KU defense might be for real.
Jalen Daniels is back.

Today's episode of Locked on Jayhawks.
We're going to be breaking down more from the KU football win over Fresno State.
Biggest takeaways from the game as it pertains to the defense.
Jalen Daniels, the offensive line, plenty more coming out.
We'll also get to our goats of the game, the good and bad goats.
We'll explain that if you're new to the show.
And then some altered season-long predictions based on getting a little bit more game evidence in week zero for the game.
game. Before we're getting to any of that, today's episode of the show is brought to you by
Fanduel. Hopefully you made a little cash on the game beyond KU's performance. Today's
episode is brought to you by Fandual football seasons around the corner, officially here for us,
visit the Fandual app today and start planning your future bets now because Future's Day is
coming up on August 26th. Okay, so biggest takeaways from this game for me, I think
the number one takeaway has to be, I mean, anytime you involve the quarterback, like that's
going to be a thing. Jalen Daniels feels back. And you could technically say Jailen
Daniels was back over the last half of last season. But even then, even when it felt back,
it still felt like you were leaning on Devin Neal and Jalen was making some Jalen plays, but also
like there weren't like huge amounts of stats. And I guess from a yardage perspective, it was not a
huge stack game from Jalen Daniels, 176 yards. But when you look at the yards per attempt,
the 176 over the 20 attempts, when you look at the rushing yards added on for Jalen with 47 more rushing
yards, when you look specifically to having more touchdown passes than he had incompletions, you
easily wind up with the situation, or yes, it was a very, very impressive performance by Jalen Daniels.
You look at the pro football focus grade was above a 90 for JD. You look at the ESPN total QBR,
which was an 87, which is first among all quarterbacks that played this past weekend in week zero.
And you just watched the game, the timing throws he had. I mean, I made big mention in the recap
of that throw to Levi Wentz on kind of in breaking route. I don't know if it was just play action or an
RPO or what, but like Jalen and the KU offense did not exploit the middle of the field and
the intermediate zone of the field as well last year as they did in previous seasons.
And they were able to do that more in this game.
And so just a comfortability, too, of having receivers.
I mean, how many plays did KU run for Manuel Henderson and Cam Pickett that were just
easy throws for Jalen or screen passes, that they made something happen after the catch?
That's something this receiving core has, that they're going to be able to help this offense,
enhance Jalen Daniel's game, but also the things we're used to seem from Jalen, the
escapability.
I mean, how many times did he run out of a sack and either get a big scramble or get a
throw down field or just avoid a sack in general, was really impressive from Jalen that
it looked like the guy that we're used to.
I think part of that is Jalen having, you know, summer to throw to the receivers.
I think part of that is just another year of progression with Jailen.
I think part of that is having Jim Zabrowski back as, well, not back, but as the
offense coordinator now, Matt Lubick back as well, where you feel just more comfortable
if you're Jalen with what you're doing.
And so from that perspective, I do think Jalen Daniels is back, right?
And that's the other thing that cool that you can take away from this game.
This isn't just beating down an FCS opponent where you're extrapolating things against
like, sure, Fresno State's not a team that's expected to win the Mountain West,
but like are they a team that's probably going to make a bowl game and it's going to be a decent,
you know, Mountain West team?
Like, yeah, they probably are.
And so from that perspective, you know, this is something where like,
if KU really wanted to, it felt like last night they could have won by 40 or 50 points,
kind of called the dogs off in the second half.
The other big takeaway, and part of the reason that was the case, is the defense.
I think Michael Swain tweeted out that KU's defense after the first drive, like the first drive
of the game, you're kind of walking away like, oh, no, like, what's going on here?
Like, you know, Fresas would say it's getting good push.
They're able to do this.
From that point on, they only average 2.7 yards per play.
That is elite of the elite.
And so I'm not going to sit here and say that KU's defense is all of a sudden an elite unit.
like maybe they will end up being and that would be awesome if that is the case but i am
definitively going to say one of my takeaways from this game is the k u defense is improved
from where they were last season and um i am a little like i don't know cautious i guess that if
you do remember last year the k u defense played really well at the start of last season um obviously
that didn't carry over to the fourth quarter like the end of games like
illinois game played very well but then you give up the the the kind of drives at the
end of the games. I think you're outscored like 10-0 in the fourth.
You know a V game. You give up the big drive at the end of the game.
The West Virginia game played pretty well, and then you just couldn't stop them in the last
two drives the game. So it's not new that the defense is playing well at the beginning
of a game, but even then giving up seven to Fresno is a whole other level, I guess.
It does, to me, it feels like this is going to be improved unit. And again, how much are
we talking improvement? Are we talking there top 25 unit, a top 40 unit, a top 50 unit? I don't
know, but I think this is going to be the best defense of Lance Lightboldair.
after that first drive, defensive line was as advertised, and that was without Dean Miller.
I don't think they had a great necessarily like pass rush game.
They were able to get there a couple times, but like I don't think it was like an overwhelming
pass rush game.
I don't think it was a bad game.
I just don't think it was a great game either, but it was without Dean Miller.
Dean Miller is your all big 12 second team performer who's supposed to be your best pass rusher.
So theoretically, you add Dean Miller to the fold, makes everything easier, makes life easier
on every other player too, right?
Because he's going to get more attention, going to make life easier for
lot of the other players.
And so considering that, in addition to what they did, especially stopping the run,
really liked what we saw from the defensive line.
I thought you saw the athleticism from the linebackers in a very real way.
When you look at, I mean, Trey Lathen had kind of a quiet eight tackles, like in a very
positive way there.
Bengali Kamara flashed, he had four tackles.
I mean, you get 12 tackles, two and a half TFLs between those two linebackers.
And then you're also, you know, kind of rotating in other guys, too.
We saw like a play from John John Kamara.
really like the defense overall in this game, and there's going to be time you should give up passing plays.
But like overall, Fresno State averaged 6.2 yards per attempt.
That's not like a big number.
That's in fact on the lower end of things overall.
So overall, the DBs held up in a real way for KU.
There were no like big coverage busts necessarily.
I mean, I think there might have been like one where guy was wide open, but that also is kind of the beginning of the season.
I mean, the other ones were just okay.
maybe they just made like decent throws of the middle and like he was immediately tackled like
you're going to have to live with those you're not going to have every pass be incomplete so
I thought the defense was as advertised I think once you had dean miller to the mix too like
obviously part of the other question is going to be the attrition over the course of season I think
that you know injuries have slowed down last defense last year's defense over the back
half from what it was in the first half but I do think this this team is deeper on the defensive end than
they were last year that if that does happen,
they'll be in better shape than maybe they were last year.
My other big takeaway, though, and this one's not as positive,
is I don't know how ready the offensive line is.
Now, I don't know that, I mean,
you lost a lot from last year's team.
You look at the pass block and run block grades on pro football focus,
64.1 on pass blocking, 65.2, and run blocking is a team.
Among the nine FBS teams that played in week zero,
the run block or the past blocking, sorry, at 64.1 ranked fourth, but it was third among power
four teams. And then the run blocking grade for KU of 65.2 actually ranked third. So it's
average above average based on who played. Now that said, that was a very small sample size of
who played. And if you're looking at like last year numbers of like to comparing if they finished
with those on the season, how would they compare to last year's? It does end up being more to the
middle of the pack to the lower end middle of the pack. So I don't think it was great.
game for the office line. I do think they'll get better. It's new units that's meshing
together that's that's getting to know each other. They're going to get better over the course
of season, right? You're going to start to settle in on what guys you want. I don't know that this
is going to be like you look at some of the PFF pass and run blocking grades from the last
couple years. They've consistently though been top 10, top 25 in some of those areas. I don't think
they're going to be that dominant this year. I think the question more so just comes for me because it felt
like Jalen Daniels took a lot of hits. That's the biggest one. Can you avoid Jalen Daniels getting a
beating can you keep him healthy for the season right that is obviously the biggest one above all beyond
that can you just be an average unit right and maybe it's okay if you're not as elite as the unit was
two years ago or last year because you don't have a dominic puny or logan brown or bryce cable do
is kind of manning your tackles as these elite players like maybe calvin clements will be an elite
player but maybe it'll just take some time right he's in his first year starting um the question
kind of just becomes to me yeah can you just be average and okay they where you're not a problem
where you're not causing injuries, where you're not, you know, just getting beat up when
you're playing some of the better defensive lines.
That'll be the big question.
Usually the biggest improvements on teams is from week one to week two.
I'm very interested to see if the offensive line can have a dominant performance against
an FCS team in week two because you're going to need to tighten it up week three, or I guess
week two, but your third game against Missouri.
They've got a really, really good defense and a really good defensive line.
So that'll be the real test to see how much they improved over these next couple of weeks.
Let's get to our goats of the game for KU Fresno State that next.
This is Locked on Jayhawks.

Get ready for week one, but also look back at what happened in week zero and some of the
biggest takeaways.
I'm sure plenty of positives from Spencer on how Kay you looked in this win over Fresno State.
All right, go to the game.
If you're new to the show or new to this segment, we do the old version of goats and the
new version of goats.
The old version, when I was growing up, like if you were a goat, that was a bad thing, man.
Like you were the, you were the sacrifice.
You were the guy that everybody was like, ah, that's not great.
The new age of the word goat is greatest of all time, acronym for that, right?
So we have our good goats and our bad goats.
Our good goats, let's get so.
I mean, we mentioned Jaylon Daniels at the outset.
I don't need to go much deeper into it other than it was a very impressive performance for Jalen Daniels in the end.
And we talked about throwing over the middle for Jalen Daniels.
That last year with Jeff Grimes, there just wasn't it wasn't sympathical.
It wasn't cohesive with KU throwing over the middle and exploiting that as much as it was with Andy Cole and like you.
Well, Jalen Daniels in this first game over the middle third of the field.
And if we don't want to count the throws from behind the line scrimmage, we just want to count zero and on yards forward over the
middle of the field. He was 10 for 10 for 98 yards with one touchdown, no interceptions.
Now, if we want to count the ones from behind the line of scrimmage as well,
you'd add on another four for four with 45 yards to touch on. So overall, the middle third
of the field, Jalen Daniels in the first game, 14 of 14 for, you know, over 140 yards
with three touchdowns, no picks. That'll get it done and that'll get it done for Kansas moving
forward. So really impressive to see there for Jaylon Daniels. So he gets a good goat.
Honestly, Jim Zabrowski, Matt Lubick, they get good goats as well for making the offense look as
it did.
Kim Pickett, I think it's a good goat here.
I mean, statistically, he obviously had a big game.
Six catches, 77 yards, two touchdowns.
45 of that came after the catch, ended up with an 81 PFF grade.
We talked a lot about in the preseason leading it up his yard after catch ability.
That showed itself in the first game for KU.
I want to give Lashon Williams a good goat here, too.
I mean, you could give the combination of High Shaw and Williams.
I mean, high shot would probably get one to 5.3 yards per carry.
Williams, though, was wound up even more effective in terms of yards per carry.
Six carries for 57 yards and a touchdown there.
But, yeah, I mean, the total of those two plus Jalen running, yet over 200 rushing yards.
Isaiah Marshall contributed to that too.
That was kind of cool Johnny Thompson as well.
But, yeah, Hyshawn Williams, get you a good goat there.
I think on the tight end game, you know, you think of Deshaunica dropping that first patch,
which he fell for him because there's his first game since 2022.
Wound up with two catches for 17 yards.
That first catch he had was really impressive.
He actually wound up with really good run block grades on PFF as well.
Only 20 snaps, but a 76.6 run block grade.
So we'll give Deshaan Hanukkah just for the fact, I mean,
making it back off an Achilles injury, playing the first game in the next season,
his first game since 2022 makes a couple catches, has a good run block grade.
I think that deserves a strong, a good goat here on the offensive end of the ball
for him. I actually want to give one to Carson Brun as well. And
Brun had one catch for three yards, but he wound up with a 76 PFF grade, 71 in
pass block, 81 in run block, which was the second best run block grade for KU player.
Here's a fun little fact. Who is first? Emmanuel Henderson at 88.1. That's going to keep getting
him the football if he continues to run block like that. But interestingly enough, if we look at
the tight end usage for KU, Carson Bruin led Kansas in tight
and snaps with 30 of them. Bowden Grown was second at 21, Deshawn Hanukkah and third at 20.
Part of that was because Hanukkah comes out of the game because of the score the way it is,
but that's really impressive to see Boone's usage already to this point in time.
Best pass blocker in the game for KU was Kobe Baines. He did have two penalties.
KU needs to clean up the penalties on the offensive line.
If we want to do a quick bad go, penalties on the offense line is one of them.
But Kobe Baines actually had an 84 pass block, only a 56 and a half run block.
So if we're doing good goats for pass block for Kobe Baines, that would certainly be up there.
but not as much from the run-blocking perspective necessarily.
Calvin Clements had a 67.6.
That's the best of any of the KU offense linemen in the first game.
So we'll give him a good goat as well.
Moving to the defensive side of the ball for KU,
I was really good from a stat perspective like Trey Lathen certainly jumps out.
He would get a good goat as well on the PFF grade, 75 defensive grade,
89 and run defense.
Devin Dye had that nice interception.
He gets a good goat.
He also ended up with a 90 PFF grade,
88 in coverage in 19 snaps.
Bengali Kamara really flashed, four tackles.
He had an 85 PFF grade.
He gets a good goat there.
And then Alex Bray was impressive.
Pass rush was really good.
78 PFF grade.
He wound up, I think, with one and a half TFLs for the game for KU.
He was really impressive.
So he gets a good goat.
Looking at some of the coverage guys like Jalen Todd had a 71 coverage grade.
So that was solid.
Lyric Rawls, we mentioned him.
He had five tackles.
He had a really impressive interception.
71 pff grade he gets a good goat
Keenan Caldwell 70 and a half
PFF grade really impressive in the run
flashing a lot of ways Leroy Harris
at a 70 and a half PFF grade had two pressures
and a sack so all those guys
I think get good goats in this one for KU
Now as far as some of the bad goats like what went wrong
for KU we mentioned some of the offensive line penalties
they get two from Enrique Cruz two from Kobe
Baines two from a mere herring
so that's six on the offensive line
so that's too much from what KU needs
in a given game
Also, the run blocking, not great for the KU offensive line.
Like, you look at so, okay, Clemens at a 64, which that's fine.
Cruz at a 62.
And then you start getting into some bad numbers for the KU offensive line run blocking.
59.7 for Bryce Foster, one of your starters there.
Let's see.
Who else played big snaps?
Kobe Baines was only a 56.5.
Nolan Gorsica played 17 steps, only a 49.6.
So they're going to need to figure out the run blocking there for KU.
So that gets some of the bad goats specifically there.
And overall, Amir Herring had just a 51 overall grade, just a 24-and-pass block.
So that would get a bad goat.
I was excited to see him start, and maybe he just needs more experience, right?
It was his first start after coming over from Michigan.
Or does it open the door for Tavaki, Tuigolo Vatu, or James Livingston, or somebody for take down that spot?
But you're going to need him to pick it up from what you saw in that first game.
On the defensive side of the ball, interestingly enough, I mean, Tommy Dunn was actually the lowest rated on PFF, but I think he's still going to have a good season.
Justice Finkley had two pressures, but had one of the lower PFF grade.
So you want to see that kind of come up for KU.
As far as who gave up the most receptions, Jalen Todd did give up three receptions, but again, he had a good PFF grade.
They were all short catches, 19 total yards on the three.
The most yards allowed by KU in coverage was Bengali Kamar with 47.
on two targets, but that's also partially being a linebacker.
If we want to look at, I don't know, the defense side of the ball,
I guess you would say Tommy Dunn, lowest PFF grade,
he also had a penalty on the defensive side of the ball.
But for all the defense is really good, man, for KU.
So I don't know that I don't want to give any on that regard.
Honestly, you could probably give some good goats to the KU special teams guys as well
with like Tate Nagy and the Kakerunner and Leif Marjohn and Finlap.
And so a lot of names I went over very quickly there.
That's just kind of nature of the beast of winning 31 to 7,
and I wanted to fit in a lot of guys all at once for KU.
So I mentioned them.
There's probably a lot more we could mention,
but overall,
a very impressive debut for Kansas,
and I think it kind of shows up in talking about some of that.
All right.
What are some of the different,
I don't know, season-long predictions
that I might change after seeing the first game.
We'll get to that next.
Today's episode of the show is brought to you by Fandual Sportsbook.

All right, some predictions for the season I might change after seeing what we saw in
week zero one i mean i mentioned it at the outside i think jd6 is going to have a great season for
k u as long as he can say healthy right but we've talked enough about that um we talked a lot about
you know who's going to be the go-to receiver who's going to be the leading receiver is it going
to be camp picket is it going to be ammanuel henderson i had nick springer on earlier this week and
he picked picket i went with henderson after seeing the first game is it enough for me to change
it's honestly not yet um i know this is season predictions i would change um but i did want to address this
one because a lot of the work was done on screens for picket is that going to be always the leading
way for receiver no it's not um i also look at i mentioned henderson's run blocking grade was so
incredible like that's going to keep you on the field in a real way i still am leaning henderson
with his speed but yeah i definitely do feel like okay maybe it could be picket and i'm a little
more open to it even after that first game but certainly i feel like those two will be your top
two for k you i think john john kamara is going to have a bigger role than i was expecting uh this
season for KU. He was impressive and limited snaps. And he just gives Kansas an opportunity
to do a lot of different things defensively. And I think it's going to lead to us feeling like
he's going to have a breakout star season come 2026. So that would be one that I'm kind of looking
at there. I also think like, did we see enough from Kenan Caldwell to be like, okay, you know,
maybe he's going to have a bigger role than you feel like it's those main three with Dunn, Withers,
and Harold. And then he got Caldwell, you got Gage Keys when he's healthy, you got Marcus Calvin.
And maybe Caldwell is closer to those top three guys than expected.
Maybe it ends up being mainly those four and then use keys and rotational and
Calvin and rotational as well.
Maybe that's something that feel wrong about as well.
I also feel like, I don't know that this was something that I wanted, that I got wrong.
Like I thought KU's kicker and punter were going to be good.
I don't know that I was a definitive as this.
So I would like to put this on there.
I think this is going to be the best kicker punter combo that Lance Leipold has had as KU
between Finlap and Leif March on.
I think it's going to be the best combo, right, of those two that he's had at KU.
And that's something that I feel good, kind of bring it up and talking about.
I also think that it's mostly going to be just, you know, you think back to the Andy
Kolden-liki comment, like back when he first started at KU, a pair and a spare.
I think that's very much going to be the way KU operates the running back room with Lashon
Williams, Daniel Hyshaw.
If those two guys are healthy, it's those two, you know.
The third guy's getting in if it's blowout.
Now, maybe Lishon Williams isn't healthy.
He came off with an injury.
So maybe that gets changed up.
but I do think that would be the way the KU wants to specifically operate that for KU.
And then, yeah, I do think if we're talking, you know, I don't know, I guess that would be something else.
Like Carson Bruin, his role in the offense, like could he end up being tight end number one even?
I don't know.
Maybe that's something that we need to be open to moving forward as a possible season-long takeaway from this game.
Maybe the defense is even better than I expected.
Like, I thought the defense is going to be better than it was the season before.
Maybe it's like that's just saying it's better.
something we talked about earlier, like, how much better is it going to be?
Maybe that's not enough.
We're going to learn more about that, specifically, in coming weeks, but it was a great first
test that KU passed with flying colors and got an A all around against Fresno State.
All right, that'll know for this episode of Locked on Jayhawks.
