Locked On Mariners - Daily Podcast On the Seattle Mariners - Bryan Woo Fails to Execute Questionable Gameplan, Victor Robles Gets Reckless in Mariners' Loss

Episode Date: September 18, 2024

It was a night full of bad baseball for the Mariners on Tuesday. Bryan Woo got shelled, Victor Robles got hurt and committed what we call in the business a "big oopsy," and the offense failed to put r...uns on the board despite creating plenty of traffic on the bases. Ty and Colby react to it all. Ask us questions!Follow the show on Twitter: @LO_Mariners | @TyDaneGonzalez | @CPat11For your next listen, check out the Locked On MLB podcast. Starting point is 00:00:00 Well, the Mariners lost last night and everyone they're chasing one. So that's great. We'll get into the worst bits of last night's game and more coming up here on the Lockdown Marreras podcast. Colby, hit it. You are Locked on Mariners. Your daily Seattle Mariners podcast. Part of the Locked on podcast network. Your team every day.
Starting point is 00:00:27 Ahoy, sailors. It is Wednesday, September 18, 2024. This is tiny Gis Ellis and Colby Patnaud for the Lockdowne Marriss podcast. part of the Locked-on podcast network, your team every day. On today's show, we'll be diving into the ugliness. That was last night's 11 to 2 loss to the Yankees.
Starting point is 00:00:46 We also will talk a little bit about tonight's game. But before we do that, shout out to our title sponsor today. Game time. Download the GameTime app, create an account, and use the promo code Locked-on MLB, that's L-O-C-K-E-O-N-M-L-B
Starting point is 00:01:00 for $20 off your first purchase. And if you want to hear from me, Colby even more and help support the show. Check out our Patreon. The link is in the description and you can sign up for a free seven day trial. So this one was ugly from the get go folks.
Starting point is 00:01:17 Glabert Torres gets on base on a ball that Josh Rojas tried to will foul. I wasn't able to do that. Then Soto doubles makes it second and third. Nobody out. And then Aaron Judge comes up and does what of course Aaron Judge does. And that
Starting point is 00:01:33 just kind of set the tone for how this game was going to go for Brian Wu. Really weird approach for Wu. Colby, you and I talked about this right before we hopped on here. Wu, it was still a fastball heavy approach, but it was just a four seam fastball heavy approach from Wu. 48 four seamers. The next highest used pitch for him was the slider with 14.
Starting point is 00:02:02 Two seamer tied that with 14 as well. but we didn't see that two seamer a lot, which was pretty surprising. We also saw 11 change-up seven sweepers. So this was fairly close to what we saw a couple starts ago against Oakland, four-seem usage far higher than it was in Oakland. But beyond the four-seamer,
Starting point is 00:02:28 a bit more of a mix of pitches from Wu that we haven't really typically seen. Just a really weird game plan against this lineup. And when we just saw Wu have a ton of success against another really good lineup and the Padres taking a perfect game into six and a third deep, using that four seam, using that two seam almost exclusively for him to do this
Starting point is 00:03:00 against the Yankees, I don't know, it was just weird. Every team is different, obviously, and every game plan is different, but I don't know. It was just a weird approach. And he didn't execute. He didn't execute it whatsoever. He caught a lot of plate consistently throughout the course of this game.
Starting point is 00:03:17 Now, you know, with most major league hitters, there's the off chance if you make a mistake in the middle of the plate. They might miss it, right? They might foul it off. But when it comes to the Juan Sotoes of the world and the Aaron judges of the world, there's a hundred percent chance, 110 percent chance, a thousand percent. chance that you are going to get punished for it. And that's exactly what happened last night. Like you just can't hang a slider in the middle of the plate to Aaron Judge, which is what happened in that first step bat when Judge made it too nothing.
Starting point is 00:03:47 So yeah, just a rough night overall for Wu that put this game well out of reach for the mirrors. Do you have any thoughts on his night? Yeah, it was just weird. Mostly due to the lack of the two seamer or the sinker. whatever you want to call it, because that is his best pitch. It is the pitch with, you know, it is the pitch that is the least likely to do damage, that they're least likely to do damage against.
Starting point is 00:04:15 It's got a lower exit be low than the four seamer. It has, you know, similar put-away. It has the lowest slug of any of the pitches he throws. Like the two-seamer is the pitch, and it's the pitch that he is, it's probably better than his four-seamer. At least it's right there. And Wu, we know, we've talked about this. Wu has two elite pitches.
Starting point is 00:04:36 It is the four seamer and the sinker. Those are two really good pitches. He's got some of the best fastballs in the game. And last night, he just kind of ditched one for reasons I can't quite understand. Now, the four seamer did get whiffs. He was able to generate a fair amount of whiffs last night, but who cares if you make the guy whiff twice? And then he land a four seamer right in the middle of the plate and he hits it for a double. The whiffs don't mean anything, do they?
Starting point is 00:04:59 And so he just overused the four seamer. He underused the sinker. It was just kind of this weird, like almost going halfway. Like the Yankees crush fastballs. Like that's their thing. It is they are the second best team in baseball against all fastballs, but in particular four seamers, they absolutely crush it.
Starting point is 00:05:16 So why go four seam heavy instead of sinker heavy? Like why not go more of a balance with the fastballs? And then the change up, which was pretty good again last night, he threw some good ones in there. You know, the change up kind of starting two of them. merge as like a legitimate third pitch here.
Starting point is 00:05:35 But your season's on the line, right? You're going up against the New York Yankees. You're at home. You have to do what you do best. You have to do what got you into this position. And for Wu, it's the four seamer and the two seamer, kind of going back and forth playing together in concert. So last night, I just kind of felt like he ditched the sinker.
Starting point is 00:05:55 He didn't have confidence in it, whatever the thing is. And he just went really four seam heavy, which, I mean, you can get away with against some teams, but the Yankees demolish fastballs. And like you said, when you're talking about Juan Soto and you're talking about Aaron Judge, you can have a great basketball. But if it's in the middle of the plate, it doesn't matter. Those guys are going to make you pay. And Wu last night, to go along with the weird game plan, very mediocre command of his pitches.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Everything kind of just seemed to leak out over the middle of the plate, except for the sinker. The sinker was kind of the one pitch that didn't really get torched yesterday. and he just didn't use it. I don't know if that's a game plan. I don't know if that's a feel thing. But whatever it is, Brian Wu kind of, you know, ran away from himself,
Starting point is 00:06:40 what has made him super successful over these last, you know, what, 12, 15 starts, whatever it's been. He kind of just moved away from that. And he shelved his best pitch for a night against the best lineup in baseball, like the number one offense in baseball
Starting point is 00:06:55 is the New York Yankees. So just a really weird game plan, you know, and even worse. worse execution. So he got he got jumped for lack of a better term and it started before the game. Whatever that game plan was, he didn't execute it or the game plan was dumb, in which case, you know, Cal Raleigh deserved some blame here. And so does Woodworth and that coaching staff. It was a bad game plan. And it was, it's a bad game plan. And then it was poorly executed.
Starting point is 00:07:26 Like, yeah, you're lucky you only got 10 dropped or 11 dropped on. So, yeah, just a bad night for Wu. And, you know, it's really his only blowup start of the year. He's been spectacular pretty much every day in the mound. He's been, when he's been healthy, he's been great. So just really bad timing. Like, it's not uncommon. We know pitchers have starts like this, even really good ones.
Starting point is 00:07:47 Logan Gilbert, George Kirby. Heck, Garrett Cole has starts like this every once in a while. But just really bad timing. And it's just a little bit more of a downer because, A, obviously, like I said, the timing. But B, just, didn't look like Brian Wu. It looked like Brian Wu was like, yeah, I know this worked against everybody else, but
Starting point is 00:08:06 it's not going to work against the Yankees, so I have to change everything. And it's like, no, no, no, you be who you are. and you work with what you have your best pitch. If you're going to go down and if you're going to give up home runs to Soto and you're going to give up home runs to judge, like, all right, cool, I'm going to do it with my two seamer.
Starting point is 00:08:22 I'm going to do it. I'm going to do it being the guy I am going to be. And if it's not good enough, then whatever. But last night I just felt like Wu tried to do something different. for reasons I don't quite understand. And it's just not the time for it. Yeah. So Woo's Night, seven strikeouts, one walk, seven earn runs on nine hits,
Starting point is 00:08:41 94 pitches for him in this one, over four and two-thirds innings pitch. At the very least, they didn't burn the bullpen. We saw awesome vote. We saw Jonathan Diaz for two and a third. We saw Leo Rivas pitch on this one, and that's the story. But at the very least, the bullpen in good shape for the next two games. despite the rough outing for Wu.
Starting point is 00:09:02 All right. So let's get into this offense. They only scored two runs. They had a lot of hard hit balls. Julio had a really good game. Victor Robles, however, did not. He had himself a big whoopsie in this one. And also got hurt to add insult to injury or injury to insult.
Starting point is 00:09:23 However you want to look at it. We'll talk about that in just a moment. But first, a reminder, this episode of the last. Starting point is 00:11:33 and you're listening to the locked on merrars podcast you can catch all the action between the mergers and the yankees tonight on the merrish home town broadcast with serious xm via the sxm app all you have to do to find that is search the word mariners so colby i know you've
Starting point is 00:11:52 been to talk about this what happened with victor rubless in the bottom of the first so again they were down in a two o hole they load the bases with one out luke raley has an awful at bat that brings up Justin Turner with two outs and Turner works a 3-0 count against Luis Heel and it seems like they have them on the ropes and the broadcast cuts to a replay of the last pitch and once it cuts back from the replay Victor Robles is sadly walking to the dugout
Starting point is 00:12:23 and the Yankees are walking to their respective dugout and I didn't have the volume on at the time I was listening to music so I had no clue what was going on. and yeah, they showed the replay and Victor Robles tried to steal home as Heel was messing around with the Rosenbag. Robles was trying to catch him at a time where he thought he was distracted, but Heel made, you know, the ideal throw there in that situation got Robles and that ended the inning. So look, Victor Robles has been a lot of fun this year because partly because of his aggressiveness. on the base pass. He has been really good at picking his spots,
Starting point is 00:13:07 which makes this moment all the more baffling. But there is aggressiveness and recklessness, which you and I have talked about quite a bit on this show and on our Patreon show. And you have to recognize the game state, right? It's a three-o count. You're down to nothing. And you have a professional hitter in Justin Turner,
Starting point is 00:13:33 who I think, the odds of him working a walk in that situation fairly high compared to other hitters in this lineup it's just a sheer lack of awareness of what the situation is in that moment call what it is it's either it's incredibly stupid or it's incredibly selfish it's one of those two now i don't think victor robes is a selfish player but i didn't think he'd be stupid enough to try that and he was and he was out and you he wasn't even close to any of the three pitches he threw to turner he's at 25 pitches in the inning. He's been struggling with his command and control that entire inning. And you have them on the ropes and it's two nothing. And if you can get one of these back,
Starting point is 00:14:12 if you can get two of these back or whatever, you can get to that Yankees bullpen early, you have a shot to win this game. And you have to win this game because you can look at the out of town scoreboard and say, oh, look, everybody won. And now it's just up to the Padres to beat the Astros. Like, you have to have awareness of the situation, not just in game, but just overall. Like this is a huge game. This is a huge series. And this is not the time to take that shot. Honestly, there is no time to try and steal home plate.
Starting point is 00:14:39 And if you do it and you're successful at it, great. You got lucky. There's just no upside to this. Like what's going to happen? You steal that run. Let's say you steal a run, right? And you say, okay, well, now it's 30. Turner walks.
Starting point is 00:14:52 Bases are reloaded. But now you need another hit. And now he'll get to reset. Like the end result, even if you're safe, is probably the result you were going to get if you just let Turner. take his at bat and just let it flow regularly. So I think, you know, the convenient thing is, oh, well, you know, hand injury, whatever,
Starting point is 00:15:11 we had to get him out of there. And if Dan wants to, you know, if the Mariners want that to be the official reason they took him out, fine, whatever. They don't want to throw him under the bus. Fine. But I really hope that Dan Wilson sat him down and said, you're done.
Starting point is 00:15:25 Like, I can't put you back out there. We're not going to throw you under the bus here. But no. that is incredibly selfish. You should have sent him home. He shouldn't even been in the clubhouse watching the rest of that game. Sent him home. That is the worst mistake I have ever seen the Mariners make in this type of situation.
Starting point is 00:15:43 Not because it's a physical error, not because he overthrew the cutoff man. No, it's just reckless, stupid, selfish baseball. You have to play clean baseball, particularly when you're down to nothing and you have the opposing pitcher on. You have him like on the edge. right you can push him over the edge you can get back into this game you can flip the script of this entire game by just standing there and letting the app play out and instead you decide that you're going to make this decision you're going to be the star you're going to steal a run because this guy has his back turn to you or whatever and oops sorry made a mistake you can't have that that is selfish
Starting point is 00:16:24 reckless baseball and so i hope i hope that dan wilson told robles you're done Like you're not going back out there tonight. We cannot have that. That is unacceptable because you have to set a tone. And we talked about this a lot of Scott's service. Scott would refuse to bench guys for their stupid play. Refuse. And hey, guess what there were murmurs of at the end of Scott tenure or Scott's tenure?
Starting point is 00:16:49 Yeah, you know, players didn't really respect them. They kind of knew they could walk all over. And Dan has to set a tone for where you're at. And in that situation, in that moment, that is as bad as it gets. that is the dumbest thing you could possibly do in that situation. So if they want to, if Dan,
Starting point is 00:17:05 you know, did the Mariners say, hey, you know what? Yeah, he also hand thing, it was swelling up on them. Let's get him out of there,
Starting point is 00:17:11 blah, blah, blah. And then after the game, be like, yeah, it was a little too reckless. Like, protect him publicly,
Starting point is 00:17:16 fine, all you want. But I really hope that the message was very clear from Dan Wilson or whoever in that clubhouse that like, hey man, no, like that is unacceptable from you.
Starting point is 00:17:27 It is unacceptable from anybody in this clubhouse. And you're going to sit. you're not going back out there. I will not reward that level of stupidity by just pretending like it didn't happen. You're going to sit down. So I don't, we will probably never know if it was a disciplinary thing
Starting point is 00:17:42 or if it was actually just because of the hand issue. I really hope it was disciplinary though because you have to set a tone. That is unacceptable. It is, it is just, it is the most selfish thing I've ever seen on the baseball field.
Starting point is 00:17:54 And even if it didn't come out of a place of selfishness, that's how it reads to me. I'm going to be the star. I'm going to be the center of attention. I'm going to steal home, even though the best shot for me to, to help my team is to plant my butt right here on third base and wait for heel to throw this ball. Because he's probably going to throw a ball. He wasn't even close in the first three pitches.
Starting point is 00:18:15 So call it whatever you want, selfish or stupid. It's unacceptable either way. I think, yeah, no, I think it was stupid. I think it was dumb, but I don't think it was selfish. I don't think it came from a place of selfishness. I don't think Robles is like, I'm going to play hero ball right now. and I'm going to be the star or whatever you're you're alluding to. I don't agree with that at all.
Starting point is 00:18:34 Because that's not at all what Victor Robles has displayed over the three months that he's been in Seattle. I think it was just a dumb moment. I think it was a I think it was a moment in which just call it what it is, not you and me. We're calling it what it is. It's not aggressive. Right. It's not a risk. It's stupid.
Starting point is 00:18:52 Right. But his aggressiveness, sometimes that's going to come back to bite him. Now, this is like beyond aggressiveness. This is beyond. This is just reckless. right because it's just a complete unawareness of what the situation at hand is right yep right it's a complete disregard for who's at the plate what the count is how many outs there are what the the just the overall state of the game right yep robless uh though the reason that he was on base to begin
Starting point is 00:19:20 with he gets hit in the hand uh by a 91 mile per hour fastball from louis eel this is the six time in the last nine games uh that robles has been hit by a pitch And it got him square on the knuckles. Yeah. So X-rays came back negative. We'll see if he's able to get back into the lineup here in the next day or two. But that would be obviously a huge blow. Now, it doesn't really matter considering what the situation is on the standings right now.
Starting point is 00:19:45 Probably not. But still with the outside shot of potentially making a run out of the playoffs, you know, you would prefer to have Victor Robles in the lineup rather than not. I think just in general you would because he's a fun player who's aside from the 15 seconds of stupidity last night has been, you know, one of the best reasons to watch Mariners baseball for the last two months. One of the only reasons. So obviously I wanted to be healthy, but also long term, this is why if you're like, if
Starting point is 00:20:10 you're penciling in Robles to be like the everyday guy next year in right field or whatever, it's like, maybe take a beat here because dude gets hit a lot. He's dealing with hip flexor. He's got some knee issues. It's like, dude's banged up right now. Like he's battling through a lot of stuff. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:29 maybe take a chill pill on him expecting him to play 160 games next year yeah and by the way again like this this goes back to why I don't think this came from a place of selfishness like the guy's playing through a leg injury he's been playing through a lot like dude is a dog right like and he has consistently posted in spite of quite a few injuries that he's been dealing with like he's dealt with a hip he's dealt with a knee he's dealt a bunch of stuff that we just talked about Um, so, you know, I have to give a lot of props to Victor Robles for, for playing through all the stuff that he's going through. And if he tries to play through another injury, like, that's incredibly admirable. Uh, all right.
Starting point is 00:21:10 So let's talk about these, this offense, uh, last night. Uh, this was another example of the Mariners offense, creating a ton of traffic, uh, but just not being able to get guys across the plate. They had just three fewer hits than the Yankees. They scored nine fewer runs than the Yankees, though. and that's obviously the huge difference here. But they had quite a few hard hit balls. I mean, Julio was awesome last night. Four for five for Julio, three hard hit balls.
Starting point is 00:21:36 Josh Rojas had three hard hit balls last night. JP with a couple of hard hit balls, Jorge Polanco, a couple of hard hit balls, including the home run. But yeah, they just couldn't get the big hit. Now, again, it didn't really matter because their pitching staff put them at such a deficit. Brian Wu put them at such a deficit in this one. but yeah this was a frustrating night for the offense because you had everything except for runs going for you yeah base runners everywhere not a big hit to be found uh you know you get your two runs on solo home runs
Starting point is 00:22:13 uh but yeah you had nine hits you had uh what was it um four walks you had was it two hit by pitches or one either way you had plenty of free base runners right you had plenty of hits you only struck out nine times that's a good number for seattle um so you put the ball in play enough you had enough base runners you just couldn't find the hits and you know just one of those things of if raley's big home run comes with a couple guys on base in that you know second inning or whatever everything changes and uh same with polanco if he gets up there and there's two got couple guys on and he hits that home run everything changes. But when they had opportunities,
Starting point is 00:22:56 which is pretty much every inning, I can't think of a clean one, two, three inning that the Yankees had in this game. Maybe they had one. But when you get those opportunities, particularly against the Yankees, a team that can hit and is going to score runs, you have to take advantage.
Starting point is 00:23:13 When the bases are loaded with one out, you have to find a way to score at least one. You probably need to score two or three in that situation. But you have to find a way to score at least one. When you get a runner on second, with nobody out. You have to get that guy in. You have to find a way to put these runs up. And the Mariners had plenty of traffic last night. They hit the ball hard plenty of times. They didn't strike out an egregious amount for them. They drew walks. They had a couple homers.
Starting point is 00:23:40 So like all the things that have been happening lately that have allowed the Mariners put up five, six runs with consistency. It all happened last night. It just it wasn't bunched together. It wasn't, you know, it wasn't the timing was was bad. for those big hits. And so some really bad at bats with guys on base, huge spots where the game was still in reach. It's 4-0-0-0. Game still in reach. Not high odds, but the game still in reach.
Starting point is 00:24:04 And heel wasn't anywhere close to as good as he was in New York. Like you had opportunities against him. You had opportunities against Stroman. And he just couldn't really figure it out. So, you know, kind of a weird night. And obviously, you know, once this game gets to 7 to 1 or whatever, it's like, okay. Like, that's, it's over.
Starting point is 00:24:23 at that point. But, you know, you had guys give you good at bats. Justin Turner had a good night at the plate. You know, Julio like we talked about, had a great night at the plate. He continues to just be, you know, one of the best players in baseball this month. It's great to see. And that's obviously a huge bonus. You know, and it's as we looked for things that are valuable heading into next year, Julio finishing on a strong note would be great. And right now he is. And, you know, His OPS is up to 715. His WRC plus is up to 110. He's slashing 28, 32323.
Starting point is 00:24:56 3992. So the slugging's still not there. Right. I think the county numbers are about where you wanted them to be at the All-Star break. But the ratio numbers are aside from slugging. They're within range, right? So obviously, Julio, you know, he's kind of the guy.
Starting point is 00:25:14 He had four hits last night. So kind of off the hook with all this. But still, It's a bummer because, again, they had nine hits. They had four walks. They had two home runs. And they just couldn't find the combination of things to put up, you know, crooked numbers on the scoreboard.
Starting point is 00:25:30 And they had a lot of opportunity. So it just makes for a very frustrating night. And, you know, this thing's, it probably doesn't feel all that much different because they would still lose. But if they put up five or six last night, we're probably seeing her being like, okay, well, at least the offense is still rolling. And, you know, we saw some good things. And they had every opportunity to put up five or six runs last night with ease.
Starting point is 00:25:49 They just couldn't quite get the hit at the right time. And that's a bummer. And it makes for a really annoying baseball. Yeah, 100%. All right. So game two tonight got Nestor Cortez against Bryce Miller. Get into that one here in just a moment. But first, a reminder of this episode of the Lockdown Marys podcast is brought to you by Arena Club.

Starting point is 00:27:23 That's ArenaClub.com slash locked on MLB promo code LOCKD ONMLB for 10% off your purchase. And you're listening to the Lockdown Mariners podcast. Once again, you can catch all the action between the Mariners and the Yankees tonight on the Mariner's hometown broadcast with Sirius XM via the SXM app. All you have to do to find that is search the word Mariners. Bryce Miller going in that one for the M. Nestor Cortez.
Starting point is 00:27:50 Mariner's legend going for the Yankees and this one. Thoughts, if any, on this, Colby? Score runs. It'll be interesting to see what Miller does because we talked about the Yankees being like the second best fastball hitting team in baseball. Obviously, that's Miller's bread and butter. The splitter is going to be a very important pitch
Starting point is 00:28:16 with Soto and Rizzo and the other lefties for Dugo that are going to be thrown out there as well. So, you know, it's a tough matchup for Miller. We know he's going to throw strikes. Like, we feel really confident that that's going to happen, but they have to be quality strikes. And, you know, he's got to find a way to get value out of that four seamer. You can't not throw it just because the Yankees are really good at hitting that pitch.
Starting point is 00:28:41 But you also can't live and die by that pitch. You have to find a way to get value out of the, out of your split and out of your sweeper. You know, Miller's been slowly getting more and more out of those. pitches here recently. So hopefully that trend continues. You do need to get some innings out of him, not because the bullpen is shot from last night, but just because, you know, if Miller only goes four innings tonight, then the bullpen's going to have to cover five, and then there's still a game tomorrow, and then there's a game on Friday. Like, it starts to snowball on you a little bit. So it'd be nice if Miller could go six. And then, you know, against Cortez,
Starting point is 00:29:19 you know, he's literally the kitchen sink guy. He'll throw everything he's at you. And he'll be in the middle of the plate at times. And when he is, you have to take advantage. You have to hit the ball hard. So this is probably your best shot to score runs of this entire series. The offense has been going pretty good recently. Obviously, you know, last night mixed bag for the offense.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Overall, not good enough, clearly. But, yeah, Cortez is a guy. You can score runs off of. I'm sure the Mariners. I'm sure Garber will be catching. I'm sure, you know, Hanager will probably be in there, even though Hanager against the lefty. we saw what the lineup
Starting point is 00:29:54 looked like against Andrew Heaney and how effective that was. I imagine their role with basically the same lineup. We'll see if Robles is available today or not. But yeah, they're going to stack a bunch of Rides in there. And when Cortez, you know, leaves the change up in the middle of the plate, you have to do damage on it
Starting point is 00:30:11 because he's going to get some calls off the corner. He's going to live out there as much as he can. But at some point, you're going to get ahead too-oh and he's going to have to pipe something. When he does, you have to take advantage of it. And if you don't, you're going to lose this game and your season will essentially end as if, you know, it's really hasn't already.
Starting point is 00:30:28 But, you know, we'll see. And, you know, if you can do all that and you can win tonight, maybe just maybe, you know, Cleveland gets a dub and maybe San Diego gets a dove and you're back to where you were yesterday, albeit with two fewer opportunities to make up ground. So, yeah. Again, as long as you can get yourself into striking distance of Houston before that series and look you're running out of time on that but it's still possible to get within striking distance of them before that series it's all you can really hope for and ask for so it's still possible not likely but still possible uh we'll see how tonight goes it's going to be framber valdez against still and cease so it's good matchup yeah it's going to be a lot of fun last night's padra's astros game was unhinged just absolutely off the rails uh the tigers school against alex alec marsh Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:23 Anybody else kind of rooting for the tigers to sneak their way into the playoffs? Like, I know it'd be at the expense of the Mariners, but like, I mean, all right. If the Mariners are not going to make it. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:34 Then yes. Like twins versus tigers, aren't you rooting for the tigers if the Mariners aren't going to sneak in there? Tigers are a more fun team than the twins. They got scuba from Seattle. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:44 It's plus they're like the least like threatening playoff team ever. But like they're going to win a series against, they're going to win a series against. Houston like obviously so and then Cleveland Minnesota is between a couple guys that are you know just a couple solid mid-rotation starters Bailey over against Tanner Bibi so we'll see how that goes that's just kind of a coin flip there they played some close games recently so yeah so you know I'm not really concerned about the wild card I still think that it's the the least likely path to to getting into the postseason it's really just Houston for me like if again if you can get
Starting point is 00:32:18 within striking distance of Houston before that series next week then maybe. Got to be within four for that series to mean anything. And if you're within three or four, then you have to sweep for that series to mean anything. If you're within two, then winning that series might be enough. Now, can you pick up three games and what,
Starting point is 00:32:41 five days? Probably not. But, you know, we'll see what happens. But yeah, I think, you know, I think we're just kind of running out the string here,
Starting point is 00:32:50 11 games to go still technically in the playoff race. Just kind of, you know, hoping Julio continues to hit, hoping Rayleigh continues to hit a little bit. And just hoping some of these guys, you know, finish on a high note. And we can start to dream about an offense that finished the year as one of the best in baseball over the last month. And in a pitching staff that's got all this talented young arms and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, just something to build on as we had into the winter. And, you know, at the end of the day, there's only 11 Mariners games left,
Starting point is 00:33:19 assuming they don't make the playoffs. then you have to wait seven months before we see real Mariners baseball again. So for no other reason than just that. Maybe you might want to check out these last few games. Yeah. So we'll see how it goes. You know, I'm just going along for the ride.
Starting point is 00:33:36 Like I said yesterday. And something cool happens. Great. And if it doesn't, well, that's an ending that I think I've already, you know, come to terms with.
Starting point is 00:33:45 And I think a lot of people have already come to terms with. So again, nothing to lose at this point. See what happens.
