Starting point is 00:00:00 Once again for the second straight game, a lot went sideways for the Mariners in Baltimore, but they were still able to impressively overcome it all. Let's talk about it. Colby, hit it. You are locked on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast, part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. Ahoy, sailors, it is Wednesday, June 10th, 2026. My name is Tadding Azales, and I'm joined as always by my co-covee Colby Patnode. On today's show, we have a leftover mailbag question from someone in our discord that we want to get to about who we value more Dominic Canzone or Luke Rayleigh will also talk about Logan Gilbert start last night and how we might tie into future piggyback plans after this road trip is over but let's start with
Starting point is 00:00:49 well everything else that happened and last night six to five extra innings win over the Orioles because just like on yesterday's episode there's a lot to get to here a lot went sideways for this Mariners ball club this felt like a game that they were destined to to lose towards the end there really. So I was trying to go over all of it and try to recap everything from specifically the last couple
Starting point is 00:01:15 of endings here. Just to peel back the curtain a little bit. This is my third time attempting to do this because Streamyard sucks. Anyway, so the Barons have a 4 to 2 lead, right? In the ninth inning, Jose Pereer comes into this game. He's been amazing this year.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Unfortunately, things finally caught up to him. He gives up a home run to Kobe Mayo. Then the Orioles get a weak end field single. That gets followed up by a ground rule double from Tyler O'Neill. Then Samuel Boussayo hits an infield grounder and Ferrer picks it up and chooses not to take the out and tries to go home with it. And they don't get it out there.
Starting point is 00:02:01 Then he walks Taylor Ward and the Orioles now have the bases loaded. with the winning run on third and only one out. But then the marons get the force out at home against Gunner Henderson. So that now makes two outs. However, P. Alonzo is now stepping into the batters box. And that's the last guy that you want to see in that situation. And that at bat goes to a full count. So now Ferreira is only one ball away from losing this game.
Starting point is 00:02:31 But he induces a grounder to Ryan Bliss. And Bliss, barely beats Gunner Henderson to the bag. I mean, barely for the third out and to force extra. So not only were the mayor is one ball away from losing this game, they were maybe like half a step from losing this game as well. And then in the top of the 10th, Randy or Rosarena hits a pitch that, what did you say, Colby?
Starting point is 00:02:56 It was a foot and a half off of the center of the plate. The center of the plate, yeah. So what is that? Like six inches off of the plate in general. Oh, yeah. He somehow hits that pitch out of the ballpark for a two-run home run. But even then, even with the two-run lead, the Barons are far from out of the woods because, yeah, they don't have Andre Samunios. They don't have Matt Brash.
Starting point is 00:03:18 They don't have Edward Bizarro. So who does that leave? Nick DeVila, who had just been called up maybe an hour before first pitch with Cooper Criswell going on the aisle. Yeah, so DeVila is now on the mound trying to get his first career save. and he immediately finds himself in trouble, immediately hits Blaze Alexander, and then a run scores eventually, and the Orioles now have first and third with no one out,
Starting point is 00:03:47 and the mirrors are only up by one. And it just kind of seems like the writing is on the wall here, right? But then there's an awkward pop-up. Josh Naylor doesn't have a good read on it, but Ryan Bliss, who isn't even supposed to be in the last, lineup. He's only in the lineup because Cole Emerson is dealing with a back thing. And he was only recently added to the roster just a couple of days ago because J.P.
Starting point is 00:04:14 Crawford's on the I.L. with his hand contusion. He makes an incredible diving grab for the first out. Patrick Wisdom then barely cuts down Blaze Alexander at home for the second out. And then DeVila strikes out Tyler O'Neill to secure the save and the Mariners I really don't know how they did it even though I just listed how they did it really I still can't believe what I actually saw last night over those final two innings
Starting point is 00:04:45 but the Mariners somehow some way win that game crazy it was indeed um defense stop it am I right Perry Hill because for the first time Maybe the only time all year, the Mariners won this game because of their defense.
Starting point is 00:05:08 And that's not to say it was perfect because it was certainly not. Cole Young had an error in this game. Alex Hoppe made a mental mistake of not letting the ball roll foul or even attempt to roll foul. You know, Ferrer almost threw the game away when he should have just taken and out and settled for a tie and all that. When that happened, I thought it was over. Yeah. Oh, yeah. So, I mean, yeah, it really was.
Starting point is 00:05:33 again, not a perfect defensive game, but they made enough plays, and they made non-routine plays, you know, and they did make routine plays as well, but they made some non-routine plays. You know, it kind of gets lost in all of this, but Julio had an exceptional game defensively. Made a couple really good sketches, including a big one
Starting point is 00:05:51 with the bases loaded in the first to limit the damage just one run. Seems like someone heard that Aaron Judge was going to miss some time and that AL MVP might be up for grabs. He dug himself a pretty big hole. war-wise. But yeah, no, he made three really good catches, and obviously he had the big throw last night.
Starting point is 00:06:10 And we've talked about Julio looking a little better out there. Well, there you go. Not quite as graceful as we remember, but getting to the balls and catching them. And that's the important thing. You know, Cole Young had a diving play to record an out earlier in the game. Mitch Garver, a couple of really good tags, which is not something the Mariners, catchers,
Starting point is 00:06:29 are traditionally good at, tagging guys out. And he had to be really good with it. And so, yeah, the Mariners just made plays. And again, they made mistakes. We just kind of have to accept that that's who they are. They can clean some of the stuff up, sure. But, yeah, this is not a crisp baseball team, right? This isn't a team that's just going to typically give you 27 outs.
Starting point is 00:06:52 And they're only going to give you 27. And then they're going to be so pristine. They're going to make you earn all 27 of your outs. No, they're probably going to hand you one or two a game, which is going to be annoying. and could ultimately be the thing that stops them from winning the World Series. These little things we talk about all the time, nickels and dimes. But last night they stepped up when they absolutely had to. They made the plays they needed to make.
Starting point is 00:07:14 And, you know, it's a big part of the reason why they've won these two games, but especially last night, they've, as odd as it is to say, they've just played a little bit cleaner baseball than the Orioles over the last two games, despite everything we just talked about. And that's why they've won the first two games and have a good chance to win at the four games set on the road, which is obviously really hard to do. And Baltimore, they're not a great team, but they can really swing it. And they're a dangerous team.
Starting point is 00:07:42 And the fact that you've been able to win these two games without, you know, the best version of your starting pitchers starting these two games without your bullpen, firing in all cylinders is really impressive. I mean, three of your four highest leverage arms have really struggled in this series. And you still found a way to. to win the games by making a few plays that Baltimore didn't make. And by taking advantage of one or two mental mistakes that Baltimore made, you were able to win both of these games.
Starting point is 00:08:12 So last night, defense stepped up huge. You know, it was really nice to see the defense and the offense pick up, you know, a guy in Ferrer who's been so good this year and just, honestly, all-star caliber all year. And then he just had a hiccup last night. And you could just, I mean, the guys've got to be running. in on fumes right now. We talked about how the Mariners have used and abused and overused him so far this year.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Like that dude has earned the rest of the series off. It didn't go well for him last night, but I still have all the confidence in the world that he'll be back at it. And then, you know, huge ups to Nick DeVila for stepping up and not letting the moment get too big for him after it kind of seemed like the moment got too big for him after he flunk plays Alexander on the first pitch. But yeah, I mean, I don't know. There's kind of a weird thing happening. And it's kind of a weird thing happening in Baltimore where the Mariners seem to have a tough time gripping the baseball, like the pitchers. A lot of bad, bad misses from just about everybody. Like Ferrer couldn't find the change up at all.
Starting point is 00:09:16 Gilbert couldn't find the splitter at all. Brash couldn't really find the fastball really at all. Like it's just kind of a weird, I don't know if it's humidity. I don't know if it's just fatigue. But yeah, the Mariners pitching hasn't had their pinpoint command and control, but they've kind of grinded through. They've gritted through and the offense has done enough the last two nights. The defense has done enough the last two nights.
Starting point is 00:09:37 And ultimately the pitching has done enough the last two nights to secure at least a series split against a powerful hitting Baltimore team. And you have the pitching advantage at least tonight. And then obviously see what happens against Braddish on Thursday. But at the very least you secured a split and you can go into this weekend. And if you take two of three from Washington, not an easy thing to do. They're playing good ball right now. But if you can do that, then you come back home on a 10 game and 10 day road trip and you go five and five, huge. That would be very, very good, especially considering the fragile state of your bullpen right now.
Starting point is 00:10:12 And also considering how poorly these Eastern Time Zone trips have gone for the Mariners over the last couple of years as well. I think if you were able to split this road trip or even come out with a winning road trip, you know, like that would be passive really for the vibes. So yeah, I mean, this is kind of the beauty of baseball, right? And I said this in my short that I posted last night, like, you know, at times this year, it's felt like the Mariners have lost some games that they felt destined to win. And, you know, the last couple of days, it kind of feels like they've won some games that they were destined to lose. And so it just kind of feels like, you know, things are balancing out a little bit, right? So we'll see if they can get themselves a series win either tonight or tomorrow night.
Starting point is 00:10:59 It's not a getaway day. They're playing tomorrow night. And they're playing on ESPN, by the way. For those of those of you that don't know. Yep. Yeah. So, but yeah, you know, shout out to Nick DeVila. And he even admitted after the, after the game that, yeah, his mind was going a million miles per minute when he was coming out there.
Starting point is 00:11:15 And, uh, but, you know, he's had some big moments, you know, and his limited, a limited amount of opportunities here. You know, just eight inning so far with the big league club. But, yeah, going back to, you know, when they were down all those arms in Houston, like, he had a couple of big innings in that Houston series. And now last night, you know, really digs deep. I just, I thought, you know, the ability to strike out O'Neill there after getting the two big outs. Because obviously you get the two big outs and it feels like, oh, man, we're about to. Yeah, we're about to get out of it.
Starting point is 00:11:44 But, you know, sometimes that's, that's when they can get you still, right? And then I think you jumped ahead, oh, two. And like, you kind of, you get the sense of, in the feeling like, okay, this one's in the bag. Now we got this. And then you pipe one. And then all of a sudden. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:11:57 And by the way, keep in mind, you know, the Mariners also got a little bit of fortunate luck that Tyler O'Neill's had a ground rule double that prevented a run from scoring. And that very well could have been the difference of this ballgame. So the Mariners catching some breaks. We know a couple of replay challenges have gone their way. But they're taking advantage of those. And they're winning on the margins, which is exactly what you need to have happen, especially when in reality the Mariners are playing essentially with one hand tied behind their back right now. there's no J.P. Crawford. Colt Emerson hasn't been able to play in the series. You still don't have Cal back. You don't have Donovan back. Your bullpins, you know, a mash unit right now as you're,
Starting point is 00:12:37 you're kind of trying to, you know, figure out who's available on a day-to-day basis. You don't have an off-day coming for another five days still. So there's still a lot of handholding and a lot of management going on there. And they found a way to go into Baltimore again and win a couple of games. Again, Baltimore's not a great team, but they're not a bad team either. Like these are, these are tough wins. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:00 the Marines have kind of had to grit their way through it. And, you know, big shout out to obviously a guy like DeVila, but, you know, Patrick Wisdom has come up and, and he's contributed,
Starting point is 00:13:09 you know, and Connor Joe earlier this year came up and he contributed. And obviously, Parada is definitely doing more than contributing. And Mitch Garver stepped up, like those two guys have stepped up with Cal out. And, you know,
Starting point is 00:13:21 the Mariners are getting like real, tangible contributions from their I mean as the Seahawks call it their ready squad right just like the next man up and they're getting big contributions from these guys because while the Mariners haven't had the major injury just yet and maybe they don't hopefully they don't they have missed quite a few games from you know
Starting point is 00:13:42 some of their best players and Donovan and JP and Cal and Spire and Brash like these guys have all been on the IL and you know the Mariners have found a way to kind of keep their head above water thanks in large part to the depth of the AAA farm. And those guys just finding a way to contribute. It's not overwhelming contributions, except for maybe Parada, but just finding a way to chip in on the score sheet every single night.
Starting point is 00:14:07 That's what good teams do. It was a big part of the story last year for this club as well with guys like Leo Rivas and Rowdy Telez early on in the season. And even when they got that June from Donovan Solano, where you started to kind of turn things around there for a couple weeks, you know, you need stuff like that to happen. If you are going to be a team that gets to October and eventually makes it run in October, you need things like that to go your way because you are going to sustain injuries. You are going to have guys that don't perform up to expectations
Starting point is 00:14:40 and what have you. And so some guys need to step up. And yeah, like you mentioned, you know, there's been multiple guys that have done that. And even if Patrick Wisdom isn't doing a ton offensively right now, he's made some big defensive plays. He is, you know, hit a big home round that has helped you win a game. Like he has done some things to, to help. Ryan Bliss has done some things to help you win a couple of ball games here. You know, I had the sack fly on Monday as well.
Starting point is 00:15:06 You know, that's not a good guy. Yeah. And that's not a guy that I, you know, I think we really expected to see much of for the rest of the season as well, you know. So, yeah, that's, again, those are the things that you need to have happened here. And it's, it's nice to see that those things are going in the mayor's direction. Yep.
Starting point is 00:15:25 Got to find a way to contribute. And the mayors have gotten contributions from one through 40. All right. Well, coming up, we are going to talk about Logan Gilbert. It was a tale of two Logans last night. We'll also talk about what they could potentially do with them
Starting point is 00:15:41 if they decide to go back to the piggyback after this road trip ends. And just a moment. So again, with Munoz, Brasch, and Bizarro, all unavailable yesterday, the Mariners really needed. a lengthy start out of Logan Gilbert and it didn't seem like we were going to get one. He needed 58 pitches to get through the first two innings
Starting point is 00:17:35 of this game. But credit where credit is due, he really locked in for those final four innings, went to 105 pitches to give the Mariners six much needed innings in total, allowing just one run on three hits,
Starting point is 00:17:51 striking out five, walking to seven hard hit balls, against Logan. What did you make of his day yesterday, Colley? I mean, the first two innings, it felt like the wheels were going to fall off. And even in the third inning, I didn't think he was all that good.
Starting point is 00:18:12 And then the last three innings, he really kind of dialed it in. I believe he retired the last 14 hitters that he faced. And the pitch count was super manageable. I mean, I thought he was going to be lucky to give you four at some point. And then he got five. And then I mean, obviously the big thing here is that he needed that sixth inning.
Starting point is 00:18:34 The Mariners needed it from him. And the fact that he was able to go out there and get it done and, you know, kind of grind through it. And again, we talked about this. Baltimore, not a particularly good team. But they can hit. This is a good lineup now. Basayo and Ruchman have largely been not used. I mean, Ruchman not at all.
Starting point is 00:18:50 And Bessio has been pinch hitting because he's got some wrist issues. So that obviously helps a little bit here. but this is still a very good lineup that can definitely do damage. And Logan very nearly lost this game for Seattle in the first inning, got bailed out thanks to Julio a little bit. And then he just kind of, you know, grinded it out and he pitched deep into the game. Six innings is good for Logan.
Starting point is 00:19:12 And the fact that, you know, he was at, what, 95 pitches after five. And he went back out there and he got three outs on 10 pitches, whatever it was. Like that, that was huge. And obviously, you know, with the game going into extras, as you don't know that at the time. But yeah, it's huge that he was able to kind of push through and find a way to go six. So, yeah, kind of an interesting night from Logan. We saw the big Velo early in this game, but that went away pretty quick.
Starting point is 00:19:39 In fact, in the sixth inning, Logan Gilbert didn't throw a single fastball in his last inning to work. He started at a good night at 98. He ended at 94 in the fifth. The Vilo was dropping pretty quick. again, I don't know if that's fatigue. I don't know if that's because it's hot and humid in Baltimore. He had, obviously, the first two innings were all high-stress pitches. So, like, yeah, I'm not overly concerned.
Starting point is 00:20:06 He did look uncomfortable in the mound a few times. But to be fair, Logan's resting facial expression is just kind of mild discomfort. So it's hard to tell sometimes. But, yeah, no, I thought Logan looked pretty good. Very slider-heavy from him, slider-forcing. We really didn't throw the split all that much. She didn't seem to have a good grip on it last night. So he just went to the slider and the split.
Starting point is 00:20:28 He had a 50% whiff rate on the slider last night. Only a 19% whiff rate on the fastball. The fastball is going to be the key for Logan. We could talk about him adding this pitch or that pitch or refining this or that. But Logan needs more fastball value. And right now he's trying to find it with Velo. I don't know if that's going to work or not. Didn't really work last night.
Starting point is 00:20:50 But I thought Logan overall was it was a bold. dog type of effort from him where he just kind of gritted and grinded through the first three innings until he could kind of find where he was where he needed to be stuff wise and then he was able to really cruise after the third inning and it's exactly what the Mariners needed so hat tip to Logan give him a stick tap for that effort but still a lot of work to be done there and he needs to find a way to be more efficient early in games but again a heck of an effort to grind it out give the Mariners 6 and and you know give them i mean if you pitch well enough to to win that game uh that's why pitcher wins are stupid because you know who won that game tie
Starting point is 00:21:29 Jose ferre won that game so yeah yeah it's uh stop stop telling me what a pitcher's record is most people don't do that which is nice but yeah i thought logan i think we've i think we've gotten away from that for the most part for the most part for the most part there's one or two standouts or it's just like come on dude uh but anyways yeah logan i thought really you know was what he needed to be in many ways and that's kind of a leader of this pitching staff and kind of a guy who uh you know when things get tough that's the guy you want to lean on and and last night logan was that guy for at least three anings yeah so again major props for what logan was able to do especially from the you know third or fourth inning non-ord um that said
Starting point is 00:22:19 That doesn't erase, you know, suddenly erase, you know, everything that we've seen over the last 40 plus starts from, from Logan. And so that brings us to a bigger conversation that I want to have about Logan. So we don't know exactly what the mayor's plan is going to be with rotation once this road trip ends. We know that they're employing the six-man rotation for the duration of this road trip. After that, are they going to send someone to the bullpen, likely Luis Castillo, in that scenario or are they going to go back to a piggyback situation or are they just going to stick with the six-man rotation? We really don't know.
Starting point is 00:22:56 But if they do go back to the piggyback, I think they need to heavily consider making Logan Gilbert part of it because of the issues that we've seen again over the last 40 years. So starts for him being able to get deep into games. I think if anyone is a prime candidate or a piggyback role, if they have to do it, right, not necessarily advocating for the piggyback here, but if they have to do it, if they feel the need to do it, I think Gilbert is the perfect guy
Starting point is 00:23:26 to serve as one half of it. Yeah, we know he struggles to go five, you know, get through five usually takes them 90 pitches, give or take. And we also know that the numbers are what they are. And after pitch 75, 80, Logan's quality of a pitch drops off. So it does seem,
Starting point is 00:23:47 like the prime candidate. There is a little bit of a scheduling issue in that, like if you wanted to piggyback Logan on Tuesday, next Tuesday, I think would be his next start. You couldn't really do it because I think Castillo pitches Saturday. And so there's not really enough rest. So they're just not lined up properly. So it'd be a little tricky to do it. You'd have to push Luis and then like you probably have to go one more turn through. And then Luis, you'd have to find somebody else to piggyback with him. There's some complicated lining up, some alignment that needs to happen. Right. So I have a different idea. Okay. So Emerson Hancock, who's been great this year, I don't necessarily think needs to be involved in a piggyback, but his career high innings
Starting point is 00:24:34 between the majors and AAA is 155 back in 2024. Last year, he only threw 134 and two-thirds between the majors and triple A. And, you know, of course, some of that was because he was pitching out of the bullpen a little bit there towards the end of the season and all that. Did he's at what, 80? He's now at 75 and 2 thirds. At a certain point,
Starting point is 00:25:00 I'm not sure if this will become a part of the conversation, but there is the possibility that this does become part of the conversation around Hancock is managing his innings. And so, to some degree. And so Hancock right now, Hancock and Gilbert right now are lined up back to back. So you could, in theory, piggyback those guys for at least a little while in order to kind of not necessarily reset Hancock's endings, but normalize them a little bit to where the Mariners are more comfortable. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:36 I mean, again, I think both of our preferences would be that they just put somebody in the bullpen. And as well as these pitched recently, it's still unfortunately, makes some. most sense for that to be Castillo. Yeah. But it does also seem to me that the, the Mariners just aren't interested in doing that. And it seems to me that they're also not just, they're just not that interested in doing a six-man rotation long term. So I think the piggyback is going to come back around, assuming there are no injuries over the
Starting point is 00:26:06 next few days, of course. And at that point, though, is it time to move Castillo off of piggybacking from Miller? Like, I know that's worked really well, but Bryce, at least, you had the whole thing. thing like well he needs to still build up his his workload and all that well he's done it we know it works so yeah at some point do you do you just change the the opener essentially uh to to somebody else and again if it is about trying to keep guys as fresh as possible for september in october then yeah moving the piggyback partner around to different guys does make sense on paper again it's just about aligning it right on the schedule and making sure that you know both pitchers are
Starting point is 00:26:45 well rested on the same day and not taking them out of their routine in additional time to try and try to force this together. So yeah, I do think that it's a conversation that needs to be had. And I wouldn't be too terribly shocked if, you know, the Mariners piggyback every pitcher in the rotation at least once or twice for the rest of this year. But just based on like who are the candidates, who's the prime candidate to do it with, it's Logan Gilbert and then it's Emerson Hancock.
Starting point is 00:27:15 Brian Wu, you could also make the argument, though, too, because he's never finished a season healthy. So if you do it with Wu a couple times, too. But, yeah, I, you know, it's just one of those things where it's like, you know, I know this is going to make, or do we want to make another person unhappy with the piggyback? But the same time, like. Communication, communication, communication. Hopefully they learned their lesson from the last time.
Starting point is 00:27:40 My hunch is that they'll just ride with Bryce and Louise still doing it. But I do think that if they're going to continue to do the piggyback, they should utilize it by giving multiple different pitchers like half days off and at least a couple turns through the rotation. So I would move the target here from Bryce to Logan for a couple times through. And then maybe you move it from Logan to Emerson for a couple times through. And we'll see what happens. By then, by the time you move it, like Kirby could be on the IL for six weeks.
Starting point is 00:28:11 you know, and the problem solved, new problem, but problem solved, you know, so yeah, it is kind of a tricky situation. But I do think that, yeah, they need to be open to having that conversation. If, you know, if the piggyback, if that's what we're committed to, it shouldn't always be Bryce who has to carry the piggyback on his shoulder. So we'll see how it goes. But, yeah, I think Logan is a pretty obvious candidate for it. All right. Coming up, who do we value more right now? Dominicanzone or Luke Rayley. I'll answer that in just a moment. But first a reminder of this episode

Starting point is 00:31:21 Link in the description of this episode. So we have a leftover mailbag Monday question from our Discord. It comes from Klotzilovkus, and we actually want to get to it. Now, Klotz of Lovicus had a longer question that they've now crossed out. It was about like trading Rayleigh or Kanzone.
Starting point is 00:31:41 now they just say let's make it simpler who do you value more Luke Rayleigh or Canzone at this point this is probably going to come up this summer because it's going to make sense for the Mariners to trade from their major league roster to some extent to reduce some redundancy
Starting point is 00:32:02 and Rayleigh and Canzone very similar players in terms of the value they bring so yeah we're probably going to have multiple conversations about this. And it might come down to who's hotter at the time. My answer might change. But I think right now, like, I have to pick one of these guys.
Starting point is 00:32:21 Like, if the value on the trade market is the same for both of them, we just make that, like, the baseline here. I think I would prefer trading Rayleigh. The conversation has been. We've had similar conversations in the past about this, but like, hey, Canzone's a little better against Lefty. so that's a plus on his side. But Rayleigh is a better defender. He's actually a solid outfielder. He's a better runner.
Starting point is 00:32:46 He's, you know, energy guy. So he's big in the clubhouse and all that. And that to me is kind of always kept Rayleigh ahead of Canzone. But obviously now Canzone has more sample size that says what he did last year isn't a fluke. He has a little bit more club control than Rayleigh. He does still have an option left, although I don't think the mayor is going to use it. But he does still have that if you absolutely have to. and Rayleigh's defense has regressed to the point where I don't know if it's, you know, a significant difference between his glove and Dominic Canzon's glove.
Starting point is 00:33:19 Now, Rayleigh's a better runner, obviously, and all that. So it's not a no-brainer to me, but I just think because Canzone has a better shot to be an everyday player, because he can hit lefties a little bit, because Rayleigh's defense has kind of regress a little bit, And because there's just less volatility in Canzone's profile because he doesn't strike out as much as Luke. And we know Luke is an up and down hitter. Canzone is too. I mean, really every hitter is to some extent, kind of an up and down, streaky hitter. But, you know, the ups for Luke are as good as anybody, but the downs are just dreadful and, like, not competitive at bats.
Starting point is 00:34:00 And again, Canzone will have those moments too, but hits the ball hard, really. consistently he doesn't strike out as much and he can hold his own against lefties so i just think because the defense for rayley has regressed the way that it has so quickly i just think that aspect of it has kind of waned enough that i'm willing to put can zone ahead of rayley probably for the first time uh really since obviously we've been having this conversation but i would say canzone is the guy i would rather keep uh but uh i i still would be i don't say disappointed but like like I'd be bummed if they traded Luke Rayleigh. Now they traded Luke Rayley as part of a package to acquire, you know, whatever.
Starting point is 00:34:41 Fine. I'm not saying don't trade Luke Rayleigh, but like I still would be bummed. I really like Luke Rayleigh. Canzone just seems to me the more well-rounded hitter. And that's really what the conversation now comes down to for all the reasons that you just said. It's just who's the better hitter. And Canzone is very clearly the more well-rounded hitter at this point. Now, it's only 430 plate appearances.
Starting point is 00:35:05 but that's no longer small sample size. It's about a full season for a strong side platoon bat. Yeah, so over those 430 plate appearances, he's slashing 292, 353, 499. That's a 143 WRC plus with a 21.6% strikeout rate and a 7.9% walk rate. And even though the Mariners don't seem to agree with this, I think he's a much better option against Lefties
Starting point is 00:35:31 than Luke really is. I feel way more confident in Canzon's ability needed hit lefties and really just given what we saw last year. I'm not really sure why they've given Rayleigh, especially as of late or burn against lefties than Canzone. But whatever, hopefully that changes eventually. But like if you're asking me like, can any of these guys, can either of these guys become an everyday player?
Starting point is 00:35:56 I would pick Canzone. I'd say probably no shot for for Rayleigh, just given what we've seen from him against lefties. really is I mean to be an everyday player you have to obviously play against lefties and righties but Rayleigh is an exceptionally good player against right handed pitch
Starting point is 00:36:17 right handed pitch yeah and that is that is super valuable it is essentially 70% of an everyday player right and then you add on top of that you know he can run the bases late in the game he's actually really good you know it's a small ball stuff and the bunting and and he can he can help you in a lot of different ways. And you factor, like, Rayleigh's a valuable play. I'm not giving away Luke Rayleigh just to open up a roster spot for a fringe upgrade.
Starting point is 00:36:41 Like, no, if I'm trading Rayleigh, I'm trading, I'm getting something impactful. Yeah. Same goes for Canzone. But again, if you're telling me like, hey, you have to acquire, you have to include one of these guys to acquire like a, you know, eighth inning leverage arm type of reliever, then I would choose to give Luke because, again, like I said, the. the value that he did bring over Canzone, I don't think that really exists anymore just because he's regressed out in the right field. Yeah, so. Yeah. So again,
Starting point is 00:37:12 the conversation strictly comes down to who's the better bet. And to me, I think Canzone's the more well-rounded bet. Plus, he's a hard hit God. Not like Luke really doesn't crush baseballs as well. It's the strikeouts. Like 12% difference in strikeout rate just means that Canzone carries a higher floor than Rayley does. And Rayleigh doesn't counteract those strikeouts with walks either. So it's a boom or bust profile, really. And that's why we see at times that, and right now he's kind of in the midst of a downstreet right now.
Starting point is 00:37:45 That's kind of why we see those large peaks and valleys with Rayleigh. And not so much over the last year or so with Canzone. Rayleigh is a phenomenal player to have on the bench like in the playoffs because he can run into one. And because opposing managers have to manage knowing that if they make this move, there's that guy on the bench with his 150 WRC plus against Ritey's sitting there. So again, ideally, you don't trade either of these guys. I would be totally fine at the mayor's when I got an everyday right fielder and really just became a pure kind of fourth outfielder. And I mean, at that point, Robles is either off the roster or Robles is really a pure pinch runner slash. defensive replacement. One thing to keep in mind here is we hope in July that the Mariners are
Starting point is 00:38:36 not buying to make the playoffs. They're buying because they are assuming they are in and they're trying to build a playoff roster, a roster that wins playoff games. And keep in mind in the playoffs, they're only going to carry 12 pitchers at most. They're not going to carry 13. So they will have that extra bench spot available to them. And so if they can hold on to Rayleigh, they can pretty easily carry him on their postseason him and Canzone and Robles if they're all still around could all be carried on that roster pretty easily. Yeah, my
Starting point is 00:39:07 guess is though Canzone would have more trade value. I would think so. He's younger, he's got the minor league options. He's not Arb eligible until next winter, not even this winter, next winter, while, you know, Rayleigh's already making Arb. So more club control.
Starting point is 00:39:23 So yeah. But I would rather have Canzone if you made me pick between one or the other. I'm picking Canzone right now. Yeah, I think I probably would too. All right. That is going to do it for our show.
