Welcome to Locked-on Mariner's, part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day.
Here's your host, D.C. Lundberg.
Yep, as Aerosmith once said, same old story, same old song and dance.
Welcome to Locked-on Mariners, gang. This is D.C. Lundberg, and we, of course, are part of the Locked-on Podcast Network.

That is L-U-N-D-B-E-R-G for those scoring at home.
Well, Mariners, they dropped another one to the Angels,
and we will get to exactly what happened in just a second,
but before the game, this was the day where Major League rosters had to be trimmed from 30 players to 28 players.
And prior to the game, the Mariners did send two players to their alternate training site.
Pitcher Brian Shaw was one of the two who were optioned to Tacoma.
I didn't know he had minor league options left, so he stays in the organization.
He really struggled at the Major League level of the season gang after being released by the Rockies,
I think his ERA for the season is 27.
He struggled in almost every outing, left a lot of balls over the plate to be hit very hard.
He wasn't fooling anybody, and he wasn't finding the strike zone consistently.
The other player who was sent out was first baseman outfielder Jose Mormalejos,
and I certainly hope that this is not the last time that I say Jose Marmalajos on this show,
because he has a fantastic name.
Scott Service was pleased with the way he was swinging the bat a lot of the time.
From what I saw, he was swinging over some breaking balls and some off-speed pitches and some sinkers that were diving out of the zone, and he accumulated a lot of strikeouts that way.
He does have the one home run, which was fairly well-struck, and his three Major League RBI come on that home run.
Now to the game itself.
Well, the Angels did get the scoring started, as it were, in the second inning, and it was a home run by Shohei Otani, who was coming on.
off of an injury. This was his first game in a while, ladies and gentlemen.
And he wound up going one for three with that home run and a walk. Two runs scored.
And we will now move to the fourth inning and stop me if you've heard this before.
But Taiwan Walker was pitching okay up until that point.
And then it all fell apart. Mike Trout singled to lead off the inning.
Anthony Rendon walks, Shohei Otani walks, and all of the sudden you've got the bases loaded.
and boy, it happened quick.
Tommy Lestella was the next hitter,
and he hits a single to score Mike Trout.
Anthony Rendon who advances only to third base,
Otani to second.
Base is still loaded.
Justin Upton's hit by a pitch.
3-0-L-A.
Brian Goodwin is the next batter
who's had a hot hand against the Mariners
looked wonderful in that series in Anaheim against the M's,
but he fouled out in this hit bat.
Next batter was Max Stasi,
who has had a pretty good season against the Mariners of his own,
and he hit a sack fly.
Otani scores on the play.
Tommy Lestella moved up to third.
Luis Reithel then walks,
sending Justin up to the second base.
There are two batters on at this time.
And Joey Gerber came in to replace Taiwan Walker,
and he induces a forceout from David Fletcher to end that fourth inning.
In the bottom of the fourth inning,
the Mariners would answer back with the bases empty and one away.
Daniel Vogelback hit his first home run of the season.
season to put the Mariners on the scoreboard and bring this score to four to one.
Scoring would resume in the eighth inning, and it was the Angels doing the scoring once again.
Tommy Listella led off that eighth inning with a double against Nestor Cortez,
and then following a pop out and strikeout to Justin Upton and Brian Goodwin respectively.
Max Stasi does it again.
His fourth home run of the season, all of them against the Mariners, ladies and gentlemen,
put two more runs on the board, as Lestella was on second base at the time,
and the score went to 6 to 1.
And that was the final score, ladies and gentlemen.
Talking about Joey Gerber here just for a brief second,
this was a second Major League game,
and he had said that one of his dreams was to face Mike Trout,
and he did so leading off the fifth inning,
and he induced a ground out to shortstop J.P. Crawford.
So young Gerber,
wins that battle against future Hall of Famer and Mariner Killer Mike Trout.
Leave it to a Trout to thrive in the Pacific Northwest.
Anyways, for the day, Taiwan Walker goes only three and two-thirds innings pitched,
gives up three hits, four runs, all of them earned, three walks, three strikeouts,
and that home run that we mentioned.
Joey Gerber pitched a perfect one-and-one-thirds innings.
Tyler Gilbo pitched an inning, Donald Tevilla pitched an inning,
and then Nestor Cortez, pardon me, pitched the final two innings and gave up that two-run, home run to Max Stasi that we mentioned.
Mariner's only accumulated four hits on the day, one apiece by J.P. Crawford, Daniel Vogelback, Shedlong Jr., and Malix Smith,
who was playing center field today in Kyle Lewis's stead, who was given the day off.
Malik Smith, with his one for three-day, brought his batting average all the way up to 100.
Yay.
We'll set up the weekend series
against the Colorado Rockies
in the second half of today's program.
But before we do any of that,
we're going to get to the Mariners trivia question.
Max Stasi, a new mariner killer, it seems,
has mostly been a backup catcher
in his big league career,
which began in 2013 with the Houston Astros.
Including yesterday's home run,
how many of his 16 career home runs
have come at the expense of the Seattle
Mariner's answer following this from Rock Auto.
With the ever-increasing numbers of makes and models, it is impossible to stock all the
parts that are needed in a traditional chain storefront.
Why endure often pointless or seemingly intimidating questioning and wait while the
counterman orders the parts on his computer and you know that he is looking to choose the only
brand that his store carries?
You've got computers with access to rockado.com at home and write in your own pocket.
Why would you choose to spend 30%, 50%?
100% more for the exact same auto parts at a chain store or dealership.
No reason to do that.
Chain stores, you know, they've got different price tiers for professional mechanics and do it yourselfers.
On the other hand, rockado.com's prices are the same for everybody and they are reliably low.
Rockado.com is a family business, serving auto parts customers online for 20 years.
Go to rockato.com to shop for auto and body parts from hundreds of manufacturers, whether it's for your classic or daily.
driver, get everything you need in a few easy clicks delivered directly to your door.
The rock auto.com catalog is unique and remarkably easy to navigate.
Quickly see all the parts available for your vehicle and choose the brands, specifications,
and prices that you prefer.
Why spend up to twice as much money on the same parts?
That's really stupid.
Go to rock auto.com.
That's not stupid.
To see all the parts available for your car, truck, crossover, van, SUV, skateboard,
roller skates, whatever you drive, they got it.
Right locked on in there, how did you hear about us box, so they know that we sent you.
Amazing selection, reliably low prices, all the parts your car will ever need.
Rockado.com.
Answer to the Mariners trivia question is this.
Max Stasi has hit 16 career home runs, and six of them have come at the expense of the Seattle
Mariners, the next highest opponent or the Oakland.
A's and Texas Rangers against whom he has both hit two.
So he's hit three times as many home runs against the Mariners as he has against the highest
total of the next highest opponent.
Anyways, if you've got a question for me or a comment on the show, please send an email
to Lockdown Mariners at gmail.com, and I will read your letter on the air and reply to it.
Tell me you love the show. Tell me the show sucks. Ask me a baseball question. Ask me a
non-baseball question, any and all comments are welcome aside from dirty ones.

Now time for the second half of Locked-on Mariners.
Once again, your host, D.C. Lundberg.
Thank you very much, Joey.
We are set to begin the second half of this program at this time.
We're going to set up the weekend series against the Colorado Rockies for you
and kind of give you some sort of semblance on what to expect.
The series will begin to...
two night at 6.40 p.m. U.S. Kikuchi, hopefully can avoid that big inning that the Mariners have
been prone to, which Taiwan Walker gave up yesterday, and he will face Antonio Senzatella.
I sure hope I'm saying that right. Antonio Senzatella, he of the 245 ERA this season so far in two starts.
The Rockies as a team are eight and three coming into today, coming into Thursday, and they have the
highest average in the National League at 266.
So far, Daniel Murphy is hitting 303 for them.
Trevor's story is 275.
And Charlie Blackman has played 11 games for the Rockies.
All 11 games for the Rockies, as a matter of fact, and he's hitting a robust
378.
My goodness gracious.
Their pitching has also been pretty good.
Their team ERA, 303 on the season, which is fourth in the National League, and
very respectable. Kikichi does need to get it turned around. He's kind of been hit or missed this season.
And again, the big inning, it did the Mariners in on Thursday's game. Let's hope that, you know,
let's hope it doesn't come back to bite them again because it's been popping up a lot,
ladies and gentlemen. We're going to move on to Saturday's game. Pitching for the Rockies will be
Chi Chi-Chi Gonzalez, a 28-year-old right-hander.
Chichi Gonzalez. It makes me think of Chichi Rodriguez. I'm a big WKRP in Cincinnati fan,
or Chai Chai Roduigwees, as hapless sports reporter Les Nessman would say. He's got one start on the season.
It was, you know, three innings. I'm not going to judge a player based on just the one start.
Getting the start for the Mariners on Saturday, this would have been Kendall Graveman's turn in the rotation.
However, getting the start in his stead since he is on the injured list is Nick Margivichis,
who did come up through the Padres system as a starter,
and I believe this will be his first major league start.
Let me look that up real quick, ladies and gentlemen.
And of course I'm wrong.
He started 12 games for the Padres last season at age 23.
Oh, that's right.
I remember talking about him when the Mariners acquired him,
that he did better out of the bullpen later on in the season
after he was called backup.
But hey, you know, he's been okay this season
in the three games that he's pitched.
Only five innings.
You can't really judge a pitcher based on five innings of work.
Let's see how this goes.
Then on Sunday, Hermann Marquez will be pitching for the Rockies.
He's already got three starts under his belt, 19 innings pitched, and a 189 ERA.
So those three starts looks like have been pretty good.
And facing him, hopefully he can be top chef this time for an extended period of time.
It is just a Sheffield, who started out very, very well in his last outing.
And then wheels fell apart.
and the big inning happened.
And, you know, it's a familiar story with these Seattle Mariners.
They've got to keep it under control.
And the fact that the Rockies are hitting pretty well as a team
and have that 266 batting average,
which leads to the National League,
kind of worries me a little bit
that they could be one of those teams
who could score a couple of big innings against the Mariners.
Because, like I said, they are very prone to it.
Next, locked on Mariners, ladies and gentlemen,
we'll be coming at you on Monday.
when we will recap the weekend series against the Colorado Rockies.
And on that show, I will be joined by guest panelists, Stanley Roper,
the Energizer Bunny, and a Geiger counter.
That is one you will not want to miss.
That will be a delightful conversation.
I'm really looking forward to that.
So please remember to download, rate, and subscribe to this program,
so you never miss an episode.
