Starting point is 00:00:00 Melvin Council had his best Elijah Johnson impression going, what a performance. Darren Peterson also hurt. What a game it was. A lot to break down on today's episode. Starting point is 00:00:34 us today on today's episode we're recapping kansas's win at nc state it was a fun game it was a i don't know exciting and excruciating game to the very finish but k u comes out on top obviously lots of storylines played out in this one with darian williams with melvin council's great performance darren peterson uh maybe being hurt once again so we're going to break that all down on today's episode of the show and this episode is brought to you by fan dual sports book with Fandul, if you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, you can just visit Fandul.com and place your live NFL bats all season long. So KU wins by a point in overtime at NC State here.
Starting point is 00:01:14 And this is a good win for KU. And before we get into, obviously, there's some negatives with what happened in the game and, you know, with Peterson's status and stuff like that. But let's celebrate the win. And we will here with counsel's performance, especially because even though it did feel like in a certain extent, you won the battle by winning the game. You lost the war by Peterson, you know, limping off the court. This is KU's first road win against a Ken Palm top 40 opponent at the time of play since February of 2023. They did not accomplish that the last
Starting point is 00:01:48 two seasons. And so that is the importance of winning this game, to be clear. You showed you could win on the road against a quality opponent. Kansas came in. to this one and six as a program in the last seven road games with the lone win being a bad Colorado team on the road. So this was important. It was important to show you could win on the road. Again, you do it partially without Darren Peterson to show that you are more than just Peterson. And it's a quad one win. It's a booster for your resume. So those are all great for KU here. And I think the biggest positives if we're going to start there, which we should, they won the game. A is that they won the game. Again, that boosting your resume, getting a quad one win,
Starting point is 00:02:28 showing you can win on the road, I don't know, kind of kick-starting what you would hope is a bit of a run here, right? By beating Missou, winning this one, you have two very winnable games in front of you. You've got to take care of business and then the start of Big 12th play, looking to kind of build on some momentum to the start of conference play here. But it's Melvin Council's outburst. Like, that is the biggest positive of this game. And am I expecting Melvin Council to have another 36 or even 30-point game this season? No, I'm not. But it's the idea that, especially if Peterson, you know, is going to miss a lot.
Starting point is 00:02:58 a lot of time here. Can counsel have a game here or there if Peterson's out where he goes gets hot, right? And obviously I do think that a lot of counsel in the early going, like at the end of the game, counsel was still kind of doing it for himself. At the beginning of the game, a lot of it was set up by Peterson being out on the floor and him getting doubled and hard hedged. And part of it was Will Wade and NC State kind of taking a calculated gambling risk of we're going basically leave you open and hard hedge elsewhere and put extra attention in the paint to prevent your big men from getting shots down there. And it obviously didn't pay off for NC State. But it's just, you look at Melvin Council as kind of the soul of this team. If you're not a dog,
Starting point is 00:03:42 your dog food, the endearment that he has brought to the fan base and seemingly to Bill Self, having this moment, I think, is just really cool. But it kind of solidifies. his role as the leader on the team by showing like he can step up in this biggest moment and had to do this if he didn't like huge help Darren Peterson gave him a lot of help when he was in there but Peterson obviously you know didn't play the last whatever minutes of the game Troy White had 12 so that was fine but once you remove White counsel and Peterson that accounted for 65 year 77 points you only got 12 points the rest of the way. You literally had to have this performance each and every point from Melvin
Starting point is 00:04:28 counsel or you do not grab what ends up being a really big road win for KU and keeps them from a fourth loss already when you know there will be plenty of other times that are going to have loseable games upcoming in Big 12 play, right? I would also say this. Like one positive here with the Darren Peterson performance. I mean, the injury is obviously what is kind of the news here. He was really good, 17 points, five rebounds, four assists. And the thing I was most impressed with was in that first half, there's a bit of a slower start for Peterson, NC States running this really difficult defense for him to deal with individually. And he and the coaching staff started to figure it out. And the second half, they figured out how to attack it. And he was going off before, you know,
Starting point is 00:05:16 he goes out for the rest of the game. So that is a positive that if other teams try to take a page out of NC State's playbook, which I don't know if they will after seeing what counsel just did against that playbook. But if you get Peterson back and they decide, hey, we're going to play it like this, KU can be like, okay, we started to figure it out before you went down. Now, as far as some of the biggest negatives of this game, the Peterson Hammy, that is the biggest negative here for KU, right? So Henry Greenstein, I believe, was out there for Lawrence Journal World, KU Sports.
Starting point is 00:05:46 And he tweeted this out. He said, self-said he thought Peterson was, quote, getting tight. end quote in his hamstring and then here's a full quote here he said he needed to come out he's experienced this every game that we played i was happy that he got that far that deep into the game now the full quote itself is actually relatively encouraging now it's kind of the eye of the beholder right if you focus on the first part of the quote um he's he said he needed to come out he's experienced this every game that we played that part does not that part's not rosy right that he experienced this every game that we played
Starting point is 00:06:25 because that's not the full tale that we've gotten from Bill Self every time that if he's experiencing that every game, like how bad truly is this hamstring, right? And that's a little bit scary there. And then the other side of it, though, is, you know, I was happy that he got that far that deep into the game.
Starting point is 00:06:43 Kind of makes it seem like it's, I don't know, like, and again, going back to it was getting tight. There's a difference in getting tight and feeling like it was pulled or popped or something. So I guess there's like some positives you can come away from this, some negatives you can come away from this. But the point is this, you didn't have him down the stretch in a tight, close game that you would have needed him.
Starting point is 00:07:05 And obviously, that's not up to Peterson. It's not his fault that his hamstring has been this way. But I think the good news for KU and all this is you don't have a lot of game action left between now and the start of Big 12 play. I mean, January 3rd is the start of big 12 play. So that gives you what, like basically three weeks, like three weeks to the start of big 12 play for KU. That's a lot of time for Peterson to get rest and recovery and to get right for the start
Starting point is 00:07:33 of big 12th play. But even then, like, are we at a point now where you just say, hey, even sit him into some of the big 12th play, right? Like I guess it's a challenging thing because we just saw him sit for a long period of time, right? I mean, he sat, so the second game was North Carolina of November 7th and then began until Missouri, December 7th. So he sat a month for that one and clearly it wasn't long enough. So if you're looking at it as, okay, do you need him to, instead of four weeks, do you need him to sit for six weeks?
Starting point is 00:08:05 And then you're looking at, okay, three weeks to the start of big 12 play versus UCF, UCF, TCU, West Virginia, Iowa State, Baylor, that's two more weeks if you're giving him five weeks. And then if you're giving him six weeks, you're missing Colorado, Kansas State. could you have him back for the Saturday, January 31st against BYU? Because that's a week after you play a game. You don't have a midweek game that week. And that would give you at this point, you know, a month and a half, almost two months between games. So I think the short end target date is if you can get him back by Big 12 play, great. Definitely don't play them in the Towson and Davidson games, I guess.
Starting point is 00:08:39 But maybe if you can at least get them back there. I think the big worry with all this is, and this is something I brought up when this all started happening, was the question, I think, becomes from his side of things, from his camp, from his party, whether it's an agent, a parent, or combination, or whoever, were you willing to say, hey, we want to, we want to be very cautious with this, and we'll be back when we're ready to be back. But if it happens again, we're done, we're out. We're shutting it down so we can be a top three, if not the number one pick in the NBA draft. I don't know. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:09:12 That's more of a conversation for them, right? and that is one that I was very worried about if he got hurt again would certainly be one that comes up and I know I don't know I guess that's just something that I'm very worried about now so we'll wait and see on that the other biggest negatives from this one it just feels like you didn't really get much help there from enough guys overall it was a good thing council went off the way he did you just didn't get enough other performances and one of those it just feels like too often we're at least I'm having this feeling coming out of game that like an overall it's on 11 rebound game and eight points and four of seven like the sat line looks fine but i'm having too many games coming away so far this season where i'm like yeah florrie kind of got beat up by the other big man and it is one of those things where it's inconsistent like against duke he was great in the first two games of the players era he was great but you think of the yukon game playing against a freshman big man in ribe riba um you think about the north carolina game against Vassar. You think about this game against Van Allen Lubin, who's not like, you know, somebody that is going to be an All-American or something. And it's just inconsistent. There are too many times right now where especially if Peterson's going to be out, you need Flory to consistently be one of the best players on the floor between both teams and that you're getting beaten by the other center. So I think long term here, the cloud of Peterson's injury and some of the other performances for KU hamper's a little bit.
Starting point is 00:10:41 bit of the long term of this game for Kansas. But, you know, again, don't not celebrate winning a road game against a tough opponent when you haven't been doing that recent years. And you did it in a hostile environment. You did it against a solid opponent who like they were hitting clutch shots in this game. It felt like every time you would push up to a five point lead or a three point lead, they would just counterback by hitting a big three or something. Obviously, they did down the stretch. You still didn't have Darren Peterson down the stretch. And I think it kind of further showed that you do have a high floor on this team even without Darren Peterson. Obviously, Peterson is what's needed, I think, to take you from being a good team to if you want
Starting point is 00:11:18 to beat some of the elite teams like the Yukons of the world. We remember and go back to that game. But overall, Kansas wins a really close one on the road in a back and forth game that Melvin Council was awesome. Let's get through some more game award stats of the game. I feel like Melvin Council is going to come up again there. We'll get to what's next as well. This is Locked on Jayhawks.

Starting point is 00:14:13 game. I think in the early going, it's kind of back and forth, NC State's leading for a good chunk of it in the early portion, but never by really more than like three, it felt like. But then you get a sequence where it was really good. You get a Trey White stop on Williams. There's a one-on-one post-up, and that was kind of a big storyline coming into the game. So you get a stop there. Then you go down and Peterson gives it to counsel in the corner. Counsel hits the three. That was the fourth three at the time for counsel in route to nine. And then Peterson hits that tough mid-range shot where he's kind of getting, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:45 bumped from the side and pushing off of it. Then your defense forces a shot clock violation. And all that was to put you up, go up 25, 23. That obviously eventually was part of and led to a 70 run for Kansas with some other nice plays. You had a great Trey White drive that led to a badunga dunk. but unfortunately that 7-0 run that turned to a 30 to 23 lead ended up seeing the the game tied at halftime. But I think other great moments, I mean, this one was, I think,
Starting point is 00:15:17 counsel's fifth three of the game. It was in the second half. Peterson's like weaving through traffic. He gets hard hedged and he gets put in a spot where most guys would have just turned it over when he, like the other guy figured out exactly where he was going to go and went right where he was going to go. and he somehow split two to sideways dribble and then passes to counsel for his, again, I thought it was his fifth three of the game.
Starting point is 00:15:38 That was a cool moment. I think in general you could just pick like one of your Melvin counsel shots down the stretch, whether it was that hard drive he had, whether it was one of the threes, whether it was the three to start overtime after Williams had the chance in an hand one, missed the free throw and just kind of grabbed back some momentum for you. He was just so good. I think you would have to pick. But another one that we could probably bring up here is getting two stops at the end, right?
Starting point is 00:15:59 You needed two stops because you ended. ended up, you know, or was it even three stops at the end, right? Did you, I don't know, whatever it was, two or three stops at the end. And between one of the timeouts, I remember, like, they were, you know, Bill Self was like, you know, trying to motivate and like go get a stop and stuff and he hits El Marco Jackson on the chest. And El Marco just smiles, like, the identity of this team needs to be a good defensive team. And they stepped up in the moment at the end.
Starting point is 00:16:26 NC State hit clutch shots in this one to, you know, continue to come at you. but you got those stops at the end, you get the stop at the very end to kind of come up with it. But yeah, I don't know, pick your Melvin counsel shot of the game. I think that's probably the play of the game or the moment of the game for KU. Are there stat of the game in this one? So you held NC State to 38%. That certainly sticks out, 26% from three, which they missed some open ones, probably a little fortunate there with some of that at the same point in time.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I don't know. I thought Kansas had a good amount of them. contested right you're never going to have a fully uncontested or contested uh range of threes but that was important um the uh fast break points being 11 to 7 in favor of kansas was big and more so the seven more so the seven because we we talked about coming into this nc state had struggled a bit defending in transition and a lot of times in the game you would see bill self on the sideline like hurry out like you're trying to get them to play faster um but holding them to seven and this is nc state is and typically with will wade they're one of the better transition teams in
Starting point is 00:17:35 the country and k u was able outscore him by four in transition i think that ends up being a big win for k u overall um so let's just go with that one because i think you i mean in a game you win by one to take away one of their what typically is the strength for them and turn it into something that was a slight positive for you ends up being kind of a big swing in the game. The only other one we could probably point to is the fact that Melvin Council was, honestly, this is probably the stat of the game. Melvin Council was 9 of 15 from 3. The rest of Kansas was 2 of 15. And two of those, both of those were Darren Peterson. So Peterson and Council went 11 of 20 from 3. The rest of the team went 0 of 10. Need a little more help moving forward,
Starting point is 00:18:23 but it was good that counsel did what he did. On our awards of the game, of course it had to be award goes to Dary and Williams. Williams was having a bit of a quiet game until the end and then he had an outburst at the end. He hits the game like he had played so well against KU in his past two matchups when he was with Texas Tech and hit some big shots in both of them. Then you look at the transfer saga that happened this offseason. Of course it was going to be Dary and Williams hitting the three to tie at 66 all. Of course it was going to be Dary and Williams going off. scoring like all their points in overtime. Fortunately, KU was still able to survive it, nonetheless,
Starting point is 00:19:03 but you definitely got a bit of a notion there at the, man, I wish they would have been able to get Dary and Williams out of the transfer portal. The Unstoppable Award, if Darren Peterson could ever get fully good hamstrings and the tray white whistle. Obviously, the hamstrings, we talked a lot about that. I don't know what it was. And this specific, I think Bill Self in the post game said he thought they got a tough whistle. And obviously, I'm sure NC State fans at the end, you get the should that have been the elbow
Starting point is 00:19:27 on Melvin Council. For my money, I thought it was just, okay, you're just trying to run by him and whatever. It's part of your normal motion, but like, whatever. At the same point in time, if you're upset at that one, they hammered Florey at the end, him on the offensive rebound putback attempts, and he didn't get the call there. So like, I don't know, it probably equals out. Plus, at the end of the day, like, this was a game, in my opinion, with the whistle, that if they were going to let them play, which they clearly did, like, there were not, there were not a ton of fouls in this game. Let's see how many fouls? NC State had 14 fouls for the game, which is obviously not very much when you consider this was also an overtime game, right? And you consider that
Starting point is 00:20:08 what, they foul twice at the end to put Kansas in one-in-ones. So really it's 12 fouls through like 45 minutes of real fouls for NC State. And Kansas only had 12 of them as well. But the point being here isn't the foul despair. The point being that I'm trying to get to here is that they let them play. There weren't a lot of total fouls called, which meant it was going to be physical play that was allowed. And if that's what you were going to do inherently, there's going to be an advantage to NC State there. Because think about it, NC State shoots a lot of threes. And I know Kansas shot a lot of threes and made a lot of threes in this game. But NC State shoots a lot of three's right and that is just kind of part of their DNA and what they do and they shot 34 of them
Starting point is 00:20:53 tonight again Kansas shot 30 but for Kansas typically their way of getting success is scoring on the inside and you know finding ways to get easy buckets they're not typically the biggest highest volume three point shooting team and so if you're taking away Kansas's ability at the rim by it being harder nose down there that's going to be advantage for an NC state team that is typically more comfortable playing on the outside obviously Kansas ended up being more comfortable there in this game when you just look at the percentage. Anyway, whatever the opposite of the Billshoff dog house is, I guess the Billshoff Pent House, that goes to Melvin Council.
Starting point is 00:21:28 He loves Melvin Council. Melvin Council is a dog. Melvin Council wins him in this game. Is Melvin Council going to get one of our game balls? Probably. Let's discuss that next and what's next. This episode of the show is brought to you by ORA Frames. The holidays are officially here, which means gift hunting season.

Thanks, Jim, for joining us here on Locked on Jayhawks, Derek Johnson here. And back on Monday, we're going to talk more about the Darren Peterson injury stuff. We're also going to talk about, you know, should Kayu have gone harder after Darian Williams on Monday's show.
Starting point is 00:22:58 So stick around for that coming up on Monday. Our game balls from this one for KU winning by a point. Let's start with the offensive game ball. Who could it be for Kansas, right? No need to waste your time here. It is Melvin Council. Melvin Council gets the offensive game ball for Kansas, 36 points, 13. of 27, nine of 15 from three.
Starting point is 00:23:17 He also had four assists compared to zero turnovers. I mentioned coming into the game. Counsel was, I forget the exact number is like 95th percentile. Is this the turnover ratio? So he was already doing good than that. That got even better. And that's in an overtime game. So that was great.
Starting point is 00:23:34 That helps the offensive. He'll set an offensive rebound. That doesn't hurt either. Yeah, he is the offensive game ball for this one. Who gets the defensive game ball for KU? So this was not a good game overall for Bryson Tiller, two points on one of five, just four rebounds in 29 minutes. But I think he does deserve at least a little bit of credit on the defensive end because,
Starting point is 00:23:56 and we mentioned this coming into the game in the preview, like what's going to be better for Kansas? Is it going to be Trey White on Dary and Williams or is it going to be playing some size, similar to Arkansas did and holding him to an inefficient game in the Sweet 16? And I think Tiller's side, again, Williams finishes with 17 on 7 of 17. but up until the overtime period in the end of regulation, it was not a good game for Dary and Williams. I think Tiller at least deserves a little bit of credit for that.
Starting point is 00:24:21 I'm not going to give him the defensive game ball, but he does deserve a little bit of credit for that. He did have a block as well. Honestly, I think I would give this one, I don't know, it's hard to say because he didn't finish the game. I was trending toward giving it to Darren Peterson. He had some like one or two deflections. That one block he had was awesome.
Starting point is 00:24:41 I thought that I just noticed it. real ways, especially in the second half, but again, I'm not going to give it to him because of the way that things kind of finished here. It's interesting. Do we, I don't know, like, KU switches so much that like there were moments that Copeland for Ency State was able to drive in and kind of get whatever he wanted, but I noticed that more when it wasn't counsel guarding him. I don't know. Trey Holliman only went four of 16 shooting, I guess, is this just a little bit of three point luck defense like maybe there's a little bit there i do think kansas again though is better equipped to guard the three point line than some previous seasons um i don't know it's hard
Starting point is 00:25:24 to say because flory wouldn't be the answer we just will give it to bryson tiller again not a good offensive game for tiller probably want more than four rebounds in 29 minutes but he does deserve credit for battling with darian williams and taking him away for a good portion of it so we'll just go with that and then our overall game ball it's still melvin council i mean council's impact was obviously huge, 36 points when the whole team has 77. He had almost half of the team's points. This felt like Elijah Johnson and Ames against Iowa State all those years ago when Melvin Weatherwax became a very popular name among KU fans. I don't know, popular might not be the right word, but a well-known name, infamous name. So yeah, Melvin Council gets that one. So what's next
Starting point is 00:26:05 now for KU? On Tuesday, they're going to be taken on Towson. Again, probably not a game you play Peterson and then you have a week off and then the following Monday against Davidson. Those are two games. KU should win. Obviously, we have seen KU, you know, play close in some of these games, especially before Christmas break. So you never discount it. We've seen Kansas lose the Davidson in a December non-conference game.
Starting point is 00:26:28 But the good news for KU, just two games in the next 20 days. So some extra time over Christmas break. And here's the beauty of this too. It's not just about getting Darren Peterson right. It's that you have a lot of practice time now over these next three weeks before the start of Big 12 play to really understand what you are as a team. And this is usually the moments where Bill Self can get them to kind of improve the most because they have the most time kind of in the lab, so to speak, to work on what they need
