Starting point is 00:00:00 Thanks to Brian Wu. The Mariners have won their first series against the Orioles since 2022. Let's talk about it. You are Locked-on Mariners, your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked-on Podcast Network, your team every day. Ahoy, Sailors, it is Thursday, June 18th, 2026. My name is Tad and Gazzalas. Colby was at the game today, so I'm on a solo mission, and thankfully I get to talk about a win with y'all.
Starting point is 00:00:31 The Marys are the first team to shout out the Orioles this season, defeating Baltimore 3-0 this afternoon to secure a huge series of victory, despite the Marin is missing basically half their usual lineup. Brian Wu, of course, the big story in this one. We'll talk about his big day on the bump as well as the adventurous innings. Edward Bizarro and Andres Munoz both had a little later on. But to kick things off, we're going to get the offense out of the way because, well, there isn't much to talk about on that front, really, after the first inning.
Starting point is 00:01:00 Shane Bos, the Orioles starter, was able to retire J.P. Crawford and Cal Raleigh, the first two Marin's hitters that he saw with relative ease. But as the Mariners broadcast pointed out, Bosz's fastball Velo to start this game was considerably lower than his season average. Typically, he is 96 to 97 on that pitch. To start this game, he was more 93 to 94. And eventually he kind of got away from the four seamer as the first inning went along. long and the mirrors were able to take advantage of that with two outs. Josh Naylor in his first game back after missing the last couple doubles into the right center field gap.
Starting point is 00:01:40 Leodi Tavaris tries to bear hand that ball for some reason. I think if he just scoops that ball up with his glove, he might have had a chance to hold Naylor to a single. But instead he whiffs on that ball and it makes its way to the warning track. And Naylor is able to waltz into second. A couple hitters later, Cole Young with a real nice piece of hitting, and gets a fastball just outside the top part of the strike zone, is able to drive that ball down the left field line,
Starting point is 00:02:05 drive in the mare's first run of the game. And then the next hitter, Colt Emerson, as well with another nice piece of hitting, kind of recognizing in that moment that Boz had gotten away from his four-seamer, probably wasn't going to get a four-seamer there early on in that at a bat. And sure enough, Boz throws a knuckle curve on the first pitch, misses at the bottom of the strike zone for ball, throws another knuckle curve at the bottom of the zone, catches far too much plate,
Starting point is 00:02:34 and Emerson is able to make him pay for it, ripping that ball through the hole at 106.4 miles per hour off of the bat to drive in the Mare's second and third runs of the game. Emerson able to add a walk to his day as well a little later on, and this one on a pitch that wasn't even close to the strike zone. He had to challenge it. It was ruled strike three, but it was very clearly ball four home plate umpire tyler jones had himself uh a rough one behind the plate
Starting point is 00:03:05 to say the least today we had five successful abs challenges and the first inning and a half yeah it was uh not a good day at the office for tyler jones and that walk for membersin was maybe the best thing the mayor's offense did from the third inning onward it was a very afternoon after the first couple of innings from the Mariners' offense. Miles Masterbony and Victor Rubble has led off the second inning with back-to-back singles, but the top of the
Starting point is 00:03:37 lineup wasn't able to drive them in. And that was it for the Mariners' offense. I don't think they had another hit from that point forward. They only had four hard hit balls from that point forward. Now, of course, Baz was able to find his velo there in that second
Starting point is 00:03:53 inning, especially against Cal when he struck out Cal. That was one of four strikeouts against Cal Raleigh in this game, by the way. Rough day of the office for Cal Raleigh. But yeah, Boz was able to get back to that 96, 97, and he was able to dot up the corners with it as well with some consistency. So Bos was pretty tough for the rest of the day. But yeah, just an ugly one from the Mariners offense from that second inning onward.
Starting point is 00:04:22 And obviously, you know, have to mention they are without Luke Raleigh, who apparently his back thing that he was dealing with at the start of the series, that has healed up, but now he's been hit with the flu because, of course, when it rains, it pours with Mariners in terms of ailments as of late. But he is expected back in the lineup tomorrow, though I'm not really sure if that's actually going to work
Starting point is 00:04:46 because the Red Sox are scheduled to roll out three lefties. So I don't think we're actually going to see Luke Rayleigh in the lineup, maybe at all against the Red Sox. this weekend. But I guess the expectation is that he'll be available off of the bench later on in those games at the very least. We'll see about Julio as well. But yeah, obviously this team is also missing Julio,
Starting point is 00:05:07 missing Julio Rosarena, they're missing Brennan Donovan. And this lineup certainly looked like it from the second inning onward today. So again, not a lot to talk about on the offensive side of things for the Mariners, but a lot to talk about on the pitching side of things. We're going to talk some Brian Wu. We're going to talk some Edward Bizarro. We're going to talk some Andreas Munoz and just a moment, but first a reminder, this episode of the Locktime Marys podcast is brought to you by Kalshi,
Starting point is 00:05:32 Odu, and Proton. Baseball season is here, and now you can trade every game on Kalshi. Running a business shouldn't feel like you're trying to connect a bunch of systems
Starting point is 00:06:28 that were never designed to work together. One app for accounting, another for inventory, another for sales, and somehow none of them talk to each other. That's where Odu comes in. Odo is an all-in-one business management software that brings every part of your business together in one powerful platform. From sales and accounting to inventory and marketing, everything works in one place, helping your team move faster, stay organized, and focus on growing the business instead of managing
Starting point is 00:06:53 software. The best organizations know that success isn't just about talent. It's about having everyone working towards the same goal. And that's true in sports just like it is in business. You know, when we're talking about the Mariners, we talk about how they have the same philosophy at the majors as they do all the way down at the lower levels of the miners. Even with all these different factions, the organization itself is one.
Starting point is 00:07:14 They have a vision, they stick to it, and last season showed us what's possible when everyone is working from the same playbook. Great organizations win because operations matter. And that's why you should get Odu. Try for free today at Odu.com, Locked-on. That's O-D-O-O-O-O-com slash L-C-K-E-D-O-N. Starting point is 00:09:26 Link in the description of this episode. So, of course, Brian Wu, coming out of a very rough road trip for him, which included this same Orioles lineup, just absolutely teeing off on him exactly a week ago at Camden Yards. But he was awesome today.
Starting point is 00:09:43 He returned serve and then some just absolutely smoked this Orioles lineup. Seven innings of scoreless ball for Wu. Just three hits allowed. Nine strikeouts, one walk, just seven hard hit balls on 89 pitches for Wu. Getting into the pitch breakdown here, for Wu.
Starting point is 00:10:02 29% whiff rate on the four seamer, 35% called strike plus whiff rate on the four seamer for Wu. 30% whiff rate on the slider, 29% whiff rate on the sweeper. Sinker took a little bit of a backseat in this one, just 10 sinkers thrown by Wu. It was primarily four seam slider sweeper
Starting point is 00:10:21 from Wu in this one. And a healthy dose of sliders and sweepers to specifically the top of the Orioles lineup. And I thought Wu's sequencing, against the top of the Orioles lineup in this one was fantastic. The bat that really stands out to me against those big Orioles hitters was the second to the last step bat of the game for Pete Alonzo where Wu strikes them out on three pitches,
Starting point is 00:10:48 throws a couple of jabs with the four seamer, gets him to swing through the second one, and that sets up Alonzo for the right hook. You know, the slider down and away, gets them to chase after it, strike three night night have a seat that was awesome from brian woo and really just not many danger areas in this game for woo of course with only three hits allowed and and uh no or just one walk and that walk didn't come until the very end of his start a little bit of a shaky fifth inning for
Starting point is 00:11:21 woo got into a three two count against samuel besiio but was able to get him out and then a couple hard hit balls from Laotie Tavares and Colton Couser, the Couser one nearly took Wu's head off. Thankfully he was able to duck out of the way of that. Tavaris drove a ball at 101 miles per hour, I think, into the left center field
Starting point is 00:11:40 gap, but Miles Mastroboni getting on his horse a little bit, making a nice sliding catch there to potentially rob Tavares of extra bases. We also hung a sweeper at the knees to Blaze Alexander there at the end.
Starting point is 00:11:56 of that fifth inning, but Alexander missed it, got underneath it, and Master Bunny was able to make the relatively easy catch out there. And then the eighth inning, things kind of got out of hand for Will. Give us up a leadoff single on the first pitch to Laoti Tiberis, and then the next pitch goes to the backstop. That allows Taviris to go to second. I mean, he was already stealing, so he had that bag.
Starting point is 00:12:21 But then Wu throws three straight balls, including that one, to Kouser. That winds up being a nine pitch at bat and ends with Kouser walking. And unfortunately, that ends Wu's day and forces Dan Wilson to go to Edward Bizarro. But thankfully, Bizarro was really good in this one. Another really nice outing for Bizarro in this series as he protects Wu's stat line in this one. though it was as I said at the start of the show adventurous
Starting point is 00:12:55 so he gets a grounder to Colt Emerson and Emerson going towards third base decides to get the force out over at third instead of trying to turn and make a double play happen and obviously if Emerson
Starting point is 00:13:10 throws that ball into the outfield that's huge huge trouble for the mayor so I like that decision for Emerson to go to third but then where things got really dicey Bizarro gets Jackson Holiday to pop up to center field and immediately Victor Robles is signaling that he can't see it he's just waving his arms in the air going I can't see it I can't see it
Starting point is 00:13:37 Miles Masturbone recognizes that he gets on his horse again sprints over there collides his glove with Robleses and yet somehow after all of that, Robles is the one who makes the catch for out number two. That could have been terrible for the mayors. We could have been having a very different discussion on this show had Robles not made that catch
Starting point is 00:14:05 or if Massimony had not made that catch or if God forbid those two, you know, ran into one another. And honestly, given the way things have been with Mariners on the injury front, I'm kind of surprised that they did not. knock each other out in that moment. Thankfully they didn't. But yeah, that was a really scary situation.
Starting point is 00:14:24 But Bizarro after that faces Taylor Ward and freezes him with 97 on the outside corner for strike three. Just absolute paint from Edward Bizarro to end that threat. And again, keep Wu's stat line for steam. After that, though, Andres Munoz skimbing into the game in the ninth inning because Once again, the mayor's offense couldn't do anything in the bottom half of the eighth. And Munoz, as we've seen far too many times this season, just could not throw strikes. And I was feeling pretty nervous because I was like, yeah, cool, you know, solo show, get to talk about a win, you know, I'm getting ready to talk about a win, all that.
Starting point is 00:15:10 You know, I had my notes ready. And then I'm like, uh-oh, am I going to completely have to change my whole plan for the show that I'm about to do. Thankfully, it all worked out in the end, but yeah, Munoz just could not locate the slider, could not locate the fastball, even though he was feeling good with the fastball. The Velo was up there.
Starting point is 00:15:32 He hit 101 a couple of times. He hit 100 a couple of times. He was feeling good in that regard, but yeah, he could not locate whatsoever. But it was able to induce a couple of weak roundouts, a Colt Emerson with a chance at a double play was able to tag Gunner Henderson out while charging end on that ball
Starting point is 00:15:54 throws over the first after double clutching and unfortunately hits Adley Rutchman in the side of the helmet and I think Ratchman was going to be pinch run for anyway but he had to leave this game after getting plunked in the helmet
Starting point is 00:16:11 and you obviously don't want to see that so hopefully Adley Ruchman is doing okay I haven't been able to check on an update for that just yet. And then Munoz found himself in a little bit more trouble. Got Pete Alonzo to ground out. It's J.P. Crawford. Mariners third baseman, J.P. Crawford, with a couple of more nice plays in this one.
Starting point is 00:16:34 He's looked good over there so far in these three games over at third base. Makes a nice play. Charging in on that ball makes a nice throw over to first to get Alonzo. And then later on with Munoz facing Lioti to very, Tavares after throwing just one slider for a strike against the first four batters he had faced. Munoz throws back to backsliders to Tavares. Sneaks one in there for a strike looking for strike two. And then throws it again.
Starting point is 00:17:03 Strike three back foot slider gets Tavaris to chase after it for strike three to end the ball game. And thankfully avoid disaster because we have seen far too many times this year. outings that have looked like that from Munoz go completely sideways and end and heartbreak for the Mers. Fortunately, we were able to dodge that bullet. And Munoz able to get the save in this one. And the Mery is able to get a huge series win despite all the injuries,
Starting point is 00:17:38 the musical chairs that they played and their lineup over these three games. And despite some of the shaky pitching there from And, Maris Munoz. Now the Red Sox are coming to town this weekend. And obviously, you know, the Red Sox are one of the worst teams in baseball record-wise. However, they are bringing maybe the Mariners greatest kryptonite this season to town with them.
Starting point is 00:18:03 They're going to be rolling out three consecutive left-handed starters over the course of this weekend. Good left-handed starters as well. Rangers Suarez tomorrow, Connolly early on Saturday. and Peyton Toley, who has been fantastic this season on Sunday. So again, not sure if we're going to see Luke Rayleigh much over the course of this weekend, even if he is available now. And I'm not really sure who else we're going to see in this lineup or who we're not going to see in this lineup. So that will be fascinating, but that is a bridge that we will cross when we get to it.
Starting point is 00:18:40 For now, really good series win for the Mariners, really good win for them today. Big day for Burr. Brian Wu. That was awesome to see. And hopefully he can build on that momentum going into his next start in Pittsburgh against the pirates, I believe on Wednesday. That start is going to be. All right.
