Who do you think is KU football's best player?
You are locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks,
part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day.
What's up, Derek Johnson here, and on today's episode,
we're going to be breaking down some of the latest news,
the top 10 NCAA tournament player performances for KU basketball over the last decade.
And we'll start right here, who is the best player on this KU football team?
episodes brought to you by Odu, great organizations win because operations matter. And that is why you

All right. So we're going to power rank the KU football top 10 players before we get to fall camp here,
right? And I think this will be a good kind of exercise to get us ready for the season,
but also see how much this changes over the course of the season, right?
So quick honorable mention here for Carson Brun, who I think is an outstanding blocker.
We'll see how much he can grow in terms of being a receiving threat necessarily that I can see him winding up on this list.
But I have him honorable mention for right now.
Number 10 on the list, I have Corey Gordon.
Gordon was the transfer in from Louisville.
Before that, he was at Baylor over his three seasons of D1, Power 4 football, 118 tackles,
eight past deflections, and three interceptions.
Solid pro football focus grade last year, 67.5.
he's always been somebody who's been a good run defender.
The coverage has been a little bit more hit or miss,
but he's just a consistently solid player.
And so I think when it's all said and done,
maybe there will be somebody else who, you know,
emerges and is a flash player over him if he's just a consistent, solid piece.
But I think for right now I have him in that number 10.
Number nine on the list is Dylan Edwards for best players on KU football this year.
So Edwards, over three seasons, over 1,500 yards from scrimmage with 14 total touchdowns.
Career 5.8 yards per carry, really good there.
Career 3.6 yards after contact per carry, good numbers there.
You're talking about one in like every five of his runs go for 10 or more yards.
He's an explosive runner.
He's got all kinds of speed.
Speed we haven't seen from the running back position from KU since probably Puka Williams.
And even then, Puka certainly more.
I don't know, Puka, like, Puka was fast, but he was more like agile than he was long-term speed.
I think Edwards might have more long-term speed than Puka is, right?
Now, what's interesting here is I think with Dylan Edwards, I have a hard time seeing him finishing at number nine.
Like, he's either going to be off this list because, I mean, he's left other schools.
He left midway through Kansas State.
Like, let's say it doesn't work with him being more of a speedback instead of a power back for just getting through the season.
that would be reasons he would fall off the list.
But the reason I also don't think he's going to be here is that if this does work out
in an Andy-Kolnicki offense where they're going to find different ways to use him,
if this does work out, I think we're going to walk away from the end of the season
saying Dylan Edwards was a top five player for KU.
So right now I'm kind of splitting the difference at number nine,
but honestly, I'd be pretty surprised if he winds up there.
I think it's either going to be higher or lower.
Number eight on the list is Cam Pickett, 45 catches, 476 yards,
three touchdowns last season.
And he had, interestingly enough, 83% of his snaps came in the slot last year at Kansas.
It was only 14% the year before at Ball State.
So do we see him move back to the outside a little bit more this year for KU?
Or do we see him continuing on on the inside?
What's interesting is he's an excellent yard after catch receiver.
I mean, over 600 yards after the catch over the last two seasons combined of college football.
But the big thing is, can he improve on his hands?
You're talking about a 15% drop.
rate that's higher than you would like it. Only two contested catches last year,
according to Pro Football Focus. If those things can go up and, you know, I think he'll get a
little better at him. I think if he can be healthier this year, that will certainly help there.
He could be in store for another good season and really build off what he did last year.
But even if he just is what he was in 2025, that's a really productive, helpful player for
KU. Number seven on the list is Dak Brinkley. A little bit more projection needed for this one.
I really liked some of the flashes we saw from Brinkley.
Specifically, you think of the Arizona game when he gets one and a half sacks.
He finished the season with five TFLs and eight pressures.
And it was only 178 snaps played for Brinkley, but he had a 75 pro football focus grade.
And the reason the snaps were down, you know, he's behind Dean Miller, who was a second team all big 12 pick from the year before and was a senior.
You're behind, you know, Leroy Harris, who had an excellent season for KU.
that's why the snaps weren't there.
But he was productive when he was out there.
Now, can you keep the productivity with more snaps when you're expected?
But among the 78 edge rushers in the Big 12 with at least 50 pass rush snaps,
they're not a huge number there.
But Brinkley rated out in the top 20 among that group of 78 in the conference
in pass rush grade, pass rush win rate, and Pro Football Focus is all-encompassing PRP number,
which we're going to mention that with some other guys.
and just to tell you what that is, it's a formula that combines sacks, hits, and hurries relative to how often they rush the passers.
So basically just an all-encompassing metric on rushing the passer.
And so Brinkley is somebody who, you know, he was like it's, it's one thing to do well in a smaller role.
It's another thing when you were a former four-star crew where you're like, oh, he's only a redshirt freshman doing that.
Then you hear some good things in the spring.
Feels like he's going to have a springboard season this year.
All right, number six on the list is Amir Herring.
He was KU's starting left guard last season, wound up with a 70 pro football focus grade.
And in fact, among the 44 Big 12 guards with 300 or more blocking snaps,
he was the seventh rated guard in the league, one of the best guards in the entire Big 12 this past season.
He was better in the run than he was in the past, but he was still fine in the past.
So, you know, can he grow in the past blocking?
Good news is he did over the final five games of the season.
So the Texas Tech game was a debacle for the KU offensive line in general.
But after that game, here is Amer Herring's pass blocking grades, 80, 84, 63, which is still fine, 86 and 66.
He had zero penalties and just one quarterback hit aloud over those final five games.
So the pass blocking, improving for him, always been a good run blocker.
I think he already had a really good season last year.
If he steps up on that even more, you could be talking about an all big 12 level guard for
KU.
I'm into the top five of best players for KU football head and into fall camp.
Nick McMillan, I have very high expectations for the transfer in.
He's the highest newcomer on this list.
That's 62 catches last year for Buffalo,
981 yards,
three touchdowns,
and all Mac honors,
but really took off after the first couple of games of the season.
Really good contested catch receiver,
17 contested targets or contested catches a season ago.
He has a good mix of where he can be effective,
whether it's on short routes,
intermediate, deep balls.
He can run a good amount of different routes and have success on them.
This is an all-around receiver that I expect to be very, very productive for KU,
and I have him in at number five.
Number four on the list.
And interestingly enough, our entirety of the top four are all defensive players.
So does that tell you the defense should be better?
Again, we'll see if the results are there tells me that it should be better, right?
Four is Jalen Todd.
He had 44 tackles, two sacks, and four pass deflections.
a season ago, about a 71 pro football focus grade.
That, if you look at the 41 Big 12 corners who had at least 400 snaps played,
he was basically above average, 61st percentile in overall grade,
60th percentile in coverage grade.
So above average there, but still just a younger player getting older.
But what's interesting to me here is the usage.
Are you going to keep him in the slot where you played a lot last year?
Are you going to move him back to the outside?
I think it would be better to move him back to the outside,
If you are going to keep him in the slot, I would like to see him be used more as a blitzer and a playmaker.
He actually looked pretty good as a blitzer.
So it kind of depends what you want to do with him.
But here's the biggest thing.
You need to keep Jalen Todd in man coverage because he is really good at it.
And it's missing an opportunity when he's not.
This is super interesting.
Pro football focus stat.
If you look at the grades on man coverage compared to zone coverage,
Jalen Todd rated out in the 86th percentile among people.
big 12 corners qualified in man coverage grade.
He was only in the 12th percentile in zone coverage grade.
So struggled in zone.
He was awesome in man.
Just keep him in man, you know.
And he was super consistent too.
He had a okay game against Utah, which was, you know, just slightly below a 60 grade.
The K-State game was not good for him.
All the other games were like decent grades on pro football focus.
So I expect another year forward for him.
Can you start getting more interceptions this year?
that would obviously be helpful for KU, but I think the role will be very interesting there, too.
Number three on the list is Leroy Harris.
He had 31 tackles, four and a half sacks, eight pass deflections, gets his arms up,
and a 75 pro football focus grade among the 48 Big 12 defensive ends who qualified 300 snaps or more played.
He was in the 75th percentile overall.
He was in the 83rd percentile in pass rush grade and the 84th percentile in PRP.
If he can improve his mistackle rate and his run defense, he had the first.
fourth worst mistackle rate among those 48 qualified big 12 defense events.
If he can improve those things, he has the length, he has the pass rush, he has the ability
to be, you know, an all big 12 level player.
Number two on the list is Blake Harold, 43 tackles, five TFLs, two sacks, has such
a good get off from the interior of the defensive line.
He was really good as a redshirt freshman.
He was even better as a redshirt sophomore.
I expect him to be even better this year's a Richard Jr., right?
and his pass rush grade, his PRP, they were in the 76th percentile among interior defenders for Big 12 defensive tackles with at least 150 snaps.
From an overall grade standpoint, he was the number eight interior defender in the Big 12 among the 37 that qualified.
This is a really good defensive tackle that continues to get even better the more he plays, which he already was as a youngster for KU.
And it wouldn't shock me if he takes that step to being the number one player.
Honestly, any of these top four, it would not.
shock me if they wound up KU's best player. Number one on the list, though, for me is
Trey Lathen. He had a team high 86 tackles. He had seven tackles for loss, one and a half
sacks, one interceptions, five past deflections, two force fumbles. He had a 75 pro football
focus grade. That was good. This is fun too. He only had a 6% missed tackle rate. That's very good
there, right? So he was in the 76 percentile among the 46 big 12 linebackers who had 300 or more
total snaps played with that mistackle rate.
And then, or with the overall grade, excuse me.
And if you're looking at the miss tackle rate among linebackers with 400 or more snaps in
the big 12, he had the second best missed tackle rate.
And then he was also a really good coverage linebacker.
He had the second best coverage grade among 37 Big 12 linebackers with at least 150
coverage snaps.
The only guy in front of him was Jacob Rodriguez, who was an all-American for Texas Tech.
So I'm a big believe.
I love linebackers who can stay on the field and stay in coverage.
And that's what Lathen can do.
And I go into the season with expectations.
He is KU's best player.
But like I said, I think a lot of shuffling here.
And this will be the one that changes the most because there's a lot that can change over the course of an off season.
All right, let's switch gears a little bit.
Top 10 NCAA tournament performances by players for KU basketball over the last decade.
This is locked on Jayhawks.
All right, so today is brought to you by Fandual Sportsbook.
The biggest stage in world soccer is here.
And every match feels like it has the potential for a memorable moment.
One goal can completely change the energy of a game, shift momentum,
alter the outcome in just an instant.
That's what makes the tournament so fun and what makes tournaments occur in general so exciting
from opening kickoff to the final whistle.
And now, Fandul is offering all sorts of bonuses during the World Cup going on.
I've been getting like 50% bonuses on some of these things.
It's been, I've loved this World Cup so far.
obviously it's on local soils, so that makes it kind of more interesting there.
But there have been so many of these incredible upsets of these, whether it's, you know,
D.R. Congo drawing with Portugal or what was it, Cape Verde drawing with Spain.
Like just some of the teams getting upsets.
There's been some big high scoring goal games or just dominant performances,
if you want to see from like Germany.
USA looked really good in their first match.
It's been really fun.
And you can get futures.
You can even bet on, you know, team to advance to the semifinals.
I watched that USA game and was like, oh, maybe I should be.
put a bet on them to make the quarterfinals.
You can do that over at Fandul from the opening whistle to the final kick.
Let there be goals on Fandual.

And we're going to be ranking the top 10 NCAA tournament player performances
for KU basketball since the 2017 tourney.
If you missed it earlier this week was our 10-year.
year anniversary for Locked-on as a whole.
So we've been doing some of these different fun top-10 lists.
Thank you, every dayers who already caught some of those past top-10 lists.
So we're going back over the last 10 and C-W.
I guess it would really be the last nine NCAA tournament.
So 2017 and on or the tournaments are done.
So 2016 and before, sorry, we're just going over these last 10 years.
So 2017 and on.
Importance for the rankings, did they win?
That isn't the be-all end all, but it certainly makes it feel better, right?
the scoring matters, filling up the stat sheet.
Did you make key plays to win the game, especially late in the game?
And was it against a good opponent, right?
We're going to mention some against lesser opponents,
but that might have knocked them down a little further on the list.
A lot of honorable mentions to get to here.
Diedric Lawson, Loki had 25 points and 11 rebounds on 9 of 16 shooting,
three of six from three.
As KU dominated Northeastern in the first round,
that's an honorable mention.
How about Grady Dick against Howard in the 22?
23 first round 19 points 11 rebounds five assists three steals but also it's just howard so that doesn't
get on the list um honestly and this is a big if because it actually did happen if duan harris
didn't get the 10 second call against arkansas in the second round of the 2023 tournament and
kansas goes on to win that game he might wind up there because he was playing hurt with that that
sprained ankle or rolled ankle hit 12 points five assists four rebounds two steals shot five of nine
was impactful defensively, but that 10 second call just killed KU,
and obviously they lose the game.
Loki, Nick Timberlake had a 19-point game,
five of eight shooting as KU escaped the first round of Samford,
and he hit the key free throws laid on probably what wasn't a foul,
but is what it is.
And then honestly, KJ. Adams in that game against Samford,
I went back and looked at it.
I was like, he had 20 points on 10 of 13 and six rebounds.
That would be an honorable mention.
I felt silly not putting this one,
the list but he's on there so many other time well i guess it just gave away a little bit but
remi martin had a 23 point seven rebound game against providence that was huge in the sweet 16 but again
um he's on here so you know i wanted to get some other names a zeke mayo they lost the game but he
had 18 points six rebounds on a 91% true shooting percentage against arkansas the 2025 first round
that's an honorable mention and then finally darren peterson versus cal baptist this year had 28 points on a
56% true shooting percentage.
There's kind of the fun back and forth,
but not enough of the other box score stats in that one.
Okay, number 10 on the list is Hunter Dickinson versus Samford
in the 2024 first round.
Kansas escaped this game with Samford.
And we mentioned Timberlake and KJ having good games.
Hunter Dickinson was the biggest reason why.
Now, Sanford did have a bit of a matchup problem for him at the other end
because their center could stretch and shoot the three
and they just had to live with him hitting a couple.
but Dickinson was like he was just the biggest man on the court and he made that note 19 points 20 rebounds he had five assists four blocks and two steals on nine of 14 shooting hunters performance again it just comes in the first round against samford you end up losing the next round that's in a number 10 number nine on the list is marcus garrett against eastern washington in the 2021 first round that was a great game against groves brothers and garrett goes off he had 20s
23 points on 9 of 13 shooting.
He was four of six from three,
which is not a normal thing we see from Marcus Garrett.
He had eight rebounds.
He had three assists in the steel.
I think we can just assume Marcus Garrett had a pretty good defensive game as well.
This one gets a boost up because of the fact that the both sides of the ball,
like with the Hunter one,
there were some defensive limitations in his matchup with Garrett.
You don't have to worry about that.
So that went into number nine.
Both of those helped KU avoid a first round upset.
and then KU was blown out in the second round.
Okay, number eight on the list for best individual performances in the tournament for KU since 2017.
Remy Martin against North Carolina in the 2022 national title game.
Didn't super fill up the stat sheet.
You're talking 14 points, three rebounds, one assist, one block.
He was five to nine shooting four of six and three.
So the box scores fine.
It's solid.
The points is good.
But think about the clutchness and the key moments he had in the second half of the title game.
right. So he banks in a three in the first half, but then you look at the second half. The game is
tied 50 to 50. What does he do? He nails a three. K goes up 53 to 50. Then he gets a steal when it's
tied at 57. And on the ensuing offensive possession, he nails a three to make it 60 to 57.
Then it's 63 to 61. And he makes that incredible layup. I think it was with his left hand,
like high off the window, make it a four point lead.
Then it's tied again with 239 to go, and he makes that tough contested three, the one that I think Bill Raftery has the fun comment on to put KU up 68 to 65.
And then after Dave hits his first, Dave obviously hits the back-to-back host shots, the first one Dave hits puts Kansas up one.
Caleb Love is going for a layup.
And it looks like he's going to put North Carolina back in front.
Remy gets the block from behind.
So it's the not just the box score.
it's the moments that he had in that game were gigantic for KU.
Number seven on the list is Malik Newman against Seton Hall in the 2018 second round.
You know, this was a closer than you'd like game.
And without Malik going off in this one, you don't get some of those other special moments in the run.
He had 28 points on 8 of 14 shooting.
He goes four of eight from three.
He also added three rebounds, two assists, no turnovers in a steal.
And here's the other part of it, right?
Hitting those key moments.
Malik Newman was six for six.
free throw line in the final 36 seconds of this game, which was rather important because
Seton Hall kept coming down and nailing threes with, I think it was like Cadeen Carrington,
to answer whatever KU was doing. Number six on the list is Frank Mason against Purdue in the
2017 suite 16. I mean, just a calm, cool nine of 11 shooting for Frank against Purdue in the sweet 16.
He finished with 26 points, seven rebounds and seven assists also out of steel, right?
And it's actually a more impressive stat line than our next one up on the list.
But because this one, you ended up losing the next round and that one,
the next one we're going to get to is on a title run.
We end up going with that one a little higher.
But that Frank performance against Purdue, I mean, the KU performance is awesome.
Frank's performance was immaculate as well.
Speaking of Immaculate, Immaculate vibes, number five, hey, it's Remmy Martin again.
And we're going to go to the Creighton game in the second round of the 2022 NCAA tournament.
right 20 points on seven of 14 shooting seven rebounds four assists and a block and most of the damage was done here in the first half a little bit different here he had 16 he did hit two free throws when it was 75 to 72 to you know get you up two possessions late right that was with 31 seconds left but the second half it wasn't as much about his scoring just four points in the second half he did have three assists in the second half though and two of them came on key kansas three so there were some important moments in the second half but you
know, that was a game where KU was on upset alert.
And for Remy to come in and do what he did in the first half to keep KU afloat and give
him kind of a lead in that middle portion of the game was super important.
And obviously KU doesn't win a title if you lose in the second round, duh.
But just like, think about the narrative if KU loses in the first weekend again with all that
we've had since that point of losing in the first weekend, super important game for Remy.
All right.
Number four on the list is David McCormick versus Villanova in the 2022 Final Four.
He had 25 points, nine rebounds, an assist in the steel.
He was 10 of 12 shooting.
He was also 5 of 6 at the foul line.
He had an 84% true shooting mark.
Everybody remembers the title game because the big moments late.
But the Villanova game was the better scoring game and box score for Dave, right?
And he also was a key component of holding Eric Dixon, who this time wasn't the full-on,
all-American Eric Dixon, but was still a good player to two for seven from the floor.
And he had some key moments in the second half, right?
Nova got it down to eight.
He tips one in off a miss for KU.
It's a six point game with under six to go.
He puts KU up eight with a tough paint make.
And then he has the dunk poster to kind of seal it.
You would either say that or the Christian Brown special language one.
We're the one to seal it.
But that's in a number four.
Number three on the list is another guy from that same exact game, Ochagbosje versus Villanova, in the 2022 Final Four.
He had 21 points on six of seven shooting from three, right?
He was just not missing.
and two rebounds, one assist, one block.
And Villanova, you forget about it now because KU won the game by, what, 16 points?
Villanova made 13 threes.
Like, this was not a case of, hey, Villanova came in and Kansas actually this time they didn't shoot.
Well, no, Villanova still shot well against Kansas.
They were 42% from three on high volume.
So KU had to match with their own three-point prowess.
And if not for OCHI, you made like half of KU's threes on incredible, I mean, his true shooting
percentage and effective field goal percentage were over 100.
That is insane, right?
And how much he opened the floor for other people
because they had to start basically face guarding him, right?
And some key moments, too.
Gillespie hits a three to cut it to 10 to start the second half.
O'Shii answers.
It's an eight-point game at the dozen minute mark.
O'Chai pushes it to 11 with the three.
The first half, he's the reason KU even creates that separation and momentum, right?
So OCHI's performance was pristine in the final four.
Number two on the list is David McCormick versus North Carolina in the
2022 title game.
And honestly,
I thought about putting this one actually lower because he still was,
you know,
he still shot below 50%.
Actually,
this is what makes it super interesting,
his final two shots that he makes.
To that point in time,
he was five of 13 shooting.
So it's not like he was having a hot game and Kayu's like,
go to the hot hand.
He was not having a good game shooting.
And then he hits those two key points.
But he winds up with the double double,
15 points, 10 rebounds,
an assist in a block.
He obviously hits the two biggest shots of the game.
for KU.
And I mean, I think he also gets credit for the defense.
I know, you know, North Carolina did really well on the glass.
And I know Arbondo Baycott had a bunch of rebounds.
But Baycott was only three of 13 shooting.
And I think Dave deserves some credit on that too.
So that went in at number two.
Number one on the list, though, is Malik Newman in the 2018 elite eight against Duke.
He had 32 points that's tied the most ever by a Bill self player in an NCAA tournament game.
He goes 42% from three.
He also added seven rebounds and three steals.
And again, you're talking about somebody who clutch moment after clutch moment.
Nine of those points came in overtime.
He got KU's first points of overtime.
They're down 74, 72.
He hits a three.
And in fact, all nine of his overtime points came when KU was either down or tied when he released the ball.
The last one was when it was tied.
He makes the three to put KU up 81,78, and they never go back from there.
So like the clutchness of always.
being tied or down when you're making those shots is incredible. And what a performance,
what a March, Malik Newman. All right. Let's finish up here with a little bit of the
latest news. This is Locked on Jayhawks. We're brought to you by Odu. Running a business shouldn't

There's a lot that goes into this from an organization perspective.
You got to be on the same page with the recruiters.
You got to be on the same page with your assistant coaches.
You got to be on the same page with the GAs and the players.
You got to tame the boosters in the president, right?

We heard when KU's big game in London is going to be, it's going to be Big Noon,
at least locally here.
If you go to England, I don't know what will that be like 5 o'clock, 6 o'clock, be like a night game,
but KU will be on Big Noon for the KU Arizona State game in London.
And that's nice because if you are going out there, if you are making this trip,
If you are going through, jumping through the hoops and going through the hassle of having to, you know, make this travel, how that impacts the season, how that impacts your rest and recovery, you might as well get everything you can for it, right?
K, you've got a nice little payday to do this.
That's a good thing.
You're now on, you know, basically national TV where they're going to be talking you up the whole game before.
Those are all good things as results for KU on this that you hope leads to, you don't know, long-term revenue or recruiting or whatever it would end up being.
then also we heard about this speaking of games in foreign countries
KU women's basketball is going to be playing in Mexico this upcoming season now
I want to say they played in I guess not different country but was it Puerto Rico
they played in like a year or two ago was it this past year whatever it was right
but Kansas is going to be playing in the 2026 Cancun challenge
which is going to be on November 26 through 28th so I believe that will be during
Thanksgiving week they'll be joined by Miami of Ohio Minnesota
and Washington State.
And then two additional programs will be announced.
Colorado, Georgia, and Oregon are going to also be a part of this.
But interesting, it's going to be a four-team three-game round Robin with, I don't know.
I guess, I don't know, is there going to be like a championship game or is it just
play, you play the three teams in your pot or whatever?
I don't know how that's going to work, I guess, similar to the players era.
I do find this interesting, though, because it is KU going, you know, to another country.
and maybe this is just a difference in where the women's game is at versus where the men's game is at.
In the men's game, it feels like some of these opportunities and trips.
Like, I hope we get CQ go back to Maui one day, right?
But is that going to be a thing that's not going to happen because teams don't want to pay for the travel and they'd rather use that money for NIL.
Well, there's still NIL and stuff in the women's game, but maybe it's not to the same level.
Like, I'm sure, I don't know, like maybe the Yukons of the world it is to the same level of some of the lower.
end of things. But I just wonder if like, has it not been faced at the same level where they can
still do that? Or is this a sign that like, no, maybe KU men's basketball will go to one of these
battle for Atlantis or Maui invitationals at some point in the future, although it seems like
they're pretty linked into the players era. I just hope we get to the point where, you know, maybe,
maybe one of those, the Maui or the, you know, the Battle for Atlantis or some of these great
college basketball tournaments that we've been used to get some big sponsors that allow
them to pay the team the same way the players era is because those environments are better,
but I can understand why the teams are going to the players era. So if you can match what the
players era is doing from a money standpoint or at least get close to it and have the better
environment and the better place for fans to visit, I'd be all about that. All right, that'll
