Starting point is 00:00:00 Not so great news if you're wanting Melvin Council back for another season. Also, Darren Peterson got some interesting comments from Bill Self today. You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks. Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's going on, Derek Johnson, with another edition of Locked on Jayhawks. Thanks for making it your first listen every day. And thank you every dayers catching each in every episode of the show. on this bonus episode, we're going to be breaking down some stuff with Melvin Council and just general roster thoughts as we look ahead to a little bit of next year as well.
Starting point is 00:00:42 We'll finish up with some of the latest news, including what Bill Self had to say on Darren Peterson today. So some pointed comments to say the least here. And thank you, the everydayers catching each and every one of our shows. Let's just start there with some of the news as it pertains to potentially Melvin Council. So there was a court case going on right now, Joey Aguilar, who was a former. Juco quarterback transferred up the ladder through the D1 ranks. And this past year wound up a member of the Tennessee football team. So he had finished up his final year of eligibility this year.
Starting point is 00:01:17 But obviously, if you remember last year, the reason that like Diego Pavia and some of these players were able to get another year is because Pavia was able to win a lawsuit against the NCAA, basically allowing that, you know, a jukego. Jucco year didn't count or this one Jucco year didn't count. And it prevented the ability to, you know, make NIL dollars during that season. And so he was allowed and many other players were allowed another season. And so off of that same basis, Joey Aguilar, the quarterback at Tennessee, tried to sue the NCAA to just basically under the guise of community college years
Starting point is 00:01:56 shouldn't count at all, right? And so the importance of that is it pertains to Melvin Council. and honestly it would have pertained or would pertain to other KU football players too, right? Like you think of the die or Jermaine Dye or the Dye brothers, for instance. You think of any KU football or KU basketball or any KU sports players who have been at the Juko level. And obviously this would be, you know, a national change for things across the country and how this would impact things. But it was denied.
Starting point is 00:02:27 And so again, where that leaves the council. So council spent two seasons at the Juco. level, then went on to play three years at the Division I level. He played one year at Wagner, one year at St. Bonaventure, now one year at Kansas, right? The fact that if his Juco years wouldn't have counted, if this would have been ruled in Aguilar's favor, then technically counsel would be a junior now because the juco years wouldn't count and he would have another year at Kansas. But because the Knoxville judge denied Aguilar's preliminary injunction for another year of eligibility now that that automatic path for counsel to get that extra year doesn't become so
Starting point is 00:03:09 easy i do think there's another court case coming that that could have a potential impact on this but as of right now say this have the expectation that this is going to be the final season for melvin counsel i guess the only season we see him in a k u uniform which is unfortunate because he's been so fun to watch in a k u uniform but just enjoy what you have the rest of this season right just to enjoy what you get the rest of the games now with Melvin Council and kind of savor what you get from that perspective. So how does this potentially affect the roster for next year? Plus some of the latest news, we'll get to that next. This episode of the show is brought to you by five-hour energy,
Starting point is 00:03:49 the five-hour energy flavor draft with 18 different flavors to choose from, including new options like confetti craze, fruity rainbow or cotton candy. There is something for everyone. The board is set. The flavors are ready. And I got my number one pick ready for the five. five-hour energy flavor draft. I mean, a lot of flavors that you could debate for number one, right?
Starting point is 00:04:08 Like, if you want to go with the classics, the cherry, the grape, the berry, I wouldn't blame you there, right? The classics are the classics for a reason. Peach mango, though, that's pretty good, right? Tropical versus strawberry watermelon if you want something new. I love the strawberry banana personally. Like, that would be in the running for number one for me. So, and honestly, maybe it's an underrated flavor.
Starting point is 00:04:28 I don't even know. The five-hour energy shots give you a boost to zero sugar. They have a lot of upcoming flavor innovations planned as well. So check out some of the limited time flavors and let five-hour energy know if there's certain ones you want to see come back. Thanks again for joining us here on Locked on Jayhawks. And where does this leave KU? If no Melvin counsel on next year's roster, not that we were counting on it, we were hoping for it, but we weren't counting on it for next year's roster. Just kind of a, I don't know, a re-look at next year's roster. And you look at 15 scholarships available. They'll be past the self-imposed sanctions, I guess, whatever you want to call it. So I have them down for four scholarships available under the assumption, obviously Peterson going pro, and then all your seniors graduate away like Jaden Dawson, now Melvin Council,
Starting point is 00:06:29 Tray White, G, and Gala and stuff like that. I don't know what's going to happen to Flory, right? Like could Florey GoPro? Could Flory entertain a bigger offer in the transfer portal? Who knows, right? But I do have him back as just part of this. I will say this. It doesn't become interesting because I, like many others,
Starting point is 00:06:47 have been under the idea, under the guys that Bryson Tiller is going to be like an all big 12 candidate and a big, a big, a big, two player of the year type of player for Kansas next season. is there any world where if Kansas right, Taylin Kinney probably cost a pretty dollar for KU to bring in. If Duda came back, that would be a probably pretty high expense for KU. What if you do go out and get Tyron Stokes on the wing?
Starting point is 00:07:15 Also probably pretty expensive. And that doesn't even account for, you know, some of the other guys like Davy on Adkins or Marco Jackson, so on, of however much that adds in. Is there any chance in the world that KU would be put in a position like Texas Tech was last off season where they basically had to say, hey, we can't pay J.T. Toppin and
Starting point is 00:07:34 Christian Anderson and Darien Williams, and they basically chose Top and Anderson and then had to choose from there. Is there any chance in the world that this comes down to KU having to if they get Flory back, would they have enough to afford Tiller and Stokes or would they have to choose one of the two, which would be unfortunate? Or does this come down to you like, what if Flory just goes pro and then you do have all the money in the world to pay Bryson Tiller? That will be something I'm curious to watch in the off season to see because that's going to be a lot of money to expend. I don't know if you could make all of that work.
Starting point is 00:08:04 Obviously, hopefully you could. And obviously, the NIL game would help you kind of get over the bump there. But that certainly would be a big question, I guess, for donors would be the ones that you're looking at. But I do like the potential backcourt of Kenny and Jackson. Kenny is this really good shot maker and three point shooter and stuff. And then you have Jackson who can be the good defender, right? Like what you're coming in is a, like the question is going to be, can you hold up
Starting point is 00:08:27 defensively. Well, Marco can take the primary defensive possession for KU. And then Kenny can be the offensive guy. And you have an athletic guy with a shooting guy, right? Like, obviously they can do a little bit of both each of them. But that kind of works. If you have McDowell is, again, like your seventh or eighth man, that's totally cool. And then, you know, theoretically, you could have a front court of Tiller and Bedunga. If you can't afford it, that'd be really good with like Adkins and Mbia coming off the bench. And, you know, wouldn't surprise me if Perry's playing a role just because of the length. And I don't athleticism and defense and I feel like that's going to lead to trust with Bill Self.
Starting point is 00:09:00 So very interesting roster right now is still some scholarships to fill. And obviously, KU fans hoping the Tyron Stokes eventually commits to KU, but that one seems to be up in the air as well. So either way, KU is going to have a lot of money and a lot of options. So that'll be a good thing for KU. All right, let's finish up with some of our latest news, including some comments from Bill Self on Darren Peterson. I'm Kleea Butler, host of Locked on Women's Basketball.
Starting point is 00:09:27 And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight real can ever capture. It was a heavyweight showdown between number three South Carolina and number seven LSU and the game cost rose to the occasion. South Carolina secured a hard fought 79 to 72 victory to stay atop the SEC standings using a balanced offensive attack to outlast the Tigers. Tessa Johnson led the way with 21 points while Raven Johnson added 19. Medina O'Cott dominated the paint with a double double finishing with 12 points and 17 rebound. while Joyce Edwards chipped in 10 points to round out the scoring. With the statement win, the Gingcocks now turn their attention to a road matchup at number 23, Alabama on Thursday.
Starting point is 00:10:12 These moments are earned off the clock, those long before the lights ever come on. The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes, and coming back for more every time. Mazda puts that same drive into every detail. Wins define the moment, putting in the work, that defines you. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you. And thank you for joining us. Starting point is 00:10:40 So interesting quotes from Bill Self on Darren Peterson today. It feels like the post game of the Oklahoma State game was one of the few times that you could almost get like it wasn't full frustration, but you could you could sense that Bill Self was starting to dip his toe in the water of frustration with the situation and was kind of starting to the cocoon was opening up on the way. wings of the butterfly, so to speak, right? And it felt like today was a little bit more of the same where it was like a combination of still protecting the kid and still trying to be reasonable with it, but also like a few comments here or there of being like, well, right? So here's
Starting point is 00:11:19 one of the quotes. The basis of what's being said, you can't argue with, right? That would go kind of in the column of maybe the frustrated side of it, right? He hasn't finished games consistently. The reasons why he finished, he's saving himself for the NBA or load management. end of that kind of stuff. That to me couldn't be more false. So again, it's him pushing back at certain things, but also acknowledging the frustration over other things, right? Now, he does go into his kind of work ethic stuff, right? He says, I don't know that we've had a guy who studies the game has, has, has more so than what Darren Peterson has. He loves ball. He can't get enough ball. I think that those are things that are probably hurtful as much as anything. So say those type of
Starting point is 00:11:57 things and nobody's putting more time in outside of practice, working on their game or an individual level than probably what he has over a lifetime. I don't think it'd be close. So I don't buy those scenarios at all. And here's kind of the big quote to finish. The bottom line is there's a way to change the narrative. And again, this is one of those where it's like, you're kind of acknowledging that some of this stuff needs to be fixed, but you're also trying to defend Peterson. The bottom line is there's a way to change the narrative. Play, finish. Now, if his body allows him to, fantastic. If it doesn't allow him to, they'll say something again the next game. But that's the way to get people to quit talking. It's not me saying it's not fair. I don't think that's really keeps
Starting point is 00:12:37 anybody from having an opinion on it at a national level or on this level or on any level to be quite candid. So basically just saying like, listen, I can defend you all you want. At this point, it's kind of balls in your court. Balls in your court. Finish the game. So that was a little bit pointed there. And hopefully it leads to some extra motivation. And we see the best version. of Darren Peterson, this next, you know, I guess home stretch of the season, so to speak, right? Some other quick updates here, KU Women's Basketball, Big one on Saturday at Kansas State. So they're sitting 16 and 11, 6 and 9 in conference play. They beat K State by 22 in Allen Fieldhouse, but now playing on the road, going to be a little bit more difficult.
Starting point is 00:13:18 This is a game you have to win if you have any chance left of making the NCAA tournament. And then you're going to need to steal one of your last two against Texas Tech at home, are at Oklahoma State, two teams who are in the top 30 on Bart Torvik. And then it'd be the big 12th tournament after that where you're going to need to do some damage as well. But at the very least, if we're talking to NIT, still probably got to win at least one of those three games there. KU Baseball, they ended up winning two out of three against Texas Rio Grande Valley. They actually just got upset at Lamar, who again, decent, you know, group of five team, I guess it would be the way of putting it. But still, you don't love to see, you know, racking up a couple losses early.
Starting point is 00:13:57 this will be a good test. McNeice State is pretty good, and that'll be their next series coming up. I think actually starting today on Friday and continuing through the weekend, and then they're at Minnesota, and then it's finally home for the first time on the season. That'll do it for this bonus episode of Locked on Jayhawks. You can find our show anywhere you get your podcast, including on our YouTube page where you can like and subscribe to the show.
