Starting point is 00:00:00 Is this the last chance for some of the young guys, some of the players like Col Rosario and Jaden Dawson, to prove themselves before the start of Big 12 play that they deserve more minutes. Breaking down KU Davidson. You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on Podcast Network,
Starting point is 00:00:25 your team every day. What's going on? here. This is Locked on Jayhawks. Thanks for making it your first lesson every day. We are part of the Locked on podcast network, now the number one sports podcast network. And on today's edition of the show, we're breaking down Kansas versus Davidson, why it is still an important game for KU, even though it's not as high up. You don't see a ranking next to Davidson's name. Still going to serve a purpose heading into Big 12 play. Plus we'll get into our scouting reporter Davidson, players to watch for both teams and the Kansas keys to not just winning, but I guess
Starting point is 00:00:57 dominating, covering the spread in this one. Today's episode of the show is brought to you by Fandual Sportsbook. If you want to be right in the middle of the action this season, visit Fandwell.com and place all your NFL live bets all season long. All right, so KU takes on Davidson little, I can't call it Big Monday. Not quite a big Monday. But it is a Monday, and it is a game, last game for KU before the Christmas break. It's also the last game for KU before Big 12 play. And I think that's where this one gets really interesting for KU is this is kind of your final tune-up.
Starting point is 00:01:28 Now, you can't overlook the game. Davidson beat KU in the Sprint Center about a decade and a half ago, you know? You can't overlook it completely. We've seen some other games that have been closer than you would expect for the last game for KU before Christmas, where maybe you're looking ahead to the Christmas break. You're looking forward to getting home and getting some of your mom's home cooking. And you're just, you're not fully focused on the game. And the game ends up being closer and you have to make some plays later or maybe you even lose in the game before the end of the break.
Starting point is 00:01:57 So like from that standpoint, it's true. But you want to finish out the 2025 calendar year strong. You want to finish the non-conference strong. It's almost more so that like you can't afford a loss like this when you look at the difficulty of Big 12 play and how many loseable games are coming up just because of how difficult the conference is, especially with Darren Peterson's status up in the air to where if you were to go 10 and 8 in conference play and you lose a game like this, all of a sudden you're sitting at 12 losses going into the Big 12 tournament.
Starting point is 00:02:26 and one of the losses are a loss that you're like, oh, man, how did you lose the Davidson, right? So it's just you want to avoid that accrual of losses and that, I guess, negative ding that would come to your resume. That's a big part of this as well. And ideally this is an opportunity. And maybe one of the last ones this year. I mean, if things go right for KU,
Starting point is 00:02:50 you'd have a couple games during Big 12 play that you're able to win with ease. you'd have a couple games that you're winning where you're able to get some of the younger guys or get some of the guys who are more on the borderline of the rotation, extra minutes. Like that'll be the ideal situation, but you can't bank on that in Big 12th play. And so this becomes the last known commodity, as long as you take care of business, for the younger guys, for the guys on the fringe of the rotation, to kind of get more playing time and take advantage of it to show that, hey, I deserve more playing time, or this deserves looking more into playing more,
Starting point is 00:03:25 if I practice well after this too, that I can perform on the court. And to that notion, I think everybody would love to see at least one of Jaden Dawson or Cole Rosario play well. You look at both these players. With Dawson, it's interesting because he started to kind of ascend in the rotation. I think he played 28 minutes in the Duke game.
Starting point is 00:03:45 He had played 20 plus minutes in a couple games in a row. And then he suffers the injury where he's trying to dunk it and warmups at the player's era. hurts his wrist, has to miss, the rest of the players there, a tournament. And then we've never really seen him recapture his spot in the rotation from then on. It's more spot minutes. And, you know, he hasn't really had a big game sense. When you look at Cole Rosario, he's somebody who began the season as a starter.
Starting point is 00:04:08 He's somebody who, you know, during the offseason chatter had a lot of potential and hype. And you would see different draft accounts for NBA draft Twitter or, you know, listen to different NBA draft stuff or read different draft stories about how Cole Rosario could be a sleeper to watch in either the 2026 or the 2027 draft. And there were some moments and plays from Missouri earlier in the season, but it never really fully came together. And then eventually when he fell out of the starting lineup to Jamari McDowell in the players era tournament, it just hasn't gotten back to the point that you would want it to with him.
Starting point is 00:04:44 And I think the biggest thing there, it almost feels mental of like, is he rushing? Is he feeling the pressure a little bit? Like you just haven't seen him look comfortable. from three. It's not just that the threes haven't gone in at a super high percentage for somebody that you were expecting to be one of your better shooters on the it. It's the fact of how often uncomfortable some of them have looked, right? Like sometimes there are certain guys where it's like, and it's funny because there are certain guys where they're like 40% three point
Starting point is 00:05:09 shooters, which statistically tells you they are still missing more than they are making, but you feel like it's going to go in every time. It's the same thing like if you're watching baseball, there are certain players where they're like, they're hitting like 310. And it feels like they're going to get a hit every time they're up to bat. It's like statistically, that doesn't make sense. Like they're getting out still way more than they're getting hits. But you just get that feeling in the bad. And with Rosario, it's almost the opposite right now.
Starting point is 00:05:33 It's like it's going up and it's missing like a big amount. And maybe this opportunity, I mean, there's been some other ones and they haven't been that, but can serve as a little bit of a confidence booster for him if he can have a big game, hit a couple threes because sure, it wouldn't hurt too if like a Marco Jackson did well because we haven't seen him have really a big scoring game since. I guess it was the Tennessee players era game. And then he had that run of scoring in the Yukon game. But since then we haven't really seen it.
Starting point is 00:06:00 Like, sure, it'd be nice to see that again from El Marco. It'd be nice to see a little bit more of Samis Calderon. We saw a little bit of him. They've extended run in the last game, you know, get him more reps and opportunity because I like his athleticism. But to me, those are the two guys, Dawson or Rosario. Because I think once we get to Big 12 play, and especially in the games that the matter the most,
Starting point is 00:06:17 the close games, and as the season continues, continues to wind. What is Bill's off going to do to the rotation? He's going to tighten it. And when you look at him tightening the rotation, it doesn't always work this way, right? If he has, if he has nine capable players, it'll be an eight man with a ninth man and spot minutes. But there are some years where it's a six or seven man rotation where the spot minutes are going to the seventh or eighth guy, where it's basically, hey, we have our starting five. We have a bench guard. We have a bench center. And then our eighth man playing spot minutes is maybe just somebody who's going to come in and try to make a stop for us or is going to hit a three. they're basically going to be a specialized role.
Starting point is 00:06:50 And I think right now it'd be easy to look at it and say, okay, if we're looking at it when Darren Peterson is healthy, you'd say, okay, counsel, Peterson, as you're starting back court, White Tiller and Badunga is kind of your wings in front court as the starters. Your guard off the bench in that situation ends up being O'Marco and your big off the bench kind of just ends up being the other of Florey or Tiller. And then your seventh man actually ends up being, I guess, one of, you know, Cole Rosario or Jaden Dawson.
Starting point is 00:07:20 I feel like I'm missing somebody. But anyway, and then your spot minutes guy is maybe Paul and Bia, just as if you need another big, right? And it feels like to me one of those two, Dawson or Rosario is going to end up winning the job. And that might come in February or whatever, but like instead of in a specific game where Dawson plays seven minutes and Rosario plays five,
Starting point is 00:07:40 I think once we get later and later into the year, it's just going to be 12 to one guy. So that becomes interesting too. but also just from a standpoint of like Bill Self ain't going to stop the train for you. Like if the train's going and you're not ready to get on, he ain't going to stop it for you. At the same point in time, it would be really beneficial for KU if they figured a way to get on the train. One of those guys. Because KU still, when you don't have Darren Peterson in the lineup or when Melvin Council's not shooting like Steph Curry from three,
Starting point is 00:08:13 there still are questions about the three-point shooting of this team. And so it would really behoove KU, who would benefit KU, if at least one of those guys was at least a 10, 12, 15 minute player on this team that can consistently hit shots and give you a little bit more of that over the course of the game. So that becomes a key storyline in this game. Another storyline, if you heard this one before, will Darren Peterson play? Who knows? Questionable is the short answer on that one.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And I guess we'll wait and see. But overall, we've seen some of these games, as I've kind of alluded to before, be closer than comfort for KU in the final game. game before break. Harvard a few years ago, yeah, I think you ended up winning that one by 14. There's like a six point game, like the under eight in that one. And then KU hit a run to end of winning. KU only beat Stephen F. Austin by eight points in 2021. And that took Remy Martin, hitting some big shots for KU. KU got crushed by Temple. I remember that one. That was road ones a little bit different there, but 2015. You also lost, albeit this is also very different
Starting point is 00:09:10 because it's on the road against, you know, power level opponents at Villanova and Arizona State recently. But like point B. we've seen some of these games not go well for KU so take it seriously and for the younger guys or the guys on the fringe of the rotation, take advantage of this because you don't know how many more of these games you're going to have those opportunities
Starting point is 00:09:27 to try to prove yourself on the floor. And last year they blasted Brown, so maybe that'll carry over and they'll pick up another easy one over Davidson. But a team that can shoot, let's get into that Davidson scouting report, ways that they could stretch KU. This episode of,

Starting point is 00:11:16 by Matt McKillop. He's in his fourth season, looking for his best team after going 48 and 49 in his first three years. And they're off to a good start, eight and three this year, top 130 rating on both Ken Palm and Bart Torvick. They've been four teams between 100 and 200 ranked on Ken Palm, Washington State, and they blew him out by 16, Boston College by 10. So those are two solid wins for mid-major school. And the losses have come to pretty good teams. Utah State is a top 30 team on Ken Palm. Now, they did lose that one by 34, so that's not great. They had a nine point loss. That's not bad to a top 40 St. Mary's squad. And then their most recent game was their worst loss.
Starting point is 00:11:53 They lost to Temple, who's ranked around 150 by five at home. You look at the strengths of Davidson. Shooting and spacing is one of them. I don't know how much of it is like on ball compared to off ball. I feel like more of it is kind of off ball. But overall, they're shooting 48% as a team, 84th percentile nationally. So Kayu needs to be good with their off ball defense and marking shooters. they're in the 74th percentile and two-point percentage, 90th percentile and three-point
Starting point is 00:12:19 percentage, they just do it all over the floor. They are 51 percent in the floater area, 45 percent in the mid-range, 35 percent on corner threes, and 39 percent on above the break threes. All of those are good percentages from those different zones. Overall, you wrap it up into one big package. They're in the 79th percentile, true shooting percentage, 85th percentile, ineffective field goal percentage. So very good shooting team.
Starting point is 00:12:42 They do it well off ball. and they're able to, you know, get easy shots inside sometimes because you have to put so much devotion to guarding the perimeter from three and then, boom, they end up with a back cut or, you know, there's nobody protecting the rim and you dribble by someone and get an easy layup. They're also a solid passing team, 69th percentile in the country and assist to turnover rate. Also a good defensive rebounding team, 68th percentile in the country and defensive rebounding rates. They have good positioning there.
Starting point is 00:13:11 They also get to the free throw line, which is something you don't always see for a team who is going to be good at jump shooting and doesn't necessarily take the most shots at the rim, but they're 72nd percentile in free throw attempt rate. Again, kind of odd considering the profile of the team, but it is something they've done a good job at. Four weaknesses for Davidson, they don't score on fast break.
Starting point is 00:13:29 They're in the eighth percentile nationally in fast break points per game. So they're not a team who really wants to speed it up. They do want to play a little bit slower. It'll be kind of similar to KU's last, honestly, where they're playing a mid-major who wants to slow it down a bit. And Towson, just very different. Towson more team that we want to pound the rock inside. Davidson, one that more so wants to get an open shot from three. They don't score a ton inside. Again, they're efficient inside because a lot of
Starting point is 00:13:53 the times when they're getting a two to take, it is a wide open two. It's somebody over-relied on guarding the three ball and it led somebody wide open inside. So they're going to shoot high on them. They're just not going to take a ton of them, right? It's almost like a football team who's really, really good at passing. And they're only going to run the ball 10 times a game. So the defense isn't really going to worry about it. They're averaging six yards of carry. They're just not doing it as much. So it's like something that can be a problem for you, but it's not a ton. They're just in the 30th percentile in paint points per game. They also don't really cause a lot of havoc on the defensive end of the floor. They rate out kind of below average in steel and block rate. And then defending
Starting point is 00:14:32 inside has not been a strength for them. They have given up a 65 and a half percent field goal percentage at the rim this season, that puts them in the 27th percentile there. So not very good. And they're not much better in the paint area, kind of that floater range where they're in the 19th percentile. So not a great team defending inside the paint. I think you look at all this and say, okay, they're not a team who runs. They shoot the ball well.
Starting point is 00:14:55 They struggle a bit defending inside. They're good at positioning with rebounding. They don't cause a lot of havoc. A lot of that would lead me to believe that it's probably not going to be the most athletic team that you play against, especially coming from a mid-major. but well-coached, well-drilled, do a lot of little things, hit shots, things like that. Players to watch here, for Kansas, let's go with Melvin Council,
Starting point is 00:15:16 over 13 points per game, almost five assists per game, over four rebounds. He's up to 35% from a three-point range. I know it's obviously the 36-point game that sticks out at NC State and deservedly so. Low-key, I don't know that people realize how consistent Melvin Council has been this season because he has now scored double-digit points in seven of the last eight games. And the one game where he didn't score double-digit points in the seven of the last eight, he had nine. So he's been a really consistent fueler, that's not a word, but, you know, somebody who drives this Kansas offense.
Starting point is 00:15:50 And then Cole Rosario is the other one. I mentioned earlier in the show. We talked a lot about it, the Rosario, Doss and stuff. I want to see one of those guys at least step up. Be great of both, right? But I'm looking at Rosario because I think Kansas can be successful. Like I said, Bill Self ain't going to, the train's going to go. If you're not ready to get on the train, then the five minutes it stops at your destination.
Starting point is 00:16:07 he's going to go. And if Col Rosario is not ready, he's not going to be a part of the rotation, and that's fine. Because, you know, I'm not saying that you just play him just to play him. If he's not good enough,
Starting point is 00:16:18 like that's part of it, right? But the ideal situation is Rosario is good enough, and Rosario is bringing to the table what KU needs, three-point shooting, athleticism, all these sorts of things, getting steals, getting offensive rebounds.
Starting point is 00:16:31 He can provide a lot of that if he is to the level that you're hoping him to be. And so I'd like to see him take advantage of a game like this, right? Because maybe this helps, especially if Peterson's out, maybe more minutes to be had around, which we'll wait and see kind of on that one. If Peterson's back, he is the other player to watch because it's Darren Peterson. But, you know, I want to see him be able to take advantage of that, right? And set yourself up that you have
Starting point is 00:16:53 Bill Self thinking twice about the rotation, come Big 12 play, that, okay, we'll give you a little extra chance. And then maybe you can take advantage of that chance in Big 12 play. And then, you know, maybe that turns into more playing time later in the year. And if Rosario has one of the higher ceilings on the team, it'd be nice to actualize that, but you got to do it on the court. Okay, for Davidson, this is interesting because in picking a player to watch for the Wildcats, they don't have a single player who scores 11 or more points per game. That's wild, right? But the flip to that is they have six players who score eight or more points per game.
Starting point is 00:17:23 They have eight players who score five or more points per game, and they're in the 98th percentile and bench scoring. So I'm going to know with Hunter Adam here. He is only playing 16 minutes per game. Why am I picking this dude? he's a flame thrower. So again, only 16 minutes per game, but he's averaging 9.1 points per game.
Starting point is 00:17:39 He's shooting 57% from the field and a bonkers 51% from 3-point range where he is 21 of 41 on the season. He's got the second most attempts on the team from 3. He's got the most makes on the team from 3. You got to mark him off the catch and off the ball, especially playing 16 minutes per game. You don't necessarily see him all the time.
Starting point is 00:17:57 And then boom, he comes in off the bench. And it's like, wait, who's this guy? And then boom, he hits two straight threes. And you're like, oh, well, that's swung the game. And then the other one is, I think it's pronounced Plateau. I don't know. Ian Plateau is a seven foot center from Spain, not a ton of size necessarily on Davidson. He represents that, though, being seven feet tall, 5.6 points per game.
Starting point is 00:18:16 Not the best scorer, not the most efficient score, but he does a lot of other things well. 4.8 rebounds per game. He's good rebounder that leads the team. 3.0 assists per game. That leads the team. So a good passer. He's doing both those in 18.6 minutes per game. He's coming off 9.6 rebounds in that last Temple game in 20.
Starting point is 00:18:33 24 minutes. He's somebody who will be interesting because we saw Duke do this with Patrick Gongba, their center who like to, you know, kind of facilitate the offense from the top of the key as a center passing around. How does KU do against it? Because Davidson will do that too here with their seven footer and plateau. Let's get to our keys of the game for KU, play your matchup, Hawks the Soar, all that next. Today's episode of the show is brought to you by game time. There's nothing like college football season. And we are in the playoffs. So if you're around in an area where you're, you want to go to a playoff game, get them with game time.
Starting point is 00:19:06 But maybe you're also looking to go to a KU basketball game, right? Maybe you're actually looking to go to this game against Davidson. Well, you can get tickets for the game over on game time. And the cool thing about game time is you can see the picture of the seat view before you buy it, so you know exactly what you're getting into. Now, as you probably know, Allenfield, that's all the seats are great. So maybe it doesn't come into play as much here. But if you're going to a road trip, right, you want to see KU play on the road,
Starting point is 00:19:31 you want to go to one of these big 12 schools, Maybe you're trying to do a bucket list where you say, hey, I want to go to a visiting road venue every year. And eventually we're going to see all the different big 12 road environments. And you might not know what the stadium has to offer. Well, you can see those pictures and see what you're getting into game time. Take the guesswork out of buying college basketball or college football tickets at game time. And if you are listening with your family and they're like, oh, we got to listen to this Locked on Jayhawks, Derek Johnson thing again.
Starting point is 00:20:30 I apologize, but also thank you for. deep down in my heart. Okay, keys to the game for Kansas. Let's start with this. Keep speeding it up. That was something KU did really well last game is, and we heard it from Bill Self before last game against Towson that he wanted them to play faster. And boy, did they emphasize that early in the game. They were sprinting up the floor. It was quick passes all around. Slowed down a little as the game went on, but that was with the score earlier in the game in the first half and maybe even the start of the second half, they were doing a really good job of that. Now, you look at Davidson. they're in the fifth percentile in unadjusted pace rating.
Starting point is 00:21:06 So they are one of the slower teams in the country. They don't necessarily get out in transition. Again, I think this is important for KU try to speed it up as much as possible against a team who does want to slow it down. And then I would also say this, like if you're going to play fast, you need to do a good job still of taking care of the ball. And especially as we looked at this being the last game before Christmas break, it could be easy to overlook it against a lesser opponent. Avoid the slop, so to speak. Avoid the game slop. the turnovers, especially if you're doing all these things,
Starting point is 00:21:35 that's how you end up in a closer game than you expect, right? You have 16 turnovers at, you know, three minutes to go and it's a four-point game and you need to, right? You don't want that to happen. On the defensive side of the ball for KU, defend off ball and the three ball. Some of these things come together because some of the three balls will obviously be off-guard or off-ball, but don't give up a bunch of back cuts as well, right? That's just getting you sliced on easy to, as we saw.
Starting point is 00:21:58 I think KU earlier in the season was having some trouble. defending some backcuts, but I think that was an earlier in the season thing where you're still trying to get to know each other playing together. I think you've done a better job of it as the season's gone on, but it is something to still kind of keep an eye on this one. And I think I look back to the Yukon game where like, KUKU did a really good job switching against Yukon. Yukon hit some shots late in the game where, you know, was them hitting a mid-range shot or them hitting a contested shot or them just getting offensive rebounds that led to an open shot. But like, overall, K you did a really good job defending Yukon and their, I don't know, spacing ability and
Starting point is 00:22:30 shooting ability. Can you have that same focus and defensive mentality in this one? If so, I think you'll be okay. But if not, Davidson could hit 10 or 12 threes, right? And then you also need to fight through screens, whether it's on or off ball when needed. Those would be the defensive keys for KU. Play your matchup for Kansas. We're going to go with Josh Scovens against Bryson Tiller and Trey White. Obviously, Trey White will play the four when KU is going small. Bryson Tiller will play the four when KU is going big. Scovens is leading Davidson and points per game, 10 and a half points per game. He is over four rebounds per game. He is a six-foot powerful 230-pound kind of wing forward type. He's, again, they're leading
Starting point is 00:23:10 score. And you look at if he's going up against Trey White, White has been one of KU's best players. He's been a great addition for Kansas. And if Peterson's out, he takes on a bigger load. If it's against Tiller, we just saw Tiller have a really good game against Towson. And in the same vein of like, you want to see Rosario and Dawson and some of these guys step up. You want to see Bryson Tiller step up because Tiller had a great start to the year, hit a bit of a rut, then had a good last game. You want to see Tiller carry that over. I think very highly of Bryson Tiller, right? Get a good streak going, headed into Big 12 play. Have another good game here where you're looking at back-to-back good games heading into conference play. I think that
Starting point is 00:23:44 would be nice for KU. Plus, when you're looking at Tiller, take advantage of your size of here, right? You're going to be guarded by a six-foot-six dude, and he is powerful. He's a good player, but take advantage of that. Go get some offense of rebounds. Go work them in the post. Then we look at our hawk to soar here. We're going to go with Flory Bedunga. So outside of plateau, Davidson doesn't have a ton of size. Like they still do have some dudes like 6-9 and stuff. But I think Florey out-athletes plateau is the thing,
Starting point is 00:24:09 even though he's actually given up some size to plateau. I don't know about wingspan, though. And when Peterson's been out of games throughout the season, Flory has really been a go-to for KU and the half-courts. That becomes important. Florey's coming off a good game. I think Florey can really out-athlete this Davidson front line. Go have a game where you.
Starting point is 00:24:25 have like 15 rebounds, you know. So I think Flory can have a big game, and that'll be my prediction here. The key is going to be Flory on the defensive end against the team who wants to space you out. I thought you did a good job against Duke, but he also got in foul trouble. So it'll be interesting how that one goes here against Davidson. I thought it'll do it for this episode of Lockdown Jayhawks.
