Just a ho-hum, taking care of business-type win for the Kansas Jayhawks dominating Wagner in their FCS matchup to move to 2-0.
But we got to learn a little bit more about some of the fun play calling, the QB2 battle, the young running backs battled on.
There were certainly some fun takeaways we'll get into on today's recap from Kansas Wagner.
You are locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks.

underscore Jayhawks.
And on today's edition of Locked-on Jayhawks, we're recapping Kansas's controlling victory over Wagner.
You know, it wasn't a fireworks, FCS win, right?
but you did everything you needed to.
You were super efficient in the game
that the score probably could have been worse
than the final score actually ends up being.
We'll get to our plays of the game,
moments of the game, awards of the game,
stat of the game, game balls,
all that coming up on today's episode of the show,
which is brought to you by GameTime.

You can use that for the next home game,
which is against Missouri,
or maybe you're making the travel
out to the Missouri game next week.
Okay. So let's just start here. Just kind of a very, like you said, it's a game that it felt like, I mean, shoot, some of the final stats actually indicate that, yeah, Kansas maybe should have won this game by, you know, 60 points or something ridiculous like that. But just felt like a ho-hum win. Never really end out. Never really a scare. I mean, you dominated them from the word go. You're up was it 14-0 at the end of the quarter. You're up 29, seven and half time. And it takes, you know, them getting kind of that late touchdown just to.
to get to that point.
So, and it took an interception in the end zone to kind of keep it there, too, like,
Kansas Easley again, could have won this by even more, but just kind of a whole home win.
And this is what you expect.
This is what you want from a competent football program.
The most competent football programs in the country, they don't sweat these FCS games.
Like, sure, if you're playing one of the North Dakota, one of the Dakota schools, you're going
to sweat that, right?
That's a different animal.
But for the most part, you don't want to have to sweat these FCS games.
And a lot of these other schools and teams don't sweat these.
FCS games. And this is what a real program is like. And Kansas has gotten to that point,
like the last couple of years, they're just blowing out their FCS opponents. Like that is what
Lance Leipold has done to this program that we've gotten to a point where you're no longer scared
of this game. You're not getting like juiced up going to the game. You're like, okay,
I just want to see how home win, which is exactly what they did and see some other things and see
some of the young players play, which is kind of what we got to do. So you did what you need to do.
Win big. Dominate the game. Don't show too much on film. You didn't want to overshow your cards on
film um of of too much razzle dazzle that you know Missouri in the future teams you're playing can
scout it on film from a game where you didn't need to use all your razzle dazzle at the same
point in time you wanted to at least show me a little something right yeah you wanted to yeah you
wanted to at least dangle the carrot a little bit of okay well we do this possibility to do this
thing or like you got to worry about this formation we run or this motion we run or this
route tree combination that we run and it's going to keep you up at night this week
preparing for it. And in the meantime, we have a counterplay that when you're preparing for that,
we're going to run a play that actually takes advantage of what we think you're going to do to take
a bit. So, like, it's just one of those things where it's that kind of balancing act. And it felt like
there were a few of those plays from Kansas where I was like, oh, that was fun. That was a little
razzled, dazzle, but there wasn't much. And it was just kind of the perfect amount. It was the
Goldilocks, the just right amount of kind of how that all went together. And then the other thing was,
you know, just try to stay relatively healthy through it. Like, obviously,
it's football there's going to be injuries guys are going to be banged up um seems like kU was able
to stay relatively healthy through the game uh right especially when you think of like the starters
and stuff so that's good news for kU headed into the uh missouri game and obviously there were
some guys who you know like vengali kamara doesn't play in the games you would say oh but that's a bad
and well it seems like to me like abundance of caution coming into the game where it's like
if kU was playing missouri this week i don't know i again i don't know for sure but like i get the
feeling that he would have played if they were playing Missouri this week. But it's like if you're
questionable, if you're borderline, no need to risk it, no need to, you know, doing a game like
this. And in fact, you get, you know, some more reps for some other guys, which it looked like
it was going to be a lot of reps for John John Kamara, something we talked about in pregame that
we really wanted to see. He looked good early and then he gets tossed for the targeting call.
Good news about that being in the first half, by the way. He will be back for the Missouri game at
the start of the first half. If it would have happened in the second half, he would have had to miss the
first half of the Missouri game. So good news there at the very least that it was the beginning,
even though it limited some of the reps that he was able to get to. One of my biggest
takeaways from the game, though, is that like, and again, maybe this is overselling it because
it's an FCS game and we're two games through the season. But KU legitimately might have two
future head coaches as their coordinators right now. There was actually a recent article that came out
this week from the athletic that mentioned Jim Zabrowski. I think they had like six assistant
coaches of Power 5 school, Power 4 schools that could be eventual head coaches in college football.
And Jim Zabrowski was listed as one of those guys.
And so I don't know.
Like that's at least interesting to me because that comes from a place of, I forget
if it was Bruce Feldman or who wrote it, but like clearly that it's catching national
waves to a certain standpoint.
And it makes sense from a standpoint of like what Jim Zabrowski, I think, has accomplished.
Like, I totally get that.
So that makes sense.
And then you watch D.K. McDonald, and it's like, you see some of the creativity.
You see some visibility.
He's obviously got a very good background in terms of where he's been, what schools he's coached at,
like what he has done.
And from the performance, it's looked like so far, I've been very impressed with what
he's done.
And he's a younger guy.
Like, could D.K. McDonald, if he turns Kansas into being a good defense, you know, this
year for two years or whatever, like could he eventually ship off for head coaching job?
yeah absolutely um and just like again you didn't want to put too much on film so there wasn't like
a litany of it but like you see some of the the early blitzes earlier on in the game where
kansas is running blitzes where they have no downline everybody standing up they've got linebackers
they've got defensive ends they've got defense tackles standing up you don't know where the blitz
is going to come from and again you're not using a ton of those in this game just enough to make
them worry about it on film um but like just stuff like that like changing coverages last second
it like just very impressive what he's doing then when jim zabrowski you see the fake screen that turns into
the wide open can pick a touchdown over the middle of the field uh you also have the another one of those
fake speed option plays that we saw kansas do i think once or twice against fresno and that leads to a
big you know passing game to to bowen growing so like it's just like those plays are just examples of
it but like both of them are very creative and are willing to you know kind of risk it with that
creativity in game but are also very sharp and have reasonings for doing it it's just not
it's not throwing something at the wall and hoping it works.
That's crazy.
It's something crazy that is creative and is sharp in how it's executed.
And that's really impressive, I think, for both those guys.
I think one of the biggest reasons that people wanted to watch this game and probably
a lot of the reason people stayed watching the game to the very end was that QB2 battle.
Now, how much, I keep saying QB2 battle.
How much does Lance Leipold view it as a battle?
I don't know.
That might not be.
right? From his perspective, maybe it's Cole Ballard's to win because it's not an
ore. It's Cole Ballard's on the depth chart. Then Isaiah Marshall, but is it close enough
that, you know, game performance like this could have the coaching staff reevaluate,
could have them switch those guys at some point in time? And at the very least, does it,
does it close the gap a little to where, you know, when we do get to spring ball in 2026,
you know, instead of it being, hey, we view this guy deserves the most of the first team
reps. It's, hey, we're going to split them this way, you know.
that's kind of the question here.
And so you end up with a situation where Cole Ballard was a little shaky to start the game.
He starts the game one for five.
Now, one of those incompletions was because I think it was Harry Stewart messed up a pass block on a blitzing linebacker.
And so it forced an incompletion.
There was one that almost got caught by Bryson Canty, which would have been a great catch.
It was a little overthrown by him.
But he ends up completing his last pass, which was a big gain.
So he finishes two for six for 38 yards.
but he leaves the door open a little bit.
Now, I do think Cole Ballard, very underrated rusher of the football.
Like, he's just kind of a tough runner, and he's got more speed than you might think.
I mean, shoot, what did he finish with?
Five carries for 42 yards in the game.
But I don't know, man, it's just like you see Isaiah Marshall.
And again, I continue to believe the reason Cole Ballard is ahead of Isaiah
Marshall on the depth chart, the staff values consistency.
So it is going to be that day in, day out of practice.
And Cole Ballard's floor and his consistency is probably,
better than Isaiah Marshall, but you could also see the ceiling. You could see the potential.
You could see the escapeability, the mobility, all those things, all those words you want to use
for Isaiah Marshall in this game. I mean, there were a couple runs. It was like, I don't remember
if it was back-to-back plays. There was like play, then a different play than that play. But there
were like two plays where KU was in the plus side of the field against Wagner. It was the touchdown
drive that Harry Stewart eventually got the touchdown. And Isaiah Marshall makes these plays
where it looks like, okay, that's going to go for zero yards or you're going to get, like, sacked,
and he turns him into three or four yard gains on these ridiculous escapeability plays.
And it's just those.
He finishes three for three.
It looks good throwing the ball, 28 yards.
I mean, if you're just evaluating off this one game, I think Isaiah Marshall outplayed Cole Ballard.
Now, that said again, the staff values continuity and consistency, and we don't get to be there
for all the practices.
And so, you know, Cole Ballard probably is more consistent than him.
But does this make you reconsider that, hey, I've said this many times.
Some guys are gamers.
Some guys are better in games than they are in practices.
And it makes you wonder if that's going to be the case with Isaiah Ballard,
or Isaiah Marshall, because I thought he was really impressive in this game.
Some other quick hits to get to here.
I am kind of turning into more of a Harry Stewart than a Johnny Thompson guy.
You know, still like both players, but I think that's my preference right now.
LaShawn Williams warmed up, didn't play, but that's a good sign.
He at least warmed up for maybe the Missouri game.
Again, no Bengali Kamara, but I kind of believe if it is,
the Missouri game like he does play this week led to John John starting that was cool until the
targeting led to some other reps for some other guys like Logan Brantley so I guess that's kind of a
good thing how about the delay of games that the fans helped force in the game I mean the new booth
becoming an absolute presence for KU so that was cool to see and then I don't know what was up
with the backup punter I'm sure we'll hear from Lance Leipold after the game with no fin Lappin in this
game and honestly you ended up having a good punting game with Graydon Addison I mean 43 yards
per point. You'd like even more than that. Lapid probably would have averaged a little more than that,
but not bad to say the least. And any other one, 49-yarder as well. All right, let's get to our
game moments of the game, plays of the game, stat of the game, all that next. This is locked on
Jayhawks. Today's episode of LOJ is brought to you by game time. College football is back. And I
couldn't be more excited. I mean, the tailgates, the rivalries, the energy in the stance,
there's just nothing like it. But let's be real. Actually getting tickets can feel more like a battle
than the game itself sometimes.
And list queues, hidden fees, price jumping at tech out.
That's why I use GameTime, the app that gives you the advantage
and kind of makes it the easiest way to score last minute tickets at the best prices
with no surprise fees.
So what you see is what you pay.
You can get Kansas tickets for that Utah game at the end of the year, $27 and up.
You can get Kansas tickets for the West Virginia game.
That's the next home game for $40 over on game time.
If you are interested in going to the KU football game at Missouri,
making that trick out there.
I'm looking right now, $206 in the upper section 314, row 15.
So if you've got a couple hundred to spend, it might be a fun game.
I guess we'll see how the game goes.
So take the guesswork out of buying college football tickets with GameTime.

Okay, moments and plays of the game.
I mean, some of those play calls that we talked about earlier would certainly, you know,
classify for that, the picket wide open touchdown and the scheme up there.
Like, that was really cool to see.
I think Deshaun Hanukkah getting the first touchdown of the game, like just in general,
that was Deshaun Hanukkah's first touchdown in a game since November 26th of 2022.
So that kind of a cool moment in the game.
I think maybe the play of the game in terms of the most impactful was probably the deep ball from Jalen Daniels to Emmanuel Henderson in the second half, the 64-yard touchdown pass to Henderson.
Because as much as you were dominating the game and did, it was 29 to 7 at halftime to where it's like, if you get stopped and Wagner goes down and scores, this is kind of a game, right?
but instead you just come out and you hit the deep ball shot to
Amanda Henderson and boom you're up 36-7 and it's just like okay yeah we're
going to be fine here we're in control of this one and that was obviously
great to see you with Henderson's speed and JD throwing downfield and everything
my pick though for moment to play the game I think this is probably a moment
because it extends past the play it's the Daniel high shot 20 yard rushing touchdown
so this was just a great all-around team play if you go back and wash it
it's a couple like really good blocks there was at least one double team on the interior of
the offensive line um high shot gets through that first level at the kind of second level
calvin clements has driven his man back and pancakes him into the earth big time pancake block
by calvin clements there you have i think it was keaton queca i could be wrong on that was the receiver
who was blocking downfield so you just get like the team effort and then on top of it daniel highshaw
with a really good cut on the run and has kind of a stiff arm at the end of the plate get in for the end
zone and then it's the afterplay festivities too right just kind of that like tearworthy moment the
chef's kiss moment where he gets the dab up devon neal after the touchdown just that whole sequence i
think that was my favorite part uh of the game uh stat of the game i i think there's a lot we can choose
from i mean i'm looking some of these numbers again this is what i said earlier the final
score is 46 to 7 and you could have easily like if you look at the stats cancans should have won by
more if i told you coming in kansas was going to out yard wagner 6.30
one to 143, you would think they've won by 60 or 70 points.
The only reason it was closer than that was Kansas ended up with two turnovers in the end.
Both of them were in the end zone.
You had the fumble by Johnny Thompson, which honestly, I'm not even quite sure he didn't get
over the line before the fumble, but the score's out of place.
And so whatever, I guess it mattered for people with the spread because the spread was 40,
if you got 45 and a half, that was the difference.
So I'm sorry to you if that's what happened.
you know that was one and then jalen throws the the interception in the end zone you get you know two
touchdowns there at 60 to seven and that is how you get to that point but i don't know what's more
impressive having 631 yards of offense or holding them to 143 both of them are very impressive put together
or the fact that um you know you outrushed them 285 to 53 right that all goes into that uh the fact
that i mean the first downs is insane 32 first downs for kansas just six for wagner again both of those
are pretty bonkers, pretty nuts.
Kansas averaged 8.1 yards per play.
Wagner, at three.
You almost tripled them up in yards per play.
That's ridiculous.
This one's fun.
Kansas was in the red zone eight times.
Wagner had six first downs.
So that's a fun stat for the game.
And then the other one that you could point to.
Kansas had nine tackles for loss and three sacks as a defense.
Wagner had zero of both.
Do you know what that means?
That means that the KU Offens Line played on awesome.
game. They didn't give up any penetration. They didn't get any chaotic or negative plays off of
you. So, yeah, I don't know, pick one for your favorite stat of the game because there's plenty
to go to. We got three awards we're giving out for this game. The first is the rip his bleeping
head off award. And that's going to go. I mean, honestly, a lot of candidates here. There were
some big hits from a lot of different players. I mean, John Kamara before he goes out there.
Devin Die had a big hit there. I think Lyric Rawls had a big hit. Honestly, a lot of DBs now that
I'm mentioning it. But Taylor Davis, Taylor Davis wins the rip his bleeping headoff award.
There were two or three hits by Davis in this game where it was like hard hits.
Like you would have felt his presence if you were a member of the Seahawks in this one.
And let's see, in the end, Davis finished with two tackles. So it must have just been those two.
But it was early in the game. It was notable and he was going after him.
I will give an honorable mention on the Rip His Bleeping Head Off Award to the ref who was
trying to do that on the Daniel Hyshaw run in the second quarter as well.
But yeah, I don't know.
I just want to take this into a quick thought real quick.
If Kansas is going to play more defensive backs on the field, which it seems like they are,
they're doing a little bit more of that with D.K. McDonald.
And I like that, right?
That's what a lot of some of these new age defenses have done and they've been successful.
You think of Iowa State.
It does put more of an onus on those defensive backs to be able to tackle, to hit,
to creep up and run support and make plays and be willing to, you know, make that contact.
And I think you see, I just mentioned all those DBs who were like hard-hitting.
Like, I don't think Kansas is going to have a problem with that.
Okay, the Possum Award.
This is a word, you know, possums play dead.
That might be a little extreme.
Jalen Daniels gets this award.
And here's why.
By the way, excellent game for Jayland Daniels again and the efficiency off the charts
in these first two games.
Even the interception he had was, I mean, it was just a great play by the DB.
The DB went off of his man and made like a one-handed interception.
But the reason I'm giving him the Possum award,
this happened in week one um he walked off the field at one point or in week zero he walked off the field
in one point in week zero against fresno state like not moving his like left arm he's just moving his
like right arm keeping the left straight as if it was like injured and he couldn't move it like he
dislocated his shoulder or something and then eventually he was fine it was just like I don't know
he was just running like that it happened again in this game there was one point I forget if it was
after the it might have been after like the second drive he like runs off the field and keeps his left
arm straight as his right arm's moving and you're sitting there going oh no did he injure his shoulder or
something like that he's totally fine which is great you hope he stays fine and everything he had an
awesome game um but you're scaring us man you can't deal with those emotions okay and then a five-hour
energy award that goes to tate naggy that dude has just unlimited energy on par return and kick
return he's zigzagging over the field i'm pretty sure he's picking up two yard gains or he's
running 60 yards to get the two yards he's picking up 30 yard gains or he's running probably 80 yards
to get the 30, I don't know, unlimited energy, he's making things happen.
It's kind of fun to watch.
It is the energizer, the five-hour energizer for Tate and Aggie Award for this game.
All right, let's go about some game balls, offense, defense, special teams next.

ball. But anyway, let's give out our game balls. All right, offensive side of the ball.
I mean, I got to give to one to Jalen. Like I said, the interception was, I thought it was
understandable and I kind of saw what he was going for. And it was just a great play the other way.
But overall, Jalen, 18 of 25, 280, four touchdowns to one interception. So track it up.
He has what, the B nine incompletions this year to seven passing touchdowns. Yeah, that'll work
so far this season for him. He didn't have to, you know, make as much happen, scrambling, but
there were a few runs here three carries for 18 yards so he gets a game ball here i'm trying to
limit these the two you can really go a lot of different directions in an fcs game like this i mean
i could go daniel highshaw um i could go by the way that sucked that the uh justin thurman
he had that long run get it didn't get fully whistled back it just lost a lot of yards because
the penalty but anyway i think i have to go ammanuel henderson six catches 130 yards two
touchdowns.
Honestly, I should probably just give this award to the offensive line.
Again, zero TFLs, zero sacks allowed.
You had over 600 yards of offense.
Everyone went off.
So realistically, I would give a game ball to the entire offensive line, but if we're
just having to pick individuals, I'll go Jalen Daniels and Emmanuel Henderson for the
two.
We're giving out to the offense.
A defensive side of the ball for game balls for KU.
Trey Lathan.
So you have the injury, again, to Bengali Kamara.
You have John John Kamara go out early.
who was the one consistent among the starting linebackers,
Trey Lathen has a couple of big hits.
He ends up with four tackles,
which tied for the team lead for KU
because it was just spread out with a billion players.
Also had two and a half TFLs along the four tackles.
So really making, being efficient with those tackles that he was able to provide
in the game for KU.
And then, I mean, I don't know.
Like, they only had 90 yards passing.
They average like four and a half yards per attempt.
So like I'm tempted to just say,
you know and when you look at the receivers like one guy caught a 45-yard pass nobody else had more than 22 yards
I'm tempted to just say like pick a cover corner for kU who did a better job but how much of that was
k u how much of that was wagner i'll be interested to you know kind of rewatch the game after and
see what some of the the pro football focus grades and stuff say about that but um you know we'll just go
devon die for now he did have a pass breakup four tackles he had a big hit himself so i'll give it to
Trey Lathen and Devon die for the time being over there.
But, I mean, you could, I already feel silly doing this.
DJ Withers had two sacks.
I mean, let's do DJ Withers.
DJ Withers, Trey Lathen, those are the two game balls for the defensive side of the
ball.
Special teams, only going to give one out because there's just less players to go with here
for special teams.
Do I go with the five-hour Energizer in Tate Nagy?
Do I go with, I mean, Lath Marginon, a 27-yard field goal like, you should make those?
you know, let's go with Graydon Addison.
You're filling in for the starting punter.
Again, I don't know what happened there, but you had a 49-yard punt,
three punts, 43-yard average.
It was a fine game for you, but, you know, probably getting the call late,
like, good for you and got the start here and cool moment for him probably in his family.
So I'll give the special teams game ball to Graydon Addison there.
