Starting point is 00:00:00 Very identical score and result for KU in day two of the players era. Defense continued to impress some lulls from the offense. But hey, they've got a couple wins post-Daron Peterson. We've got to see Jamari McDowell start, a little bit of a different look for KU. We're going to break it all down on this episode of Lockdown Jayhawks. You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked-on podcast network. Your Team Every Day. What's going on? Derek Johnson here.
Starting point is 00:00:35 This is Locked on Jayhawks. Thank you for making the Lockdown Podcast Network, the number one sports podcast network. And on today's edition of Locked on Jayhawks, we're going to be breaking down KU 71 to 60 victory over Syracuse. We get to our Game Award, stats of the game, moments of the game, game balls, all that, as well as what's next for KU in this complicated players-era tournament.
Starting point is 00:00:58 Today's episode of the show is brought to you by game time. If you're out in Vegas, you can get tickets to the event. And I'm telling you, there's a lot of tickets available from what I'm seeing on TV. So, uh, download the game time app, create an account and use code locked on college for $20 off your first purchase with game time. It's Kansas 71, Syracuse 60, nearly an identical score to yesterday when Kansas won 71 to 61 over Notre Dame. It is funny because Kansas is now 61st on offense on Ken Palm, which would be the worst offense of the Bill Self-Hara, but they're 10th on defense. Obviously that offensive number like Once you get Darren Peterson back, it's just a completely different story.
Starting point is 00:01:32 But this was another just solid win for KU. It gets a little heated there when it's 52 to 50. It gets a little dicey. And then you hit some big shots, you pull away. And to have those moments of, hey, they're on a run. You can't score the basketball. It's now a two-point game. There's a little bit of pressure on you.
Starting point is 00:01:50 You're without your best player. And you find a way to respond and answer. That is what a Bill Self team does. And you end up winning the game. game, you know, again, without too much stress at least over the last at least minute and a half, two minutes, two and a half minutes of the game, which is a good thing for KU. And I think we look at this one and, you know, it wasn't necessarily like the same recipe as last game in terms of like, okay, the two bigs were still good for Kansas in this one, but they
Starting point is 00:02:19 weren't utterly dominant as they were in the game against Notre Dame. You got a little bit more contributions elsewhere. But I think the thing that carried over the most was just the defense. I mean, you've now given up 60 and a half points per game over your two games in the players era. And Syracuse has some warts on the offensive end, but still, to hold any, you know, power opponent, let alone one Syracuse, who just took Houston to overtime earlier in this tournament to 32% from the floor is very impressive, right? There are certain things that I wish Kansas was getting more of like steals on the defensive end. But the rim protection, the shot blocking, the overall defense the KU is showing right now is really, really fun. And that's even without Peterson, who as much as we talk about for good reason, Peterson's shot making an offensive ability.
Starting point is 00:03:08 Peterson's a 6'5 guard wing with a 611, 610 wingspan, who's going to be a good defender who's a good competitor as well. So like the defense is only going to potentially get better when Darren Peterson comes in the lineup as well. But overall, yeah, that two big basketball, I think, has kind of been the story for me so far. If you're just looking at these two games collectively, and in this game for KU, Florey and Tiller combined for 24 points. They were 10 of 17 from the floor. Florey, not as much of a scoring game, and he did turn it over way too much. But he had 14 rebounds.
Starting point is 00:03:40 He still at least had some assists with three of them. The rebounds were huge for KU. We mentioned coming in, Syracuse, not a great rebounding team. Kansas had not been a good offensive rebounding team coming in. Well, they responded in this one, 13 offensive rebounds for KU when I think they really needed it against the Syracuse defense that's lengthy. And that was a way for, you know, KU to get some extra shots and extra possessions and opportunities often. In fact, arguably the biggest moment of the game was off an offensive rebound for KU. Stick around for that for moments of the game a little later.
Starting point is 00:04:08 But Tiller as well, 11 points, eight rebounds. So, I mean, from your starting front court, you're getting 24 points, 22 rebounds. Like that is good work. And then you basically add Trey White, who's a three, but in other lineups is a four. So if you had him into the front court conversation, 15 and 10 with three assists for Trey White, who had a bit of a slow start to the game, and boy, did he pick it up and kind of accelerate to the finish line, White continues to be so good. And, you know, maybe that'll be the, it's interesting because there's the one case to
Starting point is 00:04:35 be made when Peterson comes back. Everybody has to adjust slightly and slightly get into different roles, potentially, and how does that affect them? At the same point in time, the confidence and the playing ability that some of these players are getting without Peterson could also work. out really well for KU in the long run, right? And so I think all of those are good. Obviously, again, the defense is kind of the thing that carries the day here.
Starting point is 00:04:57 A low block game for KU only had four of them, which for a lot of teams, four is actually like a decent number, but for KU, that's actually on the lower end. But again, overall, you just make life difficult on Syracuse. And the way I see it too, like Syracuse is not a team who shot super well from three coming into this game. The fact that Syracuse goes seven of 30 from three, and you could say, okay, over the two games like the teams that you've played have not shot well from three and is there a little bit in that yeah probably a little bit like maybe here or there like as the other team missed an open
Starting point is 00:05:27 three here there yes like also you know guys are going to miss open three they're going to make every open three and at the same point in time like are you forcing contested threes it feels like kansas is forcing a lot of threes that are three four feet behind the three point line right um it feels like they're just they're getting hands up there more than they were the last couple of years And I think above all, it's this. Sometimes in years past against the Kansas defense, the three-point shot was the open shot. It was the good shot for the offense. It was the shot that they ran the offense into and were able to get an open look against Kansas.
Starting point is 00:06:04 And it's almost like against this year's Kansas defense, at least so far, the three-point shot is more of a, oh, we have to shoot a three because we can't do anything else. like a combination of, sure, there are times where a guard gets beat or there are times where when KU gives up a back cut or whatever. But the overall, KU's done a pretty good job really since the North Carolina game. And again, few instances against Duke and stuff of preventing those things. And again, I go back to this, circling back around what I was just about to get into. Syracuse is not a great three-point shooting team. I would be skeptical if their game plan coming into this game was, hey, we want to launch up
Starting point is 00:06:43 33s. They took 33 two-pointers. They took 33-pointers. So they only took three more two-pointers than they took three-pointers in this game. And again, the reason I bring that up is because I do not think that was in the Syracuse DNA. They came overall for the season, even including the Kansas game, only 38% of their shots have come from three. They are only shooting on the season 29.5% from three. Yet they wound up having to take all of those threes. Why would that be, you might ask. Probably because Kansas is doing a pretty good job of limiting drives, probably a pretty good job of having two big men in there that are deterring things. Probably a lot of Flory Budunga, hey, we have this elite shot blocker inside,
Starting point is 00:07:24 and he's going to scare you away from the rim. That is so, so important. And I do think it is really good to bring up that Kansas is almost, I don't know, they're scaring other teams from wanting to go inside on them. And that is such a big thing here. I think some of the other positives. I think second half, Melvin Council is officially a thing. We've seen some bit of a clunkers in the first half here and there for counsel, but the second half, he's really turned it on in a couple of these games for KU. And then Jamari McDowell, is he like a legit role player now? You know, when, first of all, I liked Cole Rosario off the bench. I feel like, okay, let's keep in mind. This kid are reclassified in. And I know there was all the talk and the
Starting point is 00:08:02 hype in the off season. He just feels like he at the beginning of the season was more mental than it was physical like the pressure of everything i think coming off the bench kind of helps rosario like i think in the short term that might be the best way to get him comfortable because he was he was better in this game than he was in the previous game um you know it wasn't the best game in the world for corrizaria but seven points three rebounds in 20 minutes i think was better than the previous game for him i think it helps him i think for jimari mcdowl like he looked good as a role player right he he stays in front of guys he's he's a solid enough defender he can hit a couple three's for you. He's going to hustle for you. It's not the most talented role player KU's ever
Starting point is 00:08:41 had, but he's doing his job. And I think when Darren Peterson comes back, it's going to be a very, very interesting conversation of should Jamari McDowell said, like, is how Marco Jackson going to fall out of the rotation? Because he struggled a bit. And with Jamari McDowell getting these role minutes and performing well, and clearly he has Bill's trust, he played 34 minutes. And again, you could say what other options did he have with some of the injuries for KU? I mean, they could have played Ging G. G. And they could have played on Marco Jackson more than eight minutes. I think there's a good chance that, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:10 in a big game when Darren Peterson's back, that on Marco is going to be out of the rotation right now. Now, some of the biggest negatives for KU, the lack of forcing turnovers, again, I don't know what's up with that. Just two forced turnovers. With all the blocked shots and the length and the wingspan and athleticism that this KU team has,
Starting point is 00:09:25 you would think they would be better at forcing turnovers. And that's something I'm going to be tracking all year long because this is a really good team scoring off turnovers. This is a really good team in transition. So they need to be able to force more of those Maybe just by having Peterson back, that'll give them more lineup versatility and length kind of at the guard position. They'll allow them to do that a little bit more. But just two steals this game.
Starting point is 00:09:45 I think they just had two steals last game against Notre Dame as well. The turnovers for KU were obviously a big problem. They had 15 of them, which I guess if you forced like 12, 15 would be a bit of a higher number, but it wouldn't be like a giant outburst. But when you see 15 to 2, it does make it look like a lot worse. I guess at the end of the day, it was 9 to 0 and points off turnover. So, you know, Kansas could have won this game by 20 and maxed out there plus minus in this game for the players era tournament. But, yeah, a lot of them were the big men, too.
Starting point is 00:10:15 Like, you got seven from Florey. You had three from Trey White. And I get there's going to be certain ones that happened. It almost felt like Flory was doing too much. He had a big assist game, five assists in the previous game. This was a more athletic team. And I think it may be trying to do a little bit too much passing after the previous game. And again, some more athletic team came back to hurt him a little bit more.
Starting point is 00:10:34 But again, that's one of those things where it's like when Peterson's back for KU, he'll have the ball more. So the idea of the hope would be those numbers go up. And then the last big negative was the Jamari McDowell getting the hook and I don't know how that's not a hook and hold. First of all, if the whole idea of the hook and hold is to call a foul on a guy to prevent an injury where you're basically popping his shoulder out of the socket, then how is that not a hook and hold? Because that literally almost just, maybe it did against Jammari McDowell. So that would have sucked and you hope he's okay, especially with all the injuries, KU's already suffered specifically to that kind of two.
Starting point is 00:11:04 guard position. But overall here, an 11 point win, again, if you were told me coming in this week, KU was going to win two games, or their first two games, I should say, right? You want to win the third two. Win their first two games without Darren Peterson by double digits, both games against power opponents. I'd have been like, sure, sign me up, right? And so for that notion, it's not perfect. There's certain things to work on, but I'm as content as can be with these first two games for KU. Let's give to our game awards, moments of the game, stats of the game, all that and more. This is Locked on Jayhawks. Today's episode of the show was brought to you by Fandual Sportsbook.

Starting point is 00:12:25 We'll have some KU Utah content coming at you later in the week. and we will also get some more KU basketball as the week continues on here. All right, moments of plays of the game. The moment early on, this was probably my favorite play of the game. It's earlier in the game. So maybe it's not the moment of the game, but it is my favorite. Florey gets a block. It leads to a loose ball.
Starting point is 00:12:50 Trey White dives on the floor. And then Trey White's surrounded by like two or three Syracuse players. And you're sitting there like, okay, maybe just call time out, keep possession. He somehow gets it around those. players through the trees, so to speak. It gets off to Melvin Council and now KU has numbers. And Council and Rosario are playing like a little, I made a happy Gilmore reference yesterday. Maybe I'll just make a Happy Gilmore reference in every episode.
Starting point is 00:13:12 The OG Happy Gilmore. We ain't messing around the second one. Anyway, if you remember in Happy Gilmore like at the end, spoiler alert, sorry for a movie 30 years old, he putts it and there's the crazy like the stand has fallen over. And it's basically like an ultimate game of mini golf. And at one point, it's like going back and forth on the, the rails or whatever, and you just, it cuts to the crowd. They're done, dun, dun, dun, dun, and they're just, that's the thing. That's what you were watching with the Cole Rosario and Melvin Council thing, right?
Starting point is 00:13:42 It was just like pass, back, blah, blah, blah, and then you throw the alley-up to Rosario, and that was certainly a fun play with just four of the five players on the floor. Actually, all five players were involved because the fifth player on the floor was Jamari McDowell, and he was the one who walled up the defender, kept him in front of him, and not allowed for Florey to come over and get kind of the chase block. The Batunga block off Kean Anthony that went out off Syracuse, too. That was just kind of a fun moment. Like, I don't know, it felt good blocking in Anthony after certainly with the KU passed with,
Starting point is 00:14:12 with Syracuse and Carmelo Anthony. I think maybe the biggest play of the game, though, go back to those offensive rebounds. Kansas was struggling to score the basketball. They hadn't made a field goal, and it was like over four minutes or something like that. Syracuse is on a bit of a run. They make it 52 to 50. Kansas misses the first shot,
Starting point is 00:14:29 but Flory Bedunga, who had 14 rebounds, grabs the offensive miss, puts it back up and in. Kansas goes up four, and then you get moments later, Trey White gets an and one. It puts you up 57 to 50. That was kind of the sequence of the game
Starting point is 00:14:43 that won it for KU, but that play for Flore with the offensive rebound and put back. That is our play of the game specifically. And then just a fun one to finish, the exclamation dunk from Cole Rosario, where he certainly got up there and threw down a hard one. That was a fun one there.
Starting point is 00:14:58 All right, our stat of the game, we could go with Syracuse shooting just 32% from the floor. I do think part of it, though, again, them only shooting 332s and 33s. Like, that tells a big part of the story to me. The rebounds as well, 49 to 29, where it's 13 to 11 on the offensive glass when they're missing, you know, 13 more shots than you and you're still out offensive rebounding them, even though they had more opportunities to do so. That certainly sticks out to 34 to 20. 26 points in the paint. You know, that's an eight-point difference there.
Starting point is 00:15:29 That certainly sticks out. Kansas leading for 37 minutes and 21 seconds. That certainly sticks out. But I am going to go with holding Syracuse to 32% from the floor, which Kansas defense has been rock solid and stellar so far in this tournament. Our awards of the game is the Thanksgiving Fixin's Award. It felt like for a moment there was the official. where in Vegas, was the official trying to,
Starting point is 00:15:58 I'm not saying he was trying to make Syracuse win, but was he trying to get Syracuse within the magic number, so to speak, right? Trey White gets pushed in the back. He gets called for a foul on the free throw. That was like, what's going on there? You know, I don't know. Jermari McDowell should have been a hook and hold, and he gets called for a foul.
Starting point is 00:16:18 I don't know. Felt a little fishy there for a second. Or he was like, okay, maybe this guy's cool with Kansas winning, but is he trying to get it within the number? I don't know. Maybe a little investigation there. Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for, and that would be William Kyle free throws.
Starting point is 00:16:32 That was ugly. That was rough for my man, one of six, the free throw line. Very good to vendor, super springy athlete. I actually like watching him play. But I legit, like the first couple,
Starting point is 00:16:43 it's like, oh, great, this is helping Kansas. Yeah, he's missing free throws. And then eventually gets a point where you start to actually, like, I kind of feel bad at the end of it there, but, you know, he's still a good player. So very good athlete. But yeah, the dog, play of the game.
Starting point is 00:16:58 I think we're going to start doing that one every game, right? We got to do it. Melvin Council's on the team. If you ain't a dog, you dog food. And Melvin Council is going to win our inaugural dog of the game or dog play of the game. So counsel actually, you know, not the most efficient game for Melvin Council, say the least. Three of 15 from the floor, which I think was, I think he was 0 of 7 in the first half, so three of eight from the field in the second half. So certainly not the most efficient either, but it was better.
Starting point is 00:17:25 Um, but hit a lot of free throws in the second half, though, too. And he misses the first. He misses the second on a tip. He gets the third on the rebound, dribbles it out, takes some clock, ends up getting fouled, makes his free throws. It's those plays where it's not always pretty, but he's going to keep grinding. He's going to keep hustling. And, you know, there is a world where, yeah, we are talking here like, oh, man, I can't believe Melman counsel's 315. Why does he keep shooting? This is what I mentioned on the show the other day. Somebody has to take the shots for Kansas. You, you you're watching some of these half-core possessions. They're getting down late in the shot clock, and it's like, oh, no, who's going to shoot it? And so that puts you in a tough spot. And like, here's the other thing why I'm not concerned about it in the long term is that eventually those shots are going to go to Darren Peterson. At least that's the hope, right, that he's going to eat healthy,
Starting point is 00:18:09 and those shots are going to go to Peterson. And then counsel's role is different, and he's not three of 15. Maybe he's, you know, two of eight. And it's just kind of a different world that you're kind of looking at there. All right, let's finish up here with some game balls. And what is next for KU in this wild, wacky tournament format. You can find our show anywhere you get your podcast, including on our YouTube page where you can like and subscribe to the show. And what is next for KU basketball? We'll get to that here as well as getting into our game balls, so speak. Why can't I think of words?
Starting point is 00:19:50 Okay, well, let's start with our offensive game balls here for KU. So balance scoring, all five starters for KU with nine or more points. Trey White leads Kansas with 15 points for the Jayhawks. So certainly those would stick out when you're having this conversation. I do think, you know, Badunga's just offensive presence has mattered a lot. He got four offensive rebounds, 13 points. So he's up there, but the seven turnovers, I can't pick him in this one. Bryson Tiller, 11 points.
Starting point is 00:20:19 That's nice. I am going to go to Trey White. He had a bit of a slow start to this one. Trey White was one of three in the first half. But in the second half, he had 12 points when you really needed it. He had six rebounds in the second half, two on the offensive glass. Six of six of the foul line in the second half. He hit that big end one for you, which pushed it back to a three possession lead.
Starting point is 00:20:38 Trey White is going to get our offensive game ball here. Honestly, I could make an argument for Jammari McDowell just in terms of compared to what is expected of you, the role, to give you nine points, to give you a couple threes. That was important for KU had two assists to zero turnovers in a game that Kansas turned the ball over a lot. but I am going to give it to Trey White. And then the defensive game ball for KU, I'm going to go with Flory Badunga again. Florey had one of two steals for KU.
Starting point is 00:21:00 The other was Col Rosario. Florey had half of the KU blocks as well. He had two of them of the four. And again, going back to the idea that basically half of Syracuse shots were from three, from a team that doesn't normally shoot well from three. It kind of is a tip of the cap and not of respect to Flore's defense. And what he can bring on the defensive end that they were like, Nah, we don't want anything in there on Flores.
Starting point is 00:21:24 So he's going to get our defensive game ball. And then our overall game ball for KU, we're going to shoot. That's tough as well. Let's just, let's, again, I can't give it to Flory with the seven turnovers, but it's 13 points, 14 rebounds. It's in the defensive game ball, man, I don't know. I might do it anyway. Screw it.
Starting point is 00:21:44 Seven turnovers and all. Flore is getting our overall game ball here for KU with this threat and everything that he brings to the table. Okay. Now, what is next for KU? So you might be wondering about the format. So it's 18 teams. It's not a bracket. It's kind of a weird thing. So basically this is this is round robin. And how they put this is they have the standings of all 18 teams. So you have your two and O teams, one and one teams and your own two teams. Everybody is sorted by your record. So then once the records are completed, how do they break the ties between the two teams? Then it goes to point differential. And after that, I believe it goes to head to head. But if there's multiple teams, team's tied. I don't know how that works because you're not going to have played everybody, right? So I guess if it's just you and one other team, which doesn't seem possible. Anyway, then it goes to like, I think the next one is like points forward, points four. And it's like points allowed. So anyway, point being, as we're recording right now, there's a lot of teams
Starting point is 00:22:38 either playing or that have to play later tonight that have a chance to get to two and no. So right now, as I'm speaking, there are two teams. or two and oh it's kansas and iowa state uh kansas with a better point differential plus twenty one iowa state plus 19 this is where it's kind of silly though like iowa state objectively has played a tougher schedule they had to you know play uh a top 15 st john's team and then they played crayton uh but you know whatever it's a weird wacky silly tournament um so point being kansas is at least ahead of iowa state among the two and o teams you have tennessee and houston among the seven one and o teams they play each other um ober and
Starting point is 00:23:20 and Michigan are two one and no teams. They play each other. So you're going to have a couple picked off there. Baylor is getting killed by St. John's right now. They're still like 10 minutes left, so maybe they could come from behind, but it looks like they're going to get picked off there. Maryland is one and O.
Starting point is 00:23:32 They're playing Gonzaga, another one and O. So another one will get picked off there. So realistically, that would mean what? We're sitting at like five, two and O teams, most likely, four, five or six. I don't know. I've already lost count. But point being, only the top four make it into the extra money winnings game.
Starting point is 00:23:50 to speak first we'll play second third will play fourth but if we know that kansas is already ahead of iowa state that means we know for a fact kansas will either be in the the first place or the third place game right because again if we're saying hey there's uh seven match uh seven other one and o teams that could potentially get to two and oh and three of them feature matchups between each other and then i guess if we're assuming baler's going to lose if baler comes from behind then it's not a guarantee. But if not, then that means Kansas would be in either the first or second place game. So it would just depend on some point differentials there. No, do keep in mind, Michigan and Tennessee are plus 20s right now. So if they just win their game even by
Starting point is 00:24:28 one, they'd be at least tied with Kansas in either games against Houston or Auburn, both tough games for both those teams. But if Auburn or Gonzago, when they're, I don't know, it's going to get very interesting. It's all silly and stupid and stuff. But point being, Kansas is probably going to be playing in a big game. And that'll be, you know, kind of interesting. Like, you played well in a big game against Duke. You didn't come through with a win. What if you do come through with a big win in this game? Like, this almost feels like the cherry on top.
Starting point is 00:24:55 I kind of like the fact that Kansas is going to be playing a tough opponent here in this last game because it gives them an opportunity to be like, hey, worst case, you come out of this thing, two and one without Darren Peterson with a loss to a good team. Best case, you beat a good team without Darren Peterson. And then the vibes are really high in Lawrence for when potentially Peterson comes back and headed into that big one next week against Yukon. All right, that'll do it for this episode of Lockdown, Jayhawks.
