the Mariners are reportedly set to call up one of their top prospects, outfielder Lazaro Montas to the majors when rosters expand on Tuesday. Francis Romero had the news first, and now it's been corrected. by several members of the mayor's beat. Montes has obviously been a polarizing prospect with his elite power production, but is incredibly low end zone contact rate and high strikeout rate. But the mayors feel he is ready for his first taste of the majors.

Kobe, what I'm curious to hear from you is, what do you think this move signals for the mayors? That they've given up on 2026. I mean, there's really no logical reason to call up LAS, especially over a guy like Arroyo, unless this is all about trying to figure out, is this guy going to impact 2027 at all? Now, it's worth noting that both he and Arroyo have to be added to the 40 man anyways before, well, before the lockout, because otherwise they'd be Rule 5 eligible.

And I know they cancel the Rule 5 draft, whatever. They were going to get added this winter anyway, so there's no difference in adding them now. But yeah, I mean, like, I don't know how, according to the reports from Jude and Divish and Kramer, like, he's up to play. He's going to play regularly in this lineup, which I guess means Taylor Ward is basically done already, which is. Yeah, I figured later on in the show, we'll talk more about like who loses playing time. because of this, but yeah, it does potentially complicate things. Because at least like with the idea of calling up a royal, I think maybe even if you don't think that he can play second base,

that maybe he can stand there occasionally. Maybe he can play some first base and give Josh Naylor a bloke because he's been getting time there pre-game. With Laz, it's like he has to play in the outfield or DH. Right. So he's playing at the expense of Kanzown or Ward. but again, we'll get to that a little later. But yeah, I mean, Las has massive swing and miss problems.

It's not something that you can just, you know, ignore. It's not something that you can kind of work around. It's not one of those things where, well, you know, yeah, he does. But like, no, he has swing and miss problems and particularly in the zone. And we've talked about this a lot. but guys who have, you know, low end zone contact rates typically aren't that good. Now, there are always outliers, but Las Montes had a 71% in zone contact in AAA. The- You can call it 72. 72.7.

Okay, 72% like the lowest qualified hitter in baseball, in Major League Baseball, their end-zone contact rate, I think is 75%. 75, 76. And that's Nick Kurtz. So, you know, obviously Nick Kurtz is a very good major league hitter. But again, 72% in AAA almost certainly isn't going to translate to 72% in major league baseball. And even if it did, that's still 3% lower than the lowest qualified hitter. Now, I know Murakami has a similar end zone contact rate, but he missed some time.

So he's not quite qualified. but we're talking about a couple of. He is qualified. He is qualified now? Okay. Yeah, 71.5% for Maracami. Okay. So those two guys, similar whiff rates, but Maracami at the major league level, LAS at

AAA, that number is going to go up at the major league level. It just is. The stuff is significantly better. Pitchers have better stuff, better command, better control at the major league level. That number is going to go up. So can LAS or anybody survive, swinging and missing, at 31% or more of the pitches they see in the strike zone because so far the answer is no. And keep in mind, like, think about how bad Cal Raleigh's been this year.

Cal Raleigh still has about a 76, 77% in zone contact rate. Like, this is a really tough thing to work around. It's not impossible, but it's very difficult. And Las has only been in AAA for about a month now. He has gotten better in that regard to the end zone contact. So that's a good sign. But again, this is a guy who's 21 years old. He probably could benefit from staying down in AAA and just leveling out this improvement and making sure that it is solid.

Instead, the mayors are pushing him up in really an accelerated fashion. So are they trying to catch lightning in a bottle to try and salvage something from 2026? or is this just about seeing if he's ready for 2027, which, by the way, I don't like the idea of relying on Las or Arroyo in opening day, 2027, but that does be both. This is part of what it is. Do the answer be both?

I mean, things are true. Yeah, I guess it's, it's certainly possible. I look at Laz and like for him to succeed enough to make enough of an impact to both help. help the 2026 Mariners in any meaningful way, and also prove that he should be on the opening day roster in 2027,

I would say the odds of those things happening are extremely low because, again, LAS would have to be an outlier of outliers to be a successful major leaguer and swing and miss at as many pitches inside the strike zone as he does. And, you know, again, this is like a quarterback who's not accurate. You know, this isn't one of those things. It's like, well, yeah, he swings and misses a little bit, But no, no, no, no, no.

This is a NFL quarterback who's trying to survive on like a 45% completion percentage. Like that's just not going to work. It doesn't matter what else that person does well. They can't play if that's what they're going to do. It's like shooting free throws from, you know, at like 30%. Unless you're Shaq, who's the outlier of outliers. And maybe Laz is. He's certainly talented.

It's just limits the impact you're likely going to have. And so we'll see what happens with Las. I will say it's fun. It certainly is something fun to watch. and something exciting to see for the last month, and there might not be a lot of that left, as the Mariners are literally hanging on, you know,

to relevancy by their fingernails as they are five games back of the Astros, and they're only shot to make the playoffs being the division. But it's going to be fun. He plays the game extremely hard. He hustles 24-7 when he's on the field. Big energy guy, plays with a big smile all the time, loves the game,

based on what we watched this weekend, maybe just any kind of youngster who can come up and, like, provide some energy can help get the rest of the guys going because they look dead this weekend. And Las Montes is not a guy who's going to come up and fit into that culture of like, oh, you know, it's over. We're doomed. Blah, no, no, no.

Las plays extremely hard. He works extremely hard. And he plays baseball with a joy that is very similar to Julio Rodriguez. And so could that in and of itself help this team spark this clubhouse a little bit? Possibly. It is possible. But as for what to expect on the field, I have questions because, again, the profile is, would need to be outlier good for that to have a tangible impact in the lineup, which it sounds like he's going to be a part of on a regular basis. I don't know every single day, but sounds like a regular basis.

he'll be in that lineup. He's going to play. Yeah. I mean, if you are going to make a move like this, he does need to play. We'll see. I'm excited for Las because there are a lot of loud tools that he brings to the table here. So we're going to talk more about that and what the upside is of Lazaro Montas at the major league level in just a moment.

minors and 122 games between Arkansas and Tacoma slash 24. 47 365 556, that is a 137 WRC plus. This 38 home runs was second among all minor league hitters. And he was running a 30.7% K rate, but also counteracting that a bit with a 14.3% walk rate. Specifically in Tacoma, he is slash 267, 359, 564 with a 125WRC plus at 13 home runs. I mean, the guy was basically built in a lab to dominate the Pacific Coast League. His K rate only jumped by about 1% from AA to AAA.

So that was nice to see. And he continued to find other ways to get on base. It wasn't just the home run ball that was leading to the high OPS for LAS. So the upside here with LAS is obvious. and the shot that the Mariners are taking, to me is quite obvious. You're hoping that at the very least, especially if you're doing this to try

and bring specifically the 2026 Clubhouse a spark in this 2026 lineup, a spark. You're just hoping that he can hit a bunch of tanks before the league figures him out. Yeah, what are the Mariners hoping to get out of this? 25 games left. They're probably hoping to get six, seven, eight home runs until the league figures him out.

and again, a spark, certainly. Laz is a guy. He's worked very, very hard on his defense. So he's probably about as good as can zone out in right field, which is where I assume he'll play most of his games. He's got a very, very strong arm. So you might get a little something, something defensively out of him, but I wouldn't expect much.

But again, just something he's worked very, very hard on over the last two years, really. and has turned into a, this guy can only play first base to like, no, this guy's fine in a corner outfield spot. He'll be fine. You'll be fine. You'll survive.

I don't think he's plus or anything, but he's probably closer to average than he was even a year ago. So that is obviously a good sign. But yeah, you're hoping that he runs into a couple. And, and, you know, the hustle and the stuff shows up.

And he just kind of sparks the team a little bit. As for what's like the realistic ceiling. for him as his game sits right now. It's probably Luke Rayleigh, who the Mariners have missed since he's, you know, had the elbow issue and all that. It's just, we know Luke Rayleigh is more of a part-time player, probably ideally suited for a pure bench role, fourth outfielder type. And Laz can't do some of the things Rayleigh could fake, like play centerfield.

But, you know, I think that's probably the ceiling. The strikeouts are going to be high. He's going to be streaky, but he's going to run into a couple. you hope there's some guys on base when he does and he can completely flip the script that way, but he's always going to strike out. I don't think we're ever going to see a guy who doesn't strike out as part of his profile. And as is almost always the case, the Ks will go up at the major league level. The walks will go down. That is just the way it works. So can you survive, you know, if we want to be modest here, can you have a player who strikes out 34% of the time, 35% of the time, and walks 8% of the time, which is about, league average, you can if you hit enough home runs. Like the 65% of the time you don't strike out,

you have to do damage. You have to hit the ball hard and you have to get extra base hits. That's the only way it works. You can't, you know, slap a couple singles the other way, hit 250 with no on base skills and then strike out 35% of the time. That's just not a valuable player. So he has to hit tanks. And he's very good at that. It's just again, how does this skill set at 21 years old, we need to reiterate that. How does that, process look against major league pitching for the first time in his career. There's a high probability that Laz comes up and he stinks. Like he just does not look like he is a major league ready player because you know what?

Frankly, he's probably not. But the Mariners are desperate here. They're trying to get something going. And is there a possibility that Laz could come up, you know, hit five to 10 home runs in 25 games while the league kind of gets the book on him? and you kind of ride a hot streak and you try and get as much out of that as you can. Is there a possibility that that happens? Yeah, there is.

It's certainly within the realm of possibility. It's just much more likely that he's going to struggle and struggle hard. Because, again, I know it seems like we're probably picking on him, but the end zone contact stuff is very, very real. You have to hit strikes at the major league level or you're almost certainly going to fail. And Laz just doesn't. He doesn't. So it is what it is.

is and that's just going to be part of the profile for a while. And it's not that he can't get better at it. Again, he is 21 years old who's only played a AAA for a month. This is the player that he is now. Yeah. You can't. It doesn't mean that this is going to be the player that he is the entire, tired of his career,

but that's who he is right now. He can make significant strides next year. But right now, you need to be prepared to see a player who's going to get meatballs down the middle of the plate and swing through them 65% of the time. Like, that is, well, 35% of the time. Got my numbers mixed up there.

That is just who he is. And if he's anywhere close to a 70% in-zone contact at the major league level, he'll probably do enough to help. Do I like the chances that he will be at that level at the major league level? No, no, I don't. I don't think it's remotely feasible or likely, but it's not impossible. So we shall see how it goes for him. But again, great kid, hard worker, plays

the game extremely hard. Always hustles, always tries to take the extra base. And he can move a little bit for a guy who's 6-5-2-45. Especially on the bases. Yeah, he can move a little bit. Yeah, he's, it really is very Luke Rayleigh-esque, who's also a big guy who can run a little bit, has strikeout issues, but can hit some tanks. Like, it really isn't that dissimilar of a profile from Luke Rayleigh.

You just hope that at 21, he can eventually take that next step and graduate into the Kyle Schwarber type of batter that we all think he can ultimately be. Right. So, yeah, the hope long term with Lazz is that he's like some of these other guys that have performed in spite of their low in zone contact rates. The hope here is that he is the Mariners version of Munataka Murakami, at Kurtz, et cetera, right? Yep.

You know, the power is super starlum. It's just can he get to it enough where he? counteracts the red flags that come along with his game. There's a reason that he is by far the most polarizing prospect in the Marys Farm system. Probably one of the most polarizing prospects in all of baseball. Yeah. But if they do hit on Las, that is a potential like franchise changing level player that they would be

adding to their lineup long term. Yep. And the type of player they could never go. go out and afford in free agency. I should say that they will never go out and pay in free agency. They can afford them. Exactly. But they won't pay for them.

Exactly. Yeah, we'll see again. I don't have high hopes for Laz this year, but because he's 21 and because he's worked extremely hard and because we've already seen improvement in a lot of areas where there were major question marks in his game, I still think that I would still be, I mean, I know I'm like the low guy on Las,

but I still think he's going to have a nice, major league career. I just, I don't know how soon we're going to see that. And I don't know what the ceiling is because the floor is, is very, very low. It might take some time. But Laz also does kind of feel like the guy that might go on a hot stretch just right out of the gate. Yep. And then maybe there's a big dip after that. But he does feel like someone that could ambush the league for like a week or two to start a career. Sure. And that might be all it takes. Uh, so. So we'll see how it goes. I got to say I am absolutely shocked that he got to the big leagues before Arroyo.

Maybe Arroyo is following him on Tuesday, and they're making another move. But for now, we just know he's going to be at it on Tuesday once the roster is expand. So I would assume we'll see his major league debut at Finway Park. They can ask him to play the Green Monster. Are they going to ask him to play the pesky pole? That's kind of a weird ballpark to have a first-time outfielder go out there. But maybe he DHS for a couple days. don't know. But yeah, Tuesday sounds like

Las Day. And I would assume that he's probably, you know, getting ready to hop on a plane and head to Boston and he'll be with the team tomorrow and he'll be in the lineup on Tuesday. And I would assume that's the plan. And so Mariners fans should get their first look at him on Friday when the team comes back home. It should be fun. So coming up, let's talk about

I love to hear your thoughts down below you're watching on YouTube. So last month, this story is really cool. You know, signs as an international free agent back in January of 2022.

And now 90 years later, it's a big leader. Put in a lot of work, you know, as you mentioned. And that's a long climb. You know, you start out on the DSL, work your way. It's a complex league. then a high a double a and for las he's had a couple of hiccups over that time where like i mean he's never had a w rc plus below 100 at any level of the miners but he's had to definitely adjust to a couple levels of the miners when he's first gotten there and he has found a way to make

that adjustment and so like you said you know he's he's made many improvements over the course of his pro career, his very young pro career, not just in terms of what he's done at the plate, but also, again, like what he's been able to do on the field, on the basis, he's become a better overall baseball player over the course of his young pro career. It's been really fun to see. And he's earned this. He's earned this opportunity and we'll see if he can take it and run with it. Now the question is,

who's losing playing time to give him regular playing time, which is what's being reported. Lazz is getting called up to play. So is it Taylor Ward? Is it Dom Kand zone? I think the answer is pretty obvious. But what do you think?

Yeah, it's Brock Rodden. Las Montes, third baseman. Shortstop, Las Montes. That's right. I mean, to be fair, probably more likely to get to that ball today than J.P. and you guys know exactly what ball I'm talking about if you actually watch that entire game. If ever there was any doubt.

I don't want to talk about that serious. If ever there was any doubt that JP kind of can't come back next year, there's the play that sealed the deal. But anyways, yeah, it's Taylor Ward. I mean, like, why would you bench Canzon,

who is like a proven version of Las Montes for Las Montes who hasn't proven anything? You're not benching Randy. He's your best hitter. obviously you can't bench Julio because A, he's Julio and B. Laz can't play center field. So who else would it be for if not for Taylor Ward? You know, and again, it's not like Canzone's been working at first base or Las has been working at first base.

So it's not like you're going to sit Nailer who really looks like he at some point needed to be on the IL this year. And they just did not do it, whatever discussion for the off season. but yeah it's Taylor Ward which don't love that I actually think Ward has been swinging the bat better as of late the results aren't really there but he's been stinging the baseball when he has made contact and I still think there's some feeling out process about like hey is this guy a potential fit going forward or and I guess they probably decided no would be my guess they're benching him this quick it's worth noting that we got a bunch of questions on mailbag Monday which we'll be on Tuesday and then post game show on Wednesday and then Thursday we're doing a after school special type of episode with a very serious

what is the word of like vibe about sure sure unless the Mary's want to make another promotion I you know or like if they like sweep Boston then I mean we're probably back in at that point what LOL so anyways I mean it is the 2026

experience. They don't really do things. I think we're done with that. But anyways, yeah, we got a bunch of questions on Mailbag Monday about like, why don't they DFA Ward? Why don't they put Ward on waivers? They might have already put Ward on waivers. You don't have to announce who goes on waivers. And you can continue to play while you're on waivers. And it's just if somebody claims you, then they go to that team. If nobody claims you, then you just stay with the big league team. So for all we know he already has been put on waivers. I don't think the mayors would do that because, A, it's not like they don't have room for a good quality

fourth outfielder, you know, uh, or, you know, at least a decent bench bat against tough left-handed pitching, uh, which, you know, Lazz and, and Kanzone could use some help with. Again, can't zone can hit lefties, but it doesn't mean he has to face every single lefty. Same goes for last. So, uh, yeah, I think Ward is, is the odd man out. I think he'll go to a primary bench role. You might see, uh, you know, maybe Canzone gets a day off here and there against the top lefty. Maybe Randy actually gets a day off, God forbid.

He gets a day off and a day of rest going forward. So you can do that. Maybe, you know, there are some other options here. But Las is a right fielder. He's mostly played just right field too. He hasn't even played a ton of left field this year. I don't think he has. This might just be head cannon,

but I feel like most of his innings I've seen this year have been in right field. And, you know, we can talk about right field, right field, not a big difference. Well, yeah, he, uh, he hasn't played left field since the DSL in 2022. Yeah, so it's exclusively right field. Yeah. So I don't think they're going to ask him to play much left, if any, because that would just, why. You want this guy to be as comfortable as possible. So it's going to be right field.

It's not going to be at the expense of Canzone. Either he's DH and he's playing right field. So that really only leaves one guy. And it's, it's Taylor Ward and, uh, kind of unfortunate for Ward, because, He's a free agent after this year. He could really use a strong month of September to set himself up. It's been a very weird year for Ward where he's taking a ton of walks. And the on-base percentage has been pretty good, although it's certainly taken a hit in the month of August.

But there's no power. But the year before, he had 36 home run. So it's like, who's the real Taylor Ward? I don't know. Could have used this month of September to, like, reestablish some market value. Now it looks like he's probably going to get a pillow contract because he just got benched for Lizarro Montez. Could he come back to Seattle, like on a pillow deal? probably not the best place for it, but also who else is going to be that interested,

blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So long-term big picture. There's a lot of questions about Taylor Ward on Tuesday. Who's not going to be in the lineup that has been at the expense of Las Montes or for Las Montes? It's going to be Taylor Ward. There's really not much of a debate about it. All right.
