of the KU Oklahoma State game.
Jayhawks blow out Oklahoma State.
Are all the problems gone?
Are they a new team?
Is it a new season now for KU?
We're going to get into all that on today's edition of LOJ, which you can find anywhere you get your podcast as well as on our YouTube page we'll get into
game awards as well and what's next for KU first this episode of the show is brought to you by
FanDuel Sportsbook right now do FanDuel customers and get $150 in bonus bets if your first $5 that
wins and if you would have been brave enough to take Kansas minus, I think it closed at minus 14,
then boom, you're good to go right now
for the Kansas big blowout win against Oklahoma State.
Thought like a nice reverse from the BYU game,
certainly in that area.
So Kansas blasts Oklahoma State.
Let's get into our recap here.
I think coming into this game,
you would have been content to take a win
any way that you could have gotten it,
the way that Kansas was falling back it the way that Kansas was, you
know, falling back and the way that they were playing the way
they were looking, how not fun it was to watch at times and
lack of energy, all those different things that we've
talked about ad nauseam. So you would have taken a win in any
situation. But to win like this provides that level of hope that
I'm kind of talking about here. Because if you would have sque like this provides that level of hope that
I'm kind of talking about here, because if you would have squeaked this one out
against teams that you're favored by, you know, 14 points, the Kenp on that
is an even bigger line than that.
But maybe the sports books were looking into the vibes a little bit and dropped
the line a few points.
If you would have won this game by four points and you had to eke it out, it
would have been like, okay, great.
Like you got to win.
You needed to win a game to make the to clinch your bid into the NCAA tournament possibly, right? Which I think
they're good for now, regardless of what happens the rest of the way. If you want to make sure of
that win on Monday against Colorado, but still, like, yeah, that would have been the thing.
The fact that you win by as much as you did, where you looked as good as you did playing
basketball and some of the little things that went into the game and how good some of the different players looked gives you hope that it could be a new season that maybe, you know, the BYU game was a new low.
And a lot of times when successful people or athletes, I guess get embarrassed in a certain way that can be a wake up call for him. Now, you can say there's been a lot of different moments of that over the course of the season, but maybe that was the kind of rock bottom moment for them.
Indeed in the BYU game and maybe this will be a new season.
I'm not definitively ready to say that this changes everything, but like I said, the fact
that you won in a blowout where you did look good doing it does at least provide a little
bit of hope that things could be a little bit different moving forward to me than like
I said, if you would have just, oh, you won by four because you were more talented team, but it didn't really look like you played
that good of a basketball game. That does matter in the context of how you won this game. And,
you know, there are some games where you can mask a little bit by how you shoot or how the opponent
shoots, right? Like there are certain games where maybe, you know, you actually played an okay game,
but the other team shot lights out or you
didn't make any shots and you lost the game to a lesser opponent or something and so that
notion I do think like looking back to like the Iowa State win for instance the kids had
you know field house good win you know a very good team that they beat looking back on that
one like part of me is like Kansas played a good game like give them credit for that
they beat a good team but part of that, was just Iowa State was like not themselves.
They weren't hitting shots.
They were in a bit of a rut of the season.
And so I think that sold that a little bit.
And so you can look at this one and say, oh, well, Kansas shot
51% from the floor and they made a billion threes in this game,
you know, more than we usually see them make or take in a given game.
And, you know, if they did all these things, they shot lights out.
And that stuff is true.
But that's not why they won this game in a blowout.
I mean, it's part of it and it extends the score and everything like that.
But this isn't a game where you just come away from it and be like,
well, you know, Kansas just mask their deficiencies today
because they couldn't miss a shot, you know, and you look at it
and it's like, no, Kansas defended really well against Oklahoma State,
like Oklahoma State out that. I don't know.
Almost like a mini run.
Not a run because it wasn't like to put an indent on the lead.
But like they had a stretch where over a couple minutes in the middle of the second half where
they were hitting like some threes here and there.
But you held Oklahoma State to below 40% from the floor.
And that was with them even making some garbage time shots at the end of the game that raised
that percentage.
You force 17 turnovers.
What is this?
A Kansas defense forcing a ton of turnovers?
That was great to see for KU.
And that led to you having almost 30 points
off of turnovers for the game.
Your rebounding was excellent for Kansas.
You ended up over plus 20 on the rebounding battle.
For the game, Kansas had like as many offensive rebounds
as Oklahoma State had defensive rebounds.
If you're getting one of every two rebound
that goes up when you're on the offensive end of the court,
that is obviously a big recipe for success.
And something we talked about earlier, like Oklahoma State again,
coming into this game,
Oklahoma State had been one of the better
rebounding teams in the Big 12, but specifically
Oklahoma State had been one of the better
rebounding teams in the Big 12 on defensive rebounding.
Coming into the game on Friday, they were the number one team in Big 12 only games in defensive rebounding rate.
By the time the game tipped off one of the earlier Big 12 games, they were coming into this game number two in Big 12 only games in defensive rebounding rate.
Kansas grabbed about half of the offensive rebounds against them.
That is again bonkers talk about second
chance points. Kansas puts up over 20 second chance points.
They outscore Oklahoma State by double figures in second chance
points. You have 36 bench points if you're Kansas in this game
points to the paint Kansas doubled up Oklahoma State and
got a high number in points in the paint. They had more fast
break points something that we finally saw Kansas get back to
their level of scoring that we were used to 12 fast break points in this game and then 15 steals like
that's a big one. And you pass the ball super well. Like that's part of shooting the ball
well too. It wasn't just the Kansas had a game where it's like, Oh, they're sitting
all these prayers and it's just their game. A big reason why they shot so well is because
they moved the ball so well. The I thought this was you could argue the best game from
the KU guard. I don't know, maybe maybe I'm forgetting
a game earlier this season. But like, certainly recently,
certainly in the last like month or two, this was the best game
collectively by the KU guards. Because you look at it, and I
felt like the one Harris was in complete control the entirety of
the game, you got big offensive explosions from you know, Zeke
Mayo hitting deep threes and David Koyt hitting a bunch. I
mean, Zeke Mayo and diggierees and David Coy hitting a bunch. I mean, Zeke Mayo and Diggy Coy hit a combined 10 threes
for the game like Ryland Griffin was active in this one, you were getting a
bunch from the guard position for Kansas that that led to that and it led to
Dwan driving and being able to kick and the ball movement was beautiful and the
extra passing was beautiful and not settling for a good shot and getting a
great shot was beautiful for Kansas. All those things tell you that it wasn't just Oh, Kansas shot the
ball well, so they blew out Oklahoma State. No, they played a good basketball game and shot the
ball well. And part of shooting the ball well was because they played a great basketball game.
And then you add to it, they're like, they did get legit contributions from like all their rotation
players. Like Rikies Passmore didn't score in 10 minutes. And, you know, you have the walk ons
come in, it was cool to see Wilder ever score a couple buckets and keys pass more didn't score in 10 minutes. And, you know, you have the walk ons come in, it
was cool to see while they're ever score a couple buckets and
Patrick Cassidy doesn't score and you know, whatever. But from
the guys who were like real rotation players, and we're
playing in the meaningful minutes of the game, they all
scored for Kansas, and they all contributed in different ways.
hundred tickets in as a double double 16 and 11 in just 21
minutes of play is pretty remarkable. It's how like the
the UCF game they played down in Orlando. He was great for KU in this game.
Duann Harris, like I said, he was in control
the entire game.
He finished with 14 points and five assists.
Zeke Mayo hits all those threes.
Ryland Griffin gives you a couple threes
and pitches in in some other areas here or there.
KJ gives you a couple dunks
and has a good rebounding game with the six rebounds.
Like that's what you're asking for every night from KJ Adams.
AJ Storr had a few moments where it looked good.
I know still the efficiency not great there,
but a few moments where it at least looked good here or there.
Diggy Coy had an awesome game
for Cade to shooting the three ball, right?
And again, like I said, between him and Zeke Mayo,
you get 10 made threes, you'll take that anytime you can.
And then Flory Badunga,
Flory didn't score until the final,, I think it was like the final like 12
minutes of the game. I think he had zero points. He finished with
six in that final stretch that he was in. But it's the
rebounding for it's 16 rebounds. It's seven offensive
rebounds. We're talking about, you know, Kansas dominated on
the glass against a good defensive rebounding team.
Flory is chiefs amongst them in terms of the guys that led to
that happening. So you get all
these contributions from all these different players. It looked like it worked. It looked
like they enjoyed playing together. You're passing the ball around making these extra
passes. It was just good to see. And even though it's a lesser opponent and you should
beat those teams. And when you're going to shoot that well against lesser opponent, you
should blow them out. The way that it looks, the way that it went about the things that went into the win for KU are very
encouraging to give you hope that this could be the start of
a new streak for Kansas. Now, the one thing I will say we have
been here before, you know, whether it was the Iowa State
win, whether it was that stretch at the beginning of January,
where they look good, and it was questions, are they turning the
corner? Are they figuring it out? And then that was met very quickly after with no, not quite the case.
And so as much as I would love to say they're back, as much as I would love to
say, you know, this or that you're not back unless you're good consistently
moving forward, you know, anybody can be good on a specific night and it was
great to see, it was great to see how good they were, but if we're talking
long-term here, this is a good start and you was great to see. It was great to see how good they were. But if we're talking long term here,
this is a good start and you do have to start somewhere.
So I will say that like yeah, absolutely.
This could be the start of a stretch.
We could be looking back and you know,
five games from now and be like wow that gave me a
tokloma state like kick things off and that was the
start of this really good level of play for KU.
But you know, it still would not based on how the
season has gone be unorthodox for this team to go out on Monday night at Colorado and kind of lay a stinker a little bit, right?
Like that is entirely possible too. So if you're asking me the question of are they back? Are they good now? Are they fixed? Are they figured out? That's a TBD.
But specifically for a day on this Saturday, February 27th at Allen Fieldhouse, it did look like a good basketball team. It was encouraging to see and I hope you enjoyed it. I
thought over the opening part of this, we're going to get to our
game awards next and then we're going to get to what's next for
KU on the schedule. This is locked on Jayhawks.

Making us your first listen every day.
We'll have a KU Colorado preview
coming at you on Monday.
So game trophies, Kansas 96, Oklahoma State 64
best moment of the game.
Honestly, like I'm just going to pick moments
from the first half because
that was like obviously there were some
cool moments in the second half, but that was when specifically the game was not in doubt necessarily,
but when it was closer, at least for like the first part of the first half.
So I think that's what you're looking for is like, when the game changed that that kind
of kill shot type moment.
I will say that the cage Adams one hand like dunk tip, that was just a really cool moment
to go up 12 to seven.
That was really early in the game.
So I'll be up there.
But I think for me, it's the it might be the back to back dunks by KJ
that was not the tip dunk that made it 38 to 31,
because that point you were starting to pull away.
You get the back to back dunks and that can just be demoralizing
the Zeke Mayo like very deep three to go up 48, 23.
I think the best moment of the game though is the Hunter Dickinson.
Have you seen Flory do this a couple times and it's like, oh, this dude's this like next level athlete.
It didn't look the same.
It didn't look as athletic when he did it, but it was still darn awesome.
And it was still really cool to watch when Hunter Dickinson got the steel and got the run out off the dribble and throws down a hard one-handed dunk.
That was really cool to see.
And then how how I guess pumped up and emotional that he got after it like that was really cool to
see. So I'm gonna pick that for the best moment of the game made it 52 to 23, like kind of
completely put it out of reach. And then the rest is history from there. Worst moment of
the game there was I mean, the first couple minutes of the game was kind of like ugly
like bad turnovers kind of going back and forth. They're like, is anything different
right here?
So that was not great and a little discouraging.
And then when Bryce Thompson, who had already made a three
at this point in time, it was after that KJ one hand dunked.
Kids actually had like a good defensive possession,
but it ends up in the hands of Bryce Thompson, who was shooting this like deep,
like a few feet behind the three point line contested
three pointer with the shot clock winding down and somehow goes in.
It was like, oh no, like it's two point game.
Kind of been a weird start.
Like Bryce Thompson is just going in for no, he's going to get his revenge on KU in the real way.
But obviously that didn't bear itself out for the rest of the game.
But that would probably be the worst moment, the most doubtful moment, I guess, of the game.
Appalling stat of the game.
I would go back to the offensive rebound rate for KU in this game. Appalling stat of the game. I would go back to the offensive rebound rate for KU in this game. Let me get the actual
number because I was just tossing around like about
numbers. The actual number Kansas got 18 offensive
rebounds. Oklahoma State got 17 defensive rebounds. Yeah,
Kansas ended up with more offensive rebounds than
Oklahoma State got defensive rebounds for a team that was
coming in one of the top teams in the big 12 and defensive
rebounding rate and you just dominated them on the offensive glass
and were able to get those extra possessions
and Kansas ended up with 13 more shots for the game.
Now part of that Oklahoma State got to the free throw line
more, so that's going to take away shots,
but still that was obviously very impressive for KU to do.
So I think that would be the most appalling stat
of the game if I guess you're looking for, I don't know,
there's not really,
because the word appalling almost makes it sound
like it's a negative thing.
And that seems to be a positive one.
So I don't know what you could say would be the negative one
here because of the fact that Kansas played so well,
I guess it would be that Kansas had 18 turnovers
on the offensive end.
Like that's the one thing that wasn't great for KU
that they had 18 turnovers.
But yeah, I think it's the rebounding
and how good it was for KU.
Okay. What about offensive MVP for the Jayhawks?
So a lot of options here against 16 points on seven of 10
from Hunter Dickinson of five offensive rebounds
in 21 minutes.
Duann Harris control all game, 14 points, five assists.
Zeke Mayo hits five threes.
You got the Flory Badunga seven offensive rebounds
with six points that leads to some stuff there.
So I'm going to actually go diggie quite and I know diggie quite didn't lead in scoring.
He didn't lead in the sis, although he did have four, which is more than you're used to from diggie.
Court is mostly a shop maker for Kansas.
The reason I'm going to equate is because going back to the idea when it was a game when it was a closer contest early in the action,
who was the one hitting the big shots?
It was Diggy Coy.
He hit three first half threes, I believe, right?
And then he hits the two,
kind of the first 10 minutes of the second half.
And when it was, you know, it's like 20 to 17,
and he's hitting a three,
or when it is a little bit tighter of a game,
and you're still trying to find that momentum,
Diggy Coy came out gunning, and he came out hitting some big threes for you to grab that early momentum
that allowed things to snowball.
And so I think from that standpoint, he had very big shots
and anytime you get somebody coming off the bench who goes five of nine from three,
gives you four assists to one turnover in 22 minutes,
that is a huge impact on the game.
I think this is a perfect example of what you want from Diggy Coy.
In games where he's feeling it, in games where he's a flamethrower, cool.
He plays 22 minutes a night and he makes a big offensive impact.
And then in other games, if he's not feeling it, misses his first two shots or whatever,
yeah, maybe that's a night where he only plays like eight minutes or whatever it is, right?
I think that makes a lot of sense in terms of his role, and it was good to see him get that
because I do think that the staff really likes Diggy Coy, and I want him him to come back next year give you another veteran option that you can have off the bench
and is content with with the role that he has and seems like a very hard worker. I was
listening at one point on the radio to the game and they kind of talked about how he's
always like in the gym late nights like getting up shots and stuff like that. So that was
cool to see for diggy quotes. I'm gonna go with him for offensive MVP. But you know,
you'd be totally fine if you did pick Hunter,
Dewan, or Zeke, or you know, one of these other guys as well.
If you're Kansas defensive MVP for KU, I mean, overall,
this was a good defensive game.
You hold Oklahoma State to 37% from the floor.
You get those 17 turnovers, which is the most you've had in a long time
if you're Kansas.
And if you're looking specifically at who got the steals,
of course those turnovers, Hunter had two, there were a
bunch of other players who had one seven other players had one
steal, but it was Dewan Harris, he had six steals for the game.
And you look at the other end of the court for Oklahoma State,
Arturo Dean, one of their point guards, two points on just one
of five shooting with a couple of turnovers, Jamerion Keller,
one of their other guards, he had just two points on one of five shooting.
I think DeJuan Harris has to be the pick.
I will say like honorable mention here,
we can talk about Florid Bidunga,
he had three blocks and a steal
and he had nine defensive rebounds.
So like that does matter.
You know, Hunter had the two steals,
one that led to that awesome run out dunk.
He had six defensive rebounds, it doesn't matter.
But yeah, I think DeJuan,
when I say he was in control of the game, he was so calm and
composed.
He was created.
He was either giving the pass or starting the passing lanes with some of the great ball
movement Kansas had.
He scored some a little bit in this game, but he was also in control in the defense
event and able to get those timing six steals like that is a gigantic number.
He has to be defensive MVP.
He just has to like honestly, you could have a game where like you were,
it's kind of like a corner.
Like you could have a game where your corner gave up.
And I thought Dewan had good defense beyond the steals.
So I'm not saying this was the case for him,
but like just in general,
you could have a game where if you're a corner,
you give up like five big caches for 120 yards.
But if you have two pick sixes, isn't that worth more?
You know, it's like,
even if Dewan didn't have a great like just baseline
defensive game with again, I think you did have a good
defensive baseline game. The six steals are worth so much. And at
the end of the day, when you look at Kansas being able to
score 17 points off opponent turnovers and 27 points directly
off points off turnovers, I don't know why those are
different numbers. But nonetheless, you know, that's a
big reason why
in this game. What's next for the Jayhawks? Well, Kansas
officially grabs their 18th win. So they need two more victories
if they're going to want to get back to that keep the 20 game
win streak going. I do think this puts them in a good
position to make the NCAA tournament. Still, if you do
lose your final five games at the big 12th tournament, that
would not look good because that point you would have your losses
in like eight of your last 10.
And again, that's not on the team sheet anymore,
how you doing the last 10, but I do think they'd be in now.
But if you want to make sure
that you're in the NCAA tournament,
win one more game and Monday night will be the most wittable
from there for your kids.
But obviously you want more
than just make the NCAA tournament.
You want this team playing hot, coming in at the right time.
So at Colorado is the Monday night game.
I hope you get your energy drinks
and your coffee ready for Monday
because they are playing that game at 10 PM.
So that'll be the big challenge here, right?
Colorado has not been good so far this season.
Like that is apparent.
They have really struggled in big 12th play,
although give them credit.
They have won two of their last three games.
They beat Baylor today at home.
So actually that makes them a little more scary.
They beat UCF at home, maybe popping their bubble,
and then they beat Baylor by two at home.
And maybe they're playing a little bit better basketball.
So that might be a little bit more scary there.
But still, this team that is two and 14 in Big 12 play on the overall.
But the fact that you're playing at 10 o'clock,
the fact that you're playing on the road in altitude, quick turnaround,
and they're feeling a little more confident now,
and they played you well in the second half.
You know, in field house,
it becomes a little more tough of a game.
And then you have that final three game stretch
where you have two at home, one on the road,
Texas Tech, Arizona at home, Houston on the road.
Those are three teams who are in the top 12 on Kenpom.
If you can go three and one down this stretch,
I think you're gonna actually feel good
about where you're at coming into the big 12th tournament Even if you go to and to I feel okay, you're
not gonna feel worse than you did after the BYU game. But at
very least one one of these that you know, we don't even have to
have a conversation about the NCAA tournament stuff. So
upcoming tough games, but you know, you played obviously a lot
better at home. So if you can win that game in Colorado, even
though Texas Tech has been an awesome team this year, and they, you know, blew you out last year when you played
down in Lubbock, you're gonna start feeling the vibes of okay,
you want to straighten the row. You're playing back at home and
in front of the outfield house crowd should be a good crowd for
that game when you're playing a, you know, top team in the
country and Texas Tech and then maybe you can get the magic
really feeling and really going from there. If you're Kansas, I don't know for
this episode of locked on Jayhawks again, we'll be back on
Monday for Kansas Colorado preview, we'll have a postcast
up after that game. I'm not looking forward to how late I'm
gonna have to stay up for that. But we will have that up for
