Starting point is 00:00:00 Visit time for Deshaun Good and Terrence Hill will lead it to anything for KU basketball as they try to get the portal going. And hey, they do have a player. Cole Rosario is back. You are Locked on Jayhawks. Your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day. What's going on? Derek Johnson here and on today's episode of Locked on Jayhawks, we're going to be breaking down some of the latest news.
Starting point is 00:00:33 some portal departures. We'll get to Colorsario being back for his second year for Kansas. And we'll start here with Visit Day for KU. A shout out to my buddy Adam Treveta for the unbelievable headline of Good Hill Hunting, which is the, I don't know, the thumbnail for today's show because Deshaun Good, Terence Hill visiting KU, I don't know, maybe you get a little Lumacha, Lumacha alavodka in your system or Penay Ragu or something. and then you're feeling it overnight and you stick around in Lawrence and see the beautiful sky from the storm that fortunately was more so passing by other areas, which by the way, I hope you're okay if you're in some of the surrounding areas like Ottawa and Paola and stuff. But anyway, Deshaun Good, according to Adams, Zagoria, visited Kansas today. He also posted a picture on his, I don't know, one of his social medias or something that was making the circles of being at the Kansas City Airport.
Starting point is 00:01:26 Terrence Hill was confirmed to be in KU and visited Kansas on a Monday as well. These are two top tier portal targets, not just because Kansas doesn't have a commit yet, which is true and they need to get them, but also because these are two like dudes. These are guys that I have fallen in love with their games in the deep dives that I've done. Deshawn Good was like the second portal deep dive I did of the offseason. And I went into it like, okay, this dude's put up good numbers for Robert Morris. What could this be? And then I came away just like, oh my gosh, KU has got to get this guy. And then Tarantale was the other one that I recently did where, again,
Starting point is 00:02:01 you look at some of the surface stuff and watch some of the initial highlights. You're like, okay, this gets pretty good. And then you dig a little deeper. You watch even more highlights. You watch some of the recap of his NCAA tournament games. And I'm just sitting there like, man, this guy looks like a potential like star guard for KU in the making. And this is two huge visitors because it really sets the tone for Kansas what's going to happen the rest of the portal season. Not just because these are two players I view as being starters if they were to join Kansas, but also from the standpoint of right now you have no momentum.
Starting point is 00:02:31 You don't really have a roster. Can you start building that momentum and building that roster with a couple huge pieces here with Hill and Good? So let's start with DeShon Good. Just a reminder. Again, check out our deep dive episodes where we went further in some of these players. And if you already did, thank you for doing that. But Good will be a junior this year. He's from Robert Morris, who, you know, Alverell Folgaris, the big man for Iowa, hit the game winning shot against Florida.
Starting point is 00:02:57 Was there starting? He kind of started. He played a lot for them. it's the five. He's more of a power forward. You know, had a decent season in Iowa. Good has put up slightly better numbers than Fulgaris did. Robert Morris, I think different players, Fulgaris, again, more of a four, five. I think good, more of a true four. Certain things that Fulgaris did better. Certain things, good did better. But good put up ridiculous numbers, 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds per game.
Starting point is 00:03:23 Offensive rebound rate over 11%. That's excellent. Defensive rebound rate over 21%. Excellent. Again, anytime you're approaching 20% or better, on the defensive rebound rate, you're really working with something there. Shot 65% on twos, that is really, really good. 58% on threes. I don't think I need to explain that one to you because you know that one is really good. 76% at the foul line, just to add a little more efficiency there. And the metrics love this kid as well.
Starting point is 00:03:48 I have been doing a, so I pretty much have been putting together like the wind shares and the RAPM and the WINS above replacement players and the P.E.R. and the on-off numbers and the Evan Miakawa numbers of, you know, what their BPR, their value and stuff like that is. And I've been kind of putting it together into a kind of smushed together all-in-one metric, kind of given different values to those different areas. And based on those, when you take a look at it, Deshaun Good is, you know, I guess depending on when this happens, like a top five available, an uncommitted portal prospect right now. So this is a real player that I'm very interested in and one that I think would immediately come in and start the four for KU. So that's a big deal on its own.
Starting point is 00:04:33 Can KU close the deal? Because he has interest from a lot of other teams, right? So can you close the deal on this visit to prevent him from going other places and committing elsewhere? And the same is true for Terrence Hill Jr. Hill Jr. We just did the deep dive on the other day. So again, check it out if you haven't already. This explosive guard who put up 15 points per game shoots 37 percent.
Starting point is 00:04:55 from three on almost 10 attempts per 40 minutes. 61% on 2's really good driver. And when he got to the free throw line took advantage, 84% with decent free throw attempt rate. The metrics liked him too. I mean, in looking at all the different guards that I have written down for potential point guard slash combo guard targets for KU, offensive winchairs per 40 minutes, again, that's just one metric and one random stat.
Starting point is 00:05:22 He is the leader among all of the. of the guards I've written down, which I don't know how many I've written down 30, 35, something like that. He's the leader in offensive winchairs per 40 among that group of like 35 potential point guard combo guard targets that I've looked at. His wins above replacement player is tied for the lead among any guard. The only player that he has the same amount of him that's tied is Leroy Blighton, who is a really interesting guard that I'm not sure Kansas is going to have. is going to be getting at this point or whatever, but just a really good player.
Starting point is 00:06:00 You even watch the filming the stepbacks, the 27 foot threes that he's hitting, the sauce that he's playing with, the entertainment that it is, the step back into a drive when when somebody, you know, defends the step back too well and then he turns it into a wide open layup because he drives right past you because you were expecting the step back. This kid is super skilled. He is the type of player that I think would, I mean, the thing. thing is like I do feel like and I know this hasn't always been the case for Kansas you think of like Nick Timberlake and stuff but I do feel like some of these smaller school guards have translated
Starting point is 00:06:35 up pretty well like you think of Walter Clayton going from Iona to Florida and what he did there with the Gators I think of all the Iowa state guards like think about all the guys that TJ has brought in there from smaller schools that turned out to be really good players for them I'm not scared at all by hit. Like Hill is the type of player that comes into me and like he could be a lean score on next year team and I would totally get it. So again, two huge visitors in town for Kansas. We'll see if they can close the deal. Finally get on the board at the very least get one of them so you can feel like you get momentum and there's a little bit of panic starting to weigh in on some Kansas fans, understandably so because you're seeing all these other players commit to other schools and you're not seeing it yet for
Starting point is 00:07:16 Kansas and you want to see that ball get rolling. So we'll see if they can kind of close the deal there. And then it also sounds like KU's going to be having some other upcoming visitors. Anton Bonk, according to Michael Swain with Fogg.net and 24-7 Sports is going to be visiting later this week. And Bonk, we just did a deep dive on as well. Very interesting center prospect. Now, as it's confident as I feel with Good and Hill, it's not that I feel not confident about Bonk's game. I like Bonk's game. He's just one that I have a big question mark on.
Starting point is 00:07:48 You could convince me that he is this sleeping job. giant and that he's going to have a great season for KU, you could convince me that he's going to be a bit out of his element. I see positives. I see negatives. I mean, the rebound rates are fantastic for a guy like Bonk. He also defends the rim well. He's gigantic. He's huge. He moves well for a seven foot two, 270 pound dude. So I think there's a lot to potentially like there. And I continue to go to the idea that, hey, if you need a little extra money to bring in Hill and good, and so you're bringing on Bonk to be able to do that as opposed to one of these other big names. And I continue. game centers like Aidan Cheryl or Sananda Fruh or Naji Heinz or one of these guys, you know,
Starting point is 00:08:26 or Mosaum or Jop or Chom or something like that, you know, is that the play to potentially do that? So at least a very interesting player and I love saying the last name and I like some of the skill set there. And then the other one kind of interesting, On 3 was reporting that Kansas and Kentucky have visits lined up for Alex Wilkins. Wilkins is a player that I think is flying under the radar a little bit here. He's one that I know some people are like planting their flag in. like national college basketball media people that I don't mean like the I don't know I think
Starting point is 00:08:58 I more so mean like the the in tune national college basketball media the people who are like writing really intelligent like blog posts and websites and stuff like that I don't mean like the talking head national media I think those are different types of things but anyway I've seen people like very very interested and this is a dude who had a huge game against Yukon in the NCAA tournament in the first round. Obviously, they didn't win the game, but they ended up playing closer than you would expect. 18 points per game for him. He averaged 4.7 assists per game.
Starting point is 00:09:28 So good passing numbers for Wilkins. He's not the most, I wouldn't call him like the most athletic guard in the world, but he's a 6-5 guard that has, I think, enough athleticism. He shot 55% on twos this year. The three-point shot still coming around 32%, but he did take a high volume of him. He's actually a very interesting player to me. And when I look at on-off numbers,
Starting point is 00:09:48 Furman was over 13 points better just on offense when he was on the floor. He would definitely be a take. If you could get Hill and Wilkins, I don't know if this is a ploy to, hey, let's get Wilkins in just in case Hill doesn't commit. But if you got both and now you've got Wilkins, Kinney, and Hill, as three guards playing a combo of 80 minutes between the one and two positions, that would be an incredible back court, I think, for Kansas. Now, there's also been some conflicting reports on Terrence Brown, the really quick guard for you to. Some have mentioned him being a possible visitor for KU. Other people have been predicting that he's going to end up at North Carolina and commit to North Carolina where he was visiting on Monday.
Starting point is 00:10:27 We'll see what happens there, but I guess just one to kind of watch. All right, Cole Rosario is officially back for KU, at least according to social media. We'll get to that next. Today's episode is brought to you by TurboTax. It is tax time, but for a lot of us, the old way of doing taxes is a lot. You can get the ad-free version of the show, locked on jhawks.com. Locked on jhawks.com. Okay, Cole Rosario is back. There was some reports
Starting point is 00:11:36 surfacing, and then he posted on social media. There was a post from KU, which was a really cool video. Anytime you get the interstellar music on there, I'm going to be all for it, and announcing that he was going to be coming back. Now, I say according to social media, because I'm like, we've seen this song and dance before where somebody says they're committed, and then all of a sudden you bring in a couple players at their position, and they're like, wait a minute, you know, but I do think the intent here is for Rosario to be back. And I'm excited for it, to be completely honest. I know year one did not go as, you know, everybody would have hoped for Col Rosario, right?
Starting point is 00:12:07 Because he comes in as this late edition. He has a very promising off season so much so that he's starting at the beginning of the season for Kansas as a true freshman coming in. And it just seemed like, you know, he, he wasn't ever comfortable off the bat. Like some of the threes who was missing was were really off, right? And it just feel like he never really got too comfortable. Well,
Starting point is 00:12:28 then all of a sudden, he falls out of the rotation entirely. And then by season's end, all of a sudden, he's counted upon in the second round of the NCAA tournament to come in and provide a spark. And he does provide a spark for Kansas in what was in your comeback over St. John's.
Starting point is 00:12:41 And, you know, had they been able to win that game, he would have been, you know, like, I don't know, the idea of getting him back would have,
Starting point is 00:12:48 like, he would have been a hero for that game for KU in certain ways, right? And so again, like the numbers in year one aren't great here. You're talking about him playing 11.6 minutes per game. You're talking about a fourth percentile free throw attempt rate, only shooting, you know, 29 percent on threes, though he did get up a very high volume of them. He did shoot very well on twos because they were all like dunks and easy layups in transition, right? But, you know, you're talking about third percentile defensive rebound rate, 21st percentile steel rate.
Starting point is 00:13:20 Again, it wasn't the best first year for Cole Rosario. But I think we all know he has the tools. He has the athleticism. We're talking over 40-inch vertical. You saw some fun highlight dunks. You saw the hustle and you saw the ability to crash the offense glass. A Kansas team that wasn't good at getting offensive rebounds, Cole was one of the bright spots there.
Starting point is 00:13:37 He actually wound up in the 92nd percentile in offensive rebound rate among guards. So, like, clearly was able to do that. And the role seems so clear to me, right? It's just make threes and get extra positions. possessions for KU. He actually was able to get extra possessions with offensive rebounds. I think what you're just looking for now is can you improve the defensive rebounds? Can you maybe get a little bit more, you know, a little more steals here or there and just be a better defender? And then the big one is this, because of Colrosario would have been hitting threes,
Starting point is 00:14:05 even at a 33% rate or even at a rate where it was inconsistent where, you know, one game he'd go three for four, the next game it was 0 for four, but then the next game it was two for three. can he hit threes at a rate that is sustainable to play? Because with him only shooting 28%, and that was with him hitting a couple at the end of the season there to boost that percentage, it became tough for Bill Self to say, hey, one of the skills or one of the key roles were asking you to come on the floor to do is to shoot the three and you're not doing it, right? But I think with another off season under his belt, getting more comfortable now, gaining more confidence, getting a bunch of shots up, he clearly has the athleticism. He clearly has the effort ability. He clearly has the hops. He clearly has the offensive rebounding ability.
Starting point is 00:14:52 And I think he clearly does have Bill Self's trust. Like, I know he fell out of the rotation over the second half of the season, but that was just because he wasn't, he couldn't find it at that point in the season. like Bilself gave him the starting nod to open up the season and seemed to really like what he was bringing in the off season. To me, I view Cole Rosario as a for sure in the rotation guy this upcoming season. Now, whether that turns into, I think the ideal situation for KU would almost be like, do you have a player in the starting lineup that is a veteran and is pretty good or something? And Rosario plays so well that he beats him out and earns a starting spot. Or the other side is Rosario is your sixth man or whatever. off the bench. He's given you good minutes. You feel like there was a big jump of improvement.
Starting point is 00:15:37 And then you feel like the following season when he's a junior, he's about to break out and be an all big 12 player or something. Like I think both of those are realistic past that you can hope for. And I do think it comes down a lot to what is kind of the three point shooting, right? And that's kind of the big one. Right. And there have been other players under Bill Self that, you know, struggled their first year from three and then got better at it. And that is typically one of those things. Like when I look at what improves for players from year to year, There's certain things, like, honestly, like rebounding, typically you are what you are. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:16:09 You might get a little bit better. I'm not saying you can't get any better at all. And obviously, there's always exceptions to the rule because there's, what, 350 teams in college basketball, each has 15 players. There's so many players. There's going to be exceptions to the role. But I think for the most part, when I look at players from year to year, I mostly see guys, the rebounding stays about the same. The shot blocking stays about the same. You know, the athleticism stays about the same.
Starting point is 00:16:35 The big ones are three-point shooting and consistency. Those are the two I know. Defense of awareness, I would say, or like team defense would be a big one too. You know, usually if you're good at getting steals, you will show that right away. The steals are something that I feel like gets better over time. But, you know, if you have really quick hands, like if you're a Marcus Garrett or Mario Chalmers, who is like an elite player at getting steals. that shows up right away.
Starting point is 00:17:03 I think Rosario can get better at steals, just not to the elite level, but like the defensive awareness, knowing where to be, being a better team defender, knowing the rotations, that gets better, the consistency gets better,
Starting point is 00:17:13 the three point shot gets better. And those are all things that I'm like, okay, if you add more defensive, you know, just familiarity for Rosario, you add a more consistent repertoire, you add better three point shooting,
Starting point is 00:17:27 he's going to be a really good player for KU. And it also is nice to at least have a little bit of recognition and somebody coming back for continuity underbell self. Now, as far as some examples of players improving their three-point shot, these are players that came in as a freshman and what they did in their second year. Russell Robinson came in, 28.6% from three. He shot 32% his second year. I do think Rosario profiles of somebody having a higher potential from three than Russ Robb did.
Starting point is 00:17:57 Elijah came in, Johnson, and shot 28% from three. he goes 40% from three his second year. Now, that one's a little bit cheating because Elijah didn't play a ton his freshman year. He's four of 14 from three, whereas Cole shot over 63 pointers. Svee went like 29% on three's low attempts, and then he shot 40% his second year. And that one again, a little different because Svee was like 16 years old. So like it's one thing to shoot 29% when you're 16 years old, you know, a little bit different situation there, right? But there was a, there's actually a couple of recent ones too.
Starting point is 00:18:28 Jamari McDowell and O'Marco Jackson, who obviously are now in the transfer portal, but Jamari, and there was a redshirt in between both of those guys. For Elmarco, it was injury. For Jamari, it was just a straight redshirt. Jamari went for 28% as a freshman to 35% as a sophomore. Lamarco Jackson went from 27% as a freshman to 37% as a sophomore, right? And there's several others who maybe it wasn't under 30%, like Wayne Selden was like low 30s to 36. Frank Mason was low 30s to, I forget if it was high 30s or 40 or something.
Starting point is 00:18:59 O'Chai was like 31 to 34. A lot of examples of players improving that shot from year one to year two. So Frasario gets that up to 33, 34. He becomes a super valuable piece for KU. And I think the outcome that I envision is him being part of the rotation and giving KU those hustle plays, being a very beloved player, both from the standpoint of like, there's not going to be a lot of returners. I think he'll be beloved because he'll make a lot of hustle plays, get a lot of
Starting point is 00:19:25 for possessions, hit some threes, be an exciting player, throws down dunks. I think there will be a lot of number seven jerseys in the crowd next year in outfield house. All right, let's continue on with some of the latest news. Samis Calderon picked a new school, some KU baseball updates as well. This is locked on Jayhawks. This episode of the show is brought to you by Fandul. The NBA playoffs are here where every possession matters, every matchup is magnified,
Starting point is 00:19:50 and every game can swing a series. Right now, Fan Duel is giving new customers a great way to get in on the action. you can bet just $5, get $250 in bonus bets if your first bet wins. The app makes it easy to follow the action. Like with player stats, trends, matchups all in one place, you can get futures who's going to win the series. Buy how many games? You know, do you think the Hawks, for instance, are going to stay hot as they have to end
Starting point is 00:20:15 the regular season or are the calves going to get by them and can the calves finally get past the second round with this core of players, you know? It just makes the entire playoff experience more engaging from start to finish. use the web's use uh... fandual.com to get started that is fan dual.com to get started fan dual play your game, the official sports with partner on the lockdown podcast network.
Starting point is 00:20:37 So Samis Calderon, former Jayhawk, has a new school. He's committed to the Butler Bulldogs. So he'll be going to the big east. Um, I, I think this will be a good spot for him. You know, new coach with Ronald Norred, who was on some of those championship runner up teams at Butler. Seems to be a smart guy. And Calderone, I think just needs to go somewhere.
Starting point is 00:20:56 he can get live game reps and play, right? Very, very athletic player that just needs, like, honestly, we talked about Anton Bonk, like he was somebody who was just kind of raw at the game of basketball and needed to get reps, did it Charlotte, and now boom, he's going to get like to a big school, you know? Maybe that's what Samis Calderon needs, right? Also, some KU baseball news. They come in ranked 19th by Baseball America, and 18th by D1Baseball.com after the big week that they just had where they were able to sweep UCF,
Starting point is 00:21:30 who previously was in first place of the Big 12. And obviously that'll do wonders for KU in terms of, you know, not just the Big 12 standings, but some of the other opportunities that they have is if they can keep winning, like who knows, could they get in a position to potentially host in the NCAA tournament? That would be really, really cool if they were able to, you know, accomplish that.
Starting point is 00:21:51 So big for them, they'll be against Wichita State on, Tuesday. So that'll be, you know, a five o'clock game. I think I saw KU's, I don't know when they say select beverages. Is that in, is that I talking, you know, adult beverages or are we just talking sodas or what, but $2 select beverages for the game on Tuesday. So that's going to be kind of a fun opportunity for the Wichita State game. And then that we have any three game set in Oklahoma down in Stillwater at Oklahoma State starting on Friday, looking to keep the good times rolling for KU baseball. Meanwhile, for KU softball, they just won a series two out of three. They're now sitting at 29 and 12 after the three-game series victory over the Baylor Bears. And they're going to be against Missouri. That'll be at Wednesday at 5 o'clock. So you can go see the border war between Kansas and Missouri at Arroca ballpark at 5 on Wednesday. And then they'll be off on the road at UCF, starting on Friday for a three-game set over there against,
Starting point is 00:22:49 I almost call them Central Florida. You know, whatever. I'm going to call them Central Florida this week. They'll be mad, but, you know, you make it work. All right. That'll do it for this episode of Lockdown, Jayhawks. We will have a bonus episode coming out as well, breaking down another transfer portal target with Mustafa Chalm.
Starting point is 00:23:05 Make sure to check that one out. Check out our Tarantile episode and all of our other episodes as well, right here with LOJ. See you next time.
