We'll start with what he brings to the table. The first this episode of the show is brought to you by FanDuel Sportsbook. Right now new customers can get $250 in bonus bets when your first $5 bet wins. Okay, Melvin
Starting point is 00:01:20 Council Jr. is officially a Jayhawk. He was most recently at St. Bonaventure, but this will be his fourth school though he's somebody taking advantage of the junior college extra year that is being allowed to begin his All America first team from the junior college level then he goes to Wagner in 2023 to 2024 and he becomes all northeast conference first team so everywhere he's going he's he's becoming an all league or all American level player helps Wagner go to the NCAA tournament they win a tournament game in the uh the first four with the 16 seeds lose to Carolina in the first round from there. Then this next season, he moves up even further to the Atlantic 10 was a Bonaventure, where he ends up being all Atlantic 10 third team and that was the Adrian Wojnarowski was the GM for I think he put a nice comment in his transfer move on social media as well. And when you look at his numbers at Wagner, he obviously led them to the NCAA tournament about 15 points almost six rebounds three and a half assists
Starting point is 00:02:27 1.4 steals per game good numbers there efficiency not so good though Wagner 39 from the floor 27 from 375 at the foul line But this past year the efficiency numbers went up even if three-point shooting wasn't something that jumps off the page But this is st. Bon of Edgerton the 122 games So you're talking about a guy who you know, no matter where he's going, they're winning games. They were top 80 defense on Ken Palm, according or the St. Bonaventure was, and he averaged 14.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.1 steals per game, did it on 43 and a half 3082 shooting splits. And just a really consistent player he plays with a good intensity about him. You'll see people saying that I think he's even said like, he has this like saying about, you know, if you're a dog, you dog food. And
Starting point is 00:03:18 that's kind of a cool saying that I honestly like they should make nil t shirts about because I bet you he'll become a fan favorite by doing that. But this is a player by having that kind of intensity. He's not one of those guys where it's like, okay, one game is going to give you 12 points and next season is going to give you zero. You know, I mean, I guess anything is possible here in the transfer portal with Kansas,
Starting point is 00:03:37 but like that's not what he has shown. He has shown to be a steady guy who was going to always have that tenacity and intensity. And you have to have some of those players on your team. He had a stretch this year where he had 24, 24 consecutive games scoring double digits. If that's not showing consistency, I don't know what is. His season low was seven points.
Starting point is 00:03:56 His season high was 24 points. He was mostly in between there. He had 13 games with three or more steals. He had a season high of seven steals in a game this season. And he wound up with some good rates as well. 62nd percentile for offensive rebound rate among guards. So go down the offensive glass for guards. 84th percentile for defensive rebound rate among guards.
Starting point is 00:04:16 So very good rebound in guard. 93rd percentile in steal rate. 80th percentile in block rate for guards. He also was in the 87th percentile for assist rate. 76th percentile to block rate for guards. He also is in the 87th percentile for assist rate, a 76th percentile to assist to turnover rate. You know, you've seen Bill Self and many other fans, we brought it up in our deep dive, have mentioned the Tyshaun Taylor comp in a little ways,
Starting point is 00:04:36 which you see a little bit of that. You have a taller guard who the shooting isn't the primary part of their game. They're both good at slashing, getting to the rim. They're both good at getting steals and they're fast and they're good at working in transition. I think Taylor gave you a little bit more from three point range that wasn't on super high volume
Starting point is 00:04:55 until his last year, but it was more efficient than council. But council gives you less turnovers. There were times where Tyshawn racked up the turnovers. Council left the case, 76 percentile and assisted turnover rate. He also, not the case 76 percentile and assisted turnover rate. He also rated in the 98th percentile that counsel for on off net rating at Wagner, he was in the 73rd percentile for odd off net rating. So basically, this guy who is
Starting point is 00:05:16 impacting when he is on the floor, and he wound up with this is just the you know, kind of a throwaway set you can find on called the basketball reference, it ends up being a little bit more of a counting set, but I think it still matters. 4.6 win shares, Hunter Dickinson led Kansas with five win shares this past season, KJ Adams was second on Kansas with 3.6. So again, as you're compiling these stats, you're seeing the value you're seeing the worth that he brings
Starting point is 00:05:40 to his team. If you look at PER, which is kind of a measure of efficiency, he had a 19.2. The top player among KU guards with PER was 16 for Kansas this past season, or Zeke Mayo. Duann Harris was 14.5, De'Kloy was 12. He was a 19.2. So even though you're saying, only 29.9% for three, the efficiency overall was still better than those other players for Kansas had because he avoided turnovers, he was able to get to the rim like you work well in transition. And when you look at the biggest strengths for this kid athleticism, and what that leads to, it leads to rim pressure, it leads to
Starting point is 00:06:16 transition play, it leads to ability to win one on one, it leads to defense, it leads to forcing seals, leads to rebounding for a guard. He's a really good athlete, he has a good size for a guard. And when we're talking about that rim pressure specifically, it's odd, he leads rebounding for a guard. He's a really good athlete and he has good size for a guard. And when we're talking about that rim pressure specifically, it's on. He doesn't get to the free throw line much. Maybe sometimes he settles too much for floaters. Maybe that's part of it.
Starting point is 00:06:33 But he can still score inside. His speed, his athleticism, it allows him to finish without getting fouled sometimes, maybe because he just blows by. So maybe that's part of it too. But he was in the 59th percentile for at the rim two point shooting 61% so above average there among guards. And that number was even better at Wagner 64 and a half percent at the rim that was 75th percentile nationally for guards. So he's been good there
Starting point is 00:06:56 both years. The interesting one is the in the paint numbers here, which is again more of those like floater type shots. So in the paint on CBB analytics is defined as, you know, outside of four and a half feet from the rim, but still inside the paint, right? So the year before he was not good at it at Wagner. You look at the percentages, they weren't good. At St. Bonaventure, they were elite. He shot 49.6% in that zone,
Starting point is 00:07:17 85th percentile nationally in the paint. Now, is it entirely possible that the truth lies somewhere in the middle? Yeah, of course it is. It's also possible that that's a shot he worked on a lot over the offseason, knowing that was a shot that he's going to take a good amount, and he became really good at it. And so that's kind of where I lean, right?
Starting point is 00:07:34 And then he also had 11 dunks. That's where you see the athleticism coming into play there. Good transition player because the athleticism able to speed by defense, has got good length, the finishing side. Ability to win the one on one opportunities has been something that, you know, Kansas needs more of over these past couple of seasons, having guys that can break down a defender one on one.
Starting point is 00:07:53 And the defense is something where, okay, you have a lengthy guard, right? That's gonna allow him to be a good defender. You have the speed, you're getting steals. I mean, over two steals per game, the steal rates, the block rates are great. What's interesting is the odd off defensive numbers. If you look at the odd off defensive numbers,
Starting point is 00:08:14 we're not very good for him this past season. But if you look at the overall just on defensive rating, when he is on the floor, they were good. And so I went back and looked and I was like, okay, because overall I think same about it. It was like nine or 10 points worse defensively when he is on the floor, they were good. And so I went back and looked and I was like, okay, because overall I think same point, it was like nine or 10 points worse defensively when he's on the floor and still the net rating was still overall a resounding positive for him because the offensive end. But I was like, okay, what what gives here because he's known as a good defender.
Starting point is 00:08:37 Like people tell you he's a good defender. The stats say he's a good defender. Why are the on-off numbers? Well, OK, this dude is a minute warrior. He's playing like 40 minutes in a bunch of the games down the stretch. He's playing like 37 minutes per game. And so I went and looked at some of the lineup numbers.
Starting point is 00:08:53 The lineup that was played the most that doesn't include Melvin Council when he was on the bench, only played nine minutes. So it's very easy for a guy that plays that many minutes. Let's say you're up 20 at the end of the game or down 20 at the end of the game, you're going to bring in your walk-ons, right? And what if in that two minute stretch, your walk-ons, you know, just hold the other team scoreless because their walk-ons are in, or the other team just, you know, is sitting on the clock
Starting point is 00:09:22 or whatever, you're sitting on the clock. And so you're holding teams without a bunch of points at the end of the game. And then because you're playing so many minutes, those are really the only real minutes where you're going to the bench. And that is why your on-off D rating doesn't look as good. I think he's a good defender. I think he's going to be a really good defender for this Kansas team. And then you look at the fact that, yeah, he's not going to have to do as much. He's probably not going to have to play 37 minutes, you know,
Starting point is 00:09:45 maybe he ends up playing 28, 30, 32. I don't know. He's not going to have to do as much with the ball in his hand, right? They'll still use him in those ways, but it's not going to be the the number one option necessarily on a team. There's going to be more energy to expend on the defense.
Starting point is 00:09:58 So I think he's going to be a really good defender for KU. The biggest question here, though, has to be the shooting just 18 and a half percent in the mid-range. That is a bit yikes. He, for his career over two years at Juco plus two years of D1, he is 28.7% from three. It is up a little bit, 29.9% last year. Still in the 31st percentile though, so not the best there. I will say when you look at some of the numbers divvied out, he shot 35.9% on corner threes this season. Maybe Kansas will be able to give him those a little bit more by not being the primary option because he only
Starting point is 00:10:33 shot 27.5% on above the break threes. But here's the kicker for me. Melvin Council only went one of 14 on three pointers of 25 or more feet according to CBB Analytics. You compare that to the short threes, so to call them, right? The ones that you're at the line, you're within 25 feet. He went 39 of 120, that is 33% about, right? So slightly below nationally average. Can you coach it out of him
Starting point is 00:10:58 to stop taking the super deep ones? Because if he doesn't take the super deep ones, he's basically an average three point shooter, but he does it on, this isn't a guy only taking one or two threes per game. He is taking like four per game. And that's what makes this interesting. The fact that he's been taking that many, it's almost like the defense has to still
Starting point is 00:11:13 guard him even though the percentages aren't too bright. Like, okay, out of comparison, by raw numbers, if you're just talking made threes, Council made 43 pointers this season. Hunter Dickinson plus the Juan Harris Council made 43 pointers this season. Hunter Dickinson plus DeJuan Harris combined made 43. So even though the percentage is lower for Council, he actually forces you to guard him more, which is actually the more important part. The difference between being like a 30% 3-point shooter and a 35-point shooter on the volume he's taking might be a couple 3s over the course of the season, that's
Starting point is 00:11:45 going to get really spaced out over a 35 to 40 game schedule. It's more important if the defense guards you from three than it is if you're making 30% versus 33%, if that makes sense. Now, the difference between making, say, 30% and 45%, like, sure, there's a line there somewhere in between. But point being, like, I think he actually gets that. And he did shoot the ball better off catch and shoot really struggled off the dribble,
Starting point is 00:12:09 which I don't think he's gonna have to do as much with Darren Peterson and other good players. He also shot well from the free throw line, which tells you plus in addition to in the paint tells you there is more touch there than you might think. And here's the one funny thing. If you look at true shooting percentage, which is an amalgamation of like your field goal percentage,
Starting point is 00:12:25 your two-point shooting, your three-point shooting, your free throw shooting, he actually had a better true shooting percentage this year, barely, than Ryland Griffin had, which again, counts for threes and free throws. And yes, that is mostly because Ryland Griffin was really, he just couldn't make a shot over the last like month or two of the season. But point being, if you said, oh, you're going gonna get the same shooting level as you got from Ryland Griffin, but this kid is better at like everything else that Ryland Griffin is, like he's better passing, he's better defender, you know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:12:53 He's a better driver, he's probably faster. Then that looks great. So if you want even more, a bigger deep dive on it, check out the deep dive we did on it. They get every day or so, already caught that one. As far as you know what his role is going to be on the team, how is he going to fit in necessarily? Let's get to that coming up next. I will say, so council is supposed to have one year left, but I don't, this is what I totally don't understand. The whole JUCO ruling was that you can get an extra year essentially, but what is stopping someone from being like, okay, if JUCO prevented me from earning NIL so I can get that year back, what is stopping them from saying any years of Juco ball doesn't count? And if that ends up happening, then could you hypothetically get two years out of council? I don't know. But I guess
Starting point is 00:14:36 just figure it's going to be one and whatever happens from there kind of happens. I'll say this too. The further we got away from him visiting, and there was a leave visit as well, the more I started thinking, you know, and I think this is a good litmus test you can do with players to decide like, is this somebody you actually want or is it somebody you're just gonna talk yourself into? Because I think last year there were certain gets that maybe you kind of just talked yourself into those.
Starting point is 00:14:58 Like, okay, that's fine. And then the more you get into it, you're like, okay, yeah, I can, this was one that even before he committed, it was like the longer it was going without his commitment, I was kind of starting to think, and I was like, man, I hope they get this This was one that even before he committed, it was like the longer it was going without his commitment, I was kind of starting to think and I was like, man, I hope they get this kid like that would not be fun. So that tells me that I like that tells me that I like to fit right. How he fits in with KU, he can run point for Kansas when
Starting point is 00:15:16 Darren Petersen is out of the game, or if Darren Petersen needs a blow, or if KU wants to run a set where Darren Petersen is off ball, and they want to get him an open look as an offball player. Boom, he fills into that role in those areas. He can also play next to Darren Peterson, you know, on the offensive end of the floor, Peterson can be the one and he can be the two, right?
Starting point is 00:15:36 But honestly, it doesn't really matter as much because we've seen so many great Kansas teams be able to use, you know, multiple point guards, right? And pick kind of your favorite year, right? Whether it's Frank and Devante or Mario and Sharron and Russ Robb or you know, whatever. And a lot of good Kansas teams have had multiple ball handlers, even Devon Dotson and Marcus Garrett, which we're going to get into more in that in a second here. The best middle self teams
Starting point is 00:16:03 typically have two primary ballhandlers. So it doesn't really matter in theory, but I think Peterson is the one who gets a little bit more there. But on the defensive end, I think you view counsel is being like, okay, he can guard the ones at the other end. And then you get a Peterson guard the twos or threes because Peterson is long enough and has the wing span. And so overall, right now, if you're asking me to what's the starting lineup, there's still four scholarships
Starting point is 00:16:25 available for KU. So this can obviously change. But I would probably at this point in time have like, Peterson, Council, Dawson, your addition from Loyola Chicago, Trey White, your addition from Illinois, and then Florida, but don't get the five. And then you'd have El Marco as your first bench point guard and you'd have Bryson Tiller as your first bench big at this point in time. But again, there's gonna be more additions
Starting point is 00:16:52 in the portal at this point in time. Like if you add another good wing, maybe at that point, like Dawson is coming off the bench, right, or maybe would it be crazy like if you do add another wing and you're starting two wings, Trey White, Florid Badunga and Darren Peterson, what if they just decide, okay, well, we need the shooting of Dawson and then counsel's coming off the bench as a super six man.
Starting point is 00:17:10 Like that's entirely possible. So I don't think it's like a lock to start, but right now I'm expecting them to start at the same point in time, if that makes sense. And as far as what he adds to the team, yeah, the athleticism, that's something that's been missing from this team, that they've needed more of it recently, the ability to drive and beat his man off the bounce, the ability to apply rim pressure, the ability to get steals and turn them into easy buckets. Hinn's hasn't gotten as many steals as they've needed to the past two years. The defense in general, the dog mentality, man, like that's something that this team
Starting point is 00:17:40 was missing the last couple of years. And I have a theory. This is something I mentioned during the deep dive that I teased a little bit. And I brought up Marcus Garrett about what Bill Self's preferred roster fit is. Now there was an interesting quote from council. I think it was over on 24 seven sports where he gave an interview and talked about that Bill Self mentioned him wanting to play faster with the two point cards like with Frank and Devante were and in theory council is, you know, one of those and Peterson is the other. I have a different theory on how the preferred roster fit is going here. Maybe
Starting point is 00:18:10 that's what Bill Self wants just from that guard position. But I he's had success with a bunch of different iterations of rosters. I don't think he gets enough credit for that, right? You're talking about old school basketball at the beginning of his days. You're talking about, you know, playing with more kind of these like stretch four or five types with the Morris twins. You're talking about playing more like four guards out and kind of the mid 2010s with what he was able to do. Then, you know, to the most recent title team, which is more like wings around a point card. But I look at that 2019
Starting point is 00:18:41 to 2020. Now, quick disclaimer, I'm not saying these players are carbon copies or even similar like archetypes totally do I'm comparing them to. I'm only comparing the role in which they were asked to play in a similar roster build or similar lineup. And think about it this way, that 2019-20 team had a high usage do it all All-American point card into Von Dotson. That would be your projected all American and Darren Peters. Again, very different games how they go about it, but a on ball dominant like all American type of guard. Can you add a stud big man that year who excelled at dunking basketball, high efficiency shots,
Starting point is 00:19:17 rebounding defense. And obviously, yeah, I don't know that you put the expectation of Flory to be a top five player in college basketball like Doke was that year, but they're asking him to be that similar type of art type and role in terms of what he would do. You have a similar player in terms of floor spacing that what Isaiah Moss gave you in what Jade and Dawson is going to be expected to give you. That team had a couple wings who were strong off ball players and could defend in O'Shy and Christian
Starting point is 00:19:43 Brown. That's kind of the Trey White expectation, be a good off-ball player, be a good defender, right? And then it's kind of TBD on your other big, which would be Big Dave and your other wing to be the other one there. And then that's where counsel comes in. Despite Devon Dodson's excellence, did you know it was Marcus Garrett who led that team in a Cisper game? So you had another guard who was handling it a lot and leading your team there. And Garrett was an insanely good defender. He wasn't much of a shooting threat.
Starting point is 00:20:09 He made just 17 threes that year. Now, Council, I bet you he was gonna make more than that at Kansas, but he gave Kansas a bit of everything did Garrett. Nine points, four and a half assists, four and a half rebounds per game, strong defense. And so with Council, again, I think if you're just comparing the players, like more shooting potential than Marcus Garrett on higher volume, Garrett the better overall defender, council better
Starting point is 00:20:29 like we can go back and forth on why their games are different but the role specifically and the archetype I think there are a lot of similarities to the way Bill Self is building this to how it was in 2019 to 2020. So again not that these players are like for like comps and and not that these players are going to be you know as good as some players are going to be, you know, as good as some of those like his floor going to be as good as dope. I don't know. Like I think floor is going to have a great season, but that's asking a lot of a guy who was like, you know, an all American level good player. Honestly, Peterson could end up being that better than Devon Dotson, which that that might be a little crazy to say because of how good Dotson was on that team. But yeah, can you, you know you be as good in some areas? Oh, no, maybe you don't have to be as good
Starting point is 00:21:07 because that team was the clear and away best team that year. Maybe you could just be close to being as good if you're filling that specific archetype and it gets you to at least being in the conversation as one of the best teams in the country, which is kind of what you're asking for this season from KU. Now, how does this affect the rest of their portal moves, the rest of their off season?
Starting point is 00:21:23 Let's discuss that next. Now, how does this affect the rest of their portal moves, the rest of their offseason? Let's discuss that next. Thanks for joining us here on Locked on Jayhawks, making your first listen every day. OK, so Kansas officially has Melbourne Council. They are now up to 10 scholarship players. They have 14 to go because they have one they have to knock off
Starting point is 00:21:39 because of the final one of the IARP self whenever investigation stuff. OK, so they they four scholarships left. When you look at Peterson and council who I guess, okay. So Peterson, council, El Marco and Dawson, those four players who again, like you could hypothetically play Peterson at the three, you could hypothetically play council or I'm sorry, Dawson at the three,
Starting point is 00:22:04 you could hypothetically play council, or I'm sorry, Dawson at the three, you could hypothetically play a lineup where Marco and Peterson and council are all are all in it together to where you can get some three minutes from some of these guys. But basically, between those four, Peterson, council Dawson, Marco, that gives you four legitimate rotation guys, at least rotation guys among guards, right? And two of three of those two or three of those, I should say, being starters, right? So right now, I just gave my predicted starting five
Starting point is 00:22:29 of three of those as starters, but it could end up being two based on, you know, if you had a wing or something like that, regardless. I think all four of those players you feel like would be in the rotation. Then you have players like Jamarii McDowell and Noah Shelby, who would be in, I think, in McDowell's case, like fringe rotation slash future piece in Shelby's case back end
Starting point is 00:22:48 roster guy practice guy three point shooter again until Kansas adds someone I guess he would be in that JCL role diggie quite role but I'd imagine can you will add someone to fill that role specifically but for KU it feels like you're good to go to guard spot now now like said, would it be shocking if they added somebody in that dig, you call it Jalen Coleman Landrill? No, like I could see that happening.
Starting point is 00:23:10 Maybe you add somebody who was like a future piece to develop. And at the same point in time, if there's like an all conference player who comes at a decent NIL deal that, you know, wants to come to your school, like you make that work, right? But I think realistically, any more targets from the guard
Starting point is 00:23:26 position, we're going to see for KU. Again, if somebody falls in your lap, that changes things here. But most likely to me would probably be Yeah, the Jalen Coleman lands diggy coin type of role or a future piece, right. So if you're looking at where the impact players would come from at this point, probably wing and then I don't think you can call it backup big and impact player, but like among the best players, so to speak, you're trying to get probably Wing would be one, backup big would be two, and then the last two spots, maybe they'd be end up being more filler or that three point shooter roll off the bench or a future piece, whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:24:02 And so I think from an NIL allocation perspective too, like I'm sure council is making a pretty penny, right? He's been a good player everywhere he's gone, but I don't think he's making JT Toppin money either, right? To where this is gonna, you know, prevent you from bringing in a good wing or a good backup big or something like that. So I think from a player archetype perspective,
Starting point is 00:24:23 this move definitely makes it so that like whatever wing you do target, I think the importance there is they have to be able to shoot, they have to be able to open the floor. Like that is the thing with this. Like I said, I'm not overly concerned. Obviously, you know, I want great shooting, but Kansas has had more issues than just the shooting over these past couple of years. And go get the dogs, go get the guys that are going to play well in what Bill Self is going to ask of them to do, and Bill Self is going to ask of them to do and Bill self is going to want them to do. And like I said earlier, it's almost more
Starting point is 00:24:48 important that people guard you and respect you from three, then you know, you shooting and shoot 30%, then you shoot 35%, but nobody guards you right. And I think council at least has that respect a little bit more. There's also a chance that council, you know, maybe you can just with better pieces around him can have and having to play off Baltimore What if he doesn't have a 35% three-point shooting here, right? Like I wouldn't completely dismiss that either but that said even though I am
Starting point is 00:25:15 Stemming that a little bit. It does put more emphasis if you are gonna say okay with Peterson He's a freshman. So we don't know how he's gonna shoot Marco has shooting questions. Trey White, not a high volume shooter, not getting any shootings from Florida Budonga. It makes sense. Obviously, you have it with Dawson, but you want more than one guy. And you look back to that 2019-20 roster construction. Oh, my gosh, he wasn't as good of a three point shooter as he was his final
Starting point is 00:25:40 year when they won the national championship, but he was still a solid three point shooter that your Christian Brown is a freshman shot in like the 40% from three point range is on a bit lower volume. But that's what you're looking for, I think now in a way, if you can get a complete wing that also shoots, that's great. But you definitely want a wing who can shoot I think is how this puts you in that situation, which is totally fine. Because now you can kind of hone in on certain
Starting point is 00:26:02 guys that you're looking for. I don't know for this episode of lockdown Jayhawks, we will have a another episode coming on your Thursday as well talking about the kind of Florida Badoonga saga with Shreyas Lada. See you then on lockdown Jayhawks
