Starting point is 00:00:00 On today's Locked on Jayhawks is the offseason officially done. No more player movement for KU basketball. You are locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. I'm Derek Johnson. Starting point is 00:00:33 And on today's edition of LOJ, we're talking if the KU basketball season is finito. Is it done? Are they done adding players and seeing player movement? And, you know, to this point, or if that is the the answer examining the overhaul that Bill Self has taken with the roster and comparing and contrasting I guess the hype of this offseason compared to where we were with last year's offseason at this time of year first this episode of the show though is brought to you by GameTime download the GameTime app create an account and use code LO LOCKEDONCOllege for $20 off your first purchase. Starting point is 00:01:07 So let's start here. Is the offseason done for KU? Well, it certainly seems like it. It feels like the rumors, the conversation, the adding more players, feels like that has kind of dried up. And I've said this before. I guess I'll say it again. The fact that you still do have an open scholarship does at least allow you to be amenable to, you know, what if there is hypothetically some, and I'm not saying this out there, this is not me like hinting at this, but hypothetically some great player in the class of 2025 is like, you know what? I decided late, I do want to
Starting point is 00:01:39 reclassify, but I really want to go to Kansas. Like you're like, okay, well, I guess we can make that happen now. Or if there's a late bloomer in the international game or something, like you can make that happen if you want. But it feels like to me at this point in time, the intention is for this to be wrapped up. There's going to be no more additions, no more movement to the roster for KU for the upcoming season. And that the roster is set.
Starting point is 00:02:00 It wasn't that what it is, which means you would have 12 scholarship players, which means you would be eating scholarship players which means you would be eating the final scholarship that you owe as part of the NCAA sanctions and then next year and moving forward you would be able to have 13 scholarship players each year now obviously among the 12 scholarship players as far as it goes for who can actually play for Kansas you do only have 11 scholarship players because you know Marco Jackson's going to be out. Also kind of feels like Jamari McDowell might redshirt, so it is kind of crazy that as
Starting point is 00:02:32 much as there's been the conversation about KU being deeper and everything, it does feel like on paper that they are deeper and that they will have more options to stick in the rotation this year. At the same point in time, realistically, you could only have 10 active scholarship players in what you're going for this year, which doesn't sound that much different than where you were a season ago. Obviously, though, this year, you also have, you know, the ability to, I don't know, maybe go into the walk-on group, I don't know, maybe a little bit more in terms of what you would have in case of emergency should it come to that. But, yeah, it is kind of interesting that you're really not that far away
Starting point is 00:03:09 from being where you were last year in terms of the lack of bodies. But, yeah, I think KU's full haul at this point looks like this. It looks like Flory Badunga and Rakees Passmore from the high school ranks, the guys you obviously have returning. And then it looks like Rylan Griffin, AJ Stort, Zeke Mayo, and Shaquille Moore from the portal. Again, Noah Shelby too, if you want to count that. But if we're only talking scholarship guys, that wouldn't count Shelby.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Although maybe having Shelby not on scholarship and maybe he'll be on scholarship the following year, I don't know. Maybe that allows you to feel more comfortable saying, yeah, we only have 12 scholarship players. 11 if you don't count on Marco is going to be out for the year. 10 if we end up red-shirting someone because he becomes like an 11th guy because he was on scholarship at Power 5 and another Division I university before Kansas.
Starting point is 00:03:53 But overall, I mean, if you would have said coming in the offseason, we knew Floyd Badunga and Ricky's pass more were going to be part of the class. At the time, we thought LeBaron Phylon was too. That obviously didn't end up happening. But if you would have said right when Kansas lost their second round game to Gonzaga, that their portal hall was going to include Rylan Griffin, AJ Storr, Zeke Mayo, and Shaquille Moore from the portal.
Starting point is 00:04:15 And when you look at that entire hall, that's four players from NCAA tournament teams, right? In the case of Griffin, that's a player who was starting on a Final Four team. But that's four players who were on NCAA tournament teams. And in the case of Storr was's a player who was starting on a Final Four team, but that's four players who were on NCAA tournament teams. And in the case of Storr was the best player on his tournament team. Mayo was the best player on his tournament team, to where you really would have loved that, I guess, group of additions. You would have taken that when the offseason started, I guess, is the point I'm trying to make here.
Starting point is 00:04:43 They went into the off season needing certain things. And I think they accomplished those at a pretty high level. There were real deficiencies on last year's team. Part of it was the lack of depth. And like I said, there still would be a little bit of a worry that you're another injury away from being that same kind of lack of bodies you were a season ago, but at least on paper right now, it does feel like your sixth and seventh guy maybe even your eighth and ninth guy should they work out this year are going to be better suited
Starting point is 00:05:10 to be a part of the rotation than last year's team now I will fully acknowledge we do do this all the time and I'll get more into this later in the show that you know you always in the offseason mode are looking at the highest potential of every player. But more on that coming up a little bit later. KU went in the offseason knowing that they needed offense, knowing that they needed scoring, knowing that they needed players who could create shots, knowing that they needed players who could hit threes and space the floor for the lineup they were throwing out there.
Starting point is 00:05:39 They finished 59th in the country. And yes, they had real deficiencies on certain things defensively. I talked about that a lot. The ball screen defense and some of the things that they weren't able to do defensively. At the very end of the day, though, they still finished 20th in the country on defense on Ken Palm, which you still want to get better if you want to win a national title. But that still does put you in range to be good enough to win a title. They were 59th on offense.
Starting point is 00:06:03 So that becomes the bigger problem here, right? When you go back and look at the worst offenses in bill's history the 2021 team which that team also got blown out in the second round of the tournament that team was 54th on offense and ken palm adjusted efficiency right and then before that for i i guess the uh the next worst offense that you have to go find you have to go all the way back to 2006. That team was 50th in offense, but that team obviously had a bunch of like freshmen and young players. So you're just getting to know the Bill Self system. And then 2004 was 38th, but this was the worst offense of the Bill Self era by that metric.
Starting point is 00:06:36 You had to get better there. And all those guys check those boxes. Ryland Griffin, knock down three point shooter at high volume and can score in a couple other ways. AJ Stor is a power athlete who puts the ball in the hoop. Zeke Mayo, great scorer, can shoot the ball. Shaquille Moore has posted near double-digit scoring efforts at a Power 5 university, right?
Starting point is 00:06:57 So you completely were able to overhaul that. And I think the beauty of the Shaquille Moore addition was, going back to the talk of the defense defense that was maybe the big question of okay do Griffin store in Mayo is that gonna how much is that gonna help you though on the defensive side of the ball one like I said I think the bigger issue was offense so you approach that first and then you just bank on Bill Self getting you to be a top 30 defense but Shaquille Moore is a really good defender so you added a lot in the portal and now it just becomes about the team gelling, finding the right fits for specific roles and certain players winning out on certain competitions. Where do those biggest competitions lie? Well, I mean, one of them is,
Starting point is 00:07:38 I mean, this isn't really KJ Adams in competition with another player because theoretically, I don't know that KU has another true four on the roster like Zach Clements would be a bit out of position playing the four but maybe he does play some four AJ Storr he could play some four you know do you play Ricky's pass more rather than Griffin there I don't know uh point being though I do think it's interesting that KJ Adams like to me KJ Adams and AJ Storr the two guys you would like actually feel comfortable with playing the four I don't know how many guys like a point guard. It's like, okay, you can play DeJuan. You can play Zeke Mayo. You can play Shaquille Moore.
Starting point is 00:08:07 And it's like worst case scenario. You could throw Jamari McDowell in there to handle the ball. I guess a little bit. I like the center position. It's like, oh, you can play Hunter. You can play Flory. You can play Zach. You can play KJ.
Starting point is 00:08:17 You have like four options that a lot of these other position power forward is not one of them, but does KJ end up starting like, or do you decide to go Hunter Dickinson at the five, AJ Storr at the four, Ryland Griffin at the three, Zeke Mayo at the two, and DeJuan at the one? Maybe that's a little bit more shooting and scoring. I think right now I'd be leaning toward KJ Adams being a starter. Now, I was wondering if they were going to go out and get a guy like Jackson Robinson or one of those players that they were at least a little bit in on late in the transfer portal game. I thought that there was a real possibility KJ could come off the bench. But now given the current roster, I'm expecting KJ to start. But yeah, does does because again, KJ
Starting point is 00:08:53 doesn't play the same position as Zeke Mayo. But are you just so much better with Zeke Mayo on the court that he has to be the fifth starter or that one of these other guys has to be the fifth starter instead of KJ? Again, like I said, I'm leaning toward KJ being that guy. Who wins the backup center spot, right? I mean, is there a chance KJ just wins the backup center spot, and that allows you to play him some minutes there and play more minutes of basically another wing and give you more shooting at the four?
Starting point is 00:09:16 Or does it go to, and I think this is more likely, I don't think Bill Self wants to play KJ Adams at the five. Does it go to Flory? Does it go to Zach? Does it get split up? And how many minutes are there? Is Hunter going to play KJ Adams at the five. Does it go to Flory? Does it go to Zach? Does it get split up? And how many minutes are there? Is Hunter going to play a little less minutes per game so that he can be, have more energy, I guess, to be engaged on the defensive side of the ball, right? Does Hunter get down to 28 minutes per game?
Starting point is 00:09:34 And then if you're giving 12 minutes to the backup center, does eight go to Flory and four go to Zach? Does six go to each? Does, I don't know, nine go to Zach and three go to Flory? Who knows? Does 12 go to one guy, right? Who wins the backup center spot? And then who wins the handful of backup point guard minutes
Starting point is 00:09:49 between Mayo and Moore? I mean, DeJuan could play 30. I think if Elmarco Jackson wasn't hurt, there's a chance DeJuan's minutes could have gone down too, to maybe 30 to 32. But now without him, that's one less ball handler. But even then, even if it's four, five, six, seven, eight minutes, that could be the difference if you're Zeke Mayo and playing 20
Starting point is 00:10:11 minutes a game versus playing 26 minutes a night, right? If you're Shaquille Moore, that could be the difference in playing 10 minutes a night versus playing 20 minutes a night. I don't know. So the backup point guard minutes are going to be important. I think that battle between Moore and Mayo. And then who's the eighth man? If we assume DeJuan Harris, Zeke Mayo, A.J. Griffin, or Ryland Griffin, excuse me, A.J. Storr, K.J. Adams, and Hunter Dickinson are locked into you basically being your top six. And then whoever your backup center is, that's your seventh. Who would be the eighth man? Would you go with another center?
Starting point is 00:10:40 Is it Clements playing some four minutes and five minutes to be the eighth man? Would it be Moore, who we just talked about there? Would it be Rakeese Passmore, who a lot of people are very high on? Is there room for a ninth guy where it could be Passmore and Moore, right? I think it becomes very interesting, some of those competitions, and that's kind of the big storylines now for KU if the roster is indeed set. Let's talk more about the roster overhaul. Statistically, where are some of the biggest areas that they gained, and then the discussion, is this offseason better or about the same or

Starting point is 00:12:28 Last minute tickets, lowest price guaranteed. Continuing on here with Bill Self's roster overhaul. So where are the biggest areas that Kansas gained from where they ended last season to where it feels like they are now on paper? Shot creation would be the first one, obviously. You go back and you look at Zeke Mayo, he can create his own shot. You look at AJ Storpe, he can create his own shot. Now, the two guys create their own shot differently. Zeke Mayo, maybe it's more going to be a jump shot.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Storpe could be a jumper. It could be a power drive to the rim. It feels like Ricky's pass more might even have a little bit of that i think griffin has a little bit of it uh and then kill more even has a little bit of it even though not necessarily as high efficiency as those other guys you look at the shooting they gained a ton of shooting ku was lacking and having enough shooters last year well enter rylan griffin who probably becomes your best three-point shooter on the team um zeke mayo probably have an argument in that he might be the best three-point shooter on the team. Zeke Mayo, probably have an argument in that. He might be the best three-point shooter on the team, right? AJ Storr, if he can get back to his freshman
Starting point is 00:13:29 level efficiency, like that would certainly add a lot there. Athleticism, I don't think they added as much here as they did in the shooting and the shot creation, but they did add athleticism. Like I think Rylan Griffin is a solid athlete. Rakees Passmore, I think is a good athlete. Fleury Badunga, very good athlete. AJ Storr is a power athlete. I think even Shaquille Moore, it gives you a little bit of quickness there. So I think you added a lot there. I think you did add depth. Like I said, there's a chance it could end up being thinner than you might think in terms of the bodies, but on paper, you do feel more secure. Whereas last year it was like, okay, you have for a while, you have four good starters and who else is
Starting point is 00:14:06 going to be there and then eventually furphy became the fifth starter and it was like okay you got five good starters but who else can you trust off the bench or on the team and then kevin gets injured and then it's back down to four right so you're between four to five guys you could trust all year long i don't know that it's going to be that much more this year like there is a chance that it could only be six guys or it could only be seven guys, but that still is a big improvement. And at the end of the day, I think you need at minimum seven. And I think Kansas should be able to get to that point. Like the way I look at it, I mentioned this all the time,
Starting point is 00:14:34 two years ago, the national title team, you basically, your two man bench that you trusted every game, Mitch Lightfoot was going to play the backup center minutes. And then Remy Martin was by the time he was healthy at the end of the season was going to be that trusted backup point guard and then everybody else whether it was kj to come in for a defensive stop here there jaylen coleman lands come in for three here there that was spot minutes that wasn't guaranteed minutes coming into each and every game so i do think you at least have more than last year i would say excitement like that's part of
Starting point is 00:14:59 this too right it's it's entertainment and um i think they became more exciting like flory badunga okay okay first of all what is exciting about basketball dunking the basketball and three It's entertainment, and I think they became more exciting. Like Flory Badunga. Okay, okay. First of all, what is exciting about basketball? Dunking the basketball in three-point shooting is very exciting for a lot of people. Well, we already talked about the three-point shooting you added. I think you added a lot of dunking too. Flory flushes or Badunga dunks, whatever you want to call them.
Starting point is 00:15:20 I think Passmore is going to have some cool dunks over the course of the season. I mean, you added Shaquille Moore. We talked about this earlier. He has like by far the most dunks of any player that's come in to play for Bill Self or has played for Bill Self of a player who's like six foot three or less. So I think you added a lot of excitement. I think this is going to be a fun team.
Starting point is 00:15:37 The one area that maybe had the most question about what they added was probably defense. Like, did they add enough? Like we were talking about earlier, but that latest edition of Shaquille Moore, I think changes that a lot because when you throw out a lineup where DeJuan Harris is playing next to Shaquille Moore, that might be the best defensive lead guard duo in the conference. I say that with a grain of salt because I know that Houston is just going to have one of the best defenses in the country and like Iowa State's going to have one of the best defenses in the country. So I
Starting point is 00:16:08 don't know, maybe that's a little bit too much. There are a lot of great defensive teams and stuff in the Big 12, but it's going to be a very good defensive backcourt when you throw that out there. But keep in mind, Jamal Shedd, who was, for my money, the best defensive player in the country, at least certainly as a perimeter defender. Jamal Shedd's gone. And so LJ Cryer is not known for his defense. Emmanuel Sharp, I think, is a solid defender. But I think there's a chance when you throw that out there,
Starting point is 00:16:34 DeJuan Harrison, Shaquille Moore, that'll be an unbelievable point of attack defense. And maybe it allows Shaquille Moore to play a very big role on this team. Because if you are worried about defending ball screens and having more of a slow-footed center defensively with Hunter Dickinson, we know Hunter adds so much from the offensive perspective and the rebounding perspective. But that certainly would help to have two guards who can just stop the ball from getting in the lane with DeJuan Harris and Shaquille Moore. Probably the one area I now have the biggest question about is honestly rebounding. Like I said, I don't know that the defense is going to be great, but I think it's going to be good enough. And I think the offense has improved
Starting point is 00:17:09 that it's going to be good enough with the offense. The one area I do have that question about is the rebounding because Kansas was not great rebounding last season. They were strong on the defensive glass. They weren't elite, but they were strong at it. They were a bad offensive rebounding team. Zeke Mayo is arguably the best rebounder they added statistically. Now that's in the summit league. So who knows how that translates over and everything to me, that's the area that like KJ Adams can make his biggest leap. That's realistic. Like it's not realistic to expect KJ to all of a sudden be taken three threes a game and shooting 35%. That's not realistic. What is realistic? You're a six foot seven strong athlete who jumps out of the gym who can be aggressive and specifically on this team that's gonna have a bunch of options go impact the game on the glass like we saw a stretch of that last year
Starting point is 00:17:52 but it wasn't consistent and that would help this team a ton hunter's a really good defensive rebounder but you need more offensive rebounding and you know store average under four rebounds per game griffin he's not really a big rebounder. Now, maybe those guys can improve on that based on what their role is at KU compared to their last stops. That's kind of the one question that I have. But statistically, where they gained the most based on last season stats for Kansas and the new transfers that KU brought in. Now, tough to predict carryover for everyone.
Starting point is 00:18:21 And I also am not including the freshmen here because you don't have collegiate stats there. But compared to what KU averages the team, here's areas they, they got markedly better. So Kansas last season averaged 17.3, three point attempts per game. The four transfers they brought in averaged 18.6, three point attempts per game, just those four. So I think Kansas is going to average five to eight, three more attempts from three per game. How about three-point percentage? It wasn't just the volume. KU as a team shot 33.2% from three last year. The four transfers Kansas brought in, 37.2%. That is a drastic difference. And that also opens up the spacing for guys like, I don't know, Hunter Dickinson and DeJuan Harris to maybe shoot a little bit better from three.
Starting point is 00:19:08 I don't know. Or at least get easier twos for like Hunter and KJ and stuff. Free throw percentage. Kansas is a team. 72.1% last year. The four transfers combined, 80.3%. That is a huge jump. And turnover rate too.
Starting point is 00:19:24 Kansas is a team team 16.5%. The four transfers, 15.8% was average. And three of KU's new four are at or below that mark. So they got a little bit better in not turning the ball over. And then the last one here is steal rate. If you go based off his previous three seasons, not last year, Shaquille Moore would have by far led Kansas in steal rate last season. Instead, Moore last year was at 2.1%. Now again, the years before Shaquille Moore was at
Starting point is 00:19:53 3.9%, 3.4%, 4.4%. Marco Jackson led Kansas last year, 2.5%. So you improve the steal rate with that and some athletic players that you added. And I think having more offensive options means Juan Harris should get back to more of his, I guess, 2023 numbers defensively where that's going to help as well. Let's finish up here. Is this offseason better on paper than last year with Locked on Jayhawks? Finishing this episode of Locked on Jayhawks discussing, is this offseason better, worse, or the same than last offseason on paper for KU basketball? I think it's really easy to say yes to this, knowing that we saw what happened, that we saw that Kansas ended up being a four seed that lost in the second round, which didn't quite live up to the expectations of being the preseason number one team. So it's easy to see that and be like, well, yeah, they didn't live up to expectations. So of course this one's better
Starting point is 00:20:47 because this one is the unknown and has potential to far exceed that. But if you can just fast forward your mind a little bit and go back to where we were at this point in time in 2023, I don't know. That offseason at that point in time, it was thought to be pretty bonkers and pretty good. But still, if you compared it to this one, I think you still could argue this one. Dickinson had bigger hype than what A.J. Storr is coming into the program. So I do think Storr is going to be really good this year. And you could also argue that just in general, Wings have an opportunity to impact the game at another level than than big men but I don't know maybe that's a little more moot in college basketball than like
Starting point is 00:21:30 the NBA for instance but yeah I mean if you're comparing the Dickinson hype when you landed him in 2023 to the store hype for this year the Dickinson hype gets the check mark there in the offseason I would say Zeke Mayo is a bigger get. And again, this is me viewing this from the lens of when it was the offseason, not based on what we saw happen. But I think Zeke Mayo, even knowing that, better get than Nick Timberlake. Timberlake was obviously a really good scorer at Towson, and both were from smaller schools putting up big numbers, but they were very different how they went about it.
Starting point is 00:22:03 Zeke Mayo did it, I think, even longer with more efficiency and was on a winning team. Like he went to the NCAA tournament twice. Timberlake never went to the tournament. Zeke Mayo was creating a lot of his own shots. That wasn't always the case for Nick Timberlake. Mayo at least has been like an average below average defender. Timberlake was like a very bad defender. Timberlake, you know, I guess all conference-ish level guy Zeke Mayo, conference player of the year There's a lot more gravity and creation to the game of Zeke Mayo I don't think it's close, the Mayo hype
Starting point is 00:22:33 So that would be a check for this offseason Shaquille Moore versus Artario Morris That one, obviously you got nothing from Artario Morris So just on paper, if you have Shaquille Moore play That's a check to this one but if you're just talking about in the off season of what the expectations would be for what arterial morris was supposed to provide for last year's team to what shaquille moore would was is supposed to provide for this year's team i guess that would actually be probably a check for morris then you
Starting point is 00:22:59 have rylan griffin versus johnny furphy i would say give me griffin at that point i know furphy is going to go in the first round of the draft. Like Furphy has the higher future basketball potential and NBA potential. But if you're talking a true freshman, Johnny Furphy, or a third year Rylan Griffin, just for the sake of college basketball, I think Griffin, you have the expectations to have the better season there. And then, so that'd be another check for this one. So now you're two to two.
Starting point is 00:23:23 Flory Badunga versus Elmarco Jackson, obviously a very different position. So it makes it tough to fully look at this. But both of these are McDonald's All-Americans that you brought in. Flory's actually ranked higher recruiting-wise. But also because you have Hunter Dickinson, the cap on what Flory plays in terms of minutes per game is lower than what Elmarco Jackson played or was expected to play as a freshman at KU. So if it's based on minutes per game, you'd give the check to El Marco. If it's based on who's expected to just be better coming in, I think you would go Flory based on, you know,
Starting point is 00:23:57 Flory's like the number one center, right? So that would be a check for this one. So it's three to two. Rakees Passmore versus Jamari McDowell. like jamari mcdowell but this feels like an easy rakees passmore pick there and a check so that'd be four to two uh how about i threw this one in there return of zach clements coming off the red shirt because it's basically like you added him to this year's team after not having him to play last year versus parker brown um you could make the argument that if clements was so much better why didn't they just pull the red shirt and, you know, play him over Parker Brown last year? But there's so many reasons they wouldn't have done that. Like Parker Brown was going into his last year.
Starting point is 00:24:33 And if it was a negligible difference, like you don't do it. Clements is in year four as a former top 50 recruit. Like he is the answer there. He gets the checkmark there. So what do we have? Five to two now in favor of this offseason so that means i i give this one five of the seven checks or if you did want to call the el marco floor you want to push then it's four to two to one so i actually think even in going to last year and looking it through that scope of how hyped it was last offseason i still
Starting point is 00:24:59 think this one is better on paper but what i think will wind up making this one better in result too, as opposed to just the hype and on paper, it's more of a modern and fitting collection of talent. And it does have like way more scoring. It has way more three-point shooting. It has way more way to impact the game and fit the rest of roster around them. And way more thought of like roster construction than just adding talent than I think the one before. That'll do it for this episode of Locked on Jayhawks.
