Absolutely dominant outing for KU on senior day is the offense or the positive vibes back for KU headed at the right time of the season into the postseason.
You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What's going on? Derek Johnson here with another edition of Locked on Jayhawks.
Thanks to making it your first listen every day and think of it every dayers catching each and
every episode of the show.
I'm losing my voice a little bit.
I'm on the road.
I'm out in Arizona,
but we're here to bring you the postcast,
because KU just blew out Kansas State.
The offense looked really good.
We're going to break it all down on this episode.
Get to game awards,
our dunks of the game,
what this all means for KU moving forward
with the Big 12 tournament
and everything beyond that.
And today's episode of the show
is brought to you by Fandul Sportsbook.
Fandul is giving a way to turn that energy
into even bigger potential wins
with a college basketball parlay profit boost
at Defandrel.com to get started today.
So first things first, is the offense back now for KU, right?
Is one good game against a not very good defense?
Is that enough for us to declare the offense is back, right?
I mean, at one point in the second half, KU, I think it was like,
they showed on the broadcast 18 of 23 on field goals in the second half.
So like, this was a stupendous offensive game for KU.
You look at the shooting efficiencies,
You look at the offensive rebounding advantage that they had,
the second chance points advantage, the bench points advantage,
was incredible for a team that doesn't only get that,
albeit some of that is diluted a little bit or I guess the inverse of that,
but because of the senior day stuff.
But, you know, this was just an incredible offensive performance for KU,
and even though it isn't against a great team,
after what we saw against Arizona State in Arizona,
you needed a bit of a slump buster.
You needed to have a game where you went three for four with a double
in a home run. You needed to have that ability to kind of shake the rust off and have a positive
impact here on the offensive end. Just to feel like, hey, we're seeing the ball go in the basket
repeatedly and it's going to get you on a positive vibe, maybe make you feel a little bit better
going into the Big 12th tournament, right? And just having those positive vibes back too, because
that was part of the recent losses for KU is that it wasn't just that they lost the game and
that like in the Arizona State game, nothing's going in. Arizona game like good opponent on the road.
I don't know, the effort level, the energy, the positive body language, it just didn't feel there in those games.
And it felt like in this game, the energy level returned.
Now, the challenge is, can you capture that same level of energy each and every game moving forward?
Can you be consistent with those levels of energy each and every game moving forward?
And especially without the tool that is Allen Fieldhouse that is such a benefit to you as a team that we saw all year long really give a big boost to this team and where they play.
played better all season long.
And so if they can do that in these other games,
then it becomes super important for KU and becomes super valuable.
But that will kind of be the big question.
But as it was for today, that was there.
And that was nice to see after some of the previous games,
where that wasn't necessarily the case.
But I mean, 104 points.
You shoot 59%, shoot 42% from three.
I mean, again, like great execution, offensive game.
You got it from a bunch of different areas.
You end up with, you know, what, one?
two, three, four players with 13 or more points if you're KU.
So just balance kind of scoring all the way through.
Trey White, who's had some, you know, obviously he had the Houston game in the recent runs
where he played really well, and that was another home game.
He's had some other down games.
That was good to see him, you know, make a bunch of threes.
He hits a couple in the early going, gets him going, puts up 23 points on five threes
with a double double and 11 rebounds, right?
Like Melvin Council on senior day had a near triple double.
He was two rebounds away from.
doing it. That was really cool to see, right? Especially how much he cared. And I guess we get
headband Melvin. We'll see if that's a thing moving forward for the finality of the season or if that
was just a senior day thing. Darren Peterson was incredible in this game. And again, like, you know,
you're playing K-State here, who is not a very good team. But what Darren Peterson looked like
today was everything you could hope for. 27 points, 10 of 15 shooting. He was super efficient. He's
six of seven at the line. This is what's crazy to me.
was only one of two from three.
The three-point attempt rate for Peter, like, in a given game, if he's taken 10
shots, on average, like, how many of them are three-pointers?
Four, five?
Complete cast there.
There was only two on a bunch of shots this game, which tells me that he was attacking
at a high level in this game.
But what really stood out to me with Peterson and this one was the four assists,
doing all that in 29 minutes is pretty incredible.
It seems like he's on a run of recent play over the past couple games where his,
his creation for others, his ability to set others up with passes and get assists.
You know, for a while there, that was not happening for KU and for Peterson.
And over these last couple games, it has increased a little bit.
Like, that was something in the Arizona State game, he did not shoot well.
He was three of 18, but he did that a little bit more.
And then in this game, we saw it, I think, even to another degree against Kansas State.
So again, how does that hold up against some of the better defenses and some of the better teams,
which we'll see at the Big 12th tournament next week?
you'll see in the NCAA tournament the following week.
That's kind of the question.
But it is on a positive up arrow,
which is great news for both,
I think Peterson's individual game,
his draft status,
but also KU as a team and where they want to go.
And by the way, how about this?
Like Cole Rosario,
Jayden Dawson, they're alive, man.
Cole Rosario gets that cool putback dunk in the first half.
He hits a corner three in the first half.
You end up getting Jaden Dawson nailing a three.
I posted this on Twitter earlier.
This was the first game.
that both Jaden Dawson and Cole Rosario
made a three-pointer in the same game
since the Princeton game,
which I think was like November 15th,
which like, you know, at the beginning of the season,
we thought one of them,
Rosario or Dawson, was going to start,
and the other was going to play a big role off the bench.
And it turns out neither has really been a part of the rotation.
So it was cool to see kind of both of them have at least a moment
to contribute here in this one.
And I think just in general, like piggy-mac, you know, off of that,
getting to go deep in your bench
is always a good thing.
I mean, it's cool to see a guy like Wilder Evers hit a three at the end
to get you to the 100 point, right?
It's cool to see some of those guys like start.
It's cool to see Dawson and Rosario hit threes and stuff.
It's cool to see Paul M. Bia throw down a couple dunks
and have a nice assist to Peterson late in the second half.
Like all those things are cool to see for guys that work hard
and don't get to play as much.
Also, you know, if you want to say,
okay, game reps are important for guys you're trying to develop
and you never know which guys you're trying to develop.
up coming back or not. So that becomes a little more of a tough conversation. But I think when I look at it for
Kansas team that almost just felt like it's lost a little bit of steam as the season has come toward its
climax here and is going to be in a situation next week or you're going to play some really tough
teams. And, you know, if you win all your games, you'd be playing three games in three days. And then
you have the NCAA tournament out of that and you don't have the deepest bench in the world. And
you do have some guys who have been dealing with things,
getting to go deeper on the bench and getting those guys a little bit of extra rest to,
like right before all those happens,
that's a positive as well for KU, obviously.
So the only negative that I think you could really point to in this game,
I mean, I guess you could take, you know, like KCSt put up 85 points.
They had a pretty efficient day offensively,
like probably not one of KU's better defensive games, though.
Some of that gets relaxed a little at the end of the game.
And I don't know.
Outside of that, like the really only other thing that I would mention is just like, K-State's really bad.
That's one of the biggest negatives.
K-State is so bad that I'm sitting there watching this game being like, how much can I really take away from this?
You know?
Like, I'm hopeful that the offensive performance here, that the energy they showed is a sign that this recent skid they were on is over and that they can carry this over to future games.
But it's also hard to tell because K-State is that bad, that it might just be you just played K-State, you know?
and that's just how bad they are this year, right?
But bottom line is this.
Beating Kansas State doesn't change the outlook of who you are, what you are.
It doesn't change your resume in any meaningful way here if you're KU or give you a season altering or season changing or season boosting win.
It doesn't do any of those things.
But what it does is this.
It locks you into a first round by in the big 12 tournament, right?
Because now you're in a situation where I was looking earlier.
It looked like Iowa State was going to.
win. Let me see if that's gone final
over here.
No, I don't think it's going.
Yeah, it's gone final. Okay, so Iowa State
crushed Arizona State. That's unfortunate.
But basically that means both teams are
12 and 6. And then
oh, wow, did Texas Tech?
Okay, so Texas Tech
is at BYU. So this puts
KU in a situation here where
they're guaranteed
to at least be the foreseed because
they will have the same record with Iowa State, but
KU against Arizona will be one in one.
and Iowa State will be 0-1, so that'll be the tiebreaker.
If Texas Tech were to lose to BYU, then it would be a three-way tie with those teams,
and then it becomes a record amongst those three.
KU would be 2-1 versus Tech in Iowa State.
Texas Tech would be at that point, what, they'd be at Iowa State,
so they'd be 1-1 versus 2, and then Iowa State would be 1-2.
So KU would be the three-seed if Texas Tech loses to BYU,
which I think would be really helpful because right now,
if you are in the 4-seed, you're playing the 5-seed,
as long as they win their first game in the quarterfinals,
and that would be Iowa State, which would be quite the quarterfinal matchup of Kansas and Iowa State.
We're used to seeing that in the championship, if not the semifinals, the Big 12th tournament.
That would be winner gets to play Arizona.
So we'll break down that a little bit more coming up in segment three.
But, you know, overall, the offense looks good here for KU.
K State bad and hopefully the good vibes carry into next week.
And also, you know, sometimes it's just better not to feel worse.
And so it was better not to feel worse today.
and you got to win,
and this probably keeps you at least on the four line
in the NCAA tournament with a chance
if you can do some damage to maybe move back up to a three.
All right, let's continue on with some of our game awards
and moments of the game, stat of the game, all that next.

All right, moments and plays of the game.
I want to separate this up.
We have our best dunk of the game candidate.
So we have the Peterson to Tray White Aleoup to make it 16 to 11.
Those are cool dunk, especially earlier in the game,
when there's a little bit closer.
Then you get the Melvin Council of Floridunga Alleyoop to make it 20 to 15.
Good little dunk there.
Then you get the Melvin Council of Flory Bedunga and won Alliup over the defender.
They made it 37 to 26 at the time.
You get Darren Peterson to Florida Bedunga Duonga Aliu to make it 56-42.
This one was really cool.
you get the Flory like one-handed Alleyoop that made it 70 to 52.
And then, you know, we've got two Paul M-Bia dunks to pick in our dunk of the game at the end.
And then M-Bia made a pass to Peterson for the dunk that made a 94 to 67.
I am going to go to the Melbourne Council of Flory Bedunga Aleoup that was an and one.
It made it a double-digit lead, 3726.
Big posterization.
That would be my one.
But I don't know.
I thought about doing them Bia to Peterson.
and people love Pollittia.
So the two dunks he had and then the assist that led to the Peterson dunk,
like that was kind of cool there, right?
Our stat of the game here, KU's shooting 59%.
That certainly sticks out in terms of stat of the game here,
if you're KU, right?
In terms of the most efficient offensive games of the season,
this was KU's second most efficient, so that would stand out.
Actually, the third most was the case they came,
the first most was that opener against Green Bay in which you just slaughtered them.
But, yeah, I mean, shooting 59% of the field, 42 from 3, like,
that's going to be a stat of the game just because, like,
your offense was so freaking good.
The rebound battle being 45 to 28, 12 to 7 on the offensive glass,
you took advantage of that.
Obviously, you missed, you know, a much lower percentage of your shots,
but that's part of it, too.
Points of the pay being 48, 36, you were getting easy points kind of as part of this.
And then the assists being 23 to 9,
which showed how well you shared the ball and prevented them
from getting maybe open looks off the ball, I think all of those.
would certainly stand out in this one.
But yeah, to me, it's just the offense efficiency,
just in general,
offensive efficiency being the second highest mark in the season.
Like, that is the stat of the game for me,
especially after it came off of some absolute clunkers
for KU on the offensive end in some of the recent games.
But our awards of the game here,
the what the heck of the game?
There was a moment in the first half
where Darren Peterson's like in the corner
on the right in front of the K-State bench, obviously.
And one of the K-state assistants, like, stands up
and puts his hand on the lower back of
Aaron Peterson.
Peterson turns out like, what are you doing, man?
And I don't know what he's doing.
Like, what the heck?
What are you doing?
Like, what is your goal there?
That was just really weird.
And yeah, should not happen like ever at all.
So that was odd.
Also, this one was just the refs unfortunate,
finally blowing a whistle for Darren Peterson,
but not letting him play through an award.
Because Darren Peterson has not gotten a great missile so far this season,
especially over the last end of the season.
But there were three times in the first like five minutes of the game
where the refs waved off a play,
where like he would have made a really good play.
And it was like, oh, now we're, like, he,
he threw like a sick lobbed a floor.
You threw it out of dunk on an alley-up.
Would have been really cool, but didn't count.
He had one that would have been like an and-one on a drive
that didn't count because they called it on the floor.
He had another one that was like a cool little kind of like floater jump shot
that would have been an end one again.
And again, it was on the floor.
So I was like, come on, of course.
And then the last one here is CBS, not understanding the tiebreaker rule.
They showed multiple times.
They showed like at the beginning of the game,
I think they showed it again later in the second half.
I can't remember maybe they showed it again another time throughout.
But throughout the broadcasts at different points,
they showed like the graphic of what the big 12 tournament seeding,
what the bracket would look like right now.
And they had Iowa State as the four seed in Kansas and the five seed.
I'm just like, you guys have no idea what the,
and I like the CBS production and stuff.
Like I love Brad Nestler, all this stuff.
This is like, how do you guys not understand?
Like Kansas has the tiebreaker over Iowa State.
It is based on the record against the number one team since they split against each other head to head.
And Kansas went one-on-one against Arizona and Iowa State went over one.
Kansas is the higher city than Iowa State.
So I apologize if that confused anybody that they're like, oh, no, we're behind Iowa.
No, Kansas is in front of Iowa State.
And at this point with both teams winning, Kansas will be ahead of Iowa State and has secured a double-by in the Big 12th tournament.
Let's talk more about that big 12 tournament.
We've got on some game balls as well, offensive and defensive game balls.
Next, this is Locked on Jayhawks.

Game balls, and then what is next for KU?
Let's start with our offensive game ball.
Trey White had 23 points on 9 of 16.
He hit 5 of 9 from 3, and he had four offensive rebounds, which led KU.
He also had two assists, did have three turnovers,
but that is a very, very strong candidate off the board here.
Melvin counseled 17 points.
He was 8 of 15, so he was efficient in this game.
He also had one offensive rebound.
He had 10 assists compared to his two turnovers.
also very strong candidate in this one.
And then you have Floyd Badoonga, 13 points, perfect 6 of 6,
just dunk in everything.
Gets a couple offensive rebounds.
He had one assist at you turnovers.
Here's my pick, though.
All those guys, great honorable mention picks,
probably a little more so with White and counsel,
but Darren Peterson, man.
This was one of the best flowing, I don't know,
just strong-looking, feeling games for Darren Peterson.
It just felt so smooth.
27 points.
10 of 15 shooting, goes six to seven at the foul line, one of two from three,
get four assists to one turnovers.
And I still cannot emphasize enough how important the four assist to one turnover is for Peterson
and becoming a playmaker for this team.
But the shooting was there.
He just glided through.
He looked so smooth.
He looked so good.
He looked like he was enjoying himself out there.
And yeah, Peterson's our offensive game ball here.
Defensive game ball for KU.
So again, this wasn't the best overall game for KU on the defensive end.
And, you know, Haggerty goes for 21.
McGriff goes for 17.
Nate Johnson goes for 21.
Coastage just continues to, like, bury every three when he's playing against KU.
So there's that happening.
But when you look at some of the KU stats, like Flory had four blocks and two steals,
that's super impactful there, right?
Like, counsel had a steel.
Rosario had a block.
Tiller had a block, and then you get two seals from Peterson.
And you look at it, too, like KU ended up.
about scoring them by 12 points in paint.
But that is interesting because 36 points in paint is a little higher
than you would have expected for K State in this game.
Honestly, like, I almost want to give it to Darren Peterson on the defensive end.
Like, sometimes he just reads the ball so well and gets some really good steals.
We're just going to do this.
We're just going to jump ahead.
The overall game ball for the game goes to Darren Peterson as well.
We're going to give out our senior day ball in game ball of the game, though, too,
because it is senior day.
So this has to be a senior.
And again, you have Trey Wye.
who gets a double double,
23 and 11.
You have Melvin Council
gets a double double
near triple double
with 1710 and 8.
We're going to go with counsel there.
Trey White had a great game,
but yeah,
man, Melvin Counsel,
you just, I don't know,
I'm excited to hear
the senior day speech
in the aftermath here
from what he has to say,
but just felt like he cared so much
all season long for KU.
And that was really cool
to see for a one-year guy
and him come in
and take this so seriously
and really give value to it.
So he'll get our senior ball MVP
and then Peterson gets our overall MVP.
All right, what's next for KU?
Big 12th tournament time.
So, and then after that is Selection Sunday, which is pretty crazy, pretty crazy, right?
That it's already almost here, right?
We're eight days away at this point from the NCAA tournament.
But again, you look at the Big 12th tournament for men's basketball.
So KU was locked into a double-by, right?
They have the tiebreaker and Iowa State.
If Texas Tech loses tonight at BYU, Kansas will become the three-seed,
which would actually be super nice because if you are the four-season,
seed in your Kansas. Guess who you're playing in your first game, Iowa State, right? But if Texas
Tech loses, and then you would end up with KU as the three seed, you would end up with Texas Tech
is the four seed, and Iowa State is the five seed. And then the sixth seed, TCU just beat Cincinnati.
TCU is no pushover. TCU is a good team. They've played even better against better opponents.
We saw TCU almost beat Kansas and Lofield House. Even knowing that, I would rather play TCU than have
to play Iowa State in Kansas City personally. So, you know, I think on your agenda is rooting for BYU,
who has been tanking at the end of this season
to beat Texas Tech that would make things a little easier.
And then they're also set you up that potentially,
you know, instead of having to play Arizona in the semifinal,
not that Houston is much easier,
but obviously we saw recent games against both teams
and one went better than the other versus Houston
and then Arizona, albeit home road splits.
But if KU is the four seed,
so their quarterfinal matchup would come on Thursday
and it would be at 11.30 a.m. central time.
If Kansas does get up to the three-seed,
They would be playing the night game over at the sprint center, 8.30 p.m. Central time on Thursday night.
So a big opportunity, though, because I think this win or avoiding losing more, better put, against Kansas State probably keeps you from falling to a five seed.
And now you're in a situation where, let's say you are in the four seed.
And you play Iowa State in the first round of the big 12 quarterfinals.
That would still be a quad one game, right?
So you're probably not going to fall much on the seed line if you do lose that game.
But you have an opportunity in front of you where if you could win a game like that, maybe even win one more.
maybe you do jump back up to a three seat.
So some opportunities actually in front of KU here
with how loaded the Big 12 is
and how the slate could potentially, you know,
come at them in the Big 12th tournament.
All right, that'll do it for this episode of the show.
