Starting point is 00:00:00 The Mariners' first real heater of 2026 is still going after yet another walk-off win. How are they getting this done? Let's talk about it. Colby, hit it. You are Locked-on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Ahoy, Sailors, it is Tuesday, June 2nd, 2026.
Starting point is 00:00:28 My name is Tadding-Az, and I'm joined as always by my co-cove Colby Patnode. On today's show, we'll talk about Emerson Hancock starting last night's 3 to 2. to win over the Mets and we'll dive into the numbers of the Mariners 7 game win streak. But let's start by talking about everything else that happened in last night's game. Colby, Josh Naylor and Colt Emerson with a pair of solo homers.
Starting point is 00:00:48 However, Josh Nailer, after his homer, had to leave this game with back spasms. We'll see if he's able to be in the lineup tonight or at the very least tomorrow afternoon. Cole Young flipping a single into left field, walk things off, scoring Randy or Rosarana there in the bottom of the 10th. And that was made possible by what this bullpen did,
Starting point is 00:01:08 specifically Gabe Spire in the top of the 10th. The Mariners have walked their opponent off in three of their last four games. And a big reason for that is that the bullpen has kept their opponent off the board in the top half of the 10th inning, allowing for the Mariner's to just score the Manford Man. And that's it. That's all they need to do to win. Simple as that. And thankfully, for the Mariners, sometimes,
Starting point is 00:01:34 it's not that simple, but it has been that simple in all three of these walk-off wins for the Marys. Spire was awesome. Last night, two strikeouts, striking out Juan Soto, striking out Mark Viantos. That was sick. Jose Ferrer scoreless inning. Matt Brash, scoreless inning. Andres Munoz, scoreless inning, a strike out of piece for each of those three guys. This pitching staff, Colby, aside from what happened Friday, the little hiccup there with George
Starting point is 00:02:03 Kirby, Matt Brash, Andre Smoff. But he's side from that, this pitching stuff has been awesome over the stretch. Yeah, like you said, just a little hiccup on Friday, but it is nice to see that both Brash and Munoz were able to come in and kind of bounce back from that outing. Both of them had rough nights on Friday, and they both looked pretty good. No, Brash hit a guy, got a little lucky, I guess, on the double play. I mean, whatever. But yeah, the slider was filthy. Same goes for Munoz.
Starting point is 00:02:37 Got a couple of both of those guys got some strikeouts on that pitch, that back foot slider to a couple of lefties. And, you know, Pereira just doing what he does, being daddy and all. And Gabe Spire had himself a daddy performance again after striking out Soto with the go-head run on second base and really just carving up those lefties. And the fastball touched 97 a few times. like Gabe looks good since he's returned from the IL, which is great.
Starting point is 00:03:07 Because obviously they put a lot on Ferrer's plate in the first, you know, two months of this season. So it would be nice to have a second quality lefty out there. And we know Gabe is fully capable of it. He was, you know, really good for most of last year. And he was really good. You know, when he's healthy, Gabe Spire is traditionally very good, especially against left-handed hitters.
Starting point is 00:03:28 And so it's really good to have that guy out there. Also, you know, got the intos on the back foot slider. too. So a couple of big Ks from from Gabe there. The Velo's back. Then the Mariners, you know, have two high leverage lefties out there, which most teams don't really even have one.
Starting point is 00:03:44 True high leverage lefty in their bullpen. So that's a really good sign. You hope Munoz and Brasch can carry this forward and string a couple of these outings together to start to feel good about those two guys. Brash has mostly been very good this year. But, you know, strikeouts haven't really been
Starting point is 00:04:00 there. It just doesn't look quite the same as pre-Tommy John, Matt Brash. Munoz, we've certainly seen moments where he looks like his old self, but we've seen a lot of moments where he hasn't either. So you just like a little more consistency from him. You'd like a little more swing and miss from Brash. And then we'll see what happens with Bizarro, who's the only leverage guy who didn't pitch yesterday, although I imagine he probably was getting ready to pitch the 11th.
Starting point is 00:04:25 So, yeah, the Mariners bullpen bounced back in a big way. And it's been very good, again, aside from Friday, it's been very good. really all year. A couple isolated incidents where games got away from them, sure. But in the grand scheme of things, the marries bullpen's been very, very good. And it hasn't even been 100% healthy all year either. And it hasn't even had its best pitcher really pitching all that well all year either. So the bullpen could still be even better, but it's been very good recently.
Starting point is 00:04:51 And obviously, you know, it came on the back or it came following another really solid start from the Mariners rotation, which has also been very good on the six-game home stand. not counting Friday or the street not counting Friday so yeah the Mariners pitching very well hitting home runs that's the formula always has been and they're just starting to do it consistently now and you see the results they won seven games in a row yeah unfortunately not a particularly great night for the Mariners offense but they were able to get a couple of solo homers uh Cole emerson with his third home run of the season kind of wraps his bat around a sweeper from Sean Mania very impressive from the young Colt Emerson.
Starting point is 00:05:34 And again, you know, Manaya was eaten up this lineup. You know, there weren't many guys that were able to really pick up Manaya and his weird, you know, delivery and all that, that cross-body delivery that he has. It's very, very strange look. But Emerson, you know, left on left there, it's a very difficult matchup. And he's able to get to that pitch on the outside corner. Very cool stuff from Cold Emerson there. Yeah, all three of the Mariners runs last night were scored. on left-on-left hits.
Starting point is 00:06:03 Yeah. So, you know, we talk a lot about, hey, the Marriss need to be better against left-handed pitching. Rob Ruff-Snerner needs to be better, but, well, the lefties have to hit lefties, too, a little bit at the very least. And last night, they did just enough against the lefties to win this game.
Starting point is 00:06:19 So, yeah, it, again, Emerson home run, pretty impressive, first time seeing Mania. He's not going to see many attack angles like that, left-on-left. And, you know, the sweeper basically started behind him. and ended up in the middle of the plate, and he kept his front shoulder closed, and he wrote it out of here.
Starting point is 00:06:36 A really impressive piece of hitting from Colt. You know, he's a guy who sometimes looks a little overmatched. He looked overmatch later in this game. It was against Luke Weaver. Just kind of messed with him, toyed with him, which a lot of lefties struggle against Luke Weaver, so it's not really a problem. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:54 But he still seems like once or twice every game, he gives you like a super impressive at bat, especially considering his age and you're just like yeah it's it's really only a matter of time before it for this guy becomes like an all-star regular consistent performer and he has been pretty darn good since the mariners called him up we talked about this on the patreon yesterday numbers buoyed a little bit by the four-for-four performance with the three doubles you take that game out aside from that game he's been okay but not great but yeah obviously you just continues to find a way to contribute continues to find a way to get some big hits. And he certainly is an upgrade over what the Mariners had mostly been throwing out there at third base because of the injuries to Brennan Donovan. And the sheer number of played appearances that Leo Rebos is getting. Colt Emerson's better baseball player than Leo Rivas. Shocking, I know. But yeah, that certainly has been a nice little upgrade there for the Mariners. Yeah, Emerson's been great, especially, you know, to have like that kind of power out of the
Starting point is 00:07:56 nine hole as well. He's been a lot of fun to watch. want to bring up his overall season numbers here real quick, following the Homer last night, because I think his WRC Plus now is somewhere in the 150-ish range. Yeah, it's 156 now, 250, 3, 4568. Like you mentioned, you know, big part of that is the four-hit game in Kansas City, but he had it, nothing we can do about it.
Starting point is 00:08:20 Yeah, so, so, yeah, three homers already for Emerson, eight RBI, you know, striking out 28% of the time after striking out 27.2%. down in AAA, but also, you know, counteracting that a little bit with the 10% walk rate as well. So, you know, seeing some really nice stuff out of Cole Emerson to start his career. And he's already worth half a win by Fangraph standards. All right. So let's dive into the numbers of the Mariners seven game win streak in just a moment. But first a reminder, this episode of the Locktime Marrace podcast is brought to you by five-hour energy.
Starting point is 00:08:54 If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, then you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat without all the sugar. That supercast.com to learn more. All right. So let's dive into the numbers of the Mariners seven game win streak and figure out just exactly how they are doing this right now. Obviously, the pitching staff has been sensational like we talked about in the first segment, especially the starting rotation. They are leading the league over the stretch in the ERA with a 137.
Starting point is 00:10:31 They're also rocking a 267-fip, 938Ks per 9, 183 walks per 9, over 39 and a third innings of work. And this, of course, also dates back to before the win streak. But I did want to mention this that in the piggyback, the starter of the piggyback hasn't given up a run, whether it's Bryce Miller or Luis Castillo. All five earn runs or six runs in total have been given up by. whoever came out of the bullpen and the piggyback. I think that's incredibly impressive. The bullpen for the Mariners has also been very good. Third right now and win probability added plus 1.01, which is fantastic.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Though not as good as the rotation, would really like to see the strikeouts go up. They have the fifth or the fourth worst Ks per 9 mark of any team over the stretch. the 6-4-1. Obviously, that's not a new issue. That's something that we've talked about for a while. But again, would really like to see this bullpen be able to get more strikeouts than they are right now.
Starting point is 00:11:40 However, over the stretch, they are generating a 60.3% ground ball rate. That is by far, tops in the league over the stretch. And the Mariners Enfield defense, well, still not great, has been a lot better over this latest strike. and they're eating up a lot of those ground balls.
Starting point is 00:12:02 So it's ultimately worked out pretty well for the Mariners and for the Mariners Bullpen. 236 ERA for the Mariners Bullpen, 376 BIP for them as well. And like we talked about in the first segment, the Marys have won, or they've walked off their opponent three times in the last four games. Big reason for that is that this bullpen has been able to keep their opponent off the board in the top half of the 10th,
Starting point is 00:12:26 which has led to some relatively easy walkoff. off wins for Seattle. That's been huge. Offensively, the Mariners are rocking the third highest WRC Plus in Major League Baseball over the stretch, 145 with a 290, 331, 544 slash line. They are leading the league and home runs hit over the stretch with 18. And they're doing that despite having the fifth lowest hard hit rate in all of baseball over the stretch. they also have the worst walk rate in all the baseball over the stretch.
Starting point is 00:13:04 But they're hitting homers. They're getting back to their identity of hitting homers and pitching incredibly well. And Colby is not really that much of a surprise here that they are winning as many games as they are right now, getting back to that formula. No, I think in general, if you out Homer and out pitch your opponent, you're probably going to win. in that game. In fact, I believe the win percentage of teams that score more runs and their opponents is 100%. So, yeah, you do that seven times in a row.
Starting point is 00:13:40 You're probably going to go 7 and 0, but this is the formula. It is the formula that the Mariners have built their last three or four teams on. It is you pitch and you hit home runs. And then maybe you find a way to scratch together a run or two here and there that's not off of a home run when you really need. need it and that's what happened and that's really what has happened in this you know seven game win street because they've just out homered their opponent and they pitched really really well both the rotation and and the bullpen as well again minus a little hiccup on on Friday but it's going to happen
Starting point is 00:14:15 that's why you don't typically win seven games in a row there's usually a clunker in there if you play seven games in a week um so yeah and this team doesn't need to win seven in a row if they'd won six of seven that would be just fine too but uh it's It is one of those things where it's like, you know, some people can be annoyed about the, oh, they're too relying on the home run ball. That's how they're built. Like that is the way that they want to win games. They want to hit home runs because they know it's very hard to string hits together in the modern age of major league baseball.
Starting point is 00:14:43 It's very hard to string hits together. It's really hard to get an extra base hit that's not a home run at Team Mobile Park where you play half of your games. So this is just kind of the formula that they have to work with. They have to hit the ball over the fence. They have to pitch very well. and that's just a good way to build your team when you play half your games at T-Mobile Park. Hit the home run, pitch.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Pitch to the big part of the ballpark, get some dudes in the bullpen who can either get a lot of ground balls or they can get a lot of strikeouts and just try and win games that way. It's how they're designed. It's the game plan, and they're executing it very well right now, and they're doing it without Cal Raleigh, who's obviously a huge part of the home run, you know,
Starting point is 00:15:24 home run strategy. and they're also doing it without Brennan Donovan, who was supposed to provide more of the classic, you know, runner on second one out, get an RBI single to left field type of approach. So they are doing it without two of, you know, arguably their two best hitters, kind of depends on how you want to, you know, look at it. But two of their best four or five hitters at the very least.
Starting point is 00:15:49 They're doing that without them. And obviously they're working their way back right now. So, yeah, the offense, again, It's not pretty, a lot of really ugly at-bats in between all the home runs. But again, if you hit home runs, it really does. It's like a magic eraser. Hashtag not sponsored. It just takes away all the ugliness right away, and you can win ball games as long as you're hitting home runs.
Starting point is 00:16:13 And again, the Mariners are going to have to find a way to win games without hitting home runs. At some point, they're going to need to, you know, grind out a four to three win where they're just hitting, you know, singles and doubles. but one thing that's also worth noting is aside from yesterday really the mariners have gotten plenty of hits they're not scoring you know they're not hitting four home runs and getting four hits you know so right now you could argue that yeah they're hitting home runs they're not but they're not even clicking all the way yet because they're not hitting the home runs with guys on base but they have lots of guys on base right now so it is kind of this thing where we could talk about like oh it's it's a little unsustainable but also it's also been a little unlucky that they've hit their home runs
Starting point is 00:16:52 with nobody on base. And like when you read the slash line, it's not like they're not getting guys on base to hit multi. You know, so they're hitting a ton of sole home runs for a team that has that high of and on base. So they're drawing walks, they're hitting home runs,
Starting point is 00:17:04 a ton of power, and they're pitching. They're going to win a lot of ball games, and they're an extremely dangerous World Series caliber team. If you walk, hit homers and pitch, you can make a deep playoff run with just those three statistical advantages. So let's wrap up by talking about Emerson Hancock's
Starting point is 00:17:22 start in last night's three to two win over the Mets coming up. And you're listening to the Locktime Mariner's podcast, part of the Locktime Podcast Network, your team every day. As always, if you want to hear from me and Colby even more and help support the show, we have a Patreon. It's called Control the Zone. On there, we talk Mariners, Seahawks, all that good stuff. For more information, go to Patreon.com forward slash control the zone link in the description of this episode. So last night, Emerson Hancock goes six innings against this Mets lineup, gives up two earn runs on two hits both of those solo shots one from jared young the other from marcus simeon seven strikeouts for hancock no walks on 91 pitches to seven hard hit balls on the night not too many whiffs for hancock but nice to see the strikeouts start to come back around he hadn't been getting a lot of strikeouts as of late but seven last night and six innings that'll play what did you think of hancock's start to come back around he hadn't been given getting a lot of strikeouts as of late but seven last night and six innings that'll play what did you think of hancock's start
Starting point is 00:18:22 last night, Colby, as this incredible season for him just continues. Yeah, I mean, obviously, pretty good. You know, I do have some level of, not concerned, but like a watching point. The fastball is getting hit a little harder than it was earlier this year. But, you know, the sweepers remained very good, and he seems to have found more command over that than he had. It doesn't periodically lose it as much. Remember in April he almost threw like forward of the backstop. Like it was like one of start that he just spiked.
Starting point is 00:18:57 Not really doing that anymore. He's starting to sprinkle in the cutter more as well. And that's been an effective pitch for him. So the fastball value might be going down slightly. The, you know, the slug on it is pretty high. But the sweeper's still very good. The cutter has kind of emerged. And sometimes I think they miscategorized the sweeper in the cutter.
Starting point is 00:19:17 They kind of, so it's a little tough to know what the true percentages are. but he's also kind of introduced a curb ball over the last, you know, a few starts. And the curb ball is kind of a weird pitch to throw from that low of an arm angle. Typically, it's hard to get on top of the baseball from that arm angle. So, but it is something that, you know, kind of changes eye levels. And he can throw up for a strike and he still has the change up, although he doesn't use it a ton. He can use it effectively, especially against lefties. So, yeah, overall Hancock, again, continues to be very good.
Starting point is 00:19:49 he's been your best starter this year. Certainly your most consistent. He's gone six plus innings, I think, in three-fourths of his starts, nine out of 12, I believe. He's gone at least six, and he's never gone less than five. It's very good. It's very impressive. He throws strikes.
Starting point is 00:20:07 He gets value out of the fastball, even though I still little concerned that that pitch is starting to trend down, not be low-wise, but maybe the league is just making an adjustment to it a little bit. But he's still getting plenty of outs on. on the sweeper and again the cutter and the curveball, two pitches that he's kind of slowly phased in since the start of the year, both have some pretty good results on them.
Starting point is 00:20:29 So I do think that Emerson continues to evolve. And that arm angle, that fastball, is still critically important. So hopefully would the numbers start to turn back a little bit, a little bit more favorably to what they were in April? But still, if the fastball is even slightly above average, everything else with that arm angle with his ability to throw strikes. It's going to play up.
Starting point is 00:20:52 This stuff is pretty good, and he should continue to have reasonable success. I think his, I think like his kind of comp going forward, it's a little bit Luis Castillo, you know, when the Mariners first acquired him. It's maybe not quite that many strikeouts, but it's the low arm angle. It's a fastball up in the zone. It's a slider off of both, off that pitch, the sinker of the two, the two seamer and the four seamer both of them working, although I don't really like the sinker for him.
Starting point is 00:21:23 I just, I don't like the sinker in general for a lot of pitchers. I just feel like it's overused, but whatever, that's not a, not a thing to talk about today. But yeah, it's the fastball at the top of the zone,
Starting point is 00:21:33 followed by the breaking stuff. And then he's even, like I said, he's got the cutter now too, which is a nifty little pitch. And, yeah, he seems to still be adapting to, which is great.
Starting point is 00:21:42 He's continuing to tinker. He's continuing to add pitches, continuing to refine command and his delivery and all that. So Hancock continues to tweak little things here and there, and he continues to put up numbers and results. So, yeah, he's in the All-Star conversation. As for whether or not he'll make the team.
Starting point is 00:22:00 I don't know. There's nothing we can do about that as fans. That's John Schneider's decision, which gross. But, yeah, so we'll see if he makes it. I wouldn't, like, obviously he'll have to have a really good month of June. Good start yesterday, but pitchers are taken late. they don't get voted on. So we'll have to have a really good month of June.
Starting point is 00:22:20 But if goes into July, kind of sitting where he is right now in terms of like rankings in the American League, he'll probably be an all-star. If not as a, you know, first selection, he will be one of the replacements after, you know, half a dozen pitchers drop out of the thing like they do every year. So, yeah, Wu's on track to be, or will, well, maybe Wu, too, but Hancock's on track to be an all-star this year, which is not something anybody had on their bingo card, except for maybe Emerald. person's mother, but certainly nobody thought this was possible. And it's not even really the same guy. It's like Amber Sankock's been body snatched by, you know, a talented starting pitcher. And this is the result.
Starting point is 00:23:01 So really good on him and good on the work you put in. And another really good outing last night. I think it's not a great lineup. I think we can say the Mets lineup's not very good. But there's still some landmines in it. That's for sure. So, nice job by him. And they're better as of late.
Starting point is 00:23:17 like the show Bichette has been a show has been on a little bit of a heater over the last couple of weeks. One Soto. Soto's incredible. Yeah, Soto is Soto. Jared Young's on a heater right now.
Starting point is 00:23:31 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so Hancock on the season, 892, Ks per 9, 191, walks per 9, 280, 280, FIPP, with 1.1 FIFOR, with 1.1 F. Over 70 and two-thirds,
Starting point is 00:23:45 innings pitch. one little blemish here the homers would like to see him get the homers down he's had a little bit of a problem there 13 and a half percent homer in the fly ball rate he's overall giving up 10 homers in 70 and 2 3rds inning so we'd like to see that go down a little bit but overall like he said he's been very very good this year and has blown basically every everyone's expectations out of the water and has owned us and so on and so forth but
Starting point is 00:24:16 it's been a lot of fun to watch um whose flag list is he on he wasn't on your flag list though he wasn't my honorable mentions that's not your flag list that's not your flag list so yeah that's that's not that's not your flag list i'm sorry he got bumped by bryce miller and i don't even remember who else was on that list um Jose ferrer was forer okay yeah colion colion i mean did you I think I did, yeah. My list is pretty good. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:51 I know she didn't want to do an update on the list this month. Oh, yeah, yeah. We should do that. Interesting. Thank you for reminding me. No, actually, you know what? We'll do that Thursday because tomorrow we got the post game show. Yep.
