Starting point is 00:00:00 The showdown everyone's been waiting for. AJ DeBanza and Darren Peterson. Last time these two faced off, Peterson dropped 58. DeBontza had 49. I think it's going to be fun to break this one down with Bryce Simon. You are Locked on Jayhawks. Your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks. Part of the Locked on podcast network, your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:28 What's going on, Derek Johnson with Lockdown Jayhawks here. And we have a special guest. That would be one, Bryce Simon, who, who works with Motor City Hoops, covers the Detroit Pistons, also does great work on Game Theory podcast with Sam Vassini, and it is as good of draft coverage as you're going to get over there. So check out both of those, but we're going to be breaking down. AJ DeBonsa, Darren Peterson, it is a huge matchup this weekend in Lawrence.
Starting point is 00:00:52 We're going to break down kind of both of their games, the battle for the number one pick, how it could have an impact on this matchup, and, you know, what other Jayhawks could potentially have an opportunity to play in the pros? So Bryce, thank you so much for hopping on. and join in Locked on Jayhawks here. You are a Kansin. So I guess we get a little bit of a local flavor, even though we were kind of discussing
Starting point is 00:01:12 complete opposite ends of the state here. But thanks again for coming on. So let's just start here. Darren Peterson has had an interesting season, to say the least. When he's been on the court, it has been so much fun to watch. Unfortunately, there's been some of the injury stuff. But I'm generally curious because it seems like one of the common sentiments that we're seeing right now is the explosive nature,
Starting point is 00:01:33 the driving isn't the same that maybe you saw in high school. So I guess let's just start right there. Like what did you see from Peterson out of high school and how would you compare and contrast to what he has looked like from that to what he's done at Kansas? Yeah. So first off, this is really cool to be on here. I grew up a Kansas Jayhawk fan. That has waned a little bit as I went on to play college basketball.
Starting point is 00:01:56 KU did not recruit me, which they should not have because I wasn't nearly good enough. But it is, you know, I've had a pleasure of being on a lot of really cool podcast. and coming on here with you truly is a pleasure. And it might actually be a podcast. Some of my friends and family listen to because I'm talking about the Kansas Jayhawks. So thank you for having me on. Yeah, Peterson's interesting. I was a little lower on him in general in terms of like, you know,
Starting point is 00:02:19 Bonsa and Boozer and some of these other guys coming into the year. I thought of him a little bit more. And this may have been a mis-evaluation on my part of like a point guard, right? Like he was going to be creating and running the show and all of that. and not that he can't do some of those things, but I think what we've seen so far in this time at Kansas is a little bit more comboy, a little bit more of the scoring,
Starting point is 00:02:42 and not as much of that creation. Speaking particularly to the explosion in the athleticism, I do think that that's something, I don't want to call people out, but I've seen recently like a comp of Anthony Edwards. I don't agree with that. I don't think we've seen that level of athleticism. I'm not sure I saw that level of athleticism
Starting point is 00:03:01 in high school. I comp him more to a Jamal Murray type of player, a Devin Booker type of player where I'm not saying those guys aren't athletic, but it's not Anthony Edwards, who is a top 1% athlete in the NBA. I think it's funny you bring up the comp because I swear, everybody that I have seen has had a different comp for this. Usually you end up with like a player where it's like,
Starting point is 00:03:23 okay, there's a couple names being floated out there. I've seen the Booker one before. I hadn't heard the Jamal Murray, which I love that comp. I've even seen a little myself. I'm like, is there a little Tracy McGrady in there? I mean, there's people I've seen be like, oh, it's Kobe Bryant. Like, why do you think it is so hard to comp Daron Peterson? I don't, one, I want to be clear.
Starting point is 00:03:46 I don't think that that's a bad thing, right? Like when you can't come up with the comp, I don't know that that's always a bad thing. I think also comps are just straight up hard, you know? And that's one thing with the NBA draft space as well is everybody evaluates these things differently, right? and nobody's perfect. Even NBA scouts and NBA GMs aren't perfect.
Starting point is 00:04:04 Oklahoma. I think Sam Presti is the best GM in the NBA. That's probably the best front office in the NBA. They have their own misses. Like we could go through some of their own draft misses along with all of the wins. So I think at the end of the day, everybody looks at him a little bit differently. And based off what I've been able to evaluate so far, Derek,
Starting point is 00:04:24 my thing has been and why I use the comps that I do is I haven't seen that elite NBA athleticism of an Anthony Edwards or a Kobe Bryant, right? But I do think he can knock down shots and he can win in the ways that I think a Jamal Murray or Devin Booker do where it's not as much of the athleticism. Some of it is, hey, we just got to make tough shots over contests, some of that in the mid range. And the playmaking isn't elite. That's why you don't hear him getting comp to like elite playmakers in the league is
Starting point is 00:04:57 because that's not what we've seen. thus far in his career. Yeah. So I think this is really interesting. So like if you're viewing his biggest strength right now, would that just come down to the shopmaking? And what I guess on the flip side, like what do you want to see from him the rest of the season to,
Starting point is 00:05:14 because I know I know for a while Sam had him number one and you like you said, we're pushing back a little more like you had AJ one. And now Sam has flipped or he has AJ one. Like what would you need to see from him over the final two months to get him back to that top? thought. And to be clear, like, I think both of us, like, I just refuse to move the names right now. This game Saturday, like, listen, we can't take too much stock into one game, right? But this game
Starting point is 00:05:39 Saturday will be interesting. I think the thing with Darren is just like, we haven't seen enough. I know he's played 10 games now, but it's still just like you want to see more minutes and see a little bit. Because when he's played, like I have this in my notes there. He looks like the number one pick in a lot of these games that he's that he is paid, played, excuse me, whenever you look at the synergy numbers, and I know people don't always like to hear the numbers, but I do think it's important context. He is almost 50% on catch and shoot three point attempts. So when we talk about the three point shooting, it's only brought down because the dribble three-pointer hasn't been great, but the two-point dribble jumper has been good.
Starting point is 00:06:21 He's been very good at the rim. Here's the context, though. The sample size just isn't quite enough to say, like, I, fully buy this, right, based on the numbers. You may watch it and buy it, but the numbers aren't substantial enough yet to say. Now, you can go back to some of the high school stuff and all of that. To answer your question, I would like to see a little bit more playmaking and I would like to feel a little bit better defensively.
Starting point is 00:06:47 And quite frankly, like I would like to see him play the final 10 whatever games of the season into the conference tournament into March Madness. Like I don't know what the injury stuff is going to do to his draft stock because I don't have that type of intel. But if I'm a team, I am paying very close attention to his medicals to make sure this was just kind of random stuff. And there's no biomechanics, anything like that that I should be concerned about. Now the flip side, we get to see AJ DeBonson in this game as well. And I mean, just a freak athlete of a player like in the most positive way out there. So when you look at DeBonza, the one thing that I found interesting, you go six of 24 in the Arizona game.
Starting point is 00:07:30 And I think Arizona is probably as built as any team in the country to deal with AJ DeBonza from a body's perspective and having the rim protection. KU has rim protection in terms of getting blocked shots, but they're not deep at the front court. And it's more springy athlete than it is pure physical size necessarily with Flore and Tiller. So how do you kind of see Kansas having to match up with a player like DeBon's? and what his strengths are. So I was thinking about this today. I was like, who's taking this matchup? I would, like, I would be a little nervous to put Bryson on him.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Listen, AJ doesn't create a ton of space. And this is, if you ask Sam right now, we were just talking about it yesterday. This is one of his concerns in terms of evaluating him as a top three pick, right? The shot diet can be very difficult. I do think AJ can create separation in the midrange. He can cover so much ground. He doesn't have a lot of wiggled side to side. So I would be interesting if the coaching staff would decide like, hey,
Starting point is 00:08:29 we're actually going to let Tiller guard him play off a little bit and then see if he can knock down shots and go from there. Because a guy like, you know, I assume Trey will start on him. Like that makes the most sense. And, you know, at 6-7 or whatever he is, I think that probably makes sense. But I am interested to see how Kansas approaches this and how they defend him in general. You don't guard AJ DeBanza in the same way you don't guard Darren Peterson with one guy, right? Like you defend those guys with a guy and then scheme. And I think you can scheme and have your help and all of that to try to slow him down.
Starting point is 00:09:08 A lot of it comes down to whether AJ makes shots or not. Like I know people don't love to hear that. Sometimes it just, it is a make or miss game. And with DeBanza, especially because he can elevate over contest, is he going to knock him down or does he not in the game against Utah where he scored 40 plus he knocked down shots including three's yeah and i guess finding a way to help without helping off richie saunders because of the richie richie is a very key factor of this i love richie saunders i think he's i know we're going to talk about other k u draft prospects at some point other if you're really into NBA draft
Starting point is 00:09:41 prospects if you're watching this richie saunders is a name to keep an eye on because his elite skill is something the NBA covets and i think he's a little underrated in some of the other things he does as well. I think he's going to get drafted this season. Okay, well, I want to flip that question. Who do we think guards Darren Peterson? And then we'll get into a little bit if they switch on to each other, who maybe has the advantage there. This is locked on Jayhawks. You can hit up the link in the show notes, locked on podcast.com slash everydayer. Okay, so kind of teasing that question there, Bryce. Do you think Richie Saunders could be the one who guards Darren Peterson? Yeah, it could be. I wonder Kinar Davis is another player that might be able to take that match up. Right, probably a little bit too small.
Starting point is 00:11:26 Like that's what makes Darren really tough is he has a little bit of size and we've seen him try to go to like the mid post. Like if he gets a matchup he likes, he will post you up and KU will run designed actions baseline out of bounds, et cetera, to get him that. So I do think you have to keep some size on Darren Peterson. So I think Saunders could be an option. Karnar Davis could be an option. And then as you mentioned, I mean, I just can't imagine it would be disappointing to not get
Starting point is 00:11:53 multiple possessions in this game of those two guys defending each other and whatever, whether it's true isolation, you know, Darren running off a screen and AJ trying to chase him off said screen, whatever. It would be disappointing if we don't get multiple of those in this game. And listen, AJ's defense has been called into question and this would be a great opportunity with all eyes on them, not just Jayhawk bands, but the entire college basketball and NBA draft community and him to show out like, hey, I can sit down and guard a premium perimeter score like Darren Peterson. So this is a big time opportunity for AJ DeBanza.
Starting point is 00:12:31 Yeah, and I think he was guarding him at times during the high school meeting last time they met. So maybe we see, I mean, we know Kansas switches. Now Kansas said some games where they've switched one through three, some games, a majority of the time where they've switched one through five. From a standpoint of guarding BYU, do you think it makes more sense to switch one through five, one through four, one through three, what do you think would be best for KU here? Yeah. So I think the biggest worry would be, again, if you're with, so here's the thing. If the staff feels comfortable letting DeBonsa take jump shots, right, playing off of him a
Starting point is 00:13:02 little bit and letting him shoot, I could see them saying like, hey, we can switch one through five and Florey and Bryson can play off of him a little bit. We'll give a little bit of help where we can give help from and we'll live. I think the one that's a little bit nervous there would maybe. be like a Rob Wright. Like if you're switching one through five, Rob Wright, like I know we've mentioned Richie Saunders multiple times as an NBA draft prospect,
Starting point is 00:13:26 but like that is also a dude that is a very good player. He was a very good high school player. He was on the very well known Montvird team that had Cooper Flagg and Derek Queen and all of those guys. That would be the matchup that maybe would make me a little bit nervous. And then also because they have guys that can knock down threes in a Richie Saunders, if you get into switches and you can't hold up,
Starting point is 00:13:52 now your help is coming and then they're spraying out to guys that can knock down shots. Yeah, I'm going to be really interested to see if both guys can take over how the injury kind of impacts Darren Peterson with the ankle that caused them missed the K-State game, the cramping and the hamstring stuff that's caused them to be out for some of the other action. Now, if I were to tell you, fast forward whatever, two months from right now, and one of these two teams wound up getting hot, making it to a final four.
Starting point is 00:14:20 Which player, Darren Peterson or AJ DeBonsa, do you think would have a better chance to kind of, I don't know, carry their team to, I'm trying to think where the final four is this year, wherever the final four is. I think, hmm, that's a good question. Who do I think has the better chance to carry their team?
Starting point is 00:14:43 I kind of like this KU team. I'll go Homer here. I'll just say Darren Peterson. But what I do like, like, I, I, I really enjoy, listen, I watch games from an NBA draft perspective. Okay. Derek, like, they're essentially solely. But I find myself, like, really gravitating to a Trey White. Like, I enjoy watching that dude play basketball.
Starting point is 00:15:05 You know, Melvin Council Jr. as well, don't want to free. Even El Marco, like, going, listen, I was watching El Marco when he was in high school. And then obviously, you know, he dealt with the injury and all of that. So like there's like some guys on this team that I really like. So I think even more than just like, would it be Darren or would it be AJ? I like a lot of guys on BYU as well. Kibakata is a really nice player, a big man with a ton of injury. Energy.
Starting point is 00:15:28 That would be a great matchup for Flory as well. But I think I just kind of enjoy some of these unheralded KU quote unquote role players that have stepped up in huge moments, moments, excuse me, when Darren Peterson hasn't been available. I've really enjoyed that. You know what I mean? Yeah, no, it's been fun for fans. And Melvin Council is kind of a cult hero at this point. So I actually want to touch on some of those guys.
Starting point is 00:15:53 If any of them have a chance at maybe getting drafted or maybe get into two-way or maybe future draft picks. So we'll touch on those in a second after this next break. This episode of the show is brought to you by Mazda moving the game forward. For those who show there's more to the score than what's on screen. And you know what? Melvin Council has moved the game forward. this year for KU, whether it's been with Darren Peterson out or when he's in the lineup, Melvin Council going for those over 30 points at NC State to help KU pull off a big road win.
Starting point is 00:16:26 He was in the halls with the students camping out before the game earlier today and was barking with the students who always bark at him when he makes a big play because if you ain't a dog, your dog food. And these are the moments that remind us what it really takes to raise the bar. It's that extra work off the court, dialing in every detail, giving it that extra fire, that grit and never quit attitude. We put that same passion into every model with Mazda. Highlights make the real what it took to get there makes it count. There's more to a Mazda because there's more to you.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Thanks again for joining us here on Locked on Jayhawks. Derek Johnson here with Bryce Simon, who you can catch again with Motor City Hoops talking Detroit Pistons. You can also catch him on the game theory podcast with Sam Vassini breaking down the NBA draft. So let's just start with Flory Budunga. And, you know, it's interesting. He's somebody that I'll see on different. mock draft sites kind of popping up in that second round area.
Starting point is 00:17:21 Somebody who is more of an undersized center doesn't shoot threes. He's obviously a very good athlete. Do you think Flory at this point, we'll see how the final couple months ago, would he be better served coming back to school or do you think entering the draft? So, I mean, I think Flory's probably a guy that should test and see what teams think about him and all of that. My guess would be Floyd Badoo will be back in college basketball next year. and a large part of these decisions anymore. This is come.
Starting point is 00:17:49 Everybody talks about the NIL landscape and how it just has changed roster construction and college basketball. It's also changed the NBA draft side of things, right? Like guys that would normally stay in that were even maybe into the first round can go get a ton of money. Now, I'm not talking about that, you know, every year. It's like, oh, Cooper Flagg's going to say. I saw something the other day like AJ DeBons, it may stay at BYU.
Starting point is 00:18:13 And like, I mean, those guys are turning down a lot of. money. Like even if even if the bonds had got $10 million to come back to BYU, his rookie scale deal being the number one, number two, number three pick, I still don't think it's worth that risk. When you get later in the draft or definitely into a second round like where Flory is at right now, whatever he would get in NIL, whether it be at Kansas or somewhere else, it does start to make more sense to just stay back, improve that draft stock and go from there. I do think Flore has made strides this year. I think we've seen that. The rebounding, the shot blocking, all of that. I do think that we would probably see him back in college basketball next season.
Starting point is 00:18:53 I tend to lean that way as well. I think it's just been inconsistent this year, which makes sense for a younger big. I mean, I don't think he started playing basketball till, I don't know, like high school or something like that. So it makes sense to me, but it does feel like one of those coin flips that'll kind of depend. Now, as far as some of those role players we were talking about, Trey White and Melvin Council have kind of broken out for Kansas this year. Which of those two players do you think has a better chance of getting some sort of contract, right, whether it is a late second round pick or a two-way contract, Exhibit 10, whatever it ends up being. I do wonder if Trey maybe has the better chance just because, you know,
Starting point is 00:19:29 in general, the field goal percentage for his career is a little bit better than Melvin Council. He's a little bit bigger than Melvin Council. Like whenever you get to these guys, it's hard to be the smaller player. when we're talking about like surviving on a two way and all of that. So I kind of tend to lean to the bigger player. Obviously, Trey is kind of having an outlier three point shooting season. I don't mean that to be negative. Just at the end of the day,
Starting point is 00:19:55 this isn't how he shot up until this season from the three point line. Now, here's the encouraging part. This guy is almost 80% on his career from the free throw line. And I know that that indicator is something that people will look to. He can rebound. He creates a little bit. Like, so I think Trey is probably the answer here. I also wonder, and listen, like, I want to be clear here.
Starting point is 00:20:17 I don't know anything. I'm not an expert in this, but like, I do wonder with Melvin having a couple juco years in there, what his status could end up being for next season. I have no idea. Kansas fans are hoping. Kansas fans are hoping. I'm not trying to provide false hope or anything like that. It's just, it's in this day and age, in the landscape of where college basketball,
Starting point is 00:20:41 is right now, I would not be shocked if Melbourne Council ended up having another year of being able to come back and play. Yeah, that that's Kansas fans. That is a dream come true if that ends up happening at this point in time. Okay, what about some future guys who I would, you know, be pretty shocked if they entered for 2026, but maybe down the road, whether it's 2027 or 28. I know Cole Rosario was somebody that was kind of on your guy's radar before the season. He's kind of fallen out of the rotation at this point. Bryson Tiller has. been somebody that we didn't really know what to expect. And all of a sudden, now he's a starter.
Starting point is 00:21:15 Which of those two guys do you think have the better long-term shot in the NBA? Yeah, I would say Tiller right now. Sam, I think, was a little higher on Rosario, like, coming into the season and, like, you know, would even bring him up when we were doing mocks before the season, he'd be like, you know, Cole Rosario's an interesting name here, you know, all of that. I think Tiller again, I don't want to like overstate the size thing. Cole Rosario is not, like, tiny by any measure whatsoever. right and if he can really shoot it that's going to be obviously very important but tiller at his size
Starting point is 00:21:47 with the potential skill level that he can provide as you know a guy that maybe can step out and really space the floor and face up and knock down shots along with the rebounding along with the defense i could see tiller being a guy is my guess is Derek that you will see bryson tiller on a lot of early season mocks next year right like whenever we're going into the 2026 27 college basketball season. I think we'll see Bryce and Tiller in a lot of first round mock drafts, I think more so than Cole Rosario. I don't know how much you,
Starting point is 00:22:22 I don't want to throw you in a situation where you're focusing on this class with how great it has been, all these great freshmen. I don't know how much time you've gotten to look ahead to the following years class at all. But I do know, obviously, that's kind of another storyline here locally for Kansas fans that Taylin Kenny, who is the number one point card recruit in the class, is going to be at this game visiting. committed to KU. And then Tyrant Stokes,
Starting point is 00:22:43 the number one player in the class overall, the rumors of that he might be visiting. I don't know. I haven't seen anything official yet, but everybody seems to leaning that way. Do you have any thoughts on either of their games if you've gotten to dig into them at all? So I have not watched Kenny.
Starting point is 00:23:01 You know, again, I cover the NBA as well. You're a busy man. I didn't want to throw you in an uncomfortable spot. You're good. No, you're good. I know. Yeah. That is what some people do, right?
Starting point is 00:23:11 Like some people are fully in this space. They're already looking to 2027. It's just not for me. I've seen Tyrone Stokes play because I will eventually watch high school games and the YBL circuit and all of the different circuits and all of that. So I've seen Stokes play, you know, physical wing forward that can really score and all of that. I think I've seen Kenny play, but it's not like I have great notes on that. So I here's one thing I learned, Derek. don't speak on something that you don't know because people are going to know that you don't know it.
Starting point is 00:23:43 So I will leave it there and we can go on to the next thing. No, I actually love that answer because, yeah, sometimes it's the fake until you make it. And I appreciate the honesty there. But that just means, hey, Tyrant Soakes hopefully commits the KU and then we can have you on next year to talk about that. That would be great. I will tell you this. By the end of the summer, I will have as much scouting notes on Tyrant Stokes as you can possibly need. Love it, love it.
Starting point is 00:24:07 Okay, fun one to finish here. We're going to tap into your draft mind here. So I'm going to let you pick four skills of players that you think are going to be in the 20-26 draft. So the only rule is you can only pick, you can't pick the same player for two or three skills. Sure. So you could pick somebody's height. You could pick somebody's shooting. You could pick somebody's speed or quickness or defensive or, I don't know, their hands or whatever it is. You have four skills from four different players to make the best draft prospect this year you can.
Starting point is 00:24:36 The floor is yours. Okay. So you mentioned this. I don't know if it's on air or off air, but I'm going to go with Kingston's swimming speed. Like, Derek, that dude, that dude has a gear that not many people have. And that's why a guy that is a quote unquote smaller guard. And I know he's not like tiny in the way that Tyler Tanner at Vanderbilt is.
Starting point is 00:24:57 But that's why he's still where he's at on big boards, right? Because the dude just has this level of explosion and speed. Okay. number two, I'm going to go Darren Peterson shooting. The dude has been a legit shooter this year, like a real shooter. I'm going to play a little bit of Homer here. I will give a quick shout out to Milan Manchilovich at Iowa State because that dude is also a real shooter. And if you can just take his shooting and put it into some other athletic bodies and some of those things, that is a real skill.
Starting point is 00:25:32 But I didn't want to go to Iowa State guys because I'm going to go to another Iowa State in just a second. I'm going to go Bennett Sturts and his composure and the way he plays the game and controls the game. Bennett Sturts is not my number one point guard. He's not my number two point guard. But just the way he understands the offensive scheme that he's in for. So for people who don't know, Bennett Sturts was playing at Drake last year. He started his career at Northwest Missouri State with his coach.
Starting point is 00:26:01 They went to Drake together. Now they're at Iowa together. And like he is. just he runs he is a coach on the floor in every sense of the cliche right so i will take his composure and then i will again make k u fans mad and i will take killian torres defense i think that dude absolutely guards man um he gets after it he's going to be a draft pick someday i don't know if the offense is good enough for it this year but i think it will be eventually and i just absolutely love that with a honorable mention to
Starting point is 00:26:36 to Caleb Wilson's athleticism. Caleb Wilson at North Carolina is just a sick, sick athlete. The other thing I recognize as I was doing this is like, I want to pick a lot of big 12 players. Like there's a lot of, I was going to say. These are all guys that KU either has played or will play.
Starting point is 00:26:54 And then the one with Iowa is like Ben McCollum's a guy that people are watching more of here because they're like when Bill self-retires, could they take a look at him? So it's kind of funny. Yes, it's a, the big 12 is so good. I mean, we've got, we haven't talked, you know, I could have done something with Coa Pete here. You know, like Jojo Tuggler at Houston is a defensive guy. I was just watching Emmanuel Sharp film today.
Starting point is 00:27:17 I think that dude is a, like, you talk about dogs earlier and I don't want to, you know, offend KU fans. But Emmanuel Sharp is a dog, man. Like that dude flat out gets after it as most Houston players do. I could have done Richie Saunders shooting. The Big 12 is so good, man. It is so good. Lots of really good players that are a lot of. fun to watch. And listen, man, like KU's had a good season. I know it's been a little up and down.
Starting point is 00:27:40 They fall out of the top 25. Looks like it's going to get worse without Aaron Peterson playing. And that's why I love what counsel and Tray White and El Marco, you know, even some of these guys in smaller minutes have come in and made an impact in specific games. Awesome, man. Well, great stuff. I really appreciate you coming on here. Where can everybody find all your work? So I am Motor City Hoops on Twitter. If you actually want basketball content, that's what you should follow. It is Pistons. It is NBA draft.
Starting point is 00:28:11 It is NBA at large. Do not follow my personal account. If you go there, you will see I don't tweet about anything other than maybe some of the high school kids that I coach. I am a teacher and a coach in my real life. And that's how I actually make money and support my family. So don't follow my personal account unless you just want to say hello for whatever reason. I will respond. Motor City Hoops substack, the game theory substack, the game theory podcast.
Starting point is 00:28:36 All of that stuff is out there again. You're looking at NBA draft, NBA-centric content with all of those things. Bryce Simon, one of the best in the business. I really do appreciate it, man. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah, I had a blast. All right.
