Tori Lavello is going back to the Diamondback.
So what does that mean for the Mariners manager search?
Colby, hit it.
You are Locked-on Mariners.
Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast.
Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Ahoy, sailors, it is Thursday, October 1st, 2026.
My name is Tadding Gisalas.
I'm joined as always by my host, Colby Patneau.
This episode is brought to you by Fandul.

with Fandual Rewards Club.
Every week, check the Fandual app to see what's waiting for you.
On today's show, I'm going to rank the 15 moments
that perfectly represented this season from hell the Mariners just had.
But first, we've got some news to go over.
Tori Lavello, who was thought to be the early favorite
to be the Mariners new manager,
is reportedly returning to the Diamondbacks on a two-year deal per Nick Pichro.
Apologies to Nick, if I got that pronunciation wrong.
of the Arizona Republic.
So now what, Colby?
Yeah.
This kind of puts us back at square one.
I think, you know, you and I and a lot of people had just kind of not really assumed,
but I think we all thought that Lavello was going to be the heavy frontrunner.
Zeroed at all.
Yeah.
And it also seemed that...
It also seems that, you know, he was the guy who made the most sense.
It seemed like Arizona wasn't going to bring him back.
And they gave him a two-year deal.
So he is no longer an option.
But, you know, thankfully we did at least talk about some other candidates.
And we do have more information from Jerry and Justin, obviously from Monday and Tuesday,
about what they would like in a manager.
So if we're to believe them and their preference would be,
some experience as a manager.
I think this certainly bumps up the case for Rocco Baldelli and Brandon Hyde,
two guys who managed mid-market teams and got them both to the playoffs.
And, you know, Baldelli in particular is, I mean, Hyde, actually.
They're both seen as like analytical thinkers and they understand the new game.
And they're, Rocco is really, you know, known for managing the bullpen quite well and all of that.
And so, yeah, you kind of got, you know, shafted at the beginning of a rebuild by the twins.
Hyde obviously oversaw the young, terrible Orioles teams and took them to 100-win season.
And then fortunately stuck around to see the collapse of that.
But Hyde, you know, worked with the Ray's front office this last year and was an active participant as a consultant or advisor, whatever, the role technically.
He was heavily involved in their trade deadline, according to John.
Passing.
His opinion carried a lot of weight in the room, according to passing as well.
So those are two guys that I think immediately jumped to the front of the line here in Rocco
and Hyde, because they are analytical.
They are on the younger side of being a manager, and they have had experience and gotten
mid-market teams to the playoffs before.
Stephen Vogue is still kind of a pipe dream that you can at least discuss once the Guardian season
is over.
But again, I think that's still more of a pipe dream than anything.
So we're going to believe them that experience matters.
I don't think that they're going to go like a David Ross type of guy.
I don't know if they're going to pay him enough money to entice him.
And we've talked about Melvin and Madden and guys like that sure doesn't seem like the Mariners are going to go down that route.
So I think Baldelli and Hyde are probably the two I would consider them to be the favorites now.
But also I think this makes it more likely that the Mariners might go with somebody who doesn't have managerial experience.
at least at the major league level.
So, yeah, I think for now, I would say that Baldelli kind of becomes my new favorite favorite.
I don't really have a favorite.
I just don't know if any of these guys are going to be good at the job or not.
But I do like the kind of the resume of Baldelli.
I like what I've heard about the guy.
So I do think Baldelli is probably the guy I would pick now.
But Brandon Hyde is certainly interesting.
And there's also several candidates who don't have managerial experience that I would also be very
interested in and this search is going to be
exhaustive according to Jerry and Justin
and that's good so they should find the right
guy and ultimately they have
to pick the right guy we just know now
that it won't be Tori Lavello
and I hope that search extends
all the way to our guy
Rodney Lanaris
who for those of you that didn't watch our episode
when we kind of went down our list
of favorites
Lanaris has managed
at so many different levels of the game
he's worked in the Asher
Stro's organization oversaw the development of Jose Altuve and George Springer and Carlos
Correa and guys like that.
He's been working under Kevin Cash now for the last few years as his bench coach.
He was the manager of the 2023 Dominican Republic team in the World Baseball Classic.
So he's worked a little bit with Julio.
He's bilingual, just a very well-respected guy.
I love the Rodney Lanaris idea.
I will continue to hammer that home.
And I really do hope that they give him a shot.
Obviously, he's in the middle of a playoff race, and they're probably going to make a deep playoff run and maybe even a World Series run.
So you might have to wait on getting, you know, connected with him.
But, you know, the Mariners have said, and Jerry Depoto specifically has said that, you know, this will take as long as it takes, right?
Like they haven't put a, they haven't put a deadline on hiring the next manager.
And I don't think that they necessarily should.
And then obviously there's Kai Correa, who's a favorite, especially of our friends, T.J. and Lyle, all over at the Marine Layer podcast.
And there's a bunch of other guys that haven't managed before that I'm sure we'll get a chance here.
Christopher Negroen, Carson Vitaly, a couple of former Mariners coaches who might get a shot here.
Colin Calgill is.
Yeah, Raulobanias.
Colin Calgill is someone that Jeff Passen mentioned on his appearance on Brock and Salk earlier this week.
former mariner minor leager
you know
MLB veteran has worked as
the first base coach for the Reds most recently
so maybe he's an option there
a lot of different guys
that the Mariners can
and probably will talk to
over the coming weeks but yeah
Lanaris is still my guy
yeah I think so too
based on the guys who have already been linked
to the Mariners though like officially
I think Rocco is probably my favorite
but Kai Correa is certainly interesting.
Raoul, I don't put in the same bucket as Dan Wilson.
Like, I don't think that's fair to be like, oh, well, it'd be the same problems
of hiring Dan Wilson.
No, no.
Raul Obanias is just a guy that so happened to have a very good career in Seattle.
Yes.
But yeah, he is forward thinking.
He's analytical.
He's worked with some of the better teams than the league.
He's worked for the league itself.
And he is a guy who's going to be a manager, pretty much whenever he wants.
wants to be. He'll get a job the first year. He's actually, like, actively trying to be a
manager. So I think he makes a lot of sense as well. Chris Woodward, you know, former manager of
the Rangers there. He got let go right before the Rangers decided to actually spend money. And so,
but he's kind of an infield guru and he's known for being a pretty buttoned up guy, making sure
the little things are done right. So he could be somebody there. But yeah, I do think Kai Kare is
probably going to get multiple interviews. I think.
think we'll probably get our first round of interviews early next week would be my hunch.
We'll probably, you know, and we might get a list of names or we might just get like the,
the PR tweet from Mariners PR that says like, hey, we've conducted an interview with blank for our
managerial opening.
Do MLB teams do that?
Pretty sure.
I know, I know some NFL teams do that.
I'm pretty sure.
Yeah.
Well, I think they're required to in the NFL.
But, yeah, I'm pretty sure they do that.
And, you know, maybe they do, maybe they don't.
it doesn't really matter.
We'll hear about them.
They will be leaked,
even if the meritors want to keep them a secret.
So, yeah, I assume we'll start getting
like firm names and like firm interviews
started next week, early next week,
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
But we'll see how it goes.
But yeah, we just know it won't be Lavello,
Rocco Baldelli, Kai Correa, Rodney-Lanirez.
Obviously, there's a bunch of guys,
you know, the Dodgers have a couple of guys on their bench.
That would be really interesting.
So maybe we'll have to do another dive
into some other player other manager possibilities because
Lavello kind of was assumed to be the guy for the last week really
maybe even two but yeah maybe we'll do another dive
into more candidates next week but yeah not going to be Lavello
but there's still some really good candidates out there and ultimately the
Mariners have to nail it so I hope they take their time and they pick the right guy
all right coming up I'm going to rank the 15 moments that just
perfectly represented this season for the Mariners but

So I have ranked the 15 moments
that perfectly represented this just absolute garbage season
for the Mariners.
And there's like 100 other moments
that I could have listened.
it on here. So I probably missed something that you would have in your top 15. So you can yell at me
about that in the comments below. But I bowled down my list to 15 moments. And we're going to start
with maybe not the worst bullpen decision by Dan Wilson this year. But a great example of him
just doing stuff that made no sense. And in fairness to Dan, his bullpen was beaten.
hell. I'm talking about leaving Michael Rucker in to face Stephen Kwan in Cleveland in that game that
they blew, I think it was the last game of that series against the Guardians in Cleveland.
Dan had Josh Simpson ready to go in the bullpen. Rucker was already at 20 plus pitches.
It just clearly wasn't working for him. And I think Kwan at the time had a 44 WRC plus against
lefties and like a 138 against righties, something crazy like that.
So Rucker winds up walking Kwan and then Dan finally goes to Simpson.
And look, Simpson wound up not getting the job done.
He gets Bazana out, but DeLotter tied the game against him.
And then he gave up the game winner to Hoskins, but still just a baffling sequence from Dan there.
Number 14.
Coming back just to lose an extras of Miami.
So at the time, the Marlins were the hottest team in baseball.
the Mariners were coming off a nice series win against the Js themselves, but they're down for nothing early on and you're like, well, this is over.
But the offense actually showed some fight.
They weren't perfect and they blew some opportunities to put up more runs.
But they got back into the game and were able to force it to extras just for Weston Wilson to run a third on a ball hit to his right and get thrown out as the automatic runner and basically gift wrapping a win to the.
Marlins. And, you know,
Justin Hollander talked on Tuesday about
how much the Mariners beat themselves this year.
That was a great
example of it.
Number 13, going three
and three out of the All-Star break against the
Giants and the Reds. You know, so you get swept
by Miami. You lose two or three
in Tampa. And now you got to
sit on that through the All-Star break.
And remember, with the deadline looming, we
really didn't know what they were going to do.
So we were like, you have to come
out of the break strong and you got two of the
the worst teams of the National League coming to town.
And they just come out so flat in that first game against the Giants.
But then they win their next three.
And it's like, okay, here we go.
Just for them to lose the final two for the Reds.
Well, coming out of number 12,
Anders Munoz, the blown save versus the San Diego Padres.
One of the first kicks in the you know what this year.
they're up six to two.
Luke Rayley was having an awesome game.
But then the Padres get some babop bluck and Munoz gives up a big two strike single with two outs to I think Ramon Luriano, if I'm not mistaken.
And that forces Dan to have to go to Jose Ferrer because I think Munoz was at like 30 pitches at that point.
And Ferre gives up that, you know, chalk double opposite field down the line to Jackson Merrill.
and Audrey's win that game and the Mariners wind up getting swept in that series.
Number 11, a lot of you probably have this higher.
But for me, it's the non-handshake, the fateful non-handshake and everything that followed.
Really not the non-handshake itself, but everything that, you know, the fallout from that, right?
and it was so ridiculous that I was, you know,
I was naive enough to think that it was just a joke or not that serious
and I stupidly and ignorantly blew it off at first.
And while I don't know how much of an impact it truly had on the season,
and I know people have their theories on that,
it obviously set the tone for the level of dysfunction.
We saw from this team this year, you know,
from Randy Cussing out Cal to the media to his like non-apology,
apology that he first sent out and then he finally
made a better apology afterwards.
It's just, yeah, it's not a good look all around.
Number 10, Brennan Donovan's concussion.
You know, not wearing a helmet in the cage, gets concussed,
and ultimately has a season ended just like that, just brutal.
Number nine, Randy, for getting the count and getting picked off with the bases loaded,
versus the Royals.
And this is kind of the prime example of the lack of focus.
Jerry and Justin have talked about this week.
You know,
Mariners up two to one on the Royals.
Emerson Hancock is dealing.
This is his 14 strikeout game,
by the way.
They have a chance to play add on.
And then Randy thinks ball three is actually ball four.
And yeah.
Well,
Mers didn't score again in that game.
Munoz blows the save.
Julio with a play where he,
he gets too aggressive on a ball that he should have just cut off he he doesn't rolls get extra
bases out of that rolls go on to win and extras and go on to sweep the mariners
marines went one in five against the kansas city royals this year rolls were not good but
neither were the mariners radio is uh on this list i think a couple more times still by the way
which as much as i love the guy yeah he also kind of represented a lot of the things that were
wrong with this club.
Coming in
at number eight, I just wrote down, as it turns out,
relying on Matt Brash to get back was a bad idea.
Obviously, I'm being sarcastic about that.
Obviously, it was a very bad idea.
You know, you know the deal.
I've said it a billion times on here, but I'll say it again.
Mariners reportedly wanted another reliever or two on top of Sir Anthony
Dominguez.
They got zero at the deadline.
And if I had to guess, at least part of their reason not to get,
more aggressive on the reliever market was them thinking they'll get brash back which like one you needed
a guy then in there you couldn't afford to wait for best case scenario late august early september for
brash to return two you needed even more on top of brash so even if he came back he still needed
more guys and three the guy suffered multiple latch strains this season it wasn't all that surprising
he wasn't able to return it was just so poorly handled
by the front office.
And speaking of things that were poorly handled,
number seventh,
the piggyback.
Now,
like Jerry said on Monday,
the piggyback era happened
during the Mariners'
most successful stretch of the season,
but obviously it created all this confusion
and tension in the clubhouse
and it spilled over publicly.
You know,
there's obviously the footage of Luis
being upset after Dan pulled him.
There's Bryce later that night,
voicing his displeasure with it to Brad A,
them the way the White Sox game went, which Jerry specifically mentioned on Monday.
And then there was that weird stretch where everyone was supposed to piggyback once,
but then Luis and Bryce did it again.
And then they bailed on it right before the next two scheduled piggybacks.
And now, you know, Jerry has talked about how poorly the org communicated their plans of the players.
It was just an absolute mess.

So I'm ranking the 15 moments that
perfectly represented just how terrible of a season this was
for the Mariners.
it's not necessarily the 15
worst moments of the season, but
some moments that
you look at and you go, that just
perfectly sums up
this year for the Mariners.
So we're into the final six here and coming
in at number six is
that Boston game.
You know the one I'm talking about.
They're coming off, getting swept in Toronto.
The offense explodes for eight runs.
They're up by three late in the game.
Red Sox clawback within one.
but you get to the ninth with Munoz, who looks good.
He was actually kind of shoving in that inning.
But Julio once again gets way too aggressive on what should have been a Roman Anthony single.
And instead it turns into a Roman Anthony triple.
And he scores with ease.
That sends things to extras.
And there, the Red Sox throw a roll as Chapman, all the Mariners,
counter with Cooper Criswell,
which kind of goes back to the whole.
brash and getting relievers thing as well.
Yeah.
Number five, the walkoff loss in Houston.
Another game in which the Mariners came back just to lose an extras.
You know,
Altuve somehow singles on a slider and the other batters box to extend the 10th.
Then Varsho singles on a slider outside the bottom of the zone to tie the game.
Next batter, boom,
Walker, three run, home run.
Good night.
Yuck.
Number four, 22 to nothing.
The worst shutout loss in Major League Baseball in like a billion years.
You know, Julio throws the ball into the stands.
Just everything that was wrong with this team rolled into one game.
Number three, if you wanted to make this number one, I wouldn't blame you.
Randy letting the ball drop at his feet in Tampa.
Yeah.
it's probably the moment that exemplified the lack of focus Jerry and Justin have talked about as well as the dysfunction in the Mariners Clubhouse.
It's by far the most bizarre thing we saw all year.
Randy just jogging over to that ball, not even attempting to catch it despite it basically falling at his feet.
Louise staring him down after giving up the home run.
That was the moment where it was like, yeah, we've got problems on this club.
Number two, the Joe Adele game.
Do I need to say anything else?
Now, look, it's not like this game had major ramifications on the season,
but it was the moment in which we all should have known this is going to be a long year.
Joe Adele, by the way, finished the season with negative six outs above average and negative eight defensive runs saved.
So, yeah.
that also helped the Mariners go two and seven after their opening series against the Guardian.
So they were behind the eight ball pretty early on, thanks in part to one Mr. Joe Adele.
And then lastly, coming into number one, for me at least, is going five and nine versus the A's and the Angels in September.
you could say it was the cherry on top
I'd say it was the most perfect representation
of the season as a whole
because somehow
by the grace of the baseball gods
you go into the month of September
still having a shot and you have 14 games
against two of the worst teams
in the entire sport
and you go three and seven
against them in the games that actually mattered
you get smoked by the A's
in the first three games of that stretch
and that was
ultimately the moment that brought finality to all of this.
And it was just like,
damn,
that's how you're going to go out,
huh? All right, well,
there you go. The top 15 moments that,
to me,
perfectly represented this awful
Mariners season. And again,
I probably missed some that you would have in your top 15
or maybe top 10,
maybe even top five. And I'm sure you're going to yell at me about those.
So have at it in the comments below.
Now, before we get out of here, you may notice that I am wearing a very interesting t-shirt today.
My Ahoi Sailor's T-shirt, which is going to be part of our merch drop coming out tomorrow.
We'll be unveiling that and opening up the shop on tomorrow's episode of Lockdown Mariners at the end.
So be sure to stick around for that.
I have this shirt right now.
I also have a couple others.
We got this one.
It just says,
Ahoy.
See that?
Got that right there.
We got a couple of different color variations of that one.
And I know this one,
it's going to be a favorite, especially for the OGs.
The I love Thanksgiving shirt.
That's me.
It's a turkey.
I made that.
I am not very artistically inclined,
and this took way longer to make than I would like to admit,
but I did it.
And there you go.
I will definitely be wearing this on Thanksgiving,
both Canadian,
which is coming up here soon,
Canadian Thanksgiving,
and American Thanksgiving next month.
And if you want to wear it on American Thanksgiving next month,
you will have the opportunity to,
and to get yourself one on starting tomorrow.
So be sure to tune in to tomorrow's episode.
We will quickly go down all the stuff that we will have available at launch.
And it will officially launch tomorrow.
Link will be in the description of tomorrow's episode.
So yeah, looking forward to that.
All right.
It's time to get out of here.
That's going to do it for our show.
