Starting point is 00:00:00 bonus episode of locked on Jayhawks. Not really going to be fun for this content, but it is very important. Our Terry O'Morris has been suspended from the program. We're going to discuss why go over some of the details from the Kansas city star article on this edition of locked on Jayhawks. You are locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks,
Starting point is 00:00:21 part of the locked on podcast network, your team every day. Well, this is not going to be a fun episode. I'm Derek Johnson. You can find me as well, Rock Chalk Sports Talk, Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. on KLWN in Lawrence. You can also catch us with Locked On Jayhawks anywhere your podcasts are on YouTube. Our Terry Amores story comes out earlier today from the Kansas City Star has been suspended from the basketball program.
Starting point is 00:00:55 We're going to talk about this. We're going to summarize some of the stuff. We're going to get into some excerpts from the story and kind of overall thoughts, I guess, and summarize. I don't know where we go with this. This is kind of an off-the-cuff type of thing. Let me just say this disclaimer right off the bat. Please, please, please read the actual article in the Kansas City Star at KansasCity.com. They did excellent work.
Starting point is 00:01:20 Shreyas Lada did excellent work. Again, Kansas City Star, KansasCity.com. Please read it don't just read the headline that's where you get in trouble with these things don't just read the headline read the whole story please do that um i'll say this i've had some people reach out to me i have obviously been somebody who has been hard on ku and arterio morris and this whole thing about uh this happening i didn't think this was something that should happen i am not taking this as a win i am not taking this as a victory lap. So I've had some people reach out being like, I'm sorry,
Starting point is 00:01:48 you were right. Or I've had some people reach out and be like, yeah, it looks like you have, you know, more, I don't know, firepower after what you said before. I'm not taking this as a victory. This sucks. This sucks that you have somebody, some girl who hypothetically, if that's what this is about or the situation that this is in, it's a very bad, unfortunate situation that I would wish upon nobody, not a single soul. And so I don't care if I was right from the beginning. That's not what this is about. It sucks.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Hopefully everyone's okay. And Artario Morris should never play basketball for KU. To summarize what kind of went on here, I am going to read this part verbatim from the Kansas City Star. Again, please read the article yourself. I'm not going to go over everything, and I shouldn't because you should provide that to the Star. But I think the beginning here is pretty prevalent to get to, and I don't want to, I guess, misspeak on anything.
Starting point is 00:02:39 Kansas men's basketball guard Artaria Morris has been suspended from the KU program following a rape accusation that was reported to the university of kansas police department morris is not named in the incident report but a ku athletics official told the star he quote has been suspended end quote from the program and we have no further comment a second source confirmed an allegation had been made against morris um now you might saying, okay, but they didn't confirm, you know, it was him. Well, why else would he be suspended? And as we're going to go through some other stuff here, a lot of no comments on Morris. If it wasn't him, wouldn't someone say it wasn't
Starting point is 00:03:14 him as opposed to saying no comment. Obviously this comes after he had just settled his case where he had a, I think it got written down to, I forget if class C is the lowest one or class A, whichever one it was, it was the lowest one and a small fine was given, but that was figured out due to his, I guess, alleged sexual assault that happened a couple of years ago from before. So now this comes out now. I want to get into some excerpts though here. First, we have to take a quick time out. This episode is brought to you by LinkedIn Jobs. Starting point is 00:04:26 So some interesting story excerpts as part of all this. The report was from the 1700 block of Naismith Drive in late August, which was confirmed on the report as McCarthy Hall. Johnny Furphy, El Marco Jackson were listed as witnesses. Nick Timberlake was listed in the other category. This is a direct part that I'm pulling from the KC star. A source with knowledge of the situation said the men's basketball players listed as witnesses or other on the incident report were interviewed after the
Starting point is 00:04:55 fact and not involved in the incident at all. They are not under investigation or anything like that remotely. So you might see in the story, you know, Johnny Furfield, Marco Jackson, what does that mean? No, they were just witnesses. They were just telling what happened in the story. They are totally clear in all this. Morris's agent, Morris's mentor, Artario Morris himself, Bill Self, Travis Goff, they were all reached out to by the Kansas City Star, all gave no comments.
Starting point is 00:05:20 Also from the Kansas City Star, on Tuesday, September 12th, more than two weeks after the alleged incident occurred, a listing for the alleged rape was uploaded to an online crime report database. The Star made multiple requests for the incident report from KU police on Tuesday before filing Kansas Open Records Act request, which was fulfilled by KU on Friday. I think you have like three days to fulfill that request. For what it's worth, by the way, KU fulfilled the request on Friday. This is not KU being like, oh, yeah, this is wrong. Here the way, KU fulfilled the request on Friday. This is not KU being like, oh yeah, this is wrong. Here's the documents. This kind of makes me mad based on when the story came out, which was Friday night. You hear the phrase sometimes news dump, which sometimes if you have a company that has something bad or bad PR,
Starting point is 00:05:59 they'll put out the news on Friday at five or after five when all the sports cycle is done. And it won't be talked about till Monday and you have all the games going on over the weekend that maybe gets brushed under the rug and you have all these other things that get attention kind of focused to this tells me that with the story come out Friday night I'll just tell you this I know I believe I don't know I am under the impression I guess I don't know this for a fact I am under this is the impression that KU probably purposely gave this report when they had to to the star on Friday at a specific time
Starting point is 00:06:29 so that they would have to post the article that it was similar to a time for a news dump. That is so messed up to me. So messed up so that this gets swept under the rug. The case is still open. Morris hasn't been arrested, nor has a warrant been issued for his arrest. The Douglas County District Attorney's Office told the Star on Thursday, quote, at this time, this case has not been presented to our office for charging consideration. Okay, so a lot of info I just threw at you very fast.
Starting point is 00:06:54 Again, check out the article yourself in the Kansas City Star. First of all, no charges. So does that mean it's possible that nothing's going to come of this? I guess that could be possible. Is it possible that it is someone else if no charges have been had to Artario Morris? I mean, again, I guess, but why else would he be suspended and why all the no comments about it? If it wasn't him, someone would have just commented and said that it wasn't him. Second of all, why has he not been charged yet? Well, I guess it's possible there never is a charge.
Starting point is 00:07:25 It's also possible usually the DA or whoever waits to get everything is going to wait so they have all the information and have everything to get a full charge. Like it is a legal matter. You're not going to go in just halfway. You're not going to dip your toe in the pool and be like, we think we're going to charge you on this, but we don't know all the details. You're going to wait for everything. So it's going to take time before you actually charge someone. If that is the case, if he does, if he does not, I don't know. You have to be very measured there. So that could be why the charge hasn't officially happened yet. Maybe it won't, maybe it will. I don't know. Is it possible he gets off similar to his last case? Maybe. Or does his last case,
Starting point is 00:08:01 the fact that that is now on record, because even though he worked it down to whatever the lowest class form of that happening was, it still can go on your public record and be on your record when you're applying for jobs. So that is on your record now, even the first case that happened. And now that you have that on your record with this happening, it's probably a little harder to play it down, whether it's to the judge or for different charges or for whatever reason. So I think it'd probably be harder to get off this go around, so to speak. Is it possible if he gets off from a legal perspective and he does able to do that, that KU plays the innocent card? Well, I guess you could, and you could say, well, he got off both times. Then again, I would imagine with KU and bringing him in,
Starting point is 00:08:42 he was probably on a two strikes policy already, that the next strike was the third strike. Then again, I guess you could say that Bill Self was comfortable enough bringing him in, which would tell you that he probably wants him on the team. Maybe KU would say no and Bill Self would say yes. I don't know how that would go. One thing is for certain for me, this was an excellent job by the Kansas City Star and why things need to be questioned. These
Starting point is 00:09:05 are why I have these conversations and question them why we shouldn't just automatically be like, oh, but Bill Self is in the room. He knows a lot more than us. Sometimes that is not the case. Sometimes you might not know or you might not want to know what the correct answer is. Sometimes these things need to be questioned and this is an exact reason why. All right, I'm going to finish up with kind with final thoughts here. First, this episode of the show is brought to you by FanDuel. So I know while some people probably are commenting already, I'm going to be honest, I'm not going to read any of the YouTube comments on this
Starting point is 00:10:02 because I just don't want to go there. There's still going to be some people saying that, oh, the Kansas City Star, they've done this and that in the past or innocent until proven guilty, all this stuff. They're going to play the card. Let's see what happens here. Why are you giving this the benefit of the doubt? I don't know why. If you owned a business and had an employee show up late every single day and give you
Starting point is 00:10:22 a different excuse every single time, the next time he shows up late, you're going to either stop believing him or you're not going to give him the benefit of the doubt about why traffic was so bad or why he had this thing to do at home or why his dog pooped on the floor. You're not going to give him the benefit of the doubt anymore. Why are you giving any benefit of the doubt here at this point with Artaria Morris? He should have never been on KU to begin with, and he certainly shouldn't anymore. This is obviously going to have an impact on on-court impact for KU, and we're going to have plenty of time to discuss that and how it affects the rotation. All that is a pertinent question. We are a sports show, and we will talk about that sports side of things. That is inevitable, and we will get to that at some point. But for this
Starting point is 00:11:03 episode here today, I'm going to end there. I think he should be off the team obviously he's suspended so maybe that's one step toward going there should you wait a little longer before kicking him off the team officially and wait for some of the dust to settle I will agree with that yes but the way this is going and the way the past is gone and the way he came in I think this was a horrible gamble by Bill Self from the get-go. And it's unfortunate. It's unfortunate. This is a sucky situation. You hate to see it from all parties involved.
Starting point is 00:11:32 And I don't know. I don't know where we go from here. All right, that's going to do it for this episode of Locked on Jayhawks. Not a fun one. Sorry the way it was. We'll see you next time. It will be more fun, hopefully, with a KU Nevada recap.
