Starting point is 00:00:00 On today's bonus Locked on Jayhawks, we're diving more into the IARP ruling and the biggest pros and cons, the biggest wins and losses for KU basketball and the men's basketball program after the ruling officially came down yesterday with a little bit more time to digest. You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on Podcast Network. Your team every day. I'm Derek Johnson. Also on YouTube. You can subscribe to the show there and catch all our stuff. On today's episode of Locked on Jayhawks, this is a bonus show. We are going more into the IRP stuff. I did a quick reaction right when the initial story came out,
Starting point is 00:01:02 which thanks a lot, Pat Forty, because you messed up and missed some of the stuff that didn't happen. Pat Forty remains kind of a clown. And so there ended up being more stuff than actual stuff that KU had to lose and loss of some 2018 stuff. They don't have any future punishments or anything like that, but definitely some stuff I wanted to talk about more in depth. So this will give us a little bit more time based off from yesterday about what we learned. So we're going to have our biggest pros and cons, our biggest losses and wins. Let's start with the negative and then we'll finish positive. The biggest losses from the IARP case, you lost the wins in the 2017-18 season in which Silvio De Sousa played.
Starting point is 00:01:41 Now, if you remember, Silvio De Sosa joined midway through semester. KU in the first semester of that 17-18 season was at one point playing Clay Young in a real game against Syracuse, against the 7-3 center. And so KU had this kid, Silvio De Sosa, committed for the class to come in the next year, but they figured out a way for him to be able to graduate and get whatever he needed to get so that he could join the team midway through semester. And then he played in the second semester. I did see some people being like, the NCAA cleared him, though, before that 17-18 season. I don't believe that's correct.
Starting point is 00:02:12 I believe Silvio DeSoto, I guess he was cleared in the way that any college kid is cleared when they get to college. But I think you're misconstruing two stories. Because what happened was, if you remember, Silvio DeSoto played the second half of that 2018 season. Then he was suspended in the 2018-2019 season. They originally suspended him for two years. They got it knocked down to one. So he missed all the 18-19 season, and then he was cleared for the 19-20 season. That's the timeline there. The reason he missed the first semester wasn't
Starting point is 00:02:40 because he wasn't cleared and then he was cleared. It's because they added him midway through semester. So I think that was kind of a false nomer that I've seen a couple KU fans bring up but anyway so he played in not all of the games I think it was like 20 games they lose the vacancy of those and because of those it puts you behind Kentucky once again for the all-time win total you're now seven wins behind Kentucky all time after the vacation of wins so that's obviously a loss here you lose your 2018 final four which that stinks you have to take down the thing on the banner and everything so that's no fun even though we all remember it the loss of the 2018 NCAA tournament appearance so it no longer counts as an NCAA tournament
Starting point is 00:03:22 appearance meaning officially according to the record book KU's you know NCAA tournament streak will go from 1990 till 2017 and now their current streak would be from 2019 on which would be 1921 because no tournament in 2022 and 23 now so I guess a four NCAA tournament streak and when they show that graphic on CBS on selection tell you which teams have had the longest streaks of the NCAA tournament normally Kansas is like first well now it's not gonna have Kansas on there at least for for this time and on one hand you can't erase the memories I live in that world like I continue to refer if you ask me who won the 2013 national championship I still say Louisville. I don't care.
Starting point is 00:04:06 And I think a lot of people don't care either. Like, if you went to the game in Omaha for Duke and Kansas, you had a wonderful time, and you always will remember those memories. If you were watching the game at home, and then you stormed Massachusetts Street here in Lawrence, you always are going to remember those and remember the fun times. You're always going to remember Malik Newman going off in March. You're going to remember Devontae Graham. You're going to remember a and remember the fun times. You're always going to remember Malik Newman going off in March. You're going to remember Devante Graham.
Starting point is 00:04:27 You're going to remember a teammate in the final four. You're still going to have your t-shirt of the 2018 final four, right? None of those things are going to go away. And from that standpoint, I guess who really cares about what they say can or can't happen. But, you know, from a record keeping perspective, it does stink because you're going to look up and the banner won't be there. And like I said, with the graphic and maybe in 20 to 30 years from now when you look back at
Starting point is 00:04:51 the record keeping and you just say oh well this is how many final force kansas has and this is how many kentucky has and this is how many north carolina and some of these schools maybe some of the context about why kansas has won less is going to be lost a little bit the asterisk the note or the context is going to get lost a little bit. The asterisk, the note, or the context is going to get lost a little bit more, especially on a national audience as opposed to a local audience. But again, you know, it's hard to say that. And I guess if we are in the game, if the NCAA is like, hey, we're taking away these things that happen,
Starting point is 00:05:17 then shouldn't technically we all get refunded? Like I spent a couple hundred dollars on a Final Four ticket to see KU get blasted by Villanova. Should we get refunded should the NCAA if they're telling me it never happened then shouldn't I get my money back for because I paid a ticket for nothing happened I want my money back from the NCAA if they're telling me that it never happened all right let's continue on with the biggest wins though out of all this from the IARP ruling first this episode of the show is brought to you by FanDuel get ready for
Starting point is 00:05:41 the NFL season credible offers from FanD, America's number one sportsbook. Right now, new customers can bet $5 and get $200 in bonus bets guaranteed. Plus, all new customers who bet $5 will get $100 off of NFL Sunday ticket from YouTube and YouTube TV. Now is the best time to join FanDuel. So visit FanDuel.com and kick easy to use, and you can bet on everything from spreads to player props and more.
Starting point is 00:06:10 So visit FanDuel.com slash locked on and kick off the NFL season with an offer you don't want to miss. FanDuel, official partner of the NFL. So the biggest wins from all this, from the IRP ruling. Well, obviously, it's that you don't have to worry about the shadow of this hanging over you anymore. That was as big a part as any. And Bill Sahl said it in the press conference yesterday that, you know, recently, maybe over the last year or two or three years, it hasn't had as big of an impact in recruiting than maybe it did at the beginning of it.
Starting point is 00:06:33 But it definitely did. And, like, there are certain players where, like, Jeremiah Robinson Earl, like, I don't know, it feels like that would have been one that maybe would have landed had this stuff not happened. And who knows how this changes the trajectory of KU and if they win more in one year, if they win less in another year because of long-term players that might have stayed and got scholarships. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:06:51 It's impossible to know the butterfly effect. But it's good to be out of that shadow officially, and I think you're seeing that right now with the way KU is recruiting and landing where he's passed more. Check out that episode if you missed it on a bonus show. The main biggest win, though, here is no postseason ban. If you would have approached before this ruling came out or when the case originally started and said,
Starting point is 00:07:13 hey, you have the option here. You can have a one-year postseason ban, but you're going to keep your 2018 Final Four and season and everything that happened. By the way, the 2018, the individual stuff does still count for players. So like Malik Newman still retains, you know,
Starting point is 00:07:30 whatever region that was Midwest region, MOP and Devante Graham retains, you know, all American status and those sorts of things. So I think that means technically you don't, Kazabuki has actually, I don't know. We'll get to that here.
Starting point is 00:07:43 But I guess if you would approach that and said, you can have the one of your postseason band, but keep the 2018 stuff or you can lose the 2018 stuff, but have no postseason band. I think you take the no postseason band, right? It stinks to go into a year and be like, yeah, we don't even have a shot because especially with every year with Kansas, you're like, we feel like we have a shot. And to take each and away, that would stink.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Headed into March Madness, it just wouldn't. It would feel deflating over the course of the season, and it would lead to a lot of players transferring out of your program because they want to go play in an NCAA tournament. So no postseason ban, that is the biggest win of all the wins. No more suspensions to any of the coaches. No more recruiting punishments, such as a loss of more scholarships or inability to recruit at X or Y event on top of
Starting point is 00:08:26 there were no additive, I guess, to what you already self-imposed, I should say. And then no loss of those other individual accomplishments and awards like, again, Devontae Graham being an All-American. So those are the biggest wins out of all this with the IRP case. But again, the biggest win by far is the no postseason ban. Let's finish up. There's some other weird, I guess, things to come out of this uh first of this episode is brought to you by linkedin jobs these days every new potential hire can feel like a high stakes wager for your small business you want to be 100 certain that you have access to the best qualified candidates available which is why you have to check out linkedin jobs helping you find the right people for your team
Starting point is 00:09:02 faster and for free add your job in the purple hashtag hiring frame to your LinkedIn profile to spread the word that you're hiring. They have simple tools like screening questions that make it super easy to focus on the candidates with just the right skills so you can prioritize who you'd like to interview and hire in a rapid manner. It's why small businesses rate LinkedIn jobs number one in delivering quality hires versus leading competitors. So go to LinkedIn jobs and they'll help you find the qualified candidates for your job
Starting point is 00:09:29 faster. Post your job for free at linkedin.com slash locked on college. That's linkedin.com slash locked on college. Post a job for free. Terms and conditions apply. All right. I guess overall thoughts here. I think I would grade this like a, a B-plus for Kansas.
Starting point is 00:09:50 It's hard to give it an A or an A-plus because you do lose the stuff in 2018. That does knock it down from being an A or an A-plus. But obviously avoiding the postseason ban, avoiding any other extra punishments outside of that for the current team and for the future team, I think are absolutely huge. So that's why it'd probably be like a B plus for me. But hey, other weird things to come out of this. Well, obviously very weird that like DeAndre Ayton and Zion Williamson were kind of a part of this,
Starting point is 00:10:14 but ended up, you know, Zion Williamson, Duke doesn't get in trouble here. So weird side notes, I guess, technically no NCAA tournament games for Hidoka Azubuki, but because the individual accomplishments and stats stuff count, he does have NCAA tournament stats, but technically doesn't have any NCAA tournament wins or game. It's kind of a weird thing there. I don't know how they're going to do the banner thing. I think it'd be funny if they did instead of a banner, you know, normally they have a banner unveiling like the first night of the season. It's like, oh, here's the national championship banner. We're going to unveil it before the game. They should of a banner you know normally they have a banner unveiling like the first night of the season it's like oh here's the national championship banner we're gonna unveil it before the game they should do a banner veiling they should like you know white it out or have somebody
Starting point is 00:10:50 like rip the thing off the banner and throw it to the crowd and then some lucky person has a piece of memorabilia that only one person can have i think they should do something fun like that to kind of mock the ncaa a little bit obviously, like I said, fans still know what happened. You still have the shirts and stuff. So celebrate how you want to celebrate. And, you know, I will continue to recognize the KU made the 2018 Final Four, and I don't care. And, you know, honestly, if you went back in time and said, listen, you can play Silvio De Sousa the second half of the year
Starting point is 00:11:19 and you knew the result was going to be you can have a Final Four with Silvio De Sousa, but it's later going to get taken away. Or you can just never make the final four because I don't think they do make the final four if they don't have Silvio. I think I'm taking the one where I get to see them make a final four and beat Duke in the process in the Elite Eight, even knowing that in the future
Starting point is 00:11:37 it's going to get taken away. But that's just me. All right, that's going to do it for this episode of Locked on Jayhawks. You can find us wherever you get any of your podcasts. You can find us on our YouTube page, or you can like and subscribe to the show.
