Starting point is 00:00:00 Sounds like Darren Peterson is going to give it a go against TCU, and this quickly became, I think, a must-win game in just the second Big 12 game of the season for KU basketball. You are Locked-on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Hey, what's going on? Derek Johnson here with Locked-on Jayhawks. Thanks for making it your first listen every day. And thank you the everydayers catching each and every episode of the show,
Starting point is 00:00:34 part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network. On today's episode of the show, we are previewing Kansas and TCU. We're getting to the TCU Scouting Report, players to watch, Kansas Keys to pulling out the game, why this is a must-win, in my opinion, for KU, you know what's silly as that sounds in the second game, Big 12 play, and what is going on? What's the latest in the Darren Peterson News cycle? I'll get to all that on today's episode of the show.
Starting point is 00:00:59 So let's start right there. Why is this a must-win game for KU? Because if we want to be like, if we want to be, well, actually, well, you know, if we want to be technicality guy, no, it is not a must-win game for KU in terms of like, okay, they could lose this game and win every game from you are now. But here's the thing. If you lose this game, you ain't winning every game from you are now. We detailed the roadmap. We detailed the path for KU. We said you probably got to go five and two or six and one in the first seven or, you know, seven games or whatever.
Starting point is 00:01:27 if you wanted to be like a top four seed in the Big 12, which A would correlate to giving you the best chance to have a good seed in March and give you a double buy in the Big 12 tournament, which obviously having extra games off with Darren Peterson's injury would be very important. Well, if you lose this one, you can't go six and one, you could go five and two, but are you going to win every game out if you've already lost at UCF and versus TCU? So this basically does become a must win for KU. You can't start O and two in Big 12 play. Bill Self has never started O and two in Big 12 play. I wonder if Kansas has ever been oh and two in conference play to start off a season. I'm sure it's happened at some point, but probably probably been a while, right? So maybe like Roy Williams' first year or something, who knows.
Starting point is 00:02:06 But this to me becomes a must-win game for KU. You're playing at home, take care of home court. You're playing a team who I actually think TCU has a good team, but it's still a game your favorite and you need to win, take care of things at home. Now, beyond that, this game becomes very important because you're also trying to continue to, I don't know, reintegrate Darren Peterson into the lineup who has been in and out of the lineup and has been in and out of the lineup just in specific games, not just from game to game. And so it's not just that you're trying to get Darren Peterson
Starting point is 00:02:37 right. It's not just that you're trying to have Darren Peterson finish a game. It's not just that you're trying to have Darren Peterson be fully healthy. It's that you're trying to have everybody react to him properly. Darren Peterson was unbelievable in the first half against UCF. He had 23 points in the first half. And yet Kansas found themselves down three because nobody else was doing anything. And I do think there's a level of when he hasn't been in there, the KU players almost like they know they have to go up a gear. And I think sometimes there are certain moments where some of the other players
Starting point is 00:03:09 when he's in there, it almost becomes a little bit more ball-watchy. And I think it just comes with the fact that they have played less games with Darren Peterson and knowing their role and meshing into what they need to do to play off that well, it's just been okay you start to figure it out and then all of a sudden you're playing a game without him right it's hard to figure that out so you need to start establishing that chemistry together and that becomes important in this one too that sounds like darren peterson's going to play there was a release of well let's start here so bill self had his press conference and kind of clarified some of the thoughts he had over the weekend which again we've talked about through this whole way like it's just very mixed messaging and very weird things like in and out like what exactly is going on
Starting point is 00:03:51 And we got another mixed message in this one, but probably more of the truth, I think, on this one. He said, playing him less in the first half is something we haven't done, but that possibly impact the second half. So, first of all, maybe we see him for eight minutes in the first half and then see him for more in the second half potentially. He goes on to say, I'll wait and see how he feels. He felt really, really, really good the other day. Then he later goes on to say, don't think for a second that he didn't play down the stretch because of minutes restriction. He didn't play down the stretch because his legs didn't allow him to do that. So hope like heck that it'll be better, but we don't quite have the formula yet.
Starting point is 00:04:27 So again, the minutes restriction thing was probably a conversation and something that he wanted to do. But the reason he wasn't in the game late was not because of the minutes restriction. He later goes on to say, and I think this about sums it up for all of us, long story short, I don't really know. And that is probably the best explanation of all of this that we could possibly get. Do you think would, would fans be more frustrated or less? Because it feels like, it feels like there's a good amount of frustration from the KU fan base with the handling of the, like, I think first of all, if you were just coming out, came out immediately and been like, he's going to be out a month. I think the fan base should be like, okay, well, wait the month. Sad, unfortunate, whatever.
Starting point is 00:05:09 Would they also, would the fan base also be happier if it was just a straight up from Bill's health? Yeah, this is a weird situation. I don't really know to be completely honest. Like, would that just be an honest response that people could get behind a little bit more? I have no idea. But anyway, so that happens. And then later he gets asked kind of a follow-up about, has there been any talk about him shutting it down? And this was tweeted out from Matt Tate of R1S1.
Starting point is 00:05:34 This is something he's going to have to deal with regardless of timing and all that stuff. So hopefully we can help him get his arms around that and deal with that. So again, there's more there. Now, later in the day, he had to release a injured. court, nobody on it for KU. He also said there was Hawk Talk, and this was tweeted out from Henry Greenstein and Lawrence Stern, the world, quote, there were no issues in practice from a health standpoint whatsoever.
Starting point is 00:05:59 So there you go. Darren Peterson's playing, right? Barring, the thing we always have to say now, barring a last minute setback in warmups of the TCU game, which I, you know, we saw Jaden Dawson and what can happen in warmups there. So barring a last minute setback, I'm expecting Darren to play. That's good for KU, right? But again, this all comes back to this.
Starting point is 00:06:19 KU needs to win, bounce back, to get to one-on-one, to avoid an O and two-hole, to beat a team you're supposed to, take care of business in Allen Fieldhouse, which is supposed to be your unbeatable place for people to come in. And you're also, I almost just ripped the cord out of the wall, so that's great. You're also supposed to start developing chemistry with Aaron Peterson and the other players. And that's something that Bill Self kind of brought up in the pregame. to this one as well. The idea that Melvin Council has his 20 points, you know, kind of after Peterson goes out. And it's like, you need all these guys to start cohesively bonding. And that
Starting point is 00:07:02 is the unfortunate part of Peterson missing the, the Towson and the Davidson and, you know, some of those buy games. I know it's easy to look at those and say, well, they don't need Darren Peterson, because they're going to win those games anyway. And they did. And they blew out those opponents. the reason you play those games isn't just to try to boost the record and boost your winning percentage and allow some of the younger players and the walk-on to get playing time. I mean, that's part of it. But the other part of it is to work some kinks out as a team. The other part of it is to develop the chemistry playing together in a lower stakes environment
Starting point is 00:07:37 where if you do make a mistake or if you do try something that doesn't work, that theoretically it's not going to cost you as much in a big game. and then you're better prepared for that big moment when it happens. So that's why it did matter missing those games. But again, with the injury situation, this isn't just as simple to say, you know, like, I guess theoretically, if sitting him does make him healthier, then it still is a good thing for KU.
Starting point is 00:08:01 But what we saw in the UCF game, it's like, well, he wasn't healthier at the end. So it'll be interesting too. And I do feel like we're going to see him for less in the first half. Like maybe you just say, hey, take him out at the, Let him play till the under 16 or whatever. Take him out, bring him back in at the under 12, set him again at the under eight, let him sit the rest of the first half or something,
Starting point is 00:08:22 and then let him play whatever he needs. I don't know what the right answer is here, right? Or are you better off balancing out the two minutes as part of the problem that you're overloading the minutes in one half of basketball and not giving it enough time in between? Who knows? This is your questions that better answered by a doctor and Bill Self and the people around it and everything like that.
Starting point is 00:08:39 But I guess it's good news at the very least that we're going to see him play. I think, obviously, the number one thing you want to see is Kansas win the game. The number two thing that everybody's going to want to see can Darren Peterson finish the game for KU. Let's get to our TCU scouting report as well as our players to watch and keys for Kansas win. What does TCU bring to the table in this one for Kansas and TCU and Allen Fieldhouse?
Starting point is 00:10:50 So the Hornfrogs are 11 and 3. Jamie Dixon, still the head coach there, who just a very solid coach in college basketball. They ranked 53rd on Ken Palm and 47th on Bart Torvik. Each site has TCU as a top 30 defense outside the top 90 offensively. and a very, very, very weird resume because you're talking about a team who has a four-point win over defending national champion Florida on a neutral site, beat Wisconsin by 11. Their last game, they just beat Baylor by six. Those are quality wins. They also had a four-point loss to Michigan, which, like, I'm not even joking when I say this.
Starting point is 00:11:30 A four-point loss to Michigan is legitimately a top five results in college basketball this year. Michigan is being, go look at Michigan schedule. They're beating everybody by 30, 40 points. Those are all great. At the same point in time, they lost an overtime to a Notre Dame team that we see it, saw Kansas handle without Darren Peterson. And they lost to New Orleans, who's not even in the top 200. Very weird resume.
Starting point is 00:11:52 I think the best way of putting it would be maybe they just play to their opponents, which means that, you know, they're going to play up a little bit in this game, right? Some of the strengths for TCU, the first one is rebounding. That seems to be a common theme with Jamie Dixon teams at, at TCU, 82nd percentile nationally in offensive rebound rate. That helps them be in the 81st percentile in second chance points per game. Always something you got to worry about against the horn frogs. They have athletes, guys who really crash the glass.
Starting point is 00:12:20 That's part of their go-to system. You got to be able to box out. And then they're in the 86th percentile in defensive rebound rates. They're going to make it hard for you to get offensive rebound, something KU is not really doing a ton of anyway, but that makes it even more difficult. Avoiding turnovers is another strength for the horn frogs. They're in the 76th percent. in turnover rate on offense.
Starting point is 00:12:38 So they're not giving it up. They're also doing a good job of getting assist to turnovers, 87th percentile in assist to turnover ratio. And what this means, these first two strengths, the rebounding and avoiding turnovers, that's doubling up on the possession game of college basketball. You're getting extra shots that your opponent is not getting. They're also really good scoring in transition,
Starting point is 00:13:00 which that's been a consistent theme under Jamie Dixon teams. I don't know that it's, I mean, it's 97th percentile. and fast break points per game, 17 per game. It's not quite as good as that like Mike Miles team from a couple of years ago. They were putting up like 20 transition points per game, but it's still really good. And when you tack on the strong transition defense, like they've been really good at preventing other teams from scoring in transition transition. They're basically a plus 10 every game in transition points per game.
Starting point is 00:13:25 That is a ginormous advantage coming into any game, right? A 10 point swing. They're also in the 89th percent on points off turnovers per game. So they do a good job of turning those turnovers into those fast break opportunities. The last one here is defensive disruption, and that's going to help them get out in transition 86th percentile in steel rate. They're in the 98th percentile block rate, which helps them have a 97th percentile defense at the rim. And you put it all together, their 98th percentile nationally, and heim rate, a mix of steel and block rate. So a very disruptive defense.
Starting point is 00:13:57 You put all these things together. You think of being disruptive defensively. You think of crashing the glass. You think of transition scoring. You think of a very athletic physical brand of basketball. You look at some of the weaknesses for TCU. They're not a big team, 329th nationally, in average height. And I put this on the weakness, but I'm sitting there like, is it, though, does it matter?
Starting point is 00:14:19 Like if they rebound great and they block a ton of shots, does it matter if they're not the tallest team? Because they do things that tall teams do, you know? Like, they might not be as tall as KU, but they're actually a better rebounding team than KU is. And they're right up with them and block shots. maybe you could say that the height pays off with like, I don't know, is there more success potentially that you could have in postups or some of these other stats that we're about to get to here? So here's our second weakness. In their five quad one plus quad two games, they're in the 43rd percentile in two point percentage offense. So maybe that's where it hurts
Starting point is 00:14:54 them, getting easy buckets inside, right? It also may be important to bring up that their rebound numbers have dropped a fair amount. If you just look at that, their five quad one plus quad two games. So again, maybe the height is coming into play there. And specifically, where I think you've seen it is at the rim. So they're in the 52nd percentile nationally and field goal percentage at the rim. So about average at it. But if you just look at the quad one plus two games against bigger opponents, theoretically,
Starting point is 00:15:22 39th percentile. So maybe that's where it kind of pays off. The third weakness here is not a good mid-range shooting team, which, you know, for some teams, like, they don't want to shoot mid-range. Like, they're very analytically based and they're trying to avoid them. TCU is not a team who shoots a ton of mid-range, but they're still above average at it in terms of the amount that they take. They're still about average to slightly above average. So the fact that they are taking them and they're only shooting 31% on mid-range shots this year, that's not very good.
Starting point is 00:15:49 And in those five quad one plus two games, they're down to 27.5% on two-point mid-range shots. The last one here for the weaknesses is defending the corner. So TCU is in the 14th percentile in preventing frequency of corner threes. meaning you're going to get a lot of shots up from the corner if you work the ball there. And teams have taken advantage. They're shooting 37% from the corner against this TCU defense, including 40% in those quad one plus quad two games. Now, players to watch in this one, we'll start with the Jayhawks.
Starting point is 00:16:19 I'm grouping this two-sum together, Flory Bedunga and Bryson Tiller. I guess realistically, like we all want to know, well, Darren Peterson make it through the game, right? And how effective will he be? But I want to focus on this for a second. Why Florida-Badone Gun Bryson-Tiller? I'm including these together because there's been too many games against Power 5 opponents when they've been outplayed, when they've been outdone by the other team's front line. I think that was kind of the case against UCF.
Starting point is 00:16:46 And that needs the stop. They need to stop moving forward consistently. There's going to be a game here there, but it needs to stop in this one. And beyond that, these two are going to have a huge factor in whether KU wins or loses when you look at what TCU is good at with the rebounding and blocking shots. and some of their interior pleasants. Check this out. So I wanted to look at, like, I was taking a look at some of the split stats for KU,
Starting point is 00:17:09 like Trey White's home and road three-point shooting splits. Like, that's a big one for KU. This is another big one. Flory Bedunga versus Bryson Tiller and KU wins versus losses. Obviously, if you lose a game, it's probably because some of your players played worse. So duh. But the vast valley, the vast nature of how different it has been for KU and Florey and Bryson play well versus.
Starting point is 00:17:32 when they don't is, it's a gigantic gap. So let's just start here. Florey is averaging over five more points per game individually in wins than losses. He's averaging more rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, on less fouls and shooting 10% better. Bryson Tiller individually is averaging three and a half more points in wins than losses, two more rebounds, 1.8 more blocks, more assists, more steals, shooting 49% on wins. Tiller's only shooting 30% in losses. But let's put them together.
Starting point is 00:18:02 If we combine Flory Bedunga and Bryson Tiller's stats, in the wins this season, Flory plus Tiller are averaging 25.3 points per game, 15.8 rebounds per game, two and a half assists, one steal, 4.6 blocks per game, and they're shooting 58% from the floor. Those are in wins. You compare that to the flip side. When KU is losing games, Flore Bidunga and Bryson Tiller have combined for 16.2 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game, 1.7 assists per game, half a steel per game, just two blocks per game, and the field goal percentage tanks down to 44%. So just to recap there, if you're calculating
Starting point is 00:18:43 the differentials here, compared to wins in losses, Tiller plus Flore combined are averaging 9.1 less points per game, 3.3 less rebounds per game, 0.8 less assists per game, half a steel less, 2.6 blocks less per game and shooting 14% worse from the field. Again, players play worse when you lose. But the difference between those is gigantic. Those guys need to play well if KU is going to hit their ceiling. The Darren Peterson stuff, that matters. The other players, how they play with Darren Peterson, is he going to be available? That's if all matters. Those two guys got to get it going and do it consistently if KU wants to be one of the better teams in the country. Our players watch for TCU, David Punch, he's a super unique player, six foot seven, two hundred
Starting point is 00:19:25 46 pounds, you would think more of a bowling ball center, 2.4 blocks per game. So springy athlete, he can play the four and the five for TCU, leads the team with 14 points per game, leads the team with 7.7 rebounds per game. He's also getting 1.4 steals per game. He's shooting 54 from the field, only 4 of 17 from three, so I guess he can take it if he's wide open, but not a huge part of his game. But nine straight games and double digits coming into this, including two of those with 20. And then the last guy here is Jaden Pierre. TCU is not the best three-point shooting team, but Pierre is. a excellent three-point shooter. He's a six-foot transfer guard from Providence, 10.6 points
Starting point is 00:20:01 per game, 41 and a half percent from three-point range. And that's on high volume. He's taking about four and a half threes per game. He is their biggest three-point shooting threat. And KU needs to do a good job marking him, especially when they didn't do a good enough job of marking some of the UCF guards last game. You got to mark Pierre because he's their best threat to going off from three-point range. Let's get to the Kansas Keys to the game, player matchup, Hawk to Soar, all that next. Thanks, you have for joining us here on Lockdown Jayhawks. Don't forget to check out all of our recent commitment episodes.
Starting point is 00:20:31 KU football has been doing work in the transfer portal, and they have a bunch of commits already. We've been doing individual bonus episodes on each players. So check that out on Lockdown Jayhawks anywhere you get a podcast or on our YouTube page. I finishing out this one, KUNTCU. Let's get started with our KU offensive key to the game. I think at first is hit your corner threes and your floaters, because both of those shots are going to be available for you.
Starting point is 00:20:54 So the corner one scares me a bit right now because Kansas is not shooting well from the corner from three this season. Trey White is three of ten. Bryson Tiller is one of ten. Jamarkey McDowell is one of five. Cole Rosario is one of five. Melvin Council's O of two from the corner. So those five players, White, Tiller, McDowell, Rosario, counsel, all I guess rotation players, you would say. Six of 32 combined on corner threes.
Starting point is 00:21:20 That number needs to go up in this game. That's usually supposed to be a good spot to shoot threes, right? And then the other one I would say, obviously, well, I mentioned the floaters. They give up a lot of floaters or shots in the paint. So it doesn't always have to be a floater, but those like six footers. And then avoid turnovers. And I think this is the key for both the offense and the defense is KU avoiding turnovers on offense because it's going to lead to runouts for a deadly transition team if you do.
Starting point is 00:21:45 So moving on to the KU defense, not just avoiding turnovers on offense as part of it. Just keep them out of transition in general. I don't know how possible that is. but the more you do that, the better off you're going to be. Clean the glass. TCU is 3 and 3 this season when they're held to a 32% offensive rebound rate or lower. They're 8 and 0 when they have a 33% offensive rebound rate or higher. So clean the glass.
Starting point is 00:22:08 And then the other thing here is defend Biggs cutting to the rim and rolling. This is something we talked about in the UCF game that KU's played a fair amount of teams that have like 70th percent higher in Biggs cutting to the run. rim and rolling. And those have been some of KU's worst defensive games of the season. TCU's in the 69th percentile there. So how do they handle that, right? And then just in general, like defending the big men, TCU is in the 87th percentile in post-up frequency. Then the 91st percentile in high-low frequency. All of these things, going back to the player matchup, going back to our players to watch, going back to Bryson Tiller and Florida Bedunga and their impact on this game,
Starting point is 00:22:47 they better come ready to play because TCU goes down low to the bigs. If Tiller and Florida you don't come ready to play, this might not be a pretty result for Kansas, but if they play like we know they can when they're at their ceiling, it's so fun to watch. So that'll be a big determining factor in this one. Our player matchup here, I don't know, we could go with Peterson versus somebody. We could go with those big matchups. We've talked a lot about it. Let's go with Brock Harding versus Melvin Council. So Harding is the TCU point guard. He's a transfer from Iowa, 8.8 points, 5.9 assists per game, 2.1 steals per game. He's kind of that that game manager type point guard who makes a lot of gritty hustle plays and stuff.
Starting point is 00:23:27 He's done a strong job for TCU so far, right? And counsel, I think, has the speed and athleticism advantage here, but he also needs to make life difficult on Harding. Again, Harding 5.9 assists per game. He wants to be the initiator of the offense. Can counsel make his life difficult that takes them a little bit out of their offense a little bit here? And then obviously, you want Melvin Counsel to have that scoring punch continued for
Starting point is 00:23:49 KU and can he provide that scoring punch? when Darren Peterson is also on the floor, right? Our Hawk to soar here, I'm going to go with two. One is going to be Melvin Council. So I mentioned earlier, TCU gives up a lot in that in the paint kind of floater range. Melvin Council by far leads Kansas in that area. Counsel has attempted 40 shots in that area. No one else has more than 17.
Starting point is 00:24:15 And counsel is done okay shooting. He's in the 58th percentile nationally in terms of field bowl percentage there. so it's slightly above average there. So he would be one. The other guy would be Trey White, right? I know it's three of ten from the corner from three, but he's the closest to having a good percentage from three, and he has one of the highest volumes from the corner from three.
Starting point is 00:24:34 I think he's somebody who could maybe hit a couple corner threes. I mentioned this coming into the UCF game, that Trey White so far this season has a very interesting home roads. I think I called it like Zeke Mayo Home Away splits. He's shooting 52% from three at home, 27% from three on the road. So, Trey White would be our other one there. Maybe it's even Darren Peterson just because, like,
Starting point is 00:24:55 is he going to be pissed off about everybody's, like, questioning him and he's going to go out there and put up 40? I'd love to see it.
