KU football is up to 11 players departing in the portal.
We heard some interesting stuff from Gage Keys and LJ. Arnold.
Is there something going on that is leading to some transfer departures for KU?
And where does it currently leave the roster overall as we're still a couple weeks from the portal opening up?
You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks.
part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What's going on, Derek Johnson here with Locked on Jayhawks.
Thanks for making Locked on the number one sports podcast network.
And on today's edition of LOJ, we are breaking down the latest KU football
transfer portal losses, which are Millcroft, Logan Brantley,
Greaten Grimes, Lake Juan Robinson.
Overall, where it leaves KU with the number of players lost,
how does it compare to past seasons?
Is it abnormal?
Is it similar?
What about some of the stuff that's been going on on social?
media with, you know, some former KU football players that are speaking not too kindly of some
things. And where does it leave the overall roster at this point for KU getting into all that
on today's episode, which is brought to you by Fandual Sportsbook. If you want to be right in the
middle of the action this season, visit Fandwell.com and place your NFL live bets all season
long. So let's start right here. Since we've last talked about the players who have left the
program for KU, Jamil Croft, Logan Brantley, Graydon Grimes, Lake Juan Robinson. Those are
the newest players to enter into the portal.
You know, on its own, like Grimes is somebody who wasn't expected to be on the
Too Deep this upcoming season.
Lake Juan Robinson is somebody that maybe would have been on the Too Deep as a safety,
but it's more so just because of the bodies they've already kind of lost there.
I think if you're bringing in, you know, some new players there, he might not have been.
And then Logan Brantley is somebody who, especially right now with John John Kamar leaving,
would probably be expected to be on on the two deep as a backup but if you're adding more players
via the portal then maybe he wouldn't be on the two deep and for a player becoming a what redshirt
junior at this point for Brantley makes sense to go elsewhere and look for playing time then you look at
Jamil Croft and it's funny because with Croft it seemed like there was a good start to his career
it seemed like there was a lot of talent that was being shown when they brought him on as a former
highly recruited kind of player from the Detroit area and then it just kind of faded and then
he had that kick return against K State where he steps out at the one yard line and it just
never picked up traction from there. And so none of these guys individually are ones that were
expected to be huge contributors for KU in 2026 and certainly weren't in 2025. Brantley played
a good amount of special team snaps for KU. But outside of that, it's not a ton there. But when
you add it all together now, KU has lost 11 players to the transfer portal. And we're still two weeks
away, right? Like, that's the thing. If 11 ends up being the final number that KU loses in the
portal, that's actually not a bad number at all. And actually looking at some of the past years,
so if we go back to 2022, they lost 22 guys that year. Then again, that's like basically
the first year after the program. A couple of those are walk-ons and looking through the list on 24-7
sports. Really, only a couple of them are two deep guys, Felton Gardner, who was like an
in-season transfer in Stephen Parker.
And I think that's what you'll find here as you go through the future years or past
years, I guess, for KU football, they haven't lost a ton.
They've done an excellent job at retention under Lance Leipold.
And a lot of the guys they've lost have not been key players, right?
You go to 2023.
You lose 14 guys.
Jacob Borchillo was a starter technically, but you upgraded with what you added.
Kai Thomas was on the too deep there, but he kind of fell off afterwards.
Gavin Potter was on the two deep, but he wasn't.
anything crazy, right? Stephen McBride had a solid career, Hawaii afterwards, Jarrett
Paul, Eric Gilliard. Those are like too deep or too deep adjacent, but none of them are
really starters. 24, you lose 14 more. Armage Reed Adams was the big one. He's a stud. He's like,
I mean, you'll see him in the playoff game for Texas A&M. Like he is one of the better guards
in the entire country. So that was unfortunate to lose him. You lost Gage Keys, who was,
you know, kind of part of the two deep. Spencer LaValle was kind of at the lower end of the
two deep for you as well.
Overall, like, still pretty good job at retention there, especially considering the guys they had coming back that next year.
And then in 2025, they lose 17 guys, though Keon Burnett counts into that on 24-7 on their list, which that's kind of a boomerang.
So it's really 16.
And again, some of these are walk-ons that it's counting on this list.
Like Wesley Edison was a form of free state player, walked on, transferred to a D2, Will Gavin.
Like, those are guys that weren't scholarship players.
So, like, as far as guys competing for the two-deep or on the two-deep,
Savion Morrison, by Job, and even both of them, it's like not a guarantee that would
have been on the two-deep.
And the big one last year was DJ Warner, obviously, but that was more big one in terms
of long-term, like Warner struggled at SMU, and he's back in the transfer portal.
And honestly, like, if losing Warner is the reason you were able to go out and get Leroy
Harris, it actually worked out really well for you because Harris, to this big,
point has been more productive than Warner was. And we'll see where that finishes and stuff.
But I guess point being, they've done a good job player attention. And if you compare the 11
players they've lost now to this point this year, to some of those past years, right? We look at
the, because if I'm just going, this is just a hand count, right? I could be off a guy or two
in each of these classes on my assumption of they were on scholarship or they were a walk on.
But based on the guys I counted who were on scholarships, they lost 17 and 20.
2012, 11 and 2023, 10 in 2024, 11 and 2025. Again, could be off a couple guys here
there, right? But just based on that, you're averaging losing about 12 guys per year. So right now,
the 11 guys that you've lost so far is not abnormal. It's, in fact, slightly below average.
But again, that's where you get into a little bit of, but there's still a couple weeks before
the portal officially opens up. And then you've got the period where the portal is opened up,
where does, you know, somebody fill a roster or somebody pick up a player and that leads
another school to say, hey, we wanted that player now that you're in another school, I'm going to
tamper and try to get this other kid at Kansas, right?
The fact that you're already at 11 makes me think that you are going to end up on the higher
side this year.
Now, the key to all this, too, isn't just the number of players you lose.
It's the quality of players you lose.
And as I talked about, like our Moshe Reed Adams, that wound up being a really big loss for
KU.
DJ Warner, like I said, you didn't want to lose.
lose that one with his long-term potential. But overall, it hasn't been like a ton of, you know,
star players or starters for KU. And that's also been, again, they haven't at least to this point,
right, that could change, but they haven't lost the star necessarily. They have lost starters, though,
right? You think of Lyric Rawls entering the portal. John John Kamara is somebody who, I don't know
if he would have been a starter. He would have been in competition for it. Depends what happens the
rest of the offseason for KU. At the very least, he goes in the DJ Warner bucket of, you know,
really high long-term potential, but we'll see where it ends up. It does give me the feeling
right now that maybe this one will end up being a little bit higher. I don't know if this
has anything to do with it, but if you missed it, there were some recent like social media
drama. I think it was Gage Key's mom on X tweeted this out. Everyone wants to blame coaches for
kids leaving, but I'm here to tell you that Rob I and L.O. is the number one reason these kids are
leaving. He continually lies to these kids. And honestly, I don't know how he sleeps at night.
He is terrible for the program. Now, I don't read all that to just like justify everything that
was there. Who knows what's happening here, right? But it is at least of note that then L.J.
Arnold's screenshoted it and posted it on his Instagram with kind of an added caption. That man
be lying to these people about how much they getting paid NIL. He had con artist for show.
So, again, it's not something that I'm, like, reporting on or looking into, but the more players that come out about it, if it's just this, too, then it's going to kind of end there.
But I don't know, the more smoke there is, the more you're going to start to worry is there fire.
Now, keep in mind, Rob Ainello is the GM.
You know who is that he was somebody who was with the Charlie Wife staff, eventually found his footing at Buffalo with Lance Leipold, and then came back over to Kansas.
And, yeah, so I just bring this up to say that's not great.
Now, if Kansas knocks out the portal class, nobody's even going to remember that stuff.
They're not.
And if you have a good season, nobody's going to remember it.
I just bring it all up to kind of be like, okay, are these numbers higher or lower?
Right now it's about on par.
But with how much time you have left before the portal opens up makes me think it's
going to be a little bit higher.
And if we're trying to figure out reasons why, you know, some of it could be money.
Some of it could be people in the KU.
office. Some of it could be don't get along with a coach. Some of it could be playing time, right?
There's a lot of different reasons players can enter into the transfer portal. And I do think there
is a little bit of, hey, these last two seasons haven't gone as planned. And any little
moment or weakness that is shown in the off season is going to be used to pile on. And it might
not be that way. It might not be correlated that way. But I'll be very interested to see how this
portal class finishes. So where does this leave?
the current KU football roster, that next.

Okay so where does this leave the
current KU football roster? I have them
sitting around 70 scholarships, again, that can be plus minus because you don't know what
walk-ons earn a scholarship. You don't know what players might end up having a scholarship that you
never, you know, kind of thought to begin with, but it's somewhere around there. And I think it gets
really sticky on special teams. Like, does the long snapper have, right? Stuff like that.
But point being, you can go up to, what is it, 85 now. So that gives you at least somewhere around
the 15 mark to kind of play with here. A little easier to keep track of this in basketball than it
is in football. But, okay, let's start with the offense. Then we'll move to the defense.
So I think right now the offense, you haven't been hit with it at the quarterback position.
Cole Ballard will be a redshirt junior. You have Isaiah Marshall as a redshirt sophomore,
David McComb is a redshirt freshman and Jalen Mason as a true freshman. I think the idea is
that those three Ballard Marshall McComb will compete for the quarterback spot. Mason will too.
But as a true freshman, it's going to be tough to do that.
Ballard is the guy who has the most reps. Ballard is the guy who seems to have the coach's trust.
Marshall is probably the most dynamic runner.
Actually, not probably.
He is the most dynamic runner.
And then McComb is kind of the wild card and all this because was he just not in that
competition for the backup this year because they just wanted to make sure they red shirted
him or was it because he wasn't as good as the other guys?
Like that's the question we just don't have the answer to.
But it seems like I know a lot of people as soon as they got Mahal McComb before he even
stepped foot on campus thought that he was going to be the eventual guy.
And maybe that ends up coming to fruition here.
so that'll be interesting.
But again, I don't really think you're looking to add anybody there.
At a running back spot, I remain under the idea that to me,
I'd be looking to add like a game-changing running back.
I think having that really good running back takes this offense to the next level.
I think we saw that with Devon Neal.
And so I like the young guys you have, Justin Thurman, Harry Stewart.
I really like Corey and mockery.
I like this young group of running backs.
Obviously, John Kelly in there as well as a retro freshman.
and you've already lost, you know, running back to the portal.
But I think it's a situation where if you can add a really good one,
and then you have one of the young guys, step up as the 1A to the 1B or the 1B to the 1A,
and then you have your other young guys kind of the spare, the third string,
I think that's a good spot to be in.
Now, theoretically, if you decided, hey, we're better off spending that money we'd use on a
running back on bringing in another good offensive lineman or another good defender,
I think I can be okay with that.
But if you're choosing between, hey, we want to pay a good running back or we want
to pay a good receiver, I'm taking the running back based on what I think this offense
should and could be.
Then you look at the receiver position, Cam Pickett back and he'll be, you know, your starting
slot.
You look at the outside.
I've kind of said this before.
I know Keaton, Quebec hasn't had, like, he's had a few moments here there, hasn't
been consistent at all.
If Quebec ends up being your starter as a redshirt junior, because you're trying to save a
little bit of money there and you're using it on say running back and offensive line I'm cool with
it right but if you do decide you're going to try to upgrade there and get two more starting receivers
I could see it it's just not my preferred destination right but you do at least need to add one starting
receiver I think there and maybe you feel good about somebody like jackson cook or jada nickens
or tate naggy or bryson hayes again any of these players could transfer you just never really know
Jaden Dawson potentially.
You got a bunch of freshmen coming in, Tyrant Parker, Nate Sims,
Corbyn, Glasgow, all speedsters, all those Sims coming off the injury.
Don't really expect him to have the impact in year one.
You need something there at receiver, at least one guy, maybe two in the portal
to at least maybe give you a little bit of depth,
but probably also depends what you lose.
Then you look at the tight end position.
I feel good about Carson Bruin there as the starter.
Had that injury at the end of the year, but he looked good as a retro freshman.
I'm expecting more growth as a redshirt sophomore.
Layton Cure can come back for another year.
So that would be a good start.
And then I do like the two freshman tight ends,
but you probably want to redshirt both of those guys.
So you could probably use adding another tight end.
And KU likes to play two tight end sets, three tight end sets.
So if you want to, you know, again, invest some real money,
even though you do have Brune in another good tight ends,
you feel like you can have consistent two and three tight end packages,
especially after all the injuries we saw this year,
I think that would make sense for KU.
Going to the offensive line,
I'd assume Calvin Clements will start again at tackle.
He did improve as the season went on.
Obviously, he's going to have to make more jumps in the off season
for that to be a strength to you.
And then you look at the other tackle spot.
I think that would make sense.
You lose Enrique Cruz to go out and spend one of your biggest spends in the portal,
to me, should be at the other tackle spot.
I think that would make a lot of sense.
With a young quarterback, with trying to be a team who can run the football,
I think adding a really good offensive lineman is about,
as high on the priority list as anything there.
Now, maybe for all we know, you know, a Jack Tanner, Carter Lavruski or, I don't know,
Antonio Wilson or something, one of these guys that's been in the system, maybe they've been
super impressive behind closed doors.
I'd rather take that for sure thing at the tackle spot, right?
It's one thing to not take a for sure thing at receiver and hope it develops.
It's another at tackle when it's like, okay, now you're getting your young quarterback like hit
all the time.
And then you can just use the young guys as kind of your swing tackle and start to get them more reps before they would eventually play maybe the following season.
I feel good about the starting guards.
I know Amir Herring is the one who was the returning starter, will be.
And he had a great year for KU.
Tevaki Tuukolo Vatu had really good pro football focus numbers in a little bit more limited reps.
I think he can be your starting guard at the other spot.
And I would feel okay with that.
And that would save you some money in the portal attacking it.
Now, the question is, do you feel good enough about your depth at card?
I mean, D'Andre Harper will be a redshirt sophomore if he's going to play guard or tackle.
James Livingston, again, kind of same question there as a redshirt senior.
Do you feel good about both of those guys, or do you need to add at least some depth in the portal?
But I actually feel good about the two starters.
We'll see how they feel about Tui Colovato.
And then at the center position, again, kind of same thing here.
Do you feel good about where Tyler Mercer was at?
Played a lot as a freshman, transferred to KU, took a redshirt year, learned behind Bryce Foster.
he'll be a redshirt sophomore now.
You also have Anderson Cop who redshirted.
I think the idea to me is that Mercer should be the starter.
And again, that probably saves you a little bit of money
from what you do in this portal season from going out to get somebody.
But it'll be telling what KU decides to do.
At the very least, though, do you need depth or is cop or one of these other linemen,
you know, filling into a at least backup center role?
That'll be interesting for KU.
So I think we're looking at the offense here to me.
Portal needs are this.
number one would be right tackle number two would be running back number three would be
tight end number four would probably be receiver and then you're looking at depth guys after that
like depth guard or you know potentially a depth center a depth receiver like those different
things in some order form or fashion all right what about the defense um by the way special teams
let's just knock that out right here they need they need bodies they're losing their kicker
their punter and their log snapper so uh there's the short on that all right defense next

thanks again for joining us here on lockdown jahawks making us your first
listen every day you can check out locked on college football or locked on college
basketball for your second listen every day all right uh what about the defense for k u
where does this leave k u on the defense side i think a defensive end i feel good about this spot
assuming you get these guys to return lero harris those huge back for k u i'm super high in what he
could be if you can get dack brinkley back that is huge for k u as well i really
like the flashes he showed, especially you think of the Arizona game and late in the year that
make me start to think, you know, 2026 could be a breakout for Dak Brinkley.
Alex Bray is somebody who I feel fine about as a kind of rotational defensive end.
I would like to upgrade at the strong side.
The caveat here to me becomes, what if they moved Elroy Harris to the strong side to say,
hey, we're going to start Dak Brinkley at the weak side and now have what we view as our two
best defensive ends on the field together?
Or do you want to keep Harris in the spot that he's been in where you're going to
had success. That is kind of the question there. Now, if you do decide to keep Harris and Brinkley
as the one-two there, that's a really, really good one-two for KU, I would like to see them. I mean,
obviously, you at the very least probably need to get another body at the strong side to rotate
with Bray. I would like to see it somebody who can be an upgrade on even what you had with
Justice Finkely, if you could. Now, obviously, the wild card and all this, Dylan Brooks, what is he
going to be like coming back off injury? Adrian Holly and Garrett Martin, both pretty well thought of
as incoming freshman recruits and red shirt of their first year, can one of them kind of
break out in the same way that Dak Brinkley started to become a real player as a red shirt
freshman here in 2025. You look at the defensive tackle spot. Blake Harold probably a projected
starter, well, is a projected starter. The if would be, is he going to come back or not, right? If he comes
back, I expect stardom from him this year. Marcus Calvin had some really good moments this year.
So if he ends up being a starter or one of your first rotational detackles, I think I feel
good about him. And then I really like the transfer portal edition of Jibril Conday, who is somebody that
is going to be kind of versatile in some of the fronts that KU wants to throw out there. And I think
can be a quality player. Now, Josiah Hammond, read your freshman, is he going to be ready to play at
all? That'll probably determine how many more detackles that you. You're going to have to add
detackles in the portal. The question is, to what extent and how many, right? If you feel good about
Hammond, at least being your fifth D tackle, for instance, maybe you only need to add one more
defensive tackle and maybe it's more of a depth guy or maybe you want to add a starter level
one to start next to Harold and say Calvin and Conday will be our first two off the bench,
right? But you definitely need to at least add one and maybe you even add two. Then you look to
the linebacker spot. Trey Lathen would be a gigantic, I guess, not addition, but readission. That's
not a word, but you know what I mean. They need to get it back because he had an unbelievable season.
And even though you lost John John Kamara, you lost Logan Brantley here.
it leaves the linebacker core a little more thin.
If you can bring back Lathen and SIP takes his extra year,
and if you can add a decent transfer portal kind of backup level linebacker,
and Malachi Curvy is the real deal after redshirting,
and Joseph Credit comes in and looks like a future piece as a freshman,
and Josh Galbraith, whether he's going to be kind of that hawk linebacker safety role
or just a traditional linebacker,
there is still a lot of talent in that room,
but they do need more bodies, right?
They do need more body.
Now, the amount of bodies, maybe it gets lessened, right?
If Kansas is going to continue to play more just two linebacker true sets,
then the number of guys you need there actually goes down a little bit.
So maybe they can afford some of these losses a little bit more.
But the key for me there is really laything, right?
The linebacking core, if you have layton back with SIP,
and then you've got some young guys who, you know,
they're going to be young and experienced,
but are very talented with curvy credit Galbraith around him,
I really like the look of that.
But it's just you take the one guy away,
you take Lathen away,
and now all of a sudden it's a situation where it's like,
I don't know.
Not that I don't like any of the players,
just that it would be a lot of players who don't have snaps at Kansas so far.
And that's a scary place to be.
So you need to get Lathen back,
but that is where the linebacking course sits.
At the very least, probably going to have to add a body there.
You look at the secondary at the corner position,
Jalen Todd had a solid.
year is kind of a moving inside and out, played a little bit of both throughout the year.
He'll be a junior, get him back, and he's somebody who I think will have an even better
years of junior. He improved from freshman and sophomore and has been a solid player for KU.
Austin Alexander showed some moments, and he'll be a redshirt sophomore now.
The question to me becomes, do you feel good enough about the jump he's going to take,
or do you try to say, hey, we're going to bring in competition, try to bring in a veteran who's
going to start over him. But if Alexander wins the job over him, then that's a great sign of
where Alexander's level of competition came.
And the same comes for, you know,
Saeed Gibbs and Joliel Hurley.
But at the very least,
you're going to need some more bodies in the secondary, right?
Because you're in a position,
I specifically look at safety,
where with a lot of these losses that we think about,
like Lequine Robinson,
Lerick Rawls, going back to Jamele Croft,
like you've lost a lot of defensive backs.
You at least need to get some bodies in there.
But I think it makes the most sense to add
like a starter level player at the corner and or the safety position.
Now, what do you want to do with safety, right?
I think Taylor Davis moving from more of the free safety role to kind of the
strong safety role with the departure of Rawls makes sense.
And I don't know if that was part of the plan for KU that, hey, we can only afford one
of these guys.
They're kind of redundant in the same position.
We tried to play them at the different positions.
It didn't work as well.
We're going to move one and then pick one.
And Davis gives you two years.
Rawls gives you one.
So maybe you end up setting a hard line of what you.
You would go money-wise for some of the players, and you end up bringing Davis back, right?
And so you need more of a free safety, somebody who can cover.
Then you look at the, I guess, the depth or the lack thereof of the safety position.
It's like if Taylor Davis is one of your starter, Brandon Schmelsley, who redshirted,
Darian Jones, who redshirted, and then incoming freshman Robert Reddick, you got a lot of work to do in the portal,
adding some bodies there.
And then there's the hawk roll too.
I didn't mention Mason Ellis, which technically he is.
as a safety. So maybe they decide Mason Ellis will be, you know, better off as a free safety.
Who knows? Because he is a very good athlete, right? Maybe he's more of the hawk. But where does he
fit in? And does he stay kind of in that position? And then you have Josh Galbraith in all this that,
like I said, is he going to be a lineback or is he going to be a hawk? So I think a couple of the ones
you're looking at here on defense. To me, add a, to me, the defense, like a defensive tackle linebacker
safety are all positions, you need to definitely ramp up your depth.
But I'm looking at the strong side defensive end.
I'm looking at corner.
I'm looking at safety and saying if you can get a starter level player at those three
spots, somebody that would upgrade the position for you.
That'd be a good place to be in for the KU defense.
If you can bring the guys back,
that could be stars like Harold and Harris and Lathen and Todd
and surround it with some, you know, just steady veteran.
solid level players there.
Maybe that's how we finally see this defense take the next step
that we've kind of been waiting for the entire Lance Light Poldera.
