Starting point is 00:00:00 The transfer portal opens up on Friday. How's it looking for KU between their losses, their gains and what they need to add in this very quick, chaotic upcoming window? You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:28 What's going on? I'm Derek Johnson here. This is Locked on Jayhawks. Thanks for making it your first listen every day. And thank you every day. We're catching each and every episode of the show, as well as making it the number one sports podcast network here with the locked on podcast network. On today's edition of the show, we're going to be breaking down the transfer portal for KU with it opening up on Friday here. We're going to be talking about the losses so far. We're going to be talking about the additions that KU has made so far or offers that they've made so far as well as what they need to add, what should be on the short list, the wish list for KU coming up over this next couple weeks of action. Today's episode of the show is brought to you by Fandual. Before tip off, check the Fandual app and see what's dropping during NBA happy hour every
Starting point is 00:01:10 Friday from 6 to 7.30 p.m. Eastern time with Fandul. All right. So things open up on Friday. This is your transfer portal primer for KU football. And basically we've seen guys be entering into the portal for KU and other schools across the country. And to be clear, to this point, it is allowed to be able to, you know, bring on non-D-1 kids. That's why you've seen Kansas be able to, you know, have offers out there or have commitments from kids who are coming from the FCS or D2 level or whatever.
Starting point is 00:01:43 But it's not the case coming from the FBS level here where they've been able to enter, but they have not been able to commit. What will be interesting is kind of like if you pay attention to like NBA free agency, for instance, like NBA free agency opens up on whatever it is. I figured if it's July 1st or whatever, and it's like, players will sign, it opens up at like midnight or whatever. Players will sign like within the minute. And it's like, oh, so you had, you had such a good conversation over that minute free agency's been open that you decided to sign with them. What a great visit. And, you know, you were able to do everything so quickly and being able to do that. No, we know there are talks with agents and back channels that are going on between coaches all across the country and players, right?
Starting point is 00:02:25 And so there's going to be visits. It's going to be wild and quick. there's going to be certain people who probably commit without ever even visiting if the money's right and they've heard the right things like for some people it just kind of depends on what you're valuing for where you're going to go but this is going to be a wild situation like could kansas get two commits on the first day absolutely could kansas get zero commits on the first day and then get two over the first week like you don't know what's going to happen this is going to be pretty crazy um with all this now losses so far for k u to this point in time at least a time of
Starting point is 00:02:56 recording here because this is like an ever-changing number, obviously, that any minute could add one or two people or something like that. But to this point in time, Kansas' most recent loss of Jacoby Davis brings their number of lost players up to 17 at this point in time. And we've kind of talked about throughout the portal season in different episodes, thank you that were days if you've already caught them, about how for KU, you know, typically they're losing around 15 people on a given year in the outgoing. in class though if you're just looking at scholarship players that number goes down a little bit and of the 17 they've lost this year I believe 16 were on scholarships and the number of scholarship
Starting point is 00:03:36 players a little higher that said if you're looking at the players who were projected beyond the two deep it's not necessarily a thick list for KU it'll be interesting though like will it end there right are we going to see more players enter the portal for KU as we hit closer to the portal opening up here any any hour now that like okay is is things get closer to opening up and the amount of players that are in the portal start to finalize a little more, does it increase the likelihood that somebody who hasn't entered the portal on Kansas or another school across the country gets tampered with more because there's a coach out there like, hey, I don't know, better than some of the whatever position is out there
Starting point is 00:04:15 right now. Would you be interested in entering the portal? We've got this check we could write you or whatever it is, right? What happens if over the course of the portal season, KU adds a couple players at a position does all of a sudden you get a do you get kind of a domino effect right like somebody else decides the leave because of that and then you're stuck scrambling not just with the players you had to add but now you have to replace somebody else you just lost and it becomes even more difficult there i did want to as part of this though to kind of go over with kew's losses so real quickly just mentioning some of them jacobby davis andre gibson those are both corners In the case of Davis, he and Jamil Croft, who Croft is also in the portal for KU, were both players that were the top two highest rated recruits in KU's class.
Starting point is 00:05:02 I think it was the class of 2023. Obviously, that didn't pan out for KU, but I don't know what you look at there. Is that a failure in scouting and development or I don't know, just other guys were better? Who knows necessarily there? Caleb Red, who just transferred in last year, he's back in the portal. Terry Stewart, the running back, who I would think would have been in line for at least some carries this year. David McComb, who would have been in the thick of things in the quarterback race with Isaiah Marshall and Cole Ballard. Kenne-N-N-Nay, one of the offensive line recruits from a couple years ago, Lake Juan Robinson, who just came in as a former Juco guy and Auburn player.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Graydon Grimes, who I think a lot of people thought that was going to happen last year after his dad left on the offensive line. Logan Brantley, a linebacker, John John Camaro, that's a big loss, long-term lyric Rawls. was a starter for you at the back end, Jaden Ham as a tight end, Jacori Stewart and linebacker Johnny Thompson at running back, and then Bryce Cohun at receiver. Which of those do we need to be worried about, though, right? I mean, I guess you can never totally tell, like, are any of these players going to break out at their certain school? Could they break out in 2026 or 2027, right? Tough to say right away, but off what I'm looking at right now, here are the top five losses for KU. And to be completely honest, like, after I got to five,
Starting point is 00:06:19 I don't want to disparage the guys that you've lost, but it's doable losses, players that you have a chance to upgrade over in the portal. And a lot of the guys I'm about to mention here in this top five losses are guys you might have a chance to upgrade over for 2026 production in the portal as well. But the reason they could be big losses isn't just because of their potential in 2026. It's because of their long term potential. Now, you could have a real argument with today's day and age of college football. And with the transfer portal, are you just better off like, Are you better off saying, you know, screw it with the high school? If we can get high-end three-star, low-end four-star,
Starting point is 00:06:55 or a kid we really like is a diamond in the rough, you take them. But, and to be clear, like Lance Leipold hasn't been bringing in classes of 25 kids. They've been bringing in high school recruiting classes of 12, 15, 18 kids in a class. So they are kind of leaning more on the portal game. And when you look at KU's successes in 2022 and 2023, making back-to-back bowl games, those rosters were, it was built on a combination of like less miles guys and good solid transfer portal additions.
Starting point is 00:07:25 I mean, shoot, you think about some of the NFL guys, KU has. Dom Poonie, Austin Booker, those are transfer portal guys for KU. So there is the chance to kind of do that. But top five losses here. Number five is Damani Maxin for me. It was an 88 rare star in high school. There were people comparing him to Mike Lee. And we just never really got to see him on the field.
Starting point is 00:07:46 Is that because it just wasn't a hit. for KU. They did have kind of an older safety room these last couple of years. I don't know if he would have been on the two deep this next year. I mean, with the way it looks now, he would be, but it's just impossible to know, you know, would he end up on the two deep after whatever happens for KU during this portal period and stuff? But to lose somebody who was thought of as one of your higher rated recruits, that's a hard hitting safety, I don't know. I would have liked to continue to develop it at KU. Number four is Harry Stewart, also an 88 rated three star, which Again, those are your higher rated three stars.
Starting point is 00:08:20 He had over 3,000 rushing yards in high school. He was their third string this past season, and their top two graduated. And obviously we know, Kansas is probably going to add a running back in the transfer portal. So there's no guarantee that you would just automatically say, oh, I was the third string. Top two guys are gone. And now I'm the first string. It's not like it was 10 years ago or 15 years ago.
Starting point is 00:08:38 But I at least thought that Harry Stewart was going to, you know, be in a line for real carries this next season. And I kind of liked his game from what we saw in a limited sample size. And I liked his game in high school. So I think that one hurts a little bit, maybe more in the long term. But I do think he would have had at least a little role on this team. Number three is Lyric Rawls. A lot of production over 70 tackles, seven past deflections and interception.
Starting point is 00:09:03 He did struggle a bit in past coverage and he struggled down the stretch. But even if you factor in like the fact that, you know, there were some struggles there and that this does allow Taylor Davis to kind of move back to his more natural position as opposed to having two guys kind of at the same position and one having to play out of position. And even if you do factor in some of the warts, like this is still a player who basically graded out like basically like a middle of the pack safety in the big 12. And yes, there were certain issues there.
Starting point is 00:09:34 But there's no guarantee you're going to get a above average player. Like you might just get a below average player to start there out of the portal. Who knows with finances and everybody you're competing. Yes. Number two is John Kamara. I think, I mean, freak athlete. The fact that he even played over 200 snaps as a redshirt freshman, really impressive. Part of that was injury related for KU. But I thought he had a chance to be a future star for KU. And he might have been a backup, might have been the first linebacker off the bench, which still plays a bit in 2026, but certainly would have been thought of as a starter in 27. And there still is a chance he would have started in 26. That one certainly hurts. And then the biggest one here I have is David McComb. Again, a lot of these guys on the list is projection. And you don't totally know, like, I remember thinking Ethan Vasco was going to be a solid player for KU. And Vasco just had a season at Liberty where he had more interceptions than touchdown. So who knows? Maybe McComb goes down that path. But McComb, certainly a higher rated high school kid than Vasco was.
Starting point is 00:10:32 This is somebody, though, who wasn't just thought of as a potential future star for KU a quarterback, but could have won the job in 2026. Like you talked to some people and they would tell you that he was their favorite quarterback, of of the group that KU had. So that one hurts both this year and potentially long term. I don't know, maybe KU can make amends in the portal somehow, but those are the top five losses so far. So what is KU added in the portal?
Starting point is 00:10:57 Who have they offered? And reasons why you haven't seen some of those D1 offers just yet. Plus we get into the needs list for KU next. It's Jibril Conday, who will be a redshirt junior in 2026. He's a six foot five, two hundred and ninety pound defensive tackle. He's somebody who we know KU likes to be versatile, flexible with playing, you know, three down linemen or four down linemen with this new D.K. McDonald defense. He's somebody
Starting point is 00:13:08 who will be able to play either as a 4-3 defensive tackle or a three-down defensive lineman is kind of the defensive end is the third defensive tackle, so to speak, the guy furthest outside, though he's still kind of inside the tackle. But he's 30 tackles, six and a half TFLs, two and a half sacks last year at Grand Valley State. That is a D-2 program. His high school coach actually reached out to me and had some really awesome tidbits. He said he's versatile enough to play five tax. three and even nose in sub passing downs.
Starting point is 00:13:42 So that's kind of what just kind of talking about there, playing those different gaps for KU if they need them to more on the outside or the inside, the being able to play nose and the sub the passing downs, right? If KU wants to throw out a lineup where it's just, okay, you have Blake Herald and Leroy Harris and, you know, Konday or whoever as the pass rushing guys. And then he also mentioned very technically sound against the run. Wasn't always as big in high school. He's, you know, added some weight since that.
Starting point is 00:14:09 So his foundation was learning great technique to win his gap. That's what you want to hear, kind of a late bloomer physically, right? I think he was like 6-4-230 was his listing on his high school recruiting profile. So, you know, adding a bunch of weight. He didn't have that as much in high school, so he had to win with technique. He also mentioned bra as a pass rusher, but huge upside. A good defensive line and pass rush coach will love working with him. Can collapse pockets from the interior, bat down passes with his length.
Starting point is 00:14:35 Some of the KU defense alignment have done a good job. at that. A good defensive line pass horse coach will love working with him. Well, that sounds right up KU's alley. Think about it. They moved Kyron Johnson from playing, he played like a linebacker and safety throughout his time at KU. They moved him to defensive end. He got turned into a six-run draft pick. I would say KU did a pretty good job of coaching him up to play that position over kind of a one-year notice, right? You think of Austin Booker. Doesn't really play at Minnesota. It comes over to Kansas, and he's a pro right away. A lot of that is on these players who are freak athletes, but the coaching put them in some good positions to do some of these
Starting point is 00:15:09 things as well. And then there is an offer out, at least that I've seen on Twitter, X, whatever. Luke Deneke, he is a tight end, also from the D2 level, Minnesota, Duluth. He's also posted offers from all sorts of schools over there, Iowa State, Virginia Tech, Minnesota, some others. But he really big receiving numbers for the tight ends, about 61 catches for 1119 yards and 14 touchdowns. And that was as a redshirt freshman.
Starting point is 00:15:34 So you could possibly get this kid as a red shirt sophomore. He was an All-American at D-2, and obviously there would be a jump-up in competition, and he would be looking to add weight. He, you know, weight-wise is more like a bigger receiver at the D-1 level. But, you know, you know what Carson Brune is as a blocking tight end. It's pretty good. The question's going to be with Brun, what can he add as a receiving tight end? Well, if you add a player like Denneke, you get your receiving tight end to pair with your blocking
Starting point is 00:16:01 tight end like Brune. We'll see if they can land him. Obviously, he's Minnesota Duluth, like maybe Minnesota's the way to go. But if Kansas can land him, I think that would be a really, really nice kind of under the radar addition. And KU's done well with some of these players coming up from, you know, FCS, D2 levels over the years here. Now, the reason you haven't seen any, like you would think, oh, why aren't there a bunch of like offers being posted from KU for other players? Why not D1 kids? Well, again, portal officially opens here on January 2nd on Friday.
Starting point is 00:16:33 And so what that means is if you're a player who's in the portal and you post on December 31st and you post, hey, this school offered me, it's technically tampering or it's not allowed, then you wouldn't be probably able to go to that school. I don't know what the NCAA would do. Who knows? They're kind of sitting on their hands with everything right now, but that's why. So it's going to be crazy because this isn't going to be like, you know, this past basketball off season. It was a long grind. It was a slow burn, right? We were constantly looking for rumors.
Starting point is 00:17:03 offers the latest tidbit or story that would come out every now and then with basketball. And the offseason lasted like three months for KU basketball. That's not going to be what this is for KU football. It's going to be like, oh, the first day, floodgates are open, offers abound, you know, visits abound, commitments abound for Kansas and other schools. So it'll be a little bit different there, which will have its plus and minuses. You're going to have a better idea of what your team's actually going to be for spring football, which that'll be nice.
Starting point is 00:17:29 but I don't know man I feel bad for the for the coaches like wives and significant others and families and stuff because yeah they're probably not going to see them too often over these next couple of weeks let's finish up your what are KU's biggest needs where do they need to make some traction in the transfer portal today's episode of the show is brought to you by game time you'll be able to get tickets for the next KU football season and there's nothing like that college football season also nothing like that that college basketball season that we're kind of right in the middle of right now. The packed stadium is being right there in the middle of it, all the energy, the bands, the cheerleaders, the moments you remember forever, maybe that big buzzer beater. But actually getting tickets, that part can be frustrating, right? Well, long queues, logins, price jumps at checkouts. That's why game time gives the advantage back to the fans. It's the easiest way to unlock amazing college basketball or college football tickets and experiences in just a few taps.
Starting point is 00:18:24 The zone deals are really cool too, right? Like maybe you're going to a stadium like Islandfield house where you know everywhere you sit is going to be a good seat. And you're just like, I don't really care where I see it sit. I just want a good deal. Well, with the zone deal, you pick the section, game time picks the seats and you save even more money, right? Plus, you know all the prices up front makes the whole process stress fee free and a lot simpler. Take the guess we're going to buying college basketball tickets with game time. Download the game time app, create an account and use code locked on college for $20 off at first purchase.
Starting point is 00:18:54 Terms apply. Again, that's code Lockedon College, L-O-C-E-O-N-C-O-L-E-G-E-E-E-G-E for $20 off. Download the GameTime app today. Thanks, you have for joining us here. Don't forget check out the Everydayer Club, and thanks for joining us on Lockdown Jayhawks, anywhere you get your podcast as well. Okay, so what are some of the biggest needs for KU football
Starting point is 00:19:15 as we approach the portal? I have this split up into different areas. Stud needs, Stard, and depth needs. Depth needs are guys you need bodies. you need guys who can come in and be backups. And just because you're a backup doesn't mean you don't play. There are certain positions where, you know, you need a lot of depth because those guys are going to play, right?
Starting point is 00:19:34 So the level of player you're looking to get for depth is a little different here or there. Some positions, the depth you want is going to be more players that have multiple years so that you can develop them into a starter in the future, right? Then you have your starter needs, players that you need to get somebody who is good enough to start. And then I have the stud needs, which is like, kind of think who would have been KUs. See, I wish this stuff was publicized. At least in the NFL and the NBA, you get like, I signed this contract with so-and-so just to give you an idea of like what you have to spend
Starting point is 00:20:03 and trying to figure out like, okay, what moves could still be had and stuff like that. Like, that is kind of the fun of some of the pro-off seasons. You don't get that in college because you are kind of operating with a question mark of how much money. And it is a moving target because any donor at any point could get a big NIL deal. But I would think like off the top of my head, like Bengali Camaro was probably a pretty big portal spend for KU. I don't know, Justice Finkelie probably. was. Trey Lathen probably was like gone on and on and on. Anyway, point being if I like what is classified as a stud paying toward probably the higher dollar amount among teams, Kansas is not in a
Starting point is 00:20:42 position where they can do that as much as other schools. Like a Texas tech, they might be able to bring in seven studs, right? Kansas might have to pick and choose and be like, we can only bring them one or two. And that's, That's kind of the difference with some of the money stuff there. So I think one of them to me is running back. Go get a stud at running back. I think the best path forward for this Kansas team this year is to be a ground and pound run first team. Cole Ballard's is a solid runner.
Starting point is 00:21:08 Isaiah Marshall is a really explosive runner. I want to see them steer into that kind of triple option running attack that we saw them really use a lot in 2022. I think you need to stud running back to kind of take it to the next level. So I would like to see them spend top dollar for one of these guys. If you do have enough to bring in another stud, if that's it, then that's it. I would say you look at one of these four positions. And maybe you have enough to bring in two more and then it's two of the four, whatever. Offensive tackle, which I guess you would lean toward right tackle with Calvin Clements coming back.
Starting point is 00:21:39 And then or one of like strong side defensive end, cornerback or safety. You lose Enrique Cruz at right tackle. If you want to be a ground and pound type team, why not beef up the offense line as much as possible? Now, if you want to flip to the defense side, you could say, okay, well, corner like your top four or five corners are coming back this year at least as of right now again anything can change in any moment um the problem was ku's secondary struggle and this applies for safety too where like i guess it's a little different safety because you lost lyric wrongs but like a corner jalen todd austin alexander those are starters for you side gives logs starts jaleal hurley got some
Starting point is 00:22:11 playing time as the season went on you look at safety mason ellis was a starter it's kind of the third safety taylor davis was a starter for you so you have a lot of players back but you struggle a lot there. So I think it would help if you upgraded, if you added a stud DB, because then it just makes everybody else job easier, right? If everybody's assignment becomes, okay, there's somebody now that we brought in who's really good, they'll take the stud and we'll take the next best player, it makes everybody else's job easier, right? Or if you bring in a stud and it helps you lock down one side of the field, you can put extra, you know, extra coverage or zones on the other side of the field. So I think that would make sense. The strong side defensive end, Alex Bray, I think is a serviceable
Starting point is 00:22:51 player he's solid um but if you can find somebody who's like also bringing you because bray didn't really bring much pass rush if you can find somebody who's a disruptor as well that's where it becomes interesting so again you're not going to have money to do all three of those defensive positions and running back and offensive tackle maybe you can only pick one or two but those would be ones that i'd be looking at if you do have money to make one or two stud additions now beyond that the starter needs if you don't bring in a stud running back or offensive tackle or strong side or corner safety. You could probably use a starter at any and every of those positions just to try to, you know, like I said, kind of improve it overall. I think beyond that, you need another receiver.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Cam Pickett, feel good about that in the slot. Keaton, Quebec, I feel good enough. As a redshirt junior, if you wanted to bring in two starters, you could. To me, if I want to be more of a run-first team, I'd rather spend my money because that's part of it. You have limited resources. Ideally, you bring in everything that's the best, but if you're limiting your resources, do you play money ball a little more at receiver to say we're going to spend more to beef up the run game and the defense? I think that would make sense to me, but you at very least need to add, you don't want solid receiver to start there.
Starting point is 00:24:02 You could argue tight end. Like I said, I like Carson Bruin, but it would put less pressure on him coming off the injury. We know KU likes to play two and three tight end sets. And especially again, going back, if you want to be more of a run first team, you're going to play more tight ends. So especially with Broome being a good blocker, if you can find a good pass catching tight end, I think that would be solid, especially for a young quarterback. You want to have that reliable target over the middle of the field.
Starting point is 00:24:24 You need a starting kicker and punter. Just kind of obvious there, both guys graduate. Like I said, some of those positions in the stud column. And then I guess this kind of comes down to what they want to do, like figure out what you want to do with that third safety role. I know they used to call it the hawk. I don't think they did this year with D.K. McDonald, but it's basically the same idea. Basically, your linebacker safety hybrid. is that going to continue to be Mason Ellis, or are you going to move Ellis to one of the other safety spots?
Starting point is 00:24:49 Are you going to use more of a nickel corner, like a Saeed Gibbs? Is it somebody you already have on the roster, or is it somebody you're going to try to find in the portal who is going to fit into that specific role? Do you feel good about a freshman playing like Josh Galbraith, who is a really good athlete and can provide some stuff there? So I think that'll be interesting what they decide to do there, but that's a possible starter ad for KU. And then depth needs, quarterback would be one you need, I mean, you have three scholarship quarterbacks, Cole Ballard, Isaiah Marshall, and Jalen Mason. And as far as the depth needs, again, this could be somebody you would just bring in who, like a quarterback, a lot of times you might see a guy go somewhere to be the backup where he can,
Starting point is 00:25:29 it's basically like a, hey, I'll come here, be the backup. And then I'm going to be a graduate assistant next year and work my way into coaching. You see that sometimes. So maybe that would be a right situation for KU. I guess if a really good quarterback wanted to come to you and it was for a fair price, the thing is they're going to be so expensive. So it probably doesn't make sense. But yeah, that's probably more of a depth ad.
Starting point is 00:25:53 Even if you add a stud running back, you probably need another depth ad that as well. You probably just need another body in there. And again, maybe it's a young guy. Receiver starter and a depth guy or two starters. Offensive line, you're probably looking at, I think more on the interior for me. but that's also based on adding a stud, you know, starting tackle. If you don't add a stud starting tackle, then you're going to need another tackle there as well.
Starting point is 00:26:17 And then you definitely need depth of defensive tackle, right? Like, I feel good about guys like Harold, Marcus Calvin. We talked about Jibril Condé. I think cheese Hammond, I don't know, is he going to be ready to go as a retro freshman? Is he going to need another year of seasoning? That'll be interesting. But you need another probably two bodies in there.
Starting point is 00:26:35 We know KU likes to rotate their depth at defensive tackle. They could use some more depth there. And then the last one is linebacker. This has been thinned out a bit. Bengali Kamara graduates. Jason Gilliam graduates. Logan Prantley transfers away. John Junk Mara transfers away.
Starting point is 00:26:49 Even though I feel good about the two starters, Trey Lathan and Joseph Sip, even though I feel good about the future of some of the young guys, Malachi Kirby and Joseph Credit, you want somebody who can be a trustworthy third linebacker. We saw KU's linebackers get beat up with injury this year. We saw Sip missed the season. Get a trustworthy third linebacker.
Starting point is 00:27:08 You feel like you can rotate. in for those guys in case of injury or just throughout the season or throughout a game when they're tired and you need to get somebody else reps.
