We are off and running after the opening press conference from Benton McCollum, the buzz palpable, the excitement building, and Iowa basketball feels like it should have a chance of coming back in a big time way. That was about all you could hope for I think as an Iowa basketball fan. And a program that has certainly seen a lot of ups and downs. For me as a fan, I've talked about it a lot. Background, Ben McCollum same age. Him going back and talking about Chris Street as I'm
Starting point is 00:01:40 going through and rereading again Emotion in Motion, something that I do every couple of years, the Chris St. Brooke that Rick Brown put out. And for him to start there, talking about some of the players, but more than anything, talking about Chris St. It's a home run. There was so much good in this press conference. Now, ultimately, nobody knows if this is going to work.
Starting point is 00:02:08 You roll the dice, but you're rolling the dice with a guy that cares about the program. You're rolling the dice with a guy that has won everywhere that he's been, not only a couple of stops, but this is a guy that is respected in the coaching industry. I Always able to nab a guy that a lot of other programs programs at different levels Wanted to have
Starting point is 00:02:37 This is as good as it can get in this spot It doesn't mean that it's automatically going to work, but the good vibes coming out were outstanding. Starting with people showing up and for a press conference and you know have the students there putting on the gold ties, that was a nice touch and it's going to build. And if he wins and Ben McCullum puts together a solid roster right away in year number one and we see Carver being built back up. There's going to be a lot of those people in the white shirt and gold ties that are going to be having there. Going through a few notes from the press conference, Ben
Starting point is 00:03:16 McCollum, one thing that you can see is he's sure of himself. He's called cocky, called arrogant. He's a winner. And that kind of bravado is a good thing. He knows he's good. He knows he's a good coach. He doesn't need people telling him that. But he has that kind of confidence. And when you're going in the recruiting game, and when you're going up against the behemoth, that is the big 10, and when you're going to be staring down week after week, the Tom Isso's of the world, and you're going to be going up against Dusty May, and you're going to be facing off against great coaches, game in and game out, you have to have that too. He's not taking a water pistol to a gunfight, but I was behind in terms of finances. They'll be able to cut that.
Starting point is 00:04:07 One of my favorite moments of that confidence was he was just talking about kind of, it was almost a passing comment about Xs and Os, and he said, we'll be fine there. They will be. There's not going to be a team out there. There's not going to be a coach out there that's going to out scheme Ben McCollum. The scheme is not going to be an issue. He is going to put the Iowa Hawkeyes in the best position, game in a game out to win. He's going to do whatever's necessary. Want to get up and down? He'll do it. Need a team that shoots threes? They'll do that. He's going to take his players and put them in the best position. Another thing that I
Starting point is 00:04:47 absolutely loved is talking about going back and playing the hits and talking about the former players, but also talking about former coaches. Lou Olson and George Rabling, of course, Dr. Tom, and also bringing up Fran McCaffrey, because Fran is in that group. Fran deserves to be in that conversation, and he will be. And as we get more years past, I think we will look back at his tenure, hopefully in a different light for a lot of people, and the negativity that continued to seep in.
Starting point is 00:05:17 It was a time for a change, absolutely. You heard me saying that since January. It was time for a change, and it took me longer than others to get to that point. But we got there. And now we have a guy that can elevate this program. It's going to take work. It's going to take you.
Starting point is 00:05:35 That's another thing that Ben McCollum talked about. It's going to take all of us, not just the players, not just the coaches, everybody to make this happen, and not just in terms of the financials, but showing up, buying the tickets, supporting the program, getting Iowa basketball back. It was an embarrassment this year at Carver Hawkeye. It told the story of going to the last game against Michigan State. Great game till the end. And for me and my son to be able to get seats 12 rows up for 15 bucks with fees.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Come on. It's crazy, right? That's where we are. I hope I really do. I hope that I'm never able to find tickets that good for that cheap and Carver for a men's basketball game again. Because that means things are going well. Also love that he didn't bring up Licklider or Alford.
Starting point is 00:06:31 He's one of us. Ben McColum's one of us. Going through talking about the players and at the very beginning when he was talking about Chris Street, he said this, quote, it's vivid in my mind. And most of you have seen it. I grew up seeing it. And have you ever seen Chris St. Play? Like just with the intensity, the energy, the effort, the enthusiasm, the joy, the servant mentality, the toughness, everything that Iowa stands for is what our team
Starting point is 00:07:05 is going to look like. Yes. Yes. Preach. That's what we've been talking about. This is what we need to get the program back to. I loved what he was selling. I was eating it up. Called out a couple of former players, players with eligibility, hoping to get them back. And Cooper Koch and Price Sanford and Josh Dix. We'll see. Those guys are going to have opportunities and probably more than likely opportunities to make more money than they can here. You want to be a winner? You want to be part of the program that turns the corner? You can be that.
Starting point is 00:07:46 And getting Bennett Sturtz in, that's a game changer. He talked about Bennett Sturtz being, if not the best point guard in the country, or the best two or three. Transfer portal rankings, he's up there 24-7, had him number one. Evan Maya, an analytical website, had the number two guy in the portal after the kid from New Mexico. I mean, that's what we're talking about here. This is big time. Iowa has a chance. And for Koch, whose dad played here, that had his freshman season cut short because of injury, Price, who's done it the last two years and
Starting point is 00:08:26 has been there for big moments and knows what it can be like watching his older brother for Josh Dix, who's gone through it for three years. How cool would it be for those guys to also be part of the change? And you can love Freyhan, but do that. We didn't hear about Brock Harding who's down to his final three. And Owen Freeman, that's okay. Those guys, we know what Owen did. The decision that he made to have surgery and his running mate from his senior year of high school departed very quickly afterwards. Okay, it's gonna happen. Ben McCollum is selling a vision and hopefully that'll be some vision that not just those guys but many others are gonna follow. We don't know but he hit all the notes that certainly people my age needed to hear.
Starting point is 00:09:25 all the notes that certainly people my age needed to hear. He brought up going to Iowa basketball camp, as I did as a kid. And the Hawkeye Hustler Award was an award that I tried for every year because I wasn't winning anything else. Like, I wasn't getting MVP. Not at all. Most turnovers, maybe.
Starting point is 00:09:42 Ugliest shot, my shot was all right. Worst decision to take a shot? Oh yeah. When you're 11 years old and trying to hoist up a 24 footer, yeah probably not a great shot. But I wanted that award. I couldn't get it. Ben McCall got it. He bleeds black and gold. He knows what this program can be. And he's the guy, the best guy, the guy most suited to make it happen. So let's all support it. Let's all make it happen. You got a chance to make it happen because today is a day of giving. We'll talk about that a little bit later on. But coming up next, Scott Dockerman from the Athletic. His thoughts on the hiring of Ben McCollum we'll dive in deep with Scott Dockerman. He was also in attendance for Iowa football their pro day. We'll talk a little football and some hoops and Ben
Starting point is 00:10:36 McCollum. Joining us next Scott Dockerman from the Athletic. This is Locked On Hawkeyes. Scaling your business requires the expertise at the right time. Scott Dockerman writes for the Athletic Covers the Big Ten, Covers college football, the
Starting point is 00:13:24 NFL Draft, the Hawks, etc Etc and doc joins us doc Trenton can thanks for coming on here today Miss you yesterday, but certainly understand why you couldn't join us But there's a lot going on and we'll get to the football because I want to pick your brain It's a story that's kind of flown under the radar with everything else going on And normally is front and center, but let's say front and center and that's what Ben McCollum. Doc on the surface it seems like boy checks a lot of boxes I think there's a lot of Hawkeye fans that are absolutely on board with this maybe there was some disappointment in the beginning about about missing on
Starting point is 00:13:58 DeVries but boy oh boy that that disappointment has very quickly waned that's how I see it. How about you? Yeah, I think that's the right way to look at it if you're an Iowa fan that perhaps, and Darren DeVries is an excellent coach. He wouldn't be in Indiana if he wasn't. And being a native son, that's really helpful. However, Ben McCollum had a better year this year as a coach at Drake.
Starting point is 00:14:22 He's had just an absolute killer career at Division II. He's from the state of Iowa. As I think what was shared yesterday, you know, the picture of itself of Tom Davis, that really heals some things. That gets people energized. And I think the more and more you dig into his background and you start to see what he was able to accomplish, um, as a coach and, and the system that he employs and then what other people say about him. This is, um, you know, it may not just be a home run hire for Iowa. It's maybe a grand slam hire for Iowa. And we may, it may be a year or two before it.
Starting point is 00:14:58 I mean, he's not going to be great year one as compared to what could happen in year five or something like that if he gets his pieces in there. But I think that there's an opportunity there for Iowa not only to grow with the program and kind of get it back to being Iowa's team and the Hawkeye persuasion of Iowa's team, but then also kind of grow the interest around it to the point where it's kind of like the baton passing like in the past where went right from football to basketball season and everybody the interest remained the same It needs to get back to that and I think Ben McCollum's got a perfect opportunity to do that
Starting point is 00:15:37 Ben McCollum in that game against Missouri I know there are a lot of Hawkeye fans that were watching a lot of Hawkeye fans I talked to that are watching Drake for the first time that year How important was that to have that kind of performance for a lot of Hawkeye fans to see this is what it is Yes, look letter ball didn't work here, but this can be different. This can work at Iowa How important was that one single game in your mind? I? Don't think it really matters for I mean Iowa fans Iowa fans, there's a lot of negative Nellies there who criticize anything and everything. And I really, I'm so sick of them and I don't
Starting point is 00:16:10 even care what they think. And that's true. I mean, the people who say, Oh, it's another Lick lighter. You've never watched a game of basketball in your life. Go away. Because what Ben column has done is been tremendous. The pace that he plays with, the ability to move without the basketball that this team show, the ability to match up. I mean, forget Missouri, but the loss against Texas Tech, the disparity in talent could not have been greater. It was like Hickory versus South Bend Central in the end of Hoosiers. And yet to be competitive in that game
Starting point is 00:16:45 shows how well coached they are. And the people bringing up Licklider, it's ridiculous because Bo Ryan won four national titles at a division three school. Then went and had a cup of coffee in Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and then led the Badgers for 15 years as a Hall of Fame coach, went to the final four and the national championship game. He played a Hall of Fame coach, went to the Final Four and the National Championship game.
Starting point is 00:17:06 He played a slower tempo, but it was so efficient. And that's exactly what you need to look at with Ben McCollum. I mean, in Northwest Missouri State, they never averaged once he started winning, less than 73 points a game. And only once did they give up more than 65. For the last nine years,
Starting point is 00:17:23 they shot better than 50% from the field. What else are you asking for? Okay, he's not up more than 65. They, for the last nine years, they shot better than 50% from the field. What else are you asking for? Okay. He's not up tempo like Fran. These are the same people who complain because I can't defend. I mean, what, what do you want? And I'm sick to death of hearing this. I frankly am.
Starting point is 00:17:40 And I, if people can't get on board with, with McCollum, and I'm not saying be a real fan, I'm not in that ballpark. I'm just saying that if you're going to continue to complain, I just don't want to hear it. Because this has been, I was fan-based, a small minority, but it's been, I was fan-based for 15 plus years and I'm sick to death of it. Yep. You can't have it both ways, but you're 1000% right.
Starting point is 00:18:03 Doc, another aspect of this hiring, I think that maybe opened some eyes for people that didn't know Brian Hardin or know, you know, what he was about, how he ran the shop over at Drake. I think there's a lot of national people are now familiar with his game. And maybe some of the Iowa media that's not necessarily centered in Des Moines. I mean, that that five minute clip about the timeline yesterday, A, you never see, very seldom do you see athletic directors go that in detail. I think Brian Harden's star is shining brighter
Starting point is 00:18:33 after this whole process as well. And it was shining pretty bright to begin with, just knowing that the coaches that he's been able to put in place. Yeah, he's somewhat overshadowed being in the Missouri Valley Conference and not a football school. Yeah, they play you know, he's somewhat overshadowed being in the Missouri Valley Conference and not a football school. And yeah, they, they, they play the, you know, the pioneer league and it's not scholarship, but, uh, but I think when you start to look and at what Drake has
Starting point is 00:18:53 accomplished with their last three coaches, all were hired by big 10 schools in the last week. Um, and they're all successful. Uh, you know, Darren DeVries should have been in the NCAA tournament. Of course, you look at Colorado State and Drake both won NCAA tournament games this year. All three are outstanding coaches. And he presided over all of them. I think those are the things that you've got to look at if you're evaluating an athletic director, because that's what you're foremost centered on is how do you, who do you hire and how good are they?
Starting point is 00:19:28 Because you can raise all the money you want, you can build all the facilities you want, but if you don't have a coach that wins games, people aren't going to take you seriously. And I think some people have. And then I think the way he articulated that was, was well done. Most athletic directors are not transparent and explain things in that detail in the public's eye. Maybe they do around the corner or something, but not usually like that.
Starting point is 00:19:53 And I think it was very helpful. And in his case, he's, yeah, if he's not on a list for somebody at a, I don't know about a power five school, but certainly a major conference type school or a group of five or something like that, he should be. Or if you also look at it another way is, Drake has the opportunity to build off this and become an elite institution in its own right.
Starting point is 00:20:21 I always kind of wondered when Creighton left the valley that maybe Drake can fill that vacuum is kind of is the private school that's from a metro area, but it's not really a pro town and it has an opportunity to kind of build its brand that way. And I think they have, and I think they continue to do that. And if you can make that the jewel of the valley, it's got a chance to really take off and and he can make that the jewel of the valley, it's got a chance to really take off and uh, and he can lead that charge I I think he's a he's a very accomplished athletic director and a terrific one at that And uh gonna be maybe some people calling that
Starting point is 00:20:54 Three coaches in a row that are now in the big 10 I think that's gonna go a long way and maybe some bigger school is gonna be maybe Hitting on the door there a brian hardin on the Hawkeye front doc. We've talked about this in the past I've heard you mentioned I think it it bears another conversation now that McCollum's in place kind of the repairing of Iowa basketball getting out grassroots campaign of getting people excited once again now that they have their guy is the primetime league coming back Probably not, you know rules of change They probably have to be an inhale component for for guys to actually play in it anymore. But what still can be done now?
Starting point is 00:21:27 Now that you see the guy here, what would be kind of your blueprint of restoring this fan base and getting people excited again for men's basketball? You know, I think there's some interesting ideas that I would have, you know, for Iowa. And one is, when he starts to talk about the summer, that it's,
Starting point is 00:21:45 there's a vast opportunity there, a vast hole that you can go say, do a semi barnstorming tour of the state, maybe take, you know, go to West Des Moines or go to Ankeny or go to Cedar Rapids and other places like that with your team and make it an NIL opportunity. All the money goes to the swarm or all the money goes straight to the basketball program for NIL or something like that. And if you have a workout and you have kind of a, you know, much of speeches and stuff like that,
Starting point is 00:22:17 and door prizes, I think that's a way to get people to put it back in the public's eye. And that's always been a problem for this program, um, you know, particularly in the last, you know, 10 plus years, but it hasn't been in the public's eyes for most of the year. I mean, football overshadows everything and it continues and it will, you know, um, in the spring, you know, the women's programs would really good. And then in the winter, um, I was been good, but not really, there's
Starting point is 00:22:43 the interest has been waning. And I think if you can do that, if you can, whether it's tour the state, hit a picnic, you know, and say, let's meet the team at, you know, Veterans Stadium in Cedar Rapids, Memorial Stadium where the Colonel's play or something like that, and have Ben McCall drop the first pitch of the game. Maybe do the same thing at the iCubs and bring the players there and do autographs and just start there. And then also, Fran never really did anything like podcasts or radio shows or TV spots and stuff like that. I mean, those are easy opportunities, especially once the recruiting season ends for Ben McCall to get to become known
Starting point is 00:23:25 and discuss his philosophy, whether it's on your show or somebody else's or a podcast. Those are the things I think they could do that's relatively easy. And then the other thing we've talked about it for years about refeeding Carver. I think this year after seeing 2800 people there for Minnesota, it makes sense now to just, all right, we're just going to implode it, the students are going to go down on the floor. And if there's a, you know, and encourage the students to go there that we're making this for you, we want this to be a great atmosphere and announce it fairly soon. And then and reseat the whole thing because not enough fans cared enough to either show up or buy tickets for them to justify
Starting point is 00:24:04 hanging onto their seats wherever it is in Carver. I think you got to do that as well. Doc, a couple of minutes left. Let's spend it on football trends. You're good with basketball. You were there pro day yesterday. I guess what I want to start with you is the one guy that I thought should have been on the list of attendees in Indianapolis at the combine. That's Nick Jackson, who tackled everybody. The numbers he put up are unbelievable. So was Higgins, but so Nick Jackson was not invited. Did he work out yesterday? What did you see, I guess, Doc, when you were there?
Starting point is 00:24:34 Yeah, I talked to him for a while. He did work out. He had a lot of, I think his numbers were 465, I want to say, around the 40 end. I can't remember exactly what he said he benched, but I did talk to him quite a bit. And again, when you get to the combine and I had 329 players there, that a lot of them are there, you know, you got to be recommended by 18 teams. And if you're not, then you don't get to go. And like Mason Richmond had 16 teams right now, and I'm not sure about Nick, but Nick's going to put himself in a position to where if he's not drafted, he's definitely going to be a free agent signing and he's going to be signed within minutes of the draft. And he's going to go to camp and have a really outstanding opportunity.
Starting point is 00:25:19 And he's a heck of a guy. And I expect him to have a good chance at not making the team, making a practice team. And if not, well, he's got a nice degree from the University of Virginia in commerce. So I think he'll be successful in whatever he does. But I think him and Mason Richmond were the two that I thought really
Starting point is 00:25:39 could have had a good chance to go to Indianapolis. And I still think both have a chance to be drafted and stick with the roster. Good stuff. That's Scott Dockerman from The Athletic joining us here chance to go to Indianapolis and I still I think both have a chance to be drafted and stick with the roster. Good stuff. That's Scott Dockerman from the Athletic joining us here as we continue Lockdown Hawkeyes back into the transfer portal. What does Iowa need to be shopping for?

It's that picture we've talked about last couple of days of Ben McCollum on YouTube. I gotta put this up. It's that picture we've talked about last couple of days of Ben McCollum with Dr. Tom Davis. Just absolutely amazing. And connecting the past. We talked about Dr. Tom. What a figure he was. The beloved figure. That he was. The unceremonious way that it ended for him. His contract not being renewed. Having that lame duck season that ended in, I was last sweet 16 appearance.
Starting point is 00:28:26 And you're just hoping for that full circle moment. But you need dudes to do it. And that's where we go to the transfer portal. It's still incredibly early to get a deep read of what direction this is going to go. Obviously, Sturz is at the forefront. We're going to talk a little bit more about him in the next couple of days and what kind of player that they're getting
Starting point is 00:28:44 because he is tremendous. If you didn't have an opportunity to watch him play this season he controls the game at such an incredible pace. This is not a try hard kid. He's 6'4". He has athleticism. This is not a kid that you think about that was barely recruited at the D2 level. This dude's got physicality, size, strength, stud. Absolute stud. We'll talk more about him. We got to figure out the other part. Josh Dix, Price Sanford, Cooper Koch, those three guys.
Starting point is 00:29:24 What about the other guys that we really haven't heard anything at all about? Say, New Traore, Chris Taggio, those guys. Isaiah Johnson, who came in from Miami mid-year. There's still a lot of the guys that were committed, now have decommitted from the high school ranks. So, there's a ton that they still need to figure out and work out. And O'Connor Enright is a guy, he played for Drake a couple of years ago under DeVries, was good friends with Tucker, and a lot of people thought he was going to end up in West Virginia when DeVries went out there a season ago. He didn't because they got Javon Small, one of the best guards in the portal, who was a stud for them this past season. So Enright went to DePaul, he was having a nice season. Not a huge score, good passer.
Starting point is 00:30:07 But he's got visits apparently set up with both Iowa and Indiana. I saw that I think first with Elliott Clough over at rivals. But that'll be one to keep track of. Inside track though for Indiana definitely. But I think Iowa, I think it was that maybe they're going to get a visit earlier regardless we'll see on that front there's going to be so many names so many different directions they go how many guys from Drake is he going to bring along you know how many how many guys does he believe that can play at this level we know that starts is coming it's great start. Mike Mahon, the former SID at Drake University. He had the news just yesterday. Isaiah Howard also going to come with Sturtz. So those two guys are your building blocks, a starting piece, if you will. A lot still to be sorted out. We'll work to sort them out. That's what is the beauty of being with you each and every day talking Hawkeyes is. We'll be back tomorrow. Home run, absolutely nailed it. Tip of the ball cap, Ben McCollum.
Starting point is 00:31:10 Now let's go get some dudes and get ready to rebuild Iowa basketball. We'll talk to you again tomorrow. Thanks for making Lockdown Hawkeyes your first listen every day.
