered,
he's going to break the bank and he's gonna, he's got a chance. I think.
So again, you know, if you're these FCS schools, you think you're all set.
Now all of a sudden you're getting rated again.. And it's really going to be fascinating to see the next couple of days on guys that come out
and get in the portal at all levels and where that all kind of plays out.
We got Amaleva. Now he's got a new contact. So we anticipate he knows where he's going to be.
John, how does this end? How do we get through this era
and get some kind of normalcy here?
Is it gonna take Congress?
Is it going to take contracts
and them becoming employees?
What's the end game?
I think it's a combination of the two
and yet I still keep seeing a lawsuit
somewhere down the road,
uproots it all again.
I think that while the craziness is just...
Every day you see something that should surprise you and it's now at that point
where it doesn't surprise you. I was looking through that
women's basketball portal list and there's some teams out there where every
player is in the portal especially if it's lower level.
It's like, how do you rebuild that?
I don't know where it goes.
I really don't.
And it's like, I don't know.
But I think we're a long way away from settling.
So I think we've got years of chaos ahead.
Absolutely do.

taking a look at Ant-Man and what he's going to be able to do against the Lakers. From three pointers
to steals to assists, FanDuel has so many ways to bet your
favorite player props. Plus, after the game tips off, I love
this, you can even combine live prop bets into a same game
parlay for a chance to win big. That's right. Don't have to do
it before the game begins. You can do it live in game. Don't
miss out. Head to FanDuel.com to claim your $250

Trencona back with you one final time Lockdown Hawkeyes thanks for being with us as always
and making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day. Iowa with a comeback victory they looked lethargic in their midweek matchup against Bradley this week. A Bradley team that isn't great and you kind of look at the rest of the slate for Iowa going forward outside of that game against St. Thomas. These midweek games are against the bad teams. Bradley's 5- 27. They got down and it looked like any hope
at all of being an NCAA tournament team very well could be out the window. Give up a run in the
first. Give up three more in the third. You're down four nothing. Iowa though explodes six runs in the
third inning and they coast to the 12-5 victory. That sets up this weekend as Iowa goes to Michigan.
The Hawkeyes sitting at 14 and four in the big 10.
Again, the big concern is the RPI number.
But Iowa at 14 and four, a 22 and 11 overall.
Number 89 though in the RPI.
That is the problem with this resume currently.
But you go to Michigan, you win a series there.
What they still have remaining against Oregon, against Oregon State, those two series will
be huge. Even though Washington won, there are opportunities for not just victories,
but quality victories. Iowa has dug themselves, pitted themselves a little bit into a corner.
They can't afford maybe more than one series loss and it can't be a sweep. They could lose
one of these series, but I think one is kind of the max
if you're talking about putting together a tournament resume.
Still a lot of work that needs to be done on that front,
but it begins this weekend against a Michigan team
that's very talented and has been inconsistent
throughout the course of the year.
Here lately though, they're red hot.
They have won seven in a row,
including four different seven ending victories.
They're swinging the bats well, they're doing it.
Admittedly, last weekend, their weekend series
was not against the Big Ten team,
it was against Mount St. Mary's.
So that also has something to do with it,
but opened up with a road victory on Sunday,
a week ago against Oregon,
and then they have continued the winning streak.
They're hot, Iowa's hot, should be a great series, an important one for Iowa baseball.
That will do it. Thanks for being with us, and thanks for making Locked On Hawkeyes
