This is a bonus episode for Tuesday.
We didn't have a show Monday, so doubling down on our Tuesday here.
And David Coit was officially added to the roster,
whatever you want to say, announced that he was going to be joining KU
as a transfer from Northern Illinois after averaging over 20 points per game
a season ago.
We talked a little bit about that if you caught that bonus episode
from Friday night.
On this episode, we're going to get a little bit more into some of his synergy numbers some of what he brings to the table more
and how it could affect kayu's rotation this upcoming season today's episode of the show is
brought to you by fan duel sportsbook make every moment more as the playoffs wind down the sports
stop sporting like we want them to but this summer fan duel is hooking up all customers with a boost or a bonus daily.
That's right.

Okay, so what is KU adding with David Coyt?
Again, if you check that bonus episode from Friday out already,
you would already have a head start on this and some of the info David Coyt,
but I'm going to add a little bit more to what he is bringing to the table to KU.
So he is a Spitfire 5'11", score first, lightning bug type guard,
good quickness, can get his own shot.
I think his nickname, I think he goes by Diggy, is a nickname,
which that's kind of cool, is a Diggy Coit.
I'm not sure what the reason for the nickname is, but I like it.
He averaged 21 points per game almost at Northern Illinois this past season,
which was his second year with the Huskies in the MAAC.
He was all third team MAAC both seasons he was with Northern Illinois.
That was after he transferred over from the junior college level.
He will be a senior this year.
This will be his final season of play. So in two seasons with the Huskies, he averaged around eight three-point attempts per game and shot over 35% from three. That's
the biggest thing that I kind of look at here. He hits shots. He hits threes off the dribble.
He ranked in the 75th percentile nationally in the off the dribble
shooting. He shoots them in isolation, makes them in isolation. He shoots and hits them off the
catch. He does it off movement. He does it in step backs. He does it from deep. He made 17 three
pointers of more than 25 feet this past season. That's something we talked about earlier this
offseason that it's not just that Kansas improved their three-point shooting
and their efficiency and their volume.
It's that they improved the amount of guys that can open up floor spacing
that have gravity to them that can hit threes from deep.
And obviously you don't want to be taking all your threes from deep,
but the advantage of that is, A, sometimes the best way, like if a team's guarding you well from three
sometimes they might not guard you if you step three feet back of where you were and you might
get a more open three that's actually a better look there other times if you're just hitting
threes or at least showing that they have to respect you when you're 25 26 27 feet away from
the three-point line that they can't just keep their heels on the three-point line.
They have to come out to you.
What does that do?
Creates more gravity to you,
creates more spacing for everybody else on the floor.
So it's not the most important thing,
but it is still have a level of importance.
And that's something that Zeke Mayo does.
That's, you know, something that David Coit has been able to do.
Like pretty much that's something that Ryland Griffin does, right?
So that's something you continue to add.
Coit also ranked in the 78th percentile in pick and roll. He rated in the 88th percentile in isolation.
He rated in the 67th percentile with his jump shot,
and he rated in the 91st percentile on dribble jumpers.
So very good score, very good offensive player.
He did only rank in the 33rd percentile in catch and shoot jumpers. So very good score, very good offensive player. He did only rank in the
33rd percentile in catch and shoot jumpers, which, you know, at Kansas, he might be doing that a
little bit more than the ISO ball. Like he'd still do a little bit of it, but maybe more catch and
shoot. So that'll be something to keep an eye on. Could just be a weird quirk that he was the guy
at Northern Illinois and it was a lower volume and you know that wasn't something
he was asked to do as much so obviously maybe you're not practicing that as much I'd imagine
that'll get better this year at Kansas so he can just kind of use his quick step and the gravity
of his three-point shot that's what I was really impressed with I mean obviously the three-point
shooting to me and the variety of how he can get shots off is the most prominent thing here but I
was impressed that he was able to use that.
He was able to counter off that when teams overemphasized his three-point gravity.
He actually finished 59% at the rim last season.
Obviously, against bigger, more athletic competition in the Big 12, he's 5'11".
That number's probably going to drop, but wherever it drops to,
there's enough cushion there that it could still be good that he has enough craft with his layup package so the way I just view this is you're
adding a really good score to the mix he did have a 20% assist rate that would have actually ranked
third on KU last season only behind DeJuan Harris who was closer to 30 Kevin McCuller was at like
23 24 so you added to what was already a a strength and he does add more passing to the
team as well. Low key, he actually registered a 63rd percentile defensive rating on Synergy.
So despite the fact that Northern Illinois was really bad on defense, not good as a team,
they ranked in the 300s on the defensive end of the court on Ken Palm. They lost almost double
the games that they won. He actually ranked above average on synergy in terms of his defense. So it hasn't always translated to winning
some of the numbers and the scoring. And part of that I'd imagine has to do with, I don't know,
maybe not having the best shot selection. Maybe there are more questions about the defense than
the synergy numbers indicate because he's five foot 11. But I don't know,
like maybe part of that is just the rest of the team around him is just bad.
Like if he was third team all Mac back-to-back seasons,
does that just kind of indicate that like he was a top 15 player in the
conference?
And if you have a top 15 player in the conference and you've just like not
won a ton of games that kind of indicates it's not really his fault.
I don't know.
Like they were a bad rebounding team.
Like that's not his fault.
He's a five foot 11 point guard.
You know what I mean?
And the rest of the team shot closer to like 31% from three.
So like without him,
they were not a good three point shooting team.
So maybe it was just everybody else and not to worry too much about kind of
the win loss record there.
All right.
Let's talk about the players.
This could have the biggest impact on in terms of minutes battles in the
rotation,
stuff like that.
And we'll get to my new minutes projections coming up on this episode of Locked on Jayhawks.
Thanks for joining us today on Locked on Jayhawks.
And this episode is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook.
I love sports.

And the sports aren't sporting like you want them to.
But FanDuel lets me keep the sports going whenever I want.
All I have to do is open the app and dream up bets anytime I'm in the mood.
It was great during the Olympics.
You still got baseball going on right now.
You know, Bobby Witt just hitting like a madman at home.
So, you know, you can bet on that to hit two plus hits or hit a home run when they're playing at home.
Or if you want to do it on the road as well.
Royals obviously killing it.
You can get futures in for the NFL season.
You want to bet on preseason football, you can do that.

Continuing on with Locked On Jayhawks,
and don't forget you can check out our first episode for today as well,
which was an early preview of the KU Lindenwood game,
which is coming up here in two weeks from this upcoming Thursday.
Early preview of the KU Illinois game,
and we got to a defensive end room conversation for KU football on that
earlier episode.
And then later this week,
we're going to get to some more previews of KU games,
KU UNLV,
KU West Virginia.
We've got our receiver room preview coming up.
We've got KU TCU,
KU Arizona state,
the tight end room preview,
a lot more content,
stocks up, stocks down on
players during fall camp so far. So a lot to get to and make sure you're subscribed and tuning in
to the show. Okay. So KU adding David Coit. Now we kind of talked about this on the episode on
Friday night. So again, thank you to the everydayers if you tuned into this already, but
basically the range of outcomes for what David Coit could provide
is that let's say he comes in and his offense is just unstoppable and Bill Self just views him as,
yeah, you know what? I think this guy might be a little bit better than the other guys we brought
in, Shaquille Moore and Zeke Mayo. Then at that point, your ceiling of what you're playing,
if you're David Coit, you could be playing, be playing i don't know 20 22 minutes per game something like that would kind of be the the
ultimate ceiling outcome and that would be he comes in and just wows the staff i think the
floor outcome is that you're not really playing that you're buried on the depth chart but you're
a really important practice player i mean to have a player like this in practice just in general
that can help with scouting reports of when you're playing these other guards, like an LJ
Cryer or whatever, these other smaller guards who can really go off, I think that's going to
really help KU in practice. And the floor outcome is that, and he's playing spot minutes, and it's
maybe not a night in, night out. I'm getting 15 minutes every night, but it's like, oh, this night,
you know, I hit my first two threes, so I got more minutes and I ended up playing 18 minutes this night.
But then the next game I started over two and I only played seven minutes.
We see that all the time with certain Bill Self players.
I mentioned the Jalen Coleman lands role.
I think that's kind of what the floor and then the medium ground is that like,
what if he beats out one of two of Zeke Mayo or Shaquille Moore?
Or what if he just is close enough to those guys and Bill Self,
instead of wanting to play rickies past
four minutes opts to play more like three guard lineups where zeke mayo is even at a three and
store griffins at the four or something like that and then he's playing 10 12 minutes a night right
that's kind of the middle outcome there for what you're looking at but um either way so as we kind
of went over some players there that kind of give you the indication the players that this could have the biggest impact on in terms of minutes or just having to battle their
way for a rotation spot or earn their playing time in a very real way I mean the obvious ones are
Zeke Mayo and Shaquille Moore David Coyd is 5 foot 11 he's going to play at the one if he's playing
at the two it would be a smaller lineup for KU. That's for sure.
Now, there are certain teams you can play that against
because they play that same way.
Like, I bring up Houston.
Last year you were playing Houston, and they had, what, like 6-1 in Shedd,
something like that, 6-1, 6-2.
LJ Cryer, like, around there, 6-2.
Emmanuel Sharp, like, maybe 6-3, 6-4, something like that.
So, like, you can get away with. If you're Kansas where you have,
Oh,
Dwan Harris was like six,
one with a good wingspan.
Um,
David Coit,
five foot 11.
And then you're playing a,
a six foot four Zeke Mayo at the three,
or you're playing a six foot six Rylan Griffin at three,
right?
You can,
you can play that in certain ways,
but still,
um,
there's minutes to be had at the backup point guard spot,
right?
Dwan Harris could play 30 minutes.
It could be 32.
It could be 35, 36.
I don't know.
Whatever amount of minutes ends up being available behind him,
those are available for one of those guys, Coit, Mayo, and more.
And maybe it ends up being split between two guys, right?
Maybe DeJuan plays 34 minutes per game,
and you have three minutes divvied to Zeke Mayo
and three minutes to Shaquille Moore,
three minutes to David Coit and three minutes to Zeke, whatever it ends
up being, right?
So you have a little bit of minutes available there.
At the two, probably going to be starting Ryland Griffin at the two, but he could play
some three, he could play some two.
There's going to be a lot of minutes available at the two.
And so you look at all those guys, they're going to be playing those minutes at the one
and the two, or they're in competition for those minutes. And so I think both of those guys, it's going to be
important for them to show out, you know, as we continue to get closer to the season to try to
fend off any fight from David Coy. I do think that if you're David Coy, and he kind of talked
about this, I saw some good quotes. You can check it out on fog.net. Michael Swing did a good piece kind of interviewing him and talking to him.
And he kind of sounded or gosh, I don't even remember if it was Michael.
It was somebody with 24 seven sports.
I guess I just assume put two and two together.
But anyway, he kind of talked about the idea of like, I don't know, like earning everything
on his way to get up and that he's had to,
because he went from Juco to Northern Illinois to now Kansas.
And you got the sense in some of the quotes too,
that he very much like is a team player and we'll do whatever it takes.
And like that he talked about, yeah, he, you know,
Bill Self was very upfront with me with what the role would be and everything
like that.
And he didn't really get into what specifically that role would be,
but I'm sure if you're Bill Self, you're telling him like, Hey,
we're going to give you a chance to compete.
Like if you were just better, beat out you know these guys Killmore
Zeke Mayo or Keith Pass whoever like we'll get you playing time we'll let you play but I'm gonna
be honest to you too like if those guys beat you out or like we have a lot of good players here we
have a lot of good competition like there's a chance that you might be playing spot minutes
there's a chance that you you might just be that veteran guy who like Jalen Coleman lands did, you know, helps us win a title
or do a lot of big things, but you're not necessarily playing 30 minutes a night.
And if you're David Coy, you know, he's not showing up on an NBA draft boards. He's five
foot 11. Now, obviously he has enough production at the collegiate level that would make you think
that he can play overseas or something like that once he's done with college and, you know,
certainly make some money that way. But if you're David Coy, you're sitting there going,
okay, so I could transfer. Maybe I could go to like a, cause I was, I was in the Mac. Maybe I
could, you know, go to the American and start there or something like that. Or maybe I could
go to a lower level power five and be a player who's coming off the bench and is a six man type, or maybe I am starting. I don't know. I go to Kansas.
I could be this role player. I'm probably going to get a good paycheck from NIL.
And best case scenario, I am part of the rotation and I'm making a big impact.
Worst case scenario, I'm playing spot minutes. I'm a veteran on a team. I'm making good connections
with KU alumni and all this sort of stuff. And I'm making probably more money off NIL at KU, even being the eighth, ninth, tenth guy,
than I would be being a starter at one of these other lower level power fives,
because that's what Kansas basketball works. And from his standpoint, his earning his way up of fighting through Juco and producing at Northern Illinois leads to a,
even if it's not a, I don't know, a stardom increase in terms of the role at Kansas,
a payday increase that can change his life moving forward. So like, I do think there has to be some
level of understanding there. But anyway, those guys in competition, I mentioned Rakees Passmore.
I do think with Rakees Passmore, it's not necessarily that they're directly in competition
because of like, I mean, there's different positions. Passmore is more of a wing and
Coit is more of a, I guess, combo guard, but point guard type. And it's not necessarily that,
it's more of just like, if you're Bill Self, if you deem David Coit to be a better player than Rakees
Passmore, do you just decide, hey, instead of playing Passmore these minutes, we will just
play more three-guard lineups, or we'll just play more two-guard lineups with Coit next to
Duan or Zeke or Moore and have in store Griffin at the three, or again, the lineup where Zeke
Mayo's at the three, and you have three of those guards together so it's kind of the decision based on what you think would best
suit the team if you're Bill Self and who is the better player and then kind of making that work
so in a weird way they're not like directly in competition with each other but they're in
competition in terms of if one is clearly better than the other Coit versus Passmore then maybe it
it changes the way that you're playing
and some of the lineups you're throwing out there.
To that same notion, I'll just toss this one out there.
I don't know, maybe it could have a slight impact
on the KJ Adams minutes, because if you do have more players,
which you do now, that are capable of playing at the 1 and 2,
then some of the minutes just kind of slide down a little bit.
If now you're
playing more minutes of David Coit, Zeke Mayo, Shaquille Moore, you know, all one group together.
If now you have a few extra minutes that are going to that group at the two, then that means a little
less minutes for Rakees Passmore at the two, which means that Rakees Passmore is probably making up
some of those minutes at the three. And then if he's passed more is probably making up some of those minutes at the three.
And then for keys pass more is making up some of those minutes at the three.
It's eating away some minutes from AJ store at the three,
which means AJ store to get his minutes.
It's taking some of his minutes away from the three and putting them onto AJ store playing at the four.
And if AJ stores playing more minutes at the four,
maybe that means a little less minutes for KJ Adams at the four.
Right.
So it's just kind of like robbing Peter to pay Paul a little bit
in terms of some of this minute allocation,
at least if you view it from a standpoint of like,
oh, Storrs is going to play this many minutes.
So now if he's only playing this many at the three,
he has to play more at the four, right?
Which is not necessarily like that, but it very well could be.
So I just thought I'd bring him up at least.
All right, let's get to our new minutes projection based on this.
And I guess based on the latest that's kind of happening in the offseason,
how that could possibly sway things on this bonus episode of Locked on Jayhawks.

Okay. So this is partially with David Coy this is partially with I don't know things going on for KU during
the offseason this is partially with me switching up one thing of how I'm going to kind of view this
so with the latest minutes projection I'm continuing to go DeJuan Harris at 32 minutes
um I go back to, I think it
was a Hawk Talk last year where Bill Suff said he's more of like a 28 to 32 minute type of game
guy because you want to preserve him so he can be his best on the defensive end of the court.
I do think when push comes to shove though, Bill Suff's going to go with the veteran. So I could
actually see this being higher, but we're going to go with DeJuan Harris at 32 minutes. I got
Ryland Griffin at 26 minutes, getting some of those minutes at the two,
getting some of those minutes at the three and starting at the two.
I got A.J. Storr starting at the three and playing 30 minutes per night,
getting pretty close to an even split, a little bit more minutes at the three
than he plays at the four, but playing both of those for KU.
I got K.J. Adams starting at the four, playing 27 minutes,
all of those coming at the four playing 27 minutes. All of those coming at the
four position and all of your four minutes would be going to KJ and AJ Storr. And then your five,
I have Hunter Dickinson starting and playing 28 minutes per game. Again, that could be higher.
That could be 30, 32 if Bill Self wants to go more with the veteran, but you do seem to have
capable options at the backup big man. Then off the bench, I had originally Zeke Mayo playing a little bit more than Shaquille Moore.
I can't remember what it was last time we did this,
maybe like 18, 14 split, something like that.
I have that more even now.
So I do think the more that this has gone on,
like Shaquille Moore plays really good defense.
Bill Self is going to value that, you know, in a very real way.
So I have them both playing 16 minutes per game with Zeke and Shaquille Moore.
Zeke, I have all his minutes now coming at the two.
Shaquille Moore, I have him playing backup point guard minutes and a little bit at the two.
Then I have Flory Badunga playing 10 minutes per night as the backup center and being behind Hunter Dickinson.
And then what I did differently this time, instead of just allocating minutes for like Rakeys Passmore, Zach Clements, or now David Coit or whatever, I just put together 14 minutes
per night as spot minutes.
And so what that does is it basically gives you a slashy between Rakeys Passmore, David
Coit, and Zach Clements.
I have Jamar McDowell redshirting this, obviously Elmarco Jackson taking a medical redshirt.
And so what that means, 14 minutes a night that can be divvied out
to those three players.
So maybe your keys pass more is just that good, and he takes up all 14.
And that's just a nine-man rotation, and Coit and Clements are only playing
in, you know, oh, it's the end of the half, we need a three-point shot,
or we're blowing this team out, or we're down by a lot,
let's throw the reserves out there, right?
Maybe David Coit does that.
Maybe Zach Clements does that and is playing a little bit at the five
or the four, right?
Maybe Clements is ahead of Badunga in those minutes, which I don't know.
But the 14 minutes a night for spot minutes could also go like, okay,
Rikki's pass more plays six.
David Coit plays six.
Clements plays two.
Or tonight Clements plays eight and Coit plays six,
or like I said earlier, David Coit hit his first two threes. Now he's going to play 12 minutes,
and now Rikki's Passmore is going to get a do not play tonight, right? So it just kind of depends
night to night, but the spot minutes, or if you want to give them out to somebody else or divvy
them back up to the first kind of eight guys in the rotation, that's what I'm going with for the
current rotation as part of this.
I know that's not sexy to give out spot minutes,
but it's also realistic and it's kind of just what happens to be completely
honest.
All right.
That'll do it for this episode of locked on Jayhawks.
