Starting point is 00:00:00 Talk about an ugly win for the Jayhawks, but guess what? An ugly win is advancing. We're at that survive and advance part of the season. KU takes down TCU, 78 to 73. Starting point is 00:00:35 Thanks for joining us live here. KU takes down TCU in the Big 12 quarterfinals. We're going to break it all down. What went right for Kansas? Awards of the game, stats of the game. What is next for KU? We'll get in all that on today's episode of the show. And thanks so much for joining Lockdown Jayhawks anywhere you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:00:52 Thanks for making Lockdown the number one sports podcast network. Today's episode is brought to you by five-hour energy. Have your cake and drink it to you. birthday cake flavors back, no fork needed, vanillae cakey flavor, caffeinated kick, no sugar, it's party time, order now at 5 hour energy.com or on Amazon. KU takes down TCU 78 to 73, and it was kind of a game where KU would go on like a 9-10 run and then TCU would respond. It kind of just felt like it was going back and forth.
Starting point is 00:01:20 And I said this on Twitter X, whatever you even call it. I don't know, there's a point in the game where I was just like wondering, is TCU just the better team than Kansas? unpopular with a lot of KU fans, which I'm not shocked by. You know, you're going to be defensive of your team, which I appreciate. But like my reasoning was simple. Over the last five games, over the last 10 games, TCU was playing better basketball. You look at the net ratings. You look at the records.
Starting point is 00:01:48 You look at the teams they've beaten. TCU had been playing better basketball coming into this game than Kansas. It was kind of limping to the finish line. And if not for KU's miracle Allen Fieldhouse comeback against the horn frogs, TCU would have been either the third or fourth seed in the big 12th tournament. Kansas would have been the sixth seed. So I don't think it's crazy to say that TCU at that point in time, you know, look the better team. And Kansas obviously responded and I think it comes down to this for me.
Starting point is 00:02:18 Kansas didn't even play that good of a game. I mean, they shot under 40%. The reason they win this game is because Flory Bedunga is that dude. Flory was incredible in this game. He was the best player on the court for either team. He came to play, man. He finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds, and that doesn't even do it justice. He was dealing with foul trouble throughout the game.
Starting point is 00:02:40 And if not for the foul trouble, maybe this is a game that KU is able to, you know, win rather easily. Because his impact specifically on the defensive end, preventing TCU from running the offense through their two good big men was so apparent and so valuable for KU. So, you know, if KU gets back to what they are when they're playing their best, I do think that version of KU. I do think the ceiling version of KU is better than those versions of TCU. But if it's going to be inconsistent, right, there's still, you know, if your last eight games are four and four, then this ends up just kind of being, okay, they found a way to win, but it didn't look super pretty.
Starting point is 00:03:21 So that kind of becomes a question here. What are you going to do with this fork in the road? you are now in a situation where you've won two straight games. It's your first time winning two straight games since February 7th and February 9th. So it's been over a month since you've won two consecutive games. That's good news because you're toward the end of the season. You want to rebuild that momentum at the end of the season, right? But what are you going to do with the next game?
Starting point is 00:03:42 Because next game is now the real big test, right? Taking on Houston, a team you already beat at home, but now playing in the team mobile center going to be a little bit more difficult against the Googers. And if you do want to get to a point where you feel like, you know, you're back, you're back in the rhythm, you're back to playing your best basketball at the end of the season when you are a better team than TCU when you're playing your best basketball, then that kind of becomes something where go win this next game. And then we can get into a conversation of what that all means for the seating conversation
Starting point is 00:04:13 and the NCAA tournament and yada, yada, yada. But I think above all, like, I just want to see them playing good basketball going into the NCAA tournament. You know, you get a four seed, you get a four seed. You get a three seed. But are you playing good basketball going into that to make it worth it to get the most out of it? And the thing about this game is, again, like, this wasn't good basketball by KU. I would say it was good defensive basketball by KU. It was not good offensive basketball for KU.
Starting point is 00:04:39 They shoot 38%. They were 4 of 17 from 3. They really won this game by they were aggressive. They got to the free throw line. Maybe a few calls that were a little friendly their way, though there's probably some calls at the other end that you could say, okay, that shouldn't have been a foul on KU. But they took advantage of it, right? If you're going to get to the free throw line, make them, right?
Starting point is 00:04:59 If you're going to get there 37 times, take advantage of it. And they did. They made 81% of their free throws. You know, you're not always going to be as lucky as what TCU was doing at the end of the game where they were just like throwing the ball out of bounds in the final couple of minutes of the game. But what do you do? If they're going to do it, take advantage of it, win the game. And Kansas won the game.
Starting point is 00:05:17 And so you do deserve credit from that standpoint. And this is where the big question comes into that next game with Houston. and it's not going to be easy because they are a rugged team who typically plays really good defense. But is this just a situation of KU didn't play a great game, but they found a way to win, but they're still trending in the wrong direction? They just found a way to win.
Starting point is 00:05:36 Or is it that they found a way to win ugly, one of Bill Self's favorite things to do, which they did in this one, and now you hope that, say, in the Houston game, you can continue to defensively play like you're trying to win ugly, but then offensively have a better shooting night to where you can mesh those things together and have a really incredible performance.
Starting point is 00:05:55 That's kind of the hope of what you want to do, that you can kind of say, hey, we didn't even play that well and we won the game. Now what happens if we play well? We're going to double win the next game. You know what I mean? So that kind of becomes the interesting, I mean, between the two there. But yeah, just overall really impressive defensive performance for KU, really impressive performance for KU, really impressive performance for Florida Bedunga.
Starting point is 00:06:17 Darren Peterson, not a very efficient night, but the fact that he kept grinding out, that he kept, like, one of the things about Peterson that has ruffled some fans' feathers is the lack of aggressiveness at times. Well, he shot 16 free throws. You can't say anything about his lack of aggressiveness of this one. He was attacking the rim in this one more than we've seen in a lot of other games, and that's a good side for KU. I think the Bryson Tiller, you're getting a little into David McCormick territory right now
Starting point is 00:06:44 where it's like the good of Bryson Tiller is really good. Like, you get that turnaround feathery, like, Little eight footer in the lane in the first half. Some of the plays that you make throughout the game are like really enticing. And then there are other plays where it's like, what were you doing on defense there? Or like, what were you doing here? Like the good of Tiller is really good. The bad of Tiller is really bad.
Starting point is 00:07:09 And part of that is being a young player, being a freshman, but he actually wound up really good stats in this one, 13 and 8 in the end against a good front line in TCU. you. And you look to the Trey White Melvin Council combination in this one. Not a great game for them. Six of 21 shooting, two of nine from three, just 15 combined points. Again, you can kind of view it both ways. You can say the fact that Kansas found a way to win in a game where White counsel, and I guess if you wanted to lump on Peterson, when a combined, what, 11 of 38 from the field is really impressive and is a good, sign because you don't expect to get that level of production every game. You expect those shooting numbers to get better in other games. And so what happens when those numbers do get better combined with some of the other things you did well in this one? Then that's where you become dangerous. The flip side is, are those guys struggling at the wrong time of the season, right? So again, it kind of becomes,
Starting point is 00:08:07 okay, we're going to learn more in the Houston game to maybe have some takeaways of like, is this a trend or is this a one-off in some of these different situations? And the fact, you have 13 from a Marco, a little bit hidden by the free throws, but at least positive that you're getting like bench production from at least one guy. Like ideally you're getting bench production from two guys every night if you're Kansas. But at this rate, if you guaranteed one guy is going to produce for Kansas off the bench each and every game moving forward. I think at this point, I would just kind of have to take it. Some other notes from this one, the stretch where KU goes, there was some really weird shot selection, I guess. I would say from Kansas.
Starting point is 00:08:48 So you have one stretch where Tray White just randomly starts ISO ball shot hunting for like three straight shots, which is really weird because he's never really been that kind of player. And then you have the plays at the end of the game where like I forget to do. I think it was Peterson missed the shot. Flore he got the offensive rebound, kicks it out with like a minute and a half left. And El Marco launches just like a three early in the resetted shot clock and misses it. And then El Marco goes down like the next possession and misses. a shot too. And it's just like there are times where it's like this team will make you
Starting point is 00:09:21 want to pull your hair out with some of the shot selection, right? I'm also thinking too because you look at TCU in this one, David Punch had a really good game, 24 points. And he was obviously a lot better when Florey was not in the game, though he really picked it up at the end, even when Flory was in the game. I did find it interesting, though, that Layla Vicious went off again for TCU. He had 14 points on 507. He had a really good game in Allen Fieldhouse. too. And when you think about it, Leila Vicious is kind of a bigger wing three. And I think this just goes back to the idea that KU doesn't have the depth and flexibility of options at the wing position. Like, you think back to the 2012 national title team that had a bunch of wings.
Starting point is 00:10:05 I propose now. You had Christian Brown, who's over a hundred million dollar man in the NBA. You had Oachabaji, who was a first team all-American. Like, KU had a lot of wings on that roster that they can deploy at you on the defensive end. This team only has Trey White as one of their wings. And so it gets difficult against teams who do have bigger wings who can score. You just don't really have a ton of options to kind of go at them. And maybe that's something we keep an eye on for the NCAA tournament. Does the team have a bigger wing that they can play at the three that can kind of give you problems at some point?
Starting point is 00:10:35 I don't know. Maybe it's just Lailavicious just happened to be hot for two games. Who knows? And in general, this one kind of followed a similar. script for KU in terms of the offensive time struggling, but the defense winning them the game. But in the end, big win, you move on, A&H Houston now, probably in a position where you're off the five line. Like at worst, you're probably a four seed now in the NCAA tournament.
Starting point is 00:11:00 So that's probably a good thing. And have an opportunity in front of you based on what happens the rest of the big 12th tournament for you, based on what happens in some of the other conference tournaments for other teams. Could you play yourself into a three-seat at this point? it's at least on the table because you won this game, and that is a good sign for KU. Starting point is 00:13:54 Dot com. And I think, I think this is a good comment here that I want to bring up. TCU's good. Don't overthink it. KU needs to get this to get going. They have good energy against good teams. I agree. TCU is a very good team.
Starting point is 00:14:09 Like I said, I took some heat for saying, you know, right now you could argue TCU is a better team. And I don't regret that because at the time they were winning the game and they had been playing better basketball. Now, if we look back now, I'm obviously going to have egg on my face and I am an idiot for saying it, but I've been an idiot before, you know? And it is what it is. But I think there was logic behind it and that's all I can stand by.
Starting point is 00:14:32 But so, yeah, I mean, TCU, that's a quad one win for Kansas. TCU is a good team. TCU beat Florida. TCU almost beat Michigan, right? Like TCU beat Iowa State recently. TCU beat Texas Tech recently. So I don't want to sleep on, I appreciate the comment because I don't want to sleep on the value of this win. This is a good win for Kansas.
Starting point is 00:14:49 To go to and against TCU, that is two quality wins. That is two Quad 1 wins that helps the resume. And again, hopefully ideally above all allows KU to feel like they're playing well headed into the NCAA tournament. Because again, this is the first time they've won two straight games since the beginning of February. It's been over a month since they've done that. Let's see if they can make it three straight now, obviously, right? So moments and plays of the game for KU. I think in the early going, the run that they had after Flory reentered that featured a
Starting point is 00:15:18 Trey White and one dunk. And then you got like five Darren Peterson points in the run. And you hit that spicy three where he has a little step back that then leads to Jamie Dixon. I don't know what was going on. I don't know why he keeps getting touched by coaches, whatever. But like I understood they were kind of just not looking. They ran into each other. I just don't understand the hug or the grab part of it.
Starting point is 00:15:37 Who knows? But honestly in general, like for the moments of the game, we could probably just pick any moment that Flory was out there. Because when Florey was out there, good things were happening for KU. When Florey was not out there, bad things were happening for KU, which I think was as simple to say of like, so with TCU having two good big men, one of them in day, it's funny because in the games that I've seen for TCU,
Starting point is 00:16:00 David Punch has been the guy where I'm like, David Punch is TCU's best player. But it was Xavier Edmonds, who was the all conference pick for TCU. And he had a really good conference portion of the season. and his conference sets were really good over 14 points. I gave rebounds. So I understood how it happened.
Starting point is 00:16:13 But like, in my head, I'm like, no, David punches the guy. But still, it's a good front line for TCU. And so when Florey was not on the floor, it just became really difficult to guard them. And then KU had to add extra help. And then it left shooters open and they were passing out. And it was all sorts of issues. So, yeah, moments of Flore you just played is probably the answer here. I love Paul and Bia and many people do too.
Starting point is 00:16:34 So the one play where he kind of Pierre gets by him, but then he still, I think, affects the shot a little bit with his length so he misses the layup and then it leads to transition the other way. Peterson gets an and one missed the free throw, but able to cut the deficit from four to two when it felt like, okay, is TCU about to go on a run to push out to a big lead? And that allowed you to kind of, you know, stay back within a tight corner there. How about Trey White hitting a big corner three when you needed it? Not a great game for Trey White, but you can always rely on him shooting those corner threes.
Starting point is 00:17:03 And then I think, I know KU didn't score off of it. This was the, was this? I can't remember what they did on the office. offensive end, but Badunga had that big block on Jaden Pierre driving in. And again, they didn't score on it, but it preserved it at 66.63 and prevented them from getting an easy layup. And I think just kind of signified how impactful floor he was on both ends of the floor, specifically defensively, where TCU was not able to get easy looks at the rim when he was on the floor. Then you have the Melvin Council pick and roll where it's kind of a slip screen to Tiller who dunks it to make it
Starting point is 00:17:35 70 to 63. And then I think the kind of killer shot was, I know TCU was able to, you know, crawl back a little bit at the end there and make it a little interesting. But the Darren Peterson spinning jumper to make it 72, 65, that was everything we've been, like the whole idea here, I think with this Kansas team was grind it out, play good defense, and then have Darren Peterson get you over the top of the end of the game. And that was kind of the formula in this one, right? it was not a great game for a lot of guys, not the best offensive game.
Starting point is 00:18:08 The defense played well. Defense was great when Flory was on the court. And then Darren Peterson got you across the finish line. That is kind of the formula we talked about in the preseason for KU. Stat of the game or stats of the game for Kansas here. First of all, again, the fact that KU shot 38 percent, 24 from three is crazy they won this game. The 37 free throw attempts is a big part of that. Again, maybe a few calls that were friendly to KU, but again,
Starting point is 00:18:34 then you could point to a couple the other way that, you know, we're probably unfriendly to KU, but it's just the aggressiveness that comes with it. It's the idea of that you are playing aggressive to earn some of those whistles and you major free throws at an 81% clip on high volume. We've had some past years and past games with KU where they've had some clunkers at the free throw line. This team's been pretty good to this point in the season at the free throw line.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Other numbers that stick out here, KU being able to be only down one in offensive rebounds to a T-C-E team that does that very well. That ends up kind of nullifying one of their typical strengths. You actually led 14 to 10 and second chance points. So that's one that sticks out there, 34 to 28 points of the paint. But this is the big one here. TCU is a very good fast break scoring team.
Starting point is 00:19:19 You know, they like to get out and run. They like to score in transition. KU outscored them 19 to 7 in fast break. So that is our stat of the game right there, turning a normal strength for them into a minus 12. Awards of the game. What is our missed game? dunk of the game. I think there was three for KU. There was like an early one from Tiller.
Starting point is 00:19:39 There was another one from Tiller where he tried to put back. And then I think the answer has to be Peterson after that really good steel missed the dunk. Does it have anything to do with the court? You know, maybe not able to get as much lift off the court or much power off it. And even those few extra inches can lead to a miss there. We have our misleading individual stat of the game award. Do we go with El Marco Jackson, who put up 13 points in this one? And if you just quickly look at a box score, you'd go, wow, Marco had a great game off the bench for KU. And again, I thought El Marco was solid, decent in this game.
Starting point is 00:20:12 I appreciated the two steals he got. He was plus six and the plus minus, but a little misleading because the 10 for 10 at the free throw line, including what, four of those in the last like 30 seconds of the game. Okay, so you have that as a misleading box score stat. The Peterson box score stat a little misleading as well with the 24 points because he was only 5 of 17. That said, again, I appreciated the aggressiveness of Peterson.
Starting point is 00:20:33 getting to the free throw line when the shot wasn't falling. He had three steals. He had eight rebounds. Those are both going to play. And then the last one here, and this is going to be the answer. The misleading stat of the game is that Flory only had 13 and 10. I say that. That's a good game.
Starting point is 00:20:46 That's double, double. He was five for five. But 13 and 10 just feels kind of like a pedestrian floory game. It's a solid game, but it doesn't jump off the page. That does not do justice to how impactful he was. TCU didn't do anything at the rim when he was on the floor. Be afraid of him or him altering shots. whether he got the block or not, that was misleading because that was an incredible 13 and 10 game.
Starting point is 00:21:09 Like that had that almost felt more valuable than maybe a game where he put up like, I don't know, a 20 and 12 or something like that, right? And then we have our trying to steal the Thunder Award, which was I definitely believe this is the case. So around halftime of the KU game, some of the national reporters, which means it probably started leaking out from K-State, started reporting that K-State made. made their new hire of a head coach. They hired the Belmont head coach. I think it's actually a good hire for K-State. But the timing of it all, they absolutely were trying to steal some thunder from KU during the game to try to pull some headlines. That was absolutely a rivalry move right now. And then the final award here is the I'm an idiot award. A couple different answers. I mean, just in general, like, I don't know, you could give me that award for a lot of things. But
Starting point is 00:21:57 I thought Trey White was going to have a great game here. I mentioned him in Hawks the store. I thought it's set up. Chots didn't go down. Took a little too much ISO ball. So that would be one. The other one was, I guess, you know, when KU was down to TCU, saying that TCU was the better team, I ended up being wrong. So I'm an idiot award, pick and choose, whatever you want it to be. But thank you for listening along anyway. All right, let's get on to what's next for KU. This is Locked on Jayhawks. All right, game balls, and then we'll get to what's next for KU.
Starting point is 00:24:44 So offensive game ball for KU. I mean, Peterson led Kansas in scoring with 24. It wasn't the most efficient, 17 of them, or 5 of 17 in the end shooting the ball. He also had just one assist compared to two turnovers. But then again, in a game where KU didn't shoot well as a team, five of 17. It's like somebody had to be, you know, grinding along here. Tiller had fairly efficient. Five of ten, 13 points. And then you get 13 off the bench from a Marco. You get 13 from
Starting point is 00:25:12 Florey on five of five shooting. He also had one assist, two turnovers. I am going to actually give this to Peterson, again, just the five of 17. But the value of continually attacking, getting to the free throw line. I think a lot of people had a gasp when he kind of was rubbing his shoulder like, oh, no, what's this going to be? And instead, he was just more aggressive in the second half. So he gets our offensive. And a defensive game ball, I mean, it has to go to Flory. He had the three blocks. He had a steal to pair with it. So like, you know, there's counting stats, but it's just in general. Again, he was plus 31. He was plus 31. In a game where he played 27 minutes. Okay. So Darren Peterson was second in plus minus on KU at 10.
Starting point is 00:25:56 but like you have players like in deep negatives here for KU in this game. He was so impactful in preventing TCU from doing what they wanted to, I guess around the rim in general. Let's see what TCU shot on layups and dunks. TCU was six of 17 on layups. Big part of that is Flourbadonga. So he's our defense game ball and the floor gets our overall game ball. I mean, just the overall value efficient, rebounding, getting extra possessions on the offense
Starting point is 00:26:25 glass, getting blocks. preventing TCU from doing whatever they wanted. So Flore gets the overall game ball here. Now, what is next for Kansas? I am going to have a KU Houston preview that will be coming out after this. So we'll have that episode as well. And if you remember, KUB, Houston by 13 in Allen Fieldhouse, just what, like two weeks ago, three weeks ago at this point,
Starting point is 00:26:46 a little bit different not having Allen Fieldhouse, but Houston, obviously, a very good team. And this is a big game for ball. I mean, I don't think Houston's going to get a whole. one seed. It seems like Florida and Yukon are kind of down to that. It feels like Florida is going to get it. But if Houston wins the big 12th tournament, they've got a case to get that last one seed. So they're going to be looking to do that. And we've talked about that for KU, if they want to get a three seed, you need to at least win this game to entertain that opportunity. So a lot on
Starting point is 00:27:14 the line, Houston 17th ranked offense, sixth ranked defense. They are a very good offensive rebounding team. They force turnovers. They create chaos. And then they've got. some guards who can fill it up with Kings and Fleming's and Emmanuel Sharp that KU did a really good job on in the first game. We'll see if they can do that again here in this go-around. So that one will be on a Friday night, another 830 tip, a little late one again for KU. But again, we'll have a full preview on that one coming out as well right here on our feed with Locked on Jayhawks.
