Deshawn good is good at basketball.
No more dumb puns the rest of the show.
No promises actually.
But I am actually kind of in love with this dude as a transfer portal target.
We'll get into why.
You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks.
Part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What's going on?
Derek Johnson here with another episode of Locked on Jayhawks.
It's making it your first listen every day.
On today's episode, we're getting into our.
our transfer portal deep dive breakdowns of potential targets for KU with the Sean Good.
We'll get into his potential fit with the team.
We'll get into his strengths and weaknesses as well as just some information.
And if for me it would be a take or not on this episode of the show.
Let's get started right there.
And obviously, this becomes a little bit more complicated with not currently knowing who's going to be the coach for Kansas.
You know, as right now, I assume it's going to be Bill Sond.
but you don't know that for sure.
He could easily retire.
And so that kind of changes things up here.
So I'm just going to try to evaluate the player as best I can.
And for what KU currently has, but know some of those things can kind of change and
adjust based on who would be the coach, who's coming back, who's leaving, and all those
sorts of things.
And by the way, shout out to B. Shark 5 on Twitter, who recommended this one.
You can hit me up with anybody you want to deep dive on, and I'll try to get to it at
some point here during the off season.
And we've got more to come this week and next week and on and on.
So Deshawn Good is a 6'8, 230 pound forward.
He won back-to-back state titles in West Virginia,
goes to IU Indy, which was like a new D-1 school
that was like a merge of a couple schools.
Kind of weird thing there.
He was Horizon All-Freshman team.
He put up about 8 and 6 per game, 23 minutes per game.
And then he goes to Robert Morris this past season.
Team in the same league, and he puts up incredible numbers.
Over 15 points, nearly nine rebounds per game.
he shoots 63% from the floor, 36 of 63 on three-point shots.
That is above 50%.
He was also 76% at the foul line.
He was named to the Horizon League all first team.
And better yet, he was named the Horizon League player of the year.
So you're already seen a couple things you like there.
One, player who won the player of the year in his conference,
two, the improvement from year one where he was a solid player to a star player in that
league in year two tells you that he has been on this kind of incline.
and the hope would be that he stays on that incline for this next season, right?
And Robert Morris was pretty good.
They were second in the league.
They were decent mid-major.
Like, they were top 150 on Ken Palm, which I know doesn't sound like much when you're
comparing it to like Power 4 schools.
But for mid-majors, if you're top 150 on Ken Palm, that means you're kind of in the
who's who of some of the lower majors, so to speak, right?
And honestly, like, even though he's playing against lesser competition, there's another
way to view at the flip side, which is almost grading in a lot of the,
on a positive curve, Robert Morris is a 325th in the country in adjusted tempo rating.
So that's a team who's playing very slow and he still put up really good numbers.
Right now all of a sudden, if you're getting up to a faster tempo team, what does that do to the numbers?
Or even a mid tempo team, kind of like Kansas, does that boost some of the opportunities in the numbers there?
Now, if you're wondering, how do players from this league, you know, transfer up?
It just kind of depends on the case.
I will say this.
There was a transfer from Robert Morris, who was another big.
man, Alvaro Fulgaris, who is the, you might recognize that name, even though I
butchered it, as the kid for Iowa who just hit the game winning three against Florida.
He's more of a center and good is more of like a power forward, but he translated well to
Iowa.
He had a solid year, eight and a half points per game, role player, and obviously made that
game winning three against Florida.
So he transferred up and had success this year.
Now, if you're expecting good to transfer up and be a star player, I don't know that that's
where I'm at. But can he transfer up and be a starter? Can he transfer up and be a contributing player?
Yes. I absolutely believe some of those things. And again, he's more of a four,
Fulgaris, more of a five. The good did play some minutes at the five, which I do like from the
standpoint of, I don't know how much you would do if you're coming to Kansas specifically,
but like it gives you more flexibility, especially for a Kansas team that didn't have a lot of options
to play at the five. It's like if Florian Tiller were in foul trouble, you had Mbia and that was
about it to play at the big miss spot. But this dude is a analytic darling, which, you know,
I am somebody who loves my numbers. And you know that if you're listening or watching the show.
And so this guy is going to tickle my fancy, so to speak. That sounded really weird. I apologize
for that. But you're talking 94th percentile in RAPM, which is like one of those box score plus
minus how you do plus stats like when you're on the floor when you're not yada yada very good he was
in the 98th percentile in win shares okay he was in the 98th percentile in PER is basically
measurement of your efficiency he was in the 99th percentile in wins above replacement player
that is an incredible profile and then if you're looking at the on-off ratings just to you know
stick one more dagger uh in my heart here for for my love for this guy he was he was
was in the 99th percentile in on-off O rating.
So about as good as the country when he was on the floor making an impact on offense.
He might be thinking, okay, so his offense is good, his defense, but 89th percentile in on-off
derating for the team.
So, yeah, the offense was even a little bit better, but like they were actually better
defensively with him out there too.
Now, how that translates up, we'll get to that in a second here.
But the team overall was almost 27 points better.
per 100 possessions when he was on the floor.
That is kind of like what Flory Bedunga did this year for Kansas.
And obviously, when you're talking about playing at Robert Morris,
the drop off from having the Horizon League Player of the Year to whatever their backup was to him is probably pretty stark.
So it's going to boost some of those numbers.
But it's still extremely impressive to be that much better when he is on the floor for them as a team.
to me, the simple answer here, the simple, you know, bottom line, I guess, is this is a take.
This is something somebody that I would want on my basketball team.
I want efficient basketball players.
I want basketball players who can produce.
The question is kind of just more so, what do you view the role to be in taking him?
And obviously, as we do these player deep dives, the cost question becomes something that I don't have the information.
on. I don't know how much Deshaun Good wants in the portal. I don't know if that fits into KU's budget or not. And that is a very, very, very big missing piece that I don't have because in today's day and age of the portal, it isn't just about what player you want most. You're also shopping for prices, you know, like you have a certain budget you have to fit into. So you might like somebody at one price. You might like somebody better than another player. But if he's asking for double a price, you might take the guy who's asking for half the amounts.
can spend more in another position.
So that's the piece of the puzzle here that I don't exactly have.
I also don't have the piece of the puzzle of what is the desired role.
Does he want to go somewhere and be a star?
You know, of which case he's probably looking at transferring up to maybe a bigger mid-major
or a smaller power five.
Or does he want to go somewhere that he can play at a big school and have a chance to do
big things, but he has an understanding that, you know, maybe he'll be the fourth guy.
But he still has another year.
He has two years to where he could be like, okay, I'll be the fourth or fifth guy that year and then move my way up potentially if I play well.
And that kind of goes into the question here of Kansas as well.
Do you view him more as somebody who can start next to Flory Bedunga, assuming you were to get Flory back?
Or do you view him more as a third big where it's like you have your two starting bigs?
You can bring him off the bench as a four or a five and get some offensive production.
I think part of the strengths and weaknesses will help highlight where we.
come to that. So we'll get to that on the other side. I'm Clea Butler, host of Lockdown Women's
Basketball, and this is Mazda's Women's Basketball Snapshot, celebrating the work no highlight reel
can ever capture. All four number one seeds, Yukon, UCLA, Texas, and South Carolina have completely
dominated the opening rounds of the NCAA tournament. Yukon rolled with a 98 to 45 victory over
Syracuse behind Aze Fudd, who had a 34-point explosion, while South Carolina has been led by
Joyce Edwards coming up a 23-point game. UCLA leaned on Lauren Batch with a 35-point performance
in an 87-68 win over Oklahoma State, and Texas advanced comfortably with a 40-point show from
Madison Booker. And now we're headed to the Sweet 16. These moments are earned off the clock,
those long before the lights ever come on.
The sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes,
and coming back for more every time.
Mazda puts the same drive into every detail.
Wins define the moment.
Putting in the work, that defines you.
There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.
Today's episode is also brought to you by Fan Dual Sportsbook.
The tournaments here, one of the best times of the year.
Brackets, buzzer beaters, upsets,
it's nonstop action from first tip to final cut down.
Now, Fanduel is giving you customers a way to stay in the action all tournament long.
You get back up to $300 back in bonus bets every day for 10 days.
That means 10 chances to stay involved throughout the entire tournament.
You can mix it up however you want.
Game picks, futures, or even same game parlias.
I'm looking at some of the futures that I'm interested in.
You can bet on teams to make the final four.
Is there any value in Iowa, right?
I mean, I get it.
Like Houston and Illinois look really good in the two-three matchup in Houston.
playing in a home crowd.
But you look at Iowa, they've already played Nebraska twice this year.
They won one of the games by five.
They lost the other one in overtime.
They could easily win that game, even though they're, you know, the nine seed versus
four seed.
What if Illinois does end up beating Houston, even though it is kind of like a road game?
Well, they lost to Illinois, but they only lost by six.
So like you have some big 10 familiarity.
Is there good value in Iowa plus 650, right?
Or is there a good value in Tennessee plus 800 who's playing an injured Iowa state?
And then what if Alabama upsets Michigan, Tennessee's, I think at one point earlier this year,
beat Alabama for like the fifth straight time.

That's supercast.com.
It's in the show notes as well.
Let's get to our strengths and weaknesses for Deshawn.
Good.
Let's start with the strengths.
I think the shooting is real.
Now, you watch some of the highlights, and it's not a quick release.
A lot of times it's mostly set shots,
and he's somebody who kind of has this, like, dip in his shot where he's bringing it down
before he's bringing it up.
And so sometimes that can lead to inconsistencies for players.
But other times, like,
Some guys just have weird shots.
And if it just goes in at this high of a level that it's been going in, like Tyrese Halliburton, very weird shot, but it just goes in, you know.
And that's kind of how I view this one.
He's shot 48% from three on.
This isn't just like, oh, he took like 20 attempts his freshman year.
And now he took 40 times.
He's taking 118 career attempts over two years as a big man.
So he's taking open ones.
They're selective spot up shots, but like 48% from three.
And even if you don't think that number's real, even if you think that drops a little.
bit just from a standpoint of like it's hard to sustain 48% and then you think it drops a little bit
more transferring up in competition against better teams what are we talking here 35 38% on like two
takes per game I would gladly take that like think about this for for instance um and here's the
other thing he's been a good free throw shooter so that tells you that that he should be able to you know
that he has good touch I guess is the way of putting that but like bryson tiller shot 52 three
pointers this year. He only made 14. Okay. If he, if this kid shot 35% with like,
that's a 13% drop from his career, right? That'd be 18 makes over 52 threes, but this kid takes
more threes than Tiller. And don't you think even four extra three point makes,
that could, I don't know, that could have been one extra win for Kansas this season. That could
have been the difference of getting a three seat in the NCAA tournament. Who knows? So I do think the
shooting is real. And I do think it'd be a much better shooter when you're playing him next to
Flory than what we saw from Till. Now,
And Tiller get better at three-point shooting?
Yes, absolutely.
But I think you have a little bit more proven reference of this kid being a real shooter than Tiller,
who even in his OTE days was kind of a high 20% three-point shooter.
Another strength here is efficiency in general.
It's not just the three-point shooting.
88th percentile in two-point shooting.
He also shot well at the free throw line.
You total it all up.
Ninety-ninth percentile true shooting percentage among forwards.
So this kid was as efficient as any forward in the.
country this past season. Again, once you adjust for playing bigger, taller, more athletic teams
by transferring up, those numbers drop down. But that's a pretty good cushion you can give yourself
that if you're like one of the very best at a lower level, what if it just drops to good at a
higher level? It's still good. You know what I mean? He also doesn't turn it over much,
which is obviously another thing that makes you efficient offensively, right? And I'll say this,
as we're going through some of these transfer potential targets for KU, I am going to only
to the side of offense.
From the standpoint of like, what have we seen in the last three years?
They haven't had enough offense.
There have been some teams from Kansas that have had teams that personnel-wise
shouldn't be as good of defensive teams as they wound up being.
They weren't great defensive teams, but Bill Self raised the floor on what they could potentially
be.
And that's what I want to steer into.
Get the offensive guys and how Bill Self raised the floor on the defense.
Here's another one.
I also think he has some nice turnaround.
makes in the post.
Kind of a thought that crossed my mind.
There were two guys that he reminded me of in shades, right?
Not entirely.
Like a Diet Coke, Milan, Mom Chilovich.
I say Diet Coke.
Mom Chilovich is having like one of the best pick and pop, like three point shooting seasons
from Ford we've ever seen in college basketball.
So like diet, diet Coke of that.
But just from the standpoint of like having this foreman who is an absolute sniper from
the outside, which I do find interesting too because when you look at KU's play
styles, pick and pop was KU's least efficient offensive play style this past season.
And I don't know that Bill Self ever really truly runs the offense to tailor to that,
but I also don't think he will avoid it.
Like, I mean, Marcus Morris, Marquif Morris were taking a three or two every game.
Perry Ellis would run that kind of elevator screenplay where he would get one or two every
game.
Deidre Clausen would shoot a couple in a game.
Like if you have the right guy for it, Bill Self will use it.
He won't use it as much as maybe more of a modern coach who's playing.
playing four out or five out or something like that.
But he will use it more than I think he gets credit for.
And I think good would, I think he would fit into being able to do that for KU.
He actually also, if you're looking at post efficiency, rated out in the 81st percentile in post-up efficiency.
So what did a lot of KU fans complain about this season that there wasn't enough post-up scoring?
This kid scored well in post-up situations this past year.
It's also a good rebounder, 82nd percentile offensive rebound rate, 90th percentile
That's a rebound rate.
That was another thing that was a problem for KU this year.
There's a good rebounder to potentially bring it.
Okay, what are some of his weaknesses, though?
Not a ton versus high-level competition to kind of prove it.
He played Toledo, who was playing for the Mac title.
Mac was good this year.
He goes for 17 and 8, but that's not the type of length
and athleticism you're going to see at the Power 4.
He played Drake, again, solid mid-majorie at 13 and 10.
He did play one game against Power 5 opponent.
It was Iowa, but it was also his first game of the year joining a new team.
he was fine. He had 11 points on four of six and three rebounds. But again, his first game. So it's like,
you're night and day to where you are now. So I mean, that just makes it kind of an unknown where you
would be taking a bit of a risk here, right? Now, we'll say, to his credit, it's only been
seven games against Ken Palm Top 100 teams. That's not very much. That's over two years.
But in those games, he did shoot 68% on twos and it went 511 on three. So small sample size,
good. I'd rather it be good in a small sample size than bad.
I guess, right?
The athleticism, I would say he's a weakness here.
Not a ton of hops vertically.
He's not the quickest.
He's not overly long.
I mentioned the mom Chilovich, like, light comp earlier.
Honestly, if I'm making like a full comp,
especially pertaining to KU,
to me, this is Perry Ellis.
Okay?
And I say that with all due respect.
Perry Ellis was a very efficient scoring player for KU.
It's, it's, I think a less, like, again, he was, he was solid in the post last year.
I don't think he's as good in the post as Perry Ellis was, but I think you have even more shooting here.
And to be clear, if you, if you paired Perry Ellis in a front court next to Flory Bedunga,
I think that front line would kind of eat.
You would have a nice balance of like offense and defense.
So, knowing all that, yes, Perry wasn't.
And this guy's actually, I think, bigger than Perry.
Maybe he's not as fast as Perry, but Perry was never like a, you know, Perry wasn't a plotter,
but he wasn't like, you know, known for his athleticism either.
I think probably longer wingspan than Perry, too.
I think there are some interesting comps there.
And Bill Self had a lot of success with Perry Ellis.
Now, what is the defense, I think is the final question here.
I think overall it was fine for Robert Morris, but just half a block per game.
You're about average in steel rate for your position.
then you're talking about the athleticism, the size questions, going up against a bigger league.
What does that mean?
I think you'd just kind of be hoping here, like, can you just be a neutral defender?
Or even like a, even if you're like a slightly below average defender, but you're a good
defensive rebounder that helps KU finish the defensive possession.
And if you're playing with Flory at the five, or even if Paul and B is in the game at the five,
the idea to me would be you have this really good rim protector defensive center next to you,
you're the offensive guy, he's the defensive guy. And I think you can make that work. Now,
Florey were to transfer away, this becomes a different question. So to me, like I said, this is a take.
But the big question becomes starter off the bench. I think if Kansas brings back Florey and let's say Tiller were to transfer away,
this to me would be a great addition to make to start next to Flore. And I think that would actually be a
a really good pairing of those two to that same notion.
And this is where the cost stuff comes in.
You know,
what if you find out Bryson Tiller wants $2 million,
I don't know,
total law random number,
and this kid wants $1 million.
I'm taking this for $1 million.
So it all just kind of depends on the numbers, right?
If it's even,
then that's a different conversation.
If you can get them, though,
to be your third big man,
come off the bench big man,
even better.
And the idea here to me is this too.
If you're able to,
let's say you let's say tiller did leave and you had the opportunity to bring him in as the
starting four i'm sure he'll get a good sum of money transferring up after he was the horizon
league player of the year but i don't think he's getting like the actual lenderboard money like
would bringing him on basically allow you as opposed to maybe going for somebody else at the
four cost you a chunk of change but not the highest chunk of change allow you to spend more money
at your other guard position and the wing position and then i'm even more
in on it because those are the positions I want KU to spend the most on in the offseason.
So yeah, this is overall take for me. I am a big fan of Deshaun Good.
All right, let's get on to some of the latest news. We'll get to that next.

Some of the other latest news, KU Women's Basketball season is still going.
They are in the women's NIT.
They beat Troy in their first game, 79 to 70 to give them a 20-win season.
And then they beat Rice 62 to 55.
So then I'm sitting at 2113 and they're on to the next round of the NIT where they will
be hosting San Diego State.
That'll be coming up on Thursday.
And it's actually in Allen Fieldhouse if anybody wants to go on out to the game.
I think my hope with this is that players like Jolia Davis and some of the younger players
can develop through playing some of these extra games and find success in chemistry
playing with one another.
And like the thing is the last time KU won the woman's NIT, the hope for me was that
they were going to springboard that and even more success the next season.
And it didn't really happen.
And I'm hoping that this second time around can do just that for the KU Women's
basketball program.
So, you know, I'd rather them be in the NCAA tournament.
But if you're going to be in the NIT, might as well go win it.
And that's where they're at right now.
Update on KU Baseball, who all of a sudden has found a little bit of a hot streak here.
They were sitting at 10 and 8 after some losses to attack.
They win the final game there.
Then they blow out Missouri.
Then they sweep Houston.
Then they get a couple of nice wins over Sacramento State.
So KU Baseball is now sitting at 16 and 8 on the season.
They're finding their stride.
And they got a big one coming up this weekend at Cincinnati.
who is a top 20 team in the RPI, at least as of the time that I'm speaking right now.
So if you can take two out of three there, you're going to be feeling really good.
Then you got the return trip at Missouri next Tuesday.
And then the next home games will be Thursday, Friday, Saturday, April 2, 3rd, 4th, when they're hosting the Utes of Utah.
So that'll be the upcoming schedule for them.
As far as KU softball, they've been having a good start to the season as well.
23 and 9 now on the year.
They're seeing it four and two in conference play in the Big 12, which is always a very difficult league in the softball world, although I guess Oklahoma leaving the league a couple of years ago.
That's certainly a little bit helpful there.
But most recently, they just won 10 to 5 against Utah to win the series, two games to one.
And they're going to be on the road at BYU for a three game set starting on a Thursday.
They'll be back to Arroka ballpark the following Thursday hosting a three game set with Arizona State.
All right, that'll do it for this episode of Lockdown, Jayhawks.
