I want bucket getters at the guard position for KU,
and Jackson Shelstad has an opportunity to be the next great small guard
who puts up buckets for Bill Self and for KU.
You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks,
part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
What's going on, Derek Johnson, with another episode of Locked on Jayhawks,
a little bonus episode.
Check out our final four lessons from earlier today as well.
And on today's episode, we're going to break down Jackson Shelstad.
Should he be a transfer portal target for KU basketball?
What would his fit be with KU, Scouting Report, strengths and weaknesses?
And we'll start right here with Shelstad, a six foot one guard from University of Oregon.
He's in the transfer portal.
It's funny.
The portal doesn't officially open until it was April 7th.
And all these guys are announcing that they're entering in.
We probably won't really hear rumors about certain players till it's open to avoid any possible tampering stuff.
But who knows here?
There have been a little bit of rumors of Shellstad being a connect to Arizona, wait and see on that, and who knows what's going to happen, Tommy Lloyd.
But anyway, this is a really good basketball player who if you just look at the raw stats from this year, you might be like, are we sure he's that good?
We'll get into what's going on.
So he was the two-time Gatorade player of the year in high school in the state of Oregon, joins the ducks in his home state, and he just hits the ground running.
All-pack 12,000, freshman team, average 0.8 points, 2.8 assists per game, solid shooting.
lines. And then in year two, ups it even more. 13.7 points per game, 2.7 assists per game. He shoots
45% from the floor, 38% from 3 and 84% at the foul line. That sounds like excellent shooting
lines. He was named third team all big 10 that year. He took Oregon to the NCAA tournament
where they won their first game and then lost their second game and a close one to Arizona.
But he short 42 points over the course of their two NCAA tournament games against Liberty in Arizona.
And last year, he has more of an up and down season.
And again, like I said, if you just look at the stats, you would see, you know,
a little 15.6 points per game.
That's good.
4.9 assists per game.
That's good.
But the efficiency is where you'd be like, okay, is this worth the price tag here?
39% from the floor, 31% from three.
Here's the deal.
He only played 12 games.
So one, one, smaller sample size.
Two, why did he only play 12 games?
The answer, he had a ligament injury in his shooting hand.
So even when he's playing through and trying to play through this injury, it is affecting his shooting ability.
And then it causes him to miss games and it's hampering over the course of the season.
Even if look at, you know, count those games in, his career three-point shooting percentage is 35% at over five tries per game and 79 career games played.
This dude is a good score.
He is an efficient shooter as long as he is healthy.
Now, he's applying for a medical red shirt for the season.
I don't know if he'll get it or not.
12 games played.
Usually it's like nine, I think.
But if it is approved, he's going to be.
be a redshirt junior next season. Even if he's not, he's still one of the better transfer portal
targets in the portal for anyone even as a true senior. And he's, you know, kind of a smaller combo
guard, which, hey, I wonder if Bill Self has ever had success with those guys. Yeah, he's had a lot of
success with smaller combo guards who can create a bucket for KU, right? And the metrics look really good
on Shell Stead. So this year, even with the missed action, 74th percentile in
RAPM, 64th percentile on win shares per 40, 80th percentile on PER, 69th and wins above
replacement player. So those are all solid. But if you go back to the previous season when he is
healthy and playing the season, 93rd percentile on RAPM, 83rd percent on winchairs per 40
and wins above replacement player. And this season, he was a little bit lower on the defensive
end in some of those metric numbers than the year prior. But if I look at the on-off numbers,
too. As a sophomore, Oregon was better at both ends of the floor when he was on the floor.
There were over five points per 100 possessions better overall. And this past year, they were over
15 points per 100 possessions better with him on the floor, including at both ends. So again,
you would look at Oregon as a team and go, I forget their record. It was like 12 and 19 or something.
And you look at that and go, man, this guy only shot 39% from the field on a 12 and 19 team.
The reason why he shot so poorly is the injury. And the reason why Oregon was,
so bad is because he was injured. They were 15 points plus 15 in net rating per 100 possessions
when he was playing. He got off the team and the rest of the team just fell apart, right?
And so for me, if this is a take, not just for Kansas, but probably like any team in the
country. So what would the fit potentially be? What are the strengths and weaknesses here?
We'll get to that next. Today's episode's brought to you by Coast Pay, given locked on calls

Our strengths is weaknesses for Jackson Shellstat.
Let's start with the strengths here.
Scoring ability.
He is really able to make shots from all levels of the defense,
makes them difficult to defend 75th percentile or better,
all three of his seasons at rim attacks and mid-range.
So even though he's a smaller guard, he gets to the rim,
and then he can also pull up in the mid-range if you over-emphasize the drive.
If you look at his sophomore season,
so his, I guess, most efficient, healthiest season,
96 percentile in dribble jumpers.
I talk about Kansas wanting guards who can create and get buckets for KU,
that kind of fits the billing right there, right?
Another strength here is shooting ability,
which is kind of the same thing, but a little difference.
It's the efficiency.
79th percentile and effective fuel goal percentage as a sophomore,
75th percentile as a freshman.
Even this year, it was, you know, slightly below average.
That was through an injury and limited sample size.
And even with that down year, like I said earlier,
35 percent from three on good volume.
He has also been better than average to good at two-point shooting every year
of his college basketball career.
He also avoids turnovers, which is really important,
obviously at the guard position, right?
So he had a 93rd percentile assist rate this season.
And what's really impressive is the assist of turnover numbers.
96 percentile an assist to turnover ratio this year,
78th the year before 75th the year before that.
So every year, 75th percentile or better in assist to turnover ratio.
He also has very good quickness.
I've seen some places that mentioned him as having like good toughness.
Both of those things feel like a bill self-match in a very big.
way. Weaknesses for Shellstad. I mean, he is smaller stature, right? There are certain things
you have to overcome with that, potentially on the defensive end if you're playing a bigger guard.
How do you do when you're being guarded by teams with bigger length? Like those are questions.
Rebounding, I think that kind of comes into the smaller stature. He just doesn't really get them, right?
He has had some smaller guards that will get, you know, their nose dirty rebounding, like Frank Mason
and Devontagrim. That's not as much the case with Shellstead. He also doesn't really create steals.
A lot of times you get these smaller, quicker guards that can.
can be really good at getting steals. I think he's a fine defender. I just don't think he's like
a great or an impactful one either. And I think you see that in some of the lack of steel rate.
He also doesn't really get to the free throw line, which again, kind of goes in line with the
small stature thing. So those are all things that you'd have to deal with if you get him.
But as far as the fit, potentially, with KU, would he fit in? How would he fit in? How would it all
work? Is this to take? Is it not? We'll get to that next. This episode's brought to you by Robin Hood.

some of the stuff with jackson shellstad one of the the highest ranked transfer portal
additions coming out of Oregon and i think the big question with fit here is what would the
fit be because when you're looking at it kansas bringing in taylin kinney a mcdonald's all-american
that would be your starting back or at least projected right jackson shellstad and taylin kini
and how would those two fit together?
On one hand, Shellstad, a little bit of a smaller guard.
Kenny's 64.
Now, that's what he's listed at.
Is he closer to 6-2, 6-3?
Is he actually 6-4?
That becomes an important question there, right?
But if he is 6-4, I think you can work with that with 6-1 and 6-4 at the college level, right?
That would be as good of an offensive and shot creation backcourt as KU has had, honestly,
from both guys since Frank and Devante.
Like, obviously, Devon Dotson created shots in a different way, like driving to the rim and stuff.
and obviously remi martin was able to do it but that wasn't really a one-two punch with remi and duan you know what i mean
like melvin was hit or miss with it so like that would be an incredible shot creation and shooting back
court if you had kinney next to to shellstead here right um now obviously the the price kind of
comes into question here and that's obviously always an important one here i i will say like
Would there be any defensive questions with those two?
That becomes a big question with this as well.
Again, Keyes had success with the smaller guard thing and the shooting would be enough,
but would the defense be there?
There's going to be some questions about Kenny as a defender in general.
Then he's a freshman.
With Shell's dad, like I said, I think he's a fine defender,
but I don't know that he's like a, you know, overwhelming game changer defender or anything like that.
Are you going to have enough?
And does it depend on having floryback where you need his defense to be able to do it?
Now, I continue to lean on the idea I want more offense than defense.
Let Bill Self figure out the defense because I think there's a better chance
Bill Self figures out the defense as the season goes on than he figures out the offense.
I think that's what we've seen over the last couple of seasons.
But again, what is the price here, right?
Like, is the price you going to cost you what it would cost for like an All-American?
Because if that's the level, you know, I don't know that I'm willing to go there here, right?
like does using up all your budget on this and then not being able to pay as much potentially
like on the wing does that actually make sense so as always it is dependent on the price
but the idea of potentially having like shellstad Kenny a wing who can make some shots
that's that's certainly a dream that I would like to live in we'll just put it that way so yes
I would be very in on bringing Jackson shellstad in the warrants all right that'll do for this
