KU Football has made some big transfer portal additions
to check that out too. But on today's episode, what's next in
this offseason still a good amount to do for Bill Self and
Company for KU basketball. Also get into KU showing some
interest in seems like these three guards who would really
fit into being that shooter off the bench role for KU along some
other transfer portal news and the latest news with KU football in
the NFL Draft and KU baseball continuing to roll on on today's
episode of the show, which is all brought to you by the

Because the off season to do list,
it seems like it's kind of come to a little bit of a stop here.
Right? You get a honey do list from your wife or girlfriend
over the weekend or significant other.
And then all of a sudden, you know, you're like,
I'm halfway through it.
I need a break.
You know, I want to watch the last couple of innings of this baseball game or something.
And it's like, okay, then we'll finish it.
You know, after that,
we'll finish it the rest of the day.
There's been a bit of a hiatus.
Now, it obviously isn't,
I don't think Bill South is kicking back
and just watching Royals games.
I'm sure he's still making phone calls,
making things happen and figuring stuff out,
you know, just in the shadows, so to speak, right?
But Kansas still has four scholarships left to fill
at this point in time.
No, I'm not worried that
they're not going to fill them.
I do think it's interesting
from a standpoint of like.
From a money allocation thing,
and I think this applies more for football.
Are we going to see teams moving
forward though just say hey,
you know we don't really need 14 players,
which is Kansas scholarships
amount this year.
But most teams are gonna have 15 in football.
Do we really need 105? Are they going to get to a point 14 players, which is Kansas scholarships amount this year, but most teams are gonna have 15 in football.
Do we really need 105?
Are they going to get to a point where they're just like,
you know what, for KU football, we're gonna use 90.
We're gonna use 85.
For KU basketball, we're gonna only use 12 or 13.
And not having those two guys at the end of the roster,
even though they're not gonna be eyes making very much
from the NIL, like every penny matters, right?
And it adds up and anywhere you can squeeze extra money. So I do find that interesting, like, they're not going to be eyes making very much from the NIL. Like every penny matters, right?
And it adds up and anywhere you can squeeze extra money.
So I do find that interesting.
Like will they use off or I don't know
that are we kind of curious to see,
but if I'm divvying out like how those four
would likely be divvied out,
I think one, obviously you're looking for one more
like starter level addition.
Obviously we've had a lot of conversations
and talks about Darian Williams,
the transfer from Texas Tech, we're
gonna have a deep dive on a player coming on tomorrow's
episode that might make some sense, you know, whether it's a
wing, whether it's a foreman, getting another starter level
player, and it does seem like a wing has more so been the main
target, I guess it depends how you view Darien Williams, makes
sense for that player to be able to shoot
the basketball because you're looking for more floor spacing
and shooting around the current lineup
that you have right now.
It also does make sense for it to be kind of a splash play,
kind of one more really good player
because right now the roster, I think it's pretty good.
I do like that they've gone more for fit than anything.
You look at Bartorvik, it hasn't ranked 10th for next year, right? Feels like you could use one more
splash play, though you could use one more stud play route
there, right. And that is, you know, possibly again, Darian
Williams, what we have the opportunity to do there. So I
view that as being one of the scholarships. Backup Big Man is
another one of those, right? I mean, you feel
good about Flory, but also Flory gotten foul trouble at times
early on last year. Usually, that's something big men get
better at the longer you know, they're playing the longer
they're staying in college or whatever level it is. So you
think that'll be a little better this year. But even then, you
know, how comfortable are you with Bryson tiller is the
backup five. I mean, Bryson tiller might be awesome. He's a
former, you know, fringe five, four star recruit, whatever you
want to call him, you could play the four and five, he might be
really good for Kansas. But he's also coming off a injury where,
you know, he came into Kansas a semester early red shirted. And
the idea was get him acclimated with everything. Well,
unfortunately, because the injury he didn't get to like
practice with the team and everything.
So like, when is he gonna be cleared?
When is he gonna be able to play with the team?
And those sort of things.
And then when he is back to play,
is it gonna bother him at all?
Is it gonna be a nagging injury,
similar to what we've seen with guys like Shaquille Moore?
Or is it gonna be something he's gonna totally move past
and be totally fine, right?
He could totally be your backup five and that might work
or it might take him a year to kind of shake the rust off
of that possible injury.
You don't entirely know.
And so there's a lot of, I guess, questions
because you don't really have anybody besides that.
Like, to me, Calderon is more of a three, four wing.
Well, if a guy who played the four,
then he would be the five,
but I guess because of his wingspan and out of dire needs.
And right now, if you're just looking at the depth chart, he would have to be your third string five. You need
another five men who can come in and play minutes for, and that's the other thing. Like I don't
think Flory is going to be playing 32 minutes a game like Hunter Dickinson was. It could be closer
to 25 to 28 from his starting level play, right? So there are real minutes to have at that backup
five position. And then also it's the question of like,
do you bring someone in who can play, you know, five,
but also play a little bit of four next to Flory?
Like, can they shoot a little bit there, right?
And if, if going back to the number one on this list,
the adding another splash player,
if that doesn't work out
and you end up having to add more of a role player,
does it make sense to just invest in more of a true big
who can shoot it at least a little bit
to play it for here for KU
and then can fill in as a backup five
and then like you switch it around.
Instead of saying we're looking for a bench big
and a splash play who can play the wing and shoot,
you look for a splash big who'd be out there
and then get a bench wing.
I don't think that'd be the ideal scenario
But you do have to at least keep your options open in that scenario
But yeah back a big man still important at this point in time a lot of guys have been going off the the board and we
Just had our episode last week. Thank you
Never dares if you already caught it talking about some of the targets we're gonna talk about in our second segment some of the guys
That have already gone off the board since then so feels like that's kind of drying up a little bit
But if KU is going the international route,
looking to that market, you know,
there's a lot of guys we just don't know about, right?
Then you're looking for somebody in that kind of diggy,
quite Jaylen Coleman lands role,
the guy who was kind of your eighth or ninth man.
He's a fringe player is part of your rotation.
If he's making shots that day,
he's going to be part of your rotation
and he's going to play real minutes. If he's not making shots,
he's not gonna get much playing time in the second half
or anything like that, right?
And some games it might be five minutes,
some games it might be a DNP,
other games it might be 25 minutes in a given game.
We're gonna talk about some guards
that it seems like Kansas is targeting for that role
at this point in time in our second segment as well.
And then a developmental player
for kind of the last scholarship
there. At that point, your rotation would be set if you take
care of one, two and three on that list, you don't need
another player to come in and be ready to like obviously you want
everybody to fight for minutes and compete because you want
that level of competitiveness in your program. But you want
somebody who has an understanding that yeah, you
might not hit the court this year, right?
It might take you a year or two, but if you develop and you do practice hard and you do all these things,
you could eventually work into that, but this year you're really going to have to show out if you want that to kind of be the case.
And then I think from there, the offseason progression just comes developing the team,
figuring out how it all fits and then kind of turning an eye to 2026 for the recruiting game
with with looking, you know, trying to nail down Tyron Stokes
and other guys in that class of 2026. But yeah, that's kind of
where I look at right now. And so when you go back to what is
the timeline for all of this, you look at Darian Williams, and
you look at the I mean, we're gonna have a deep dive on Tuesday's
episode of RJ Lewis.
And RJ Lewis transfer from St. John's, he's in the NBA draft process,
same way Darian Williams is, right?
And a lot of the guys you're looking at
for that final splash play, so to speak,
as a transfer portal edition,
might be going through the NBA draft process.
And so that's gonna elongate the process here,
if you're built South in Kansas to where,
you know, we might not know.
And because a lot of these other scholarship offers
might come down to how much did you pay that splash play?
Like, let's say you had 4 million left lying around.
If you have to pay the big player
you're bringing in 2 million, right?
That gives you more money to spend on a backup big.
And then maybe the market of the guys
that you're looking at is a little bit better versus if more money to spend on a backup big. And then maybe the market of the guys that you're looking at
is a little bit better versus if you have to spend
three million of that, you know, the backup big
becomes a different conversation
in what you can kind of bring in.
And so you almost wonder if it is a little bit beholden
to that with the exception of I'm sure Kansas does have,
you know, a certain number in mind of like,
okay, we can fit this into the budget if they take this much.
But if they want more than that, then we are gonna have to wait on what happens with this first guy.
So it kind of makes things interesting and does make this feel like it is going to be a bit of a
long game, bit of a waiting game for KU to kind of fill out the roster a little bit more. All right,
who are some players they're showing portal interest in? Because there's some guards,
also some centers going off the board that we talked about from last week's episode. And also
KU baseball continues to kill it
NFL draft happen some Jayhawks saw their name called as well. We'll get to all those and more on locked on Jayhawks

You can get Kansas with some pretty juicy odds, 12 to one,
if you think they can really bounce back
and win the big 12 this year.
The favorite right now is Texas Tech at plus 550, which like, you know, I think
tech will be pretty good this year. There's going to be solid teams in the big 12 throughout,
but like it's a wide open league. So why not? Why not Kansas? Also, if you want to,
you know, get in on the Jaylen Daniels Heisman Trophy season, he showed he could stay healthy
this past season. He's going at 60 to one over at FanD. Don't miss out at the fan duel.com claim your $250 in

episode of locked on Jay Hawks. Don't forget to make lock on
college football or locked on college basketball. Your second
lesson every day. Alright, so some names flying off the board,
but also K you've shown some interest in some guards we talked about in the number three on those All right, so some names flying off the board, but also KU showing some interest in some guards we talked about in
the number three on those four scholarships, so to speak, in
segment one about the Jalen Coleman Lance diggie court role,
somebody who could come off the bench and shoot three story and
on this year's team, that might actually be more important than
in previous teams, because there are maybe some questions about
what the three point shooting of this team will be. So maybe that role ends up being even bigger than in other teams, because there are maybe some questions about what the three point shooting of this
team will be. So maybe that role ends up being even bigger than
in other years to what that role typically is. But point being,
you're looking for somebody who can shoot threes. I mean, that
it's a big part of it can shoot them at pretty good volume can
shoot them at good efficiency is comfortable playing off ball.
And you're also looking for somebody who I think would be
content in that role, right? I mean, you can understand again, like you
want these players to be competitive. You don't want the player to come in and be
like, nah, I don't want to start. You don't want to come in and be like, nah, I
don't want to play that much. You want them to come in and try to fight for
every minute possible. But you want them to be able to be content if that does
end up being 10 minutes per game, right? You don't want them causing a ruckus in the locker room
if that is the case.
So Jarvis Moss is one of those guys
that there's been some interest in.
Kay, he was previously at Radford, Davidson,
and Stanford before that.
He's a six-four shooting guard,
13 and a half points per game at Radford this past year.
37 and a half percent from three,
six and a half attempts per game.
Also 84% at the foul line.
So a lot of three-point attempts per game. Also 84% at the foul line. So a lot of three point attempts per game.
The effective field goal percentage,
true shooting percentage solid for him as well.
The team was about eight points better offensively
and about nine points better defensively
when he was on the floor.
So you like to see that six, four, 200,
obviously he's got good size
to be on the defensive end as well.
Didn't turn it over much 71st percentile in turnover rate.
He also was ranked high in 3.10, 79th percentile,
and then 69th percentile in 3.0 percentage.
Didn't have a ton of steals or blocks,
despite the fact that the odd-off numbers
were really good on the defensive end of the floor.
So that one would be interesting.
John Buggs III, he is a transfer from East Tennessee State.
Before that was at North Texas, UTSA, Hill College,
which is a junior college, and then UMass.
So I believe this will be his final year
because he had a couple of seasons
where I think he can get a medical redshirt out of
and then he's got the Juco year.
But he's a 6-3 shooting guard,
11 points per game at ETSU last year,
41% from three on 6.4 attempts per game,
solid effective field goal, solid true shooting percentage.
The team was about five points worse with him
on the floor defensively,
but this is a guy who low usage player.
38th percentage usage rates, going back to the idea,
you know, you want them to be able to play
without the ball and work that.
Well, that works with bugs.
98th percentile turnover rate, right?
So he's not turning it over much.
He's not causing problems.
He's playing well off the ball.
89th percentile three-point attempt rate,
92nd percentile and three-point percentage.
He also shot 47% on two deep threes per game.
So this is a guy with serious range
that can really stretch it out.
I would like that addition of bugs
in terms of the offensive end. I think Moss not as good of a shooter as bugs, but probably
gives you more on the defensive end. So that's kind of where you'd be at between
those two. And then the most recent one is Ahmad Bynum. Apparently Bill
Self recruited his like uncle. There's a story in the Kansas City Star, I think
Mike Vernon mentioned it too, but a story in the Kansas City Star, talking to like him and his agent and stuff like that.
This one concerns me a little bit more.
So here, let me get into the numbers here.
So Bina was at UTEP before that was at Trinity Valley Community College and then before that
was at DePaul.
He's a 6'3 shooting guard.
He'll be a technically a redshirt senior, but because of the Juco year, I think he'd
be a redshirt junior. So 10.3 points per game doesn't really do much else.
Only 1.7 rebounds point nine assists. He shot like below 40%
on two point shots. But he did shoot 44% from three really,
really good three point shooter 5.3 attempts per game. That's
basically the one thing he does out there, right? The team was
six points better offensively, he's on the court, they were
about four points worse defensively, it was on the court. They were about four points worse defensively
when he was on the court.
20th percentile assist to turnover rate.
So it doesn't do great there.
He was 67th percentile in a Keam rate.
So you like to see that.
82nd percentile, three-pointed temperate,
96th percentile in three-point percentage.
And he was in the 40th percentile
or lower in every shooting zone,
except the two from three,
where he was in the 84th percentile or better
from both corner and above the break.
So really good three point shooter.
Here's why, okay, so going back to the idea
that you want somebody who's comfortable in the role.
This was a quote in that Kansas City Star article
from Rod Bynum,
going to Kansas would be a great situation.
It would be a great decision for me and coach Self.
I can definitely help Kansas win more games.
And I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking that a
little bit. Maybe it's just like, what do you want them to
say? No, I'm not gonna have an impact on the floor. But I
almost view that as like, I'm going to have a big impact and
then winning games. And there's part of me that's sitting there
like, that might not be the role for you. That might be a little
upsetting. And here's where it comes into play. So if you if
you like see stuff from fans of other schools
when you add their, like Jayden Dawson's perfect example.
There were a lot of Loyola Chicago fans who were like,
oh man, you guys are gonna love him.
Like we love that he was dog, all these things, right?
That's a good sign.
And maybe it was more of a sign with like AJ Stor
than we let on because there were a lot of Wisconsin fans
that were kind of like, ah, you know,
in the same way that Kansas fans,
when Jeff Grimes left to Wisconsin were like,
oh my goodness, like, yeah, like thank you for taking him away.
You know what I mean?
Like sometimes it's not the be all end all,
but sometimes you can really tell from a previous fan base.
You talk to the DePaul fan base where he was at before,
and I don't know that you'll get glowing reviews.
And so he was at DePaul for two years, one he redshirted,
his second year he played 11 games.
He was suspended indefinitely from the team. I think it was on January 4th
of that season. Their head coach later said that like, he didn't go into what happened.
So I don't entirely know what he did, but he was suspended for the rest of the season
from January 4th on, and then ended up entering the transfer portal in middle March. I'm sure
stemming from that, right? So what did he do?
I don't entirely know, but he was suspended from the team.
So he goes to the junior college
and then he goes to UTEP this past year.
He gets suspended for the conference USA tournament
from UTEP for a violation of team rules.
And again, the coach didn't really go into what he did,
just kind of a violation of team rules.
So here you're talking about a guy where it's like,
if you don't wanna shake the boat,
you don't wanna rock the boat with the guy who's going to be your eighth or ninth man.
And you have a guy who's been suspended from his two previous Division one schools.
I don't know that I'm totally a board on that, but I don't know.
I've liked the way that this staff is so far in the portal gone all about fit.
And so like if you're going for all talent, then sure, this makes sense, but that hasn't
been your play so far.
Now, does that allow you because you've been fit so far that you can afford like one move
like this?
Maybe.
But I just like if you're comparing it to Jarvis Moss or John Buggs the third, and again,
you know, money and other stuff comes into this.
But yeah, I think I'd be going for those two ahead of him for sure. Other portal news, by the way, these are a lot of
players that we've mentioned in the past, maybe connected with
KU or just targets in general. Terrence Arseneau is going to
NC State. Noah Collier to LaSalle, we mentioned him in
the back of big conversation. Christian Coleman to Oklahoma
State, really good springy foreman mentioned him in the
big conversation. Noah Ammenhauser, that same big backup, big DeFleury episode, 72 big men from coastal Carolina.
He's going to Oregon State. Joel Larmo training from UC Riverside is to Nevada.
And then Emma Juru, the really athletic big from George Mason I liked, is going to East Carolina.
And then the last big one was Nada Awusu Enane, a guy who visited KU earlier, committed SMU, exited out of
SMU re entered into the portal, he's gonna end up going to Grand
Canyon. So any scuttlebutt there with Kansas is no longer thing,
he'll be a lope. So a lot of centers moving off the board,
Kansas might really have to go that international route. Let's
finish up here little KU baseball little NFL draft with KU football. It was a fun week
for both of those with KU athletics.

All right, thank you for joining us on this episode of Locked on Jayhawks.
So it was a fun weekend for KU Athletics.
Could have been even more fun with the NFL draft.
Let's start there.
Devin Neal goes in the sixth round of the Saints.
I felt like one where he could have gone
in the third to fifth round.
The sixth feels a little low for me,
but I think the Saints got a good one.
And I think a good spot for Devin Neal.
Obviously Alvin Kamara is in front of you,
but Kamara is starting to get a little older
from the running back position.
And Kendrick Miller hasn't done anything
to lock down a spot for them.
So I'm just not gonna count out Devon Neal.
That dude, I think he's gonna be a pro for a long time.
Bryce Cabledo is a six round pick of the Seahawks.
They announced him as a guard.
Really cool just his progression.
He goes from being somebody who was thrown into the fire
too early as a true freshman offense lineman
in the COVID year for Kansas
with the last miles team.
And he just progressed and what's the light pole,
you know, coaching staff got in, he just really took off.
So cool to see him go in the sixth round.
I would have thought the first lineman taken for KU
would have been Logan Brown.
He ends up going undrafted,
quickly signs with the Minnesota Vikings.
Kobe Bryant, I thought he would have been drafted too.
I think disrespect there, he goes to the Falcons
undrafted. I think that a lot of these guys are going to have
chances to make the rosters. I'm gonna expect Colby Bryant to
make the roster like I'm being completely honest. Melo Dotson
same thing to the Raiders. A couple of KU receivers Quentin
Skinner goes to the New York Jets and Luke Grimm goes to the
Chargers. Then Jeremy Robinson,
he'll be with Austin Booker with the Bears.
JB Brown goes to the Broncos.
And then the Chiefs got in on the action
with a couple of guys, Marvin Grant,
which I'll be interested to see
if the Chiefs use him as a safety or a linebacker or what.
And then this is my favorite one, Jared Casey.
Jared Casey goes to the Chiefs.
They announced him as a fullback. And I. Jared Casey goes to the Chiefs. They announced him
as a fullback and I think he was all big 12 fullback. He was kind of using his H back
by KU and he was best used that way with Andy Kotelnicki more so I think than with Jeff
Grimes. Chiefs don't really have a fullback. I know they had Carson Steele on the roster.
He's more of a running back than he is a fullback. Maybe he can make the roster. I think it'd
be really cool if Jared Casey would. And I don't know, I'd probably get myself
a Jared Casey Chiefs jersey,
if we're being completely honest.
Also some KU baseball updates here.
A sweep for KU baseball over the Utes of Utah.
They beat them 2-0, 12 to five, and 12 to 11,
the final game.
A grand slam puts them in front late,
and then they're able to close the door at the end.
So overall, that puts them now at 35 and 10 on the season.
They're now 15 and six in Big 12 play,
which is currently in second place.
They're only behind West Virginia, who's 16 and three.
So that would put them, what, two games behind West Virginia.
And then they're a game ahead of Arizona State.
They're a game ahead of TCU.
They're two games ahead of Arizona.
So it's tight among the top at the Big 12,
but it's been a heck of a play so far for
KU baseball and the schedule gets very interesting from here.
So on Tuesday night, KU is hosting Missouri.
That'll be at six o'clock on Tuesday.
That'll be a fun one.
And certainly the student section and the, you know, fans that have been really filling
out Hoagland so far, they're going to make a raucous environment against Missouri.
And then they're back at home for a three game set next weekend, Cincinnati. Then they're at Missouri for a midweek game the following week.
Then BYU that following weekend.
And they finish up, mentioned West Virginia's in first and the Big 12.
Well, they finish up at West Virginia in Morgantown.
So if things keep trending the way they are, could that one, you know, determine who wins the big 12 kids obviously still with a lot of work to be done before you can have that
conversation but they're doing the work right now and it looks pretty cool into it.
