Okay, so Kansas 31, Fresno State 7, this is a game that, you know,
the final score was kind of the, I guess it was the score, you know,
coming in the beginning of the fourth quarter.
And will he just honestly a dominant outing for KU in the end?
And Yaut Yardum, 386 to 216.
It's funny because, again, it felt like both teams were kind of sitting on it the final fourth quarter of the game.
Now, Fresno State sitting on it at the end was more so about the Kansas defense playing really well.
And for Kansas specifically, like, when they wanted to get stuff, especially in that first half, first two and a half, three quarters of the game, they got it on offense.
You know, they started getting more into just, okay, we're going to, you know, we don't want to show too much.
We're going to run, you know, our basic running plays in the final quarter and half of the game.
and then it just kind of coasts the finish line to 31 to 7.
Maybe the biggest takeaway, because, I mean, this is a new stadium for KU.
It's a new season.
The fact that you beat Fresno State when you lost your Mountain West game a season ago
and you were one win shy of a bowl game, that in itself is impressive.
From a team-wide perspective, just getting a win, it's always fun, always celebrate them, right?
I think the biggest takeaway for me, though, is just about the fact of how much Kansas won this game by
and how dominant it was.
I went over in one of the previews to this episode,
and they get everybody hears you if you already caught it,
talking about how Fresno State plays a lot of these power four,
power five teams really close and win some of the games.
This was never in doubt for Kansas, right?
I mean, you go down and you get the touchdown.
Fresno State goes down on their first drive and gets touchdown.
And maybe at that point it's like, okay,
this is going to be a back and forth game.
From then on, it never really was.
Kansas just dominated from start to finish.
And as much as beating the good opponents is what,
you know, matters a ton and is going to define, you know,
where you get to on your goals of the season.
When you are able to consistently, and this is just one game,
but when you are able to consistently beat, you know,
average opponents or decent opponents, right,
or even the bad opponents,
and you were able to make them look even worse,
you were able to humiliate them,
you were able to dominate them.
That's where the best teams come into play.
I'm not saying Kansas is the best team in college football.
They certainly look like the best team in week zero, right?
I mean, I guess Iowa State gets the best.
win over Kansas state. So it's apples to oranges. But like, Kansas looked really good in this game.
They look really clean for first game. I know there were some penalties, offensive line and stuff,
but like it was just a really well executed game by Kansas that it felt like they could have
won by even more than a decent score over a decent team who plays these types of teams really
tough overall. And again, you out yard them by 170 in the end. They did it in a little bit of
everything. And it's just like the good teams are able to find a way to dominate the, again,
again, the kind of average teams.
So that's a big takeaway for me that it wasn't just,
hey, you got a repeat of the UNLV game last year,
but then you came out on top with a late one score game.
It's like, no, you didn't need it.
Like, you just took care of business, never really in doubt.
I mean, you had a game where Jalen Daniels went 18 of 20.
Like, hey, he goes 18 of 20.
He ends up under on the passing yard.
So that's a little unfortunate.
I wasn't expecting Kansas to win by 24 points in him to have to be, you know,
sat for the final two drives of the game for KU.
but yeah he goes 18 of 20 in a game against a real division one opponent it's one thing when he goes 18 of 20 against an fcs opponent he does that next week against wagner it's like okay like that makes sense this still is a Fresno state team right they have a pulse you know um so that was really impressive but how about the defense man uh the defense i mentioned that opening drive for k u right so Fresno state on their opening drive they get stuck to a third down situation right and on that third down situation right and on that third down situation
situation, you know, Fresn State has like a good play by E.J. Warner where he just kind of, he's under pressure and he dumps it off to the, I forget if there's the running back or receiver, you know, running kind of a short play. And he basically takes for a big game. And then from then on, like, President State looks really impressive on their first drive. And they end up scoring a touchdown on the first drive. And at that point, it's like, okay, the KU defense line, which I thought was going to be pretty good against kind of a younger President State offensive line, not really imposing its will. In fact,
State imposed their will on the line of scrimmage in that first drive.
But from that point on, you could tell KU's defensive line is better than the
Fresno offense line because Fresno could not get any push at the line of scrimmage for
the game.
I mean, Fresno State finishes the game with 29 carries for 37 yards.
That is 1.3 yards per carry.
Now, obviously in college, you know, sacks count against your rushing totals.
E.J. Warner finished with four carries for negative 23 yards.
If we exclude E.J. Warner's rushing stats, you still only get.
at 25 carries for 60 yards.
That's a little over two yards per carry on basic math for Fresno State.
So, and again, think about that first drive of the game where, you know,
Fresno State was able to move the football to a decent rate.
And if you take away that first drive, I mean, just the dominant outing by KU's defense.
I mean, in the end, if you're going to say you're going to only give up seven points in game,
you would take that any day of the week for the defense.
But especially once you consider what they did after the first drive, it was really, really
impressive for the KU defense from there.
And maybe that ends up being the biggest takeaway unit-wise from this game,
just from a standpoint of like,
we've seen the offense here over the past couple of years be a top 25 offense nationally,
right?
Last year is a little more inconsistent, but they still had their peaks.
The two years prior with Andy Kodolniki, it was the top 25 offense in the country both
years, you know, whether they're looking statistically or whatever.
And we've seen them be that.
And so, yes, it was a good reminder to see them be able to, again,
Daniel and Daniels going 18 of 20 for the game.
Kansas at halftime having like 250 yards of offense before they started to kind of sit on it.
Some of the different receivers getting involved.
Kansas running for over 200 yards.
It was good to see a reminder what this offense can be,
especially with Jim Zabrowski and some of the different things they were able to do.
It was great to see them throw over the middle of the field a little bit more.
Like there were certain things you point to and say, okay, that was cool to see with the offense.
But we haven't seen the defense be a top 205 unit in the country in a Lance Light Polaro year.
We haven't seen them be a top really 40,
50 unit in the country.
And this one game against Fresno State doesn't guarantee you're going to be able to do that,
but it was the right step forward to be able to go on that path.
And they looked good in just a lot of different ways.
I mentioned Fresno State was unable to run the football, right?
1.3 yards per carry on 29 carries.
Even throwing the ball, you know, E.J. Warner finishes with 29 attempts for 179
passing yards.
That's essentially six yards per pass.
Like, if you end up finishing the season, only giving up six yards per pass, you would have
one of the best past defenses in the country.
And on top of it, you give up zero passing touchdowns of two interceptions, right?
If you finish with zero to two and a touchdown to interception ratio every game,
if you're a defense, that's going to work each and every time for KU.
So that ends up being really cool overall for Kansas.
I think beyond that, I was really excited to see the aggressiveness of KU felt like they were
being very aggressive in going for some of those fourth downs.
And I don't know if that's a Jim Zabrowski thing.
Is that a Lance Leipold thing or what?
but Kansas is consistently ranked near the bottom of the Big 12
the last couple years in fourth down attempts.
Now the first year they were here at Kansas,
they ranked a little bit higher,
but the last couple years that hasn't been the case.
And so they end up attempting three fourth downs in this game.
They go two for three in the game.
They just had the one stuff on the run play.
I love the aggressiveness.
It's not just the aggressiveness of deciding to go for fourth down.
It's the aggressiveness of the lead up to fourth down.
Right.
Well, really stood out to me was that,
It was setting up the, so on the fourth down, LaShawn Williams, I think it was the second touchdown of the game.
LaShawn Williams has a touchdown, which was super great blocking by KU on that touchdown.
And I think it was late in cure of the tight end who had the really good like edge ceiling kickout block to further open it up.
In addition to the office line to allow Williams to get the touchdown on the fourth and one.
And that's what you see.
That's what you remember?
You remember the fourth down conversion leading to a touchdown.
But what about the plays that led up to it?
It was like a, this was after one of KU's many penalties on the offensive line in the game.
that they had like a, it was maybe like a second and 15 or something.
And you would think, okay, they're going to throw the ball these next two down to try to pick it up.
Instead, they run the football.
I think it was a QB draw for Jalen to pick up, I don't know, maybe five, six, seven yards, set up a third down.
And then again, you're like third and seven, third and eight.
And you're like, okay, well, this is clearly going to be a pass.
They run again and they run Daniel Hyshaw.
And you pick up, you know, six or five or six yards to where the defense is expecting pass,
which allows you to have an easier time running the football, because in your head, the whole time you're going,
hey, we're going to go for this fourth down if we can get it to a more manageable down.
So we don't need to play this down on second and 15 like we have to pick up 15 yards.
We don't need to play third and eight like we need to pick up all eight.
We just need four or five to make it manageable to go for fourth down.
And I love the thought process, the aggressiveness.
And so I just think there was a lot to come away from.
Defense was great.
The efficiency of the offense when they were actually kind of going for it, so to speak.
And then just the festivities, how great the new stadium was.
and football's back, baby, and boy, did KU look good in doing so.
We're going to get to our moments, plays of the game,
plenty more discussion from this game coming at you later this show,
and in future shows coming up on Locked on Jayhawks.
We'll also finish up with our game balls, all that next.
Today's episode of Locked on Jayhawks is brought to you by Fandual Sportsbook.

listen every day to wrap around what's going on around the rest of the country
with college football in this week zero.
Okay.
some of my favorite plays and moments from the game, I think to me, the play of the game actually ends up being very early in the game.
It's literally the third play.
I guess if you count the kickoff, the fourth play of the game.
So KU receives the opening kickoff.
Obviously, I'd imagine a lot of, I don't know, pressure trying to seize the moment.
The new booth crowd is hyped.
You get the opening kickoff of the game.
You want to start the season strong.
You're playing an underdog, you know, go and pose your well right away.
KU gets set into a third and six on their first series of the game.
And Jalen Daniels gets pressured.
He evades it.
He's able to make some magic with that Jalen Daniels kind of elite scrambling.
And KU is able to convert on the third down with Jalen Daniels making that magic happen on the scramble.
And from then on, you go score the touchdown.
You set the tone.
And then from there, it's off and running.
If you don't get that play, like Kansas looked good enough in this game.
that like I'm sure they still win the game.
But there is something to be said about a hot start and how that starts the momentum.
And especially in that situation with the new booth, the fans are waiting to explode.
The fans are waiting to take that built up energy from the new stadium and the excitement
of a new season, a new stadium, a new team and manifest it into the rest of the game.
And that play, avoiding some sacks, right, where all of a sudden it's a downer, for us and
turning it into an up moment, I think was so huge that says,
the tone for the rest of the game.
Now, other moments and plays that I thought were really great for KU overall,
that I thought there were a couple really just fun play calls in general.
I mean, some of the like fake speed option or fake pitch plays and then throwbacks
the other way, those were a lot of fun for KU.
The lyric Rawls interception, I mean, the concentration it took on him to come down
with that interception when he's kind of like hitting the receiver and it's deflecting off
him and to come down with the catch, that's just an unbelievable.
interception by Lyric Rawls.
Some of my favorite moments in this game, honestly,
were special teams, right?
I mean, just having Leith Marjan, like,
so easily have the distance on that 46, 47-yard field goal.
Like, that was great to see.
Finn Lapin is really good as pun.
I mean, the second punt that he had was the best one
that it takes the hop kind of angling out of bounds,
and he was kind of getting pressure.
Like, it was, it wasn't almost blocked,
but it was like it wasn't comfortably.
away from being blocked and he was able to get it off and boot of beauty the angle that
abounds like those were really cool i mean just in general every time daniel highshaw runs he runs
like it's going to be the last run of of his lifetime uh and that's always fun to watch i other
think um maybe the most meaningful play to me moving forward might be the this was a first half play
for k u this would have been in the second quarter and k u runs a little play action play i don't
know if there's a play action or if there's a read option. But regardless, Jalen Daniels fakes it or
pulls it, whatever from the running back. And Levi Wentz, the transfer from Albany, is running an
in-breaking route, I don't know, 10 or so yards, 10, 12, 15 yards down the field. And he cuts to the
inside. And right when Wentz makes the turn looking for the football, Jalen has it fired,
throws it right on the cut, makes the catch. That to me represented everything that I
wanted to see from Jalen and the offense in this game because we look back to the Jeff Grimes
offense last year, right? And it's not all on Jeff Grimes. Like there were there were moments where
the KU receivers had big drops. There were moments where Jalen Daniels struggled and was rusty at
the beginning of the season. There were moments where the defense let the offense down. It wasn't
all Jeff Grimes. But at the same point in time, I do think Jim Zabrowski is a big upgrade for what
KU wants to do and for what Jalen Daniels wants to do. And I do think it makes everybody more
comfortable and will be a much more cohesive and better fit for KU at the same point in time. And I
I think you saw that on this play. Jeff Grimes' offense morsel values working to the outside, right, throwing deep balls to the receivers, getting them flank routes, throwing screens, stuff like that, right? And that's not really the forte of Jalen Daniels. With certain personnel, that can be the forte and is actually going to be better for certain personnel. For what Kansas had and has and what Jaylon Daniels is, I don't think that was always the best fit. And you saw what the Andy Kodal niki offenses, you go look at the past charts for Jaylon Daniels. It was always super impressive the work that KU and Jailon
was a were able to do over the middle of the field and in the intermediate route portion so between
10 to 20 yards and the intermediate like the very middle of the field middle third of the field and
sometimes those two things you know kind of cross over and we didn't see it as much last year k you
didn't exploit as much the tight ends weren't exploited as much over the middle of the field they just
weren't able to throw over the middle of the field as much and they weren't as successful in doing so
and i think the combination of having a different coordinator also having jalen with less rust because
you think about those throws over the middle of the field,
the biggest part of it is the timing, right?
You have to, a, have good timing,
be able to throw a strong throw
and see, have confidence in the timing
with your receivers that they're going to be at the right spot
and make the play.
And I think some of those things were lacking last year.
Seeing that play to Levi Wentz told me everything I wanted to know
about Jaylon Daniels and what he is going to be this season
for KU in the,
in the Jim Zabrowski, Matt Lubick offense for this team.
That was really cool to see for KU taking in this one.
Also, I think Kenan Caldwell, a ton of awesome plays for KU,
but we'll get to him and plenty more coming up in our next segment
where we give out some game balls.
I also want to give a little bit of a review to the new booth stadium
and what I thought and just personal experiences being in there
because it was a lot of fun, certainly being out there.
We'll get to that next.

Before we get to our game balls on today's episode of the show,
I wanted to give a quick review of the new booth.
So I would say, like, I've driven by and stuff, but I don't think I realize, I don't really know how to best describe this.
Like the way I best, I described it to a couple people words, you know how like that feeling when you're at a big football stadium?
I kind of get this when you're like at Arrowhead.
And you're at an area and you see the big stadium and you're like, wow, that's a big structure.
And when you're walking into the stadium, you feel like you're walking into something big.
You feel like you're walking into something massive.
And I mean, Memorial Stadium before, it's not like it wasn't a big building and held like 50,000 people.
It's obviously a giant structure.
But I don't know that I got that same feeling.
And there's just something about walking in the depths of it, how gigantic it is, how ginormous it is.
I don't know.
It just felt like a different feel.
Like it felt like an event.
It felt like you were going to something big, something important.
I don't know how to really describe it other than that.
but like if you're going to week two or one of the future games and you haven't been,
I think you'll know that feeling that I'm talking about that I'm having trouble describing what
it is, but that was really cool.
So you walk in and when I walked in, it was very crowded, a lot of people going everywhere.
I think that was just, you know, people looking to get in and be in the booth when it wasn't
kind of that pregame where it's just your shoulder to shoulder, things were more opened up
and that was good through the majority of the game.
A lot of different like good bathroom options, no more, no more.
more troughs, at least on the new side of the stadium.
I don't know, maybe some people are upset about that.
But you have that, a lot of, like, food options, a lot of, like, drink options and stuff.
That was all great.
A lot of, like, self-scanners, so it's moving fast.
You're getting through really quickly.
That was all great.
They've got people going up and down the aisles.
Those are great.
The seating was great.
It seemed like all the sight lines were really good.
I thought, you know, the spacing between the seedings was really solid overall.
I thought it was definitely like you could notice.
I think they talked about this in the development of it,
that it is bigger and wider and better leg room and stuff like that than the previous
where it was.
And I think you could kind of notice that stuff.
So I was blown away.
I thought it was really cool.
And kind of a picturesque view,
if you could be in like the back end of the bowl where you could see the giant new
video board, you could see the Campanil, you could see the hill, you could see, I don't
know, Frasier, the Union, like all these different beautiful buildings on the KU campus.
And yeah, I was just, I was.
blown away by the sights and sounds and the atmosphere that we got to see in that first game
for KU. So if you did not go to the first game, you're going to one later, you're kind of
on the fence like, do I go, do I not? Yeah, highly recommend because a really fun experience and
obviously didn't hurt of how well KU played in the game. Our game balls for this one,
let's start with the offensive game balls for KU. I mean, I have to give one to Jayland
Daniels. You go 18 of 20. I mean, the efficiency there, unbelievable, 176 yards,
touchdowns, no interceptions. He also was able to run around to a very good degree. He finishes
with eight carries for 47 yards. One thing I was a little worried about it, did feel like Jalen took
a lot of hits in this game, whether it was designed QB runs or, I don't know, it felt like there
was a good amount of pressure and big hits he took while he was delivering the football or free
rushers coming off. Now, it is possible just the first game of the season, and you know, you're going to
have some free rushers because you haven't worked on as many blitzes as you need to, and it's a newer
offensive lines you're figuring stuff out but that'll be something that you want to tie up moving
forward but jalen was really good in this game and i talked about you know earlier in the last segment
like some of the reasons why i'm even more encouraged about him moving forward the rest of this season
with what he specifically did in the game i would also give an offensive game ball to i mean i want
to limit i don't want to give out like five offensive game balls um so this is tough because i
i would love to give one to lashon williams i mean six carries for 57 yards and a touchdown hope
he's all right after the injury looked like he was holding
his like hand, forearm, elbow, something like that.
So you hope he's all right.
But I'm going to do Cam Pickett.
We weren't sure which receiver was going to.
And early it was like Emmanuel Henderson getting a lot of targets, receiver screens.
It was really spread out.
We didn't really see the KU receivers go off necessarily.
KU didn't need them to.
But Pickett was the go-to guy in the end, six catches, 77 yards, two touchdowns.
He was six for six on his targets.
And a couple of those were just like screen plays or just plays like,
hey, just get him the ball and let him make something happen.
And we talked a lot about in the offseason,
the Henderson and Pickett, both players that can really make stuff happen yard after catch for KU,
and you saw that a lot in this game.
So I think he would also get a game ball for the offense.
Defensive side of the ball for KU, I want to give my first game ball to Keenan Caldwell.
Caldwell was awesome for KU in this game.
And coming into the season where it's like, okay,
is there going to be a defensive tackle breakout or is it just going to be a group of a lot of solid players?
And that could be okay.
But, you know, if you were tallying who showed the most possibly happening,
that breakout after the first game, it would probably be Keenan Caldwell. He finished with two
tackles in the game. He had a TFL. I could have sworn he had another like, I don't know,
big play or pressure or something in the backfield. He was also the one who recovered the fumble.
It just seemed like he was making a lot of plays and he was around the football a lot,
especially in the first half to where I want to give Keenan Caldwell one of those. And I forget
if he's a fifth or a 60 or senior, but, you know, cool that he came back and obviously making a big
impact in this one for KU.
Now, Kansas had, I don't know, a lot of other plays like Leroy Harris had a sack.
Bengali Kamara had a sack, get a couple TFLs and four tackles.
Alex Bray had a TFL and a half.
Logan Brantley got in there and had a half TFL, as did Trey Lathen.
Dak Brinkley looked pretty good in a couple situations.
There's a lot of guys that could pick for the second one.
Shoot, man.
Devin Die had a nice interception, a pass breakup, and half a sack.
That would be an easy one.
I'm going to actually go Lyric Rawls, though.
Again, the concentration on that interception was unbelievable for Lyric Rawls.
But there were also a couple times where he filled the hole really, really well coming
from the safety position to stop a running play.
I really liked what we saw from Lyric Rawls in this game.
I thought he was really good.
Five tackles, one interception, one pass breakup.
I'll be interested to see what the PFF numbers say, but the KUDB's overall.
But, yeah, I felt Lyric Rawls was really good for KU, the transfer from Oklahoma State.
And then special teams will just give out one game ball on this one,
Actually, like, you could argue three different players for KU on special teams, which that's a good problem to have, right?
You think about the strong pot return by Tate Nagy on his, it was his last attempt or second to last attempt in the fourth quarter where you see some of that agility and evasion.
He also had a couple good catches on fair catches, one that he really had to run for and make a tough catch for.
So that would be up there.
Leif Marjohn took his one kick, made it from 47 yards.
I am going to go with Finn Lapin, though.
Lapin had
I'm trying to think
how long was that punt? Okay, let's see
61 yards was the punt for Lapin
and he ended up with three for the game
53.7 average, two were inside the 20
and all three were 50 plus yards.
That's about as elite of a day you can have as a punter
as possible.
We were super high on Finn Lapin coming in.
We talked about how if he just did his C-Sysol.
an average at McNee State last year and repeated that for KU this year,
that he would break the single season record for most yards per punt in KU history.
Well, he certainly got off to a good start in this one,
and I feel pretty good about KU's specialists after the game.
All right, I don't know for this episode of Locked on Jayhawks.
