I will football recruiting signing day has come and gone and yes it is much different than it was in the past that first
Wednesday of February was a national holiday for a lot of
sports fans out there and certainly college sports fans
not the case anymore. In fact, Iowa just signed one guy,
Jacob Wallace and we'll talk a little bit about him but the
class as a whole that's coming up here in just a little bit
plus we'll be joined by David Eichold from 24 seven sports Hawkeye insider.com. His thoughts mostly on Iowa basketball, the
scene as he was a carver over the weekend for what we saw in the buggy upset win. But
we begin today and we'll talk some men's basketball as well as Iowa after the loss to Purdue tries
to right the ship at home as a welcome in Wisconsin this weekend. But we begin today
with another win for the Iowa women's basketball team.
And after their fifth consecutive loss here a couple
of weeks ago, it felt like maybe this team was circling
the drain. Perhaps these players that were thrust into
bigger roles, the Sydney of Folters, the Taylor McCabes,
the Kylie Fearbox, that they were playing roles as starters
now and important
pieces to a team that didn't have CC22 on the team anymore, that this was going to be in a
difficult process for them to overcome and to take that bigger role. There were questions about
Jan Jensen. Did they pick the right coach? In fact, I had that thought in the back of my mind. And
well, when it's in the back of my mind, it usually comes out here as we talk to you each and every day and since then this team has figured it out now we can look back at some of those games individually and we look back to certainly the last loss point in that one. I mean, that was incredibly frustrating the way that that played out.
And just overall what that team, what we thought that team was going to be and potentially what they
were going to do coming off the skin. But they bounced back and that's what they do. And now
you got the big upset win against USC. That is going to be a quality victory that is going to
be there for a really long time. When you look at their resume,
other bubble teams, other teams in a similar elk and wherever
that turns out to be for this Iowa women's team, it's going
to be something that not many bubble teams are going to have
not many teams that are maybe fighting to stay out of the
opening round those kind of things if that's where I will
eventually falls that's where they are. But now they followed
up with this one a road victory against a Minnesota team. Now look the Gophers were not as good as their 12 and 0 start to the year
you saw them early in the non-conference and they kept piling up victory after victory after victory
but then you look a little bit deeper there wasn't a whole lot of depth to it in fact they
did not have a top 100 win in the net during the non-conference portion of the schedule.
In fact they only beat a couple of teams with winning records. Eastern Illinois who's 14 and 8
yet their net is 167 and their other win against a team that had a winning record was against Vermont
with a net of 108. Not exactly the who's who. This is a solid team. Gopher's going to be a bubble team, I think.
But to go on the road and to do it with what they had to deal with on top of it.
If you didn't see the story. So normally for a game like this, Iowa travels and they travel, be a plane, right?
So you get to see the charter. If you watch the videos on social media, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
you'll see them going through. You'll see a little snippet video, maybe make their way
to the plane or a shot from the plane. But because of the ice storm yesterday, they weren't
able to depart. So this comes from Bailey Turner. And Bailey does a great job with communications over there with the women's basketball program. So, over
20 hours. This was starting on Wednesday. Bus departure at 4
PM. Shut doors, head to deice as they get on the plane. Attempt
to take off at 545. Abort takeoff halfway through the
runway two minutes later. Taxi down the runway,
hang out, board the plane again at 745. Eight o'clock, engine doesn't start, wheels are
frozen. Nine o'clock, PM, pilot says we can't go. Nine thirty de-ice wheels and props on
plane. Nine forty five tow plane to proper de-icing pad. 10 o'clock at night again remember this all started at 4 o'clock
1030 continued to the ice and wait for clearance 11 o'clock
No airport will take us and the pilot deems it unsafe to fly
Well seven hours later
Maybe Tony is something bus picks up the team from the Cedar Rapids Airport
Railroad train attracts hardly moving at 12 10 that one cracked me up 12 30
arrived at Hotel Kirkwood eat dinner one o'clock go to bed 9 30 a.m. They get up arrive back at the
airport de ice for a third time at 10 45 the flight leaves at 11 35 they landed Minneapolis at 12 34
this afternoon and then they get a win.
They come out hot and knocking down three pointers.
Four threes in the first half.
And it was a little bit of everything.
You know, one of my biggest takeaways from this game
is what maybe that win against USC did for this team
in terms of just the confidence
that they can play in this level.
They didn't shoot it great.
Mentioned the first quarter hit four three-pointers.
They only had two three-pointers the rest of the game,
but both of those came late in the fourth quarter
of the game.
I mean, they went basically 28 minutes without a three-pointer.
Didn't shoot it particularly well, 41% from the floor.
Free throws weren't great either.
They hit their last four of that one.
Before that, they were sitting at 10 of 18 from the free throw line so there was a lot of things that you can
point out say boy this could be a concern this could be an issue but the confidence that you see
building back with Kylie Feerbach you know she played so well defensively against Juju Watkins and
the acclaim that came with that doing that against one of the most prolific scores in college
basketball one of the best players period in all women's college hoops to do that and then you saw
that confidence maybe build with the shot a little bit because she was confident it took it a couple
times had a great cut to the rim and a great pass from okay Grady finishing there in the fourth
quarter so you see that building with her. Sydney Fulcher's back doing her thing and I don't know if
it was the knee injury that slowed her up earlier this year but this is a Sydney Fulter is back doing her thing. And I don't know if it was the knee injury that slowed her up
earlier this year.
But this is a Sydney Fulter that we knocked down
a couple open threes.
Got to be able to do that.
But then the tenacity, the toughness, the south side
Chicago, she's got it all.
Sydney Fulter there making the dirty plays,
doing the dirty work, and finishing with the double
double in the game.
McCabe didn't shoot it well until she did.
Knocked out just a huge three there on the left wing late in
that one. Really felt confident after Minnesota came all the
way back. You know, Iowa controls this game throughout
the first half. Any run that Minnesota had, Iowa had a
response. Same thing in the third quarter and all of a
sudden like that, the snap of a finger that lead wilted away
and it reminded you a lot, at least me, of the Nebraska game
that we saw earlier this season where many of the same kind of things were happening, yet they had an answer. They
were able to do it with Hannah Stolke. Hannah eventually fouls out again, played with foul
trouble again, yet Hannah Stolke, the confidence that she's playing with and just how good
she is now coming off that concussion and what we've seen out of her. This team, they're
built different. And this is a women's basketball team
that's obviously different without Caitlin Clark out there.
I mean, it goes without saying we know that.
But looking at a couple of numbers,
we know this team's better on the defensive end.
I mean, you could tell that more connected on that end.
They got to play at a different kind of pace also,
not playing without Caitlin Clark.
So looking up the analytic numbers,
these come from Bart Torvik.
And Bart Torvik, his numbers go back five years now women's basketball
So we get the whole Caitlin Clark era and now here your number one minus CC
So I will over those four years finish second second first and first in offensive efficiency great offensive team this year
They're 32nd, which is still good. Very good. Remember we're talking about
360 some D1 teams when you're 32nd, that's really
good. Defensively though, going back, four years ago, Iowa was 190th in the country in defensive
efficiency. Woof, that's friendly. Then 96, 59th in last year, improved to 42nd. This year,
they got the 22nd best team in defensive efficiency in the country.
You see that showing up, their ability to generate steals, to get out pressure with
a myriad of different ways.
And then what they can do inside with Stolke, obviously her athleticism inside, the size
of O'Grady when she's in there playing, they can go big, they can go small, they can beat
you a myriad of different ways.
Really fun to watch.
It is different, no doubt.
But four in a row now for this women's team
and the concerns we talked about,
are they a bubble team, the momentum
that possibly could be thwarted
if they would not make the NCAA tournament this year?
Looks like that's gonna be off the table.
Look, if Iowa now, with this win, finishes things up
and if they just go down the stretch
and they're able to win the two games that they're absolutely supposed to
they have two games remaining that are
Their sling dogs they really are they are
Matchups against Wisconsin at the end of the year also a matchup against Rutgers both of them at home you win both of those
I think you're a tournament team, but now you look at this game Monday against Nebraska,
little revenge.
They shot lights out in that game.
His defense seems to be playing a lot better
since that game for the Iowa women.
You steal that one, you get UCLA at home.
Nope, we saw him do it against USC
and Lauren Betts is gonna be a nightmare inside
of what she can do.
However,
UCLA hasn't seen an environment like Harbor Hawkeye Arena is going to be.
We will see. Going to Ohio State is going to be tough. The Buckeyes want revenge. Iowa, we've kind of rubbed their face in it a couple of times throughout the last
four years. And that certainly group of ladies, along with the coaching staff,
have not forgot about that. The Buckeyes will be ready to go. It'll be a tough task, but this team feels different. And this team, the likelihood
is they're not going to be able to do enough to pull themselves up, you know, to secure
a top four seed. They'd have to have an incredible stretch here to make something like that happen.
But they're going to be a tournament team. That is good. Fun to watch and a great win
anytime you beat the Gullfurs. For me, a North Iowa guy, always love to beat
Minnesota. We continue here, Lockdown Hawkeyes. We're gonna
talk more basketball. Little about what we saw at Carver
over the weekend with David Eichold. He was in the building
for it. We'll get his perspective of that one. Also
talk some men's basketball with him. And then we'll get into
some football recruiting. Iowa Signing Day has come and gone.
We'll take a look one more time at the class of 2025 as we continue. This is Locked on Hawkeyes.

Thank you for coming on David. I call before we get into last
night, etc. I want to applaud you. Your podcast with Caitlin
Clark that came out last early last week was terrific. It really
was I'm guessing that went over very, very well.
You can tell she's very comfortable with you, and if you're a Caitlin Clark fan, I enthusiastically
recommend that you find a David Icold spot, because, David, that was really well done.
Thank you, man. I really appreciate that. The traction has been really awesome to see, and I,
you know, when you get Caitlin Clark Clark you kind of expect that but she was
very gracious with her time and it was kind of fun to just sort of reminisce on everything and kind of take the spotlight away from
the fever who in their own right or making their own move
I don't know either there's their eyes on the the betting markets went from plus
1300 to win the title next year now I've seen them as high as plus 350.
So I mean, that is crazy, crazy line movement,
but I really, really appreciate the endorsement.
I know, well done.
I want to get to something Trent and I just
batted around a little bit.
Owen Freeman, and he was the very last question
that the Framon Caffrey's presser after the game
was asked, you know why?
I noticed, I don't know who it was, but I'm paraphrasing. I noticed Owen Freeman wasn't on the bench and Fran pointed out he had surgery
the day before on his finger. I just found that odd David that, you know, finger surgery,
you know, it doesn't seem like the most severe surgery a person could undergo and to be gone
that long and you
hear all the rumors etc. I found it odd he wasn't there yesterday David am I
reading too much into it? No you're not and it's very interesting just because I
don't want to speak on what I don't know you know like I don't know the
intricacies of certain surgeries but at the same time how strong was the
anesthesia ifhesia for talking about
doing surgery on your finger and he can't go walk in and support his team again, this
could be incredibly valid. I I'm the farthest thing from a, from a surgeon. I cover sports
for a living. So let's make that perfectly clear. But I did find it a little bit odd,
but if he does not make the road trip with the team, then I'm going to be a little bit
more intrigued about it at that point. But yes,
I mean, obviously we all know the rumors that are circulating right now when it
comes to Owen Freeman.
And I don't think anybody should be surprised when you think about this from
last year,
Owen Freeman could have transferred last year and gotten paid probably a lot
more money than he's earning at Iowa this season. But it is interesting.
And you know, I look at it like this.
I don't know the intricacies of the injury.
Fran did say that there was risk of suffering permanent damage.
Had he continued to play on it.
But I'll tell you this.
There are certain players on Iowa's team that are far more hurt right now and are
continuing to play through it.
Then I have to imagine that
The locker room could be a little tense or that discussion might have been a little tense when when Owen and his team and Fran
And everybody involved opted for him to go get finger surgery
It's an incredibly odd situation can ask this to me the other day
We were talking about his Instagram profile that has his agent listed there and can ask me was it there before I didn't
Think so, but I wasn't sure do you know was that part of his profile beforehand or is that a new addition?
People want to reach out to own Freeman. Here's the way to contact
Yeah, you know, I think I think that's an old addition, but I could not tell you for a hundred percent
I you know, it's all to respect guys.
And I know you have to ask the question.
I completely get it.
I think we got enough, are you like enough to cover that?
I'm not going to go do updates on a kid's Instagram bio.
Again, I completely understand why you ask it.
I know people are intrigued about it, but I also look at like this, like this is
modern day college athletics. Most high profile guys or even lower
profile guys, they're going to have a way for people to reach out to their agents.
Like that, that's just sort of the era that we're living in right now.
Fair point. Uh, David, to the game itself, uh, I hate the fact that, uh, we,
we have arrived at this point where we're, well, that wasn't such a bad loss.
This was the five losses that they've had in their last six games. that we have arrived at this point where we're, well, that wasn't such a bad loss.
This was of the five losses that they've had in their last six games.
This was the best loss of the five,
but seemingly, and you know what?
It's true in a lot of ways.
I thought they were inspired last night.
Obviously Dixon Sanford played their, you know, what's off.
I thought Harding had one of his better games in some time.
It's just sad that we're at that point. That's how we're talking about this season, that it wasn't such a bad
loss last night. Yeah. I mean, I think you summed it up very well. I mean, I think that was Iowa's
most valiant effort and heart that they've showed in, you know, last couple of games, right? They
came out, they punched Purdue in the mouth, but I also thought about it like this. And by the way,
I thought the half court traps was a great kind of recognition, what punched Purdue in the mouth, but I also thought about like this. And by the way, I thought the half court traps was a great kind of recognition what they did in
the defensive adjustment. Kudos to Riley Mulvey and Evan.
So sparingly, I thought they were great in that first half stats won't light you
up,
but that sequence and Evan bronze had that block and put back way up on the
other end. I think really kind of energized everybody involved.
But I also look at it like this,
outside of the free throw shooting in that first half,
who was seven, they played a near perfect first half.
And what was the half time score?
Tied, tied, yeah.
They were tied.
And right when Bray and Smith buried that logo three,
I turned over to a couple of my media colleagues
that put on my message board and I said,
Bray and Smith is going to take over.
Like it just looks poised.
That was what really changed the momentum in my mind is him burying that shot.
I put that in my column this morning.
But you're right.
I think at this point we need to kind of take those little moral victories.
I think that's what Iowa needs to take because I've said this, I do think there's a greater
odd right now of Iowa missing the big ten tournament and making the big ten tournament
Just when you look at the way the schedule lines up they go on the road to Illinois
They go on the road to Northwestern. They're hosting Wisconsin. I think they're on the road at Rutgers in Maryland and they host Michigan State
Hmm. Yikes. I know Rutgers isn't good. I'll tell you they have two five-star talent
At home, that's not an easy place at all.
And if there is anything left in the tank for this squad, if you can't show up
after that embarrassment against the Badgers up in Madison,
having a player call out because you don't play a lick of defense.
If you come out and you're flat on this one, I mean,
it already feels like the season is over.
If they play poorly on Saturday, at least come out slow.
You know, this thing's absolutely cooked in. and there's probably a lot more to the story.
You know, I'm inclined to agree with you, but I've kind of started to think about like this.
We know that the fan base is at such an apathetic level, right? I mean, that's what we've kind of
been harping on, especially since that Minnesota loss is when I think really, really even the most diehard
friend defenders or supporters or or men's program. That's what really kind of feel the deal for them.
Is that fair to say? Yep. Now I think the bigger question becomes if Iowa struggles down the stretch
and they missed the Big Ten tournament, does apathy turn into anger again, going into the off season? Because if it doesn't,
that's when I think there needs to be a whole new level of degree of worry about this men's
basketball program.
Because I may have told you guys this a couple weeks ago, but this is why I've continued
to kind of harp on on my message board and in conversation. You would rather have an angry fan base than an apathetic fan base because anger implies
care, love, and emotion to some degree.
Apathy is accepting and you can live with or without it.
And that's going to be the danger of Iowa's kind of next month and month and a half to
really see what direction the fan base is going to go.
Regardless, the bigger question becomes what is Ramon Caffrey do,
what is Beth Gatz going to do and what's Iowa going to do regardless of how the
season ends at this point, because even if Iowa wins out,
are people really going to fully buy back in? I really don't think so.
No, nor do I. David Eichel joining us, HawkeyeInsider.com. David,
what was the difference last night
in Josh Dix's game? He was terrific coming off a game that he didn't score. They didn't
play I think the last six minutes of the game. What was his biggest difference? Was it just
the rest?
Maybe the rest helped a little bit, but I think getting him going early because the
thing with him is I wrote my column last week, some things I want to see Iowa do.
I want to see them get Josh Dix the ball early, run some step plays for him, run that free
flowing offense.
What happened on the first two possessions?
They get that defensive stop, Riley Mulvey doesn't block the shot, but he adjusts the
shot.
Iowa gets a fast break, wide open, three point look for Josh Dix.
Nothing but net.
The following possession, he takes it right to the rim, finishes it.
That's five quick points in a man and a half. And Josh Dix has always an even keel player.
He's always a very competent player. He really lets the game come to him. But last night,
I also think was he tried to be a little bit more assertive with his shots. I think that
shot he had in that final 90 seconds to tie the game back up.
He'd been hitting a shot all game. Probably
not a great look, but you live with it. Just considering how hot he was throughout the
game. But with Owen Freeman being out with I again, respectfully to Evan bronze and Riley
Mulvey and those guys in the front court, we, we kind of know I was going to need 50
a piece from Peyton and Josh at this point.
Everyone let it say, dude, doesn't step up or Brock Harding doesn't step
up. Josh Dix, I think saw there was a lack of post scoring and say, Hey, you
know what? I know I'm a bucket getter.
I'm going to go out and get it.
And he did that all night last night on a very, very efficient, uh,
I think he finished off 11 of 17 from the field, 10 of 16 from the field,
27 points.
I think the lack of Owen Freeman and Ging his shot going early was just key for him.
Yep, 10 of 16, good stuff.

here as a sighting day has come and gone. Now, as I mentioned earlier, it is a completely
different world as it pertains to signing day in February. I mean, this was a thing
and for our younger viewers and listeners out there, this was the day that us nerds
absolutely loved.
You're waiting on pins and needles.
Who's going to sign?
Who's going to commit?
Is the fax going to come in?
Yeah, the fax machine was a big thing as it pertained to this one.
It's not the case anymore.
We have the early signing period now in December.
Most of these guys have made their decisions,
certainly the way that I Ira recruits early on.
But they did pick up one more commitment here
towards the end, and Jacob Wallace.
And I'm really excited about Jacob Wallace.
You start with the pedigree, the bloodlines,
family of athletes, his brother finish up his career
after starting UMass.
He went to Michigan.
He was on the national championship team
from two years ago, and now is playing in the NFL.
So you start right there.
Little bit undersized,
and I think that's where some of the tepidation came from him
in the recruiting circles,
but he was gaining some momentum here a little bit later on.
This is a Phil Parker special though.
Little bit undersized.
Didn't have the major offers, but they need cornerbacks.
And you wonder now with Jacob Wallace, his signing late in the game, the likelihood that
he's going to come in and be a day one starter for a guy that is not highly regarded in recruiting
circles doesn't seem real high, but we know that they need help at quarterback. Could
it be that they struck out? And we know that they did as it pertains to cornerback recruiting
during the early portal cycle. And they're likely going to be there again when the spring portal opens up but maybe that's something just to keep an eye on but Jacob Walbs
guided be excited about had D1 interest on the basketball floor and also here on the football field bunch of mid majors some bigger programs started to come in, but I would got involved them really like this one. Obviously the top of the class is Jose, Jose Epidessa,
Jose, another four star, AJ's little brother,
and we'll see if he can help right away.
I think a rotational piece would be something
and Iowa needs more guys that can get to the quarterback,
right?
Iowa needs a few more guys that you look at and say, they can get there, they can be the kind of, that's And Iowa needs more guys that can get to the quarterback, right? Iowa needs a few more guys that you look at and say they can get there. They can be the kind
of, that's what Iowa needs to generate a little bit more because they just didn't get enough
of a pass rush this past season. The other four stars in this class, a couple of tight
ends in Goucher and Cooney, and then Thomas Meyer. You know, when you look at the tight
end position, they're going to be good next year with Addison Estrenga coming back for
another year. There's guys that got their feet wet and we'll see which one of the young guys kind of step up
on next season. I think there's going to be an opportunity for that. But Thomas Meyer,
you look at him and you look at first the offers. I think that's something that definitely jumps out
with Thomas Meyer. When programs like Texas A&M are making their way to Clear Lake, Iowa, to take a
look at a guy in Miami and Stanford, when those kind of schools are involved, I think
it changes the perception of that one. I'm excited for Meyer. We'll see developmentally
where he is. He's got a good frame to him. He's got really good athleticism. You watch
him not just on the football field, but you watch some of his highlights of other sports and and he's an eye-opener. So really gonna be fun to
keep an eye on that one. It's a good recruiting class, it's different though. And this is kind of
the new path of trying to figure out what this is going to look like for Iowa going forward and kind
of how they build their roster, what they're going to do with it because you have the scholarship changes, the walk-on
program looks a whole lot different and kind of when you put all that together. Now Tyler Barnes,
he's got his work cut out for him figuring out the right path to do this. Iowa signing a smaller
recruiting class than normal because of those parameters that are in front of it. There were
some recruits last week also for the class of 2026. We'll talk
about those a little bit more. I will talk to either David Eichel, Tom Kaker, one of those guys
in the recruiting circle a little bit more about the class of 2026. A bunch of offensive linemen
committed in that class and some of those names and what they kind of mean and their pedigree.
I will talk about that going forward as well. We'll get football talk in here. Spring football,
we're still a ways away from spring football.
In fact, a little bit later start than normal.
I got this here in my notes from earlier
that this is going to be pushed back even more than what
we are used to.
Spring practice is not going to start until March 26.
There it is.
March 26 for spring football.
So this thing's going to be pushing deep into April.
That's OK. We're going to have a lot of basketball to talk about. It looks like a women's team back in the NCAA tournament. We got wrestling as the wrestlers take the mat again against Nebraska coming up this week and of course the run to nationals for them and the men's basketball program and the big picture questions that remain with that program. We'll talk more about the Wisconsin matchup coming up tomorrow and take a look at that one. We're with you each and
