Seems like KU baseball was expecting better than the 15 that they got from the NCAA tournament.
Let's break it all down with Henry Greenstein on today's episode from the Lawrence Journal World.
You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks,
part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
What's going on? Derek Johnson, joined by Henry Greenstein from the Lawrence Journal World in KU Sports.com.
And joining us here on Lockdown, Jayhawks,
We're going to break down some KU baseball.
We'll have some fun crossover questions at the end with football and basketball as well.
But get into some of the latest with the stadium.
We're trying to keep Dan Fitzgerald in town.
And we'll just start right here with Henry, who was at the, I guess he was in the room where it happens to quote from Hamilton, the famous play of where the Kansas Jayhawks were when they got selected to the NCAA tournament.
And, you know, I thought myself, I was surprised that they ended up.
as the number 15 team in terms of the rankings of the 16 hosts.
I thought that the wins over Nebraska winning the Big 12 regular in post.
I thought they'd be more in that kind of 11, 12, 13 range.
So they come up at number 15.
And what was kind of the reaction in the room on the way to getting there as well as when they were announced?
I mean, first of all, Derek, you made you made me flashback to freshman year of college there.
I haven't heard a Hamilton reference in a while.
I'll try to sneak in a couple more.
Let's see what I can find.
That was a nice little throwback.
Yeah, I mean, first of all, when they crossed the number eight line,
there was some playful booing from guys who were maybe hoping they had found a way
to sneak into being one of the national seeds.
And then, you know, as you get past 11 and 12 and 13, some justified and righteous grumbling.
I'm with you.
You know, as Travis Goff said afterward, you know, fits and the players said all the right stuff about,
we're happy we got a chance to host once you get into the tournament every team is good all the stuff
like that but Travis was like how am i supposed to interpret this like is this being that we needed
to beat west virginia in the championship and win the whole thing in order to make a regional now if you're
asking or to host a regional rather now if you're asking me if k you had lost that game maybe it would
have been number 16 and west virginia would have been number 15 but yeah it was pretty surprising um i think
KU's body of work as a whole was not taken into sufficient account when you look at Nebraska
being ahead of them. And, you know, Mississippi State, like, really? I understand they had a pretty
good resume overall, but the Arkansas fans have a valid complaint when they say Arkansas was a better
hosting candidate in many ways than the Bulldogs were. So, yeah, absolutely. The KU players, I think,
were a little irritated by exactly how it all unfolded. And, you know, it's hard to blame anyone with the
the kind of prediction economy being the way it is.
You're getting numbers from D1 Baseball and Baseball America and On 3 pumped at you every day.
And if those are telling you, you're going to be 11 or 12, as much as these guys say that they don't read any of that stuff,
you're going to think you're going to be 11 or 12.
So 15 was probably a bit of a letdown.
And it's just weird to think about, like, imagine if a KU basketball team won the Big 12 regular season and
titles and was a four seed in the NCAA tournament.
So, yeah, kind of an interesting note.
to begin that whole day on for sure.
Yeah, and then obviously you wind up with a very difficult region as part of it.
It's not just being 15.
I mean, if they would have been 15 and, you know,
maybe Arkansas's not in there who I think KU fans are tired of seeing being in their,
their postseason area, especially because they've had a lot of success against the Jayhawks.
Maybe it would be a different view, right?
And I guess in general, was there any thought to that part of it,
not just the 15 seed, but could you tell that there was a little bit of an eye roll
from the Arkansas being added from Missouri State,
who's a really good mid-baged team.
Even northeastern among, you know,
some of the teams that are kind of the four-seeds, so to speak, in the pods.
Like they seem to be a pretty challenging team among the four-seed.
So was there any sense about that this was a really difficult region?
I don't think that was something the players were really thinking about.
I think that like it's objectively true.
This is an extremely difficult region by pretty much any metric.
But that's something I think they probably weren't aware of as much.
You know, last year's team went to Arkansas.
obviously, and there's a few key holdovers from that, but they didn't actually play against them.
So it's not like, it's not really as much of a chance for revenge as it is a chance to actually do well in the NCAA term after you didn't do well last year.
So I don't know if that element was quite as prominent, but you're absolutely right.
I mean, KU and Arkansas are always on a collision course.
I honestly thought they were going to send them there in softball, so they didn't do that at least.
But it has to do with the regionality, obviously, like, especially in non-revenue sports that they value that at least somewhat.
I think they're trying to go away from it a little bit, but that still is part of it.
So, you know, even if KU had been 11 or 12, I think there's still a pretty high chance Arkansas would have been their two-seat.
People would have been more annoyed if that happened in that case, but I think they're pretty annoyed already.
And, yeah, it should make for a fun environment this weekend having a couple of regionally proximate foes.
As the Twitter banter can already tell you, it's going to be interesting this weekend in hopefully.
Yeah, this is coming out on.
wins. I mean, by the time somebody might be listening to this or watching this, I guess,
depending when you do, you might have already seen tickets go up for sale. And we'll see what happens
there. I know that was a big fuss last year that Arkansas kind of prevented other schools from
being able to get their share of tickets outside of the required allotment that they did a pretty
good job playing the game, so to speak. So we'll see what happens this time. Now, just in terms of in
between the lines on the field, what do you view as the biggest challenge for Kansas this week? And how do you
think, or I guess what are the keys to you to go about advancing?
Well, there's so many different play styles among the four teams in this regional.
I think it'll require a lot of adaptation from the Jayhawks.
You know, you look at Northeastern to start out.
It's a team that leads the country and stolen bases, and they don't just lead by a little.
They're at 210.
It's like 29 more than the next closest team.
And, you know, you could say KU has experience with teams that run from playing against the
likes of West Virginia and Cincinnati. Well, Cincinnati leads the Big 12 and stolen bases at 115.
That is a dramatic difference compared to 210 from Northeastern. Now, do I think the Northeastern
hitters will get on base enough to execute those sorts of things? Maybe, but they'll also probably
be going up against Dominic vaguely, and I'm not sure that they'll have seen a pitcher of his
caliber all year. So that's one thing. Then you think about Missouri State, which is this power-hitting
swing for the fences kind of team.
You know, Stephen, they've got a guy with 16 home runs.
Fife is a great all-around hitter, a shortstop for them.
They're going to present a big offensive threat.
And KU, if it faces Missouri State, won't be having its best pitcher when it does so,
and probably not as best for waivers either.
And in Arkansas, I mean, not exactly, like, maybe you wouldn't say a baseball blue blood,
but this is an established program that's been in these environments.
It won't be rattled by anything it sees in a regional.
Has as talented a roster as anyone KU will have seen in the Big 12 and just all around strong in a variety of ways.
They'll have their ace back after he was taken out of a game in the SEC tournament.
When he got hit by a line drive, he'll be back.
Coziel is a great player at shortstop.
So all that is to say, like so many distinct challenges presented by these three teams.
And, you know, it's hard to look away from the fact that KU is only separated by two RPI
spots from Arkansas, which is in turn separated by two RPI spots from Missouri State,
a team it's split with during the regular season.
So it's going to be as evenly matched a regional as you could possibly see.
And I wouldn't be surprised if there's some chaos and upsets along the way.
And this is one that I, like, I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing,
because this echoes a level of, I guess, balance for KU, but it also does it show the strength
of the region?
So if I look at these stat categories, from the pitching standpoint, ERA, Sierra, this would be defense, fielding percentage, and then runs allowed per game.
And then on the offensive side, I looked at these stack categories, average WRC plus home runs and runs per game.
Kansas does not lead in any of those categories among the four teams in the regional.
However, they are not last in the regional in any of them.
They're the only school.
they're not like Arkansas meanwhile would be like the leader in like three of those pitching categories.
Missouri State would be the leader in like all of the hitting categories.
Like everyone even like Northeastern's like last and most of them, Kansas isn't first or last than any of them.
So they're just like a very balanced team.
And I don't know.
Do you think that's a good thing or a bad thing here?
Yeah, that's well observed, Derek.
And this is kind of been a thing with KU all year.
Like you look at them on paper and it doesn't look like a team that would be having its best season in modern program history.
I remember ahead of the West Virginia series doing some content with our writer who covers them for the Dominion Post out in Morgantown.
Our parent companies in West Virginia.
So every time a West Virginia game comes around is a big thing.
And he was like, so KU's stats like aren't super impressive.
So why did they keep winning?
And it's like a whole lot of reasons, but they're well balanced throughout the line.
lineup. Any of those nine guys can make a big hit. They always seem to come through at the biggest
moments. Like, it's really that simple. You think about what they did to pull away late in games
in the Big 12 tournament. That's what they've been doing all year. When you think about the K-State
series or the Houston series or the Utah series, they have just been exceptionally clutch. That is
something that maybe isn't always accounted for by all those stats. But you're right, they seem to have a
higher baseline in each category than any of the other teams in the regional, even if maybe
their finest quality doesn't necessarily exceed the finest quality of Arkansas, Missouri
State in most of the categories.
We're going to talk more with Henry.
I want to get into some of the stuff with, can they keep Dan Fitzgerald?
What's going on with the baseball baseball facility?
We'll get to all that and more with Henry Greenstein and Lawrence Journal World coming
up in just a second.

Once again, Derek Johnson, joined by Henry Greenstein from the Lawrence Journal
World and KU Sports.com.
So going back to the conversation about KU being the 15 seed,
they had a couple early non-con losses, a bit of a slower start to the season.
And I think that happened last year as well a little bit, not that it was like,
they weren't sitting at 2 and 10 or anything, but they're kind of hovering around 500.
They're losing a couple games, maybe more than you would expect.
And I can't help but equate Kansas being in a colder weather state having to go on the road for all these early season games and that leading to a slower start.
And maybe at the end of the day, that is the difference of being the number 15 versus being, you know, a team hosting a super regional being in the top eight.
And so that's where this indoor facility comes into play.
We've since seen some different fundraising efforts, the Anderson family, given $100,000 to match.
there's been some other stuff that's kind of come around that.
I guess from just the standpoint of KU as a program,
but also trying to keep Dan Fitzgerald as the head coach at Kansas,
how prominent do you think this indoor facility is?
I mean, he called it critical to their future,
like in a hawk talk, no less.
Like, it's not like he was being grilled about it.
He volunteered the notion that it was critical to their future.
That was actually the first time I heard about that,
possibility that they might build an indoor baseball facility. And so I asked Travis about it a few
weeks ago and he said, yeah, we've talked about it. You know, anytime we consider undertaking a new
project, we have to weigh it against all sorts of other things that are going on. But yeah,
we've talked about it. Well, at the selection show, he came out in a much stronger terms and said,
we are doing this. It's critical for our future, which of course is exactly what Fitz said.
And it's going to be right next to the clubhouse. So they're doing it. How you do,
Do this when the stadium project is still ongoing, I'm not sure it will take a Herculean effort from KU's fundraisers, especially at a time where the athletic department itself is operating in a deficit.
But I like your hypothesis about the slow start to the year.
You're right. It wasn't anything devastating.
But it's crazy to think back that they lost their opener to UTRGV and lost a midweek to Lamar and dropped two out of three to a team that ended up being the worst pitching team in the Big 12.
and finished 12th in the conference.
So, yeah, I mean, you're fighting an uphill battle in general as a college baseball team in a cold weather state.
So anything they can do to ease that and help the development of their players even more,
you know, the player acquisition has been great.
But the development doesn't get often talked about quite as much as what fits and John Coyne have been doing in recruitment.
well, if you have that many more reps with them in a more baseball-like environment,
instead of trying to practice in like the football teams indoor facility or something,
that could go a long way in January and February before things get started in earnest.
So, yeah, I think this is, and I think fans need to understand, like, this is the priority.
Expanding Hoagland is not the priority.
Now, I think they, now they have this transparent left field fence in place and some other things like that,
well, it's not like it will take much to keep that.
But I don't think people should expect transformative changes to Hoagwin Ballpark in the near future
compared to how urgent Travis is making this indoor facility, understanding that it's a priority for the program.
And frankly, probably understanding that if you're going to keep fits, this is something you need to do.
Yeah. And I know this is the quote that was kind of been going around in which people have said,
oh, like he's not leaving and stuff the other day at the, like,
guess after tournament post game or whatever you want to call it.
The quote is there's no possible way that I could be more excited about the future of Kansas
baseball.
That was the one that people were running with.
Now, I will say if you watch the full video or listen to the full quote, there is more
in there that I think actually should make you optimistic saying that like he's not engaged
in anything.
He talks to Travis every day, like all those sorts of things.
But you know as well as I do.
Like I think, okay, we see it all the time in like college football.
mainly, right? Like, that's the one where it's the Wild West. If a college football got, like,
if Lane Kiffin, when he was at LSU answered, I mean, shoot, we just saw it with Tommy Lloyd
at Arizona when he was asked about it. And he ended up staying. But every time he was asked about it,
he wouldn't say, like, oh, I'm staying at Arizona. He'd be like, I'm just really excited for,
like, the future of this program or like, what's coming up this weekend. That's, that's enough of a
non-answer to me that, I don't know. Maybe it comes from a point of Dan Fitzgerald, again,
trying to apply pressure to get things done like the indoor practice facility.
But it is enough of a thing to me to make me think there is a non-zero chance that Dan
Fitzgerald would take another job from a standpoint of like, there's going to be really good
jobs trying to hire Dan Fitzgerald.
Yeah.
And we'll see what becomes open later in this cycle.
You know, all the focus has been on South Carolina because it's been open since midseason.
And honestly, like, it'll be tough for KU to compete from a facility standpoint.
and it'll be tough for them to compete from a financial standpoint.
But I think both, you know, both Travis and Fitz probably would like people in the public
to maybe have a greater understanding of the extension that he signed last year as something
that's already in and of itself consequential.
Like whenever, whenever Travis is asked, as he was the other day, about, you know, how
confident are you that Fitz staying in warrants, he's like, well, we signed a pretty significant
and non-like incremental extension last year.
And it's true.
It did raise his salary a lot.
He was at $675,000 this year, I think.
And as he remarked upon and as I found out by looking at the contract,
he got an extra year added automatically for winning the Big 12th.
So he's under contract through 2032 on a pretty good deal.
It's just that SEC baseball programs are operating in an entirely different situation than KU is.
but it is entirely possible that he enjoys Lawrence and KU
and his relationships with Sean Wester and Travis Goff
enough that that has some value too
and that he will ultimately decide to stay.
I think he's a very straightforward and to the point guy.
I do agree with you that line is a little bit of coach speak,
but I believe him when he says that he and Travis
are in constant communication about everything
and that they have an open and earnest,
and straightforward relationship.
So that's promising to hear,
but I don't think KU fans
will be able to totally rest easy
until this coaching cycle is over.
Yes, for sure.
And once that facility is built in everything,
now the ballpark, like you said,
maybe not like some permanent, you know,
difference that they're going to have here.
But what are we talking about this week?
What are some of the differences
that are going to be at the stadium for the regional?
Yeah, so everyone's focused on the backyard.
You know, you've got to give something a catchy name
with capitalization.
They did a great job with that.
The backyard is a little seating area,
really not a seating area.
It's like a grassy patch out past left field
where you can bring your own lawn chairs.
It's separate from all other seating arrangements.
And they've made the field and left the left field fence,
as I alluded to earlier, transparent so you can see through it.
Louisville has a similar thing at its ballpark.
And that was a, I mean,
props for them for going to have done so quickly. I think that was a very key arrangement in advance
of this regional. And the end of time, frankly, not knowing for sure if they'd be able to host a
regional, but, you know, as Travis said the other day, the facilities, people just kind of got
going on it without them having to say anything. So that's kind of the central component, but also
the first and third base side concourses will be expanded. There will be more concessions and
restrooms. The visitor bullpen has been moved to the area that was previously the visitor's
bullpen is now a standing room-only area. And all told, this will amount to about 1,500 additional
capacity. Now, 4,000 still pales in comparison to a lot of the top facilities in the country.
But on the other hand, UCLA baseball plays in a stadium with like 1,800 capacity. So,
yeah. But all that is to say, it will amount to a heightened and maybe more elegant and
certainly more capacious version of Hoagland Ballpark than what people have seen all year.
Word of the day right there.
All right.
We're going to get into some crossover questions, including a Battle of the Coles and Mount Rushmore of current KU basketball or KU coaches in general.
We'll get to all that next and more.
All right.
Thanks for joining us.

com.
We're joined by Henry Greenstein of Lawrence Jeter World and KU.Sports.com.
Get to our fun crossover questions.
Here's your first one, Henry.
who's going to have more postseason wins.
Get out your crystal ball.
KU baseball this year or KU basketball plus KU football next year.
Okay.
Well, so for KU baseball to emerge from this regional and needs three wins.
But then honestly, like if KU goes to a series against Georgia Tech,
I'm not sure I think that it's winning one.
That's a really, really good team.
I don't know if I could predict in confidence they'd get one right now.
So if I'm starting with three for KU baseball, that's really tough because then I'm having to essentially determine whether I think KU football is going to a bowl game, whether they can win a bowl game.
And then in turn, do I think that KU basketball is making out of the first weekend for the first time as the national championship year?
They do.
I'm going to say yes, I think KU basketball is making out of the first weekend for the first time as the national championship year.
I have a lot of uncertainties and qualms with this year's roster, but I also love its upside.
I think they could definitely get two wins.
But then the problem is, do I, I don't want to chicken out of this by saying it's going to be a push.
But I'm kind of feeling like that might be the way to go here.
I mean, if you call push, that is actually probably harder to hit because you have to hit an exact number.
Then I'll go for it then because that way I'm covered in a couple of scenarios.
I'm covered in KU basketball losing in the Sweet 16 and KU football winning a bowl game.
And I'm also covered if KU basketball goes to the elite eight and loses there and KU football loses a bowl game,
which I think is maybe a little bit more likely.
So I'm going to say three and three.
I'll even give you an exact number.
There we go.
Got the exact of there.
Okay.
Battle of the Coles here.
More likely to start Cole Ballard every game of the KU football season or Cole Rosario for 10 plus.
less games for KU basketball.
All right.
So Cole Ballard every game first implies that he wins the starting job,
which I would say is probably like a 55% chance right now.
And then I'm sure it's boring for people to hear me say this aloud,
but this is how I have to reason through it.
So that has to happen.
And then he has to also not get injured or benched for the entire year.
Or they have to not run a trick play on the first play.
of the game. I guess he might still start at wide receiver or something. Remember though that in 23
when Jalen Daniels was hurt going into the year, missed the first game, and then they came out of the
second game with both him and Bean on the field. They both started that game. So, but, so that seems,
it seems hard for me to project him starting every game. So then you go think about the other
one and Cole Rosario starting 10 games. That seems more plausible to me.
I think I would have felt a little bit better about it before they got Dennis Parker Jr.
But with him being one of the more experienced guys on the team, then you factor in the fact that
KU can probably line up in a few different ways this year as opposed to last season and the fact
that, you know, injuries will happen and everything.
I'm going to lean a little bit more to that first one.
I'm not sure that I would have Cole Rosario in my like predicted starting lineup for this
year. But 10 games isn't like a huge stretch. That's less than a third of the year. So I'm going to
say that as more likely than Cole Bauer starting every single game for KU football.
Okay. Here you can take this one however you want. You can take this one as like all time. What
they've accomplished. You can take it as like who's most likely to succeed this year. However
you want to view this. And I can give you mine if it helps you out, but rank the Mount Rushmore of
current KU coaches. So it can be any sport at KU.
So is it four of them?
Yes.
And the idea and only head coaches because it's going to get complicated.
Yes, we're only going to do head coaches.
And, yeah, head coaches will be the only answer here.
Yeah.
It's really tough to make some of the, I often ask people, like, who is the best hire that Travis Goff has made?
I think it's fixed.
Yeah, I was going to say now you might argue it's fits because I think this season might be the single most impressive season that any coach.
he's hired his head.
But you know who I think is a sneaky up there, who I would have on mine.
Nate?
You know, Nate would be in the conversation, too.
I might have Nate on there, but it would actually be Lindsay Cool.
Yeah, it's true when you look at the, when you look at how little they had been to NCAA
regionals and previous years.
And obviously what she did last year is about, is basically approximately as impressive as
what fits did this year.
But I say it's a little different because they didn't quite have the conference title.
They did have the individual and team NCAA.
regional's but I don't know so I mean Bill self's got to be up there and Fitz has got to be up there
so then I'm thinking about everything else like if I including the entirety of Stanley Redwines
career like that's hard to ignore he he's accomplished a lot um and then you know I said
Nate Lee obviously that that conference tournament run in his first season with essentially
the same players that had been really bad the year before was incredibly impressive um
but oh gosh i don't know if it's fair for me to just go straight like self fits nately and
winsey cool but that's kind of what i'm thinking right now i i don't want to neglect the great
work that that red wine has done um or any of the other veteran coaches when you think about
i don't know quark campbell or something like that but i'm i'll be interested to hear what yours is
because i'm kind of leaning towards self and then the three golf hires i think that's how i would go
well. I mean, the more I think about it with Nate Lee, because I was like, I was like,
do I think about, you know, somebody else with, I don't know, golf or like tennis or something,
get on there. But I think with Nate Lee, too, I believe he was the first golf hire to make a
sweet 16. That, that sounds about right. I mean, it's not totally equivalent from sport to sport.
Right. But yeah, I think that's, I think that's correct. Now, granted, Omar has also been to a
sweet 16 since then. But he's, yeah, see, Omar would be up there for me too. But I, maybe there's just
not as much runway. Yeah, he's only had one season. And this year will be really interesting with him
because it's going to be an incredibly young team. Yes. So a lot of good ones you can go after,
I think is the bottom line there. Okay, let's ask our trivia question. Then we're going to go here
yesterday in the 2007 NCAA tournament, Mario Chalmers said what wound up being his career
high and assists of eight against what team. The answer is Kentucky. Our question for today that will
answer on tomorrow's show on February 5th, 2022. Kansas blew out what AP ranked top 10 opponents.
83 to 59 in a big 12 game.
Were you on the beat at that point in time?
No, no.
That was like a year in three months before I started.
So I'll think about it, but I might not know that one.
Okay.
Well, you can give that answer.
Hit us up in the replies and I'll see you back here tomorrow.
