9 to 8. The final score from T-Mobile Park. Mariners follow up last.
nights walk off with a thrilling come from behind victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in front of a whole lot of Canadians.
Tell me if you've heard that one before.
And just like that, the Mariners are now only three and a half games back of the third and final wild card with a chance tomorrow to sweep the team.
They're directly chasing.
Very possible.
They could be two and a half back after tomorrow afternoon.
So Colby, what are your thoughts after this very exciting win for the Mariners?
Is we back?
We're so back?
We're on the way to being back, but, you know, until you.
Yeah, I mean, we have like what, seven games until the deadline, eight games until the deadline.
You know, you go six and two, then fine, we're back.
But I feel like we've seen this enough times to know they're not back until they're back.
So I'd rather be late on declaring them back than early.
I'll say that much based on what we've seen.
But yeah, it's been a really impressive two days over.
at Team Mobile Park, you know, really electric atmosphere.
And you could tell the players are pretty amped for this series.
You saw it last night with, you know, Swanson's emotion and Seawald and Teo.
And like these are, these are not players who are going through the motions.
These are not just random games in July to the two teams that are playing.
Just a really good energy in the ballpark.
And the Mariners have won back-to-back games against what is probably becoming one of the better
rivalries in baseball right now.
Still ways to go, but there's no love loss between these teams and obviously the fan
bases as well. So yeah, you know, it's just so funny to look at the big differences in the
two games, both of which one run Mariner victories, which, you know, we've been accustomed
to and haven't seen a ton of this year. So that's, that's nice to see that club back in their
bag. But, you know, Friday night, it was just pitching, just ungodly pitching that you
you just threw at them and just enough offense.
And today it was the opposite.
Your pitching wasn't very good.
And your offense had a pretty unique day.
They only had eight hard hit balls all day, but seven of them actually landed for hits.
Four of them were home runs.
And despite, you know, the 11 strikeouts and no walks, you were able to, you know, get Gossman out.
You tagged them four times.
and then you were able to get right into the Blue Jay's greatest weakness,
which is that middle of the bullpen and just get to work on that.
And your own bullpen was,
it was okay.
Brash gets charged with two earned runs.
That's, I mean, no, but, you know, Brash was okay.
Spire was not very good.
Campbell, fine, whatever.
I only had to get one out.
You know, like the bullpen was okay today.
Logan Gilbert was not.
So your offense had to pick it up.
And boy, did they.
And, you know, we talk about the four cello homers.
Julio finally hit his first home run in a month.
It's been four weeks since Julio lasted a home run.
Obviously, Cal Raleigh, the easiest guy in baseball to pitch to, just such an easy out.
He goes yard twice because, of course, he does.
Tilling Moore, who, by the way, is starting to smoke the ball in his last three starts.
So I imagine he'll be in the lineup tomorrow.
So that's great to see.
But even like even some little things that from guys we don't really expect
happen in this game.
Like obviously Dimo hit the home run.
He also had a hustle double on a ball that he absolutely smoked.
You know, can we give it up for Colton Wong at least a little bit today?
Yeah.
You know, big hit, worked a really good at bat with runners on second and third.
Nobody out, one out.
Worked a single, RBI single, probably would have tied the game, had Dillmore
or not tripped a little bit as he was headed to third.
So, you know, you got contributions from just about everybody in your lineup today in one way or another.
You know, it was just kind of a good all-around effort by this offense.
And it's exactly what you want to see.
You know, you want to see the power mix in.
You want to see home runs, but you want to see them move the line as well.
And when they can hit the home run, can they still score runs?
The answer today was yes.
And they needed every last one of those runs.
So the of course sorry of course tail walks away with all the glory yet again rightfully so
But you know we shouldn't overlook Dylan Moore and Colton Wong and jp crawford
The king of of accidental hits against the blue jays on you know his game tying or yeah game tying double
That any competent first baseman makes a play on that ball but hey you know what bladdy's got a gold glove and and I've been told he earned it
So obviously that's that's a real thing.
So as we all know, Colby, you know, Juan Soto is one of the greatest
defensive outbuilders there is.
Sure.
Yeah.
So, yeah, it was just awesome.
It was a fun game.
You know, there was ups and downs and highs and lows to the Mariners fan,
Mariners fan went for everywhere from like, oh, we're back.
We got this win to, uh-oh, to, oh, my God, it's over to, oh, we're right back in it
to, oh, we're right back in it to, oh, we're going to win five runs to.
Oh, good Lord.
There's the winning run on third base with one out or tied run on third base with one out.
And, you know, Topa, Topa slams the door.
You didn't have CWall today.
He was apparently down after pitching in back-to-back games.
It's almost like you shouldn't waste your closer in a 5-0 game.
But whatever.
So he'll be back tomorrow.
Brash will be down.
But in Topa might be down as well after pitching back-to-back.
So we'll see how the bullpen is tomorrow.
But hey, you know what, tonight you celebrate because you've clinched the series win
against the Toronto Blue Jays.
And, you know, to make a huge impact, you kind of have to win tomorrow, but that's for tomorrow.
You know, tonight is a great game.
It's been awesome back-to-back, come from behind victories for this Mariner team, which is
showing a surprising amount of spunk in the face of adversity, which has not been a common
theme for this team throughout most of this year.
So showing some fight, shown some battle back.
and it's just awesome to see
and of course,
Teo comes up huge
on back to back nights.
This game was the epitome of
we're so back,
it's over,
we're so back,
it's over.
And finally,
we're so back.
Sure.
I mean,
yeah.
We're getting there,
but,
yeah,
yeah.
No,
all jokes aside,
I will not be gaslit by this team.
Go like,
win like six of your next eight,
and then we can talk.
But for now, I'm, I'm, I got my pinky toe dipped slightly into the water.
Say that.
Get to six or seven games above 500.
Then we can talk.
Like create some legitimate separation between yourself and 500.
Okay.
Have they been three or more games above 500 this year?
Uh, the highest is three.
I believe.
The highest is three.
Okay.
Yeah.
All right.
Well, that's where they can get tomorrow.
But as we've seen for the last four months,
it'll
the 500 mark will just pull you
right back in
this is now the eighth time
in Blue Jay's history they have scored eight or more
runs against the Mariners and
lost and three of those
have happened within the last nine months
shame
shame shame shame shame shame shame shame
and it just so happened
to all go down in front of those
diehard fans who made the long trip
from north of the border down to Seattle
yeah yeah don't you just feel awful for them for what they're gonna feel on the way back to canada
i'm real sorry about it yeah it's it's it's awful man but you know they'll go to timmy they'll go
to timies get a maple log right they'll sleep it off it'll be fine yeah drown their sorrows and a double
double yep they got their boys head down to the bar and take some slap shots right
go through the five hole i mean at least they got the leaps right
the Leaves who have won as many series in the last 20 years as the Cracken have in their two years of existence.
That's right.
That would be correct.
Those same Maple Leafs, yeah.
The city of Seattle.
We own Denver.
Now we own Toronto.
Let's talk about the man who owns Toronto, Cal Raleigh.
JP Crawford, too, but Prime Minister Cal Raleigh did the damn thing again today.

so back in April after the mayor's had their first of two come from behind victories this season against the Toronto Blue Jays
John Schneider manager of the Toronto Blue Jays had some interesting comments about Cal Raleigh he said
he was pretty easy to pitch to
you just have to execute
he completely disregarded
Raleigh's success so far
against the Blue Jays four home runs
and his last four games played
against them up to that point
make it now six home runs
of his last six games played against the
Toronto Blue Jays Cal Raleigh with two
bombs this afternoon right in front of
John Schneider Colby your thoughts
just waiting for him to flip off that duck out one time
like I mean
Isn't that what he's doing with the home runs, though?
More or less, but I mean, still, get a little spicier with it.
But, yeah, you know, it's just, it's tough.
John Schneider is not good at, well, anything.
He's a terrible manager.
He's terrible with the media.
Like, he sucks.
Like, let's just be clear about it.
He's really bad.
Toronto Blue Jays fans, as much as I don't like you, which is not very much.
You guys are fine, but, you know, you deserve better than John Schneider.
Because he sucks.
He's awful.
He's terrible at his job.
And the funny.
thing is, is like he's not 100% wrong.
Every batter is easy to get out if you execute because getting guys out is a lot easier
than guys getting hits.
But you haven't been able to do it.
So what are you doing talking smack?
Like he owns your franchise.
Like the least you do is put some respect to the name.
And you keep on talking about like, well, we just have to execute.
And it's like, how many times can this guy get you before you just realize it's not an execution
problem?
Maybe it's the plan that sucks.
maybe that's the problem, John, if he keeps on getting you.
So do your pitchers suck or do you suck?
Which one is it?
I think we know the answer.
So yeah, it's just, it's funny because it, it's, you almost expect it at this point.
Like, oh, Raleigh's in the lineup against the Blue Jays.
I wonder how many home runs he'll hit tonight.
Like, like you just expected at this at this point.
And honestly, if you're a Mariners fan, it is a hugely welcome site because you need
Cal Raleigh to start hitting more home runs.
And so hopefully this gets him going.
But, yeah, I mean, John Schneider continuing to be totally incompetent, which is weird to say, because we have the good, good John Schneider here in Seattle.
He's actually good at his job and earned his job and is actually, you know, rightly praised for the job he does.
But yeah, your manager sucks, Blue Jays fans.
I mean, it's not just the swap.
It's just not the swapping over Carlos Santana to the right side anymore.
He's a legitimate idiot.
John Schneider is not good at his job. He sucks.
He sucks. He doesn't know how to handle the meeting.
He doesn't know how to handle that clubhouse.
He doesn't know how to handle his pitching staff.
Guy's a moron. He's an absolute moron.
So it makes me feel better about Scott's service when I watch John Schneider try to manage a game.
It really does.
It's an absolute joke that Don Mattenly is his bench coach.
I'm not even a huge Mattingly guy, but yeah, he should absolutely be the guy instead of Schneider.
Yeah, that's ridiculous.
And it's an absolute joke that the.
made him the full-time manager after that disaster class
in the wild card round last year.
So yeah,
because he took like the second most talented roster in the American League.
And they fired and they fired Charlie Montoyo for him last year.
And as far as I'm aware,
Montoyo wasn't the problem.
They just were underperforming.
He was a scapegoat.
And by all accounts,
Montoya's great clubhouse guy,
like it seems like,
like they made a massive mistake making that swamp there.
So we.
The Mariners have benefited from that and then some.
So that's pretty cool.
Wait,
did they fire Montoyo after the sweep last year?
That's right.
The Mariners bullied the Blue Jays into hiring John Schneider,
the gift that keeps on giving.
That's incredible.
That's incredible.
It really is.
By the way,
fun note,
Ty.
You know how Blue Jays,
like social media is like our home away from home,
this is our house,
all that nonsense.
Their home away from home has not treated them well since 2019.
Keep in mind there have been some, well, there's been one bad Mariners team in 2019.
The Bluesers have won two of their last 12 at Team Mobile Park.
Yeah.
Yeah, they've lost six in a row.
And, yeah.
I don't know.
That continues.
Hope that number grows to seven in a row.
Yeah, but even if it doesn't, I still get a win.
Yeah.
Totally. Yeah, this totally puts a smile on my face.
As someone that lives in Toronto that hears all the noise from Toronto fans.
Yeah, this is nice. This is cathartic.
And even if this doesn't really lead to anything for the Mariners, I'm enjoying this for sure.
So tomorrow, the Mariners are going to go for the sweep against Alec Manoa in this Blue Jays team.
They're going to try to get two and a half back of the third and final wild card on the
American League. We're going to talk about that in just a moment.
But first, this is the locked-on Mariners podcast.
Thank you again for making us your first listen.
After the Mariners' 9-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, you can catch game three of
this series on the Mariners hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via the SXM app tomorrow.
So that game, again, we've talked about Alec Manoa.
It's been a terrible season for him altogether.
He's going to be making his third start since
being recalled from the complex league where he was working on some things,
and that's, of course, produced some mixed results.
Really nice start against the Tigers in his first start.
Terrell will start against the Padres and his last start.
So we don't really know what we're going to get here from him,
but it's a pretty decent chance on paper that the Mariners can actually pull this thing off.
So what are your thoughts just heading into that game?
Yeah, we'll see how Brian Wu looks.
We'll see if it was more of, you know, a ruster or fatigue after his last start in Minnesota,
which I had to sit through.
So we'll see which one it is.
And it's kind of a tough spot you're in because Logan didn't give you length like you needed today.
So your bullpen's still in kind of rough shape right now.
And you don't have an off day until Thursday.
So you kind of need Brian Wu to go deep in this game.
But also you kind of can't let Brian Wu go that deep in this game.
So, you know, the Mariners did have to.
to use what, four or five guys today out of the five guys out of the bullpen today as well.
You have to assume Topa's down after having pitch back to back days.
You have to assume that Matt Brash is down after throwing 30-some-odd pitches today.
So, yeah, the Mariners bullpen is kind of in a tight spot tomorrow.
So you kind of need length out of Wu, but you kind of know you're not going to get it.
So we'll see how they go that route.
That's why I would love to see the Mariners jump on Minowa early.
as you would with any pitcher, but I think it's especially important so that Wu can go out there be super aggressive with the fastball.
I mean, we know Toronto's good fastball hitting teams.
So it's a tough, it's a tough challenge for Wu.
It's not a great matchup to begin with.
Thankfully, not a ton of lefties in this Blue Jays lineup that are going to do damage.
So that should help Wu a little bit.
But he's got to have the slider tomorrow because, you know, the fastball wasn't that good against Minnesota.
We don't know what we're going to see from him in terms of, you know, again, rust versus fatigue.
or anything like that.
So he's going to need the slider tomorrow.
It's going to have to show up.
And if he can do that, if you can go five,
maybe cross your fingers,
he can get through six.
And then you should be in pretty good shape
because I do think Manoa will give you opportunities
to score off of him.
But you never know.
Like obviously Manoa is a much more talented pitcher
than the year he's having.
And it's hard to imagine that that talent
just doesn't play out at some point this year.
And maybe it's maybe it happens against you.
So that's why, again, it was pretty critical to get the one today.
But, yeah, I think the Mariners have a good shot to get the sweep.
Again, we'll have to see what we get from Brian Wu.
And, you know, I wouldn't be shocked if they made yet another move to add somebody to this bullpen just because, you know, it's not in great shape.
And again, you still have four more games until your first break since the All-Star game.
It's kind of a brutal schedule right out of the gate.
So, yeah, I like their chances.
I imagine we'll see Cal obviously will be in the lineup tomorrow.
I bet we see Dylan Moore back in the lineup tomorrow.
You know, we'll see if Colton Wong earned himself a second start against the righty.
But yeah, it's, I think we're probably going to see one of them.
And then I bet I bet Ford gets the day off tomorrow.
I would imagine that Taylor Tremel, who's recalled today,
or Kay Marlow maybe get the D.H day or they play right field and Tay Oscar gets the DH day.
So we'll see.
or you might have a rare opportunity to give Julio the D.H. Day because Tramel can handle centerfield.
So we'll see what they do with all that. We'll see what the lineup looks like tomorrow.
But I think they have a pretty good shot to get this sweep.
But I think it's going to come down to Brian Wu.
I think he has to go at least five strong innings.
And the Mariners are going to have to score three, four runs off of Manoa.
And if they can do that and they can push that pitch count early, they can get to this bullpen,
which isn't all that good for Toronto, especially the middle.
the middle parts of that bullpen
and you know
they can tack on at the end so I think they have a good chance
it's just tough to really get a good feel for this
because we don't know what Alec Manoa you're going to get
and honestly we don't know what Brian Wu
we're going to get either so right
yeah the last time we saw Manoa
was in game one of that series back in April
and he had a lot of command issues
some walk issues but they weren't really able to
take full advantage of that so hopefully
this time around if those
issues are still plaguing him.
They're able to do some more damage than they were the last time around.
And we'll see if the, uh, to Oscar Hernandez revenge series continues.
And I just say real quick, I feel, I feel so vindicated.
I feel so vindicated after the last two days.
I feel this is, yeah, this is amazing.
Uh, I want to ask you, you know, with now the injuries to Kelnick and Pollock,
does that at all make it less likely that they would trade?
Tay Oscar because of the lack of depth in the outfield.
I mean, I know that they've called up for Mel and they've called up Marlowe and they have Deloche still in AAA, but.
I think if they were to trade Tay Oscar, it's going to be, they're going to take as much time as humanly possible before they make that call.
Because the one thing you don't want to do is you don't want to trade Tay Oscar on July 24th.
And then on July 31st, you know, Julio hits the IL with a wrist injury or something like that.
And then all of a sudden, you're two and a half games back, but you've traded Teo.
Now you've lost Kalink and you've lost Julio.
You kind of need that middle of the order bad.
And honestly, it's pretty unlikely that you can acquire a hitter who's better than Teosker, even this version of Teosker, which is pretty inconsistent.
So I don't think they're going to trade him because I don't think that the return package on Teo by himself is going to be worth more than Seattle just keeping him,
seeing if they can, you know, get hot at the right time, jump into the playoffs.
And then maybe this winter you, you slap the QO on them and take your chances in free agency.
But also, you know, we talked about this the other day, the comments about, you know,
Tay Oscar being, you know, Nelson Cruz like in that clubhouse and what that means for,
for leadership and stuff like that.
And it doesn't sound like a player that the Mariners want to move.
I mean, the Mariners don't want to trade really anybody.
off of their roster.
That's not,
you know,
they're not,
I can't wait to get Paul Seawald out of here.
That's not what's happening here,
but no,
you have to,
you have to be open to it.
You certainly do,
but I think that if they trade to Oscar,
it's going to be on August 1st or July 31st or it's going to be very late in the game.
And it's,
it's probably going to be because that they,
you know,
lost four or five or something like that at the end.
I bet,
I'm guessing they're having those conversations right now.
They're getting things lined up.
So they do have to pull that trigger.
They can.
But I don't think they're going to pull it.
Um,
I think he's probably going to finish out the year here.
And then I would say it's a true 50-50 shot if he comes back or not.
I would say it's 50-50, which honestly is up from where it was a month ago.
So I think it's trending in the right direction.
And, you know, last night, I mean, every walk-off win is going to produce a very excited response from the club, right?
But they seemed a little, like, extra stoked for Teo and what he was able to do last night,
against this former team.
It seems like this clubhouse,
to me,
does really enjoy having Teo be around.
So with that and with the comments from Scott,
et cetera.
So again,
you need good players at the major league level.
So,
you know,
if you think that maybe there's a off chance
you can work out an extension
before he hits the open market,
not likely.
I'm sure he's going to want to test the market first.
But,
or, you know,
just get to,
to the to free agency slap the QO on him have those kind of exclusive talks with him
preliminary talk and talks with him before he hits the market and then you know see if he can
bring him back here because it does seem like he's someone that that fits what they want that
fits the culture that fits exactly kind of you know what they want out of their especially
out of their veterans because they have so few veterans on the club as well this is still a really
really young team even next year with guys getting another year under their belt so yeah
we'll see how it all goes but uh last few days have been really fun watching tayo watching this
team play right now minus the the defense in the seven minus the defense but he made up for it he made up for
it and that's all that matters no he did he did he did he made i'm just saying it would have been six
you know you would have been up eight to six and you wouldn't have needed the ninth run but whatever you
gave up one run got back two so to me that that balances out that balances that balances
I mean, yeah, I mean, yeah, I think we'll have a good idea of what, what the Mariners, like, plan of attack is with Teo based on what they do at the deadline, because I think if they go out and they add, you know, like Kana, like we've talked about. Yeah. I think that's insurance, right? In case Teo leaves, we have at least this average, you know, outfielder who can hit a little bit to replace him. I think if they go out and they get, you know, a, I don't know, a rental.
I don't know which outfielder, maybe Gritchhuck or something like that, then I think maybe it says, hey, you know, we think Teo can be a part of this thing long term.
Or it could mean none of those things because nobody knows what's happening right now.
Nobody.
They're going to retool the outfield in the offseason, you know, who knows.
Who knows?
I mean, yeah, but obviously you're a better lineup with Tay Oscar in it and without.
So slap the QO on him.
You know, best case scenario, you get a deal done that everybody likes and makes a lot of sense for your timeline.
You know, worst case scenario, he leaves.
and you probably get a draft pick after the second round,
which is probably going to be worth more
than you can get for him straight up in the trade right now.
So we got some, I won't say necessarily promising news,
but some hopeful news regarding Jared Kellnick this morning
from Jerry to Potow,
four to six week timeline for his return.
So early September is essentially the window that Jerry has set.
But that's at the earliest.
And again, you're kind of pushing against the clock there a little bit.
So if there is a setback, if he does need something, you know, an extended rehab stent,
you might, you might not get a lot of games out of Jared for the rest of the season.
So we'll see.
You have to treat Jared as a bonus.
Yeah.
So, yeah, you can't count on getting anything out of Jared the rest of the way.
You can't.
Oh, we just ride Tremel for August and then wait for counting.
You can't do that.
So with that said, I'd be pretty stunned now with the end.
injury to Pollack on top of Kellnick if they didn't walk away from the trade deadline with
another outfielder, at least one other outfielder, maybe two, especially if they trade
Teo.
Yeah, they got to get at least one and probably a DH type as well.
But yeah, they're going to have to acquire an outfielder.
Yeah.
So see how that all goes.
And obviously whatever happens over the next few days is going to potentially heavily determine
what their plan is heading into the deadline.
again they're in this weird position where everything up to this point has been pretty disappointing but also again they're one good run away from all of that kind of disappearing
again the american league will not kill the seattle mariners and the mariners won't do it themselves so yeah yeah the seattle mariners won't kill the seattle mariners
yeah so we're kind of stuck in this in this limbo um and you know i know you look at it and there's three teams ahead of you before you get into the wildcard
fight, but you're tied with Anaheim, you're a game back of Boston, you're a game and a half
back of the Yankees who are kind of free falling right now.
Like, you're three good days away from being the first team out, you know what I mean?
Or even being in that wildcard spot.
So yeah, you're definitely not out of it.
And obviously, you know, if you can win tomorrow or maybe you sweep the twins, if you can win
three out of these next four somehow, then I think, you know, going after the ring.
mental types, even the expensive ones, is definitely back on the table.
So we'll see.
You know, it's, it's funny how quick a season can turn.
But when half of the American League is mediocre right there with you, then anything can
happen in the third wildcard spot very much in play.
Also the second wild card spot.
Well, Colby, look at that.
Two straight days and we didn't get kicked out of the room.
Yet.
