in reverse order of the divisional standings for the NL Central so that brings us to the
Pittsburgh Pirates to kick things off
What stands out to you on the Pirates roster, if anything?
Not a lot.
You know, a guy who has been a pretty consistent part of our discussions here
and in conversations like this over the last few years.
Still around Brian Reynolds.
Remember all the hype we had about Brian Reynolds, you know, for.
Fanfiction Friday legend.
Hall of family.
That's right.
Brian Reynolds.
And he still can hit.
I mean, 275.
344, 447, 24 homers, just 10 stolen bases, 8% walk rate, 22, like, it's all pretty good.
One of the worst outfield defenders in baseball, like worse than Randy Rosaena.
And that's really weird because just a couple of years ago, he was like a legitimate center fielder.
And they've even moved him to left field and he's gotten worse and worse and worse every year.
He's 29.
He still owed $87.5 million.
His contract runs through the 2031 season.
It's a lot of money to put up for a guy who, or at least seemingly is declining
athletically, still can hit, but he's 29 years old.
So, you know, you do have to worry about the cliff.
And obviously, it's not an egregious contract by any stretch.
When you look at what the Mariners already have in house, Reynolds, does he really fit?
Not really.
I mean, I want some Victor Robles insurance as much as the next guy.
but $87 million worth.
Seems a bit too rich for me.
There's some like, I mean,
there's tertiary player like Connor Joe,
who I know you like a little bit,
but he really slowed down in the second half.
He's going to make about three or four million bucks in ARB this year.
He's always good for a couple months of production.
He's one of those guys.
Sure.
Another guy who I think will probably be popular amongst Mariner fans
that I'm just not interested in it at all.
Brian Hayes,
Um, his contract runs through 2031.
He saw us $49 million, uh, left for that.
And this year he put up a 59 WRC plus.
And he wasn't, you know, super spectacular defensively either.
This isn't a guy who's making up for that, that, you know, I mean, I don't think
anybody can make up for a 59 WRC plus regardless of their defensive production.
But he certainly didn't do that this year.
So offensively, you know, not really a ton like you want to spend significant resources to go
get a backup catcher and Joey,
Bart. No. So yeah, Brian Reynolds, maybe you put that on the back burner. Pitching wise,
there's a couple dudes. David Bednar is the name that's going to steal a lot of, a lot of
attention here. But dude wasn't all that great this year. According to fan graphs, he was
objectively bad, which, yeah, 428 FIP in a 577 ERA. Yeah, not great. WAC really got away from him,
he's going to make quite a bit of money in ARB,
so I don't think the managers are going to be super interested in him.
They might be interested in Dennis Santana,
who is having,
or who he's having had a very,
very good year this year.
You look at what he did.
44 innings, a 10.15K for 9, a 2.23 based on ball for 9.
ratios Jerry and Justin are absolutely going to love.
You know, it's a really, really good profile here,
244 ERA 244 XERA worth 1.1F4.
So Santana is a guy who's pretty interesting pitch for Texas for a while,
so they're pretty familiar with him.
Dennis Santana is actually kind of maybe the guy from this team that I would be most
interested in, as weird as that is to say.
Yeah, Colin Holderman as well.
He finished 93rd percentile on breaking run value.
So that's another guy to keep.
keep an eye on his sweeper this year induced just a 165 batting average against an
39.3% whiff rate.
Yeah, a couple of bullpen arms.
Yeah.
But that's pretty much it, which was kind of the story with the last episode, unfortunately.
It's mostly bullpen guys.
Cincinnati, I know you like Jake Fraley here, potentially as a fourth outfield,
Victor Robles insurance option?
I say go big and just go get Ellie de la Cruz.
Sure.
I think that's doable.
Simple, simple, simple.
Sure.
But no, I mean, like Jonathan India is a guy who could make sense as, you know,
mid as that is, whatever, could make sense there.
Jake Fraley, I like as part of the Victor Robles insurance plan.
Guy who hits righty is pretty well, can do kind of a little bit of
everything he's got more pop in the bat than he showed this year but steel 20 bags doesn't
strike out draws walks blah blah blah blah uh t j friedel is kind of an interesting guy here who played
most of this year hurt uh but again when you look at what the mariners where the marries are at
with their outfield any outfield addition is going to be a tough fit it's not as as
cut and dry as it was even a couple months ago that they need outfielders so uh yeah i think
India, I think
Fraley, steer,
maybe, again, terrible defender
doesn't really have a spot.
Noel V Marte, potentially,
coming back.
But again, how do you get
Noel V Marte?
We don't know exactly what the Reds
plans are this winter,
but they do have some infield depth.
They're going to get Matt McLean back.
They're going to, they have
Cam Collier down on the farm.
So I think India's probably getting traded.
He's probably the guy that makes the most sense here.
On the pitching side,
of things.
I'm pretty interested in Fernando Cruz.
He's getting out of Great American Ballpark and pitching in a little more forgiving
environment like T-Mobile Park.
Does that help with the home runs?
Maybe a little.
He's pre-R,
but he is in his late 30s,
mid to late 30s,
just late-start guy.
So Cruz's pretty interesting.
If you're looking for that kind of back-and-bulping guy,
also I'll throw out Alexis Diaz,
Edwin's brother,
as a guy who,
you know,
elite extension, the 100th percentile extension.
He's right there with Logan Gilbert, pretty good slatter.
Good stuff.
Had a step back year this year, though.
So there's some stuff there that the Mariners would need to figure out.
But yeah, Alexis Diaz, I think would be a nice add to the back end of your bullpen.
Just, you know, guys who take the pressure off of Andres Munoz a little bit.
And, you know, you hope Gregory Santos is a part of that this upcoming year.
And Yope Brash eventually gets back this upcoming year.
And they can also help take.
But you still need somebody to do it who's done.
done it before. So Diaz is a guy I like. Cruz is a guy I like. So the Reds actually have quite a few guys
who make a good deal since for Seattle. I don't know if they have any like true impact players
that Seattle would like. They just don't have that guy at third base or whatever. But yeah,
I think the Reds actually do have quite a few potential answers, let's call it, to some of the
Mariners less talked about needs. If that makes sense. Okay. So we have. We have.
have three more teams left here in the NL Central to go over.
The Cubs, the Cardinals, and the Brewers.
We'll be going over a couple of those here in just a moment.
But first, a reminder, this episode of the Lockdown Marries podcast is brought to you by Fandul.
NFL fans can start the season with a big return on Fandul, America's number one sportsbook.
So when you get a hunch in the middle of the game, you can check out the latest stats of you live play

Yeah, you heard that right.
$200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet.
That's fandul.com.
And you're listening to the Locked-on Marys podcast.
We are continuing our division-by-division trade preview series for the 2025 off season.
Looking for potential trade targets for the Marys on every single team in the league.
Today we are doing the NL Central.
we just talked about the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
And now let's talk about the St. Louis Cardinals who have been connected to the Mariners and trade rumors a lot over the last year, year and a half.
And nothing has come of it.
But I assume once again, this offseason, these two teams are going to be connected a lot with one another.
Let's just get this out of the way because I've seen this a lot, potentially,
Louis Castillo trade here where the mayor is bringing back Nolan Aeronado thoughts I'm out
no yeah I'm out hard pass Aeronado is a declining player who only hit 16 home runs this
year slugged under 400 uh still very good defender but their Aeronado's contract is
ridiculously like complex there's a lot of deferred money and who pays the deferred money who you know
blah, blah, blah, not to mention just off the top, you have him through the 2028 season and he's going to cost you $74 million for a declining player.
No, no.
I just not interest in that really at all.
Assuming that he is the player he was this year next year, which hasn't been the case for the last couple of years,
Aronado and Castillo are essentially a wash in terms of value.
But Aronado is going to cost me more money in the long run than Castillo is.
I don't know that he actually, he's a 102 WRC plus guy this year.
And again, it sure looks to me that he has entered the decline stage of his career.
So I just don't want to be on the hook for that money.
And I think Castillo is just a better bet, quite frankly, than Aeronado.
So no, I'm not interested in that either.
Yeah, no.
Plus, he's going to be 34 years old for most of the year.
He's only going to be 33 for like the first three weeks of the season.
So, yeah.
Yeah.
It's just, it seems like a pretty safe bet that this is just the cliff.
He's finally started to reach it.
He's still good enough to be a league average bat with, you know, pretty good defense.
But that's, that's it.
And that's not worth what he's getting paid right now.
Still a starting player, but again, he's still owed $74 million over the next four years.
That's before you take into account the deferred money, which is a lot.
So I'm going to list a bunch of other names here.
And you just tell me who you want to talk about, uh, Alec Berlison, Brendan,
Donovan, Lars Neupar, Nolan Gorman.
Any of those guys stand up?
Yes.
Yes to all of them.
Jordan Walker.
Sure.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I mean, yes to all of them.
But again, how do I get these guys?
Right.
We talked about Donovan on Fan Fiction Friday last week.
We had a deal proposed to us for Donovan and Jojo Romero,
It's one of their relievers, lefty relievers.
Yeah.
But yeah, I just don't really know what Donovan's going to cost you.
He's our one.
So you get him for three years.
But that also, now it sounds like the Cardinals are also going to be shaving some money off the payroll.
You listen like they're not going to bring back Goldschmidt.
Sounds like they really are motivated to trade Sunny Gray.
They have some big contracts on their books that are not going to be easy for them to
to, you know, trade, but also like this is a team that's always acted like a mid-market team.
They are.
And they still spend a good amount of money that I don't think you would call them cheap.
This is not a team that's going to run, you know, $230 million payroll.
So just not going to do that.
So, yeah, I think they're going to be looking to sell off some contracts here.
But a guy like Brennan Donovan, a guy like Lars Neupar, they're going to make three million bucks this year each.
Like, those aren't the guys you really want to sell.
I mean, at least not right now and probably not for prospects.
So that's the hard part, right?
If you're the Mariners, like, you want to trade away prospects to get major leaguers
because trade away major leaguers for major leaguers,
you're probably not going to get much better as a result of that.
Your major league roster.
Occasionally it works, Luke Reilly for Jose Caviero, and everybody's happy.
And you get a little bit better because of it.
But most of the time you trade major leaguer for major leaguer,
you're kind of taking a lateral move here.
And I don't know, Donovan.
and I don't know if Donovan and Lars Newbar specifically are going to be available for, you know,
I don't think the Cardinals are stupid enough to be like, give us Bryce Miller for one of these two guys.
I think they'd be like, hey, give us Bryce Miller and we'll give you Donovan and, you know, whatever,
somebody in their farm system that they kind of like.
But I'm not trade.
There's nobody on this team on this roster that I'm trading one of my pitchers for.
So there's probably not a realistic package that they could put together.
That would make me interested in trading one of my four younger starters.
I don't think there are Louis Castillo fit because, again, they're trying to like trade away like Sunny Gray's contract.
That is not a team that's going to take on a $24 million starting pitcher.
They're trying to get rid of their own $24 million starting pitcher.
So yeah, I mean, Gorman is pre-arb.
I went to war with people last winter about Gorman.
there were a lot of Mariner fans who wanted to trade Miller Wu for Gorman last winter.
Yeah, 38% shrinkout, right?
Yeah, yeah, Gorman had an awful year this year.
He ends up getting sent down.
He slashed 203, 271, 400.
It's an 87 WRC plus.
Like you mentioned, a 37.6% K rate over 107 games play.
That's 402 played appearances.
That is awful.
It's also not a glove.
like it's not like you can make up for it with defense uh yeah like i'm still interested in the guy like
gorman but not for one of my arms not for one of those arms so yeah like i would take the shot on
him right if i'm getting a serious deal on him that's the shot you take on like the shot you're
talking about is like logan evans and brandon or uh i almost said brandon williamson ben williamson
uh like that's the shot you take and even then you're probably a little bit like i guess we'll see
uh like burleson as much as like he's had a pretty nice year again terrible defender at the end of
the day a 106 w rc plus that for yeah that should be playing for space yeah like or d h so right
new bar again we've talked about new bar doesn't really hit lefties pretty good like he's a good
player large newpar is a good player he's not a superstar he's not an all star he's not a guy that
you give away top five prospects for and neither is donovan so i i think the cardinals have a lot of guys
that make sense for Seattle.
I'm a little unsure of what the Cardinals are going to want.
Are they going to be open to trading some of their major leaguers for prospects?
If they are, the Cardinals are one of the better trade fits for the Mariners this winter.
If they're not, they're basically not a fit.
One other name I'll throw out there.
I know we were talking about bats, but Ryan Helsley, again, you want to spend a little bit.
You want to go get that guy, that co-anchor in the back of your bullpen with Andreas Munoz,
go trade for Ryan Helsley.
really good.
But, you know, aside from those guys,
probably, that's probably about it.
I think it's those handful of bats that we talked about.
Ryan Halsley, as much as I like Sunny Gray,
it would be stupid for the Mariners to acquire him,
unless, of course, they're trading Luis Castillo or something like that.
But again, he's making so much money that.
Yeah, no, it doesn't work.
Right.
Again, as much as I like Sunny Gray.
Same goes for Miles Mikolas.
But yeah, I think Ryan Halsley is the guy here.
If you're looking to the car,
and maybe it's something like,
like I would try,
they're looking to save money, right?
If that's a big motivator for them,
I would trade them four years of Gregory Santos
for one year of Ryan Halsley.
Like, that's something I would do.
Like, I would trade them Logan Evans
for one year of Ryan Halsley.
So, you know,
Hellsley's probably the guy I'm most interested in on this team.
But yeah, obviously the Burlesons, the Walker's, the admin or Tommy, not on the team anymore.
The, uh, the, the, Brennan Donovans.
Uh, those are the guys.
They all kind of look, they all kind of feel like the same guy.
Uh, those are the guys that like, yeah, at the right price.
Joe randoms.
Pretty much.
At the right price.
Yeah, I'm interested in all those guys.
Who's the guy I'm willing to pay like, one guy off this Cardinals roster?
I'm probably picking Ryan.
healthily.
All right.
So we got the Cubs and the Brewers still to go over in just a moment.
But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown America's podcast is once again
brought to you by game time.
So I used to live in New Mexico and down in New Mexico, there are zero pro sports teams.
And a lot of bands and artists I listen to skip going there more often than not.
So when I moved to Toronto, where there's a baseball team, a basketball team, a hockey team,
even a soccer team and there's great music being played every night in the city, I was right
in my element.
When I want to catch a ball game or my wife and I want to see a ban, I always get my tickets through game time.
And that was the case well before game time sponsored our network and before I even join the network.
Because it is truly the best ticketing service out there hands down.
I truly, truly believe that.
And now it's getting even better thanks to game time picks.
Game time picks filters out the fluff to show you only incredible deals on great seats so you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
I can just go on the app.
It'll show me the best deal right away.
It'll show me the exact view I'll have.
And most importantly, it'll tell me exactly what I'm going to pay with game times all in pricing.
So there are no annoying little fees that pop up at the last second.
Take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time.
Download the game time app, create an account, and use the promo code locked on MLB.
That's LOC, KD, O NMLB for $20 off your first purchase.

What time is it?
Game Time.
And you're listening to the Lockdown Marrars podcast.
We are combing through the NL Central for potential trade targets for the
Marys this winter.
We have done the Pirates, Reds, and Cardinals.
Cardinals pretty extensive discussion.
I think we're going to have another one here.
Maybe not as much, but there's quite a few options here when it comes to the Chicago
Cubs.
We've obviously talked a lot about Nico Horner on.
the show. I want to start here, though. They traded for him at the deadline. Would they think
at all about moving on from ESOC Paredes already? Yes. Okay. The problem is I think they want
pitching. Right. So it's the same discussion as we had about Paredes. Pretty much. He was on the
race. Just one year less of club control, not as productive, not coming off of as productive of a season.
so probably less valuable he was bad with the cubs yeah and it's particularly in the second half
but yeah bad with the cubs uh in particular so yeah interesting uh guy there uh paredes like i think
the mariners would still be interested uh obviously they they need third base help but yeah the fact
that he's got a year less of club control the fact that he's coming off of a really really bad finish
uh to the season yeah i mean i think
that he'll be made available.
My gut feel, though, is that they're going to look at this and they're going to be like,
give us Brian Wu for ESOC parade is.
And you're just going to be like, no, I wouldn't do it last winter.
I'm certainly not doing it this winter when he has less club control and is coming off of a bad year,
or a bad second half at least.
So, yeah.
Yeah, again, like a lot of these guys who talk about, should the mayors be interested?
Sure.
Is it likely they can get a deal done for this specific player?
No, probably not.
but yeah parade is absolutely should be in the discussion
so you guys already know how we feel about Nico Horner
I don't think we really need to go over that again
it's a good player yeah totally good player it's mostly defense
up the middle defense and base running mostly
but he's he's gonna get on base he's gonna hit for average
yep just a good solid player yep
um anyone else positionally speaking
sure
obviously kind of the big question mark here is Cody Bellinger.
Does he opt in or opt out?
It's one of the more up in the air opt out or option questions out there.
And he was pretty good this year, not great.
You know, he played in 130 games, so he did miss some time.
266, 325, 426, 109 WRC Plus.
You trade for him, you own $52 million over the next few years.
but he still is young in his prime.
So I do think that he would make some sense for the Mariners.
Again, money being the issue there, $26 million is a big chunk.
That's more or less what we have predicted they have to spend a total this winter.
Are you just going to blow it all on Cody Bellinger?
Probably not.
But Bellinger makes some sense.
Other guys that make sense.
Ian Hap and Say a Suzuki.
They certainly make sense.
And they make sense in a Luis Castillo for one of those two guys type of sense.
Because the Cubs would take on a little bit of money, but the Cubs need starting pitching.
That is the missing element right now.
And if Bellinger opts in, they have the outfield pretty much in place.
They have Hap.
They have Suzuki.
They have Crow Armstrong.
They have Bellinger.
They have Tockman.
Like, they can afford to trade one of those outfills.
fielders.
So obviously, I think you would prefer saying a Suzuki, just a little bit more upside there,
but half is probably the guy most likely to be moved.
Again, because of their, I don't want to say bloated, but because of their appropriately
high salaries that they've earned, it makes it a little difficult for the Mariners to
acquire either one unless they're swapping out a salary with that contract.
So, yeah, I think the outfield half, Suzuki, Bellinger, or all.
all interesting. I don't think you could get Michael Bush without trading one of the
Wu or Miller, but if you could, that'd be great. I think he's actually a pretty nice fit.
Strikeout rate's pretty high, but the power should play at Team level park.
And, you know, again, a super, super dark horse here. I think there's a shot. Dan Svyswanson
has moved this winter. I just don't know that he makes much sense for Seattle with all the money
that he's still owed. But yeah, there's actually quite a few bats here. Hap, Suzuki, Horner, Bush,
Wellinger, parade is.
Like, there's quite a few bats.
That makes some sense for Seattle.
It's not a ton here on the pitching side of things.
Again, the Cubs' weakness is pitching.
They need pitching.
I will say, like, it's kind of like a, I don't know, kind of like a guy like the Mariners might
look at and be like, we can fix him.
Like, we can get more out of it.
Hayden West Nesky.
Oh, yeah.
It's pretty interesting.
Some good peripherals there, 67 innings.
He's got starting experience.
Kind of went back and forth this year for the.
Cubs.
But 8.9, K per 9, 2.8 based on ball per 9, 393 FIP, like, or XIP, like 3-86,
ERA, like there's something there.
There's a little something there.
But, you know, it's aside from that, like, there's just not a ton out of this bullpen.
And obviously, unless the Mariners are trading one of their starting pitchers, looking at
other teams rotations really doesn't make much sense.
So because mostly because everybody in that everybody in said teams rotation is probably
worse than your five guys.
If you can get Imanaga or you can get Justin Steele, fine, do it.
But you can't.
So let's not waste our time there.
But the Cubs do have some bets.
That absolutely makes sense for Seattle.
So lastly, the Milwaukee Brewers were coming off of another division title, surprising division
title for the Brewers
after trading Corbyn Burns in the off season
seemed like they were heading in a different direction
but they were actually really good this year
a lot of fun to watch.
Not a lot here that I see honestly.
We talked about Reese Hoskins on
fan fiction Friday last week.
Maybe there's an opportunity
for like a contract swap there with Hanager
and a prospect that they like.
That makes it worth giving up
Hoskins to take on Hanager's money.
Blum. Right, but that's basically the only
situation that works.
You're not trading for Reese Hoskins at $18 million
and just adding that payroll.
No.
So pretty much it has to be a Hanager swapper.
I mean, I guess a Garber swap maybe.
Yeah.
But, yeah.
Short of that now, Hoskins isn't an option.
Not a lot here, frankly.
Aaron Savale is someone that I've looked at
a potential
supplementary piece
if you traded
Castillo
just a solid
number four
number five type
who you'll get for a year
and isn't going to cost a lot
in terms of money
so you're not reinvesting
a whole lot of the money
that you would theoretically save
in a Castillo deal
back into starting pitching.
Yeah
this is another
like bullpen team
to me.
Like I really like
Trevor McGill
I don't know how you would get Trevor McGill.
I really like Trevor McGill.
Arvonne this year.
Yeah.
Devin Williams.
Again, don't really know how you would get Devin Williams, but obviously I love Devin
Williams.
It is a big chunk of money to Devin Williams, though, of your budget this winter.
Yeah.
So not a no-brainer.
But, yeah, you would also be fun.
Yeah.
I mean, pretty much anyone in this bullpen, I have at least some level of interest in.
Bobby Milner, Jared Koenig, Joel Pyeumps, Brian Hudson, all these guys are really
even Bryce Wilson, who can also start a little bit.
Yeah, anyone else we should talk about from this roster?
I'll just mention him because somebody, we get, we get like fan fiction Fridays about this guy
pretty regularly.
I don't think Christian Yelich makes much sense.
you still do $124-ish million.
He got hurt yet again this year.
Not really much of a defender.
Can he still hit?
Sure.
It seems like he can hit.
Can he do it over the course of 162?
I don't really know.
There's a lot of questions about the money and how, you know, again, it's very similar
to Bellinger.
It's like, are you willing to spend all of your money on one guy?
And is that guy, Christian Yellich?
I don't know for sure.
I only played 73 games this year.
And remember before 2023, he had a couple years in a row there where he wasn't slugging like at all.
Like there was, he was just hitting for some average and hitting some doubles,
but he wasn't hitting for any power whatsoever.
And then in 2023, he slugged 447.
This last year he slugged 504.
Hasn't hit over 20 home run since 2019.
Did get 19 last year.
Still steal some bags.
but he's a poor defender.
I just think overall the package that you get for Yelich,
who is also, by the way,
he'll be 33 years old in about six weeks.
Too big of a risk, too much money.
And it's exactly the type of guy that John Stanton has already said.
We don't are going to spend money on those types of guys.
So just to put that out there, like Yelich in a vacuum,
would you make the Mariners better?
Sure.
We don't operate in a vacuum.
We have to take into account all factors.
And I don't like Yelich.
which is getting traded, quite frankly.
But even if he is, it's not going to be to Seattle.
I don't see that unless there is some insane deal to be had where the brewers are eating a ton of money.
And that doesn't really sound like something the brewers do now is it.
So, yeah, this is a bullpen team for me.
And then maybe Savale, maybe it might be a prospect or two that could happen here.
Yeah, or a French 26-man guy like Blake Perkins.
Right.
Oliver done.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So, yeah, like, Freilich and all those guys, they don't make sense.
So cross off anybody like that.
So, yeah, this is a bullpen team almost exclusively for Seattle.
That being said, the bullpen is very important.
And these guys have extra arms.
So don't be shocked with these two teams hook up on a deal.
Could totally see it.
For sure.
All right.
So that is going to do it for our show.
We will be doing the NL West tomorrow.
so no fan fiction Friday this week.
