Which Big 12 quarterback is headed to Rocky Top
to replace Nico Ayamalavea?
Well, we're talking about on the Lockdown Big 12 Squad.
You're talking ball with the Big 12 Squad,
sponsored by Game Time.
From Oklahoma State to Utah, from Kansas State to BYU,
from Houston to Texas Tech,
it's the local experts of the Lockdown Podcast Network,
bringing you scoops, breakdowns,
and the most comprehensive preview
of the upcoming Big 12 weekend. Buckle up, it's the Big 12 squad and we have a seat for you. Know her feelings and thin skin allowed. Squad up, you're part of the Big 12 squad. your host filling in for Drake told today but hey nonetheless having some fun talking all things
BYU unlocked on Cougars next to me that is Parker Engsworth of locked on Cougs don't get it confused
that's locked on Houston for those of you out there Cam Stewart next to him host of locked on
Baylor doesn't have his name you know underneath his you know more important the handle uh at real
camp it's all about personal branding, Jay. There you go.
Hello me, Richie Sanders, Richie Bradshaw. It's a hander.
Okay, BYU. BYU on the brain. Yeah. I don't know. Richie
Bradshaw from Locked on Sun Devils and I am not that good
a shooter. And I got my favorite guy, JT Whistler So from
Locked on Utes and the man, the myth, the legend, Chris Level
from Locked on Texas Tech. How is everybody this evening?
Everyone answer at once.
Great, fantastic.
I'm doing awesome, thank you.
Now, I'm good, because I'm not a Tennessee fan.
Oh, hey.
Oh.
Oh.
As Drake likes to say,
make sure you subscribe to each of our shows
so we can keep our jobs.
That's the number one thing we're all here for
is to stay employed and doing the shows that we do.
But as JT referred to, we're doing much better than any Tennessee fan out there
because their quarterback, Nico Ayamaloveya, apparently has decided that he is going,
well, at least he tried to hold Tennessee hostage for more money.
And it backfired in a big way.
And essentially every one of our quarterbacks is now being rumored to be going to
Tennessee. Is that not correct, everybody?
Rumor, no, they're already there every single one.
I've heard this.
Schuyers there, Levitz there, they're all there.
There's a lot of rumors about who's going where
but I'll just say this,
Nico decided to leave a program like Tennessee
over a couple of million, I think it's just awful
and everything wrong with the sport right now.
That's why you don't let your dads control
where you're gonna go to school.
Yeah, Jake, you hear that?
Imagine that, a parent screwing it up for the kid.
No way, I cannot believe that.
I'm an ASU fan.
I mean, no comment over here, Robert, like, er.
But, okay.
Can you guys imagine if he did this,
what was it, Josh Pate report,
that he almost did this before the before the playoffs game.
Like that's
apparently a few of them.
What?
It wasn't even just him.
That's what that's what bugs me the most.
I did like this thread on Twitter the other day that nobody saw.
But it was so okay.
It's getting a scandal on the screen.
That's why it's on the screen.
So more people.
This is why it's on the screen.
But like we I think we all are on the same page here. Like the way it
was done before NIL was too far in the other direction. Like, I
use the example, you couldn't have the car in front of you by
your Taco Bell in the drive through. Like that's, that's
insane. Right? We all wanted players to get paid in some way.
But through Taco Bell. But this is nonsensical, like to just be, all
right, we're in the playoff now. Extra money. Yeah, like that's not even how the pros work.
You're paid for the regular season in professional sports. You're not paid. I mean, you can have
some incentives, but there's no pay for the postseason.
A postseason incentive would have been
agreed upon ahead of time
as a contract like that's a
whole. With the team is in a
system that they had to make
a choice like we either play
the pay the ransom or out I
mean in the pros you hold out
all you want but you still
hold the rights and then that
those rights are worth a
draft pick or whatever but but you're just,
you're just left with nothing. There's definitely plenty of this screwed up here.
And the thing I couldn't stop thinking of when hearing this paint report was
what if that was Boise state? Like they don't,
they don't just pony up the money in 24, 48 hours and give a couple more million dollars out to whatever six or eight
guys. They can't do that yeah Arizona State Arizona State do
that I don't think so no absolutely not no you're years away from being able to do that
neither either way you don't have the SEC money to to be fair though I think this only
happens at a powerful program because otherwise they're looking to transfer up a division
kind of like you know these QB the whole I mean, it's a good football program.
But he ended up nowhere.
I say, no, he did commit somewhere.
But I know what you mean.
It wasn't a big program.
But he he had also, I almost feel like that's kind of the inverse because the story there
wasn't that he had been told he'd get some money that he never got.
Right.
That's a little bit different.
Allegedly.
Yeah.
Right. Right.
Oh my gosh. You're one to talk face on summer morning too, by the way.
I see we just let them go split screen and fight it out. Solid reporting. I don't think Cam probably the one who wants to get the first swipe in after everything that happened last week.
Also I love how fired up Cam is with his handheld mic today. You like this?
Yeah, I've started to do this.
You were holding onto a pen a little bit ago
for some reason too, I guess you're just.
I've started to do this on my show a little bit more,
the handheld mic, I think it's more personal.
Oh, the Matt Patricia.
It's kind of like cigarettes, the handheld mic.
You know it's.
One third of the show is BYU in Utah.
You gotta explain cigarettes a little bit more. Yeah, I know it's just, you know it's uh. One third of
the show is BYU in Utah. You
gotta explain cigarettes a
little bit more. You know it's
not good for you but it looks
cool as hell. Regular. It's not
candy cigarettes Utah guys. I
think Rob Wright is an
upstanding young man. That's
all I'm gonna say. And BYU is
lucky. His dad's even better.
Look, they don't outspend you. They just out love you.
Yeah. Yes. We will love you and we'll develop you but you know, getting paid along the way doesn't
hurt. Now, which is okay to admit. I'm telling BYU, it's okay to admit that. Cam, you and I are
of a like mind here. Now, that may get us in trouble with BYU fans but you can admit that.
That's okay. Well, that actually explains it because I was going may get us in trouble with BYU fans, but you can admit that, that's okay.
Well, that actually explains it,
because I was gonna ask,
is there a BYU or Utah-ish reason
they're not just admitting
that they're paying them a lot of money?
There's nothing wrong with it.
There's this notion of among certain church leaders
in the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
that you must be more pious
and have to like downgrade why you're doing
what you're doing in a way. That's the issue we're at hand right now Parker is
they want to be like okay yeah we're competitive we're not you know actually
outgunning everybody even though that's exactly what they're doing. Editors note
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does not fund anything BYU athletics related. Thank you, Cam. Thank you for Claire. That's directly from my lawyer.
This is where you wink in the camera.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Not once.
Now, okay, here's the whole deal,
but that comes all back to the else way.
But Chris makes a very good point,
is that in the pro ranks, you have contracts,
you've got CB, you have the collective bargaining agreement
that all hold these guys accountable.
Speaking of you hold rights as a team.
With the transfer portal, the way it's set up
in addition to NIL, as Chris mentions,
either you pay the ransom or you get your guy leaves.
And that's what Tennessee, we're saying,
we're not playing ball here.
And that's the concern I think for any program now.
Richie, you're looking at a guy like Sam Lev.
I look at Jake Retzloff up here in Provo.
You don't need to, you don't need to. They're not going to do that.
Okay, thanks. But here's the deal.
Is that for both of us or just for him? No, Sam's good. Sam's good.
Jake's fine. Jake's fine. I'm not Jake Retzloff. Well, Jake and Jake Hatch is fine as well.
Neither is any Connor Wegman, but you know.
Okay, there you go.
Connor Wegman's not Connor Wegman, man. Just letting go.
Connor Wegman is staying.
You can make the argument,
though, that all six starting
quarterbacks of the six people
of the programs we represent is
better than what Tennessee has
on campus right now, without a
doubt.
I would say that.
I don't know.
The Tennessee fans in the
comments section of my video are
they're okay with their
quarterbacks.
They love that four-star kid.
They love that quarterback room.
McIntyre.
They don't need no big 12 minor leaguers.
Just like they were going to take over the horseshoe against Ohio State.
Uh huh.
But isn't the concern that any one of our quarterbacks, potentially among the six of
us here, that if a quarterback were to decide to hold out, that's essentially what happened
here and say, hey, either you pay me X amount of money. In addition to what I've got going on here,
how many of our programs you think are going to play ball are going to be willing to pony up
on a short notice? I would imagine the BYU, even though they do have pretty deep pockets,
wouldn't be totally cool being shaken down like that.
Well, I think there's that's twofold though. And I mean, to jump in, because I don't think Conor Wakeman
is the one doing that out of the six of us.
But I do think that frankly,
there's some aspect of having the money
and also not wanting to get punked on national television.
And I think that even the school that has the money
doesn't necessarily want to get punked on TV, right, Chris?
We've got money right now,
tech's doing very well right now.
And I don't think they want to get punked
on national TV either.
Yeah.
By the way, by the way, this is funny.
Cam just looked at his phone.
I know what he just saw.
He just got some news about his program.
We can't get into it right now.
Yeah. And I thought you did.
And I thought you were like, okay.
Because there's, yeah, there's anyway.
A little look behind the curtain there.
It's our show here.
It's definitely better than the alternative,
which is I am on locked on NHL game night tonight
and I'm trying to follow.
Okay, yeah.
It didn't have anything to do with that.
Yeah, I think what is interesting about this QB thing
is that here's the point.
I think they, what's the old saying?
They're like, you know, you knew I was a snake when you picked me up.
Oh yeah.
I just saw it.
I just saw it.
Yeah, there you go.
That's not just a Utah thing.
Come on.
But I think that the quarterback is different than any other position on these teams because
they are asked to be
the culture guy and everything. And I think that they already kind of knew that Nico was
maybe a bit of a problem. So this is kind of a, you know, and I would think that everybody
brought their guy into the locker room and is, you know, you're representing the school
thinking you already kind of know that they wouldn't
they wouldn't roll that way so I mean I'm not trying to be naive but I think
you kind of got to know your signal color of anything because that's the
face of your program in many cases. That's a very good point and that that's
the concern I think all of us have to have now is how many guys are gonna try
and follow this game plan you mentioned Matthew Sluca at UNLV he he tried to
shake him down over a hundred K.
We're talking about Nico Iamola holding Tennessee hostage
over what, two million?
The market is far different than it was back in the fall.
Yeah, it's absolutely nuts.
Now the transfer portal continues to give and take
as Cam Stewart well knows, but we're going to talk more
about that and what ultimately,
what's the future here because the house settlement is coming into effect guys and TBD on what
the ultimate final look of it is. I want to dig into that moment. Tara, as you continue
on right here, Unlocked on Big 12 Squad.

All right, boys.
So the house settlement is out there looming
and Judge Claudia Wilkin in Oakland is considering changing
some of the parameters here in terms of maybe smoothing
the roster cut down limit. And before we went live with this, Chris, you were talking about this,
the scholarship limits are no longer a thing. It's not a scholarship limit. It's now a roster
limit that you can actually fund as many scholarships as you want. But I'm of the opinion that you're
going to see more and more power force squads of our ilk,
probably limit the amount of scholarships versus maybe adding as many as they possibly can. And that's the interesting part about this is how much will the
transfer portal and obviously NIL affect all this with this new reality we're
all going to be dealing with in the house settlement era?
Yeah, because what was initially announced is that you're adding
scholarship limits to all these different
sports and I think everybody looked at it and went, wow, this is great.
It's the NCAA's way of saying, y'all been saying that we've been holding this down,
this down.
Hey, you have added.
However, the context is the more scholarships you add compared to what you already have,
those scholarships
are attached to a dollar limit.
Okay.
There's a dollar figure attached to it that everyone.
Okay.
And every, and this is maybe, I don't know if this is universal, if this is campus wide
or statewide, but if you add them a men's scholarship and football per se, then you've
got to add a women's, the title line.
Add a women's football scholarship.
Well, you know, somewhere.
And, and, and in that is that, you know, with these dollar figures attached to these scholarships,
that counts against your salary cap.
So now everybody's got 20 and a half million.
Well, you start adding a bunch of scholarships.
Now all of a sudden you only have 18 and a half million.
That's less money you can actually pay to your starting left tackle or your point guard
or whatever, whatever we're talking.
And then this is why I think the SEC came into this deal
and said, hey, we're gonna keep it everything
at 85 scholarships because we don't want
to hurt our salary cap.
So-
Is that the Cool-Aid Tanner, Drake Toll?
I just did a podcast with him yesterday
and he's even Tanner.
Why Equestrian is such an important sport in college
athletics like title nine and scholarship counts Chris level once again the consummate
professional men good to see you all.
Hello better late than never to your own show. the the
the
the
the
the
the
the
the This is your show to lead. I'm following you. You're steering the ship, sir. Hatch is getting like the Drake Toll face look here.
Was it sunny in Utah this week, Hatch?
A little bit.
A little bit.
Golf season started in Utah, baby.
Let's go.
Ooh, wait.
The greats living on the beach.
So pulling up where Hatch level, where you're both coming from here with scholarships and
the way that the house settlement's gone, where I still get lost in a lot of this and I've had I've had
crossovers with JT cam and Richie this week talking about them are
Are the the in IL limitations with the transfer portal are non-existent?
You can effectively do whatever you want and the difference in what in IL and the NFL free agency is is somehow free agency
has more
stipulations more more cuffs on it than what NIL is. Because again, if I am a
left tackle at Texas Tech, I don't want to be there anymore, but I have a two-year NIL contract,
you can't handcuff me to the football field, I unenroll and I re-enroll at Cincinnati,
and there's really not anything you can do. So we start talking about like your scholarship limits
and where that will go,
the house settlement and revenue sharing.
I still think in at least the year interim
before we get there,
the NIL brokers who are making their big bucks
and the college football players
who can avoid the transfer portal,
like it hasn't even opened yet,
Nico's already in it, right?
That running so rampant is what I think is going to need
to put a limit,
some sort of stipulation, some sort of something on NIL on the board.
Well, and we're sitting here acting like, okay, we're sitting here acting like if
the house settlement gets approved, that somebody's market is worth 3.5 million
if you're a point guard at BYU or 4 million if you play power forward at Texas Tech.
Now we're going to say, guys, you're only good guard at BYU or 4 million if you play power forward at Texas Tech. And now we're gonna say, guys,
you're only good for 600 bucks now,
like at a time on these NIL deals,
or we've got a vet through the,
I mean, that's lunacy that we all think that
you're gonna put toothpaste back in the tube.
And I know everybody wants guard rails and you want limits,
and some people wanna be protected from themselves
in this standpoint.
But I just think it's...
I think that's exactly the thing though, though, Chris,
is that the people that want to close Pandora's box
are the same ones that opened it,
the same one that had the money.
They're begging, the same way that the NFL or the NBA
will put the salary cap to prevent the owners from having to
like just give up all their money right they don't that's really them protect themselves
you don't want bag men to come back don't we come on and you and you'll get them you'll get them
well and i'm not so silly to think that like we're aren't currently operating with bag men
right now either i mean what's reported what's not reported that kind of stuff right but i do think that part of the reason there'll be some sort of stipulation on it is because
the people moving the money will want to protect themselves like you're exactly like you're
insinuating though, Chris, that's part of it is it that's that's why any salary cap
exists.
The one thing that's so fascinating about this to me about all the NIL and the changes
in the things the restrictions we want, like the way to fix it. Do the big dogs, SEC Big 10, do they actually want to fix this
because there's something really fascinating that's playing out right now. I don't know
if you guys saw it, Jaden Notton is the really good running back at cap. He is now in the
portal and already he is attached to Oklahoma as a, as a team to watch for. So if the SEC
and the big 10 can just do this where anytime it's like, Oh, hey, maybe we can get the NIL funds. Now we can go add the
best player from some of these other non ACC, some of these
other non SEC and, and Big 10 teams, like, are they going to
continue to do that? And yes, Nico just left and we talked
about all that too, but I'm curious to see how what it looks
like the big dogs want this, how much of this they want to get
under control when they can frequently benefit from it by
poaching some of the top guys off the programs that aren't like a Texas Tech and a BYU that have an NIL threshold worthy
of those top brands.
That's a good point.
The toothpaste has been, the cap is off and the biggest schools in the country are brushing
their teeth.
This is not benefiting Boise State.
This is not benefiting Washington State.
It's benefiting Ohio State with Will Howard.
And to be fair, it's not even benefiting the majority of the teams in those two conferences.
Right.
In the SEC and the Big Ten.
Like, we laid out the scenario earlier of Tennessee's players holding out
and them needing to cough up a couple million bucks in the span of, like, whatever, a day or two.
I don't know if Michigan State could do that.
I don't know if Illinois could do that.
I think it has benefited the Big 12.
I don't know if Ole Miss could do that.
Rutgers ain't doing it.
So it's just funny to me, like, they all sit in those chairs that come with the hotel twelve. I think it has benefited the big twelve. I don't know if Ole Miss could do
that. Rutgers ain't doing it.
So it's just funny to me like
they all sit in those. Did you
had you sit in the chairs that
have the hotel rooms? Level you
say it has benefited the big
twelve? A thousand percent.
Fancy the oil money guy says
that huh? I mean the rich guy.
Land man level. I mean Jake or
do you think that these rules right now have benefited BYU? The why you the guy with the NHL to most? That's the two most lucrative schools that we're
talking about. When we're talking about Texas Tech at BYU. I've talked about
this at length on my show. I'm not trying to dive into again, but Keanu
Tonovasa was a defensive tackle at Utah. You said he was going to stay. Now he's
at BYU. That's not good for Utah and a lot of the other big players in a Utah
that's how you are. That's how the other just happens.
That's how does two make up the conference soon though, JT is that
they're funneling up to the top
couple dollar brands there too.
That's what we're saying is like
Michigan State can't keep up with
Ohio State. That's what we're saying.
But I would say this like Parker's
sitting there talking from a standpoint
of his team just won the basketball
league championship. Richie's sitting
there. His team just won the football championship. You got two others that are trying to spend
to create those memories and make those things happen. I mean, Baylor is going to be good.
I just think it's with what you've been given. I think you're trying to elevate and you're
creating a buzz about
your league and I don't know
I'm not so certain this isn't
level with BYU and creating a
buzz here let's let's keep it
really. That is nothing to do
with Bumblebees. They love
their own duels up here in
Provo. All right don't we need
a we need a sponsorship don't
don't throw their name out there like that. They're gonna make them earn it. Don't we have a five hour interview sponsorship
from Parker?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Let's see.
New guy Nick and his.
I was coming.
It's so good.
I can't believe it.
Five hour came back.

Do we want to talk more Portal stuff or can I throw something out there real quick
area yeah I don't like it all what are your top five p
all the retired numbers I hate what Colorado football focus question for
y'all since last
this question for y'all since last.
His face got so sad.
I actually think all y'all are going to agree with me.
Does anyone like what Colorado's doing? Like I think both of them would probably eventually get their jerseys retired.
Travis, no doubt.
Shador would be a question.
Why are they doing it now?
This feels very weird.
So why not question on that?
Actually the standard, the standard is much lower these days than it used to be.
It makes me sound like the old guy.
The upside down, yes.
He was just there.
And you want to know why they did that?
Why?
Not upside down, but I think they did that because of that lawsuit.
They're like, please don't sue us, man.
We're going to do something really nice for you.
We held you out for like six weeks through some bad investigation.
I mean, and Travis Hunter makes sense to me.
Shador Sanders does not.
Like what, what did we want here?
When you talk about the lower ring
where the requirements, like I feel like long-term,
especially if he's a first round pick,
like he does well in the NFL,
he would eventually get his jersey retired there,
but it just feels weird to do it so soon for a guy
that didn't win a Heisman like a Travis.
I mean, they, the homes in the ring of honor up here and he did not have just
this all world career at Texas tech, wildly entertaining.
They just didn't win very much.
You put him in because of all the super bowls that he'd won and it's good
optics and politics and everything.
Did they have like a game or something where they brought my homes back to
enter into that ring of honor?
Yeah.
They win the game and they're surely they want a question for me.
They and then Baylor would go on to like, like win one.
I haven't seen it yet.
That's right.
I know how embarrassing we won our Superbowl.
Yeah, that's right.
That's right.
Oh, it was just a bad, yeah, bad, bad for all parties there.
But Houston, like in the last 15 years, put in right. Oh, it was just a bad, yeah, bad for all parties there.
But Houston, like in the last 15 years,
put in stipulations on what it takes
to get your jersey retired
and like just kind of outlined it.
And they did retroactively throw a guy or two in
that met those credentials.
But like in basketball,
you have to have been on a Final Four team.
In football, you have to have done XYZ accolades.
Like, is that not commonplace everywhere? I guess I just assumed
everywhere had something like that. Well, I can tell you, BYU, you have to have graduated from
BYU. Jim McMahon didn't get in for 30 years because he didn't actually finish his coursework for three
decades. When he finally finished it, the very next season, all of a sudden, Jim McMahon's on
LaVella Edwards Stadium field getting his jersey retired. I actually love that though. I love that.
I think that should be how it is. That's loyalty to your program.
That is interesting. Like mine were all on the field, on the court kind of stuff. But I guess that's, I assumed everyone had things. Well, you have to be a first team All-American in one of
those, the AP or USA Today, whatever it was to get it. I mean, that's what you were saying,
right? My homes was not. He's the only exception and they basically like drew into the deal like that.
We're going to take the whole career into account.
I mean, we're getting as part of this is going to be a big factor.
Yeah, that's right.
That's right.
So Oklahoma should retire.
Got to have his number retired with Arizona State.
No, well, they didn't win a league championship.
They won a league championship.
It's more than what the finalists but you're only talking about two years. the league. Well, they they didn't win a league championship. They won a
league championship. It's

thing because you'd play
your junior. Okay. Sorry.

That doesn't mean that it's like in a war.
Oh!

Oh wow.

Like that's, come on.
Peven Bull is not even here to defend himself.
The most single season, single season passing yards.
He's number five in career passing arts in two seasons.
All the guys ahead of him had four years.
He was the most sacked in Colorado history.
With the losing record, losing record in two years.
And a losing record.
No doubt.
One of the worst historical football programs
that you could dream up.
Cordell Stewart died?
Where's Cordell Stewart in all this?
Come on, slash, come on.
Cordell Stewart is still not,
he's six behind Shador Sanders, thank you very much.
In career passing yards, by the way.
Drake, based on your logic,
should Kam Rising's jersey be retired?
I mean, you've talked about it back to back pack 12 times,
like just like today.
No, eventually for sure, but like right now.
Like right now they should just retire me.
They should just do it, just do it, get it out of the way.
And put the jersey upside down and lift it up. And yeah, I don't. Yeah, I
guess you could wait. What can someone tell me why he's
keeping him wait five years like this is absurd. Like that.
Like, okay, yes. But what how cool would it have been if case
Keenum still on campus in the spring and you were tight?
Because you knew you're going to would it be that cool? I don't
like is it any that special? Really? Is all the are all the girls in college going to be like, Oh, we were at your Jersey I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean, I mean,

It's, it's.
I just put a picture of JT on the screen.
He pictured on that.
Is why I once again, I just want to mention very excited to have Molly Miller on
the clock.
She's a great addition to the league.
We should all be very happy that Arizona state basketball has upgraded the way
they have.
And can we
remember what we do not have

This is Parker Rangers from Locked On Cougs
covering the Houston Cougars.
Cam Stewart doesn't like to put his actual show name
underneath his name.
He likes to put that, you know, real Cam Stewart there.
Drake told him the exact same thing
because he's the typical host of this fightin' program.
Richie Bradshaw, Locked On Sun Devils,
