And on today's edition of the show,
we're going to be looking ahead to the 2025 to 2026 season,
what I think could be a very special team for Bill Self and KU,
led by a really talented incoming freshman in Darren Peterson.
So we're going to break down projected starting lineup,
what are they going to do in the offseason, those sorts of things on today's episode to get you primed as we're honestly two months away from the offseason.
Hopefully a full two months away,
and you're playing into April for this year's team.
Today's episode of the show is brought to you by GameTime. We can download the GameTime app, create an account,
and use code LOCKEDONCOLLEGE for $20 off your first purchase.
We're going to get into what players they have on the roster for next year,
at least possibly what decisions could be made,
starting five projection, bench projection here in this first segment. I do want to say at the
very least, like, I don't want this episode to come across as like, oh, you're not enjoying
this season. No, enjoy this season, especially after that big win over Iowa State and where it
could turn. But it's always Kansas basketball. You always have, you know, even if you're focused
on the here and now, even if your feet are in the here and now, you do have an eye to the future, especially when you have a kid like Darren Peterson committed
for next year. So enjoy this season. This is not me doing this episode to be like,
don't worry about this season. There's next season. No, enjoy this season. And no,
the next season could be pretty cool too. Okay. Anyway, who was on the roster for KU?
Let's start with the guards. Darren Peterson, who we just talked about, he is now the number two
player in the class on 24-7
sports and who knows maybe he's the most ready because the guy who's number one aj de bonza part
of that is those recruiting rankings it's overall pro career like it's overall basketball career so
when you look at the advantages de bonza has over peterson a lot of it might be like athletic based
and what he might do at the nba level you can make an argument peterson is you know most inclined to have the best season as a
freshman in college next season right maybe you would argue uh i forget which boozer brother is
the better one like there's some good possible recruits in next year's class but peterson is as
good as any of them he's as competitive as any of them and i fully trust that he's going to be one
of those special freshmen that you can build a team around i know that is very high praise and i am usually pumping the brakes on incoming
freshmen because i'm like listen there's a lot of freshmen that i mean the next guy on this list
el marco jackson like you know it wasn't sunshine and rainbows for el marco jackson in year one
kansas and he was in mcdonald's all-american it doesn't always work that way i feel very confident
in darren peterson but anyway you also go marco jackson and with pet, you get a guy who can play the one, the two, or the three.
He's got six 10-wing Spanish, six five, he can handle the ball.
With El Marco, you're probably more looking at him as a point guard.
He can be in there as a secondary ball handler.
And honestly, if El Marco, the big question is coming off the injury, right?
If El Marco is a good defender as he was before the injury,
and now you have more seasoning to you.
We're an even better defender.
That could be a fun little backcourt with El Marco and Peterson.
You have the unbelievable athleticism of El Marco Jackson.
You have the polished game of Darren Peterson.
You have El Marco's ability to help Peterson handle the ball where both can bring it up and initiate the offense.
You have the ability for El Marco to guard the opposing number one guard, which would allow Peterson to slide onto a two or a three or whatever it is.
I think that'd be a really cool backcourt if it works out.
Now, you also have Jamari McDowell in tow for the roster who's redshirting this year.
He'd be a redshirt sophomore for next year.
He's somebody who I think more of is like a two who could play the three
if you're going in an undersized lineup,
but like in a pinch could be like your third or fourth string point guard in a specific lineup but clearly there's room to add another guard or two
to this roster because you look at it Shaquille Moore would be graduating Zeke Mayo would be
graduating I know there's some of this floating stuff about you know fifth year players they can
be allowed to play that would certainly change things you know possibly with if you got another
year of Zeke Mayo it could possibly change things if the coit comes back for
another year because of the whole juco ruling light right like um you know so there's a couple
things that could add to this uh for ku in a hurry you look at the wing position for ku and this one
is the one where i there's some names on this list that we're about to get to that it's like
are all these guys going to be back probably not but they can come back come back. And again, same thing where it's like, well,
if you view Zeke as a wing since he's been playing a lot of three this year,
again, if they do that five-year thing, he'd be eligible for this.
But Rylan Griffin, who could potentially be a senior if he comes back,
which I think right now there are probably some KU fans that would understand
if Rylan transferred away because maybe he hasn't been starting as much,
playing as many minutes as he thought.
Like, I don't think it would shock people.
Then again, he just got in the starting lineup and, you know,
maybe things are trending in the right direction.
And I really hope Ryland Griffin comes back and, you know,
I wouldn't blame him if he did or didn't leave.
But like, I hope he comes back because I think he's a really good shooter
and can be really valuable.
I think with another year, you know, in Bill Self's system,
I think that trust level will come. and it might just be coming right now again he was in the
starting lineup on monday but i could see him having a big year uh in year two in the self
system if he did come back and then rickies pass more this is another one where it's like
you know i i think rickies pass more could turn into a really productive player for ku probably
jump to the gun and you know you know, I, like many other
people kind of thought that, okay, he'd show some stuff this year, maybe he'd be part of the rotation
and then year two, he'd break out. Now, maybe you push everything back. Maybe you say, okay,
can you crack the rotation in year two and then maybe break out in year three or year four? I
think that's the hope. The hope here is that he doesn't transfer somewhere else going, oh,
I'm going to be buried on the depth chart and i want immediate playing time right but that would be another one and then
aj store where he could come back for one more season it'd be a senior season at kansas in the
second year and again maybe he's making steps in the right direction after you know he had eight
points against iowa state off the bench based on aj store being at his third college being at his
seventh school since the start of his high
school days in seven years again I don't mean to condemn it maybe maybe it's different because I
know his girlfriend I think plays at KU um so maybe that makes things different and stuff and
and again like you hope these guys stick it out because Bill Self tends to do better when guys
are in the system for multiple years and um maybe in another year from now if you know you have a
different looking roster maybe AJ Storr fits it in a better way. I don't know. But he is a possibility to come back. And then you have Samis Calderon, who is an incoming freshman who may be a little bit more of a long wingspan, and the three-point percentage hasn't come around.
But again, in theory, he will be a good three-point shooter at some point, if you look at kind of the
stroke and the hope of what the archetype turns into. The big men for KU on the roster, you're
looking at Flory Badunga. And this is another question mark where it's like, could Flory go
pro? I know there was that one mock draft that was kind of circulating the Twitter sphere or the X
sphere, whatever you want to call it the other day.
And I don't know that I, I don't know what to think of that.
That guy had, I had never heard of that guy in my life.
Like no offense, like, you know, more power to you.
He's putting in work.
He's doing mock drafts.
Like, great.
He's probably never heard of me.
Right.
I don't mean to say it that way that that kind of came out wrong, but the point being
like, I don't know that that is like to be all end all that because this guy has floyd benunga in the first round that that's going to
happen i think the guys that i typically look at like i haven't really seen him popping up there
because i think a lot of them are assuming he's coming back for multiple years i think the
assumption when flory first came to kansas from you know his uh you know his his guardians to
bill self and everything was that he was going
to be here for multiple years now we've seen that happen before the plan was for johnny furphy to be
here multiple years and for grady dick to be here multiple years and then uh in the case of grady
after a couple games in the case of furphy you know by what late january or something like things
do change um i still am leaning toward expecting flory to come back, but yeah, I guess it is possible
that he would go off to the pros, but he would be in line for a star share of minutes and to
possibly be a superstar for KU next season, right? Hunter Dickinson graduates. That's a lot of
minutes. KJ Adams graduates. That's a lot of minutes to play it either. Then you have Zach
Clements who would be back for, I think, what, his fifth season at Kansas?
He'd be a redshirt senior at that point in time.
And, you know, we haven't really got to see what he's been able to do recently
because he's been injured and everything like that.
But, yeah.
And then you have Bryson Tiller who's practicing with the team right now.
He could kind of be a four-man.
He could kind of be a five-man.
And you could actually throw out some lineups with Clements next to Badunga because Clements can shoot it a little bit, at least in theory. Again, we haven't really
seen it statistically, but I think it's in there. Then Bryson Tiller can, again, shoot it a little
bit. Percentages have been more in the 20s for him in his career, but maybe he has all this time
off and kind of redshirting practice. Maybe he's going to be a 33% three-point shooter next year,
which would really help him play next to Flory
because he does have a good finesse game.
He can pass it a little bit, dribble a little bit.
You could play those guys next to each other at a 4-5
and have a couple guys with like 7-2 plus wingspans as part of that.
So if I'm projecting the starting five
and the bench rotation for next year's team,
here's where we start getting into the offseason a little bit.
I would say at the point guard spot,
I would say either El Marco or a portal guard.
The reason I'm saying or is this is one that's impossible to know for us because we don't know how El Marco is doing in his rehab from the injury.
We don't know what he's looking like, both in terms of when he does come back and he's playing and just Bill Self-Truck.
How does that work in terms of that being the case where does bill self see him and go
wow you're so much better than you were before the injury and now you're more experienced and got to
learn a little bit on the sideline or does he view hey i need to go out and get some star point guard
in the transfer portal so i would say an or on that i have peterson at the two but you know he'll
have plenty of possessions where he is initiating the offense um going with rylan griffin at the
three right that'd be huge to have a floor spacer like him,
a three-point shooter that you can play off of Darren Peterson.
At the four, I'll say if AJ Storr does come back,
I could see Storr starting at the four.
Otherwise, I think the probably most likely outcome here
is you go to the portal for this one.
You get a portal wing.
Now, the big question here is going to be what would Bill Self do
if he's bringing in somebody to be a starting four man would he go for more of the
big man type or would he go for more of a wing type or you know what i mean like you think of
a guy like harrison ingram a couple years ago he would have been perfect for this now right
um where he can kind of be a mix of the two but does he go for more of that six seven wing who
can shoot the three a little bit who maybe has to play up to a certain standpoint in terms of rebounding stuff or does he go for
somebody who is more of your six nine six ten big who can shoot it a little bit but is more of a
traditional big man i think that would be very interesting and then i would go with flory at
the five and then you're looking at the bench rotation there i think uh bryce tiller would be
your first big off the bench and you could play him at the four or the five get a minutes of both
i think the winner of the competition between rakees passmore and jamari mcdowell would be
one of your bench guards slash wings that gets you to a seven man rotation and then if you you're
either looking at if el marco is not starting then el marco is part of the rotation as as one of the
eight guys or if el marco is starting then maybe it's a portal addition to be like a
shooter off the bench.
And I think everybody else I'd be looking at spot minutes.
Now, there's so much time for that stuff to change, but that would be what I would go
with for now.
Okay, what areas do we think next year's team might struggle with?
Where could they be really good?
And what is the offseason to-do list?

All right, continuing on here, looking ahead to the 2025 to 2026 Jayhawks here
in what I think could be a pretty special team. And the reason why, as we get into what possible
strengths and questions could we have about next year's team right now and again, incomplete
roster. So it's hard to totally tell. But when I look at the strengths of next year's team,
the biggest thing that sticks out to me is the length of possibly next year's team so uh you look at marco jackson
i i don't know that he ever had an official like measured wingspan but i've always felt like
marco has uh at least a plus wingspan he's he i i mean he's listed at six three i think it's
probably safe to assume he's got at least a six'5", 6'6", wingspan, which is good for a point guard, right? You look at Rylan Griffin. I don't know. Let's say he has
a plus wingspan. He's listed at 6'6". Let's say his wingspan is 6'7", 6'8", right? Then you have
Darren Peterson, who did measure with a 6'10", wingspan, which is very good. You have Floyd
Badunga, who measured with a 7'2", wingspan, and he jumps out of the gym. Samis Calderon has measured with a 7'2 wingspan as the young freshman.
Bryce Tiller, Bryson Tiller, has measured as a – I think I said Bryce a couple times.
Apologies for that.
Bryson Tiller has measured a 7'3 wingspan.
And, you know, you just look at what they have.
I mean, who knows what else they would add in the portal and everything.
Like, this team is long.
This team is lengthy.
And I think it can be really fun defensively because of that, right?
And when you look at the defensive side of the ball, too,
like, it's not just that you're lengthy and you're just big
and you have, like, Zach Eadie down there or something like that.
It's that you're long and lengthy and you're five-man's flurry
who can also run with other guys out there
so like that is really exciting and that brings me to the next big strike i feel like defensive
versatility and switchability um because when you have length that helps you make up for a lot of
things on the defensive end but beyond that like flory is very switchable for a college center you
know what i mean right now we're seeing him play the four and there are certain times where he's
not switchable like that's been a big difference in in KJ Adams and Flory Badunga.
Flory has been probably the better rim protector for KU.
KJ has been better switching one through five so far this season for KU.
And that'll be something Flory probably gets better in another year.
But in another year, I think Flory will be playing more five
as opposed to right now he's playing a lot of four.
And so there's a difference in being a switchable five man versus being a switchable four man if that makes sense um being a switchable five man
just means every so often you might have to you know get out on a guy but realistically you're
only switching one through four it helps you with adding ball screens because you have this guy who
can sprint up and down the court there's just a lot of positives there um and honestly like you
could even use if he does become even more
switchable there with another offseason you know if you have a lineup with flory and tiller you
have tiller's length at 7-3 that you could use him as the traditional defensive center and use
flory as just this roamer as the foreman that is uh blocking shots and and all this sort of things
and then you look at it too you'd probably be playing a lot of two wings basketball which means
even more length and then el marco was a good defender before the injury. Peterson has good length and he's so competitive that I feel like he'll, you know, I don't think he's going to be a bad defender. Like he'll probably be a pretty good defender too. So I think the defensive versatility and switchability of next year's team is going to be good. And you look at this year's team right now, their top five defense. So you could say, you know, are they really going to be better than this year's team on that? I don't know if like the overall stuff, but I do think they will be more
matchup prone. I guess if that makes sense next year, like you look at this year's team,
they've been a really good defense, but if you have the right team that can really pace it and
space it and put Hunter in a bunch of ball screens and raise the line and do all these sort of
things, you can give them a little bit more trouble, right?
I look at next year's team and I'm like, I think regardless of what you throw,
you want to play big ball?
Well, Kansas has all this length and they can throw out two big basketball
with Flory next to Tiller, throwing Calderon at the three,
even if you want three guys with seven-foot-plus wingspans in there at once, right?
If you want to play a pace and space game,
then Kansas can play a game next year where they have, you know,
two wings out there with El Marco and Darren Peterson
and Flory at the five, right?
So I think they'd be a little bit more matchup prone.
The other big strength here is I think they'd have a go-to scoring option.
I think you do have a go-to scoring option on this year's team.
It is Hunter Dickinson, right?
And I think Zeke Mayles from the perimeter.
It's been, you know, at home very apparent that like that is the case um but
like i i guess i i don't have any questions about that like to me it'd be darren peterson uh for
next year like i'm so on a high end i mean honestly it's kind of scaring me how high i am
on darren peterson because i don't want to be let down. But I think that'd be a really lethal combo to have Flory being able to be a rim threat.
And then you have Darren Peterson kind of operating and Ryland Griffin on the side
hitting threes.
I would just love that kind of three-man combo.
Biggest questions I would have going into next year's team, though,
honestly, shooting is going to be one of them coming into the year.
Now, this is one of those coming into the year now this is
one of those where i look at and say when you look at the offseason things that ku needs to
accomplish right whether it's adding a point guard whether it's adding a wing a four man whatever
i look at it and say which of those players can shoot because this is something you can get in
the portal and i don't think they've emphasized it enough now they did with rylan griffin they
tried to with nick timberlake but typically it's just like okay you're bringing in one right um
sometimes freshmen struggle in terms of three-point shooting so like what if peterson
has a really good year but he's only 32 from three and if that's the case you know marco
jackson's far from being a knockdown shooter right now calderon and tiller are both sub you know 30
three-point shooters on
lower volume at their previous stops. Flory's obviously a non-shooter. Passmore and Clements,
I think have both heard the phrase shooting potential around their careers, but have yet
to actualize it yet. I think a lot would kind of ride on you bringing back Rylan Griffin,
making sure he comes back and having that three-point shooting and then finding other portal shooters because otherwise there are some real
questions about the shooting on next year's team uh will they have enough big man offense right
i mean uh hunter has been unbelievable at scoring in the post for you i think they will because
um if they do find a way to get better spacing then it'll open up more driving lanes and uh
that'll make it easier to score on the inside
in different areas than you're doing now plus even if flory isn't hunter um with his finesse game
bill self has been so good at getting those those easy buckets for powerful guys too throughout his
career like you think of like a thomas robinson for instance that i think that would be more of
the way that flory scores plus i do like till like Tiller's offensive game, but that definitely won't all be a guarantee.
And do you go back to where you were during the Jalen Wilson, Kevin McCuller year where
you didn't really have that post-up scoring option that made you want to go out and get
100 against?
And that would certainly be a question there.
And then the last one here, depending on the four man, how's the rebounding going to be? You know, Hunter has been an excellent defensive rebounder for you
in his time at Kansas floor. He's been a good rebounder. He's been a really good offensive
rebounder, but there've been times where, you know, he is, he's been beaten on the defensive
end of the glass and given up some offensive rebounds. He also has been in foul trouble.
Like what happens if that's the case? And then do you have enough else rebounding,
especially if you go for the four position to be a wing that would be the other big question here
especially if if you do bring back storing griffin and those are your three and four men because i
don't think either one of those is necessarily great rebounders i do think it helps that you
know um you've seen a lot of other good years where kansas had good rebounding years it's not
just the center right that certainly helps And that's the biggest focal point.
But like where they've had guards who you think like Frank Mason getting maybe five
rebounds per game or something like that.
And I view Darren Peterson as being that where like Darren Peterson can get you four, five,
six rebounds a night, right?
To where that can help alleviate some of that question, though.
But that I think is a question based on how you fill out the rest of the roster.
All right.
What do you look for in the offseason?
We're going to answer that question next.

Finishing things up on this episode of the show,
what is the off-season to-do list after this year for KU basketball headed into next season?
So going back to what you possibly be looking at,
I definitely think you'd be looking to add a guard who can handle the ball
and score the ball and be able to shoot threes at a high level. Now, maybe you have that on the roster. Do you consider Diggy Coy if he's able to get another year from the Juco stuff, which I would assume he'll be able to? He want to come back. Is he ready to go start pro career? Like, right. There's questions there.
Would he with another year under Bill South be an even better player?
And would the combo of having his offense, El Marco's defense be enough for you at that position where you wouldn't need to go out and get somebody else?
Or do you go out and get one of the top point guards on the market?
You know, and what does that kind of look like?
I think you want somebody who has
a good three-point shooter going back to the conversation about uh are they going to have
enough shooting right i think you want that guy to be able to be a scorer and uh kind of get back
to the the game of when we've seen scoring point guards do so well with bill self you certainly
are going to need a wing and you might need wings and part of that is going to depend on what
happens with your current wings aj store rylan griffin rickies pass more right if all of them improve maybe you only need like
one other for depth maybe you don't need any others right at that point in time um but you
definitely need a power wing who can play the four i think rebound a little bit shoot threes
at at least a solid rate like getting up you know two or three a game at the very least
on a decent percentage it'd be ideal if it's even more than that.
But especially if one of those leaves, then yeah, I think that might be the –
like if you gave me the option between saying do you want –
let's say you can get the number one point guard in the transfer portal class,
whoever that ends up being, or the number one foreman who's like a wing-type foreman,
I would take the wing-type foreman.
I just love the uh
matchup nightmares that creates for for other teams that would be my choice of the two but
i don't think you go wrong if you can get you know the best at either one uh the the big
interesting one for me to see what they end up doing will be do they go for a backup big man
because the backup center specifically because you could view tiller and say okay we can get
a minute to the four and the five right um how do you feel about zach clements does he stick around another year and then
furthermore the idea with flory right you don't want to get a big man that comes in and plays
over flory and i don't think that would be the case and i think flory is going to be a star if
he comes back next year that i don't think the guy would beat him out anyway but knowing that flory
has had a proclivity to you know foul in certain games and
get in foul trouble which that's not that non-exclusive to freshman big men anyway so like
you'll probably get better at it next year but you want more insurance in case that does happen
next year now maybe you feel covered if clements comes back and tell her and you say hey those are
the three guys you can have the five but we've seen this year clements got hurt and then who's
your other guy so maybe you can go out there and get a a targ black type right
a guy who can be a veteran center who you know can come in if he plays 15 minutes if he plays
20 minutes whatever it is he can be a vet he can be another body for you i think that would make a
lot of sense for ku to bring uh one more and then yeah if you're just filling out the rest of the
roster like shooters and scorers to come in the bench and fill out the lineup and give you more scoring punch if you need it.
