Starting point is 00:00:00 There's a big man who reminds me a lot of Tauric Black, and I would love for the Jayhawks deal after him, David Dixon. You are Locked on Jayhawks, your daily podcast on the Kansas Jayhawks, part of the Locked on Podcast Network, your team every day. What's up there, Johnson here, and on this bonus episode, we're going to take a portal deep dive into David Dixon, who's trying to get eligible as part of this five and five stuff. and reminds me a lot of former Jayhawk Tark Black, who I think was a fan favorite for a one-year transfer coming in. I think we're making a lot of sense for Kansas to kick the tires on. We're going to break down his game, scouting report, potential fit with KU and more. Let's start here. Dixon is a 6-foot-9, 230-pound big man from Memphis, Tennessee. He spent all four years at Duquesne out of the Atlantic 10 conference.
Starting point is 00:01:01 And according to the team's website, he is one of just three. two players in Duquesne history to accumulate career totals of at least 100 blocks, which 129, and 100 dunks of which he had 100 or 4. I don't know how far back they have for dunks and everything. But over four seasons at Duques, he averaged six and a half points, four point seven rebounds, 1.4 blocks per game. And mostly of note is this past season, where as a fourth year player, he started 23 of 33 appearances for the Dukes. He played 22 and a half minutes per game and averaged 8.2 points,
Starting point is 00:01:38 5.5 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.7 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game. He also shot 60% from the floor and 72% at the foul line. And he played well against better opponents. He had a better two point percentage. He had a better offensive rebound rate. He had a better block rate. He had a better steal rate among the 13 games that he played against Ken Palm Top 100 teams. this past season. Now, metrically, he was in the 59th percentile in RAPM, so averaged above average there. Seventy-ninth percentile in windchairs per 40. That's good. Seventy-or-eighthirtle in P-E-R, so good measure of efficiency. And then in the 87th percentile in wins above replacement player. And in terms of on-off net rating, he has been a positive
Starting point is 00:02:24 contributor to the Duquesne program by, you know, the on-off number, each of the last three seasons, averaging out to making the team about six points better per 100 possessions each of the last three seasons overall, right? So he's currently in a suit in North Carolina. That's the, I believe the same suit that like Darien Williams is part of that I believe he's eligible right now. But we'll wait and see what happens with some of the appealing process and where it goes with the NCAA. But again, I believe right now he is eligible. This would be the type of TARC black addition to me, right? Kansas added Tark Black a one-year stopgap big man to come in and be a veteran presence to be able to, you know, give you, I guess a couple of reasons.
Starting point is 00:03:10 One, be a veteran leader for Joel Embed. And two, give you basically an insurance option in case a freshman big man. Obviously, Embed did work out for Kansas, though, you know, the injury prevented it from working out in the postseason, basically give you another option to go to. think that would be similar for what you're looking for here you're talking about a big man that you'd be looking to come in and be a veteran and it's like okay ideally paulambia is a freak show and blocking all these shots and using the seven nine wingspan and really fun for k u but this gives you a veteran option to look to and somebody for him to kind of you know i don't know learn from about some of the veteran uh ability of it and here's the other part of it like tarc black everything i always heard was like
Starting point is 00:03:56 great dude, great locker room presence. And that is helpful, obviously, for a team in a locker room. I mean, I don't have personal reports on this from David Dixon, but like he was named the Duquesne. I think it was like their male athlete of the year or something like that. I think he's like the winningest player in program history. Like, they love this dude. They love this dude over there.
Starting point is 00:04:22 So, yeah, if you could give me David Dixon, Um, as a Jayhawks big man edition. I mean, outside of Kba, Kada, like, that's probably, I don't know, you could even make a case to me that like, from a leadership perspective, would you rather have Dixon? Let's not go down that road. I would love David Dixon to be a Kansas Jayhawk. Let's get to a scouting report next. Before the season even kicks off, everyone's making predictions. Who wins the division?
Starting point is 00:04:53 Who makes the playoffs? Who's lifting the trophy at season's end? Well, on Calci, America's number one prediction market platform, you can trade those. predictions in a live market. Will Kansas go bowling in 2026? Right now, the Jayhawks are trading at a 52% probability to win six or
Starting point is 00:05:10 more games, meaning a $100 trade would pay out about $154.84.81 or over a $50 net if they get to six wins this season. On Calci, you are trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house. And as the probability
Starting point is 00:05:25 changes, you can buy in and out of your position. Trade the draft pick, the game, and more on CalShe. Thanks you for joining us here. Our scouting report for David,
Starting point is 00:06:03 Dixon here. Let's start with the strengths. He is extremely active on the defensive side of the court. You're talking to 98th percentile in Hakeem rate. Again, what is Hakeem right? It is a combination of block plus steel rate, right? And that composed of him being really good at both. He was in the 95th percentile of steel and block rate or better at both, right? And if you go watch this dude shot block highlights, they're not just little, oh, just, you know, pat the ball away, like, uh, whatever. This dude is like it's like he's trying to like hurt people in the front row like he is like swatting the ball so violently so hard out of bounds that you would not want to bring your children court side to a basketball game uh it's fun to watch right and even in in the games he played against quad one and quad two
Starting point is 00:06:50 uh opponents he was in the 98th percentile in just those games in heikim rate so even in scaling up against the better teams he still was able to be a defensive menace it's also a really good rebounder 82nd percentile on offensive rebound rate, 74th percentile in defensive rebound rate. So, you know, he's again, giving you good stuff on the glass. He's giving you good stuff on defense. And by the way, back to those, you know, quad one and quad two numbers, even if we'll look at rebound rate, those maintain. He was actually even better in defensive rebound rate.
Starting point is 00:07:23 He was in the 80th percentile or better in both offensive and defensive rebound rate in the games he played against quad one and quad two opponents. Also, an efficient player at the rim. 73rd percentile, according to CBB analytics. According to CBB shot charts, he shot about 67% at the rim, and only 50% of those were assisted. If you've been tracking along with us in the offseason here, we've talked a lot about Florida Bedunga and how he shot like 72% at the rim. So that's, you know, five percentage points.
Starting point is 00:07:53 That's a little chunk better than Dixon, but 65% of his makes were assisted. Only 50% of David Dixon's makes were assisted. What that tells me is that Flory, you know, his efficiency at the rim was a little bit more dependent on getting an alley-up or getting someone to pass him the ball for dunk than maybe Dixon's is. And when you look at, again, Dixon's highlights, like he does have a little bit of an ability to take a dribble and drive in or make a hook shot or kind of work around the lane, right? And then going back to what we mentioned earlier, from everything that I've seen online or that it appears to be seems like a great locker room presence and seems to play really hard. and play with a physical nature. Feels like a guy that you would want in your locker room, feels like a guy that Bill Self would like,
Starting point is 00:08:36 feels like a guy that does things that Bill Self would like, and that would do things that KU has at the center position. Some of the weaknesses, he does turn it over too much. You're talking to 13th percentile turnover rate. Now, if he comes to Kansas, probably ask to do a little bit less than at Duquesne where you're the winningest player in program history, right? And so maybe in your specific role,
Starting point is 00:08:58 that number can dial down a little bit here, right? it's also not a super complex or potent offensive game like i said he's efficient at the rim he can hit the occasional hook shot or make the occasional nice move up up in there um but he's you know 11 points per game this past like or or it 8.9 points per game or whatever it was this past season like he's not going to be somebody who's averaging double figures for you right um and overall he did finish in the bottom third percentile um of the country in post up adjusted efficiency and Biggs cutting and rolling efficiency. Part of that could be the guards that are feeding you the basketball,
Starting point is 00:09:36 at least the cutting and rolling one. But he's not going to be an offensive hub. But when you look at KU's center position, that kind of lines up with what KU's center position has anyway. So with this be a take, what's the fit? Let's get to that next. Thanks for joining us. In today's episode is brought to you by GameTime.
Starting point is 00:09:57 There are more live events than ever worth seeing right now. Games, concert, comedy shows, festivals, hard part usually isn't deciding what you want to attend. It's actually getting the tickets between long wait times, confusing checkout processes and surprise fees. Buying tickets can sometimes feel harder than it really should. That's why so many fans are turning to game time. It's the app built to make a buying ticket simple with upfront pricing,
Starting point is 00:10:20 seat views before you buy an exclusive savings opportunities that help you get to the events you want without the usual hassle. You know, you can even plan ahead, right? If there's going to be a weekend that you're going to be in town, you want to go out to a game like let's say for instance you're going to be in town October 24th right you want to go to the KU Baylor game you can even get tickets that far in advance over on game time I'm looking cheapest ticket for $64 that's a pretty good deal there right for a big 12 game you can sit in the corner of the end zone for like 94 bucks I'm looking over here and you can see the seat views so you know what you're getting into take the guesswork out of buying tickets to every type of event with game time download the game time app create an account and use code locked on for $20 off your first purchase terms apply again great in account redeem code locked on LOC KED on for $20 off download the game time app today. Thanks you have for joining us here on the locked on Jayhawks.
Starting point is 00:11:17 All right. So what is the fit here for David Dixon? He's a five man. Again, he'd be a little bit smaller than Reeves and Mbia, but still six nine, two 30 has good weight. It seems to have really long arms. I haven't seen a wingspan. I just based on watching him, wouldn't be shocked if it's seven,
Starting point is 00:11:34 foot plus. This should be the Tark Black type of addition, right? If he comes in and he's a veteran, you feel comfortable starting him, great. If he needs to come off the bench and play a role, great, right? And if that's because Paul and Bia is balling out, even better. So I look at this guy as being somebody who checks all the boxes I would want from somebody who could range from starting center to backup center. Are you a good locker room presence?
Starting point is 00:12:04 yes are you a veteran player yes are you a good defender absolutely can you rebound the basketball you bet like can throw down some fun dunks gonna be a fun player this just kind of fits everything that i would want like this is my again like if you're making the comparison just to circle back to this the kba kata thing kata probably has a higher ceiling here um kata there's another level of like wingspan and athleticism there that you get even more blocked shots and rebounds, I think, from Kada than here. But you might actually have even more offensive ability here. And without knowing what Kba Kada brings to a locker room, if we know this is a plus, you could convince me, I mean, this is probably a cheaper ad than Kba Kada. So if that's a hurdle for you with Kada,
Starting point is 00:12:55 I'd be all about David Dixon, man. And going back to, you know, what's happening with, with Trey White and Melvin counsel, it's going to be tough for those guys to stay eligible, or at least in the case of Trayway. Like if Melvin Counsel can get eligible, that might be a different situation because it's a different case. But Tray White, even if he gets eligible, there's no guarantee he'll stay eligible by the time we get to October, you know, things to get overturned in the court process. And I guess you could say his same thing here for David Nixon because, you know, he's in one of these cases as well. But I guess I'm to a point now where it's just like, I think you got to make a move. I don't want to go into the season with those two spots open, you know? And to me,
Starting point is 00:13:35 David Dixon would make a lot of sense. He would fit what KU was already doing at the center position. He would bring in a lot of things that I really like. I like his game. Do it. David Dixon, be a Jayhawk. Kansas have interest in David Dixon. I don't know. Haven't seen any interest. So probably wouldn't happen, but a man can dream. All right, that'll do for this episode of Locked Locked on Jayhawks. You can find a show anywhere you get your podcast, including on our YouTube page where you can like and subscribe to the show.
