Starting point is 00:00:00 It's the big 12 opener for both Kansas and West Virginia. That's the same case the last couple of years that they met. And this one's pretty important. West Virginia coming off a pretty big win. Kansas coming off a loss to their rival. Can they bounce back? Which of these teams are going to win out? Because last couple years that Kansas played West Virginia,
Starting point is 00:00:17 it's determined whether they've made a bowl game or not. You are Locked on College Croslover, part of the Locked on podcast. Network. Your team every day. What's going on? Derek Johnson with Mountaineer Paul on this episode of Locked on Jayhawks, Locked on West Virginia. We got a crossover episode getting you ready for
Starting point is 00:00:45 KU against WVU coming up on Saturday at 5 o'clock. And again, thanks for making Locked on your first listen every day. You can check out some of our other shows as well. But thank you anywhere you're joining us, including on YouTube. Mountaineer, Paul, man, how's it going? doing good man i was i was dancing to the beat of that song for a minute you got a nice little hitting little song to come in here yeah man well uh it's gonna be dancing on saturday night
Starting point is 00:01:10 k u's got a blackout going on for the game they're gonna try to get you know out up for the game um it's one of those situations where for i'm really interested because when you look at the top like interesting storylines and stuff coming into me nothing um is a bigger question for me than how West Virginia is going to respond to last week because I think there's two ways you can look at it right you can look at it as what a comeback against Pittsburgh it's going to start a long run of momentum the other side is these are 18 to 22 year olds you have high can you can you get back up to that level against a Kansas team that is clearly making this game a priority a couple that was the fact that you've had two weeks to prepare
Starting point is 00:01:52 yeah I think it's a lot of little ticks in your favor right I started looking at this game before Pitt. I know they weren't, but I was. Started studying that Missouri film. You know, you guys really played well in the defensive line in that game. I felt like you guys are active up front. I think West Virginia, key questions on the offensive line up until now, even though they ran the ball okay against Pitt,
Starting point is 00:02:17 which is also a very athletic defensive front. It's going to be so interesting in this game, like you said, to see how they respond to that. just it was literally probably the biggest game we've had in 10 or 15 years at my own pitcher car stadium. So Rich Rodriguez cried after the game. Did you see the postgame stuff? Yeah. It was awesome to watch. Extremely emotional because it's an 18-year monkey off the back. And like you said, it could either drive us or it could either hold us back a week.
Starting point is 00:02:50 I mean, like Rich Rodger prepared us for this, we got 81 new players. We're going to slip. It's going to be, we're going to have tough times. I don't think we're anywhere near a fish product, but it's wild that we've already got a better signature win in year one with Richrod than we did in six years with Neil Brown. Yeah, yeah, no, that is crazy. Well, certainly this has been a close matchup when it was Neil Brown, and obviously it will be different now, but I think that's interesting too.
Starting point is 00:03:13 I mean, you go back really during the Lance Lightpole era. They played in 2021 at the end of the year. West Virginia won that one. That was the two and 10 Kansas team, but they kept the... You guys were starting to get better then. Yes, exactly. That was kind of the, they beat Texas a few games before, started to, and then you have the 2022 version where, you know, that Kansas team ends up coming in and winning an overtime.
Starting point is 00:03:34 And that Kansas team goes six and six. And so if they lose that game, they don't make a bowl game. You fast forward to last year, Kansas loses the West Virginia in a game where they're up 10, West Virginia comes back with four minutes to go and wins the game. And Kansas doesn't make a bowl game. They win five games. West Virginia makes a bowl game with six games. So I look at that.
Starting point is 00:03:54 And obviously the hope of both of these teams is that this one game is not going to be the difference of making a bowl. The hope with both these teams is going to be they're going to win enough games regardless of how this one goes. But it's hard for me not to look back at those and see how important this one individual game that was really in both cases in 2022 and 2024 kind of a coin flip, how it had an impact on both team seasons. And Daniel Hyshaw has been here through it all. Yes, he's been here every team. He's been the mainstay through it all, him and Nico Markiol have both been here for the ball. of this so that's almost like uh i made a joke with you a few weeks ago about peri ellis you know
Starting point is 00:04:30 it's kind of like that you know where it's like are they ever going to leave well high shall ever stop running hard as like you know that dude runs so hard but yeah this is going to be a fun matchup man uh i'm really interested to see how we respond i you know i have no way to predict it because i thought we were ready for ohio we weren't you know i oddly wasn't worried about Pitt because it's Pitt. Honestly, like we always played well in that game historically. But this one I'm worried about. I mean, I think you guys are a really good football team.
Starting point is 00:05:04 Obviously, Jalen Daniels has got a million years at Kansas, although year two in this system. Their problem, too. Yeah. So, you know, it's an interesting, I mean, I'm just glad it's not the coldly nicky system anymore. And this one's a little closer to that with where they went from last year. I'll say that a little stray. But, yeah, Andy Kodolnikian, obviously doing good things at Penn State and everything.
Starting point is 00:05:29 So one of those things that I think coming into this one, too, that's going to be interesting is the injury bug. Kansas went from being a team who had some injuries recently and has some guys that are playing through stuff. But their injuries are more kind of week to week. With West Virginia, those injuries that are season-long injuries for guys like Jeheme White, you know, that's obviously negative. Now, there is obviously a big boost for West Virginia, and this isn't really, I guess, injury. It's more of the eligibility stuff. but Jamory Robinson, he's going to be playing in this one. That seems to be the huge boost for the Mountaineers.
Starting point is 00:05:57 Oh, I'm so happy about it because this is a guy you pay over a million dollars to. This is the guy that the only reason we got him is because he had these issues. If he doesn't have these issues, he ends up at LSU. You know, he's that kind of pass rush. So, I mean, I'm just using those using an example. I don't know where he would have went. But, you know, third round grade on him coming out of last year at ETSA, six, five, two hundred and fifty pounds can really speed the power, a ton of pass rushing skill.
Starting point is 00:06:28 You know, he's an elite player. We don't add these kind of edge guys very often. And I would venture to say we're probably already one of the two or three best past rushing teams in the league. So you look through the first three games. I mean, we sat whole scene six times. You know, in week one, we had four sacks. Last week we had two. Should have had five.
Starting point is 00:06:52 But, I mean, Navarro is a slippery, slippery guy. Similarly, so is Jalen Daniels. Very quick. You know, it'll be interesting to see if he can avoid these guys because he's going to have, Zach Alley is the most defensive coordinator I've ever seen. Did you see, how much of the West Virginia did this game did you see? Did you see where he sit three blitzers into the A gap? No.
Starting point is 00:07:14 One after the other, lined up. Three guys hit the same gap. boom boom one after the other it was like a battery ram trying to hit the same hole i have never seen that and i was telling somebody on the phone that it called me i said you know because he was in hawaii couldn't watch the game i said dude i think i understand now why we paid this guy like one point five million dollars this is a crazy flip from from being the worst defense in the league to average allowing 12 points a game right now this defense is for real and you had a guy like jimori Robinson, I think it can carry us.
Starting point is 00:07:52 The defense travels, I think it can carry. Yeah, yeah, I could see this being kind of a low-key, lower-scoring game. Like, looking at Fandual, it has this as a 54-5-for-the-over-under. And I don't know, that feels like a lot of points for, you know, KU has enough front-sev. Yeah, that seems high, too. What's going on with that? Is there something that? I have no clue.
Starting point is 00:08:18 I mean, I'm assuming they're expecting some money to come in on West Virginia with that 11 a half. Well, you would think, but now it's ballooned up to, at least as a time of when we're recording this. Now it's 13 and a half. So that means the money is still coming in a cancer. You look at even like ESPNSP Plus and it has it closer to a seven point game. So it's almost like they've got to be what you said in the up. The energy, the overtime, the double, the buy week for you. It all stacks in your favor.
Starting point is 00:08:44 The only thing that gives me hope is, you know, You know how people just say, like, we're a really good shape. With Rich Rodriguez, we really aren't good. Like, he, you know, he places even more, like, if there's a word that could be more than an emphasis on something, he would do it because he feels like if we're not going to recruit five-star guys, then we have to be elite in the conditioning department. And hopefully that helps against you guys on the road.
Starting point is 00:09:11 But, you know, this is going to be a super tricky game. And then we got Utah next before, finally a bye week. Yeah, this is an important part of the season for us. And, you know, it's the conference opener, the stadium, the first big 12 game in the stadium, it's a blackout. And you don't think Vegas knows all that? They do. And every little tick that goes in your favor just bumps it up a half a point or something, you know? Yeah. Even then, though, that seems like a lot. It does. It seems like a lot for what's been a really close game the last couple of times. All right, let's get to some players that we think are going to have a very important day in this one between Kansas and West Virginia.
Starting point is 00:09:51 This episode of the show is brought to you by Mazda. Mazda crafts cars for those who do more than simply move. From footwork to breath work, athletes sweat all the details. Mazda brings the same intention to how we craft every model. You can feel Japanese craftsmanship in every detail from the metallic accents to available Napa leather upholstery. With all-wheel drive standard in every crossover SUV, you can drive with confidence, through almost any season. Like our players, we sweat every detail because when will you make every move count, impossible becomes irrelevant. Mazda, move and be moved. And this episode is also
Starting point is 00:10:29 going to be brought to you by DoorDash. It's almost the weekend, time to look back and crown this week's MVP on who delivered power by DoorDash. Just like you can win every Saturday with DoorDash streaks, saving more money every time you order, these players delivered when it mattered most. Let's break it down. For West Virginia, Niko Markiol delivered in a huge way. I mean, obviously, the overtime pass, the pass to get it to overtime, just clutch play after being benched in the game. When the pressure was on, Niko Markiol came through, no hesitation, no delay. And if you've been watching week after week, this performance wasn't necessarily a fluke. 93.45 football football hook is great in week one.
Starting point is 00:11:08 Nico Markeel is on a streak. And just like Nico Marquiole delivered for West Virginia, DoorDash delivers your Saturdays with DoorDash streaks where you can save every Saturday you order and stack it up all season and save up to $250, including $100 from DoorDash credits. Order this Saturday, keep the streak alive and fuel your game day only with DoorDash where the terms apply promo code through 1118. Thanks for joining us on Locked on Crossover. We got Locked on Jayhawks, Locked on West Virginia, Derek Johnson with Mountaineer. Paul goes by MP and you can also check out locked on college football get you ready for all of the weekly action for your second listen every day so uh mountain year paul we haven't talked about we're you know a dozen minutes into this show tre lathan becomes an interesting player i think
Starting point is 00:11:56 in this matchup uh because he is a former west virginia mountain year he's had a great start to the season for k u so far today i think he's going to be a really important player for k u in this one when you look at what rich rodriguez wants to do running the football i think he's going to have to side line to sideline. I think he's going to, I mean, coming off a good running game against Pitt, I think he's going to have a big game against his former team. Yeah, he's going to be motivated to do it. Obviously, you know, I interviewed his high school coach. The very first, when I ever started my channel, the very first episode I ever did was interviewing his and C.J. Donaldson, they played together in high school in Florida. I'm interviewing their coach,
Starting point is 00:12:33 Earl Sims. And learned a lot about Trang, really good guy, man. Really hard worker played wide receiver in high school, converted wide receiver to linebacker, which is what they did at West Virginia, great, great thing for him. He's still actually learning the position as of when he was at West Virginia. I'm sure he's acclimated a little bit better now. And he's a super athlete. I mean, he can really run. He can really move. At West Virginia, at times, you know, he would get a little over his skis as far as over pursuing. I'm sure once the game slows down for him and it probably has Kansas, a little, I'm sure he's got potential to be. an NFL type linebacker.
Starting point is 00:13:10 We talked in the offseason, and you weren't sure if he was going to start. So I'm really glad that it sounds like he's had this amazing year because he deserves it. He's a good player. He only did what was best for him, and that's all I care about. Well, you know, it's interesting. So Joseph Sip was an All-Mack linebacker at Bowling Green, and he hasn't played a game yet this season. He got hurt in fall camp.
Starting point is 00:13:32 It was kind of a neck-and-neck competition, and it was like, is SIP going to start? Is Lathen going to start? And I don't know if SIP will be available this week. It sounds like he's trending in the right direction, but it sounds like he might still not be available. But it's been huge what Lathen has done because their other starting linebacker was hurt for a little bit there. He's been awesome for KU. So I think he's going to be important today. Is there a player for you on West Virginia that you think has to have a big game for them to win this one on the road?
Starting point is 00:13:58 Yeah. Can I give you two? I think two. You know. So two guys. And one is Cam Bonn, who is an electric. wide receiver that came over from Jack State who had almost a thousand yards on 50 catches for him last year as a freshman, converted quarterback out of high school, and really, really been our best player on offense at times this year.
Starting point is 00:14:23 Runs a sub 4-440 extremely fast. The kind of guys you see Rich Rod really like, Pitt had to resort to holding him because he was just too, they kept going by him. So he's one of those guys where if you're even, he's leaving. And then obviously, I think Trey Edwards, the running back, who kind of came out of nowhere last week. Not for me. I've been studying them all offseason. That's all we have to do, Derek. You know that.
Starting point is 00:14:48 So, you know, he 6-2, 230 pounds, touches 21 miles an hour on the gun. So he's got burst. He's got speed. He's actually elusive at the line of scrimmage. And he really played well versus Pitt. Because when I looked at our PFF grades on the offensive line, we had several guys in the 50s and 60s. that game and he still had over 150 yards and three touchdowns because he broke all those those tackles at the line of scrimmage here's the comp he's a little like allie gordon
Starting point is 00:15:17 that's a good one he's that kind of player really yeah big taller running back and get going when he's got those big strides yeah lusive even though he's like he looks like he would only be a straight line but he's actually got some wiggle to him you would expect well that's i mean you lose jeheme white and it's like oh man that's a tough loss but i think even like phil Steele had it as the number one or number two running back room in the big 12 and um yes pick six previews had it as number one or number two so it's like it clearly there's more than just one guy if it's going to be the number one or number two running back room in the big 12 so um that's going to be tough to go up again i i think you know somebody else that
Starting point is 00:15:56 that i would say kind of scares me from west virginia in terms of what he could do this i mean obviously jimori robinson kind of coming back but uh what can you tell me about fred perry because I see on pro football focus, Perry as a safety has a 91 run defense grade. And Kansas did not have a good running game against Missouri. They could not run the football at all. They're going to want to get back to establishing that in this game. And so I look at a guy like Perry is coming from the safety position. Like could he be kind of a big X factor in how that goes for KU?
Starting point is 00:16:25 He was the best player they had on defense of Jacksonville State last year. He was another one of these Jacksonville State transfers that Rich Rod has brought over that helped bring that hard-edged culture that he likes to talk about. with him, and he's really carried that mantle. Absolutely, you know, at several points this year, has been our best player on defense. He plays the nickel spot, so he's always involved in the run game. He's an elite blitzer. He's got several sacks on the year as well.
Starting point is 00:16:51 He's a guy that is Zach Alley likes to bring off the edge to try to create pressure. He also likes to simulate pressure and back him back out and try to get people to throw picks that way. you know he can cover like he does everything right and there's a reason he was the first team you know all conference player last year at jack's day um you know so yeah and the one thing that worries me about him but it's also his superpower is he's like the kind of you know see those videos so-and-so killed a man like he's one of those kind of guys like he he has some plays on tape at Jacksonville State where I'm like, honestly, like, how did you not get suspended for that?
Starting point is 00:17:35 Like, he gets way overzealous, but it seems like they've toned it back a little bit because Zach Allen's defense kind of allows him to be a little bit more of himself, and he doesn't have to just take those chances when they come like he used to. So, yeah, he's an interesting guy. Okay. And then I would say, too, for the Kansas side of that, like Jalen Daniels to me, I mean, it's obviously the quarterback is always so important. But what you mentioned earlier, West Virginia has 13 sacks this season.
Starting point is 00:18:00 I mean, Andrew adding Jamori Robinson, the KU offensive line has kind of been hit or miss in pass blocking this year. They've had some good moments. They've had some times where it's like, oh, that series Jalen got hit too much. And so from that perspective, I think it's going to be Jalen's going to have to make a lot of action, whether it's a scramble, whether it's making movement in the pocket just to get somebody open. What do you think the game plan is going to be for that? Do you think it's going to be a quick passing game? what does the scheme look like normally when it's normal is it a quick passing game by trade or how does it work normally a lot of motion a lot of misdirection a lot of trying to dress things up and then all of a sudden you hit somebody 15 yards down the field on a crossing route or something like that they'll use a good amount of like receiver screens to try to get you to come up they do have much that's the thing this year they overhauled the receiver unit in the portal because they had to they lost all their guys And there are certain things they're maybe not as good at,
Starting point is 00:18:57 but there are certain things they're better at. And one of those is yard after catch. They really went out. I mean, you had Emmanuel Henderson, who was a former near five star running back in Alabama. He's playing receiver for KU. He's a burner on the outside. Cam Pickett got like all of his yards.
Starting point is 00:19:10 I see him. Catch against Ball State or at Ball State last year. So they've got some guys at receiver who are good yard after the catch. They'll do a lot of that misdirection, a lot of play action, a lot of scrambling. They throw it a lot more over the middle of the field this year than they were last year when it was the Jeff Grimes offense, which is much more up the alley of Andy Kodlnicki. So from that perspective, it's a little bit more like that.
Starting point is 00:19:30 But they try to be as diverse and multiple as they can. That's really interesting, man. Is there anybody that you would say can block it your warrior Robinson on a moon? Well, that's kind of the big question for me. Because so at right tackle, KU had Enrique Cruz, who was transferred from Syracuse, kind of rotating him with another guy. Both of them have been solid so far this year. Left tackle Calvin Clements is a former need.
Starting point is 00:19:53 year, four-star recruit, committed to Baylor, flipped to Kansas, local kid from Lawrence. This is third year in the program, got a little bit of playing time as a true freshman, and then as a richer freshman. Now's a Richard sophomore. He's the starter. Like, everybody was like, he's going to be the starter,
Starting point is 00:20:06 and he was all spring, he was all offseason, and he's the guy. He was solid in the first two games. He struggled against Missouri. I mean, you're talking about it's an athletic front. It is. It is. And you're playing a guy. He's not the SEC teams.
Starting point is 00:20:18 They're good. It is. Yeah, he was going up against a Georgia transfer who, you know, had a couple of stacks the week before. Or, yeah, it wasn't fun. But right now it doesn't get any easier this way. No, it doesn't. It's a 33 right now on provable focus.
Starting point is 00:20:30 So that is definitely a concern. How much can we grow up and be ready for this West Virginia front? But I want to talk more about like, how does West Virginia win the game? How does Kansas win the game? We'll get to that next. Today's episode of the show is brought to you by Monarch Money. Most people can't name all their financial accounts or even what they're worth, whether it's 401Ks, properties or investments.
Starting point is 00:20:51 And when you don't have the full picture, you can end up leaving money on the table. That's why there's Monarch money. It's an all-in-one personal finance tool that brings your entire financial life together in one clean, easy-to-use interface on your laptop or on your phone. Monarch's built for people with busy lives.
Starting point is 00:21:07 If you put off organizing your finances, Monarch's for you. Monarch does the heavy lifting just for you. You can link all your accounts in minutes, see clear data visuals, get smart categorization of your spending, and finally feel in control of your money without ever touching a spreadsheet.
Starting point is 00:21:22 I love the layout personally. There's a lot of different color coding and numbers. I'm not the smartest guy, but when I see a nice graph, when I see a nice colored graph, it makes it a lot easier for my simple brain to understand. So don't let the financial opportunity slip through the cracks. Use code locked on college at monarchmoney.com in your browser for half off your first year. That's 50% off your first year at monarchmoney.com with code locked on college. I'm out here, Paul.
Starting point is 00:21:48 Simple question here. West Virginia wins the game if they do what? That's a good question. It's a loaded question. I think West Virginia wins the game if they get 25 first downs. That's what Rich Rod wants in every single game. That's the goal is to get 25 first downs. They've gotten it in every game except one in the one game they didn't get it in. They lost to Ohio on the road. And again, you're trying to ingratiate 81 new guys. I think it's starting to click. We'll see. But, you know, I think West Virginia, they get 25 first downs that means that you kept your defense off the field because the thing, as you know, with these fast-based offenses, if you're going three and out, that means your defense is on the field a lot. And against an offense like Kansas that will run some ball control stuff, that could be bad, which is exactly what happened against Ohio. And we lost that time of possession, 40 to 20, which is just incredible. So that can't happen. You can't have your defense on the field for 80.
Starting point is 00:22:52 plays well you touched on the ball control thing and so for me kansas wins if yeah they're able to run the football and hold on the ball i just did an episode earlier this week talking about how kansas has really struggled against tempo in the lance light pole there of that um in the games basically since 2022 so not taking the first year just because you know they were two and ten whatever it's it's all going to look bad that year uh but since 2020 they're giving up basically two more touchdowns per game it's like 15 more points per game against teams who run top 30 tempo by like seconds per play. I think West Virginia's second right now in the country in that.
Starting point is 00:23:27 Yeah, that's a little scary. So can you hold on to the ball, give the defense rest? Now, I will say this KU defense is deeper. It's better than it has been personnel-wise in the past. It's also a different defensive coordinator this year than it was from 2021 to 2024. So maybe those things are different this year. Maybe they're changed better.
Starting point is 00:23:46 Plus, they're coming off a buy, so you have that extra time to prepare for it. All those things that help KU, but the best recipe to help, bit is yeah, you run the football, you have more success than you did against Missouri, you hold on to the ball, and you keep your defense as rested as possible. And then the other thing that I'm looking at is like, yeah, can you at least do a decent job at blocking West Virginia? Can you avoid those turnovers? Like, West Virginia has done a really good job at avoiding giving up explosive plays on defense. They're keeping everything in front of them. That means if you're Kansas, if you want to score, you're going to have to grind your
Starting point is 00:24:17 way down the field and you can't make mistakes kind of along the way. Now, we touch. on, do you have follow-up of that? Well, it's just weird because against Zach Alley's defense, it's so aggressive. In the past, he's talked about openly, like, that can be our kryptonite at times. We're susceptible to the big play because we blitz so much. But you're right, we have kept things in front of us. You know, so it's an odd, it's odd that we've been able to do that, considering what we do as a philosophy lends itself to the big play. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:50 So I think they're there, but we've just, we really upgraded too. I mean, you know, I'm not, I won't name the whole defense, but we went out and got two corners that are really good. Michael Coach Jr. is really good. It was an NFL player, in my opinion. Weird shout out from Mike Gold, Jr. when we signed him about him, which is just really random. He's like, yeah, he played against Notre Dame.
Starting point is 00:25:14 He shut down half the field. Like, okay, well, I guess he might be pretty good. Then if Mike Gold Jr. is talking about it. Yeah. Well, we talked about the spread a little earlier and how it was, you know, bigger than I think both of us thought. Talked about the total a little bit at 54 and a half. I'm going to be doing Fandall Friday coming up later this week on Friday. Any like players that you're looking at, like in terms of player props where you were like, hey, I think this guy could have a big game today. Grayson Barnes is a guy if you want a real secret guy that's really coming on strong. We signed him out of Northern Illinois. He's six.
Starting point is 00:25:50 He ran a 4-6 in camp. He can really run its tight-in spot. He had a really big fourth quarter against Pitt. He caught a huge pass to send it in overtime. Then he caught the jump ball to send it to overtime. And he's a guy that is a mismatch in the middle of the field. And I think Nico's starting to get comfortable with other options outside of Canvon, Canvon, Canvon, Canvon.
Starting point is 00:26:17 In our first game, it was literally Camvon, Canvon, Canvon, Canvon, Canvon. on Cambon. But it was it. Even though we have other players, it's just Nico is coming into his own. So I was to him and then, excuse me, if you ask me to give you one other one, I'll flip it over to the defensive side and say, you know, it's a pretty safe bet if you're betting, if you're trying to bet with like, let's say, tackles or TFLs or anything like that. I would say Jemori Robinson would be a pretty safe bet this week. um to get a couple tfls or something like that yeah he's going to come out of the gate hot that's for sure awesome man well uh fun preview in the game um tell everybody where they can find your work
