Late Night in the Fog happened, and yeah, Darren Peterson's pretty good at basketball.
You are Locked-on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What's going on, Derek Johnson here, a little bonus episode on your Friday night.
Late Night in the Fog officially in the books, The Crimson Team, going to have bragging rights for 300.
165 days of a 27 to 23 victory over the blue team.
We're going to break down what happened, including how did we, I don't know, just a
interesting night, but we did thank you to Michael Swain of fog.net for posting the video of
the scrimmage of late night in the fog without him.
We would not have the ability to do this.
So thank you to Michael and shout out to Mike, who always does a great work over at fog.
But we're going to be breaking down the game.
Darren Peterson, it's hard to say as advertised.
It's a random scrimmage, but he looks pretty good.
a basketball, it turns out.
We'll also get some of our other takeaways, I guess you can have from this first game
and the best from Bill Self, things that we've heard from Bill Self over at late night in
The Fog.
Let's start right there with Darren Peterson.
Because, again, this is an event that just in general is going to be sloppy basketball.
It's a scrimmage among your team.
You've been practicing against each other.
You know what you like to do.
It's not really set up to be, you know, it's also early in the season.
It's not set up to be like, oh, you're going to be watching, I don't know,
know, 2018 Villanova against 2007 Florida.
Like, that's not what these things are going to be.
And so there is a level of sloppiness.
There are certain passes that go out of bounds.
There's certain miscommunications.
There's, I know, especially two for this Kansas team that is probably going to be viewed as
more of a defensive team and has a lot of length.
It's not going to be the prettiest site.
But with Darren Peterson, he still made it look relatively easy.
I mean, he didn't hit a three.
Nobody was hitting threes for KU.
He goes 0 for 4 from 3, but he still finished 6.
of 12 from the floor he still finished with 12 points was led everybody in scoring and it was just
the approach and what it looked like out there and again this is coming from the the video that
michael swing had because for whatever reason they decided not to broadcast it or televised it
which that kind of was unfortunate so if anybody was there at the game great on you um but peterson
i mean it's a 50 point scrimmage that's a 15 minute like basically running clock and he put up
12 points. There's not a long list of guys who have put up 20 or more points per game under
Bill Self for a full season. It's what, Frank Mason, Wayne Simeon, and I think O'Chai ended up
just short of it. I think for a lot of the season, he was above it, but he ended up just short
of that. Either way, the list is very short in terms of the guys who are going to be able to do
that. I feel pretty good about Darren Peterson, then he's going to be one of those guys that's going
to surpass that, which is crazy to say when it is a list that short for Bill Self. And it's just
it it okay sure it is about the 12 points in the 50 you know point scrimmage and stuff but it's it's more
than that to me it's how you look because again this is not set up to be some offensively
dynamic game it's just when you watch him out there you see the movements you see the
the the the just what he looks like i don't know like the physicality the because that's the thing
that really stood out to me and watching it it's like this dude is the freshman and he looks like
he's already built. He looks already strong. He looks already like, I don't know, he looks like
he's a fifth year senior, basically, in a certain way in how he goes about it and how he moves
in the seamless dribbles that he puts between his legs. He just looks like a pro at all times.
I don't really know how else to describe it other than you just see it. And it felt like an easy
12, it felt like a very smooth 12 points for him in a game where there wasn't like necessarily like
a bunch of just crazy Darren Peters
and highlights and he still found his way to that
on efficient numbers.
The highlight that sticks out to me is the one
that it was earlier on in scrimmage.
He's driving down the lane
and I'm pretty sure he finished with his left
hand over Paulumbia
which Paulumbia is large, gigantic, long.
He has like a seven foot nine wingspan.
He was able to finish over him and that is just like
chef's kiss. That is a pro move right there.
Right. And so I guess
that's what it is. Like this is not going
determine how good of a season Darren Peterson has or doesn't it's just the idea that we continue
to like hear all these great stories and build up this hype and now you actually saw some of it
and it felt like there was tangible proof as to why all that hype is there and I will say too
like in regards to Darren Peterson I think Florida Bedunga is going to benefit greatly from playing
with Darren Peterson I think you saw it there was at least one moment where so Peterson takes like
a he like drives into the lane and then kind of like stops and then pivots and shoots kind of a
fading little, I don't know, like six-foot mid-range type of shot. I honestly don't remember
if the shot went in or not. I just remember seeing two guys going out to contest it and Flory
Bidunga was wide open. Again, I don't remember did Floree like get the rebound and throw it back
down or did it go in or what? But I just remembered seeing the actual process of the play going
there's going to be so often that Darren Peterson gets into the lane or gets into the mid-range,
draws a second defender, and who's it going to leave open? It's going to leave Flore Bidonga.
whether that gets dunked by Florey off a drop-off pass or if it just leads the, hey, now nobody's boxing out Florey, and he's going to get the offense of rebound and get the putback.
I think that's going to be, you know, really beneficial for Flory playing with Peterson.
Let's get some of our other main takeaways, including Paul Mbia.
Boy, is, yeah, you can see the wingspan out there in a lot of ways.
Jaina Dawson didn't play.
More on Flory Budunga, Cole Rosario, Melvin Council.
We'll get to all that next.
This is Locked on Jayhawks.
Our bonus episode of the show today is brought to you by DoorDash.
It is the weekend, and time to look back and crown this week's MVP on who delivered.
Powered by DoorDash, just like you can win every Saturday with DoorDash streaks,
saving more every time you order.
These players delivered when it mattered most.
Let's break it down for the Kansas Jayhawks at late night in the fog.
Darren Peterson delivered in a big way 12 points, a dozen points in a game where his team scored 27 points.
He had almost half of the output.
Obviously, in season, you don't want it to be half the output unless he's scoring 50 a game,
then that's great. But he's pretty good at basketball. And I think we saw a little bit of that
in a very limited sample size here. And just like Darren Peterson, it delivered for Kansas and
the Crimson team in late Night in the fog. DoorDash delivers your Saturdays with DoorDash
Streaks. Save every Saturday order. Stack it up all season. And you could save up to $250,
including $100 in DoorDash credits. Order this Saturday. Keep the streak alive. Fuel your game day
only with DoorDash. Terms apply promo period through November 18th.

So that's pretty exciting there.
Also have our KUK State preview of the KU Louisville preview next week.
We're going to have Big 12 Media Day content coming at you out from Wednesday.
That'll carry over to the next couple weeks on it.
honestly and yeah plenty coming out just make sure you subscribe to the show starting next week
with locked on jahawks anywhere you get your podcast or on our youtube page so some other takeaways
from the scrimmage again realistically you can't take away too much from an event like this
and in fact uh you know bill self i think said it perfectly we're going to get into some of the
stuff that bill self said in the post game but i'm just going to give this one right now uh he said
that he wasn't overly pleased with any element of tonight's scrimmage but also wasn't unhappy with
anything says at his age he's not going to worry about these things that aren't relevant to the
season and he's right this doesn't really matter but guess what we haven't been in practice
every day we haven't seen practice every day and seen every player so like for us this is more
of a i don't know what a learning experience than it is for bill self like for bill self all the
practices are going to matter way more than this but for us this at least gives us a little bit
of insight you would think into uh you know there's something here there um
So Paul and Bia to me, and that's the other thing.
Like when I'm trying to have takeaways from this game, because of that, I'm trying not to be like, oh, this is what you did in the box score.
I'm trying to take away things that I'm like, okay, like I said, like with Darren Peterson, it was less about the 12 points.
It was more how it looked.
And it was more about with Flory, like, oh, this is how he reacted to a play of Peterson.
Things that I think can carry over from a silly event like this into the long term because they are more like what they are.
And that's the thing.
Like, Paul Mbia's length and how big he is and his size, that's going to carry over into games.
And so you saw that in certain plays.
You saw that in the putback that he had.
You saw that in the, there was a play where L. Marco Jackson is driving into the lane.
And Mbia is just playing stout defense with his arms up.
And it's like throwing it into the redwood trees and he can't get by him.
And because that Mbia gets like a steal and leads out a break the other way.
You see him just affecting drives.
You see him having a two-handed dunk, and it's just those moments where it's like, okay, that felt as advertised with Paul Mbia.
I also thought that you saw the added comfortability, something the Bill Self talked about earlier this week, of Flory Bedunga on the perimeter, handling the ball, passing.
You know, I think that's going to be helpful for KU because if you can at least run a little bit of offense with Flory, you know, if he pulls the other center out, it's just going to open up the spacing and the floor for everybody else on the team.
but he has to be able to do it to take advantage of that.
And I thought you saw him have a couple dribbles and handling it up top,
at least a little bit there.
The most impressive play, though, in this regard was he had a really good pass.
It was after he had it in the back court and he threw ahead a skip pass
that bounced to Wilder Evers behind the defense that had to fit kind of in a tight window
to get by it and ended up being an easy bucket for Wilder Evers and KU.
And I just thought that was impressive to show some of the growth for Flory there.
Obviously, the three-point shooting, if you're looking at the box score, it's going to stick out.
They go two of 15.
I kind of settle off-season, like, and I think a lot of people are, you know, this isn't
an exclusive tag, is what a lot of people think.
Like, oh, what is the three-point shooting on this team going to be?
I don't know that it's going to be like that great.
And this doesn't change my opinion, but if they would have went seven of 15, it wouldn't
have changed my opinion either.
So the fact that they go two of 15 from three doesn't add any extra worry to me.
I just see it and go, oh,
yeah well that's kind of how I think I don't think it's going to go that bad this season you're not
going to go to 15 every game but that just feels like it's something where it's like no matter what
I saw the number as it's one small sample game whether they did well whether they did bad at it
I was just going to kind of hold my beliefs from the offseason on what I thought the shooting on
this team would be you know I want to learn more in the louisville game and the season opener and stuff
like that but this one wasn't really one I was going to evaluate that too much and so I'm
still not now, with them going to a 15.
Obviously, no Jaden Dawson in the game, so he's nursing the knee injury.
I would imagine, I don't know, like, do you play him in the exhibitions?
If he's hurt at all, why even, like, bother?
Why even, I don't know, why even, like, risk it, I guess.
So, like, I don't know that you'll see him in the Louisville game.
We'll see.
And then my favorite play is actually two, but it was basically the same play, theoretically.
Melvin Council threw two Alley Ups to Cole Rosario.
He got him twice.
And that was just really cool to see in terms of the, I guess one,
like good thing that Melvin Council can throw a good alleyup because he's probably
going to have a lot of those, whether it's Colerzario, whether it's Paul Ambio,
whether it's Flurbedounga, right, whoever.
But you see the bounce on Cole Rosario.
He's basically a shooting guard who's probably going to play a lot of three for this team.
But you see his bounce to be able to get up there and throw.
it down. So that was certainly cool to see. Let's finish up with some of the best stuff
that Bill Self had to say in postgame. This is Locked on Jayhawks. This episode of the show

So some of the best stuff from Bill's self,
I mentioned the one comment that he had earlier about just being like,
you know what, I'm just going to, you know, it is what it is.
He also mentioned this was, I believe, in the,
the when he's like talking to the crowd from the mic said i do love this team this team is fun
this team is fast this team has a blend of youthful exuberance and some vets and you know something
last year's team did okay but okay the university of kansas is not good enough so you know
that's clearly good to hear um we also kind of a cool moment as zeke mayo apparently
got a contract with the cleveland cavaliers i don't know to what extent i don't know is it a two
a exhibit 10 like minimum deal or what either way great news for zeke mayo you know local lawrence
it building himself up from Lawrence High Legend to going to South Dakota State having
success there and put up 14 points per game at Kansas and now having a shot in the NBA
where I mean the thing about Zeke is that like the shooting is so good that he can stick
because in the NBA if you can like perfect essentially if you can like knock out like one
specific role you can essentially get on the floor at least as a complimentary piece in that
way. So really cool on Zeke for that being the case. This is a cool quote from from Bill
stuff talking about Darren Peterson, kind of going back to what we talked about at the beginning.
He didn't make any shots today. I don't know that the that I like the shot selection for the
most part. Quick aside for me, he had some step back jumpers and kind of stuff like that.
But anyway, but they were just out there jacking around to be honest with you. But he's a talented
kid. I mean, you can just tell by the way it moves. He moves at a controlled pace, change of speed,
directions. That's pretty fluid. So now it sounds like I copied my take.
from Bill Self, which would honestly be a pretty good place to copy my takes from. So, you know,
that's not the worst thing in the world. He also mentioned on Trey White. We continue to go back to
the idea that, like, seems like he's been very impressive. Has Trey impressed me? Absolutely. I think
Trey has certainly played at a pretty elite level, and he shot it so well in practice this
far, even though he didn't make any shots tonight. He's going to be hard to keep out of the lineup for
sure. I mean, I feel like he's kind of a lock to be a starter. The question is, how many
minutes. We're talking 28 minutes, 30, 32, 35 minutes for Trey White. Who knows? I think that's going to be
really interesting there. And the part that he's making all these shots in practice, that to me is
the biggest part of that quote in terms of like, I don't know, like going back to the questions
about you have the shooting. If Trey White can be a 35 percent three-point shooter on three attempts
per game, that would be huge for this team opening up the floor in a lot.
lot of ways. I don't know for this episode of Locked on Jayhawks. You can find our show anywhere
