This is the show where people who are nominally intelligent at best are very entered who coughed
locked on big 12 squad. Which one of these is it? There's like 17 videos talking ball with the big
12 squad sponsored by game time from Oklahoma State to Utah from Kansas State to BYU from
Houston to Texas Tech. It's the local experts of the Lockdown Podcast Network bringing you scoops, breakdowns, and the most comprehensive preview
of the upcoming Big 12 weekend.
Buckle up.
It's the Big 12 Squad, and we have a seat for you.
Know her feelings and thin skin aloud.
Squad up.
You're part of the Big 12 Squad.
Happy Thursday, everybody.
Welcome into the Big 12 Squad.
I am red because it's hot in here. Jake Hatch covers BYU.
JT Wister still covers no one. Learn to fill in your name tag next time.
Kevin Borba of Locked On Buffs. Nick Marv, because that's easier to say than his real last name.
Spencer McLaughlin was at the Big 10 championship game.
Forks up. Hey, forks up.
Big Wichita State fan. And Cody Stovall of Lockdown Oklahoma State is in his Grinch outfit.
We are going to do our best to talk about sports.
Grab a beer or something, a brew.
If you're a BYU fan, grab a Dr. Pepper and a Cougar Tail.
We are sponsored by Game Time today on this show.
Fellas, we start with Richie Bradshaw, who will eventually be here.
I'm not sure where he is.
With the Arizona State Sun Devils. And I'll pitch it to you, Spencer McLaughlin.
Is there any chance?
I'll take this one.
Yep.
Is there any chance, number one, that Arizona State can make noise in the college football
playoff, and two, would they have a better shot if they were the three seed?
Those are two very distinct questions.
Let's go with the first one.
Yes, there's absolutely a possibility.
Can anyone name for me right now off the top of their
head the best team that Texas has
beaten this year? Vanderbilt.
Vandy? Probably Michigan.
It's probably Michigan.
Texas A&M
perhaps is the answer. The second
half of the season, Michigan's been good. Does anything
Arizona State can't go toe-to-toe with
those particular teams? You've doubted the Devils once. I would advise you to not do it again. Would
they have a better path as three seed? Yeah, I think Penn State was pretty impressive at the
Big Ten Championship game in a lot of different ways. Andy Kotelnicki, not the head coach at West
Virginia, notably, was really, really good. And Drew Aller, aside from the two interceptions,
which, yes, were costly, he played really, really well. But, Aller, aside from the two interceptions, which, yes, were costly,
he played really, really well.
But, you know, the reality for Arizona State is they get a first-round buy and they get to watch Clemson and Texas wear themselves out
before they play on January 1st.
I think a better question here.
By the way, did you notice, Spencer, we have Duke in our intro.
Did you see that in the locked-on Big 12 squad intro?
There's Duke's football stadium.
16 plus 1, that'll be an awesome stat.
I mean, if you want to have some semblance of a tie to duke right now malik murphy's in the transfer portal he was once at
texas and texas was once in the big 12 so i mean there you go and tulane has more sec championships
than arkansas jake hatch of locked on byu cougars uh the big thing this week and i talked to richie
bradshaw about this unlocked on big 12 was byu fans and borba will get to you even colorado fans
saying hey wait a second it should not have have been Iowa State in the Big 12 championship.
Let's do strength of record, strength of schedule,
instead of this opponent win percentage thing.
Jake, do you believe that BYU should be there in the Big 12 title
against Arizona State in a world where we use a different metric?
Yeah, absolutely.
Here's the thing.
BYU, they wanted another crack at Arizona State,
and unfortunately because the tiebreakers are set up the way they were, BYU misses out on it.
I can tell you, talking with people at BYU, they wanted more than anything to get another crack at ASU because they thought they could upset them.
Did they want a crack at ASU or Kenny Dillingham?
Maybe both.
They hate that guy.
Hate's a strong word.
They don't hate in Provo.
They genuinely dislike the dude.
Let's just put it that way.
What is there to dislike about the youngest head coach in college football?
The fact that he was, you know, the referees.
Oh, dang.
We're going to have to edit out the female dog word from the BYU guy.
Ball people.
Yes. The audacity of a coach to fight for his team okay what a monster i i looking back it was it was an aggressive approach between him and the
officials at the end of that game and he was incorrect in his approach uh though still a very
passionate and good head coach dick before we go to Borba, what say you on Iowa State deserving to be in the Big 12 championship game?
Iowa State, they deserve to be there by all metrics.
There was no committee deciding whether or not Iowa State was supposed to be there.
Now, that being said, to answer your first question to Spencer,
I watched the team firsthand.
Arizona State is winning the national title.
They are unbelievable.
Cam Scadaboo is very, very good.
Heisman's there.
Very good.
Very, very good.
Very good.
Some would say the goodest.
Some might say that.
Without Jordan Tyson absolutely obliterated our secondary,
I felt like, yeah, that was not a fun game to watch.
But they are a very, very good team.
So I don't think it really mattered who they faced,
whether it be BYU or Kevin Borba's buffs there.
Iowa State obviously got the short end of the stick.
But I think Arizona State was coming out on top no matter what.
They were a very, very good team, and I looked to see what they do in the playoff.
You know, Nick, that game reminded me of a different time in college football
when Utah actually contended for conference
championships.
Well played, sir.
Well played. Well, the guy who
did win those conference championships
is still the head coach at
Utah. We will certainly
get there.
BYU alum, new offensive
coordinator, BYU alum, quarterbacks
coach, BYU alum. Utah just likes to take people from Provo, man. Let's go. alum, quarterbacks coach, BYU alum.
Utah just likes to take people from Provo, man.
Let's go.
All right, JT, have at it.
They missed out on their first two hires at OC, so I'm glad they landed someone.
Oh, no, JT roasts himself.
Kevin Borba, did you sit at home and wonder what it would be like to watch travis hunter that's my best uh gus
johnson uh play in the big 12 championship i honestly did and i think it's just one of those
things where you look at the whole picture it's like imagine colorado in the playoff right because
i think just two or three weeks ago we were having the discussion of is the playoff committee going
to leave the big 12 out as a whole right there was discussions of Boise State and maybe Tulane or whoever won the American getting in and so I kind of went from like Colorado is the representative
that'll do it for them to Arizona State's actually really really good which means Spencer I think I
talked about a few times when I went on his show but in terms of Iowa State it reminds me a lot of
TCU in the playoffs and I feel like we need to stop hating on Iowa State where they didn't deserve
it they won the games they needed to right it is what it is and that's the metric that we go off of i would
have loved to see colorado play arizona state because they played last year in colorado beat
them right and both teams were terrible last year so i would have loved to see them play
at a much better full strength this season but that's the metrics we go off of so i know people
are upset but hey that's life and life's not fair what post do you think kevin was in as he was daydreaming about colorado playing in the big 12 title game
hey kevin and me are gonna be talking about uh alamo bowl championships
hey third place championship that's a great now we're calling bulls championships again
might as well might as well come on if a certain vice president
has the gall yes if ward manual has the courage byu gets in uh uh spencer before we go into
a segment where we have to talk oklahoma state's future and utah's future they're both right there
have to get to hey hey hey i won't stand for disrespect they've still got him it's not a new day it's the same day no it's been for 20 years
chandler moore's time uh it's chandler moore is still around yeah he's in still water right now
didn't he play on tcu's team as a starter when –
what's his name was still Colorado's head coach?
Yeah.
Hey, you don't realize Cam Risen's going to come back too, right?
Yes, also Cam Risen could come back.
Please don't.
Spencer, before we move into those subjects,
do you think that conference championships should be decided
by something different than this like fourth tiebreaker metric
of your opponent's win percentage in conference? else are you going to decide it are you going to have
a one-off game are you going to flip a coin a conference championship playoff oh oh yeah i don't
know if you're going to get on board for an extra game i mean i i would watch of course because it
would be exciting but i mean the team that has be exciting, but I mean, the team that has... You get one of the
lost, yeah! The team that has
the best lineup of wins, I don't
know how else you're going to, as a conference,
look at it and say, yeah, we're going to go with
something other than that. Let's just have your mark
throw a dart at the board and see who it lands on
in the college today.
Come any, come any.
Coming up, Utah and Oklahoma State
have new, same head coaches.
This is the Locked On Big 12 squad or something like that.

goes j catch he's thank you j catch just like byu late in the season bansa oh oh a little over two
uh yeah he did get that one basketball player that came to play for byu which is good aj de
bonza how fun is that uh number one this is uh wait we can talk basketball. And I outworked Wonders.
Probably not today.
There's the transfer portal stuff and all that jazz going on.
And head coaching changes or stays the same.
JT, Kyle Whittingham is sticking it out in Salt Lake City.
You and I both thought a couple weeks ago that he probably would.
Is this the right decision for both Whittingham's camp and for Utah?
I think it is.
There are some concerning
oh don't sound too confident wow I I think I believe here's the thing right at the end of
the day it comes down to this Kyle Whittingham has proven he's a really good coach I think
Morgan Scali can be but I don't know what Morgan Scali will be so I think Kyle Whittingham has
done enough yes Utah lost seven of their final eight but in every single game they were in it in the colorado game right if isaac wilson doesn't throw an
interception on the sideline utah still makes that a game and that was with poor quarterback
play last year so i don't think coaching is the number one problem now the problem is can kyle
winningham change his offensive philosophy is he gonna allow jason beck to do the things that at
new mexico helped him have the fourth best offense in the country. That's what I don't know, but I think that Kyle has proven he can succeed in the NIL era still.
I don't like seeing a legendary coach like him go out with a year like he just had,
so I am overall still happy he's back.
But look, some things have to change or else Utah is going to be in a similar spot
where they will be towards the bottom of this conference,
especially if they can't figure out the quarterback position.
Before we go to Cody, Nick i hear that matt campbell is
headed he's headed to west virginia or purdue or somewhere that's not iowa state chapel yeah
he's going to north carolina uh what say you matt campbell's gonna get a statue out here in
so it'd be foolish of him to leave i feel like in the next three to four years, we'll be back in the Big 12 championship two to three more times. So I feel like we've got
the roster and we're starting to get a feel for the NIL and the transfer portal deal. I don't
foresee that happening, but I suppose Matt Campbell is reaching the upper echelon of
turning programs around. So it wouldn't surprise me just from his resume standpoint, but it would
surprise me from the culture he's built. We heard this year how much the team is you know
finally getting that we identity and um it would really pain me personally if he left that's that's
what i'll leave it at spencer you ever heard of jason sheer yes oh interesting sheer did tweet
in his first year as a beat reporter of the Big 12. Rumors!
Don't be shocked.
There's a chance Matt Campbell leaves Iowa State.
I feel like we've had this song and dance way too many times for it to ever come true.
Michigan had Coach Matt Campbell.
USC had Coach Matt Campbell.
Wisconsin had Coach Matt Campbell to you.
You're right.
Yeah, I mean, it feels like in the old definition of insanity,
doing the same thing, expecting a different result.
We keep going back to the well, and Matt Campbell's going to leave.
Guys, he might just like it there in Ames.
How dare you say that?
Yes.
People love it here.
People love it here.
Absolutely stunning.
By the way, JT, I have a question for you.
Is the best thing you can say about the last eight games for Utah,
is they're not Purdue?
I mean, I prefer they're not purdue i mean they're not i prefer they're not florida states about utah also spencer i can't decide because you were sticking up for uh your guys for kenny
dillingham earlier i can't decide if you look more like kenny dillingham or what i've been saying
that you look more like sid from toy story i stop. Will, you know, the commenting crowd can't
decide either, and I'd just like to say
that I'm a big Kenny Dillingham fan.
Always have been, and he is
easily the best-looking coach
in college football.
Yeah, I think Spencer had Arizona
State at 40 going into
this season. 5-7, you buffoon.
Oh, my bad.
I took him over. i took him over their win
total at the same record as utah wouldn't you know five and seven and this uh cody stovall news
out of stillwater that mike gundy restructured contract will he stay will he go he's still there
restructured contract for a guy who had an ultimatum never is a really good sign what is even happening right now
well it was a wild time it was touching to go there uh for a few hours but obviously they found
a way to get it renegotiated i don't know if it's an ordeal where he just flat out you know
denied the original offer and they did a counter offer we're not sure yet how that went down but
nonetheless uh in the middle of the night he found a way to make it work, so he is, in fact, back as the Cowboys head man.
And, you know, that really is accentuated that I think he understands
that he's got to change some things.
We've got a new D.C. now.
We've got a new D-line coach.
And both of those seem to indicate that Mike Gundy is pretty dead set
on having NFL guys come in
and rebuild the defense.
And that, I think, is something worth everybody getting excited about.
Cody, I can't tell if it's the Grinch thing or the Mike Gundy stuff,
but you just genuinely look more sad than normal.
I mean, it's a happy day.
I am pretty irritated about my computer situation.
I mean, it's a happy day.
We love it here.
It's so hard.
Spencer, Mike Gundy is staying home from a national perspective.
Is this good for both parties?
I mean, it feels like Scott Frost at UCF.
I literally don't have a strong opinion one way or the other.
If you told me, if you sent someone from the future and said, this is a disaster, I'd say, yeah, that sounds about right.
Or if you sent someone from the future and said, this is going to go phenomenally well, yeah, that could also sound about right.
I think for Mike Gundy, even more than Scott Frost, the pressure is certainly on in 2025, given that Frost is about to go into his first year at UCF. But I need to see how the transfer portal goes. I need to see who they are able to get. Yeah, you have a new defense coordinator and defensive line coach. That's great. You can
adjust the scheme and work on the tiny little details. But at some point in time, you've got
to have players that don't get run over. I mean, one of the games Oklahoma State won this year,
they gave up over 600 yards of offense.
I still don't know how they won that football game.
It's pretty incredible.
We had them right where we wanted them.
Yeah, exactly.
By the way, Cody, you can turn off the aging filter on Snapchat there on the camera.
Do I look old?
I like it.
I'm working on it.
Well, let's just say you and I probably look like We're at the opposite ends of the old age spectrum
Here on the show
The day is coming
I didn't understand a word you just said
Probably for the better
For Mike Gundy
I think it's next year
You gotta win next year
Or this ship's probably going south
If he doesn't win he'll go pull a Neil Brown or he'll pull a –
we've heard even Matt Rule or Brian Kelly say, oh, we're poor.
How are we supposed to win?
We already did that thing.
That's the great excuse.
Right.
Mike Gundy's even said, we're poor.
No, he said, we're poor.
Oh, that's right.
That's an answer.
The fans are poor.
We're poor.
Mike Gundy.
Yeah.
Coming up in the third segment, Parker Ainsworth submitted three videos this week,
and I can only imagine what they're going to be.
This is the Locked On Big 12 squad that's about to be just thrown into chaos.

Alright, the first video says start
with Nick.
Start with Nick. Alright, Nick, get ready for this.
Kick in the pants.
New guy Nick and his Iowa State Cyclones made it to a bowl game.
I have to say I'm very jealous about a lot of things.
Winning football games, getting to a bowl game in particular.
But I'm really jealous of the bowl game you made it to, the Pop-Tart Bowl.
And so I think the natural question is, starting with Nick,
what is your favorite flavor of Pop-Tart Bowl. And so I think the natural question is, starting with Nick, what is your favorite
flavor of Pop-Tart and why is it cinnamon brown sugar? I mean, that's the obvious choice here,
right? Tell me what you guys think. I'm going to start with Nick, though, as the Pop-Tart Bowl
recipient. All right, Nick. him Nick what's the answer
Oh I just
I really did not expect him to ask that
I did not know where he was going with that
What are you saying are you insulting his intelligence
Are you saying it was a bad bit
Did he have two five hour energies this time
I think he upped
New guy Nick
He did And Nick you're making fun of the man himself
what's your answer nick cookies and cream is a solid one it's i feel like a little bit slept on
but if you're gonna go sugary breakfast treat cookies and cream you might as well go all the way parker how cold texas uh 40 um so my next question was going to be actually throwing it back to cody because i
feel like cody's had a lot of pop tarts in his life if i'm being really honest i feel like cody's
good judge of this yeah i'm more of a i'm more of a toaster guy myself all right but uh
if yeah i would go cookies and cream as well.
That's the best call there is.
The question is, do you toast them?
Yes.
And I put butter on top.
That's some Oklahoma stuff right there.
How about another big coaching decision?
We mentioned this guy earlier, Scott Frost.
Mike Giddens locked on UCF.
We've got a bad case of frostbite down in Orlando.
There it is.
No cure for frostbite.
Oh, it is so bad.
Mike, what is the vibe around the program,
around the fan base right now for UCF with Scott Frost returning?
It's mixed, man.
A lot of people feel like it's a retread hire. Other people
feel like, hey, this is a great decision. He just hired his former QB from the undefeated season,
McKenzie Milton, as his quarterback's coach. Look, man, they've got to fill out the rest of
the staff quickly and hit the portal hard. So where should the floor be for ucf is it six wins
with scott frost in year one is it seven wins well i think they had enough talent this year to win at
least six or seven games coaching is why they landed up where they landed up uh but yeah man
a lot of people are really excited about this hire he needs another shot he's looking to get
back into coaching uh and what better place than a place where he had massive massive success uh about seven years ago now yeah yeah mike as far as gus malzahn
leaving orlando is that seen as mostly a positive by the fan base felt like there at the very end
things really weren't working out for either party they were done with gus yeah like they were
total cuss and it was ucf's best case scenario because Gus, in talking to
people close to Gus, a number of former Auburn staff followed Gus down there to UCF. So I had
a lot of insight into what it was like there for him. And he just, he wasn't having fun.
He wasn't having fun at all. He was miserable as the head coach. And they worked out a deal where no money had to change hands for him to exit.
And that was UCF's best case scenario. So he takes the offensive coordinator job at Florida State.
They don't have to pay him a big buyout. He doesn't have to pay them any money.
And everybody can just move on with their lives. So I think fans are happy.
They generally understand Gus Malzahn is a good guy.
He's a good guy.
He's not the guy you hate, right?
But you're happy to move on and get a fresh start here.
He had ample opportunity to get UCF going in the right direction.
He struggled with whether the call plays or whether or not the call plays.
And, you know, look, this is a results-driven industry,
and the results just weren't there.
We've talked a lot about coaches over the course of this show.
Kevin Borba, Deion Sanders, at the time of recording,
is still the head coach at Colorado,
and something that not a lot of people are questioning,
whether or not he'll stay.
It sounds like, by and large, he has made a home in Boulder.
Is that the case right now?
Yeah, that's the case by all intents and purposes.
I haven't heard anything to indicate he'd leave i think the only sort of we'll call it a chance for him to leave is if
a team is in the nfl is willing to hire him and draft his son i think that's everybody's sort of
hypothetical that they keep throwing out there that still makes sense um even though he's said
a bajillion times like as much as many times as as Parker has asked us about food, Deion Sanders has said that he does not want to coach in the NFL.
So I don't know if he'd be willing to go back on his word and say, like at one point he said he doesn't follow his sons.
Right. That's his whole thing is they follow him. He doesn't follow them. And so I don't see why he would jump to the NFL.
So I think Colorado, he's got a kickstand down, as he said. So why would he want to leave? He has full autonomy of the program, basically can do whatever he wants.
He sells his merchandise, uses the portal however he wants,
brings in whoever he wants on his staff.
Why would he want to leave?
Not every program would give him that.
Yeah.
Cody, when you have a Mike Gundy, and this goes for you too, JT,
and Kyle Whittingham, who have been there for two decades,
facing a Deion Sanders who's already this wonderkins of a college coaching world,
are you worried, Cody, we'll start with you, that a Gundy can keep up with the momentum of a Deion Sanders who's already this this like wonderkins of a college coaching world do you
are you worried Cody we'll start with you that a Gundy can keep up with the momentum of a Deion
Sanders who's in the same conference well no I think Gundy's been so old school it's been
somewhat problematic I think an entire readjustment of the staff the overhaul that's about the only
thing that I think can add an injection otherwise it doesn't seem as
though mike gandhi you know has the ability to catch up at the moment but uh more of a ceo role
might help that yep jt can whittingham keep up yeah i mean i think he can't for one more year
because i mean he wasn't even supposed to be going into 2025 as the coach it's been reported that
like everyone thought he was going to retire
until about midway through the season when things kind of started to change as it wasn't going to be
the right off into the sunset ending that we all thought it was going to be. So yeah, I mean, I
think for one more year, candy. Yeah. I mean, he's still a really good defensive coach. We talked
about earlier, Utah was still, it was in that game against Colorado had a chance to be in that game.
I should say against Colorado. Right. So that's where I do. I don't think this team is that far off from that.
But, yeah, I'm very curious to see when Morgan Scali takes over.
I still think the culture in Utah is strong, so I think they can be in it.
But, I mean, the Buffs aren't going anywhere,
and I think Colorado is going to continue to out-recruit Utah.
I don't know if Utah's NIL resources are what a BYU's or a Colorado's are right now,
and I think that's something that all of the Big 12 is going to be dealing with is who is the best NIL and then if you can't get the best players how do
you develop them Utah's had a history of developing players just not quarterbacks so they're going to
need to figure that out but I think they can compete with the buffs but it's going to be
tough when Colorado continues to bring in and add the talent they were and I mean I don't think
anyone's disputing this but it is crazy to look at like back at what happened to Colorado after the Nebraska game to now,
and Deion Sanders has been more than a home run for the Buffs.
Yeah, no doubt.
Parker Ainsworth, for you, I mean, new AD and new football coach
in the span of a year for Houston.
What is the trajectory, and maybe even more so,
how are fans putting together this first season under Willie Fritz?
And now getting two new coordinators, too. I'm just glad we're talking about old coaches and you didn't bring up
Willie first. I think people really like Willie Fritz a lot.
Defensive head coach, so you lose the defense coordinator, but people still feel comfortable with
what Willie's got going on. Found a lot of G5 guys that
turned into, I mean, they're all of their all-conference kind of guys that made the
list on the defense side of the ball were G5 guys before they came to Houston.
The offense, they dumped the coordinator before the final game, and they just brought in
Slay Nagle, Willie's guy from Tulane, who was at LSU actually in between, and are hoping
to turn things around there.
People have faith in Fritz.
I think people might have thought it was going to happen faster because they see it happening
faster elsewhere.
Like JT said, the NIL resources can slow you down in the rebuild.
It can speed you up too if you've got them, but if you don't,
it can slow you down a little bit.
Well, this was certainly one of the most informational,
locked on Big 12 squads of all time where we actually talked about sports, which has been a sad, terrible recent.
And Pop-Tarts.
Thanks to Parker Ainsworth
calling Nick out.
Next week, Parker.
Even though your team didn't Saturday.
Wow, there you go.
I'm out.
There goes Nick.
That was Jerry Pop-Tarts, guys.
Where's Richie?
Yeah, no Richie this week.
I guess I'll have to do the crossover with him
to make sure he's okay.
The way we celebrated ASU, was Richie okay?
Do we know where he is?
Richie is still recovering. Hopefully he had some Z-Biotics.
We'll celebrate.
Z-Biotics and him.
Great sponsor plug.
All the sponsor plugs.
Omaha Steaks.
Coming up the rest of this week
and going into next week, too,
we will certainly be talking
to all of your favorite Big 12 teams
with the Locked On Big 12 squad
and our hosts,
our family of hosts
from JT Westersell with Utes
and Kevin Borba with the Buffs,
Cody Stilwell, Locked On Oklahoma State,
Nick Maravitz covering the Cyclones,
Parker Ainsworth with the Cougs,
and Mike G of Locked On UCF.
This has been and always will be
Locked On.
Thanks for making it your first listen
every single day.
Dos e grandes, squad.
