Starting point is 00:00:00 Alan Fieldhouse magic is real. Jamari McDowell saved the KU basketball season, dare I say, the entire KU basketball program. You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked On Podcast Network, your team every day. Holy cow, this is Locked on Jayhawks.
Starting point is 00:00:28 What a doozy that was. Thanks for joining us. everywhere you get your podcast and making your first listen every day and uh thank for making luck on the number one sports podcast network my head is in a bind what a roller coaster k u takes down tc u and overtime 104 to 100 in one of the more i mean we've seen some remarkable comebacks in all in field house history this goes up there with the very best of them we're going to break it all down what happened for k u what changed things on a dime did this save the season um what do we make the whole Darren Peterson game.
Starting point is 00:01:00 We'll get to Game Awards. What's next for KU, all that more in today's episode, which is brought to you by Rougiette. If you've been thinking about taking the next step, now's the time. Head to Ruggiat.com slash locked on college to get 15% off your order for a limited time.
Starting point is 00:01:13 Ruggiat ready, feel present, feel confident, feel ready. And I feel ready for this show because that was a dozy. KU 104, TCU to 20. I, like many others, were ready to have a much different conversation on this show when it was,
Starting point is 00:01:27 you know, for most of the second half, but especially when it was what, like 85 to 76 with, you know, a minute and chain in the game that like it felt like was there going to be an argument to be had that 10 and 5 and 0 and 2 and Big 12 would this become a bubble team and what is going on with KU and what's the dichotomy of how the team is handling the Darren Peterson stuff going on. And then Allen Fieldhouse said, hey, I'm still a thing. Like, I know you lost earlier this year in a close game to Yukon. and you're not used to losing on my home floor like you have done a few times here and there over the last couple of years.
Starting point is 00:02:03 I still got some magic in me. And I don't know if it was Scooter Ward, rest in peace to Scooter looking down and smiling on us all in this game. But it feels like Allen Fieldhouse is back. It feels like this team is back. And it almost felt like to me a little bit of Allen Fieldhouse's soul was snatched away last year when KU blew that game to Houston in a way that we've seen KU steal games from other teams just like this one. And it feels like they snatched it back tonight. I think there were shades of the 2017 West Virginia game. That was the crazy comeback in Alvin. I mean, there was a crazy comeback against West Virginia in 20, I forget it was
Starting point is 00:02:42 15 or 16 too. The 2017 was the one everybody remembers. Shades of that with the comeback. I thought there were shades at the end of the game in overtime of 2018 Seton Hall in the second round when like KU is up. They're like, okay, they're up four. They have a cushion. They're up six. They're good. And then I think it was Desi Rodriguez at the time for Seton Hall. For this, it was like Jaden Pierre or Brock Harding or somebody would go down and just nail a three. And it's like, oh, well, it's not a game over yet. And then Kay would have to make like a good inbound pass and good play.
Starting point is 00:03:10 And then they skated by Seton Hall. And then honestly, it was a little bit of an inverse of last year's Houston game. Just shades of all of those. And this was the classic Allen Fieldhouse comeback. And I think the hope here is that this can be more than just one win. That it's not just that the importance of the biggest positive of this is that we won the game. You avoided the O&2 start. You avoid it everything that comes with that. But it's it's, it's, what the, the win like this can do for you in terms of momentum if you're able to capture it in a
Starting point is 00:03:40 bottle. It's the idea that this could kickstart a really fun level of play if it leads to more confidence, right? This could be the defining moment in the season when it could have gotten really dark and instead you found the light at the end of the tunnel. And, Every good team needs a moment where they kind of come together. And I'm hoping that this was the moment for this team. I mean, beyond just winning the game, beyond avoiding the 0 and 2 start and Big 12 play, and I guess theoretically, like being available to still complete the roadmap, if you want to compete in the Big 12 or finish top, whatever this and that,
Starting point is 00:04:16 I don't want to focus on that too much just because this was an amazing comeback by KU that deserves its flowers. And there was a lot that went in the game that made it pretty incredible and make it like a very unique game to talk about because KU did it with the players probably going to go, if not number one, top three in the NBA draft on bench for a majority of the final seven minutes of the game. I think he was out there for what 30 seconds, maybe you would say of the final seven minutes. And yet at the same point in time, the 30 seconds he was out there, he gets one of the biggest shots of the game that leads to a foul and three free throws, then he knocks them all down to tie it.
Starting point is 00:04:52 So like, it's a very weird game to talk about, right? One of the other biggest positives, though, has to be when Melvin counsel is on the floor and Darren Peterson is not, he is a dude. But also beyond that, it's also Melvin Council in must have moments for KU and in second halves for KU has been nails. If you just isolated Melvin Council in the second half of games this year, you would have a first team All-American Guard. That's how good he's been in the second half and over time. I mean, he had like 10 points, nine points in overtime alone. He finishes 18 for the game to go with eight assists and six rebounds. he just grinds through and then he's ready to go in the second half.
Starting point is 00:05:29 But I think that's where that conditioning comes in that like as the game goes on, he's getting better. Other guys might be getting a little bit more tired. I also wonder like, did we see KU find their guys, so to speak, right? Like with the lineup at the end of the game and we'll see what ends up happening with Darren Peterson here. And, you know, can you integrate here? I mean, that's what's funny.
Starting point is 00:05:50 It feels like the discourse around Peterson is going to be a little, I don't know, like I don't want to say negative. Like, he was so good. And he had 32 points in this game. But it's just not the storyline. Like you would have thought that, oh, Kansas wins by four and overtiming at CCU. Peterson has 32.
Starting point is 00:06:05 That's the storyline. It's Melvin Council. It's the other guys. It's Jamari McDowell, right? And did KU find a little bit better of a lineup playing Trey White at the four? Because I thought it was a bit of a struggle with Bryson Tiller at the four. Now, KU's still going to need Bryson Tiller, even if KU decides the change its starting lineup and go with Trey White more primarily at the four.
Starting point is 00:06:25 Tiller is still your first big off the bench and is going to play a key role and they need to get him going. But did you find that as your primary lineup? Did you find that because one of the biggest negatives in this game was the defense against struggled for KU? And I do have real questions about should they continue to be a switch only team. Like maybe there's certain matchups or stretches in a game where you should or shouldn't be switching everything. But it feels like it's too often ending in possessions where teams are hunting Tiller or Flory with a guard that gets switched on to them or, you know, because here's the thing. Bryson Tiller and Florey are both young big men. Sometimes they're not going to be, I don't know,
Starting point is 00:07:01 like they're going to get lost off the ball. I guess this is the best way of putting it. And there are a lot of times where KU was getting lost off the ball, switching with one of those guys. And I think that's causing KU problems. So is there's some sort of adjustment they can make. The good news is it's better to be able to make those adjustments after a win if you're KU or if you want to switch everything,
Starting point is 00:07:18 is it better to do it when Trey White's in at the four? And then, you know, maybe you go back to the one big lineups. I don't know. also one of the big negatives in the game. Like, Flory had a really big overtime and finished to the game for KU. But again, we were going about to come out of this game where it was like, okay, you know, Florey in the nine previous power four games for KU was averaging closer to 11 points, right above 50% from the field.
Starting point is 00:07:43 It's like, why does this keep happening? And David Punch was winning that matchup. But Florey was made some key plays down the stretch in an overtime for KU. And it probably didn't hurt either that James, Dixon took David punch out at different moments, including that one key possession and overtime. But how about Jamar and McDowell, man? That's another big story. You end up with a guy who scores five points in the game and he is a gigantic storyline because his three was the one that ignited the rally. It was 85-76. Energy's dead. It was 82-76 after you hit a
Starting point is 00:08:17 three and they missed the free throw. So it's like, here's your chance, but they get the rebound and then they hit a three. And that felt like the moment it was like, you're done. But McDowell said, nah, we're back in this. You hit the three. And then McDowell ends up, you know, clinching it with some of those free throws at the end. And he's playing all those minutes. And McDowell has done an admirable defense. Has anybody earned a bigger raise from an NIL perspective in the next off season,
Starting point is 00:08:42 then Jamari McDowell? Has anybody had a bigger glow up for KU than Jamari McDowell? Like, we're going to go into next year being like, oh, if Jamarie McDowell is like the starting two, like cool. So good for him, man, good for him. Because he could have transferred after his first year. You go to transfer after last year, redshirting, right? Thinking, hey, I'm going to be behind these guys.
Starting point is 00:08:59 But he said, I'm going to stick with it. I'm going to try to beat these guys out. And he's beat some of them out. And now he's in a position where he's making huge plays for KU to win games in the big 12. And that's really, really cool on a team that has Darren Peterson, he's playing the same position, and he's making key plays, right? So that's really cool for KU.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Now, obviously, the end of the game is a storyline in its own, not just the comeback, but what happened right before the comeback, you have the ball like KU saves and then O'Marko throws it up the court looking for Darren Peterson and it goes out of bounds because Darren Peterson is asking the coach to pull him from the game. And that's going to lead to some storyline. I don't know. As I'm talking right now, we're just digesting this all. We'll see what Bill Self ends up saying after the game.
Starting point is 00:09:40 But like, did it start bothering Peterson again? Or was it just kind of like Peterson being like, hey, you know, this game's over like no need for me to risk it? And if so, that would not peak the best look possible. But good on Peterson at the very least for, you know, if that is what happened, or even if he wasn't feeling the best, saying, hey, I'm going to try to grid it through for my team. Like, I can't run up and down the court because of the tightness in my leg or whatever, but I can give you one half court possession to try to get you a big three.
Starting point is 00:10:08 And he ends up getting fouled and credit for him for making the free. I mean, who's 13 to 15 at the line, right? Like, I get it. It's not a comfortable situation with, is this team, like, actually better when Peterson's off the floor? Let's just start here. Is KU a better? team without Darren Peterson. I think the long-term answer to that is different than the short-term answer right now.
Starting point is 00:10:31 So let's get into that on the other side. Today's episode of the show is brought to you by Fandual Sportsbook. The college football playoff is here. Some of the performances are incredible.
Starting point is 00:12:08 But the Darren Peterson discourse is going on. And for a moment there, it almost looked like at the very least like, okay, KU is going to lose, but at least Darren Peterson's going to make it the whole game. But then he ends up having to be asked out at the end of the game. And KU makes a big chunk of the comeback. Obviously, they don't complete the comeback without Peterson getting foul. and making the three free throws, but they make a big part of the comeback. And then they outscore T's you in overtime without Darren Peterson on the floor. Peterson still finishes with 32 points
Starting point is 00:12:35 and six rebounds. And it continues to be one of those. Like, it was just like the UCF game. Like I think he was minus four in his plus minus, but he had like, what, 26 points in 23 minutes. You watch him and you're like, he's the best player on the floor, but they're playing worse when he's on the floor. And it just doesn't logically add up in your brain. I think this is what's happening. of some of the missed games against some of the worst opponents, the team wasn't able to gel as much without him. So this is the question, the big question that people are talking about is, can you a better team without Darren Peterson? I think in a vacuum right now, they actually might be. I think they are, right? But long term, they still are a better team with Darren
Starting point is 00:13:16 Peterson. It's almost like if you go back in time to a couple of years ago with Remmy Martin, you know, they're hit a certain point of the seat. Like the first, came back, they had Remy Martin, they lost to Baylor. And I want to say the week after that, did they lose the TCU? And then maybe they had another close game with TCU and then they had another close game that they want to clunker against Texas. Like, they did not play very well when Remy Martin came back. And then after a few games, they found their stride. They found how everybody needs to perform around him, how he needs to perform around everybody else. They got hot in the Big 12th tournament, carried it over into the NCAA tournament and won it all.
Starting point is 00:13:55 I think that's what we're seeing these couple games against UCF and TCU. The talent is clearly there for Darren Peterson. But KU learning how to play off of him, him learning to play off the others, is still a work in progress. I still think it can come. I mean, when you have a talent like Peterson, you don't just give up on it. So I think in the long term, if KU can stick with it, if Peterson can stay on the floor, and if Peterson can continue to play game in and game out,
Starting point is 00:14:25 not be choppy in and out of the lineup, Kate will be a better team out of it. But if that stuff does continue, maybe the lesson today was, well, in that situation, maybe it is better for all parties to shut it down, right?
Starting point is 00:14:39 My personal preference is that Darren Peterson gets healthy and that he continues to ball out. Kansas learns to play with him. He learns to play with the rest of his teammates. And I don't want to make it sound like it's like a, I don't think it's like him being selfish or anything like that. I think it's just like, think about it when you have a guy who is taking a majority of the shots and is such a alpha in the universe on the basketball court it affects everybody else in where they need to stand you know how often they're getting the basketball how they play off ball how they play on ball it just has a big impact and again that's where you you couldn't play him in some of these by games because you was hurt but you wish you would have been able to because then it could have you know ironed out some of the kinks in a bit of a lower pressure environment
Starting point is 00:15:23 And that's what you're seeing at the start of Big 12 play here. So great on KU for getting the win. The saga will continue a little bit. But yeah, let's just focus more there. What to come back for KU and that's part of it. All right, moments and plays of the game. There was that really fun, like what was it, a 9-0 run at the end of the first half, where you get like a Peterson three and he had a drive-and-kick to Melvin Council for three.
Starting point is 00:15:45 Then Peterson throws one high off the window and in. Trey White had the Euro. Flory had the block in there. That was a cool one to swing the score at the end of the first. half, but obviously he didn't carry over. For a second, it looked like the bad plays of the game for KU were going to be, obviously the Peterson one where he asked out and it was thrown in the bounds. Also the Tiller one where he could have had a layup and instead it ends up him trying to save
Starting point is 00:16:08 it from going out of bounds, tries to throw it off the defender, stays in bounce and leads a transition three for TCU the other way. Those two were like the, if they were, would have lost, like those would have been the moments that stuck out in my mind. But I think it all comes to me to start with, like to me the play, game is the Jamari McDowell three because it gave them life. It gave them hope and it started things off. And then you get the Melvin Council in one. You get the Flory tip in on the council miss and then helping to force the turnover. You get the Peterson fouled making all three free throws.
Starting point is 00:16:39 You get the moment where you know, you barely get the pass from El Marco to Melvin Council on the inbound against the press. He barely is able to hold on from it being a steel. And then he's able to eventually lob it up ahead to Trey White for a dunk. Those are all the plays of the game, or the moments, but to me, it is the Jamari McDowell three that kind of kickstarted at all. Our stat of the game in this one, Kansas shot 52%. Like, the defense has not been very good, the first two big 12 games. The offense was really good for KU in this one, 52% from the floor, 40% from three point range, and you got to the free throw line a ton.
Starting point is 00:17:12 30 made free throws, obviously some of that coming in the end when you're getting fouled on purpose, but still impressive for KU'd have 52, 40, 75 shooting splits overall. you actually led 21 to 13 in points off turnovers. That has not been an area where KU's been consistent this year, and TCU's usually been pretty good at. So that would certainly be one to stick with. If KU would have lost, we would have pointed to the offensive rebounds.
Starting point is 00:17:35 TCU had a 16 to 9 offensive rebound advantage. And honestly, that's a number that looked worse until I would say maybe the last, like, I don't know, the overtime, I guess you would say. It felt like KU actually did go on boards in overtime. So that would be one of you were looking at. And in the end, TCU was up 20 to 13 in second chance points. If you would have lost, those would have been what we pointed out. But KU was able to outscoring points in the paint, 46 to 38.
Starting point is 00:18:01 This is probably the stat of the game, actually. It's the fast break points. We mentioned coming in TCU, one of the best teams in the country in scoring the fast break. They're averaging 17 fast break points per game. They were only given up seven. So they were a plus 10 on average coming into this one in plus minus and fast break, basically. KU was plus 5, 14 to 9, and then win by 4. taking away one of TCU's strengths.
Starting point is 00:18:23 So there's your stat of the game is the fast break points for KU. Awards in this one is the too much award. Listen, I get it. The Darren Peterson thing is a story and everything. Do we really need to be doing split screen watching Darren Peterson put on sleeves on his leg while watching the game? That feels like a bit of overkill to me. I don't really need to see that personally.
Starting point is 00:18:46 The Good News Award, beyond KU winning the game, got another football commitment. So check out that episode, if you haven't already. And then the once again, we did this last game, or maybe it was two games ago, we'll do it again. I don't always get fouled, but when I do, it seems to be an end one award. Melvin Council, which happened twice, once at the end of regulation when KU's mounting the comeback and then the one in overtime. He doesn't get a ton of free throws, but like when he does, they are and ones, I feel like like 90% of the time. The last award we have to get out, give out here is the failed jinx award. and that goes to Fran Frasilla.
Starting point is 00:19:22 I don't know if you were listening with volume or if you were just too locked in, did or did not notice this. So, Darren Peterson gets fouled, KU's down 87, 84 at the end of regulation. He's obviously going to shoot three free throws. Peterson steps into the free throw line and Fran Frasilla says something to the tune of,
Starting point is 00:19:39 I should have pulled the exact quote. There's no way he's going to miss any of these. Really? Oh, I guess he was right. I don't know, maybe we want to be nice. The You Were Right Award goes to Fran Frasilla, but that felt like trying to be a jinx award, and it did not work out for old Fran.
Starting point is 00:20:00 All right, let's give out our game ball's offense, defense, overall. What is next for KU? This is locked on Jayhawks. Today's episode of the show is brought to you by Ruggiet. Let's talk about something men don't bring up, but absolutely should. Stress from work, money, life. It doesn't just switch off at night.

Thanks again for joining us here on the show. Don't forget check out all of our other shows. We've been breaking out every transfer portal commit for KU football so far,
Starting point is 00:21:09 and I'll have more KU football and KU basketball content throughout the week here on Locked on Jayhawks. I'll just give out some game balls. Offensive game ball for KU. It's interesting because if you're just looking at it from the raw stats, you would give it to Darren Peters and 32 points on just 18 shots is insane efficiency. But you could also be like, okay, but, you know, some of that was when you were down so much. And you did have four turnovers in there.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Trey White had 22 points. That was our one of our Hawks the Sores, him and Melvin Council as our Hawks DeSore. and White ended up with the 22 points. He was just efficient all game long for KU. He also had just one turnover. He had an offensive rebound. Melvin counsel had 18 points in there. Flory had 16.
Starting point is 00:21:54 It's funny because Melvin has the least efficient of the guys with double-digit points, five of 15 shooting. So here's what we're going to do. But he also had eight assists to just one turnover, which is obviously very, very impressive. We're going to just give it to Melvin counsel in the second half in overtime. because Melvin, this is crazy, too, Pearson at 18 in just the second half. So Melvin Council, and maybe it's not even second half and overtime because he was two
Starting point is 00:22:22 for nine in the second half. It's really the final seven minutes of the game. The final seven minutes of the game, Melvin Council has, what, the end one, and then he has the nine points in overtime. So the final seven minutes of the game, he had 11 points. That's who's going to be our offensive MVP is Melvin Council over the final seven minutes of the game. Our defensive game ball for KU here. So if you look at just the stats, you could point to Florey having a block and a steal. He was one of two players who had at
Starting point is 00:22:52 least one and one. Trey White had a block and two steals. So they would be, you know, candidates for that reason. But I did feel like, again, like TCU was attacking KU's switch scheme and taking advantage of at times Florey and Tiller getting lost off ball more than on ball. I think it happened to Tiller more than it did to Flore. But also, David punched, the guy who was guarded by Florey, sometimes it was other guys, but ended up with a 20-point game. I actually thought Darren Peterson played really well on the defense vend when he was out there.
Starting point is 00:23:19 He would be in my honorable mention category here. But my answer I'm going to go with is El Marco Jackson. Like, El Marco played 23 minutes, only had two points. He had two rebounds, two assists, I had two turnovers. It's not a sexy stat line, but why was he out there so much in the moments they trusted? I mean, one was, you know, you're limited with Peterson out and who you can play. But El Marco had more trust from Bill Self at the end than Bryson Tiller. And there's one simple reason why is defense, because he could not trust Tiller on defense in this game.
Starting point is 00:23:53 And he could, El Marco Jackson. El Marco helped on the defensive end. And here's where he had a gigantic difference. Five steals for El Marco Jackson. Five steals. That's a career high. El Marco gets our defensive game ball. Our overall MVP here for KU, do I dare give it to Jamari McDowell?
Starting point is 00:24:12 It's five points in 14 minutes. He had a plus 11. Amargo was plus 12 in 23 minutes. I could make the argument, and I kind of want to. But let's go with Melvin Council. Again, like when Peterson's out of the game, he just becomes the alpha for KU. And all the shots he made down the stretch, he goes five of 15, which isn't super efficient, but he's making the key ones and he's getting to the free throw line he's making his free throws
Starting point is 00:24:40 he's rebounding the basketball he had six rebounds he had eight assists um just one turnover he had a block he played 41 minutes for k u so i'm i'm going to go with melvin council as my overall MVP so offensive game ball uh officially to um melvin council the final six minutes if we want to give it to a full game we probably should still give it to darren peterson for the 32 points Honorable mention, Trey White, defensive game ball, El Marco, with honorable mention to Darren Peterson. And then overall game ball, we're going to Melvin Council here. So what's next now for KU and the Jayhawks? So that's on Saturday there at West Virginia.
Starting point is 00:25:19 And part of the other reason it was so important to win this game, your next two games are at West Virginia and versus Iowa State. Iowa State's been one of the best teams in the country. There's a chance like one-in-one wouldn't be the worst two-game stretch in a vacuum because you're one-in-one right now. You want to try to go two-and-oh, obviously. But at West Virginia, a place you've struggled to win, and versus Iowa State, one of the better teams, is not an easy situation for you to be in. And the worst possible thing could have been if you lost this game and then you lose a tough road game, you've struggled on the road recently, you've struggled in Morgantown recently, your own three and having to beat Iowa State. That would not be a comfortable situation. So this was a huge win, but also, like I said earlier, can this lead to more momentum?
Starting point is 00:25:59 Can this lead to you winning on the road? Can this lead to you winning in Morgantown where wins have been scarce there recently in the Bill Self era for kids? KU, and can you turn that momentum then into trying to upend Iowa State and showing that, you know, you have that mojo and you can be one of the better teams in the country.
