The first splash of deadline season has been made and it comes via your Seattle Mariner's.
Let's talk about it.

Ahoy, Sailors.
It is Thursday, July 24th, 2025.
This is Tadding Azores and Colby Batnode for an emergency episode.
Really nice to say that of the Lockdown Marries podcast.
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team.
every day. As always, if you want to hear from me and Colby even more and help support the show,
you can check out our Patreon. All you have to do to check that out, click the link in the description
of this episode. The Seattle Mariners have reportedly, and I mean, it's been confirmed by
pretty much everyone at this point, they have reportedly acquired First Baseman Josh Naler
from the Arizona Diamondbacks for pitching prospects, Brandon Garcia, and Ashton Izzy.
So we're going to talk about obviously just the deal in general. What this means is.
for guys like Luke Rayleigh and Dominic Canzon, what this maybe means for the rest of the deadline, especially like a Gino Svarez deal, all that good stuff.
But Colby, just first and foremost, first reaction, Josh Naylor, Seattle Mariner.
What do you think?
Pretty, pretty good.
You know, before we talk about the player, there are a couple things that we should mention here right off the top that may or may not indicate anything going forward.
But first and foremost, Nailer is a true rental.
You only get him for two months.
Jerry and Justin have really shied away from rentals who cost anything more than minor league filler.
You look at the two rentals they acquired last year in Turner and Garcia, both traded for minor league filler.
So they didn't give up any real assets to get those guys.
Naylor, they did.
Now, they're not elite assets, but they are.
sizable.
I'm not really not sure what the right term is for Garcia and Izzy,
but they're not R.J. Shrek, right?
Like, this is actually something substantial that they gave up.
So that's possibly a good sign going forward
and maybe even for future deals in the next week.
Also, it's worth noting.
As far as we know right now, we haven't gotten any official confirmation one way or another.
But as of right now, the Mariners are taking on all of Naylor's money.
that he was owed for the rest of this season.
Ownership has, well, the front office has said that ownership has told them they will spend money at the deadline this, this went or the summer to accommodate these deals.
It's not a lot of money, but two, three, four million bucks.
If Seattle's taking all that on, that's great.
And do more of that.
But so anyways, just right off the rip, they've acquired a rental for non-bargain basement price.
And they've spent a little bit of money.
So those could be signs of something going forward.
To get to Naylor specifically, it's a really good fit.
Josh Naylor is a guy that we've talked a lot about over the last month or so.
I've said he feels like a guy that Jerry will target this winter in free agency if he, in fact, has money to spend.
And now he's going to be a mariner for a couple months.
And so it all makes a lot of sense for me that Naylor is here.
You look at the profile.
Naylor's an interesting guy because he can, so far in his career, he can either be a high
average, high on base, hit a lot of extra base hits and hit 15 to 20 home run type of guy,
or he can sacrifice some average, sell out for power and hit 30 home runs like he did last
year. This year he's more of the former than the latter, but there is power here.
There's 30 home run power. He's literally done it. You don't have to project
that he's done it.
Unfortunately,
I saw that a little bit there in Arizona when the mayors were down there.
Yeah.
But this is also a legitimate, I would say a legitimate 60 great hit tool.
So if he wants 60 power, he kind of drops down to a 50 hit tool, but he can also be a 60 hit tool with 50 power.
It just kind of really seems to depend on what he decides he wants his, his day to be.
And he is having a great season.
so the Mariners have acquired somebody.
And by the way, real quick on that, just to be clear, like, he's still hitting for a lot of power this year.
He's still slugging 447.
It's just more doubles than home runs.
Right.
Right.
Arizona, bigger ballpark, more doubles to be had.
So in Seattle, he might need to hit for a few more homers to keep that slug up because we know Seattle is not a great doubles ballpark.
And Naylor is not a burner.
He's slow.
Which makes his 11 stolen bases this year hilarious, because he should.
shouldn't have 11 but he does so nailer's a guy who's hitting right now he's hitting well right now he's
a good fit in the ballpark uh he is a jerry depoto c tz type of hitter that we very about so
that we've talked about as a guy who fits the ballpark fits the whole you know know the strike zone
and and do damage and all that like everything we've talked about jerry wanting to target in a hitter
Josh Naylor has been that in his career, and he's that right now.
Fun little note on Naylor that I just find hilarious.
Like, this guy will walk.
He's always been willing to walk.
He has never struck out.
Like, it's never been a strikeout problem with him.
He doesn't swing and miss.
So you would just think he was a very, very patient hitter.
And he is, to some degree.
He will chase a lot.
Like he has always expanded the zone.
But his contact rates out of the zone are still.
significant and that's why the strikeouts are still down so this guy's bat to ball skills are
insane and again it comes with the power he murders fastballs um pretty good on the off speed stuff
uh and the breaking balls there's some swing and miss on the breaking balls like there's with
everybody this is a good hitter uh it is a good situation for him he's probably going to hit
somewhere between second and fifth would be my guess uh we'll see if they stack him and j p on the top
or if they still want Julio hitting second or what have you.
But it's a good, solid, probably number five type of hitter in a really good lineup.
And the Mariners got better today.
There's no doubt about this.
And, you know, you take the risk.
Maybe he's not very good for the next two months, but this is the shot you take.
Because if you add a guy who hits 290 with a 350 on base and, you know,
it's 30 home run power and hits a lot of doubles and is an upgrade defensively over Luke
Rayleigh, not that hard to do, understandably.
like you put him in the middle of your lineup,
you are better,
point blank,
period.
And so the acquisition of Nailer is,
is great.
There's really nothing to complain about here.
From cost to acquire,
from the player profile,
very little to complain about.
There are some things that it does to the roster that are interesting
that we'll talk about here in a minute.
But overall,
I can't imagine anybody being terribly upset by this acquisition.
It's a really good deal for,
and the mayor.
and the Mariners.
Yeah.
Look,
Brandon Garcia is my guy.
Obviously,
friend of the show,
wishing him nothing but the best
in the next chapter of his career
down in Arizona as well to Ash and Izzy.
But yeah,
when I saw this return.
Yeah.
Jerry has taken our guys,
two deadlines in a row.
Get out of here.
Brody Hopkins.
Now Brandon Garcia.
Yeah.
Dayton's sweet too.
But yeah,
I'll do respect to
Brandon Garcia and Ash and Izzy.
when I first saw this return, I went, oh, that's it?
Okay.
So, yeah, I think the Barroners did very well for themselves in this deal.
I should also mention that he's from my neck of the woods.
He's from about just 20 minutes down the road for me.
20 grade trade.
Salute.
But yeah, I mean, you and I literally just talked about this on our Patreon show,
not even a couple of hours ago.
That to me, there's like a very clear.
S tier of, you know, this trademark of the guys that we know for sure are going to get dealt.
You know, now you add in like a Stephen Kwan or a Jaron Duran that changes a little bit.
But like to me, it's, it's Gino and Naler.
And then like Willie Castro is below them.
And then there's a giant cliff.
And I felt like the Maris absolutely could not afford to miss out on one of those, at least those three guys that I just mentioned.
And so they just got one of them.
they still might try to get another one.
We'll talk about that a little later on.
But yeah, this was so crucial for them to get done.
And for them to jump the market, set the market.
Once again, this is something that they have done now multiple times.
It's huge.
So it is very reminiscent of the Randy trade.
It's very reminiscent of the Luis Castillo trade.
Just getting this thing done.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Kick this thing off, though.
kick this market off though and and it's very nice to see them not shy away from the high profile
rental that was my biggest concern going into this deadline was that they weren't going to do it because
that was the thing that we that was the one thing we had not seen them be willing to do and they actually
went out and did it the importance of making sure you weren't going to leave this market empty
handed and particularly offensively because now like look they still need
their base help, they still should be looking for another bat.
But now if they have Naylor and they can only add a part-time player, right, somebody who
compliments the roster and they go get like a big bullpen piece, then the deadline is still
pretty good.
Like it's not elite.
It's not great or anything like that, but it's pretty good, right?
It takes some of the pressure off to go find that other bat because the nailer goes and
Castro goes and all of a sudden it's Gino and a bunch of what's left and you're, you haven't
gotten anybody yet.
You know, the prices go up every day.
closer and closer.
So to just make sure you have something substantial, something impactful, done,
get that over with and now go out there and be aggressive and continue to add,
which it sounds like they still want to.
That is that just that piece of mind knowing that look, we got this in our back pocket
at a price that we're really happy with.
Now we can go out and we can go hunt and we can make this team as good as we possibly
can.
That piece of mind.
And just that, even from a negotiation standpoint with other teams,
to say, look, we got a guy.
Like, we don't need this guy.
That's all huge.
It all impacts everything.
So it's just a really good deal by Jerry and Justin,
whoever negotiated this one.
And it's a very nice return.
And I actually think Arizona did okay here for a first base only type of guy.
So we'll talk about that, I'm sure, here in a second.
But I just, I don't know, like nitpicking as part of the job.
And we'll nitpick this trade a little bit.
here in a second, but overall, I don't know how you can't be really excited about the deal that
Seattle just made.
All right.
So we're going to talk about now kind of the conundrum this causes on the roster and more in
just a moment.
But first, a reminder, this episode of the Locktime Marys podcast is brought to you by Game Day

and you're listening to the Lockdown Merritt podcast following the trade for Josh Naylor
and for instant reactions following every Mariner's game.
Be sure to tune into the Marriss Postcast with Anderson Hurst and Christopher Crawford
available on both the Lockdown Merritt's YouTube and podcast feeds.
Real quick, before we jump back into the breakdown of this trade,
I want to apologize quickly if you're watching on YouTube for the bad frame rate
and the lighting on my camera.
but here here's the alternative.
Let me show you guys this real quick.
Yeah, you don't want to see this.
So you're just going to have to deal with it.
Anyway, so Josh Naylor, while this is great, Colby,
does create a little bit of an issue on the roster.
He's another left-handed bat who crushes right-handed pitching,
but has really struggled against left-handed pitching.
Coming into today, he's an 82 WRC plus against lefties.
so now
that creates a little bit of a problem here
with
or a Polanco to a certain extent
but more specifically
Luke Rayley and Dom Kanzone
so we've talked about this
quite a bit on the podcast
so if you've been watching us
over the last couple weeks you're already familiar
with what we're about to talk about
but
to me now this feels like you might
need to trade Luke Rayley or
or Domkenz zone or Polanco.
Or Polanco.
Right. By the way, just real fast.
Obviously, by the time you guys are hearing this, you'll know this, but it's official.
The Marriers have announced it, so it's a done deal.
Hey.
So it's officially official.
Yeah, for contacts, an 82 WRC plus is Ben Williamson.
So against left-handed pitching, he's Ben Williamson.
And it's funny, you look at the slash line and it's pretty identical to Ben
Williamson, 258, 297, 358.
So again, it's, you can survive it.
You don't necessarily have to have a platoon partner with a guy like Nailer.
He's going to be in the lineup every day.
Yeah.
You kind of have to have one with Raley.
You don't have to have that with Nailer.
So while it is a problem or it is a, you know,
it could be an issue.
It's not one that's so bad that you have to go out and make another move to
accommodate this one, uh, on that front.
But in the terms of how.
having a bunch of lefties and only really three spots to play four guys,
which doesn't even count the D.H you need open for Cal Raleigh and anybody else who might need half a day off.
Yeah, it is interesting.
The kind of dynamic you have here, the problem I have is I don't foresee the Mariners trading three plus years of Luke Rayleigh,
who is an athletic player who right now is your backup center.
or fielder who can play all three outfield spots,
can stand at first base if you need them to,
uh,
who won't,
will only probably cost two,
three million bucks in his first arbitration season and who has
traditionally crushed at team mobile park.
Those are guys are hard to have come by.
Canzone's playing right.
Canzone's playing well right now. He's hitting a little better, uh,
than Rayleigh is right now. Rayleigh doesn't have any options left.
Canzone does. So you don't necessarily have to trade.
either of these guys, you can just send Canzone down to AAA and knowing that he'll probably
get called back up in a month when the rosters expand.
But, you know, there's a whole, do you want to take that bat out of your lineup right now?
I don't see how you don't, though, because either you're, you're benching Jorge Polanco,
who's the veteran who has, you know, 120 WRC plus himself.
He's been very good.
And he was obviously elite in March and April.
He was god awful.
May and into late June and he's been pretty good since then.
So he's been inconsistent, but right now he's hitting.
And that's the DH and Cal Raleigh.
And you can probably make it work where each guy plays three or four days a week,
but is that really helping anybody?
I don't know.
And that's not even counting the fact that neither of these guys can hit left-handed pitching.
So, yeah, it does create a little bit of a roster cluster problem.
them, let's call it, with all these left-handed bats who probably shouldn't either play anywhere
but first base, right field, or DH, who also struggle to hit left-handed pitching a little bit.
So it is a bit of a problem.
It's a unique problem.
And one that Jerry and Justin are going to have to solve.
Again, they do have an easy lever to pull.
Worst case, you send Domcan zone down to Tacoma.
And who knows, there's an injury or, you know, you get to September 1 and you call them back up
and you have a really good bench bat every night
in either Rayleigh or Canzone.
So it's not a disaster because
Canzone still has that option,
but it definitely muddies the waters
and how they're going to build out a lineup every night.
Yeah, so I'm curious if,
well, one, are there teams that are actually going to be willing
to buy in on what Dom Canzone has done
over the last month or so?
Yeah.
And if not, what can you actually get for Luke Rayleigh right now?
So those are kind of the things that are just,
going through my mind right now.
But yeah, like something has to give here.
I'm also curious, like, what's going to be the move tomorrow, I assume, when, when Naylor
gets added to the roster?
Like, what's the corresponding move there?
Is it Dillamore?
Is it Donovan Solano?
Yeah.
Canzone and Mastroboni both have an option left?
So you can't...
I just can't imagine that they're going to send Canzone down.
right i mean master bony's barely playing right now so that could just be a quick buy some time move
uh to make that happen um but again like you probably if a guy's not going to play that often and
either rayley or kanzone isn't going to play all that much uh as things stand right now you probably
prefer the versatility and the speed of somebody like master boney then one of those guys is your
pure bench option so um yeah it'll be interesting to see how they they handle that my guess is
They'll send down Master Boney would be my hunch.
But it could be Canzone.
In theory, they could send down an arm if they really want to.
They don't have to carry 13 pitchers they choose to.
But that's something that they've chosen every single time.
They've ever had an opportunity to do that.
We know the Mariners would prefer to carry nine guys in their bullpen if they could.
So, yeah, what they do in the short term, I don't know.
Long term, it's not bad to have options because maybe.
Maybe Luke Rayleigh does help you get a player that, you know, we aren't even thinking about right now because the team that would be trading that player still wants to maybe try and compete a little bit this year.
Or maybe they're trying to think about next year and they don't want the faraway prospect type of thing.
So again, they should be listening on Luke Rayleigh.
They should be engaging on those talks and also Canzone if anybody's willing to give them something.
but they don't necessarily have to trade either of them.
And, you know, Naylor is a free agent after this year.
There's no guarantee he's back.
In fact, I'd say it's unlikely, although I think Jerry would like to have him back.
It's just, is he going to have the money to be able to sign him?
But you're probably going to need, you know, after this season ends,
you're entering the offseason, presumably with Luke Grayley as your projected first baseman
and Dominic-Can zone as your projected right-fielder.
So, yeah, it's kind of a little.
gray area they have to navigate here for at least a little while,
but possibly as much as a month.
So we'll see.
I'm not really sure what they're going to do.
I see merits on all the sides here.
My gut says is that that Seattle will not want to move away from a productive major
leaguer with three years of club control who hits a T-Mobile park.
That is a rare thing for Seattle to have.
and so I don't think they're going to trade Luke Grayley
but I think they should be open to it
and they should be creative with that
and if the right deal falls into place
they shouldn't be afraid to pull the trigger on it
but I just think ultimately
Canzone is the one who loses playing time here
unfortunately because he's been really good
he's just he has the option left
and that's just the way it goes sometimes
we're going to talk more about what's next
for the merits as the deadline approaches here
in eight days and just a moment

And you're listening to the Locked-on Mariners podcast following the trade for Josh
Naler.
And if you're worried,
this means because the mayor has made a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks and didn't
get A. E. E. Oh,
Souras.
This means now that they're not going to get a.
Johanio Swares.
Pretty much every beat writer covering the Seattle Mariners has made sure to let you know
that that is not the case,
at least not yet.
Daniel Kramer has reported it.
Adam Jude has reported it.
Shannon Dreyer has reported it.
I'm sure a bunch of other people have reported it by now.
But the Mariners are still very, very interested in trading for AUNIOSA.
So, yeah, that's still very much on the table here.
So I guess, you know, when we're wondering what's next for the mayor is, I guess that's probably it, right?
Like that's their goal now is to Land Gino for Arizona and try to overcome these reported 11 other teams.
that are in on him.
That was the last thing that I saw
was that there was 12 teams in on him.
So there's one of them,
I would assume.
That number surely isn't inflated whatsoever by Arizona.
Because as we know,
everything that is reported this time of year
is 100% factual with no ulterior motive whatsoever.
So, yeah.
Anyways, yeah, it is good to see that Seattle is reportedly.
Still interested in Gino again,
ulterior motives.
Reportedly.
They work both ways.
But when you break it down here, it actually, you kind of look at what Seattle gave up and where their farm system still is and what they still need at the major league level.
There's really no reason to eliminate the Gino-Svarez discussion right now just because they acquired Nailer.
Really, the reason people would think it probably wouldn't happen is that, well, how often do, you know, two teams make two separate trades with one another at the same deadline?
And it's like, well, I mean, technically the Mariners did that with the Nationals in 2019.
But I get it.
And also there's this whole thing about like, well, they want pitching.
The mayors don't really have pitching.
They just traded some of the little pitching they did have to get Naylor.
So does that mean it's over?
Maybe.
But I don't know.
Just Arizona view Brandon Garcia as a starter because he was before this year.
And he had a pretty good year when he did it.
So yeah, you look at it and you say, look, doesn't make sense that the Mariners would be out on Gino just because they acquired nailer.
no absolutely not so when the report comes that he's still their main target and again this is
jude and and kramer and drayer and even bob nightingale like i'm sure there will be others too
as the mariner strand runners on second and third one out i'm sure there will be others too
that uh that will kind of it's good thing josh taylor's coming soon
it is it is because anaheim is is hell we can say that right um but anyways yeah that's a lot
anyways yeah so i i totally buy that gino is still a priority he's still a target i don't think
this trade in any way uh you know inhibits them from making that a reality the the
problems with the mariners acquiring gino are still the same as they were earlier today like
the roadblocks are still the same.
So it makes sense that they would be interested.
We've also heard we may have heard 11-12 teams,
but we've heard pretty consistently that Seattle and New York are the most aggressive on him.
And that's kind of the bidding war right now.
We'll see if anybody pops up late here.
But yeah, Gino, he's still an option.
And I would imagine that if Gino's still an option,
then so too is Willie Castro and maybe Luis Robert Jr.
I do wonder if maybe Seattle, if they don't get Gino, do they maybe pivot more towards
a strong controllable reliever, back in reliever now that they have acquired the big bat that they
need?
Maybe, but I still think Gino's, I mean, Gino's in play still.
The Mariners are still aggressive on him, according to everybody.
And there's still Willie Castro out there.
There's still work to be done.
But the fact that the Mariners were very quick, very quick to let people know.
No, no, no, no, no, we're not done. We're not done. Don't worry.
Like, we're not out on Gino just because we acquired Nailer.
They're learning.
They know they're fanbass.
About time. Maybe don't let you leak anything either.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah. But, yeah. So ultimately, do I think they're going to land Gino?
Probably not. I still think the problem with them not having the pitcher to offer, you know, Arizona is going.
to be the determining factor here.
But so far,
New York hasn't budged on that front so far as we know.
And we'll see.
I mean,
sometimes you can sit here and say,
well,
maybe they'll calm down now that they've got nailer in their back pocket.
Or maybe or the next couple days,
they'll ramp it up because they're like,
awesome.
The reaction here is good.
Look at our lineup with this.
Let's go get this done.
And remember,
every day you wait,
get closer to the deadline,
the price is going to go up.
So getting it done ASAP is still valuable to them.
So I think the Gino thing is,
still a very strong possibility.
At the end of the day,
I don't know if they have the right prospects to make that deal happen,
but they certainly have good enough prospects to make a deal like that happen.
And they certainly have the desire to go get a player like that still.
And those are both good things.
Yeah.
And I think what this really comes down to is just Nailor's market developed more than Gino's has.
And Gino is obviously going to go for a much more significant return than Nader.
Or at least so I think so.
So, yeah, that a first base only, a little bit of a platoon issue.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So it's just as simple as the Diamondbacks were just ready to pull the trigger on a, on a nailer deal.
They aren't yet on on a Swares deal.
And that's it.
Simple is that.
So we'll see how long it takes for them to, you know, sift through all the offers that they get on, on Gino and how long they want to drag this thing out.
But that also works both ways, right?
Like you said, you know, the price goes up, but also time starts to run out for the
Diamondbacks to capitalize on Suarez as a trade value.
Right.
I mean, again, teams find solutions elsewhere.
Like, they don't want to wait around.
And, oh, we waited until the last chair and the music stopped and the chair got pulled out from under us and we ended up with nothing.
Like, that's the danger here.
So teams are going to want an answer from Arizona pretty quick.
But, yeah, I mean, the good news is that Seattle very clearly open for business, willing to make trades, willing to get things done.
So is Arizona.
And obviously you've had a lot of discussions over the last probably week or so.
And it led to Naylor getting done.
You're very familiar with what the asking price on Gino is.
You're very familiar with who they like in your system, who they don't.
So this could come together quickly.
Again, I wouldn't say it's likely.
I would say I give it like a 35, 40% chance that they land Gino, which is pretty good,
considering that, you know, 11 teams are after them apparently.
So I still think the Yankees are the favorite here,
but I would not rule out the Mariners whatsoever.
It's just a matter of can the Mariners kind of overpay, quote, unquote,
and talent to make up for the fact that they don't have the young pitching
that the Yankees have to offer Arizona.
And we'll see.
We don't know.
So that is going to do it for us.
