Starting point is 00:01:05 an all-timer for the Iowa men's basketball program that would on do a great MBA career, then a great coaching career afterwards. things change a little bit towards the end of his life a few stories on that as we say goodbye to Don Nelson. So big football storylines are starting to emerge and we're going to get our first glimpses of things coming up later this week. On Friday, it'll be Iowa Football Media Day. Then on Saturday it's the open practice with Kids Day. We'll talk about some of those storylines coming up here throughout this one.

Starting point is 00:01:32 We'll also be joined by Elliott Clough from hawkeye insider.com. We'll get Elliott's thoughts on both the football team as they get ready for the start of the season. Also going to talk some men's basketball as well with Elliot and a couple of things and a couple of players he anticipate that's going to be able to take a step forward for the Hawkeyes this year. But we begin today with a quick run through what turned out to be nine guys, nine position groups, important young guys that I want to be watching on Saturday over at Kids Day. These are the ones that, yes, we've talked about the stars. We've talked about who's going to be the quarterback. What kind of emergence are we going to see out a guy like Yosea Pinesse. How good is Cam Buffington going to be?

Starting point is 00:02:09 The star, Zach Lutmer and DJ Votomay and on and on and on how good all these different players can be this season, the offensive line with Cade Piper and with Trevor Lough. Yes, we've had those storylines and those conversations. This is that next layer. These guys that I feel like I have a good feeling about the guys that I think have upside and I think guys that are going to eventually help the Hawkeyes. But for the most part, these are young guys. And I just want to get eyes on them on Saturday to see if that's matching up with what. I think is going to be. Let's just go position by position and start at the quarterback spot.

Starting point is 00:02:42 And yes, we're going to be watching a ton of Hank Brown versus Jeremy Hecklinski. We are going to overreact to what we see on that front also as we are going to dissect every single throw, every single rep that both these guys make. It is going to be under the microscope. And we get that. But I also want to take a look at Bessinger, who comes in, obviously, out of the high school ranks. Nobody is thinking he's going to be a player that's going to be pushing to be a starter here right

Starting point is 00:03:06 away or anything like that. That's an unrealistic goal, a guy that didn't even go through spring practice. But hearing Tim Lester talk about him a couple of times, talking about the armed talent that he has, a few people have relayed to me. They believe the Bessinger is the most talented guy in the quarterback room. That doesn't mean he's the best right now. Don't take it as that. But when you're talking about raw ability, the ability to make all the throws coupled with

Starting point is 00:03:31 athleticism, that's what I've heard. I got to see it and I want to see it. And that's why he's number one on this list at the quarterback spot and trading Bessinger. Let's go over to running back. Yes, we know about the top tier guys. Kamari Moulton, sure. I think we want to get a look at L.J. Phillips and see that transition from South Dakota. Can he, at minimum, be the backup there, what he's going to do?

Starting point is 00:03:51 We've seen Xavier Williams. We've seen Nathan McNeill. We've seen all these guys. For me, it is Brevindal. And after an injury plague first two seasons on campus, if he can, A, stay healthy. But secondly, with that elite speed that he has, can he carve out a roll? And it might not be at running back. It could be something special teams as a return man, things like that.

Starting point is 00:04:13 But we know the skill set definitely is there. It's about health. And it's going to be about opportunity. And that's why I want to see a little bit more at the running back spot from Brevindal. Let's jump over to the offense. And yes, you all know if you're in every day or that, yes, I love Tony Diaz. And I think he's going to pop this year. Reese van der Z, another guy.

Starting point is 00:04:31 It's about health for him. think Dayton Howard, we know what he is. Could there be another level up he can take? Sure, but a big, solid-bodied wide receiver. You got that. For me, it's about Evan James. Because of the hype that happened with Tony Diaz coming in this year, turning down Alabama to make his way to Iowa City,

Starting point is 00:04:49 that I know got the juices flowing for a lot of people. But Evan James was also a very coveted wide receiver coming out of the portal, and I think they got a good one there. Diaz might be better right now. He's kind of built differently. It feels like that. But that's not to mean that Evan James is a slouch. And we can definitely see an emergence of two guys.

Starting point is 00:05:08 It doesn't have just be one. Yes, we would at wide receiver definitely take two guys there. I'd want to get a little bit more look at Evan James. Over at tight end, yes, Addison Estranga. I want to see what he looks like coming off the Achilles injury. Another year, DeJ Vonami, what he's going to look like at tight end and just how good he can be. But for me, it's Thomas Meyer, a guy that played a lot last year as a true freshman. And certainly has the recruiting profile of a guy you think it's going to be good.

Starting point is 00:05:35 A Clear Lake kid that had offers from Miami and Texas A&M when they're sniffing around up in Clear Lake. You know you've got to be a talented, talented, talented kid. That was definitely a case with Thomas Meyer. But because you have so many veterans, Zach Orteworks is still there. You still got Michael Burke. Is Thomas Meyer just almost in a way too good to keep off the field? And maybe the battle with him and Addis in Estringa to be that second tight end coming up this season. And on offensive line, we talk about Peeper, and yes, we talk about Loughke and those guys feel really good about Layton Jones and what they're going to be.

Starting point is 00:06:05 You know, a guy maybe we haven't talked about enough is Lucas Allgaier, who continues to push for playing time in the interior of the offensive line right now at a guard spot. And very likely is going to be a starter next season at one of the tackle positions. Jack Dotsler will exhaust his eligibility after this season. And though Trevor Lough would still have his fifth year, it feels like Trevor Lout is going to be off to the NFL after the. this season. And what people are pointing to is, yes, Lucas Allgaier is going to be a guy, get his feet wet here, learn at the guard position. Maybe it's a rotational piece. We've seen Iowa football do this a lot throughout the years. And then from there, he becomes a starter next season on the offensive line. Jumping over to the defense here, players, I'm looking to keep an eye on on Saturday

Starting point is 00:06:47 at Kids Day. Let's go first to defensive end at Joseph Anderson. NFL bloodlines with his dad, a very wiry, tall frame. I think of some of those long-armed guys in the past. We're able to get their arms up and knock down passes. Think of Chauncey Golson. That one definitely jumps out. And there's been a bunch of those guys throughout the years. I think this is another one here with Joseph Anderson.

Starting point is 00:07:09 And now he's built differently than what we're used to defensive end wise, that angular kind of range of him. I just want to see what he looks like out there on the field. Another young defense alignment, let's go inside the defensive tackle. We talked about maybe the biggest question mark for this Iowa football. football team and it's Devin Kennedy. Devin Kennedy, a player that, again, just like Joseph Anderson, dad, NFL player, Jimmy Kennedy was an absolute stud.

Starting point is 00:07:32 And though he is not nearly as big as Pops got to both at Penn State in the NFL, Devin Kennedy, because of the importance of this position, they need somebody to pop at defensive tackle this year and it would help if it was one of those young guys that could learn on the role but also play at a high level. And I think Devin Kennedy has that kind of upside. over to linebacker and a guy that I want to watch. And that is Preston Reese. Preston Reese, who a year ago at this time, Bruce Feldman over at the athletic,

Starting point is 00:08:00 as he does each and every year, comes out with his freaks list. And seemingly every single season, there's also a hawk eye that is listed on that. And last year it was Preston Reese, a guy that we knew he was part of the three-headed monster that came in at linebacker with the three Eastern Iowa guys, that triangle that constituted what, I don't know, a couple under square miles and all these guys right around Iowa. city that were committed to the Hawkeyes and eventually now on the Hawkeye program. Reese, he is a wild man in special teams.

Starting point is 00:08:28 We've seen that already. But could he push? And as we know, Cam Buffington's going to be the guy at middle linebacker this year, meeting that Jade Montgomery gets pushed out. Could this be a case, though, that Preston Reese has an opportunity to take over as a starter? Somebody mentioned it this way, talking about Kevin Worthy, when he lost his job. Chan Greenway coming back healthy after an ACL. And if it's a direction that maybe that happens, we can see that.

Starting point is 00:08:53 But interesting thought, at the very least, I want to keep an eye on Preston Reese. And then my final one for you is Darian Jones, a freshman coming in from Omaha, older brother, one of his older brothers in Iowa. The older other brother was at Nebraska. It was down to those two schools. He made the right choice and chose to be a Hawkeye, but continued here really good things at him. A very long, angular athlete, 6'2 at the cornerback spot. And if you're looking for a true freshman, that could push for some playing time this year,

Starting point is 00:09:21 I think Jones very well could be that guy. There it is to run. Nine through, run through, excuse me, nine different players to keep an eye on Saturday. Some of the younger names to watch on Saturday, outside of the stars,

Starting point is 00:09:32 we'll be keeping an eye on. Coming back on the other side, we'll be joined by Elliott Clough. Starting point is 00:11:42 Elliot, hope you had a good weekend. How you doing? I'm good, Trent. Hanging in there. Still kind of in the dog day. Waiting for some intel out of fall camp, but we're making it work. I completely understand that.

Starting point is 00:11:56 Yeah, definitely is the case. And it's going to be a busy couple of days. Friday we got media day coming up this week that's always a long day and then on Saturday our only glimpse of this football team when we get the kids day scrimmage open practice whatever phrasing or or terminology that you want to use we know some of the big picture items you know that we're going to be looking for Elliott things that we've talked about a ton obviously quarterback the depth of defensive line what else are you looking forward to both Friday and Saturday

Starting point is 00:12:27 hopefully learning a little bit more outside of the things it feels like we've been talking about ad nauseum since back when spring practice began. Yeah, you know, I think in that same vein, guard position, that's where Cade Peeper is going to line up because that is going to have a massive. So that's got to be up there. Who's maybe taken the leap or taking the most reps that the Leo spot is going to be big between Lannin Van Tickricks, Preston, Reese, and Derek Weiskopf. And then where Zach Lutmer's lined up, is he going to be at free take here? has Anthony Hawkins taking a lot of those reps.

Starting point is 00:13:06 Cornerback, too, who's behind Deshaun Lee, is Jalen Lutton, is it Rashad Godfrey? Is it Jacob Wallace? Or is Jacob Wallace at the cash? Because Zach Luffer is at the free. Let's see, tight end. Like, how much is Addison Ostranga like himself as he once was? Is he going to be tight end two behind DJ Venami

Starting point is 00:13:25 or has Thomas Meyer ascended and taking those reps? Wide receiver, three through six, seems to be a big question mark, unless you count Dayton Howard as wide receiver three. So there's a, of course, there's those main storyline, right, that we've talked about a ton. But man, there's, with so many players that graduated, so many players that left for the NFL, there are still a ton of question marks with this team, not just the headlines, right? Not just wide receiver, excuse me, not just quarterback, not just defensive line. So normally, Elliot, you're usually getting a little bit of buzz at this time.

Starting point is 00:13:58 There's starting to be a few things, even though we're not even a full weekend, practice that things are starting to trickle out a little bit more. We're hearing a little bit about this squad. What can you tell us about what you've heard, anything, any names, any storylines that have jumped up here in the first, what, four practices of the year? Yeah, well, like you mentioned, first four practices had started, I believe it was Friday or Saturday, so still pretty early, but, you know, one thing that I have heard a little bit is about actually the freshman class. Sounds like Billy Wivoda is going to be a name to watch, especially on special teams. Not too often you get to hear a name like that.

Starting point is 00:14:38 Billy Wayvota as a linebacker. Not often you get a hear a name about linebackers as freshman in general. Maybe when it was that 24 class with Kim Buffington and Preston Reese and Derek Weissop. But Wayvota is another name. You know, we can't count out guys like Darian Jones, Marcello V.C. I think those are the two names that are most likely to play. at least in the beginning of the year. But Wayvota might be up there, man.

Starting point is 00:15:05 I mean, he played in one of the most competitive leagues in the country in Georgia. Michigan tried to flip him late in the cycle. And that's the guy who's an athlete, really smooth, really twitchy, really good on special teams in high school, too, blocked a few punts. So definitely a name to keep tabs on. Speaking of names, maybe we should keep closer eye on. I want to go to Evan James. We've talked so much about Tony Deacon.

Starting point is 00:15:31 And here comes this other transfer comes in from the FCS ranks because of Diaz, the hype, a guy that said no to Alabama at an opportunity to go take a visit there to make his way to Iowa City. I think that led to the excitement. What can you tell us about Evan James, A, kind of how he fits into this wide receiver group and where you think he's going to be and how big of an impact he can use after the excitement of Tony Diaz? Yeah, I think, I think ideally you're going to fit him into sort of that Caden region role, a slot. receiver that can maybe do some things on special teams. I don't know that I would count him as a guy that's going to be doing a lot on special

Starting point is 00:16:08 teams this year, but more of a gadget guy that can run the ball here and there that can catch a screen pass and make some things happen in the open field. But then again, you could probably, you know, potentially put Tony Diaz into that position based on what we've heard about him and what he can do on the football field, not just go up and get a receiver, but a guy can make plays in space. So, but, but looking at Evan James, he is more of that place in space, type of slot receiver. And, of course, in this offense and what you hear from from receivers all the time is, yeah, I've been playing everywhere. Well, you start to be a trend, new games in season as to where guys line up and what kind of role they fill.

Starting point is 00:16:48 And I think Evan James is sort of that speed guy and make dudes miss in space that can also run the ball, maybe do an end around here and there. So he would look to me as more of that typical gadget guy that can do a few different things with the ball in his hand. We've talked a ton about defensive tackle. I think we both, everybody knows it listens to us, reads us. They definitely know our thoughts at that position. Have you heard anything, though, about up front what you anticipate it's going to look like, what they've been doing? I would have guessed that they've been going through a lot of guys in camp here and seeing what kind of sticks at defensive tackle. Yeah, no, I haven't heard of Pete.

Starting point is 00:17:26 But I would, what I will say, and of course, we'll get more of that as the week progresses into fall camp and then after kids' day. But what I would imagine right now, like you said, is that they're really rolling through a ton of different guys, a ton of different names to see who that fits in that position for not just starting, but for the rotation. Man, you know, I wrote an article this weekend about players that need to step up in fall camp. And one guy that I am really starting to talk about quite a bit, and not necessarily based on a ton of intel, but some stuff in the off season based on a bull prep as well as Devin Kennedy. I mean, of course, you've got your returning guy to our walk-ons in Luke Gaffney

Starting point is 00:18:12 and Will Hubert, who have played. Some snaps throughout their career proved to be playable, but you're not getting the high-end type of play that you want from your defensive tackles and walk-on just because they're physically. limited. And then you look at like Emmanuel Olaude, Brite Stevenson, those guys who transferred in this offseason. And they might just not be quite ready to fill the role that they need to fill in this Iowa two gaff system on the defensive line because it is unique.

Starting point is 00:18:39 You're not able to just tee off, right? And that's something I've said about the defense events as well. But Devin Kennedy's been under Kelvin Dell now entering into his third season with this team. He's smart. He's mature beyond his years. He has those physical tools. He's the son of Jimmy Kennedy's first round NFL draft pick, former Big Ten defensive player of the year. I think it's time for a guy like Devin Kennedy just start putting some things together and potentially start next to Bright Hawthorne. Maybe not at the beginning of the year, but partway through the year. He and Brad Fitzgibbon are two young guys that I've heard about quite a bit between the end of the season and through

Starting point is 00:19:15 the spring. And I think if there's anybody that should step up that needs to step up in this group, it is Devin Kennedy. So one interesting name I hadn't thought about in a while, and I was over at Hawkeye Insider reading through. Sean put together a list of a bunch of second year guys that have opportunities to take a stubborn. I completely forgot about Cody Haddon, who came in from Ohio State last year.

Starting point is 00:19:38 A safety prospect, obviously he had a Buckeye scholarship. You know he's got to have some kind of talent in there overall, but we have also been burned by some former Buckeyes in the past, too, on top of it. Do you know much about him? And is there a possibility? Is it just as simple as working maybe special teams this year? When you get a guy from Ohio State, it always kind of gets those wheels turn in a little bit. Yeah, he was actually injured in his junior year of high school football.

Starting point is 00:20:05 I don't know if he played a senior year. I've never been able to find any stats. So it was kind of unique. He enrolled early at Ohio State. But yeah, like you said, anytime there's a talent like that, that catches the eye of fans. of folks like you and me. And, you know, I think Iowa, if they really felt like they couldn't go to a guy at that, at that type of, or with that type of pedigree, rather, they wouldn't have gone

Starting point is 00:20:31 after Haddad. And I say they did because it's a different situation than a Caleb Brown. You're not expecting him to come in and play right away. He is a first year guy, a guy that didn't play a down at Ohio State. Now, I think he's probably a long-term play. But because of the fact that he did come over, because the talent is obviously there, I would say, like you said, special teams. That's where we're probably going to see him this year if he does see the field. Otherwise, you know, you've got multiple years of eligibility left for Tyler Brown, Anthony Hawkins, and even guys.

Starting point is 00:21:06 I mean, like, Zach Lutmer has two years of eligibility left. Do I think he uses them all? We'll see. But that safety position went from who's going to play there to now they're, they got a bunch of guys, they got a bunch of names that they'll have to sit through. and determine who's ready, who's not. So I don't think Haddad necessarily will see the field on defense at ton this year. But yeah, that's a place, special teams is a place where some of those physical traits can come through because you just don't have to do as much, right, on special teams,

Starting point is 00:21:34 especially if you're a gunner, just get by the first guy and go, right? Make the tackle. So I think that's where you're most likely to see a guy like Cody, Adda. It doesn't feel like we've talked a ton of basketball here recently, football. as you anticipate kind of starts to take over and then we'll hear some things see some things but before the season begins definitely football takes over towards the forefront as we wrap up i guess the summer time for the iowa men's basketball program elliott you know anything stand out to you anything change a guy maybe your opinions changed on anything like that because another one that

Starting point is 00:22:10 you know we talk so much during this off season and during the summertime it feels like we kind to hit anybody anything though evolved for you i guess during the summertime in your thought process? I think, I think, and it might be negative. So apologies to folks listening. But I probably, I'm a little skeptical of Tyree Coleman, honestly, not because of who he is. Because, you know, here in, and speak impressors and stuff like that, top of the line, gonna fit in.

Starting point is 00:22:41 He's got a lot of years left, right? He's got a few years left with eligibility. I think this is more of a long-term play where the upper- upside is there, but I don't know how much he's going to be able to contribute at a super high level this year. Just a little tight, a little tight on defense in terms of his fluidity. The ability to go into traffic and score isn't quite to the degree that I thought it would be. Got to work on the handle a little bit. Got to prevent the turnover.

Starting point is 00:23:12 So I guess I'm intrigued as to how I will find balance with kale comes at the one and how much taste plays on the ball. And that was going to be interesting before, but now I'm a little bit more intrigued about it. And I'm not saying I don't think Tyrus Coleman's going to play this year or that he's going to play minimal minutes. I think he's going to play. I think he's going to play a decent amount. But how impactful can he be in year one as opposed to year two, three, four in Iowa

Starting point is 00:23:40 city with this team? I think it's going to be more of a developmental thing that he gradually gets better as he spends time at this level and under Ben McCollum. I think though Kale Combs is very much going to be the least guard going into the season anyway. And, you know, I can be wrong. We haven't seen a ton of Coleman or of this team necessarily. But based on what we did see, you know, I wouldn't be surprised if we see Tate Sage on the ball more than maybe we expect it.

Starting point is 00:24:13 I definitely can envision that. Yeah, they need another facilitator. playmaker and we saw glimpses that certainly out of Tate sage in the beginning of his career last year as a freshman. One more on that front. And we've heard some talking about maybe toying around with some big lineups playing Trevon-Yarok out there with Andrew McKeever or having Man Yao out there with McKeever doing those kind of things. Do you think that's going to be something they're going to test out? And do you think it can work? Work throughout the course of the season, not for every minute a game, but for stretches every time going with a big, big lineup.

Starting point is 00:24:48 That would have been a good one for me to bring up instead of going negative. Well, that's a great point, Trent. I really am intrigued in particular with Trevin Yorock and Andrew McKeever on the field. Yeah, I'm definitely in football mode. Right. On the court at the same time because of Trevin's ability to shoot. Can Cam take that leaf in terms of his ability to shoot from the outside? because we did not see that at all last season.

Starting point is 00:25:14 He's got the athleticism to compliment what McKeever does. McKeever is not the best athlete in the world just because he's enormous. But they both have different traits and skill sets in Yorox and in KAMManyahu that can complement what McKeever does. Now, it's a little bit different with potentially playing Urock and Maniow on the court at the same time together because Urock has the size, but he's not quite there yet to be a rimper sector in terms of his athleticism, speed, those sorts of things. Whereas Maniow has the physicality and he's close to the size, but not quite the size

Starting point is 00:25:54 and the athleticism to play the center position. So how do you play those two together if that comes together? And then with Maniow and McKeever and Irock, can one of them defend a guard? Can one of them defend on the perimeter? that's where it gets a little iffy for me. You have to play a bigger lineup overall, if that's the case, to compensate for maybe the lack of athleticism

Starting point is 00:26:19 in your front court in that situation. I hope they test it out because it's really intriguing. It's really interesting to go from a team that didn't have enough size to now potentially having so much size. You can play two guys together. That is one of the more interesting things to me going into this. season your possibility to pass the ball is really interesting too how much does that change things up and of course McKeever you can say the same thing particularly in the short role so lots of

Starting point is 00:26:49 intriguing storylines to follow with this team going into the season how do they mesh who starts who's the leading score but that might be the top thing for me to follow personally is how much do they integrate these two big lineups Elliot club joining us hawkeye insider dot com Elliott out of time for today thanks for joining us so much and we'll talk again soon Sounds good. Starting point is 00:29:50 But wrapping things up with the passing of an all-time great, Don Nelson passes away at the age of 86. Hawkeye player from 1959 to 1962 led the Hawkeyes to 45 victories throughout his career, including a third-team All-American and two-time All-Big Ten honors throughout the course of his career. Average 21.2 of points for game during his career. Also moved on, of course, to the NBA, where he won a number of titles with the Boston Celtics, 1966, 68, 69, 74, and 76 was also named one of the 10 best

Starting point is 00:30:26 coaches in NBA history back in the 1990s and won the only coach with a thousand plus career victories and multiple NBA championships as a player where he won those five titles, as mentioned with the Celtics. Listening to people talk about him, innovative, thoughtful, a guy that definitely loved the game and wanted to continue to learn the game, even as he got older in his career, adaptability. And that's the thing that I'll remember for him, not as a player, but as a coach,

Starting point is 00:30:54 is adapting, changing on the fly, playing to the strength, something I've always loved to see out of coaches. And Don Nelson definitely had that.
