2025 Nissan Armada stay with us for the Armada team of the week later in the episode.
While we get started today with basketball talk, it is March and yes, we have a Iowa men's basketball team that continues
into the Big Ten tournament. Yes, it's not where we wanted, but our conversation starts today
with an interesting dynamic. Iowa not playing in the postseason NCAA tournament.
We know that, short of winning five games in five days, coming up starting on Wednesday in the Big Ten tournament. No,
it's not the NIT, the also-ran tournament. Back in the day used to be the bigger tournament,
not the case for the last, what, 80 years or so? No, not that one either. It is the new ran tournament back in the day used to be the bigger tournament, not the case for the last what 80 years or so. No,
not that one either. It is the new crown tournament. We're
gonna talk about that. It's happening in Las Vegas and kind
of an interesting way to look at things for this Iowa
basketball team and the way this very well could shape up
for the rest of the season. We're also gonna be joined by
Scott Dockerman from the athletic. He was in Carver
Hawke Arena last week on Thursday
and had a cat burn seat. Watching Margaret McCaffrey make her way over, we'll talk a little
bit about that and a few other topics, Iowa basketball and Iowa sports related with Scott
Dockerman from the Athletic coming up here in just a little bit. Plus what exactly is going on with
Iowa softball? We're going to dive a little bit deeper into that as Iowa now on to their third coach of the year. We had one
stepping away, Coach Gillespie, because of health and then what transpired a
couple of weeks ago. We'll dive a little bit deeper into that one and another
one of those odd stories that seemingly only get with University of Iowa
Athletic Department. There's always something to talk about and that's good things for us.
Let's get into it though and kick things off with Las Vegas. Now Las Vegas is near and
dear to my heart. It's one of my favorite places to go. A lot of great vacations out
there. If you listen to my radio show, you know our connections that we have with Circa
out there, the biggest sports book in the world. So one of my all-time favorite places. And I will tell you that Las
Vegas is something that, as a gambler, as somebody that enjoys wagering on sports, that enjoys throwing
dice on the craps table, just the sights, the sounds, the glimmer, the glint, all of it. I
absolutely am enthralled by Las Vegas. Now things change and they evolve throughout the time,
but when this new basketball tournament was put together and announced last year, I want to say
it was in April, maybe right around the Final Four, it was an eye roll, right? We of course have had
the NIT and for 32 teams, they expanded it for a while. I think it was 40 teams for a little bit.
They've done a bunch of different things with it,
but really the biggest part of these second tier tournaments
that have come in, win a couple of games.
There's been fun runs.
You know, I go back to the nineties
when Iowa made that run,
they got to the final eight of the NIT.
What a couple of games.
I think one of them was against Ohio, Gary Trent, the shack of the Mack when he was playing at the Ohio University. That's
what it was. And beat them for the second time that season. Got beat by Pete Lysicki
and Penn State of memory. So that aside, it was a fun run. And they played a game in the
mark in Moline. That was cool. And we've seen some of those crowds for the NIT more energized
than we're used to for
Iowa men's basketball. And a reason for that is the people that want to go, it's not the season
ticket holders, the people that get it from their company or for their company or business, things
like that. It was people that really wanted to go. We saw some good charged up environments.
You know, when Fran had the squad early in his tenure that made that run all the way to the
championship, that was fun. And the NIT can be a good deal. And when the CBI's come along and the CIT, these
next tier below the NIT tournaments, you scoff and you laugh and they don't matter in the
grand scheme of things. I'm writing something for a mid-major coach maybe to put it on their
resume. But this crown basketball tournament is different.
It's different for a couple of different reasons.
You start because it's not going to be
mid-majors or low-major teams that are going to be competing.
You're going to have teams featuring schools
from the Big 10, from the Big 12, and the Big East.
That's a good starting point.
And at minimum, two teams from each of those conferences. So
One thing that I have not found and I've been looking around about this and trying to figure out exactly
How this is going to go? It's a single elimination 16 team tournament
After the automatic qualifiers two automatic qualifiers will come from each of the conferences
So at least six of the 16 teams will come from the Big 10, the Big 12, and the Big East.
All right, that's six.
What I'm wondering, though, this is an event that is being put on FS1 and Fox.
This is going to be put together, something as Fox becomes deeper and deeper into college athletics,
this is something that they want to do is it gonna morph into the SEC programs the
ACC they got the NIT the Big Ten the Big East they're here then the Big 12 is
kind of stuck in the middle maybe but what we don't know is if the Big 12 Big
Ten is going to mandate the teams have to decline a bid for the NIT in order to get there.
You think that that's very likely.
Here's another part about this that I think makes it pretty likely that I was going to be
heading to Las Vegas if there is postseason.
Fran McCaffrey said today that he thinks that there is.
Will Fran be a part of that?
That's a conversation that we'll get to here in a moment.
But you look through the Big Ten standings.
In order to qualify for postseason,
remember you have to be 500 or better.
At least those are some of the old rules that were intact.
I have not seen anything that indicates for the crown,
if that's also the way that it has to be.
But Rutgers has a losing record.
Unless they win at least two games, they're
going to be below 500. USC is below 500. Again, they have to win two games to get on the right
side of it. Same thing with Minnesota. Iowa at 16 and 15, even with the loss against Ohio
State, they're 500. That means they qualified, or at least in the old system have qualified.
And if Indiana gets on the right side of the bubble and becomes an NCAA tournament team,
if Ohio State beats Iowa, maybe has to win one more game after that.
If they do that though, they're going to be an NCAA tournament team.
Well, if Rutgers doesn't qualify, USC doesn't qualify, you're down to Nebraska, Northwestern, Iowa for those spots. Maybe
Penn State. You go that low. Now here's the other part about it. A lot of what-ifs, a
lot of scenarios where we just don't know. Because I'd love to go there. I think an
opportunity to watch Iowa one more time, but do it in Las Vegas. Yeah, that sounds pretty
good. I definitely could make something like that work. However, as we're creating all these what-if
scenarios, what if, and what I still believe is going to happen, that Fray McCaffrey is no longer
the head coach at the University of Iowa. And now what do you do? What do you do in that situation
where you have a team,
guys are gonna be looking to get into the transfer portal,
this basketball tournament doesn't start
until the week of the Final Four.
This will start on Monday,
right after the Elite Eight games finish up.
So this is not something that happens right away.
It's March 31st through April 6th in Las Vegas.
So you got this group of guys that are just sitting there, possibly not knowing who their
coach is going to be.
Who's going to take over in an interim role?
Is it Matt Gaetans?
Do you go that direction?
Now, Matt Gaetans, I think, would be the one that would make the most sense, right?
He's an alum.
He's been on the bench.
If you're going a different direction, if you're looking a different way, that would make the most sense, right? He's an alum He's been on the bench if you're going a different direction if you're looking a different way
That would certainly make a whole lot more sense to go that direction
But he's also young he's never been a head coach before he's never
been a guy that has been running a program and calling plays and doing those and
Are you gonna do that? Is Matt Gaetan a guy that Beth Getz wants to see there?
And I think that's another component that we also have to realize and look at and understand
is Beth Getz is going to have a lot of say in the way that this all plays out.
Is it just easier for Iowa to decline a bit and say, I'm sorry, but as we're searching
for a new coach coach it doesn't make
sense for us to wait two weeks guys are going to be entering the transfer portal many of them maybe
have already entered the portal at that point as it opens up a week previous we're not going to go
do you hand the reins off to Tristan Spurlock and Courtney Aldridge or Eldridge or there's just so
many different ways to look at and go through
that we don't know but the possibility is real and if there is postseason I truly believe it's
not going to be the NIT it's going to be the crown tournament in Las Vegas. We continue here
Lockdown Hawkeyes more Iowa basketball talk speaking of making a change we'll get the
perspective of Scott Dockerman plus he had a good view of Margaret McCaffrey making her way over to the Iowa bench.
And just a weird scene at Carver Hawkeye Arena last week on Thursday.
We'll talk about that with Scott Dockerman.
When we come back, this is Locked On Hawkeyes.

Any longer, Dr. and Ken, thanks for coming on.
How are you?
I'm good, guys. How's it going today? Well, better. Twitter just came back.
Is that what was going on?
Yeah, it just shakes. Did you have an outage, Doc?
What's that?
Did you have a Twitter outage?
Oh, yeah. Yeah, absolutely, I did. But it's all right. Sometimes I'm not so sad about that.
Yeah. I don't know. I've got an addiction to it.
Yes, you do. I can't, I can't. You know what? It's crazy, right? Before,
before the, we used to have computers in front of us.
We used to look at the newspaper and when the newspapers were late,
we went and do it in the morning show. You think, yeah, it was just, oh my God,
what are we going to do? No Twitter, not that you need it, but since it's there, it's kind of a crutch thing anyways, it's back and we're grateful for
that. Hawks had a nice win yesterday, Doc. I don't think in the grand scheme of things, in fact,
in the grand scheme of things, it doesn't change anything. We shouldn't be, you know, passing out
flowers for being the 15th of 15 teams to get into the big 10 tournament, but at the same time,
it's really nice for Peyton Sanford to be able to play another game. Bronze likewise for him. Fell well.
For the seniors to at least get one more trip to the Big 10 tournament to be included in
that, certainly way better than what the Huskers are going through here today.
Yeah, the Huskers had an outside chance at best, but still an outside chance
to maybe tweak in to the bubble discussion.
I mean, if had they won, they would have been 18 and 13 and, and maybe a win, maybe two
wins at the Big Ten tournament kind of gets to that 20 win plateau.
And then, you know, they could get in that discussion and make a case and who knows where it's gone there. But instead I will played really well. And, uh, you know,
Iowa, every time it looked like, uh, you know, that things were starting to slip away, they
stepped up and, you know, that this has been a trying season for Iowa, no question. Um,
but they, they finished the regular season with a winning record. Um,
that's something that maybe kind of goes unchecked a little bit. Now, granted, you go back to
those games in December and November and you can see why, but still, it's still a winning
record. And, um, and I think they, they really, you know, just consistently have played hard
and played well, um, you know, for the most part against comparable teams and, and they get to go to Indianapolis, Nebraska doesn't, and they'll
have at least one more chance here to extend their season.
You know, for what we do, we're not supposed to have rooting interests,
right?
We're supposed to look at things objectively, but it was hard not to feel
good for Peyton Sanford, seeing how his senior season went, and then to see his
teammates on the floor with him as he was doing the post-game interview on the hardwood.
I think that, at least to me, that said a lot, Doc,
to have a guy trying season,
not the season that any of these guys wanted,
but all his teammates were out there with him
one final time and maybe getting that congratulatory,
you know, handshake from everybody afterwards.
That was a really cool scene.
I really liked the way the game ended.
Me too, both of them, yeah. cool scene. I really liked the way the game ended.
I thought, you know, when you, Juan, Gary fouled out and then Iowa fans, or I mean, Iowa players met him, Brock Harding and, uh, and Peyton Sanford met him,
you know, kind of gave him a slap and a, and a hug.
I thought that spoke a lot about sportsmanship and it's kind of funny when
you think, think back to the football game in November,
and that was completely the opposite, right?
But I think that spoke volumes for both teams and then for
Peyton Sanford on a personal and that level to be able to do that in your final
regular season game, he came back and it didn't materialize the way he wanted to.
But then for his younger brother to have a double-double in that game, I think that really
it gives them a good memory.
And there's a lot of things going on with Iowa as we know that need to be fixed, changed,
and possibly wholesale changed.
But I think in this situation, you can also feel good for them and appreciate what they
did for the program or what Peyton Sanford did for the program over his four years.
Apparently, I think Traore changed the television in the locker room.
So they're watching Peyton on TV in the locker room.
And for whatever reason, Traore was in charge of the clicker and changed the channel.
And that caused all of Peyton's, all the rest of the Hawks to run back out onto the floors. What I read now,
I don't know if that I was there obviously, but we'll see if that's how it
plays out. You know, you brought up Price Amford. I can't tell you that I saw
this coming. I wasn't convinced he was a big 10 player. You know, he didn't,
he had his moments as a
freshman and I guess I should have cut him a little bit more slack. He's played really good
and is starting to look like he's going to be assuming he's a Hawkeye next year and I have
nothing that leads me to believe otherwise. He's going to be one of the faces of this program
starting next year in all likelihood, Doc?
Yeah, he was a guy that was, you know, I would say not heavily recruited, but highly recruited.
Had a lot of schools looking at him.
And, you know, you kind of wondered, you know,
is he just kind of there because of the brother situation
or is he more that type of player?
I think he's proven that he is a Big Ten player.
You know, he's been off the bench, um, this year.
And, but when he's come in, I think he's been as consistent as any player
that's come off the bench for Iowa.
And I know that's not saying a ton, but, but I think, uh, the other day,
and, you know, to, to go through and play almost 30 minutes, um, you know,
16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, no turnovers. That's quality basketball and what
they're asking him to do. His plus minus was the best on the court. I think he's definitely
a big 10 player. I think he's going to be a strong player for Iowa, probably a starter next year.
And who knows what the future holds, but at this very moment, he's gonna be a building block.
So how this goes in the win a game, win a couple even,
we know it's not gonna come to a conclusion
with the championship.
This team's not winning five games in five days.
How quickly does Beth Goetz make her decision?
How quickly do we find out whenever it goes final? Is
it something that happens quickly? Because, Doc, we've been asked by Tom Kaker, we got
to get the story when it went down with you later, how it went down and in comparison,
how you think Beth Getz is going to do it compared to the way that we saw Gary Barta
do it.
Good question. I know she's been doing her due diligence for a long time on this topic
I know she's whatever decision she makes it's not gonna be you know
Okay, do they make this three-pointer against Ohio State and if they advance then I think
Or if they miss they were gonna fire him, you know, and you know fans emotions can swing
You know from game to game and our conversations swing from game to game.
But, but really, you know, that decision is, is major.
It's a major decision.
And, and, and the thing is that each time they play it's, it becomes
a more difficult decision.
No matter which way you look at it, the team is playing hard for him.
He does have some talent.
They have some talent coming in.
He is the all time winningest coach.
This year is the first time they've had, you know, a losing big 10 season since,
what, 18, and this is only the second one since 2013.
That's, those are important numbers.
I mean, and what Tom Izzo said last week was, is relevant that I was in the bottom
part of the Big Ten
when it comes to things like resources and NIL and all those things.
And all of that needs to be addressed.
Then there's the flip side, which is Big Ten basketball is a business.
We look at the arena.
This is the lowest attendance since at least 1965, so 60 years, and back then they used estimates, that there's not a lot of, you know, there's
not a lot of fans that are kind of found an engagement with the program over time, that
that needs to change. And I think what best decision has to be is, can Fran be the person to bring the fans back? And how, if so, how can he do it in
a way that works, that's suitable for him, that fans will believe and fans will come
to the arena and they'll be able to do it all. And I think that's going to be, that's
probably going to be just a tremendously difficult decision because unlike we expect parents
at some point to retire, that's going to be the most important decision, but that's not going to be as polarizing
as this one.
No doubt.
So doc, go back to the Licklider.
Kaker keeps saying, he got to ask doc, he got to ask doc.
Were you camped out in the offices?
Did you get the scoop first?
Were you the first media member to know what was transpiring?
I knew he was getting fired.
It was on a Monday morning and he had a meeting with Gary Barta at nine o'clock in the morning.
So I went to outside his office at eight thirty in the morning that morning and saw him walk
in and talk to him briefly for a second.
He's kind of surprised to see me and I just kind of stood there and then you know went to his meeting and at 908 he left the meeting or was and walked into his office and grabbed his jacket and left the
building so yeah I knew what would come and then I was there for it and he didn't talk to me on the
way out he did a little bit on the way in. Eight minutes is how long it took though. Yeah. Nine o'clock meeting starts,
nine oh eight, he's out the door. Wow. Yeah. Happens quick. Yeah. But what are you
gonna say? Right. Exactly. Yeah. And that's unfortunately kind of the way
things went there and it just feels like a program. Hey, you had a front row seat.
What was happened last Thursday with Margaret McCaffrey making her way over
to the Iowa bench?
Where were you able to ascertain out of that situation?
Yeah, it was it was really unusual because you just don't see people let alone
Spouses of coaches do those types of things but that was at the 1151
I think was written so right at the under 12 the second half
That I think she was mad about some of their calls. That's what I could deduct I think it was written so right at the under 12 second half That I think she was mad about some of the calls that's what I could deduct I think from the situation
Larry Serato was on the floor
so, you know, there isn't been a lot of love lost between the McCaffrey family and then and and she came over and was
pointing and yelling and I couldn't tell she was yelling at Fran about the get after Larry or what,
but it was very visible and surprising.
And everybody was kind of jaw hit the floor because it's just not an unusual
type of thing to see at a game.
But anyway, yeah, that's so I took a picture of it and it was out there because
it is newsworthy when
somebody does that and um yeah I mean it certainly is the part of the part of the mosaic that is the
McCaffrey family Iowa basketball over time. No no kidding unless you followed Wichita State
basketball a decade ago when Marsha was still there maybe haven't seen that from a spouse
since then because she she was something uh no doubt doubt about that. Doc, Iowa is going to hold some sort of a,
once switching to football, once we get to the end of spring practice, as opposed to a number of
schools that are just doing away with anything in front of the, of their fans, Iowa is going to do
something in all likelihood, just to practice, probably
not a spring game, but unlike many who are just, you know, just refuse to do it because
I guess they're worried about, you know, giving opposing schools an opportunity to watch a
player that they may have an NIL wishlist for.
Is that what the reason behind all the cancellations and
you know what i would plans on doing um i would say that there that's a reason that's a factor
being discussed i think in nebraska was the one that really brought it up and other schools feel
the same way that sometimes uh if you that open practice that coaches can come in and
analyze your roster and potentially, you know, persuade a player to move on into a different
direction. I don't know how much of that is true. It's a tough time of year for those kind of
movements, but I assume that there is some truth to that.
Everybody is very paranoid.
And so you will get that, um, those kinds of things happen.
Uh, I would say with Iowa that they've never done a spring game, not since Hayden Fry was the coach and, and the anticipation is they would do the same type of thing
that they always have, which is kind of more of a wrap up scrimmage, uh, you know, featuring, you know, players versus players.
But a lot of those situations before there were a lot of injuries.
And so if you would see 10, 12 players that were sitting out to a couple of them because
of the spring, a couple of them because of post-season, uh, you know, post season cleanups
and surgeries. So, but when it comes to worrying about people spying on your practices,
that's also very insecure and you kind of wonder how much of that you've got to
pay into because you really still have to engage your fans.
You want your fans to go there to get autographs to see the team and
enjoy their surroundings. So I think doing something along the lines of canceling a
spring game or an open viewing session I think is counterproductive for football programs to
worry about maybe losing one player and when in fact you may lose some of your fans and ultimately
that hurts worse.
Scott Dockerman from the Athletic Doc, what are you working on this week?
I'm writing about the Big 10's championship drought of 25 years and they're 0-8 in the
final four since then. I've had lots of conversations over the last week or two
and I went to Am the last week or two.
I went to Ames last week, so I'm writing a story about Iowa State entering the NCAA
tournament.
I've got a couple of bigger stories, but as far as this week goes, it's kind of watch
and learn.
I'm going to be at the Big Ten tournament, but it's what I was planning to do no matter
what happened yesterday.
Maybe something will happen over there as well.
Good stuff.
Scott Dockerman from The Athletic Doc. Thank you.
Enjoy Indianapolis. We'll talk to you next week. Thanks, Doc.
Okay, thank you.
Yep. Good to talk to you. Scott Dockerman as we check in on Iowa

up today, a story that always falls to the kind of back burner.
Two years ago, we talked a lot more Iowa softball.
They had that fun run in the postseason tournament.
They didn't make the NCAA tournament.
This is a proud program that, this is a proud program that obviously has done a
whole lot throughout the time.
You go back to Gail Blevins,
what she was able to accomplish, what she was able to do. College World Series appearances.
One of the power programs in softball that has fallen by the wayside and you look at just how
desolate it's been over the last 20 years, 25 years almost going back now and looking at the
way the program has fallen you see it all the
outstanding softball players from the state of Iowa that leave the state and compete at a high
level you see this success that programs even like Northern Iowa have had in comparison with local
kids and here's Iowa just floundering around and it started the year in just such a an odd start after we see coach Gillespie stepping away.
So then Brian Levin comes in and want to give a lot of credit to the Daily Iowan. Of course,
the student newspaper, two writers over there, Colin Vogtsmeyer and Jamie Martin trainer
did great work of diving a little bit deeper into this story,
and you can find it over at thedailyiowin.com. But hearing the culture part of it, and it just
led me to believe, and the article has a lot more details than I have, than I'll get into here today
to hear today about conversations being had,
the team dynamic about things. And in today's very political environment,
very us versus them environment
that is created in a political landscape
and how it can seep into college athletics
and you see something there.
And conversations that we used to have
and not be able to have, at least in the same vein,
and it's more difficult to have those conversations just because of the divisiveness that it creates. It was a story I
thought that was interesting. The way that it got to that point, for a coach to walk away, it's tough for a group of
people that don't feel like their voice was being heard, also difficult.
Just a lot of different angles. It's something that we talk about these teams so many times,
and it's something that I know I forget about. Is that dynamic in athletics, not just about who has
the better players, who has the better coaches, who has the bigger NIL budget, but the small things.
Do you get along? Do you
like playing with other people? Do you like being a teammate with them? Are they good
people? Are they people that you want to hang out with outside a practice of games? And
sometimes when that goes awry, it's difficult to bring it back and feels like maybe there's
some work that needs to be done with Iowa softball. But again, dailyiowin.com is where you can find that information. A really well done story last week from Colin Voltmeier and Jamie Martin trainer.
Shout out to them for the great work that they're doing. Good start for Iowa softball. They're doing it with not much of coaching experience now even on that staff and there they are. Just a lot of oddities certainly happening in that world.
Iowa baseball got a midweek win.
