Starting point is 00:00:47 the link in the description of this episode. And with the calendar flipping to September, rosters have officially expanded around Major League Baseball and the mayors have made a handful of roster moves, including a very big one. We'll talk about that in a second. It's also
Starting point is 00:01:03 Mailbag Monday. We'll answer a couple of your questions as well. But that will have to wait because the Marrists have finally called up top catching prospect, Harry Ford, to the majors. They have also added infielder Leo Rivas and reliever Luke Jackson to the major league roster. And to make room for those guys, they have released Donnie Barrels and DFAed, Saurin Lowe. Harry, our number seven prospect in our latest re-rank.
Starting point is 00:01:33 And this year with Tacom, he did pretty much everything you could have hoped for a slash 283 408 460 that's a 125 wRC plus 19.2% k rates 16.2% walk rate 16 home runs 74 ribbies 7 stolen bases prove that he can stick behind the plate checked off pretty much every box hit for the power that you hoped to see from him in the PCL so yeah it was really just a matter of time we thought that this was actually going to happen a couple of months ago when Mitch Garver took that foul ball off the face neck in Minnesota. They had Harry there on the taxi squad, but he ended up not getting the call, reverted back to the rainiers and just continued to hit down there. Had a couple of, you know, weeks here and there where he cooled off a bit, but then he just kind of got right back to it. That's ultimately what you want to see. So again, he checked off every box. He answered pretty much every question that you had about him.
Starting point is 00:02:35 this year. Now, as a result, he's been rewarded with his first club to the major league level. And we were wondering if they were going to do this when roster is expanded. The answer is yes. But the question now is, how much will he play? Yeah, it's hard to say right now. I do think that Garber is the primary backup catcher still, especially if something unfortunate were to happen to Cal. But one easy thing we've talked about in terms of why Ford makes sense for this roster is when they have DHed Garber. They haven't taken them out late in games to use an advantageous pinch hitter like Rayleigh or Canzone against Sterite because Dan Wilson's terrified of losing his backup catcher in the sixth. And then if something happens to Cal, now it's an emergency thing.
Starting point is 00:03:31 Well, now you should be able to do that. You should be able to be more aggressive in removing Garver. Garber has no business getting, you know, any kind of leverage at bats against right-handed pitching. I mean, probably not any pitching, but especially not right-handed pitching. And now you can take him out and Rayleigh can DH and, you know, you have a backup catcher. So in that respect, that makes sense. In terms of how much he's going to play, I don't know. Cal can't play the last, what, 25 games left?
Starting point is 00:03:58 He can't play all of them. That's not going to happen. But, you know, he's also been catching the day game. after a night game a couple times recently in a row. So it's kind of one of those things. I don't know how much they're planning on using Cal. Is there a point where they clinch, you know, a playoff spot and Cal gets, you know, like three DH days in a row and then they Garver and Ford.
Starting point is 00:04:21 I mean, they might do that just in general because right now they aren't getting much from Cole Young. So they could have Polanco play some more second base, you know, for the time being. And then they could have Cal DH more. and then you can kind of give Harry Ford and Mitch Garber, you know, they could kind of split the job for a couple of days. But yeah, I'm not sure how much he's going to play. I don't know if he'll be in the lineup tonight.
Starting point is 00:04:45 So I think, you know, he can probably catch once a week. And then I think you probably try and get him a DH game or two down the stretch here. So maybe two starts a week, maybe three. And then just kind of that safety net. And, you know, it's going to be weird, but probably get some pinch running opportunities because he's a really good athlete he can run. So, yeah, it'll be interesting to see how they deploy him. Again, I think a lot of this is just like, hey, let's have the third catcher. I think this is something the Mariners want to do if they make it to the postseason.
Starting point is 00:05:20 They want to carry three catchers on that opening roster. And so having Ford come up and at least already had his first app bad and played in the big leagues and caught a couple of these guys before you. throw them on a playoff roster makes a lot of sense. So how much is he going to play? I don't know. My gut says two starts a week, maybe three at most. Kind of depends on when Cole Young starts to swing it. Young had a nice day yesterday, but it's his first good game in a while.
Starting point is 00:05:47 But you could make that work because Polo could just play some more second and for it can DH or Garber can D.H. And four can catch. And you can give Raleigh a real day off here and there. So my guess is he gets one or two starts to be on the dish. and then maybe one DH day a week. And I think that's kind of how they handle it. And then if we get late into September and,
Starting point is 00:06:06 you know, things are clinched and there's not a lot left to play for, then I can see him getting, you know, three, four starts in a row and Cal D-Hing for, you know, three days and then getting a full day off or something like that. So what should expectations be for Harry Ford? I think anything he gives you is a bonus. Yeah. I think he'll work counts. I think he'll still be able to draw some walks.
Starting point is 00:06:32 the strikeout rate will go up. I mean, it almost always does. So, yeah, I feel like he's going to be fine behind the dish. He might gun a couple of runners. He's got a really good arm and a quick release. I think he'll have some really impressive exaviloes at times. I think he'll draw walks at times. As for the overwhelming, how is he going to look?
Starting point is 00:07:00 I think he'll probably look like a 22-year-old. rookie who's getting his first taste of big league action. I think it's going to be a minute for him. And this is kind of a, you know, get your feet wet moment and all that. And, you know, hey, sometimes guys come up to the big leagues and they get challenged with fastballs and they do that for about a week and the guy crushes it. And then the league makes their adjustment. So you might actually get a week or two where Harry Ford is like really good.
Starting point is 00:07:27 And then the league makes their adjustment to him. Then he'll have to adjust. But he's a very patient hitter. sometimes overly patient. I don't think we'll see him expand the zone much. I think he'll be almost passive at the plate, but I don't mean that in a way that like Ben Williamson's passive at the plate and that he's just like swatting flies when he's up there.
Starting point is 00:07:49 Harry Ford will just take a lot of pitches. But when he does swing, there's power behind it. There's bat speed behind it. And there's Exavila's behind it where Ben Williamson and his first stint with the big leagues, it was just self-defense. at the plate. Harry's not self-defense, but he is a passive hitter in terms that he will take a lot of borderline pitches. Yeah. So I would say the only hope here is that the on-based skills and the understanding of the strike zone, the advanced understanding of the strike zone, that translates here.
Starting point is 00:08:22 And he's able to get on base. He's able to get some walks. He's able to help you in that way. And then, yeah, you know, again, he's incredibly strong. And he can destroy baseballs if he gets a hold of it. And so hopefully, you know, he can run into a couple here over the course of the month and help you out that way. Yeah. You know, Harry is, he's a good player, but he is still, you know, just what, 21, 22 years old? 22. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Getting his first taste of big league action. So, and he's a catcher. Those guys sometimes just take longer to develop at the plate too. I will say, though, the one nice thing is that one of the skills that tends to transfer over really well from the minors to the majors is strike zone knowledge. and, you know, the willingness to take walks, that typically translates very well. All right. We'll talk more about the Marra's roster moves in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Locked-on Marriss podcast is brought to you by Upside and Fandul.

So let's wrap up here on the Mariners roster moves today with the other moves that they made.
Starting point is 00:11:36 We pretty much just solely focused on Harry Ford there in the first segment. So let's talk about Leo Rivas and Luke Jackson. So Leo Rivas, let's start with him. We wanted him here. He's here now. So how does he help? I think, you know, the way he can help the most is that Cole Young has been bad for a couple of weeks now, even though he had a very nice game yesterday,
Starting point is 00:12:01 really needed it. And J.P. Crawford's also been bad, you know, for the last month or so. And ironically, he had a very nice game yesterday as well. So, you know, some pressure doesn't hurt. But you also kind of need to just raise the floor of this. And, you know, part of this is like, hey, JP's played every game for like the last two months.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Give them a day off. And you have Leo Rivas who can basically do everything J.P. can do at the plate. he's going to draw walks, he's going to get on base. He can steal some bases, which JP's not particularly good at. And honestly, he's probably a better defender than JP is right now. Anyways, so he'll probably get a few, you know, starts at shortstop. He'll probably get a few at second base, maybe even, you know, give Gino a day off and play some third base there. So yeah, he's just the true utility infielder.
Starting point is 00:12:50 I don't know how much he's going to play. I think he'd probably give him at least a start or two a week at one at shortstop, one at second, and base. I think that's reasonable. Maybe against a hard, a tough righty, you give, you throw him in there and give JP the day off, which seems backwards,
Starting point is 00:13:08 but, you know, it is what it is. Actually, trust JP Morgan's lefties right now than I do righties. So yeah, I think that there is a role here, but I think it's,
Starting point is 00:13:17 it's once or twice a week and then late game appearances. Hey, you know what, if you really need somebody to put the ball in play with a runner on third base and, and, you know, and one out, and it's a tie and run, you'd probably rather have Leo Rivas up there right now than like Cole Young. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:35 So that's a, that's a way you can get him dumb. So it's the switch hitter helps, like I said, and the defense is solid. So I think mostly late game stuff is where you'll see Rivas, but I think you can give them a starter to every week without really disrupting anything. Yeah. And then as expected, they added another reliever to the bullpen. it's Luke Jackson though we were talking about you know Michael Fulmer maybe you know one of those young younger dudes down in AA like Charlie Bionson or Tyler Cleveland or Michael Hobbs but it ends up being Luke Jackson who they brought in I don't know a couple weeks ago can't remember exactly when they brought him in
Starting point is 00:14:14 similar idea to Michael Fulmer though Jackson has spent time with the Rangers and the Tigers this year has not gone well for him he was really good in 2023 and 2022 though and so I you know the hope here for the meres perspective is that they can get him closer to that and not the guy that he's been for the last two years which has run eras of 509 and 454 respectively and been worth negative point four a four over that time you got any thoughts on Luke Jackson? Nope.
Starting point is 00:14:55 Just a guy. He's just a dude. He's Jackson Coar probably with worse stuff. You know, he's Taylor. He's just a dude. Watch, you know, I still link former factors in here at some point. Although he's very similar to Jackson that it's been a couple years since he's been super useful. The one thing that Jackson has done well this year.
Starting point is 00:15:16 And I mean, like the only thing gets a lot of ground balls. Yeah. It's just usually they're hit 95. miles an hour. So there's a lot of singles in there. So that's that's not great. But I still think Fulmer is ultimately the guy that they add. He's looked pretty good in Tacoma. And also the Mariners over the weekend, they signed Nick Anderson. Yeah. Former raised reliever. He got backer in here as well. So I think Fulmer and Anderson might replace Jackson or replace other people in this bullpen. So I think this is just we feel best about Jackson right now.
Starting point is 00:15:52 And maybe there's, I don't know, maybe for Fulmer, there's still a couple things they want to tweak or there's still something they're trying to figure out. Fulmer's pitched quite a bit since he's joined the Rainier's. And so I suspect that he'll be up at some point as well. And then, you know, for Anderson, like Fulmer, like Jackson, has been a couple years. But he just got here a few days ago. So they'll probably need to see him five or six times in Tacoma before they even consider him as well. So I guess Jackson was just kind of the closest guy. It's weird though because Jackson is only he's only thrown two in a third
Starting point is 00:16:26 since he's joining the mayor's organization. Yeah, Fulmer's thrown like, I think Fulmer's pitched in like five, five, six games already. So I don't know, this might, again, I think this might just be a very short term thing. I think Fulmer is ultimately the play here. Take a shot. Yeah, there's room for both of them if they really like something to Luke Jackson. So we'll see.
Starting point is 00:16:49 But yeah, I don't have much to say about this guy just yeah whatever uh quick correction on what i said earlier uh he didn't pitch in 2022 uh so 2023 and 2021 or his last two good years uh in 2021 he had a 198 era 366 5p with the braves and then with the giants in 2023 297 era with a 329 fip and 33 innings uh was uh running a an 11.6 1 case per 9 which uh second highest in his career All right. So Mailbag Monday kind of had to take a back seat today with the roster moves that the mayor has made. But we are going to carve out a little bit of time here towards the end of the show to answer a couple of your questions.
Starting point is 00:18:37 So let's get into him. Rayleigh fan wants to know, what does the future hold for Ryan Bliss? Is he the next Dillamore? Bliss's upside pretty much always has been like a utility guy. He needs to be able to play multiple spots. It doesn't have a great arm. So shortstop and third base are going to be a bit of a problem for him. but he can handle it.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Dylan Moore did not have a great arm either. So, well, he should be primarily a second baseman. Yeah, if he's going to make this team, like Cole Young's a second baseman, and, you know, that's probably going to be that way for the next half decade. So if Ryan wants to contribute to this team, he's going to have to play multiple positions. And I think it's a role that suits him pretty well. Again, he's got power, surprising pop for a size. We know that.
Starting point is 00:19:18 We know he can steal bases. We know he's a really good athlete. Pretty good defensive second baseman. Range won't be a problem. for him at shortstop or third, but the arm might be. So, you know, we'll see. I think, yeah, I think ultimately, though, he is in the mix to replace Dylan Moore next year. I don't think the Mariners will want to spend money on a utility guy next year.
Starting point is 00:19:41 So I think Bliss, I think Bliss and Ben Williamson probably compete for that. Reva's. Yeah, Revas, too. Where things might get interesting is if the Mariners, Tray J.P. Crawford this winter. We actually have a question about that. Oh, okay. So if that happens, then maybe Young is your shortstop to start the year next year. He'll have to get his arm back in shape. It's never been this bad. I don't know what's going on.
Starting point is 00:20:08 But maybe Young starts at shortstop next year. And then in that way, Bliss is competing with Rivas for the starting second base job next year. That might be a possibility as well. But yeah, ultimately, I think he's in the mix to be the demo replacement. And I think it's going to be, one of the bigger competitions in camp, quite frankly. So I think it's going to be him. It's probably going to be Revos. It's going to be Williamson. And then probably some kind of minor league free agent veteran coming in,
Starting point is 00:20:38 trying to take that job as well. So I think that's where he's ultimately going to fit. Could he fill that role? Yeah, he could. I think it's a role that suits him pretty well. All right. Michael wants to know, do you guys think JPs hold on the shortstop job is safe for 2026 or will Jerry
Starting point is 00:20:55 consider removing him this winter? I definitely think that you should entertain it, especially if they can take advantage of how limited the market is at short stop and second base and actually get something for him on top of getting the money off of the bucks. It's just what do you do from that point for it? How do you
Starting point is 00:21:11 build out the roster from that point for it? Does it actually make sense for you to do it? Yeah. So I think ultimately what's going to happen here if I had to bet on it today on September 1st. I think JP probably is the shortstop next year, at least to start the year.
Starting point is 00:21:31 Yeah. But I think they absolutely will consider it. And I think if they can get a deal that they like, they'll do it. Again, yes, there is limited shortstop options out there, but it does feel like Cole Young is a natural shortstop. And again, unless there's something permanently wrong with his arm, it hasn't been a problem in the past. There was no part of Cole Young's profile that suggested he didn't have the arm for shortstop.
Starting point is 00:21:56 And right now, it kind of looks like he barely has the arm for second base. And I'm not sure what that's about. But arm strength typically doesn't go away without something. I mean, he did have an elbow injury in spring. Sure. So we'll see if maybe there's some kind of cleanup that needs to happen there. But, yeah, like Cole Young can probably manage shortstop for a little while. And then you have second base options as well.
Starting point is 00:22:19 So, or heck, you know, Leo Rivas, again, like. If Revas is just going to hit 250, but he's going to walk 10, 12% of the time and play average defense at shortstop, it's basically J.P. Crawford. I mean, maybe even a little better. I mean, maybe what happens here is they try and keep Gino and Naylor. And just as a result of that, they kind of just have to sacrifice second base. And it's Ryan Bliss or it's Leo Rivas or whatever. And Cole Young at short. I think they should be willing to pull the trigger on JP if they get a deal they like. I don't think they're going to get a great deal. I think you're looking at more of a salary swap or pure salary relief. Either you're getting nothing interesting for him and you're kind of dumping the 11 million bucks or you're getting like a player who could help you somewhere else who's making 7,
Starting point is 00:23:12 8 million bucks and you're only saving 3 million bucks. So for example, like if you could trade JP Crawford for a like, solid seventh, eighth, any type of reliever who's making eight million bucks. You only save three, but you also get a bullpen arm that helps you out. Right. So like something like that maybe, but. So you're still reinvesting the money. Right.
Starting point is 00:23:33 It's just you're reallocating most of it to a different position of need. So I think they'll consider something like that. I think they'll consider my guess is they probably are hoping they can get something close to what they gave up for Jorge Polanco, kind of middle infielder. not great defenders, but pretty good offensive seasons, two of the last three years, blah, blah, blah, one year left at a reasonable price. So I think they'll probably try and spend that. And then with the depressed shortstop market, sure, they might get that.
Starting point is 00:24:00 But I do think they'll consider it. But all things I'm considering right now, if I had to bet money today, I would say that JP's most likely, the player most likely to be the starting shortstop for the Mariners on opening day of 2026. But we are not even close to being able to say that. with any kind of certainty. No, and hopefully we have a lot of baseball to be played beyond this month to focus on before we get to that. Yep.
Starting point is 00:24:27 All right. Last question of the day comes from Campbell. Best theory on why the 2025 Mariners are turning into T-Mobile Park merchants. Your guess is as good as mine. Because they're the Mariners. And when you think you've seen it all with this team and this organization, they find another way to surprise you and bring yet another thing that makes absolutely zero sense to the table. My best guess is that when they throw the noise meter up there, it's a code.
Starting point is 00:25:04 And like green is like breaking ball and red is like basketball. Right. Right. Right. I thought you were going to say it was like a winter soldier code. Kind of. I mean, a little bit. Yeah, you know, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:25:20 They just play subliminal messages that are hot dogs, you know, August 28th, blah, blah, whatever the secret code is. And they go from there. I don't, maybe they, maybe they told the Mariners, like, if you don't score X number of runs by the eighth inning, we don't do hot dogs from heaven. And like, that's, everybody wants to see that. So I don't have a good answer for you. The offense, it's like, it's understanding. that they would win more games at home than on the road. A lot of teams do that.
Starting point is 00:25:51 But for the offense to be better at home than it is on the road, I have no answers for you. They can hit at the most hitter suppressive ballpark in the entire sport. But anywhere else, they're like, I don't know what to do. What's more than likely, like seriously, what's more than likely the explanation of this? Cluster luck. But, yeah, it is weird.
Starting point is 00:26:17 and it is noticeable and it's really only been that way since the all-star break though or since the deadline i should say is for the last month or so uh and what's changing last month i don't know he got chino and nailer and nailers destroying the ball at team mobile park uh and gno you know i believe uh i think it was divish that posted the screenshot yesterday of um their WRC plus leaders on the road since the deadline and Naylor is running like a 20 WRC plus on the road. Yeah, it's weird. Before yesterday's game.
Starting point is 00:26:54 Which is the worst on the team. Yeah. Which is crazy. It's weird. But at Team Mobile Park, dude's a monster. Like a 160. We all thought he was joking when he said, yeah, it's super easy to take mobile park.
Starting point is 00:27:07 He might actually be serious. I mean, statistically. Statistically speaking, before he came here, that was a joke because he was like a 200 hitter with like a 220 on base but one thing to keep in mind is that like whenever we talk about players struggling team mobile park it's like yeah the park doesn't help but also before this year the mariner's pitching was really good too like that's also part of why people struggle at team mobile park um but uh yeah it's it's it defies logic uh which is very fitting for a seattle mariner's baseball team yeah yeah
Starting point is 00:27:44 Yeah, yesterday I tweeted in the long list of things that don't make sense about last year's team and this year's team. The post-deadline Mariners lineup being able to hit at Team Mobile Park and literally nowhere else has to be at the top. Gotta be up there. I don't get it. I'm not even going to pretend to try and understand it. I don't even have a theory. Yeah, no. All right, that's going to do it for our show.
