Should Isaiah Marshall be the QB of the future for KU and other big takeaways from the KU Wagner game?
Plus, we get to our goats of the game and an early look at the Missouri game.
You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Hey, how's it going? Derek Johnson here at D. Johnson Radio on Twitter at L.O. underscore Jayhawks for that account as well. And this is locked on Jayhawks. Thanks for making it your first listen every day. Thank you to the everydayers catching each and every episode of the show.
On today's episode, we're going to be talking our biggest takeaways from the Kansas Wagner game, including that QB2 battle. Should Isaiah Marshall be the Q? You will get to our go to the game, who are the basically MVP's LVPs of the game for KU?
you against Wagner. And then we'll take an early look at the Missouri Tigers.
It is rivalry week for KU to round out the non-conference portion of the season.
Today's episode is brought to you by Game Time, where you can go to get tickets for that
KU Missouri game. If you want to make the travel out there, download the GameTime app,
create an account, and use code locked on college for $20 off your first purchase with
game time. Okay, so Kansas dominates Wagner and the final score probably could have been
even more. Kansas couple turnovers in the end zone.
and yada, yada, yada, you took care of business like you needed to.
I think one of the biggest takeaways of the game, though, was we wanted to see that
quarterback two battle continue on.
We wanted to see a lot of reps for Cole Ballard.
We wanted to see a lot of reps for Isaiah Marshall.
And you still wind up with a game where, you know, they have nine combined passes and they
had eight combined runs.
So it's still a pretty small sample size.
And the sample size that the coaching staff is getting in practice, and they value consistency
every day in practice so much is going to trump what is happening in this one specific game.
I think it's really hard, though, from the fan perspective, from what we get to see,
not to watch what we did see in that game against Wagner and not see the electric ceiling
potential of what Isaiah Marshall could possibly be, the creation he brings to the table.
And, you know, I do think that Cole Ballard is kind of a gamer and is a gutsy player.
and I've continued to say, if Cole Ballard ends up being the guy, you credit him because, you know, you don't look at this as, oh, the other guys failed.
You look at this as, oh, Cole Ballard balled out and deserved to win that job.
But like, I have a hard time seeing that game and being like, man, once Isaiah Marshall does, once it does click with the consistency and the everyday stuff and does get, you know, another year this year under his belt, like the ceiling to me, you do see that on the field that it's hard not to, at least if those are the choices, we'll wait and see what.
happens with the guy like David McComb, but it's hard for me not to be like, okay,
he has the long-term, you know, bigger kind of potential there. Now, this is a game where
Isaiah Marshall did not, you know, even attempt to pass beyond 10 yards past the line of
scrimmage. So like, you know, what exactly are we talking about here? But you have a game
where, you know, Cole Ballard goes just two for six, 38 yards. He'd have the 218 yard
completion. As part of that, he had, you know, Bryson Canty made,
almost a really good catch, we couldn't get the foot in bounds.
That was a play where it's like, okay, if Ballard has a better throw,
then he's able to make that catch a little bit more easy there.
I do think Ballard had obviously a nice rushing game.
He ended up with five carries for 42 yards.
You saw kind of that grit and toughness running between the tackles.
Yet at the same point in time, you also saw Isaiah Marshall's like speed really pay off
in running three carries for 23 yards.
Marshall was also three for three for 28 yards.
So you get a little bit more pass efficiency there.
Now, it is important to note that, like, I don't know, when you go back and rewatch some of the game,
how much is Isaiah Marshall reading the full field and going through the full progressions,
how much of it is, you know, look for the first guy.
If it's not there, I'm going to just try to create with my legs.
Maybe that can work for a guy, you know, who is really good with his legs.
And I don't have the answer to that.
But that is a real question of like, okay, but is Cole Ballard going through his progressions a little bit better there?
Maybe that's part of it, too, with the coaching staff.
But again, it's hard for me not to say that, I guess I would put it this way.
I would expect Cole Ballard to be QB2 the rest of the season for KU football, you know, to be the backup.
Well, I guess if there were an injury, he would be QB1 at that point in time.
But I would expect him to be the guy who gets that first call off the bench.
If we're talking with another full year, this year of practices, into spring ball with more reps,
I've seen enough from Isaiah Marshall that makes me believe,
just gives me enough of a kindle of belief
that I think Isaiah Marshall could be that starting quarterback for week one in
2026.
Is it overemphasizing a random game against Wagner with like two drives?
Yes, it is, but I don't care.
Number two, biggest takeaway from the game was the KU offense line was a lot better
than it was in week one.
You know, it ended up like we went over some of the numbers on provable focus
and it wasn't very pretty for KU that was in the aftermath now they do go back and regrade their games they have like I think they have like three people who grade each game I don't know it's it's multiple checkers and then they end up with like final scores off it so actually based off that KU actually ended up with okay grades against Fresno State blocking but this week they ended up even better they were almost you know basically eight nine points better run blocking they're basically the same from past blocking perspective but they give up zero tackles for loss they give up zero sacks in this game and I
I also think one of the big differences from this one, from what it was in week one,
was just straight up like there were even more players who had big time performances and more
consistency all the way through the offensive line for KU.
Like you might have had some guys who really spiked and had big offensive line games for
KU against Fresno State, but there were a couple, you know, there was the six penalties
from offensive linemen.
There were a couple bad plays where it was miscommunication where like free rusher comes in
or somebody who just gets beat on the office line.
That didn't happen this game.
Now, you do have to take into account, President's State's D-Line, probably a lot more talented, bigger, and better than what Wagner's is.
So, like, is that just the reason why, or were they actually better?
If that will be something that we learn more about in the Missouri game, which is an even bigger jump from where it was with the President of State game.
But like I said earlier, one of my favorite things here was the depth that it showed for KU and this one.
Kansas had 10, 10 different offensive linemen who wound up with grades higher than a 70s.
She had Nolan Gorsica, Tavaki, Tuiko-Lovatu, Enrique Cruz, Kobe Baines, James Livingston, Carter Lovruski, Kenne, and Nene, and some of these guys are playing, you know, four snap.
Well, and Nene only played four snaps.
The other guys are playing double digits at least.
Calvin Clements.
And then all those guys had 70 or above overall.
So that's eight who had 70 or above overall.
So that's good.
The 10 that was counting was actually the guys by pass block.
So you had Baines, Cruz, Tuico Lovatu, Gorsica, Mercer, Kelly, that's 10 snaps,
but Wilson's 10 snaps, Levruski, Foster, Farks, that's 10 guys who had a 70 or higher in
past block grade.
Then you look to the run block grade for KU, and it's kind of more of the same.
You just have a bunch of names you can go to in terms of run block grade for office alignment
above a 70, which in the 60s is kind of just like average level starter.
So once you get 70 above, like that's impressive.
Tuolovatu, Livingston, Gorsica, Baines, Cruz, Clements, Anayne, Lebruski, Kelly.
That's what, nine guys right there from run blocking.
And again, eight overall who were higher than that.
So it's the depth of it and just a much more clean game from the KU Offensilines
you would hope against Wagner, but it's better than the alternative than being like,
oh, man, the offensive line struggled versus Wagner.
What does that mean?
No, take care of business, and they did.
And my third takeaway here is Kansas is getting really good buy-in
from their receivers. I mean, um, obviously this is important from like a receiving perspective,
obviously. But you also, I think, see it manifested in the run blocking. And that was something that I
thought, you know, that KU really core of receivers with like Grim, Skinner and Arnold, they didn't
always get the, the most credit for that they were like, you know, for the most part, they were
really getting in there and blocking, especially those couple of years with Andy Kodlnicki.
Um, and so you wondered, okay, losing those guys, what is that going to be like for K.
Well, we go back to the run block grades here.
And KU's highest graded run blocker, and this is on the season right now, is Emmanuel Henderson at 86.6.
And this was especially true in the game.
Levi Wentz is fourth on the team and an 81.6 run block rated, right?
If we're just looking specifically at what happened in this second game of the season for KU, I mean, it's again, like super impressive what the KU receivers are doing.
you have Keene Quebec at an 81 in nine run block snaps,
Emmanuel Henderson and 81 in 15 run block snaps.
Those are actually KU's two highest run blockers for the game,
obviously going against DBs and stuff.
But so Levi Wenz was 7th at a 77.3.
So you're just getting real, like, it's so important, man.
If you want to bust those big plays,
everybody's got to do it, not just the offensive line.
And so really cool to see the buy-in from the KU receivers
in what they're doing in the blocking game.
for KU as well.
All right, let's get to our goats of the game,
the good and the bad,
then we'll take an early look at Mizzou.
This is Locked on Jayhawks.
Today's episode of the show is brought to you by the game cap.
Quick question for all you college football fans out there.
If you could go back in time and sit front row at the biggest rivalry game there is,
which is this week actually, KU, Missouri.
What hat would you be wearing?
Yes, I said hat for me.
It would be the game.
Look, there's a game hat right here.
If you're watching on YouTube,
You can get this one just like that over at the gamecaps.com.
These aren't just hats.
They're the same vintage styles fans wore back in the 80s and the 90s.
And guess what?
They'll still go for the same price they did back then.
Use code locked on and you get your vintage hat for 1699.
You might be tired right now.
You're like, man, every time I'm going to look for a new hat, it's like 35, 40 bucks,

I mean, no better time of the year than this for sports, right?
I mean, I guess October would be the actual best.
But you can go to these games with game time, right?
You want to take a look at going, you still haven't gone to the new stadium,
I guess renovated stadium, whatever you want to call it, for KU football.
Boom, you can get tickets for as low as $42 against West Virginia for their next home game
in a couple weeks here.
Again, you can find tickets for that KU Missouri game.
I'm actually looking, though, at that West Virginia game right now.
You can sit in the end zone.
I'm looking at section 115 right now, row 10.
So you're right behind the end zone, $86.
You have a perfect view of the video board.
You have a perfect view of the Campanil and everything going in front of you.
And you'd watch that KU football action.

over there all right go to the game for k u against wagner early downs kansas's average third
down distance was third and three point nine you're going to win a lot of you know if you don't
of games where your average distance is third and three point nine either your defense was having a
horrible game or you just had the worst quarterback play on third down of all time i guess i don't know
uh you're going to win most games or you do that so that was really impressive early downs to
get k you in those short third downs and a big reason why was our next go jalen daniels 18 of 25
240 yards or 280 yards excuse me four touchdowns one interception had three carries for 18 yards
i also liked that we didn't have to see him run him as much right offensive line was good
care of business didn't take as many hits as the president state game that was great to see for
uh k u daniel high shaw gets a good goat for kansas just two really solid games for high shot to open
up the season 14 carries 89 yards and a touchdown over six yards per carry had that really
impressive uh what for me was the moment of the game the 20 yard rushing touchdown or then afterwards
he goes and uh kind of taps up with devon neal that was cool to see ammanuel henderson
gets a good goat for kansas mentioned the run blocking grade was you know second on the team uh in
of a game. He also said six catches for 130 yards, two touchdowns, including that 62-yard bomb from
Jalen Daniels to get us started in the second half. Easy good goat there. I'm just going to give
the entire offense a line a good goat, but if we do want to get more specific, I mentioned some of the
guys earlier. I just kind of rattled off names. Let me reiterate the top three highest rated in
kind of every area for the offense line. But overall, it's the entire offense line. Nolan
Gorsica, Tavaki, Tuiko, Lovatu, and Enrique Cruz, those who were the highest rated overall for
KU, which, by the way, very interesting that you get those is the highest rated because
Tavaki, Tuiko, Lovatu, and Nolan Gorska are guys who have been kind of thrust into
backup roles behind Amir Herring and Enrique Cruz. Now, Cruz is the other guy who's rated highly,
and I don't know if that'll, you know, those two guys performing well, you didn't play in time
at all, or if it'll stay a competition for the Missouri game. That'll be interesting. Then the pass
blocking Kobe Baines, Enrique Cruz, and Tobaki, Tuico, Lovatu were the three highest rated there.
and then in run blocking, Tavaki, Tuiko, Lovatu.
So you're just solid at everything.
James Livingston and then Nolan Gorsica were the top three in run block.
Now, it is important to remember when I'm talking about some of these guys, like Gorsica and Tavaki, Tuiko, Lobatu.
They got to go in later in the game when maybe you're playing against backups a little bit more than some of the starters did at the top.
So that is important to mention, but, you know, go dominate when you're out there.
And overall, unbelievable game for the KU offense line, as you would hope it would be against an FCS.
opponent. DJ Withers gets a good goat for KU on the defensive end of the field. Withers
had two sacks, kind of a flash game for him again. I think, I don't know, through the first
two games in season, like, I think Kenan Caldwell was kind of the flash guy for KU in the opener.
I think DJ Withers is kind of a flash guy for KU in this game. I think that's just what it's
going to be. I think that's kind of what I'm settled on at this point in time that I think the
defensive tackles, like we've mentioned before.
like they just have a bunch of like really solid players and i think what it's going to be is like
one specific game one guy flashes and makes the big plays another game it's another player
who like flashes and makes the big play so i think it'll kind of just depend game in and game
out but really good game there for dj withers uh leroy harris continues to to kind of flash for k u
he finished uh with two pressures for the game and uh harris uh you know the the young transfer
he's somebody who has a lot of years left he had a sack um i just really
like what you see. He's a long, bendy player. I think that's fun. Alex Bray, I think it's a good
goat here as well. He had two tackles in the game, including half a TFL, graded out really well
on Pro Football Focus, 74.3 grade, and he had two pressures for the game. So I've been really
impressed with what we've seen from Alex Bray so far at this point in time. Trey Lathen was KU's
highest graded player defensively on Pro Football Focus. 86.1 PFF grade, 83 in coverage, really
good for a linebacker. Also 81 tackling 78 and run defense. And, you know, as Bengali Kamara is
dealing with injury, John John Kamara gets ejected from the game. Joseph Sip has been injured. He
hasn't played yet for KU. Tray Lathan has become the constant. And I feel like he's just been
kind of like easily moving along and been really impressive for KU through their first two games
of the season. And that was the case again. In this one, as he tied for the team lead for KU
with four tackles, also had two and a half TFLs. Devin,
I graded out very, very well in terms of the pro football focused grade as well.
He was the second highest for KU among defenders.
He had an AS 78.3 grade.
And he put up some solid sets, too, four tackles and a pass breakup for KU.
He's off to a great start.
And it's hard not to think, you know, if you remember last year, like there were some inconsistencies from Dev and Die.
I mean, part of it could just be, you know, it's another year under his belt.
But the year before, when he was at Utah State, he was a really good player.
And there were some injuries he was dealing with last year.
It's hard not for me to look back at, you know, how last year went where, again, maybe it was a little bit more up and down to how good he's looked so far this season, maybe part of its role in the defense and again, another year of maturation.
But I kind of point to the fact that like maybe he was playing through some injury stuff when he was out there and it just made him not the same.
And this is what he looks like when healthy, which is like been a really good player for the KU defense.
And then overall, I would just say the coverage in general for KU was really good in the game.
I mean, you had, let's see, Lathen, Rawls, Gibbs, Dye, Graham were all players who graded out 71 or higher in coverage for Kansas.
No player was targeted more than three times for the game.
No player gave up more than two receptions for KU in the game.
It was obviously not a very good passing game for Wagner in the end.
Ezra Vodraal, the linebacker for KU, was the only Jayhawk on defense who gave up more than 15 yards receiving.
And that was just a play where it seemed like Kansas got kind of.
kind of mixed up and had a linebacker on a slot receiver who got wide open.
That was the play.
They scored the touchdown from the slot on the fourth down.
But yeah, overall the coverage I thought was really sticky for KU.
Now, what about bad goats?
Now, KU blew this one out.
So, you know, not really many bad goats that we want to get to.
And we're not going to.
I will say the turnovers, that would be one of them.
You have to tighten up those turnovers coming into the Missouri game.
Two turnovers for Kansas.
That's fine in this specific game.
It's also like one is on a fourth down in the end zone and the other.
You can't, especially at the end of half one.
The end of half, I mentioned this.
Like, I understood what happened there, but it also can't happen against Missouri.
That would be a game swinging play at the end of half if that happened.
So you got to lock those down for the Missouri game.
The injury to Bengali Kamara.
That's the other kind of bad goat here.
And that's not game specific because it didn't happen in the game,
but it happened in the week of practice leading up to the game.
Now, Pete Nacos of On Three Sports tweeted this out earlier,
and it said Kansas linebacker Bengali Kamara,
who suffered a non-contact injury in practice last week,
we'll miss at least a few weeks.
Now, again, a non-contact injury
that makes you think it could be pretty bad.
The idea, though, that they're saying it could be a few weeks.
That almost implies to me that you're expecting him back later in the year.
Now, could it be three, four, five weeks?
Sure, maybe it is.
But at least that makes me think that it's not season ending.
At least it's making me hope that that is the case.
But that just means more pressure on, yeah,
Trey Layton and John Tomara
and maybe more pressure to get Joseph Sip back from injury.
I have no idea what his injury is right now,
but it is unfortunate for KU because quickly this lineback record
that felt like the most athletic and most talented linebacker core
of the Lance Leopold era has quickly gotten injured down to a point
where it's like, oh, man, they're playing a walk on it,
Ezra Vodra, a lot of snaps and a lot of minutes and stuff,
and they got guys who are injured, they're playing.
So, yeah, hopefully that doesn't come back on KU against Missouri.
The good news is, though, they've got that bye week right after the Missouri game,
that could really help with some of that rest and recovery for that linebacker unit.
All right, speaking of Missouri, let's take an early look at the Tigers next.

All right, early look at the Missouri Tigers.
and thank you that every day
is we've already been catching all our, you know,
off-season content specifically where we broke this game down
in depth a few times.
But Missouri's coming off back-to-back double-digit win seasons.
So it's been a very impressive program what Eli Drinkwitz has been able to do over in Columbia.
Now, they did have a bit of an easier schedule compared to maybe like a Georgia,
for instance, last year.
They did really well in one-score games.
You look at some of the metrics and some of the game grader stuff,
and maybe they weren't quite as good as the record last year.
Another team two years ago, very, very good.
But does that revert this year?
Or are they just a team who's going to consistently overperform?
Some teams are like that.
Like Iowa, under Kirk Farrants, consistently has overperformed some of those, you know, metric things or some of the, you know, one score game type of things.
And maybe that's just going to be Missouri's thing.
Maybe they are just, you know, successful in that area.
But they've recruited and hit the portal well.
They have a really stellar defense.
A lot of returning defenders from what was a good defense from a year ago.
And on top of it, they brought it.
They brought in some really talented transfers, brought in some Georgia transfers on the defensive line.
So it's a very good defense.
The offense clearly has talent, but it's a lot more inexperienced or new players filling into new spots.
But clearly they look pretty good with the 61 points they put up on Central Arkansas on the opener.
And again, it's Central Arkansas, so it's tough to like take too much away.
You know, like certain things just aren't going to apply in other games as they are in the Central Arkansas.
game. But, you know, I mentioned this on a previous show. Would you rather be
Missouri who beat Central Arkansas 61 to 6? And you don't have any, you know, maybe you don't
like, oh, they're going to win the national title because they beat Central Arkansas 61.
Like, no, you don't get to that point. But would you rather have that or would you rather
have what Kansas states dealing with this week where it's like, oh, my gosh, what's wrong
with the team? They only beat North Dakota by three. You know, we've seen that plenty of times with
Kansas losing to FCS team. So like, yes, I don't know what we haven't really seen the negatives
for Missouri yet. There are going to be some
negatives. There just always are for every team
but also at the same point
of time, I'm not going to overreact to them putting up
61 on Central Arkansas, right? It's kind of
finding that happy medium. But, you know, I mentioned
this at the start of this segment.
Something I find very interesting,
Missouri was 6 and 1
in one score games
a season ago. Kansas was
1 in 5 in 1 score games.
So you hear
it a lot, the one score reversion
and again some teams it reverts other teams it doesn't and you know college football a little different
than the NFL typically in the NFL the teams who are going to win most of the one score games teams
are the good quarterbacks you know but also most of the games in the NFL are decided by like one
or two scores college football is a little different college football typically tends to be like
you know one year to the next a lot of times the teams are going to you know it does kind of
ebb and flow in terms of the one score games and some teams have been able to overcome that.
But if ever there was time for a reversion to the one score games, I mean, this is projected
to be a one score game. This would be the perfect time for Kansas. They get their reversion up.
Missouri's one score game reversion goes down. Boom, Kansas wins. At least that's the hope for
this game in Columbia. All right. That'll do it for this episode of Lockdown, Jayhawks.
