Starting point is 00:00:00 Kansas smokes Texas A&M Corpus Christi, but no Darren Peterson tonight. Then again, we did get to see possibly the breakout game for Cole Rosario. You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's going on, Derek Johnson here? This is Locked on Jayhawks. Starting point is 00:00:45 And on today's episode of the show, we are breaking down, recapping KU's dominant victory over Corpus Christi, Darren Peterson, Hurt. We're going to get into a little bit of that. We're also going to have a separate video on that specifically and possibly the breakout game that we, all wanted to see from Colorsario, we'll get plenty other takeaways from the game, positives, negatives, game awards, stats of the game, all that coming up on this episode of the show. Let's start right here. So Kansas wins 77 to 46 with the Darren Peterson entry. Again, as I am recording this, the game just ended.
Starting point is 00:01:20 We heard during the ESPN Plus broadcast that we were going to hear more in the post game. That certainly, I think, led to even more anxiety among KU fans about like, oh, if we're not going to hear about it until the post came from bill self what does this necessarily mean i think a lot of people were assuming coming into it you know but before we heard that okay maybe this just more of the cramping stuff which you know that would be another kind of story on its own but then there was a report from jeff goodman uh with i guess on three field of 68 talking about a uh a strained hamstring or something like that so um we'll see again either way it's not good news for k u that darren peterson is missing games whatever it's for
Starting point is 00:01:59 And if it is a, you know, a serious injury, that's obviously very bad for KU. They're going to need to show they can do some things without him potentially. And there's a lot of long-term takeaways that we're going to get to in future episodes. And again, stay tuned because we will have a specific episode just talking about the Peterson news once we hear about it from Bill Self. So the rest of the show, we're just going to focus on what happened in this specific game. And I think the most positive takeaway, the biggest takeaway that you could have for KU in this 31 point win was the performance of Cole Rosario. because, yes, it's against Texas A&M, Corpus Christi, a game that we're probably not going to have great memory of a couple months from now.
Starting point is 00:02:36 But in a start to the season that things have looked very uncomfortable and just not totally right for Colerzari, like he's still made some of the hustle plays and some of the offensive rebounds, but you just haven't seen the shot come around. You haven't seen the confidence for Col Rosario. And you've also seen like some of the misses have been. It's not just, oh, the balls were him and out or, you know, just, hit off the side of the rim, but it was lined up well. It's like they've been, they've been clanking a little bit there. And you can tell that it just, I don't know, if it's nerves or
Starting point is 00:03:07 early part of the season, but it just hasn't looked fully comfortable for him. Well, he looked fully comfortable in this game. He looked fully comfortable from the word go. He gets two alleyup dunks within the first, what, I don't know, a handful plus of made baskets for, for KU in this one. And it just felt like he needed to have this kind of slump busting game to build his confidence for some of these, you know, future games for KU. And so he winds up leading Kansas with 16 points in a very balanced scoring effort for KU. He goes six of 10. He goes two of six from three. He gets five rebounds and he does it all in 25 minutes. He just looked smooth. He looked confident. He looked everything you want. And as you are trying to figure out this team
Starting point is 00:03:46 long term, their best bet for being the best team they can be is Cole Rosario hitting his ceiling, whatever that can be here, his freshman year. Now, if we want to circle back on the there and Peterson stuff. If Peterson ends up missing extended time at all with the injury, it's even more of an onus on Col Rosario to be a shot maker and shot creator for KU on offense if Peterson is hurt. But even if Peterson is there, you know, having that three-point shooter, somebody he can trust as kind of a robin to his Batman in certain ways become super important as well. So like either way, that is a big step just to see him have that level of confidence. I will say, I thought some of the, I, I,
Starting point is 00:04:26 think some of the other interesting parts of this game are kind of lineup related, right? With Peterson out for the game, I think the automatic answer, if people were, was going to be to expect Bryson Tiller to start because he's played so well for Tateu, and he had a good game in this one, too, too, that you would have expected Tiller to start and maybe it was going to be too big basketball. Wanted to being on Marco Jackson, I don't necessarily know that that tells me, like, I don't view that as, oh, I think, I don't view it as Bill Self thinks that necessarily Elmarco's been better than Tiller to this point. I think I just view it more as Bill Selle
Starting point is 00:04:56 wants to maintain, he only has three big men on the roster, right? So he wants to maintain some of that big depth coming off the bench, not that they won't play too big basketball. And I think also he wants to maintain playing kind of a two point guard lineup. I think he also probably used this as a bit of an opportunity because El Marco hasn't looked super comfortable so far this season to maybe get him more opportunities in the starting lineup and more reps for KU. And maybe he does feel like, hey, if Tiller keeps coming along, that'll eventually be a starting lineup. But if we can get this guy playing, you know, well to this point in time, maybe, like, maybe that's good as well. I think some of the other line of things, like we saw some of the other guys who maybe haven't
Starting point is 00:05:32 been given as long of a leash in the potential rotation battles, guys like G. and G. and Gala come in and look pretty good in limited minutes. We saw Jaden Dawson play a little bit more and, you know, maybe find a little bit of confidence in this game. Like, honestly, like, we saw Jamarie McDowell play a pretty good amount of minutes. I mean, he played 15 minutes. And I thought he had some impressive plays. gets a three in the first half. He had, um, so like nice diving defensive effort. He had some nice defensive plays where he helped force that like kind of full court steel at one point where he was next to Jaden Dawson. And the longer this goes where, you know, again, Dawson did have a
Starting point is 00:06:08 solid game here, 20 minutes, seven points. He hit a three. He had a couple assists. I thought the defense was solid for him. But the longer this goes where Jemari McDowell continues to, you know, have a few plays here or there where, okay, you know, that was good in a role, uh, for him. And the, the more you start to kind of wonder, okay, is McDowell going to play himself into the rotation? Again, I don't know that I'm fully there, but it continues to be more of a talking point, the longer we kind of go. I think outside of that, some of the biggest positives for KU and this one have to be back to the defense.
Starting point is 00:06:40 There were still some moments in the early part of the second half where you gave up way too many easy buckets on the inside, easy dunks. But the overall, they responded to it better this time than against Carolina, obviously easier opponent to do that against. But you only give up 46 points. You held them to 32% from the floor. You held them to 1 of 14 from 3. You had 15 points off turnovers, off 12 turnovers.
Starting point is 00:07:06 So a good kind of conversion rate there. And this is the biggest part of it to me. We talked about coming in, how A&M Corpus Christi, this is a team who wants to post up. They want to get inside. They want to get to the free throw line. And you were able to keep them to 12 of 29 on layoff. with, you know, some of your length, they ended up having 32 points of the paint where you
Starting point is 00:07:29 ended up scoring them in the paint. They actually came in pretty good at preventing shots of the rim into this one. And maybe most of all, a team who came in solid and offensive rebound rate and has been a pretty good team the last couple years under their current coach, we've seen KU struggle defensive rebounding-wise to the early part of the season. That was not the case at all in this game. A&M Corpus Christi only had six offensive rebounds. You compare that to Kansas grabbing 37 defensive rebounds. So that is an incredible defensive rebounding game, regardless of who you go up against if you're Kansas, but especially a team who wants to try to crash the offensive glass. So I think those would be, you know, some of the biggest positives in this game
Starting point is 00:08:10 for KU. I mean, if you want to add this in there, this kind of goes in that same, you know, vibe of the inside play. Twelve to three in blocks, we'll get to that more instead of the game, but that's pretty incredible as well. I think some of the biggest negatives, though, you would still say, I mean, the Darren Peterson injury, like, again, we'll have a separate bonus video just talking about that once we get the actual news from Bill Self, so I don't want to go too much into that, but obviously, it's not good news there. Florida but doing a foul trouble, that's not great because that is now a couple games this season when you include the exhibitions where that has kind of been a thing for Floree and, you know, in the bigger game, it didn't matter as much
Starting point is 00:08:44 in this one, but in the bigger games, it becomes a problem, especially for a team only has three big men and really with only Flory and Tiller who were part of the like double digit minutes. I know MPA played 11 minutes in this game, but in real rotation games, those are the only two like double digit minute big men, at least right now for KU. I think the other one would be the turnovers for biggest negative from this one for KU. I mean, obviously you wound up with 18 turnovers. I do think not having Darren Peterson hurts you there, right? He's somebody who you're used to handling the ball a lot.
Starting point is 00:09:16 and Elmarco had probably too many turnovers in this one. He ended up with two, which I know that's not a huge number, but it felt like there were even more than that. I don't know, counsel a bit on characteristic. He's not usually like a three turnover game. So that was a thing for KU. Some of that can just be early season basketball. We'll wait and see how that carries over if it is a Peterson thing or what.
Starting point is 00:09:37 But that is something that you have to tighten up, certainly when you think about playing in Big 12 play against teams. Typically a lot of the other Big 12 teams are really good at forcing turnovers. You think about the Duke game and the Yukon game and some of the big games, K. He was going to be playing. Will Wade, you know, they usually have athletic teams with wherever he's been, whether it was LSU or McNece State. And so that's something you do have to tighten up moving forward.
Starting point is 00:09:59 Maybe it was one off because they've had some other games where, you know, it's been lower, certainly, like the Green Bay game. And then they've had other games where maybe they've had moments of turning it over too much. So I'm still interested to see where that kind of, you know, hones in for this Kansas team. All right, let's give out our moments, awards. stats of the game, all that coming up. This is Lock on Jayhawks. This episode of the show is brought to you by Supply House. Our moments of the game for KU, you know, when you blow a team out and kind of do that from like the word go, it's not necessarily something where like you can think of a bunch of moments just be like, wow, that was like the game turning moment for KU because that's not necessarily true. So you kind of default on like, okay, the early moments that set the tone or just kind of the cool moments, the fun moments, like the Simis Calderon like dunk at the end, that was just kind of cool, like that was just a fun athletic play to watch, right?
Starting point is 00:11:50 But I think just to kind of get things going, it wasn't the first basket. KU was already up to two nothing, but the alley-up that they threw to Cole Rosario where he kind of grabs it, it's maybe a bit behind him, so he has to grab it with one hand. And he just kind of stayed floating in the air to be able to get there. It looked like, I don't know if the past was, you know, came a little too late or if he jumped too early, but he still just. hung in there and still dunked it. And that was one of a couple early Alley Upe for him. That kind of just set the tone in one of our biggest takeaways, Rosario having the big game
Starting point is 00:12:20 and for KU, I think as a whole. I don't think this is a particularly great game for O'Marco Jackson, and I still do have some questions about a bit of a, I don't know, not very loud start to the season for him, but I will say this. This might have been, I know O'Marco Jackson had that crazy awesome dunk in the big 12th tournament against Cincinnati a couple years ago. That was the coolest play, I guess you would say, the most fun play of L. Marco's career so far. I think the best play, arguably, of L. Marco's career actually did happen in this game. Again, overall, there are still some things you got to work out, but I at least come away with this. There was a drive. It was, KU was up 29 to 11.
Starting point is 00:13:02 And one of the big things that I've mentioned before with El Marco this season is that he has all the athleticism and quickness in the world, but it feels like he doesn't actually get by guys on occasion. And I think the biggest reason why, if you ever notice like Frank Mason, Frank Mason was the king of this, this other guards who do it really well too, but Frank was always really good at this, where if he got you on his hip, you were staying there or you were ending up on his back. Like you were not going to get back in front of him. The body control to keep them there was so good and changing speeds, pace, all those things that it made you, you know, put you in a worse position when they're driving, right? And that's something.
Starting point is 00:13:38 that it feels like how Marco doesn't have, at least as yet. There was a drive when KU was up 29 to 11, where he did a great job keeping the guys hip, driving by him, and laying it in for a bucket. So I'm not, you know, through, I guess, three games and five with the two exhibition games, I still have some, okay, what's exactly going to be the output here from a Marco Jackson? But seeing that when we didn't see that in the first couple games, at least has me hopeful that maybe there's like a flash there of a little improved. that you can kind of work on from there, right?
Starting point is 00:14:10 That could be something to work with. I really like the one play in the second half where so Melvin Council goes down. He throws the alley-up and Floreses it. And then it was either the next possession or like the one after that. Melvin gets it like in transition and he just sees an alley and he puts his head down, gets to full speed, does it so fast as always. And it wasn't even this like this is what I love about Melvin Council's transition game. sometimes he will push and run really hard to get down the court,
Starting point is 00:14:41 not necessarily because he thinks he's going to get an easy layup out of it, but because he sees something that goes, hey, if I hustle down the court and use my speed, they might cut me off, but it's going to get somebody else open. And that's exactly what happened. He dishes it to the corner,
Starting point is 00:14:54 Trey why it hits a three. And I think you're going to see that throughout the season. And then this was just a fun one too. Bryson Tiller catches it like at the top of the three point arc takes, I think it was two dribbles, and then kind of just gets his way. way to the rim, which, again, seeing the athleticism and the, I don't know, the balance, I guess you would say for a big man to do that and then throw down the dunk.
Starting point is 00:15:15 Like, that was just kind of a fun moment for the game. Under the stat of the game, I alluded to this earlier, 12 to 3 in blocks. I mean, 12 blocks is a lot for KU. I'd be curious to know what the most blocks they had last year. I'm actually going to go try to look that up. But in the meantime, I mean, 12 blocks is a lot. And obviously, this is a KU basketball team that. should be a good shot blocking team, right?
Starting point is 00:15:40 I mean, they have a bunch of wingspan from all their kind of three center positions and even some of the positions that aren't centers like this is a team that, you know, has at least good wingspan. And by the way, yeah, last year, so they had 12 shot blocks in the 51 point win at UCF. Then they had two others with 10. They had one with nine and then a bunch of others was seven. I think there's going to be other games where they get up to like double digits. just really impressive there.
Starting point is 00:16:09 The 18 to 8 and assists in favor of KU, I think that tells a bit of a story there. I think that's a good stat to kind of point to in this one. The defensive rebounds being 37 when you gave up to six offensive rebounds, that's a great stat of the game against team who knew you wanted to do that. And also against, you know, for Kansas, they've kind of struggled in that area coming in. So I think those would be the biggest stats to me that stick out for a stat of the game here.
Starting point is 00:16:34 And then our awards here, we have. the, I kind of want to see you play a little bit more minutes and see what happens award. And that goes to Gingala, came in at the end of the first half. I think you played four minutes at the end of the first half. Ends of playing three kind of a garbage time at the end of the second half. But he hits a couple threes. He has a rebound and assist and is in the end with the six points in seven minutes. And I just, I don't know, having like another shooter out there, another creator,
Starting point is 00:17:01 I get it. There's limitations with his size on the defensive end. And I don't know. I just like, sometimes it feels like there are moments of empty calories with O'Marco Jackson. And I get it again, like El Marco, the potential is there. So you want to play him through it because the ceiling, the payoff could be really good. And also the defense is going to be better for O'Marco than Gengala. But there are certain moments where I'm like, or you're watching, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:17:24 Jamari McDowlin, you're like, can Gengala just come in and just can a three, though, you know? And I wouldn't, hey, especially if Darren Peterson does have to miss time and you need more shot making and shot creation, I don't know. could you withstand 10 minutes of Gingala game? I don't think I would hate it, to be completely honest with you. Vindication, KU is actually good award. I mean, first of all, North Carolina just absolutely lambasted the team they played today, as they should have. They were not playing anybody too crazy.
Starting point is 00:17:53 They beat Radford, 89, 74, but that game was way more than that until kind of the end. But Louisville, Louisville, at least as I'm recording right now, 95 to 88 with like a little over a minute against Kentucky. Kentucky preseason top 10 team had like over a several reports of like a 20, 22 million dollar roster or something. And I get it. The KU Louisville game was an exhibition. They're doing different rotation patterns, but both teams were still trying to win the game. Both teams still had a pretty full assortment of their players.
Starting point is 00:18:23 I know K Sean Pryor didn't go for Louisville too, but it was also a road game for KU. I'm not taking that game as to say that Louisville or that Kansas is definitively better than Louisville. No, I don't think you should do that. that out of an exhibition, but I point to it to say that Kansas controlled a majority of that game and to be like, that has to at least account for something and furthers my idea that, okay, I'm not overly worried about the North Carolina results, at least as of just yet. And I point back now to that Louisville game as kind of an extra to be like, see, there's some moments within this team. And so that, I think in addition to just how much Kansas dominated this
Starting point is 00:18:58 game, certainly feel a little bit better than you did after Friday night. Let's get on to our game Balls, offense, defense, what's next for KU? This is Locked on Jayhawks. Starting point is 00:20:15 So game balls in this one. Let's start with the offensive game ball for KU. I think that has to go to Cole Rosario, 16 points, led KU in shots with 10 of them, tied for the team lead and made threes. He had two. G. Angala had two. He also had two offensive rebounds. That led KU in offensive rebounds.
Starting point is 00:20:32 There were a couple of players who had one. K, you had a couple that went out of bounds that went their way. So just in a lot of ways contributed to winning. You only had one turnover. He was plus 18 and plus minus. So Colrosario, I think, pretty easy pick. You had a bunch of others in double digits. Trey White had 11 points, and he had four assists.
Starting point is 00:20:49 So, you know, that's a good day at the office. Florey had 12 points on 6 of 7, though, you know, a lot of that obviously set up by others on some of the Alleyoop stuff. And then you get Bryson Tiller with 11 points off the back. bench. He also had an offensive rebound. So I would say Cole Rosario, though, pretty hands down for offensive game ball there for KU. Defensive game ball for Kansas, in a game where you had 12 blocks, I feel like we have to pick somebody who had a bunch of blocks. The thing is, when you get 12, a lot of people had him, Col Rosario had one. Marco Jackson had two, credit to him. Melvin Council had one.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Florida Bedunga had four. One for Samis Calderon and three for Bryson-Tiller. Now, if we throw the steals in there, too, Jaden Dawson had two of them. You got one. steal each from Justin Cross at the end of there, Jemari McDowell, Gingala, El Marco Jackson, and Trey White. Is there a case to be made that El Marco Jackson with a steel in two blocks could have it there? I mean, you look at A&M Corpus Christi, so Frank Yetna had 11 points on five of 10 shooting. Nobody else for them had more than eight points. But I go to this. We talked a lot about, you know, in the pregame and deservedly so for them that Mason Gibson, who, you know, came in shooting 43% from three on high volume from three.
Starting point is 00:22:05 He was going to be somebody to watch. Well, he went one of seven in this game. He had five points and it was a minus eight in 23 minutes. So I think you give credit to there to Marco. That's Melvin Council, kind of on those guys defensively. And they didn't really let, you know, the glass cleaning potential of A&M, Corpus Christi to become a thing. So that's where you could go back to kind of some of the big men for KU,
Starting point is 00:22:29 though you did allow some of those easy buckets kind of. on the inside. So at the end of the day, I am going to actually give this one tell Marco Jackson. There was at least one drive that I remember him getting beat on, but still, man, two blocks, one steal for a guard. He had the best plus minus on the team at plus 30, even though, like I said, it felt like there were some moments where, yeah, maybe there were a little empty calories there. I don't know. Maybe on review that'll look better than we remember. So we'll give him the defensive game ball here for KU. So what is next for the Jayhawks? Well, this weekend, they're going to playing against Princeton. That'll be back home in Allen Fieldhouse. And then it is the big
Starting point is 00:23:07 one with Duke and the Champions Classic on Tuesday night in New York City. We'll have previews for both those games. We'll have postcasts for both those games. And don't forget, we are going to, after we're done recording this, posting this, we're going to be back in the lab and doing a little what did Bill Self say about Darren Peterson react into that as well.
